I dispositivi elettronici generano un campo elettromagnetico, e visto l’utilizzo intensivo che se ne fa ogni giorno, qui ad Infodata abbiamo pensato di far un approfondimento sul tema del Tasso di assorbimento specifico, più comunemente noto con l’acronimo di SAR (dall’inglese, Specific Absorption Rate).

Cosa è il Sar? Nel dettaglio, questa misura esprime la percentuale di energia elettromagnetica assorbita dal corpo umano a seguito di un’esposizione con un campo magnetico a radiofrequenza (con frequenza portante compresa nell’intervallo 100 KHz e 10 GHz).

Siccome i valori misurati sono strettamente legati alla geometria e alla conformazione della parte del corpo esposta alle onde, i test vengono eseguiti rispettando le medesime condizioni di utilizzo della sorgente in questione. Nel caso dei telefoni cellulari, i dispositivi vengono collocati accanto all’orecchio che è (o forse era, visto l’uso che se ne fa oggi) il punto tipico per le condizioni reali di utilizzo generico, individuando appunto la testa come parte del corpo coinvolta.

Le regole in Europa. Qualsiasi dispositivo elettronico (non solo gli smartphone non può superare il valore massimo di SAR, ovvero 2 Watt per chilogrammo. In due situazioni differenti: quando è tenuto vicino al corpo (quindi, ad esempio, in tasca) e quando è tenuto vicino all’orecchio per fare una telefonata. Mentre negli Stati Uniti le regole sono diverse

Come funziona la rilevazione. In relazione alla sua unità di misura che mette in rapporto Watt e Kilogrammi (W/Kg), le rilevazioni vengono effettuate su un campione di tessuto piuttosto contenuto (solitamente uno oppure dieci grammi) e poi successivamente scalate sul Kilogrammo in modo da poter decretare quali siano le soglie ammesse secondo le varie normative vigenti nelle diverse parti del mondo.

Con riferimento al limite imposto all’interno della Comunità Europea, settato sui 2 W/Kg (riportato in seguito con 10g, Head indicante i dieci grammi di rilevazione applicata alla testa), partendo da un’elaborazione dati interna del Sole 24 Ore, ci siamo concentrati sui valori relativi agli smartphone commercializzati negli ultimi tre anni.

Nell’infografica che segue, sono riportati i valori del SAR (colorati con un gradiente che spazia dal verde dei valori più bassi al rosso di quelli più alti) abbinati anche al prezzo di lancio sia dei singoli modelli, sia per quanto riguarda i valori medi calcolati a livello di produttore (di cui è anche fornito il numero di modelli commercializzato raffigurato con la dimensione dei cerchi). E’ possibile interagire con i dati filtrando per anno di messa sul mercato, ma anche facendo un focus sul singolo brand cliccando sui rispettivi valori in modo da restringere l’analisi riportata nella parte sottostante dell’infografica in cui, oltre alla distribuzione dei singoli smartphone, vengono riportate anche le due classifiche dei cinque migliori e peggiori dispositivi in fatto di SAR. I dati sono pubblici, elaborazione del Sole 24 Ore al 10 ottobre. (Mancano i modelli più recenti).

Partiamo dalle buone notizie: tra gli smartphone per i quali sono disponibili sia prezzo di lancio che valore del SAR, sono davvero pochissimi i casi che si avvicinano alla soglia di sicurezza fissata a 2W/Kg dall’Unione Europea. Da un punto di osservazione generico, senza focalizzarci su alcun modello o brand in particolare, i valori medi nei tre anni analizzati si assestano tutti tra lo 0,67 W/Kg del 2017 e lo 0,70 W/Kg dell’anno corrente, in lieve crescita ma senza un’indicazione netta di un futuro trend preoccupante.

