the quiet girl. (a different world)
starring: normani kordei as effie woods, gary dourdan as shazza zulu
set in 1992.
warning: detailed smut, use of profanity
Effie stayed to herself during most of her time at Hillman College. She happened to be the pretty, quiet girl whom minded her business. Always dressed to the nines, rarely ever in sweats and if so she styled them perfectly. Many guys would hit on her yet she turned them down, not seeming to be interested in anybody attending Hillman.
Money definitely ran in the family due to the designer items she would often sport. Her hair and nails were always done. She gave off high class, high maintenance and if you wanted to talk to her… you needed to come correct.
Her aura and mystique nature caught the attention of one particular man. She wasn’t exactly his type but something about her left him enthralled, curious. He thought she was one of the most beautiful women on this campus.
From the way she carried herself, the stride of her walk, it was a clear indication that she took care of herself.
The young woman possessed gorgeous glowing dark skin that left him mesmerized. His intense gaze would follow her wherever she would go, trying to figure out the perfect time to speak to her. Honestly, she made him a little nervous which was a first. No woman possessed the power of making him nervous. Not even Freddie.
Though, finally, today, he built the courage to approach her. “Hey, I’m Shazza. Shazza Zulu.” His sultry low gaze remaining amongst her captivating beauty while he introduced himself, holding out a hand for her to shake it.
Her doe brown eyes glancing up from her textbook to meet his low pair, noticing him piercing a hole into her being. It creeped her out a bit but she excused his actions considering the fact that he’s a very attractive man. She found his deep voice alluring.
“Effie, Effie Woods.” Her tone is soft, exuding grace. “Pleasure meeting you.” The feeling of her palm against his makes him smirk.
“The pleasure’s all mine.” Their hands disconnected moments after. “I’ve been seeing you around campus for awhile now and today I decided why not come over here to speak after all this time.” Truthfully, it had been months.
Analyzing his attire, she nods not really possessing much to say. All she knows is that he’s fine but she didn’t like his get up. He dressed pretty strange. From his attire and dreads she might’ve guessed he was a hippie. He was different, she liked that.
“I was wondering if I could take you out…?” His light green eyes scanning her frame, landing on her exposed cleavage before falling upon her red stained plump lips then her swirling brown irises.
Effie nearly shivered at his actions, feeling herself grow hot. He knew exactly what he was doing.
“Of course.” She replies, a grin etched across her glowing canvas, pulling out a piece of paper to jot her number down before handing it to him, standing to her feet. “Call me.” Looking the male up and down once more, Effie struts off into the opposite direction.
She left his head turning, watching the woman as she walked off. “Mm..” He grunts, enjoying the view. The moment she’s no longer in his peripheral, a grin creeps upon his facial features at the piece of paper in his hand.
Little did they know, Ron had been watching the pair the entire time with his jaw agape. The conversation was brief but he was close enough to hear everything. He observed Effie, noticing how she maintained her undivided attention on Shazza. Ron had been trying to spit game at Effie for the longest yet she turned him down every time. She wouldn’t even look at him for longer than thirty seconds.
Though, all it took was for Shazza to introduce himself and ask her out for the young woman to give up her number in an instant.
“Yo, man…” He began, waltzing in Shazza’s direction in pure shock. “I’ve been trying to get with that for the longest.” Shazza remains silent, his naturally low green eyes focusing on Ron. “How’d you do it?”
Deeply chuckling, Shazza slowly stands to his feet, preparing to walk away. “First I would stop referring to her as ‘that’. She isn’t an object.” Before Ron could respond, he saunters past him smoothly.
Looking dumbfounded, Ron glances around in slight embarrassment before kissing his teeth. “She isn’t an object.” He mocks the male, attempting to imitate his baritone and waltzing off.
————
Weeks flew by and sparks were flying, Shazza and Effie found themselves going on more dates after their eventful first one. At first, she feared he wouldn’t be her cup of tea but she had nothing to fear. They both equally enjoyed one another’s company. Even when they weren’t on dates, they would just hang out.
His perspective on life intrigued her. Truly, everything about Shazza intrigued Effie. They possessed completely two different backgrounds yet that’s one of the reasons why they were so close.
Hanging out with him changed her for the better. She became more social and not only just social, more open-minded. He broadened her world, helping her to see things for more than what they were. He was different than any other man she was ever romantically involved with.
