This is not my usual tumblr nonsense, but I was talking to someone on the ferry back to Aomori about places in Japan that I particularly love. So in case any of you are planning a trip, in no particular order, these are my current top 5 places in Japan.
Ise, Mie Prefecture (location of the Ise Grand Shrine, the most sacred Shinto site. Visit the outer and inner shrines, check out the Meoto Iwa/married rocks, eat udon and mochi, and buy some pearls.)
Iya Valley, Tokushima Prefecture (one of the most remote places in Japan. Take a river cruise through the Oboke Gorge, visit a historic village, walk across one of the vine bridges, and eat soba. Caveat: best experienced with a car.)
Yamagata, Yamagata Prefecture (walk up the 1,000 steps to Yama-Dera, relax at Ginzan Onsen or Zao Onsen, go to the Three Mountains of Dewa, eat beef and cherries, if they're in season. If it's winter and this is your thing: ski.)
Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture (visit Matsumoto Castle, which is original not a reconstruction, go to the art museum and the ukiyo-e museum, check out the historic shopping streets, cafe hop, eat oyaki and soba.)
Hakodate, Hokkaido Prefecture (see the view from Mt. Hakodate, check out Motomachi, the old European quarter, walk around Goryokaku Park, eat seafood at the morning market, and don't skip the milk flavor ice cream. Hokkaido is famous for dairy.)
You may have noticed that there are food recommendations attached to all of them. Everywhere in Japan has at least one local speciality that you are contractually obligated to eat. I don't make the rules.

I've made the decision to stay here in Japan for at least another year, and I have a few goals to make me feel like I'm experiencing life here to the fullest. Some (most) of them are silly little goals that feel big because of the language barrier (exacerbated by my natural shyness), but some of them are more exciting goals for sure!
Get my hair cut
Take a ballet or other dance class
Get a library card
Have a 10-minute conversation with a native speaker in Japanese that's not an italki lesson
Make a new Japanese friend
Go to the dentist
Go to a prefecture I haven't been to before*
Sing a Japanese song at karaoke
Go skiing in Zao Onsen (or some other nearby resort)
Try to get a debit card
Be able to point to every prefecture on a map and name their capital cities**
*Prefectures I went to in 2023:
Tokyo
Aichi
Gifu (briefly)
Yamagata
Miyagi
Chiba (I'm not sure going to the airport counts as going somewhere tbh, but it looked very nice from the train window!)
Prefectures I'd like to/plan to visit in 2024
Hokkaido
Aomori
Osaka
Kyoto
Nara
I'm hoping to either do a little tour around Hokkaido/Tohoku in summer OR a little tour around Kansai in winter, depending on what time I can get off when and if I have to go back to the UK in that time. And I may go somewhere for a couple of days for Golden Week, but I've not decided.
**Prefectures I can currently point to on a map:
Hokkaido (capital: Sapporo ☑️)
Aomori (capital: Aomori ☑️)
Akita (capital: Akita ☑️)
Iwate (capital: Morioka ◻️)
Yamagata (capital: Yamagata ☑️)
Miyagi (capital: Sendai ☑️)
Fukushima (capital: Fukushima ☑️)
Niigata (capital: Niigata ◻️)
Chiba (capital: Chiba ☑️)
Okinawa (capital: Naha ◻️)
I also know the rough locations of: Gunma, Tokyo, Ibaraki, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Yamanashi, Saitama, Aichi, Gifu, Ishikawa, Nagano and Fukuoka

