Why do you think Deku is such a polarizing character? So many people really hate him

i've actually thought a lot about this in general because deku to me is one of my favorite anime characters ever but i think for the most part, it comes down to whether or not you think deku is making the right choices throughout the series.

a lot of people probably don't have the verbiage to explain what the phenomenon is and that is deku's idealism.

people have mixed understandings of deku's intentions as a character. he doesn't really fit along well with the typical shounen protagonist type. he's not responsible in the same way, nor is he positive and particularly upbeat.

deku is a brooding, moody and often negative individual despite. he's deeply insecure about his abilities and feels an insane sense of responsibility that most people find uncomfortable - and yet, he fails to honor that multiple times through the entirety of bnha. many parts of who he is are completely paradoxical or can feel that way.

at several points we are confronted with deku's ideals - what he believes being a hero is about. he is constantly molding who he is on the basis of what he sees.

what i think it boils down to is this - deku does not do what it is in the best interest of humanity as a whole. he lacks fundamental, puritanical "goodness" and morality we frequently see in other characters. more often than not - we witness that deku saves the person he believes needs the most saving. sometimes at the cost of other peoples agency.

a lot of it boils down to what people believe deku's intent is in that. bakugou says it best later in the series.

"i don't understand your intent."

and that's because deku is stubborn in his beliefs. i don't know how to articulate it - but your like or dislike for deku will largely depend on if you personally agree with those ideals or not. deku wants to save people who suffer most but in that - he becomes willing to overlook himself and things that come in-between that.

he takes people's griefs and shoulders that weight without being asked. he butts into the lives of others and makes his mission to save. many people view that self-sacrificial behavior as arrogance and entitlement.

his saviour complex is both his biggest asset and greatest setback as a character, but either way it has substantial relevance to who he is.

so in short, i think he's so polarizing because they find deku's concept of justice to be somewhat pretentious and high and mighty lol