Financially, he isn’t wealthy. But he was rich in spirit and soul. He wasn’t a snob. That’s all that mattered.
“What is this place?” Observing the grass and a nearby pond, her eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. It seems as if he’d brought her to a forest of some sort. The sky began to grow dark. Plus, she isn’t much of a fan of nature. The bugs, the mud, wasn’t exactly her cup of tea.
“My spot.” He disconnects their hands to saunter backward while holding out his arms with a grin. “Surprise.” His grin hadn’t fallen even after seeing the look on her face.
“Do you not see what I’m wearing?”
The young woman happened to be dressed in a designer outfit as per usual. Though, it was pretty much loungewear, it still cost a grip.
“My outfit is gonna get dirty out here.” She whines earning a deep chuckle.
“Can’t be afraid to get dirty every now and then, Effie.”
Shazza began to walk ahead of the beauty, leading her further into the grassy area. She fights her smile at his multilayered response, mindlessly following him.
It wouldn’t be long before the pair were seated on the grass, watching the pond as the two would take turns tossing nearby rocks into the body of water. “Do you think there’s anything in there?” He shrugs before observing the woman taking off her shoes and boldly sitting her bare pedicured feet into the warm water, wiggling her red painted toes.
“Wait.” Effie immediately positions her undivided attention onto the male next to her being. “I think I saw something moving.” A splash is heard as she snatches her feet out of the water frantically.
“What? Where?”
Laughter passes his throat, tossing his head backward while she glanced around in confusion. “What’s so funny, Shazza?”
“I was just kidding.” Sending a playful slap to his shoulder, she couldn’t help but to join him. He grasps both of her feet, sitting them on his lap as he began to wash and caress the pair using the pond water.
Silence falls between the pair and Effie found herself scanning the side of his canvas. His cheekbones sat perfectly high. Facial hair trimmed and not too messy. His dreads fell perfectly above his shoulders. “If this is your spot… why’d you bring me here? This should be your own personal, sacred place.” He turns his head to face her. Their eyes immediately connecting. Don’t even get her started on his eyes.
He was the most captivating man she’d ever set her eyes upon.
“You’re right, I didn’t have to bring you here. But I did. Why? Because I wanted you to see what I see.”
“And what’s that?” Their eye contact intensifying by the minute.
“The beauty of nature…” He starts, observing their surroundings passionately. “Not many people appreciate it as they should. Nature provides us with a lot of the resources we need. The air we breathe, the food we eat. You know what I mean, you’re a smart girl.”
Effie remains silent, eyeing his being closely. She hadn’t taken her eyes off of him since he began talking. “Aren’t you?”
She snaps out of her daze, “Huh?” He sends her a look, raising a brow. “Oh yeah, I’m smart. Very smart.” Chuckling nervously, she looks away and onto the pond in front of them. “But yeah… I totally understand what you’re saying. Nature can be a beautiful thing.” Now he couldn’t take his eyes off of her, staring her down intensely.
The glow of the moon began to shine against her deeply melanated skin. His top row of pearly whites embedded into bottom lip at the sight.
“Moments ago, you were complaining about getting dirty.”
“So?” She began to grow defensive.
“I’m just throwing that out there. I just… find it funny.”
“Can I throw something out there while we’re just throwing things around?” Although she was serious, Shazza couldn’t help but to laugh slightly at her choice of words. “Yes, you can.”
“This may sound weird but…” She began. No longer caring, “You give me brain orgasms, y’know like—” He immediately stops what he’s doing to stare in her direction. “You stimulate me mentally… that’s what I, um, meant.” Suddenly, his hands slides from her feet to her exposed bottom legs.
“Do I stimulate you anywhere else, Effie?”
Effie nearly gulps at his inquiry and actions, trying to avoid eye contact but he gently forced her chin in his direction. “Look at me when I’m talking to you.” The energy between the couple instantly shifted. It was sexually charged.
It was very obvious that the two possessed sexual tension. They’d only gone as far as kissing for the most part. But during their time together, there was a lot of pent up sexual energy.
The couple began to stare into one another’s irises, not exchanging a word. He’d asked a question he already knew the answer to, Shazza just desired to hear her say it. He noticed she wasn’t too big on expressing her emotions, she bottled up a lot of things… but he was going to change all of that tonight.