Sendai Kaiten Line Loop Bus
Evening
Ara Ara Kashiko "Ishida Ayumi Goes!" ~Sendai Kaiten Line Loop Bus Ver.~
This aired the other day, thank you very much 🎈
There is a Miyagi performance on August 8th for the summer tour,
In Sendai, Speaking of from August 6th~8th,
Is Sendai's Tanabata Festival 🎋
Ahead of that, in the evening of August 8th!!!!!
Are fireworks---!!!!!
🎆
On that day its our Miyagi live so, after the afternoon Morning performance, Eh, what do you think about Sendai, its likely to be crowded at Sendai station, right ⚠️
While conveying to be careful,
If you're perhaps coming to Miyagi for a trip as well, There are fireworks and the next night is also the Tanabata festival, I'd be glad if you enjoyed yourself 🎋
Also,
Miyagi's summer......
There is 1 things where you can have fun I'd like to tell you about,
The other day I learned about, "Sendai Kaiten Line Loop Bus"
Here is the loop bus,
Tumblr media
From Arai station, which can be reached via Sendai Station's subway, It stops at a total of 9 stations, You pay once to ride on this fixed route bus as much as you'd like 🎈
Since its a bus that goes around the Sendai east beach area to sight-seeing spots,
Its the Kaiten Line (TL: nautical) 🎈
Arai station is within Sendai but,
8 and 9, Kawamachi Terrace and Yuriage Port, those are Natori, right,
Riding the unlimited bus line there, crossing through the city, isn't that amazing!?
I once went with my mother to go see the roses starting at "Sendai Agriculture Gardening Center",
You can pick fruits at "JR Fruits Park"
You can also suddenly experience horseback riding in this town, there is also "Kaihin Park Equestrian Hall",
Tumblr media
I got to ride a horse-san 🥹🤍
John-kun!!!
John-kun was really calm, shy and scared of insects, it was cute---!
It was my first, experience riding horses 🔰
I wondered what John-kun was thinking, How is he able to communicate, It was difficult at first but, The guide, Nakaguchi-san was really kind, and politely taught me,
With trust in Nakaguchi-san and John-kun I was able to experience horse riding, it wasn't scary at all, it was a really fun experience!!
This, is also a place where they're working to make sure the horses don't have to worry about where they're working, although John-kun was originally a racehorse, he's come to live a second life here
How many people can ride in a day, Horses also have labor standards, It was also my first time learning about this!
If there are a lot of guests, a lot of horses can work--, that's what I was told 😳❤️‍🔥
It, was quite a hot day yesterday but, its also like that for the horse, and humans wear a helmet..... I think its pretty hard but ⚠️
Hearing about it was really fresh and interesting for me,
so I ended up writing a lot!
Also "Agua Ignis Sendai" is, a suppperrrr healing and relaxing place! lol
Surrounded by greenery and water, there were also delicious things, I bought rare specialties at Marche Lien-san, this place also has Onsen and sauna ♨️
I super want to go normally as well
Tumblr media
I did some proper shopping
Like a treasure trove for various places in Miyagi, There are some products that can only be bought here locally,
Therefore even if you live in Sendai, Zao is far wayyyyy, If you come here you can buy frozen Okama Pizza!
You may be able to buy Okama Pizza elsewhere I don't know but←
Its that kind of place, its fun 🥳🤍
The last place I went on location was "Kuwamachi Terrace Yuriage"
Entering Natori, Speaking of, its here, do you remember it!
Spice curry, Emu-san!
I once visited them on break for lunch on location, its Natori's, spice curry restaurant but, I'd like to visit them someday for an interview, I was be able to visit this time~~~
It was delicious again 😋✨
Without a car, its a bit...... those that think that,
If you ride this bus,
You'll be able to experience the contents I wrote on this blog, you'll be able to experience all of it so,
I think that's really amazing!!!
Since you can get on and off whenever you want, and at the end there is a refreshing Onsen and sauna,
If you're thinking about a day trip, Definitely make it a candidate! that's what I learned 🎈
I didn't go this time but,
Damaged from the East Tohoku Earthquake "Earthquake Heritage Arahama Elementary School"
Its like, the opportunity to experience remains from the earthquake, its that kind of chance, You can experience it a bit, I wonder if I'd get the opportunity,
I think its wonderful
This loop bus, as its big theme,
"Livelihood+"
hearing that, can't you, agree?
By all means this summer, although its a limited time bus loop, I'd be glad if you experienced it!
see you ayumin <3

JAPAN MIYAGI SHIROISHI
If you are coming from Sendai, you might want to dip your toes into shiroishi city in Miyagi by taking JR train to shiroishi station.Zoom into Shiroishi (Miyagi Prefecture),hundreds of really adorable wild foxes run free in this large forest-like sanctuary, this place has been called “zao fox village” .Zao fox village is the one of the best places in Japan to go and watch for fluffy foxes. The foxes freely roam a preserve which visitor can enter. The right time to recommend? We suggest around January to March which around winter. After enjoying with cute little demons there’s another place to suggest “Miyagi Zao shiroishi Ski Resort”
Located at the foot of Mt. Wasurezu, the entire ski resort is located within the lush natural environment of a quasi-national park. Miyagi Zao Shiraishi is popular for its plentiful amounts of snow and the wonderful panorama course where you can get a great view of the Pacific Ocean on sunny days. On the high-altitude difficult course for advanced skiers, the slope is measured at a thrilling angle of 38 degrees, and the natural beech tree course can be enjoyed for its invigorating skiing on deep and fresh powder snow. In the low-altitude area, the slopes are wide and gentle, and beginners can safely ski and snowboard there. For visitors who have never skied before, we recommend attending the ski school there. There is also a fully-equipped rental shop, so you don’t need to worry if you haven’t brought any gear with you. There are onsen in the vicinity of the ski resort with Kamasaki Onsen 10 minutes away by car, and Obara Onsen just 20 minutes away. Spend a leisurely time in a hot spring surrounded by nature so that you can enjoy the unique Japanese onsen culture and skiing.
Lastly you should try Shiroishi umen originates from Shiroishi City. It’s a light meal with a tradition going back over 400 years. Rumor has it that a child whose father had a stomach illness was taught to make the noodles by a traveling monk. Shiroishi Castle then named the noodles “umen” (warm noodles) in honor of the warm, compassionate heart of a child who is devoted to their parents. The short wheat flour noodles are smooth and are prepared without oil, making them easy to digest. The noodles can be served hot or cold, so it’s perfect to eat all year round.

