Okay but the other Soulmate au option for Tseng/Cloud is so funny to me because like

Imagine trooper Cloud waking up on his birthday both excited and terrified to see if he has a soulmark (and really he doesn’t expect to see one. Why would someone like him have a soulmark? Who would want to be bound to him for the rest of their lives anyway he was just… Cloud.) only to freeze when he sees the name looking back at him.

Just one name. No last name.

A name he knows in perfect handwriting that he does not.

Tseng.

He has heard stories about the Turks, everyone in Shinra has. About the leader of the Turks as well.

And Cloud can’t imagine what he could possibly offer to someone like Tseng. How he could ever be worthy of having someone so capable as his soulmate. He’s just some soldier flunky making his way through the infantry trying to gain as little notice as possible.

He also gives it approximately twenty seconds before a Turk (his or one of his subordinates) is breaking down his door because there is no way in hell Tseng would leave a loose end as big as Cloud Strife unaccounted for. So Cloud does the only thing he can think of that sounds semi reasonable… he sneaks out of the room through the vents and spends the day dodging every suit he sees while somehow managing not to be labeled as a deserter.