He wasn’t going to act upon anything unless she spoke up.
“I asked you a question.” He starts. “I expect you to answer.”
Nibbling on her bottom lip, she boldly replies, “I can show you better than I can tell you.”
“What are you waiting for then?”
His inquiry caught her off guard. Nonetheless, she takes matters into her own hands and climbs onto his lap before connecting their lips into a passionate yet loving union. Just from their kiss, they could tell they wouldn’t just be fucking… they were bound to make love.
Effie’s lips moved along with his smoothly, taking their sweet time. They had all night to do whatever they desired to do to one another. Having sex in an unknown place and in some grass is not exactly what Effie envisioned their first time together would be. But it was happening. Tonight was the night.
Lifting up her waist, Shazza gave her a hand in taking off her lacy underwear. Smirking, he places them into his pocket. “I’ll be keeping these.” Giggling, she helps him get undressed, their lips never tearing apart.
Her flowy dress coming over her head, messing up her hair which was left in its natural state. Shazza helped her embrace her 3c curls so she wore them out more often. No makeup, no clothes, no extra anything, there she was… completely bare and he loved it.
“You’re so perfect.” Her eyes fluttered lovingly in his direction at his compliment as his bare masculine hands caressed her soft back, pushing his love inside earning a loud moan. He called for the most high to not let him come so quick at the sensation she possessed. Wet, tight, and warm. She felt amazing wrapped around him.
Mouth agape, she bounces on him slowly yet still adjusting to his size. He was big. Bigger than she imagined. But he felt so good.
“Oh, Shazza…” His name falls off of her tongue in a high-pitched tone as the curve of his long, thick phallus jabbed at her spot. His lips meeting the crook of her neck to plant sensual kisses. “Fuck…” She curses, her eyebrows furrowing together in bliss, hands tightening around his shoulders.
A plethora of moans escapes her throat, tossing her head backward. The pace of her hips growing increasingly faster. “Oh, shit.” Shazza groans while fucking her from underneath the moaning young woman, head planted in her neck as his hands slid to her backside.
The sounds she produced and the mess she was leaving on his lap nearly left him speechless. He found himself glancing at the sight of where their bodies met, top row of pearly whites digging into his bottom lip. Her love faces were heavenly. The way she rode him into ecstasy was so effortless.
“You’re doing so good, love.” He praises her, her large breasts bouncing in his face. “How are you feeling? Am I making you feel good?” His questions left her whining out a, “…yes..” in between her moans and cries.
“Tell me how good I’m making you feel. Talk to me.” Shazza’s head was no longer buried into the crook of her neck. They were face to face, giving one another lustful looks full of hunger. He wanted her to be vocal so he was going to make her, whether she liked it or not.
Swiftly, he lifts both of her legs and holds the pair around his arms, widening them to go deeper as if he isn’t deep enough. Effie was no longer in control, Shazza took the upper hand. His strokes growing rough yet passionate, he wanted her to feel every vein and every stroke. He wanted her to feel the passion of his love inside her, physically and emotionally.
“Unh, unh, unh,” She moans with each stroke, eyeballs rolling to the back of her head. “Ah, so fucking good, baby. You feel so fucking good inside of me.” Shazza was slightly taken off guard by her dirty talk. “Don’t stop…” He never would’ve imagined the quietest girl at Hillman being so slutty for him.
It turned him on beyond measures.
“Fuck…” Sweat beads trailing upon his captivating canvas. “I won’t.” Amongst finding her spot, he kept pounding into that gumminess. A squeal passes her throat as she tries to hold it but she couldn’t, squirting onto his lap and pelvic area uncontrollably.
“Shazza…” A knowing grin creeps upon his pink lips at the sight, the high-pitched screams of his name meeting his eardrums. “It’s okay. Baby, let it all out. You’re doing so good. Taking me so well. So wet…” The gushiness and the smacking noises of their love making were intensifying. Their eyes connecting yet again, feeling the intensity of their sexcapades. Mouths agape in bliss.
Hearing her screams his name. The consistency of her squirting. The wetness she possessed left him hooked. At this point, they were hooked on each other.