“Are we monsters now?” Tooka wants to know.
I give Dai a helpless look; that’s a question I won’t answer.
Dai considers.
In the end she tells the new reelers about the juhyou, the “snow monsters,” snow-and-ice-covered trees in Zao Onsen, her home. “The snow monsters”—Dai smiles, brushing her white whiskers—“are very beautiful. Their disguises make them beautiful. But they are still trees, you see, under all that frost.”

Skiing Adventure in Japan: Unveiling the Powder Paradise of the Far East
Japan, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, cherry blossoms, and technological marvels, offers much more than meets the eye. Beyond the bustling cityscapes and serene temples lies a hidden winter wonderland that attracts ski enthusiasts from around the globe. Nestled among the majestic mountains, Japan's ski resorts offer an unforgettable skiing adventure like no other. In this article, we will explore the allure of skiing in Japan, the top ski destinations, and why it has become a mecca for powder seekers.
The Allure of Skiing in Japan:
Japan boasts a unique skiing experience, characterized by abundant snowfall, high-quality powder, and the picturesque setting of snow-capped peaks. Unlike many ski destinations around the world, Japan's ski season often starts as early as November and can stretch well into May, offering an extended period for skiing enthusiasts to indulge in their passion. The country's location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its proximity to Siberia create the ideal conditions for consistent snowfall, referred to as "Japow" – a term coined to describe Japan's legendary powder snow.
Top Ski Destinations in Japan:
Hokkaido: Known as the epicenter of winter sports in Japan, Hokkaido's powder-rich resorts attract skiers and snowboarders from every corner of the globe. Niseko, the most famous of them all, boasts stunning vistas, abundant snowfall, and a vibrant international community. The nearby resorts of Rusutsu and Kiroro also offer fantastic skiing experiences with fewer crowds and equally impressive snow.
Nagano: Home to the 1998 Winter Olympics, Nagano Prefecture is a winter sports paradise. Hakuba Valley is the jewel in its crown, with a collection of ski resorts that cater to all skill levels. The region's magnificent alpine scenery and excellent snow conditions make it a must-visit for skiing enthusiasts.
Tohoku Region: Less frequented by international tourists, the Tohoku region offers a more authentic Japanese skiing experience. Resorts like Appi Kogen and Zao Onsen charm visitors with their cultural richness, hot springs, and challenging slopes.
Niigata: Along the west coast, Niigata Prefecture boasts resorts like Yuzawa and Myoko Kogen. Easily accessible from Tokyo, these areas provide ample opportunities for both beginners and advanced skiers to carve through the powder.
Why Japan is a Mecca for Powder Seekers:
Abundance of Powder: Japan's unique geographical location and climatic conditions create the perfect recipe for consistent, dry powder snow. This "Japow" is a dream come true for powder hounds, providing an unmatched skiing experience.
Culture and Cuisine: Beyond the slopes, skiers in Japan are treated to a captivating cultural experience. From traditional onsen (hot springs) to delectable Japanese cuisine, including fresh seafood and mouthwatering ramen, the skiing adventure extends beyond the snow.
Modern Amenities and Hospitality: Japanese hospitality, or omotenashi, is second to none. Ski resorts in Japan offer modern amenities, top-notch services, and efficient lift systems, ensuring visitors have a seamless and enjoyable experience on and off the slopes.
Unique Terrain: Japan's ski resorts offer diverse terrain, suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner seeking gentle slopes or an expert craving challenging steeps, Japan has it all.

Omiya Ryokan, Zao ♨️
Smack in the center of Zao Onsen. This ryokan was crazy comfy with really good and hot onsen. At Omiya you can get the sense if Taisho era design elements, though it has a fresh and new feeling to it. The rooms i would say have this fusion feeling of traditional-Japanese-meets-Elizabethan-style type of thing going on, great design combo 😊
