thinking about tai and shauna's talk in 1x06 again, where they're talking about nat and all of their lives and tai says "who does she really have? no one" and it's so poignant when you look back on that conversation with the lenses of season 2, knowing that outside that motel room lottie fucking matthews has her cult followers ready to kidnap nat at a moment's notice

who does nat have? she has lottie, whether she knows it or not, whether she wants lottie or not, she has her

you were always its favorite. you were my favorite. made her queen to protect her. took away the crown to protect her. begged her to stay behind and was willing to let her go because that's what nat wanted.

even in death, the person sitting beside her on that plane, the person giving her comfort on that plane, was lottie.

Thinking about how Natalie has become Shauna’s new Jackie. Natalie being appointed the new leader is a replication of the invisibility and deep-seated resentment Shauna felt living in Jackie’s shadow, the original Queen Bee. Shauna was the best player on that soccer team, and yet Jackie was the Team Captain. Shauna has endured and sacrificed more than anyone in the wilderness, and yet Natalie is the one who gets to wear the crown.

From the sidelines, Shauna watches history repeat itself, the group once again gravitating toward someone else, giving Natalie the same admiration Jackie always seemed to effortlessly command. Recognition still eludes Shauna, except through fear and intimidation. Where Natalie earns loyalty, Shauna can only seize control. Even when Shauna is appointed as the new leader, the group still naturally listens to and follows Natalie’s lead after the arrival of the scientists, which causes the resentment Shauna has been burying to officially reach a breaking point.

It’s no coincidence that the first command Shauna gives as the new leader is for Natalie to butcher Coach Ben’s body. Natalie was always the hunter, she got to bask in the glory of bringing food home for a hungry, cheering crowd, while Shauna was left with the gruesome, thankless job of butchering the meat— a job equally as necessary, but never recognized. This mirrors Jackie and Shauna’s old dynamic on the soccer field— in the pilot we see Shauna doing all the hard work in the midfield so that Jackie can score the winning goal and stand in the spotlight. Now, just like she once turned on Jackie, Shauna forces Natalie to switch roles—to step into her shoes and feel the burden she’s carried all this time. She’s making her wear the weight of being invisible, of being the one who’s always needed but never celebrated.

Beneath all the resentment, Shauna harbors a quiet, reluctant admiration for Natalie—the same way she once deeply admired Jackie. Natalie manages to hold onto a kind of moral clarity that Shauna lost long ago. There’s a goodness in her, a stubborn integrity, that somehow survived the brutality of the wilderness; a goodness Shauna knows she lost a long time ago (“And you don't have to act like such a fucking saint”). And so, just like with Jackie, that admiration curdles into jealousy—and with it, an overwhelming urge to assert control, to posses it, to own it.

something about how, when lottie is the antler queen its when she drunkenly uses antlers as a headpiece while the girls are already following her lead without question, and when nat is the antler queen its when shes given a headpiece to wear by someone else. but, when shauna is the antler queen, she forces the girls in line and crowns herself in the most obnoxious and forceful way possible, decorating herself with maris hair like a serial killer collecting trophies.
