What the GIF?! Where is my culture?

“A GIF tells a thousand stories”!

I wrote about adding GIFs in your own language (yes, not everyone speaks English!) back in 2016 highlighting the importance of open licensing. A lot has changed since then. What remains constant though is the lack of representation of the diversity that this world has to offer. Platforms like GIPHY and Tenor dominate the current GIF APIs -- meaning that the GIFs uploaded to these platforms appear in a range of social media platforms that support GIFs. Such platforms include Facebook-owned Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram (in its Story feature), Twitter and Telegram among the others.

GIF and stickers are kind of similar as both have a series of still images in a sequence. Stickers generally have a transparent background. So, all stickers can be GIFs but not all GIFs are stickers. Below are some stickers (in my native language Odia) that I have recently created.

Does a GIF speak your language?

There is a huge disparity of the linguistic representation when it comes to pop culture and social media as the majority of the digital/online interactions happen in the majority languages. The 2019 Decolonizing the World’s Languages Conference by WhoseKnowledge? that I was a part of highlights that only 7% of the world’s 7,000 languages are included as published content. The digital representation of these languages is much lower. When it comes to GIFs and stickers, there is hardly anything available in less-known languages. A big factor behind that is also the lack of writing systems/scripts as majority of the world’s language are oral and not written. But GIFs/stickers do not need to have a piece of text in them. A GIF can be made from any image -- snippets from popular media culture make great GIFs.

License matters!

GIFs lie in a weird area of licensing as they are closely related to popular culture that is generally contemporary and relevant. It also means that most content in the GIF libraries are copyrighted by whoever owns the rights of the original work. A GIF including a clip from a movie, for instance, is copyrighted by the movie production company (or whoever own the movie based on the contracts). Independent artists neither have the bandwidth nor the legal backing to acquire the copyright of a short clip to make a GIF by remixing existing content. As GIF is still an emerging area, there is not much information available in terms of guidelines on copyright. There is no ready solution available, but creating your own GIFs by animating artworks that you yourself have created can be a safer way forward. If you create something, say a hand-drawn artwork, then you will be the copyright owner of that. The next step would be to license it under a Creative Commons license (this tool makes it way easier) so that others can not only use your work, but they can share and even make derivatives (if you choose a fairly open license). Open content spreads like a wildfire!

Cut to the chase.

Neither licensing nor the knowhow of contributing GIFs that represent one’s own culture are discussed widely. So, if you are not a speaker of English (or a majority language) and Hollywood films (or Netflix web series) are not everything that you watch, your GIF-search related to your own culture would result something bizarre. I searched for “Santali” (a language spoken by 7.6 million speakers South Asia) and all I could find were “Santa Claus” GIFs. So, I took help from a friend Ramjit to create the very first two stickers in Santali which are now available on GIPHY.

It’s certainly irritating to see the internet not representing your people and your culture. A baby step that artists could take to address this issue is by creating art (GIFs and stickers in this case) to tell the story of their own society, and upload the same on platforms like GIPHY and Tenor. There will hopefully be a day when searching Santali will no longer show the Santa Claus GIFs (P.S. I have nothing against Santa Claus!).

He said Sanskrit helps us understand the soul of India. “If one has to understand the Indian worldview, one has to learn Sanskrit. If one has to appreciate the literary genius of Indian poets, one must be familiar with Sanskrit. If one has to research the civilisational richness of our great country, one has to be a student of Sanskrit,” Mr. Naidu said.  Appreciating the role of institutions such as the Karnataka Samskrit University in the preservation of classical languages, he urged the universities to engage in active research on the ancient texts and make the research outcomes relevant to the contemporary world. Mr. Naidu also called for efforts to preserve the rich literature of all six classical Indian languages — Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia. On the occasion, the university conferred an honorary doctorate on three scholars — Acharya Pradyumna, V.S. Indiramma, and Vidwan Umakanth Bhat. With iOS 13, Apple delivers new features to court users in India

Apple has finally listened to its small, but slowly growing user base in India. The iPhone-maker today announced a range of features in iOS 13 that are designed to appease users in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

First up, the company says its Siri voice assistant now offers all new and “more natural” Indian English male and female voices. It has also introduced a bilingual keyboard, featuring support for Hindi and English languages. The keyboard offers typing predictions in Devanagari Hindi that can suggest the next word as a user types and it learns from their typing over time.

Additionally, the keyboard in iOS 13 supports all of 22 Indian languages, with the inclusion of 15 new Indian language keyboards: Assamese, Bodo, Dogri, Kashmiri (Devanagari, Arabic), Konkani (Devanagari), Manipuri (Bangla, Meetei Mayek), Maithili, Nepali, Sanskrit, Santali (Devanagari, Ol Chiki), and Sindhi (Devanagari, Arabic).

The addition of these features comes as Apple cautiously grows more serious about India, where it holds about just 1% of the smartphone market share, according to research firm Counterpoint. Even as smartphone shipment is declining in much of the world, India has emerged as the fastest growing market for handsets in recent years. According to Counterpoint, more than 145 million smartphones shipped in India last year, up 10% year-over-year.

But users in India have long complained about Apple services not being fully optimized for local conditions. Siri, for instance, has so far offered limited functionalities in India, and many Apple services such as Apple Pay and Apple News are yet to launch in the nation.

The upcoming version of iOS, which will ship to a range of iPhone handsets later this year, also includes four new system fonts in Indian languages: Gurmukhi, Kannada, Odia, and Gujarati. These will “help deliver greater clarity and ease when reading in apps like Safari, typing in Messages and Mail, or swiping through Contacts,” the company said in a statement.

