Christian Cowan Gets The Last Laugh At NYFW
Out walked model Duckie Thot in a pinstriped suit that signaled a strong collection was about to unfold. But come time for her second turn on the runway, she'd be sporting something very different: a gigantic beach hat, chopped into a top and skirt, and nothing else. The audience erupted in laughter because, one could assume, they knew exactly what was going on. For spring 2018, French designer Jacquemus took over Instagram with an ubiquitous accessory called La Bomba; it went down in history as one of the biggest — and most dramatic — hats ever made. After being called out by Diet Prada to have claimed that Bella Hadid's version was made by himself, though it was made by someone else (Olmos & Flores), the hat took on new form. Was this a display of Cowan's cheeky, British humor? Without question. But it was also a creative way to get buzz going and remind the fashion crowd that things don't always have to be so serious.

Maddie Ziegler and Stevie Wonder's Son Kailand Morris Are Reportedly Dating
Maddie Ziegler is reportedly dating someone new: legendary musician Stevie Wonder's son Kailand Morris, People reported on Oct. 30.
The alleged new couple was confirmed by an anonymous source to People and The Blast, so take that with a grain of salt. But 16 year-old Maddie and 17-year-old Kailand are at least friends — she previously posted on Instagram a photo of them together with friends at Disneyland, in which his arm is around her waist. The caption reads, "Love these people too much!!"
Kailand also popped up on Maddie's Instagram around the time of her 16th birthday, when he posed with the former Dance Moms star in front of the car she was given as a gift from Sia.
The son of singer Stevie Wonder and his second wife, Kai Miller Morris, Kailand has recently seemed to focus on his career as a model, walking runways at Milan Fashion Week with Dolce & Gabbana and at New York Fashion Week with Pyer Moss. In June, he walked in a Comme des Garçons show.
Maddie and Kailand also have something else in common besides being famous people in Hollywood: Both have siblings who are competing on the current season of Dancing With the Stars: Juniors — Mandla Morris and Mackenzie Ziegler. Mandla actually recently posted photos of himself with Maddie and Kailand as part of a session with photographer Tyler Shields. In one photo from the session, posted by Tyler, Kailand is holding hands with Maddie, tethering her to the ground as she floats in the air.
The two friends have yet to confirm a relationship status, however, so be wary of too much speculation.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wore Suffragette White to Be Sworn Into Congress
In a historic moment in United States history, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) became the youngest woman ever sworn into Congress on January 3, 2019. For the ceremony, she wore a bright white suit, a color that was a symbol of the women's suffrage movement and has been used countless times in recent years to mark significant moments for women in politics.
In 2016, Hilary Clinton famously wore a white pantsuit to accept her nomination for the Democratic party in the presidential race. As the first woman in her position, many suggested it was a nod to another glass ceiling being broken for women. Later, in 2017, during President Trump's first congressional address, all female Democrats in Congress wore white as a way to highlight their opposition to any policies negatively impacting women's rights.
Now with 2019 only a few days in, the white pantsuit has returned for another new era for women in Congress. In the months since her election, Ocasio-Cortez has recognized the significance of fashion in the political realm. Not only are her shoes on display in a museum, she has spoken out about the misogyny at play when people critique her attire. It comes as no surprise that she would potentially mark another historical moment for women with her outfit.

Mediterranean Souvenirs at Tory Burch
NEW YORK, United States —  Every summer, Tory Burch’s parents Reva and Buddy Robinson would leave their kids at home while they sailed around the Mediterranean for six weeks. Tory and her brothers didn’t miss them. Their grandmother was with them on the family farm, and there was plenty to keep them busy, including the 35 German shepherds that lived in the barn. “My parents’ philosophy was that children should be seen and not heard,” Burch said after her spring show on Friday morning. Those were different times. But she has only the fondest memories of those summers, especially the bit when Reva and Buddy returned home laden with the souvenirs of their travels.
Her parents’ style — sophisticated, patrician — has long been a pillar of Burch’s design aesthetic. Sure enough, her new collection featured tailored safari jackets, wrap dresses and trim little knit polos. They're her bread and butter. But this designer also has a real knack for adding an allusive, dreamy undercurrent to her all-Americana, and here she drew inspiration from Reva and Buddy's souvenirs of the people and places they encountered. There was Tangier in the free-flowing caftans, Sicily in the severity of a buttoned-up, lace-trimmed black cotton shirt dress, the Levant in the gold coin embellishment, and small villages all over the Med in the floorsweeping volumes of poplin peasant skirts. There was an airy prettiness here that defied anyone inclined to a search for serious substance in the Burch oeuvre. But Tory might have been hedging her bets when she gave a subliminal nod to the village priest with her long, black tank dress over a white shirt. The model dangled prayer beads. So did Burch, in a rare acknowledgement of stress.
She remembers her mother as an adventuress. Michel Gaubert added a sly little fillip to the soundtrack with Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs Robinson." Maybe not quite the adventure Tory had in mind.

