I’m gonna start off with the younger persona and initially ask - do young people actually enjoy gardening? If so, why?

As a hobby, gardening is seen positively. 72% of millennials have already helped with gardening, 79% have grown a plant and 75% enjoy growing plants.

Gardening as a fun pastime is popular among young people; careers are a different matter entirely. Fewer than one in ten have considered a career in horticulture (93% haven’t, 7% have).

Appealing to youth

We asked those taking part in the survey what would make them more interested in gardening as a hobby or career. They said: better pay, owning an allotment or garden, being their own boss, the science / botanical elements, schools teaching horticulture, explaining the different careers possible and a love of nature.

“Learning about growing my own fruits and vegetables.” Female, 19.

“Gardening is awesome! Gotta encourage more people to know how to grow stuff in their garden! Even if its just runner beans ;).” Female, 17

“I like the biological side of it. I might find it more interesting if I could set up little experiments to do” Female, 20.

One in eight young people think gardening is cool - and more than half would rather go to a garden centre than a nightclub.

The appeal is rooted in mindfulness, with a desire to make their homes and gardens a nicer place to be, to improve mental health, and create a space they can escape to.

It also emerged gardening is so popular that young adults spend close to two hours during a typical week taking care of their beloved plants.

“Gardening is a very calming activity, as well as a rewarding one – everyone can enjoy the benefits it brings.”

The study found the most popular houseplants among those polled are cacti, orchids, and aloe vera, followed by basil, spider plants and peace lilies.

Outdoors, the most common are daffodils, roses, and lavender, along with tulips, mint, and hydrangea.

^just gotta be careful about houseplants vs garden plants in relation to the attraction of pollinators. 

Many also said they love shopping for gardening items – whether that’s plants, seeds, or tools.

^possible complementary products if we were to extend the brand. 

The most popular place to grow plants is on the kitchen windowsill, while living rooms, bathrooms and balconies are also popular locations for all things green.

Gardening for millennials includes both backyard veggie plots and flower beds, and offers young adults the chance to get out and help things grow.

Millennials are excited about planting and growing. More people in this age bracket (21 to 34 years old) are engaging with their backyard garden than any other age group. Gardening gets millennials outdoors, provides a break from job worries, and offers time away from the computer screen. Technology and the constant connectivity can stress young people, and plants resonate with millennials as an excellent antidote. That’s not to say that all or even most young adults have the time to work big backyard vegetable plots. Millennials may recall with fondness their parents’ home gardens, but simply can’t duplicate that effort. Instead, they may plant a small plot, or a few containers. Some millennials are thrilled to bring in houseplants that only require a little active care but provide company and help clean the air they breathe.