Additionally, there are 30 new document fonts for Indian languages Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Gurmukhi, Malayalam, Odia, and Urdu.

Apple says iOS 13 will also enable improved video downloading option for patchy networks. It says users in India can now set an optimized time of the day in video streaming apps such as Hotstar and Netflix for downloading videos. Consumption of video apps is increasingly skyrocketing in India. Just last week, Alibaba said it was investing $100 million in its short video app called Vmate in the nation.

In recent months, Apple has also improved Apple Maps in India. Earlier this year, Apple Maps added support for turn-by-turn navigation, and enabled users to book a cab — from Ola or Uber — directly from within the maps app. The company has also been aggressively hiring people to expand its maps and other software teams in  the country, according to job postings on the its site.

Improvements to software aside, Apple has also been working to reduce the cost of iPhones in India, the single major factor for their poor sales in the country. Two years ago, Apple started to assemble the iPhone 7 handset in India. It plans to ramp up its local production in the coming weeks, a person familiar with the matter told TechCrunch.

As part of local government’s ‘Make in India’ program, phone vendors that assemble phones in the country are offered tax and other benefits. Ravi Shankar Prasad, an Indian minister who oversees law and justice, telecom, and electronics and IT departments, said at a press conference earlier today (local time) that Bharatiya Janata Party, the ruling party which was reelected last month, will work on expanding Make in India program as one of its top priorities.

IN CELEBRATION OF OKPEWHO’S LIFE AND LEGACY

A year after Isidore Okpewho’s death in the US, his friends, associates and admirers converge for a literary evening in his honour in Asaba.

TRIBUTE Meeting place: Hotel Benizia in Asaba. Among the guests expected here tomorrow are the literary community’s leading lights. But this is really not about them. Rather, the meeting – which calls itself a "literary evening" – turns the spotlight on the departed literary titan, Isidore Okpewho.

It was only last year that Okpewho closed his eyes to this side of existence at 74. Indeed, it’d be exactly a year by tomorrow, September 4. This was in a hospital in Binghamton in New York, US, where he had lived and taught since 1991. More detailed reports suggested that he battled an undisclosed ailment and died "peacefully" from it.

Subsequently, on Saturday, September 17, his earthly cloak was interred at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover in New Jersey. This was after a funeral mass, among other rites, held the previous day at St Vincent de Blessed Sacrament Church in New York.

Meanwhile, the tomorrow’s "literary evening" in Asaba – billed to hold from 1pm to 5pm – is expected to feature special readings from two of Okpewho’s award-winning books (The Victims and The Last Duty), short critiques, eulogies and anecdotes, among others in celebration of the departed. Born in the Delta State town of Agbor to an Urhobo father and a Igbo mother, he had his early education at St Patrick’s College in Asaba. Later, he studied classics at the then University College (now the University of Ibadan) in Ibadan and graduated with a first-class honours degree. He would later further burnish his credentials with a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Denver in the US and a D. Litt from the University of London, UK.

He had first worked at the Federal Ministry of Education, then at the Federal Ministry of External Affairs before becoming an editor with Longman Publishers, a post he held for eight years.

While in the US for his doctorate, he had taught at the University of Buffalo, The State University of New York from 1974 to 1976, Harvard University from 1990 to 1991 and Binghamton University.

His stint in academics also saw him becoming a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 1982, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1982, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in 1988, the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute in 1990, National Humanities Center in 1997, and 2003 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Okpewho would become the president of the International Society for the Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA).

Apple has finally listened to its small, but slowly growing user base in India. The iPhone-maker today announced a range of features in iOS 13 that are designed to appease users in the world’s second largest smartphone market.

First up, the company says its Siri voice assistant now offers all new and “more natural” Indian English male and female voices. It has also introduced a bilingual keyboard, featuring support for Hindi and English languages. The keyboard offers typing predictions in Devanagari Hindi that can suggest the next word as a user types and it learns from their typing over time.

Additionally, the keyboard in iOS 13 supports 22 Indian languages, up from seven earlier. The new languages are Assamese, Bodo, Dogri, Kashmiri (Devanagari, Arabic), Konkani (Devanagari), Manipuri (Bangla, Meetei Mayek), Maithili, Nepali, Sanskrit, Santali (Devanagari, Ol Chiki), and Sindhi (Devanagari, Arabic).

The addition of these features comes as Apple cautiously grows more serious about India, a market where it has about 1% of the smartphone market share, according to research firm Counterpoint. Even as smartphone shipment is declining in much of the world, India has emerged as the fastest growing market for handsets in recent years. According to Counterpoint, more than 145 million smartphones shipped in India last year, up 10% year-over-year.

But users in India have long complained about Apple services not being fully optimized for local conditions. Siri, for instance, has so far offered limited functionalities in the nation, and many Apple services such as Apple Pay and Apple News are not available for users in India.

The upcoming version of iOS, which will ship to a range of iPhone handsets later this year, also includes four new system fonts in Indian languages: Gurmukhi, Kannada, Odia, and Gujarati. These will “help deliver greater clarity and ease when reading in apps like Safari, typing in Messages and Mail, or swiping through Contacts,” the company said in a statement.

Apple says iOS 13 will also enable improved video downloading option for patchy networks. Just last week, Alibaba said it was investing $100 million in its short video app called Vmate in the nation.

In recent months, Apple has also improved Apple Maps in India.