Efjord Retreat Cabin
Placed in an abandoned quarry neighboring Brecon Beacons National Park, the House for a Photographer is inspired by the dweller's craft. The long, rectangular form resembles the darkened box of a camera obscura. Its concrete and red oxidized steel shell sits lightly on the site, elevated on a foundation of stilts to not disrupt the natural landscape. A steel bridge leads to an interior that features four bedrooms, a dark room, and library, while a concealed door opens to a hidden outdoor cigar room. A combination of natural light and minimalist design throughout shape an ideal space for creating and displaying art. On the end of the structure, a wall of glazing acts as a lens capturing views of the surrounding nature.

Jordyn Woods Spoke Out for the First Time Since the Tristan-Khloé Scandal
The Khloé Kardashian–Jordyn Woods–Tristan Thompson cheating drama has dominated pop culture this entire week. Khloé broke her silence on the incident Wednesday, February 20, posting a series of cryptic quotes about betrayal and trust to Instagram Stories. And now Jordyn is speaking out about what happened—well, tangentially, at least.
The model and influencer made her first public appearance since the scandal Thursday night (February 21) at an event launching her false eyelashes line with Eylure. At one point during the evening, she took a microphone and seemed to address the Tristan-Khloé situation. "Thank you guys for coming out and supporting me through everything that’s going on," she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. "It’s been real, and Eylure has been super real with a project I’ve been working on for over nine months right now.”
Beauty and lifestyle influencer Jade Simone captured Jordyn Woods' short speech on social media. Check it out for yourself, below:
If you're unfamiliar about what happened this week, here's a quick recap: On Tuesday (February 19), news broke that Khloé and Tristan were breaking up amid rumors he cheated on her with Jordyn, a.k.a. Kylie Jenner's best friend. Khloé and her good friend Malika Haqq seemed to confirm this rumor when they commented "HARD FACTS" and a series of yelling emojis underneath an Instagram post about the story.
It's been reported Jordyn moved out of Kylie's home, where she had been living, in light of this drama, but this hasn't been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian West took to Twitter yesterday to defend Khloé after a troll asked why she would leave the house after being cheated on. (Khloé made her first public appearance on Wednesday at a work event for the style brand PrettyLittleThing.)
"Would you prefer she lose the 💰 too?" she tweeted. "A single mom has to work too boo! This was a professional commitment planned far in advance and you better believe she is not waiting on anyone to pay her bills or provide for her daughter. PERDIODT!!!"

How to Overcome ‘Impostor Syndrome’ (New York Times)
When suffering from self-doubt, it’s easy to think that you’re the only one who’s ever felt that way — but it’s not true. Even the most successful, powerful and accomplished women (and men, too) have been unsure of themselves at one point or another.
Work-Life Balance Is a Myth (Time)
The most helpful categories for us are not “work” and “life.” We should not struggle to balance the two. Instead, the best categories are “love” and “loathe.” Our goal should be to intentionally imbalance all aspects of our work toward the former and away from the latter.
Helping Stay-at-Home Parents Re-Enter the Workforce (Harvard Business Review)
Many parents returning to the workforce are still trying to balance family and career and interested in part-time or flexible work. Offering health insurance, retirement accounts, and other benefits to these recruits can make a big difference.