Shazza’s pace quickened and Effie found herself bouncing up and down on top of him, faster than hydraulics just like how their orgasm was approaching. “Wanna feel you come inside of me, please…” She repeated the word ‘please’, indicating how fucked out she was.
Effie was dickmatized, completely drunk off of his dick. Babbling, nearly drooling as she used him as her toy. He allowed her to do so, enjoying this side of her.
She was no longer the quiet, innocent— actually she probably never was. It just took the right person for her open up and lay it all out on the table. Effie did just that. “Gonna cum, oh, yes…” The young woman pants, loving the feeling of her insides being dug in. Shazza watches her, maintaining the same exact pace.
“I want you to come for me, beautiful. Let it all out.” He practically moans as she tightens around his thick phallus, his orgasm approaching. “That’s it. Shit…” They began to caress one another’s back, peering into each other’s low eyes.
“I love you, ah, I love you, Shazza!” She shouts to the top of her lungs, legs shaking while her juices came pouring out of her. “I love you, fuck…” Without warning, the couple released themselves, holding one another tightly. Their bodies shook in unison, riding their highs.
The moon above was their only source of light, faintly shining amongst the couple as silence fell between the two. Both covered in each other’s sweat and Effie’s nectar, neither didn’t mind. None of their surroundings mattered, bringing themselves back to reality.
“I meant it when I said I loved you.” She speaks her truth, rebirthing herself.
These past couple of weeks— more like months were more than just the two hanging out. She was really growing to like him then soon that intense feeling of infatuation transitioned into love. She fell for him and she couldn’t hide it anymore.
Shazza brought her to climax without sex. He had her on edge even when he didn’t touch her. During their time together, she’d grown to realize she was sapiosexual. Despite that, she’d really fallen in love with Shazza.
“I meant it when I said I loved you too.” After his reply, he sends a loving peck to her lips. A bright smile fell upon her canvas, beginning to play with his beautiful dreadlocks and stare in his direction lovingly.
Neither of them moved a muscle due to the couple being much too tired to.

My enchantix redesigns that I’ve had laying around for a while. I’m going through my computer to try and clear up space and came across some winx stuff. I haven’t done the wings for them still to this day in any finalized way because they are very intimidating to me lmao. Some info here on how enchantix outfits and fairy outfits work as well as the inspirations for the clothes for each of the characters below! I’m going to include some more individual design notes from my sketchbook later too.
In my version of the winx redo, all fairy transformations have to do with a sense of self to an extent. The more sure and secure of oneself one is, the more likely certain parts of the outfits are to carry over to the other transformations. For example: I have multiple transformations for Daphne that I’ve done, but there are a lot of traits carried over in the designs (her tirar, her color scheme, cut of cloth, etc) since she was always very self assured in who she was. She was Marion and Oritel’s daughter, future queen of Domino, and the keeper of The Dragon Flame and she was going to become as strong as she could for her people and the universe so she could use The Dragon Flame as best as possible. (I swear I’ll upload her stuff at some point they’ve been collecting dust for literal years now sskdjkjfla).
The same can’t really be said of the girls here, and that’s fine too. Aisha is the one with the most confidence in who she is and that shows here in the carrying over of her metal accents (arm bands, a metal ring at her waist, albeit with a jewel in it this time) and the cloth that goes across her chest and wraps around her waist.
Another thing that can influence the appearance of a fairy transformation is closeness with another individual. Aisha at this point already knows she likes Musa (I’m going to upload a post after this going more in depth on their relationship in my version) and her double buns are influenced by that since that’s one of the main ways Musa likes to style her hair (she also helped Aisha really perfect how to do the hairstyle and as that was one of the first thigs Aisha ever really did with a friend after Anne left when she was young and not including the pixies, so it holds a lot of sentimental value to her. Musa was the one who went out of her way a LOT more than anyone else to try and get Aisha comfortable with everything. The other girls did too of course but Musa just kind of gets how it feels to be alone more than they do so they really understood each other.) Musa in turn also has armbands like Aisha and some cloth hanging from the tie around her waist in a way similar to the cloth trail around Aisha’s.
Bloom also has similar armor to Stella because of this, since Stella is Bloom’s closest friend out of the 6 and is the one who introduced her to magic and what it can mean to be a fairy.
