Just want to shine a light on this place. I know them and this is legit. I’m not posting this asking for money for them, but to show it’s more than the fancy palisades uber wealthy loosing everything, because that seems to be what the news keeps showing. It was one of those almost magical places that fosters artists and housed many in the crazy LA housing situation. They had been fighting rezoning and land grabs by the general plan in their area this past year and alot of us are worried the fires will be what seals those deals. It’s nerve wracking being on the edge out here in the backcountry these days, but even living at the beach isn’t a sure bet anymore.

The Zorthian Ranch was always in the spirit of Deep Creek. One of my obsessions. So many losses in these fires.

These are photos from the Zorthian Ranch from two separate projects. The first four photos are of a hoop house I designed with the foreman Brian Carlson. We designed the hoop house to be made from mainly recycled heavy duty PVC pipe, and at over 13 meters long, 5.3 meters wide, and over 4 meters tall in the center. I also operated heavy machinery in order to grade the land in preparation for building the structure.
The last four photos are from a concrete pour for pair of hot tubs that I also helped the foreman Brian design and lead. One tub is solar heated, and the other is plumbed to be heated by propane, since the property is far away from city natural gas lines.
While working for the ranch, I aided in leading several other concrete pours, some of which were to reinforce foundations of 70 year old steep grade mountainside buildings. I did tons of work for the Ranch and can't possibly discuss it all.
I will mention however that my knowledge of sustainable systems was multiplied heavily through working to grow a substantial amount of food during the first two years of the pandemic. This proved difficult, especially in such an arid climate as the foothills of the Southern Californian San Gabriel mountains, but we grew plenty with myself as the main farm manager. This is also why I designed and pitched the hoop house to the foreman, to give us enough shade to grow food during the summer. I farmed a lot in Undergraduate university in Oregon, and working here further increased my knowledge and passion for designing and executing sustainable systems wherever possible.

Altadena, California’s Zorthian Ranch is a strange compendium of rusting vehicles, roaming llamas, junk and free spirits enjoying free rent. The 27-acre ranch is the once-home of artist Jirayr Zorthian, who died in 2004 at the age of 92. Zorthian and his first wife purchased the ranch land and they quickly began building structures and art spaces from the discarded materials of local builders and from the very land itself. The buildings and their attendant art pieces epitomize the found art / junk art movement using a mishmash of rusted metal, broken concrete, river rocks, telephone poles and the like. In addition to the artistic installations, the ranch also houses a number animals such as horses, goats, and assumedly free-range llamas. While Jirayr Zorthian has passed away, his aesthetic legacy at Zorthian Ranch is kept alive by his son, Alan Zorthian, who still resides on the property along with a number of other wandering creatives. Jirayr gained much of his fame and income from artistic pieces commissioned during World War II, including the large Pentagon mural, but these days the ranch makes most of its income from acting as a shooting location for films and photography. End of tour. The Ranch offers some amazing vistas. If it had been clearer, I could have gotten better pics of Downtown LA, but the rain clouds did allow for some pretty cool lighting. (at Zorthian Ranch) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkC48mxOVIo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Five Art Getaways from Los Angeles
Five Art Getaways from Los Angeles
Zorthian Ranch (Courtesy of Zorthian Ranch)
With planned expansions for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Hammer Museum, no less than four museums slated to open in the next few years (Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Armenian American Museum, and the Korean American Museum), and new galleries seemingly popping up every other week, there’s no…