Totally custom & sustainable wedding rings? Oh it's possible and easy with W.R. Metalarts
This business paid a fee to be listed on Offbeat Bride because they feel their products and services are a great fit with offbeat philosophies… and we agree. Learn more about our ads.
W.R. Metalarts is also featured in our Offbeat Vendors guide!
Y'all know I love when readers of Offbeat Bride are also vendor partners with Offbeat Bride. Such is the case with husband and wife custom wedding and engagement ring artisans Will and Rosie Nevins-Alderfer. They have created over 200(!) custom wedding rings through their custom jewelry business, W.R. Metalarts and I can't get enough of ogling their creations. Plus, their rustic style, gender-neutral options, and sustainable practices totally fit our M.O.
But their rings photos are worth all the words here, and they are GORGEOUS. So let's get to know this pair of ring wizards and then get to the SPARKLIES…
What makes W.R. Metalarts stand out?
Located in Brattleboro, VT, W.R. Metalarts specializes in custom rings as well as tie bars and other bridal jewelry. They actually used Offbeat Bride extensively in their own wedding planning in 2014 so they totally get what you're running up against in a search for perfect-for-you offbeat and custom rings. If mainstream jewelry stores just aren't cutting it for you, this is exactly the type of process you'll LOVE.
Of the company’s focus on ethically sourced, custom design, owner Will Nevins-Alderfer says, “It’s a privilege and an honor to make pieces that people will wear for the rest of their lives — my favorite part of our work is offering something different and personal to people that haven’t found a great fit in in the traditional jewelry market.” Will’s wife Rosie joined the business full-time this past June and has helped to expand the social justice principles of the business.
“Our clients want to know that their materials are ethically and sustainably sourced,” says Rosie Nevins-Alderfer. “Whenever possible, we use recycled and local materials; when those are unavailable we seek suppliers that use sustainable mining practices and adhere to ethical labor standards.”
SO: custom rings made collaboratively with you and feeling good about your choice? WIN.
Check out the tie bars at their Etsy store!
Oh, and don't miss out on their ready-to-wear tie bar collection for dapper folks of all genders. They've taken their signature rustic and organic styles and applied them to tie bars so that you can extend your style into all your accessories.
Could we hear from some past clients?
Hell yes! Here are a few reviews that will ease any fears that this pair delivers the goods in the arts and the process…
"We had a blast making our rings with Will. It was a lot of fun and he kept us up to date on the whole process. We had what seemed like an odd design, but he made it work and the rings turned out beautifully. It is also not as pricey as one might think." -Erin B. (via the Knot)
"We worked closely with Will to design our wedding rings. He was excited to help us figure out what exactly we wanted. My partner wanted to use a unique metal and I wanted something simpler and a reshaping of my engagement ring to help the wedding ring match. Can't recommend Will Alderfer Metalarts enough!" –Missy S. (via Google)
"I had an idea, Will made it a beautiful reality. He kept me informed during the project, cost was fair, final packaging was delightful. I will definitely buy again from him, both custom orders and items from his shop!" –Lora W. (via Google)
I'm in… got a deal for me?
You know it. Y'all know you can get in touch, namedrop Offbeat Bride, and get a deal. Here's what's on offer…
Offbeat reader promo:
$100 off all rings and custom jewelry with a commission agreement by Dec. 31, 2018.
10% full sets of wedding bands and engagement ring (3+ rings)
Did you see a ring that sparked some interest? Don't forget, you aren't limited to what you see here. Have an idea in mind and want to have them custom-create something just for you. DO IT! Or be inspired by something you see here and swap the metal, stone, shape, etc. The rings are your oyster. Go make some magic that you'll love forever.

A cosmetóloga passou anos estudando ativos, fórmulas e técnicas estéticas.