Gli smartphone cinesi hanno i valori più alti. Addentrandoci invece sui singoli brand per il triennio considerato, sulla base di valori medi per il SAR e prezzo di lancio, si può notare come ci siano fondamentalmente tre macro raggruppamenti. Il più numeroso è caratterizzato da una colorazione sul verde, per via di un Tasso di assorbimento specifico inferiore ad 1 W/Kg, abbinata ad un prezzo medio che difficilmente superare i cinquecento dollari e comprende otto marchi, tra i quali anche il colosso coreano Samsung. Sul fronte opposto invece compare la coppia formata da Oppo e OnePlus, i cui valori medi sono superiori ad 1,25 W/Kg con un prezzo di lancio sempre nell’intorno dei cinquecento dollari, mentre del tutto solitario, come ipotetico spartiacque a quota 1,01 W/Kg troviamo Apple che, come preventivabile, spicca poi dal punto di vista economico, assestandosi abbondantemente oltre il migliaio di dollari per singolo dispositivo. Ne esce quindi un quadro in cui in realtà non pare esserci un legame diretto tra costo dei prodotti e Tasso di assorbimento specifico visto che pur spendendo cifre non astronomiche (attorno ai cinquecento dollari), l’impatto del campo magnetico generato cambia sensibilmente a seconda dei singoli produttori.

Il caso Apple (cliccando sul marker relativo, come detto, si filtreranno anche gli altri grafici) è piuttosto curioso considerando che tra i nove modelli censiti, ce n’è solo uno che si distacca nettamente dagli altri e per la precisione trattasi dell’iPhone 8. Commercializzato a partire dal 2017, come anche la sua versione Plus e iPhone X, il modello 8 della casa di Cupertino è l’unico tra i suoi fratelli ad oltrepassare la soglia “psicologica” di 1W/Kg, arrivando addirittura a 1,32 W/Kg mentre tutti gli altri esemplari griffati con la mela si fermano sul limite di 0,99 W/kg, per un trend complessivo che vede i valori medi sui singoli anni in discesa dal 1,08 W/Kg del 2017 fino allo 0,96 W/Kg del 2019.

Samsung e Lg i più virtuosi con valori più bassi. Volendo osservare una vera par condicio, dopo Apple, è d’obbligo spendere due parole sulla diretta rivale Samsung che, come anche sottolineato dalla dimensione dei cerchi nel grafico dedicato ai produttori, figura come il brand che ha commercializzato il maggior numero di modelli diversi negli ultimi tre anni (31 censiti nell’analisi). Oltre a questo primato in termini di offerta, l’azienda coreana si aggiudica il primo posto per il valore medio più basso di SAR pari a 0,40 W/Kg (a fronte di un prezzo medio di 551 dollari), staccando la coppia di inseguitrici costituita da LG e Nokia, entrambe ferme a quota 0,46 W/Kg. Ed è proprio la stessa Samsung che, insieme alla decisamente meno conosciuta Wiko, riesce a piazzare due dei sui modelli nella top5 degli smartphone con il minore impatto in termini di energia elettromagnetica assorbita.

Il caso Wiko. Nell’elenco dei migliori dispositivi, al primo posto compare il LENNY 4 prodotto dalla sopracitata Wiko grazie ai soli 0,15 W/Kg, soffiando il primato al Note 8 di Samsung (0,17), ai quali poi fanno seguito UPULSE sempre di Wiko (0,18), e la coppia costituita dal Samsung Note 10+ e dal Redmi Note 8 di Xiaomi (entrambi a 0,19). Curiosamente, se due dei migliori cinque smartphone a livello di SAR sono prodotti da Wiko, allo stesso modo, il medesimo produttore può “vantare” un primato analogo tra i peggiori della lista con il VIEW PRIME che addirittura risulta essere il modello con il maggiore impatto per assorbimento di energia con un valore pari a 1,89 W/Kg. Completano la lista il MI A1 di Xiaomi (1,75), OnePlus 5T di OnePlus (1,68), Jerry 3 di Wiko e lo Zenfone 6 di Asus (1,57).