Enchantix in itself works basically the same as it does in the show, and as the main focus of it is to save someone from your planet so you can become a guardian of it (there can be multiple guardians for a homeworld too. I always thought it was weird that it was implied there can only be one. The guardian fairies of a planet act as a protective council of sorts. They are expected to place the priority of protecting life on the planet above all else and sometimes align themselves with royalty as advisors for things if they it is requested of them by the royalty, but they are expected to be willing to break ties with any allegiance if the leader is doing things that upset the balance of the planet and enact cruelty, not that guardians have always done that in the past). As a result, it is tied closely to the culture of their homeworld, or the culture that the fairy is from if the planet doesn’t have a largely homogenous one.
Musa is based off of Chinese and Japanese culture, which is a really broad statement I know since there is so much that goes into those countries, but I tried my best to have it line up with the clothes she wears in the show and it seemed to be similar to that (and obviously her homeplanet is clearly inspired by Asia). Similar to what her original skirt seemed to be, the pants are inspired by paper lanterns, and the upper shirt part is inspired by the tops of dresses during the late tang dynasty. The design of the belt she has, although I didn’t really do a close up of it, is braided similarly to shimenawa (a rope used in ritual purification in the Shinto religion). She has an open lotus blossom that her hair is in the middle of that holds her buns in place and her makeup is based off of the Tang Dynasty and the little hair piece she has acting as her tiara thing (all the girls had one so I tried to carry that over) is based off of Quing dynasty hair styles specifically but like, similar hairstyles were used in other eras too I just liked those specifically.
Flora’s is based off of Mexican style clothes. The top part is based off of Folklorico dresses and the petal style I used for it is based off of marigold petals, which are used to lead deceased loved ones to the families shrine during Day of the Dead. Her makeup is also based off of designs seen on calaveras. Her head piece is a flower crown which is now a common staple seen in women’s fashion during festivals due to Freda Kahlo and her hair is divided into two parts. The upper part is pulled back into a braid that has a vine weaved in with it, which I took inspiration from hairstyles down there that thread ribbon into the braids.
Aisha’s was a trip to figure out. So her homeplanet really is,, something. There’s some middle eastern influence (her name is also Arabic), her mom and her when she was younger wore some 1500s style renaissance clothes, and also they have a shaman that seems to be based off of African medicine men, and then also there are mermaids wearing European style armor, so I had to do some looking around to figure out what I wanted to do here. In the end I went with Moroccan and Zulu style clothing overall with a few other influences as well and tried to mesh them together. The headpiece and the sash/hood are based off of women’s head dresses in Morocco and the facepaint, arm and leg bands are based off of traditional Zulu attire. Cowrie shells are on the bottom of the leg and arm bands as they are used in Zulu attire in the same place as well sometimes, but also because a lot of African cultures see cowries as being representative as gateways to the spirit world (a lot of cultures have the spirit world and afterlife tied to the ocean). Her stack of necklaces are based off of the necklaces worn by the people Ndebele people of South Africa. Her shorts and top are rimmed with silver and the shape of the attire itself is meant to be athletic and practical for her. It is covered in fish scales. Her ears are a different color here than they were in her winx transformation also. That isn’t an enchantix thing but a biology thing I have made up in my head for Androsian people. The fins start off a light shade and then over time settle into a darker color, which is what it will permanently be.
Tecna’s outfit is ready for the cold. For the longest time we didn’t know anything about her homeworld except that it was cold, so, anyway Russia and Siberia lmao. The green lines on her body suit have light moving through them also which I just thought was a neat idea because technology is a thing. Her glasses aren’t a permanent part of the outfit also. They come out if she wants to concentrate her magic to do something very technical and intense. I thought it would be a nice way to carry over that faceshield thing she sometimes used in her winx form. Her physical features btw are based off of the Nenets people of Siberia.
Stella’s outfit is Greek based because I’m not original and I don’t know why almost all of us collectively agreed Solaria is Greco-Roman but we sure did do it. Maybe it’s because of the word Sol being in it.