The Most Comfortable Bralette: Bra Making with Madalynne August Recap
The song by Ella Fitzgerald goes, “Summertime, and the livin is easy.” Around these parts, that hasn’t been true in the least. The past 2 weeks have been a whirlwind. A good whirlwind, but definitely a whirlwind. Two Monday’s ago, I hopped on a plane to film 3 online classes with Creativebug in San Francisco. That Friday, I went from San Francisco to Redwood City to teach a satellite Bra Making with Madalynne workshop with Sewing Lessons of Redwood City. Hopped on a plane back to Philly on Sunday, got a nasty cold a few days after, and then this past weekend, taught another workshop at the studio. In a matter of 7 days, Bra Making with Madalynne literally went from coast to coast.
This was the 3rd workshop teaching my latest pattern with Simplicity, the 8711, and another testament to the wide range of sizes it can fit. The smallest size was a 34B and the largest size was a 42D. Linda, who traveled from Baltimore, measured a 36DD, but one of her breasts was 25% smaller. Actually, most women have one breast that is smaller than the other, so it’s not uncommon. We made a few adjustments to accommodate her size, and she as well as everyone was super happy with their 8711. Look at Colette in the pictures below – come one, you can’t fake a smile when the fit is that good. Amirite or amirite? Also, this time around, students used a different fabric, a metallic blue stretch mesh instead of a cream and floral black lace. Seriously, the fabric is D-I-V-I-N-E and everyone looked awesome!
Always one to surprise students, I asked Shaw Lewis, the owner of Expect Lace in Manayunk (psssttt… the only lingerie store in the city to carry a J cup – read my review here), to stop by at the end to give her tips on finding the best fit, her most popular styles and why, plus more. Everyone really enjoyed picking her brain and seeing different style bras that she brought on a live model. Super informative!
There was a surprise that I wasn’t in charge of. my dad, who lives in Florida, texted me Friday night at 11 PM, “I’m flying up tomorrow to see you.” I said, “Great, you want to learn how to sew a bra?!” I didn’t believe him, but shortly after 10 AM, he, my grandma and my grandpa showed up to the studio and for the first time, my dad got to see me in action. He didn’t make a bra, but he did make my day.
If a well-fitting bra wasn’t enough to make the class special, Lenox topped it off by providing their fine china. Their Radiance Collection looked stunning with the decor in the studio and it elevated an ordinary sewing class into an extraordinary day.
Fabric: All fabric + trims came from the 8711 metallic blue lingerie kit, which you can purchase here. Sewing Machines: PFAFF passport™, ambition essential™ and ambition™ 1.0 (AMAZING! Read my review of the passport™ here  and my tips for sewing on it here. Cat Claws Club Subscription Box Review – October 2018
Cat Claws Club is a bi-monthly subscription box for cats filled with lots of toys, treats, and other surprises.  (They just use whatever box will fit the items, so it varies from month to month, but it allows for some unusual item shapes, which can be fun!)
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
About Cat Claws Club
The Subscription Box: Cat Claws Club
The Cost: $24.95 every other month (currently on sale for $19.96) + $8.95 shipping
The Products: Lots of cat items, mostly toys, including some exclusive and/or new items.
Good to know: Although PayPal checkout shows as an option for this subscription, you can’t actually pay for the subscription with PayPal.  I checked out that way the first time and they contacted me, processed a PayPal refund, and I had to resubscribe with a credit card number.
Ships to: U.S.
Cat Claws Club October 2018 Review
This subscription is pretty heavy on the toys and is often, but not always, holiday-themed. This is also one of the only cat subscriptions where you get scratch pads regularly. Let’s see what was in the box this month:
There’s usually a booklet with more information on the items.
Yarnimals Ghosts – Estimated Value $4.98 (buy 4 for $9.95)
We love Yarnimals. Specifically Madison does, though the other kitties are sometimes interested as well. I actually have to take them away when he is not supervised or he starts pulling them apart. These are hand-knit in Peru and I think they are adorable.
Spider Refillable Catnip Toy – Retail Value $5.95
I feel like I have seen this toy before, but I may be misremembering or it may have come in a different subscription box. Anyway, the refillable catnip toys are growing on my kitties and this comes with a packet of catnip for that first fill. (Actually there is quite a lot there and it will last awhile.) I think this one was also popular because of the dangly legs.
Imperial Cat Squished Pumpkin Combo Scratch ‘n Shape – Retail Value $37.74
This is pretty much the only cat subscription I get that sends scratchers any longer. These are a little more robust than the ones I buy on Amazon and they hold up longer as well. Plus, I think my cats get a kick out of the complex shapes; it’s more interesting than something that is just flat.
Kitty pictures!
Angus sniffs the ghost.
Angus tries to bite the spider legs. (Sorry these shots are blurry – they’re action shots!)
Madison with the items from the box. He played with the ghosts a lot more after I put the camera away.
Monkey really, really wanted to lick catnip off these scratchers. (He will be out of the cone on the 13th or so of October. His eye infection is much better.)
Sneaky was interested but didn’t seem to want to show it. She’s like that.
Mr. Kitty was not in the best mood. He’s been rubbing his eye and trying to scratch it, so I had to put him back in the e-collar.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $48.67 for the October Cat Claws Club. This is a really high value for this box. Everything fit the Halloween theme and there was a nice variety of toy types. This was a good box for us.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  No, Cat Claws Club ships once every other month. Your first box would be December’s box if you signed up now. (But, the items are available for individual purchase from CatClaws.com.)
Value Breakdown: At $33.90 for the subscription plus shipping, you are paying approximately the following per item:
Ghosts $3.47
Spider $4.14
Scratchers $26.29
Check out all of our Cat Claws Club reviews and other great cat subscriptions in the Pet Subscription Box Directory!
Keep Track of Your Subscriptions: Add this box to your subscription list or wishlist!
What did you think of the October 2018 Cat Claws Club? Do you subscribe to any cat boxes?