Bloom’s is just,, European lol. Domino is a Renaissance Era place it feels like (probably because of her mom’s ermine stoat cape). So there. There are some similarities of hers with Daphne’s inadvertently (family ties can influence things sometimes too, which can be seen in the Bloom and Daphne comparison sheet on my blog), but Bloom doesn’t know that. When Daphne eventually does see her in her enchantix outfit during the time of or before the movie (which does happen in my version but with a LOT of changes. Daphne still talks to Bloom though and helps out like in the movie) you bet your bottom she takes a second to collect herself (happy to see the bond is strong enough that it did manifest physically in a way, sad because she remembers what it was like to once have that transformation and the general bittersweet longing for the time before shit hit the fan. I have so much stuff about Daphne I need to upload some of it soon).
So yeah! Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk:)

The iporiyana is a image of manhood and is also specified into a younger gentleman by his father right after he has been through initiation. Animal skin headbands and ankle bands may also be worn along with a cape.
Venda
Venda girls ordinarily don a shedo, a small apron which addresses the pubic place. When girls build breasts, they put on a nwenda for the waistline or all-around a single shoulder, which can be made from brightly colored striped cloth. Beaded necklaces, bangles and headbands will also be worn.
Venda boys and adult men historically wore a loin-cloth called a tsindi. The tsindi is really a triangular bit of animal skin covering the entrance, handed amongst the legs and tied on the back. In colder temperature, they also wore a cloak more than their shoulders. Nowadays Venda gentlemen often have on shirts comprised of nwenda cloth paired with trousers.
Tsonga (Shangaan)
The Tsonga-Shangaan tribe is really an offshoot of your Zulu tribe and are predominantly found in southern Mozambique along with the northern provinces of South Africa. Usually, Tsonga gentlemen wear animal skins, although the ladies dress in beads and colourful collected skirts called xibelani, which shake every time they dance.
Indian
Indian South Africans have always preserved their cultural heritage, languages and religious beliefs, currently being possibly Christian, Hindu or Muslim. Western garments is worn from day to day, even though traditional Indian dress which include beautiful embroidered saris and sherwanis are frequently reserved for exclusive instances like weddings.
Cape Malay
Cape Malay refers to an ethnic group who were being brought to South Africa from South-East Asia through the slave trade. In Cape City, the Cape Malay neighborhood is predominantly Muslim. Like Indian South Africans, Cape Malay people today put on primarily Western garments in daily life and their classic attire to mosque, madrassah and for specific celebrations.

While narrative and oratory were important resources in recasting their identity, Nazaretha women also used non-verbal means. Isaiah [Shembe] had cast Nazaretha women as biblical heroines who defended "Israel", frequently invoking the character of Jephthah's daughter to do so. For pilgrimages and church meetings, female converts garbed themselves in the dress of a modern Jephthah's daughter, wearing a white gown named by themselves and Isaiah as umJafeta ("Jephthah"). Thus attired, Nazaretha women played the role of spiritual warriors, travelling the country and fighting on behalf of the church. Women also cultivated their skill at dance. Historically, dance was a display of military prowess; it demonstrated both bodily discipline, and solidarity with one's peers. Women's prowess at the holy dance of the church was widely praised as evidence of their valour. It was only confirmed celibates who were considered "worthy to dance for Jehovah". While dancing, women would sing regimental war songs of the old Zulu kingdom, choruses such as, "Drive them away, Lord of the nation of Mpande, We overcame them at Hlobane." Women also sung new war chants, ones composed by Isaiah. [...] Both outsiders and members of the church were impressed by the display of female asceticism on show in dance and song performance.

What it means to be a South African Bride
The Southern Africans pride in the purity of their young ladies before a proper wedding ceremony.
The ceremony of most South African weddings takes a lot of planning and deliberations before final arrangements are made as to the marriage between the young ‘virgin’ lady and the man – at least this used to be the case at some point.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; our radar focuses on the Zulu Tribe of Southern Africa.
South Africa is called the rainbow nation because of its variety of people, cultures and religions. The people follow many spiritual traditions and religious faiths. In South Africa the constitution protects freedom of religion. Everyone is free to follow whatever faith they want to, or not to follow one at all.
This means that most times nuptials are not constrained to any religion or tribe. Most Tribes engage in intra marriage.
The Zulu Weddings take many forms and shapes. Many Zulu virgins converge on the Enyokeni Zulu Royal Palace in September on a Yearly basis to celebrate the Umkhosi Womhlanga also referred to as the Reed Dance Festival.
The Reed Dance is an activity that aims to promote chastity among virgin girls and respect for women.
Reed Dance Festival
The Festival is perhaps the climax of the annual festivities on the calendar in the Zulu Tribe.
During the Reed Dance, virgins fetch the reeds from the river and take them to the palace for the Royal King to inspect.
During the course of this festival, the Zulu King chooses his Youngest Wife.
These days in Zulu weddings, the bride usually changes to more than three different Attires on the wedding day because she has to show off to her in-laws how beautiful she can be in different dresses and different colours.
Although it isn’t a Zulu custom for the Bride to wear the white wedding dress, however nowadays brides prefer to do this.
The Zulu wedding takes place at the church, and during the church wedding, the Bride Adorns her white wedding gown.
After the church wedding, the wedding ceremony then continues at Bridegroom’s house for the traditional wedding.
The bride changes into her traditional attire for this part.
During the wedding ceremony, the family of the Groom slaughters a cow to demonstrate that they have accepted the Bride into their family.
At the Traditional Wedding, the families of the bride and groom sing, dance and make merry.
The Custom then demands that the Bride puts money into the Stomach of the cow and dances round the cow as the crowd looks on.
This act signifies that she is now a full member of the family. In the Zulu Tribe, The wedding ceremony usually ends with the bride giving gifts in the form of blankets to her new family, including the compound family.
This Tradition is referred as “ukwaba”. The family then cover themselves with the blankets in an open up area where everybody can see them.
Even the long-deceased close relatives receive gifts and also the Tribe’s Heads of the Village.
The spectators then ululate, shout, and dance for the family.
After all these activities, the ceremony comes to an end and everyone returns to their respective homes. At this point, the wedding is concluded, sealed and wrapped up.
The aim of the purity before marriage for young ladies is for them to have strong morals thus giving women power over their bodies and also self-respect in addition to dignity.

More from day 3
My favorite part of the day involved an enlightening conversation with the nurse we were observing. Our discussion included topics of history, cultural and political challenges SA is facing. We began the conversation discussing holidays. Fun fact, they decorate Christmas trees in SA! SA celebrates women’s day and heritage day! Women’s day celebrates the empowerment and independence of women within the villages. This seems like a wonderful way to celebrate the progress they are making for women’s rights in SA and demonstrated the importance of this movement in their culture. On heritage day, children come to school dressed in their village’s traditional cultural attire. Most villages have foregone traditional outfits so this is a special day for the older generation to honor the culture they still appreciate.  We learned that there are over 300 villages in the surrounding areas of Tzaneen alone. And each village speaks their own language and has their own culture. Among the languages spoken are Sepedi, Tsonga, Xhosa, Zulu and Venda. However, all children are learning English in the village schools. The most eye-opening segment of the discussion regarded racism and the apartheid era. We diverged into this topic with the utmost sensitivity and an eagerness to hear her perspective. A sense of hesitation was evident as she took longer than usual to develop her thoughts into words. After a short pause, she expressed sadness in the reversal of progress in SA over the past 5 years. She explained that violence has risen within the villages and she felt that her people were responsible. Previously, one could walk from one village to the other, but now it is not safe. She felt that all the changes Mandela worked so hard to accomplish, access to education, integration and peace, had been dwindling. Interestingly, she also stated that she thought his retraction of the death penalty had increased crime rates as people were no longer as fearful of the consequences. I was moved by how forgiving she was of those who inflicted pain and segregation on her people. While she lived during the time of apartheid in her early youth, she primarily grew up during Mandela’s years of success. For her, apartheid was in the past but for the older generation, many still harbored anger and distrust. Sadly, from my observations and short time in SA, I agree with her. A tension and prevention of access to resources still exists. This is demonstrated in the education system. A recent protest took place in SA, where parents opposed the cost of college education. The cost is astronomical for parents in the villages, even for those who receive aid. And many of the students from the villages lack a solid foundation of education, leading to failed coursework and expulsion from college. Village schools are often deprived of books, paras, and even materials such as pencils or notebooks. To attend public school outside the villages, children would need transportation and fundamental English skills. One or both of these requirements exclude most children in the villages from public school. All leading to a cycle of oppression. “I’m really sad this is happening,” was all I could conjure up, despite all the thoughts of disgust, sadness, and injustice that swirled in my head. She smiled and said, “there is still work to be done in SA.”