High-Fashion Anti-Wedding with Rock n Roll Spirit
George and Antoinette met when they both moved to Milan to study fashion, meeting through a mutual friend that also attended the school. “We have actually been together for 12 years,” said Antoinette, “but because we both have a very rebellious spirit we didn’t want to give in to all the social and family pressure to actually get married, it wasn’t a priority for either of us. When we finally decided to do it, we wanted it to be more of a celebration of the past 12 years and as well as starting a new future together.”
They spent just €6000 on the day, opting to choose a couple of luxuries and cutting out the rest. “You really don’t need a cigar bar or personalised wax seals on your invites!” advises Antoinette. “We kept our budget low by negotiating lower prices on everything and not having things like paper invites, we also opted for a lunch with no formal entertainment afterwards. We actually hate long weddings so we wanted ours to be short and sweet.”
Antoinette was inspired by Rock Roll royalty Bianca Jagger’s wedding look, choosing a Rachel Zoe tuxedo, Sophia Webster shoes and a heart-shaped fascinator from a milliner she found on Etsy. “I ordered everything online and had it all tailored two weeks before the wedding,” said Antoinette.
Antoinette was almost going to have a go at making her own bouquet, instead made a last-minute decision to go with George to a small alternative flower boutique and pick one together. It ended up being a very modern piece with white and green Ranunculus and winter field flowers. “After all the craziness in the lead up to the day, it was a lovely thing for the two of us to do together.”
Their ceremony was a short and sweet civil ceremony. “We went for a ceremony that was just quick and contained the essentials. Almost everyone exclaimed after how perfect it was and were actually relieved it was so quick.”
The reception was held at a historic family-owned Milanese restaurant a five-minute walk from their ceremony venue. It was a small, intimate venue – they had four tables of ten people that filled the restaurant to capacity perfectly. They had a long lunch of traditional Milanese winter menu. They had DIY the floral centrepieces, ordering white garden roses and eucalyptus from the farmers market and enlisting a bridesmaid to help. They were arranged in old glass jars and vintage crystal glasses that the couple collected from different flea markets.
They cut their cake, a naked red velvet cake decorated with ranunculus, freesia and eucalyptus flowers, then moved into a local hotel bar. “We were actually surprised that people wanted to carry on the celebrations after lunch,” said Antoinette. “I wish we’d put more thought into this as I just hadn’t anticipated it.”
The couple also advise that, no matter how small and casual of a day that you’re planning, it will still take a lot of time to organise and may get stressful and intense at some points. “I also think it’s important to realise from the start that it might not be the ‘Best Day Ever’ and that that’s ok!” said Antoinette. “It’s probably going to be extremely stressful, things may go wrong and that’s completely fine, it’s not some sort of curse on your relationship. It’s life – we’re human beings – and perfect doesn’t really exist.”

A Romantic Lavender and Blush Backyard Wedding at a Private Home in Montecito
We’ll always be lovers of a good backyard wedding… there’s just something so intimate and romantic about exchanging vows in such a personal place. Today’s wedding from Lacie Hansen Photography with planning by Jill and Co Events is one of those heart stopping, happy-tear filled days that we live for. Lovely lavender bridesmaid dresses, charming fleurs from TOAST Santa Barbara and a Lele Patisserie cake that’s almost too pretty to eat. See all the reasons why we’re obsessed with this magical day below!
Marta and Steven's Santa Barbara wedding was a friend and family filled affair, celebrating at all of their favorite locations around town.
Living in Santa Barbara, the bride and groom wanted to relax and bring all of their out of town family and friends to get to experience where they live! They started with an engagement party at the brides sister and Maid of Honor's home in Montecito the year prior.
The wedding was set to take place at the parents of the brides home at the top of Hot Springs Road in Santa Barbara, with the mountains in the backdrop and the views of the ocean. The rehearsal dinner was held at the beloved San Ysidro Ranch for an intimate group, followed by a welcome bash the following day at the brides equestrian barn in Carpinteria. Carrots and apples were placed out for guests to feed the horses, and the wood fired pizza oven turned out custom flatbreads for all guests.
The wedding day was filled with special touches incorporating family. Not only was the bride married on the same lawn where her sister was married, the same family friend who married her parents, her brother, and her sister officiated the ceremony for Marta and Steven. Their beloved dog Merlin acted as ring bearers, with the brides nieces serving as the sweetest flower girls.
Cocktails were enjoyed with a panoramic view of the ocean on a decked pool prior to guests making their way down the candle lined pathway to the tented tennis court for a dinner and dancing. The dance floor was packed all night with only a break while the groom serenaded the bride from the stage. The guests enjoyed brunch at the Biltmore before they made their way home and the bride and groom jetted off to Bora Bora.
