thinking about franziska and her whip, like, it’s obviously her desperate attempt to attain respect in a realm of people who will only belittle her for being a young woman, and the thing is like, it is a gambit that, to some extent, works. in aa2 she is regarded as very fearsome and strong. but the thing is that like it is a performance and it ultimately only works on people who buy into it…it’s an illusion of power that she can only wield over people who are willing to cast themselves as having less power than her (gumshoe, phoenix, etc.)—which is particularly interesting to examine in young franziska of aai. she would never, for example, try to whip von karma, despite his respect being what she ultimately wants the most at that time. there’s also the moment where she whips detective badd, and he gets very angry, and miles has to tell her to apologize—and she looks frightens, she’s confronted with just how flimsy her position is despite her bravado. buttt this leads us back to miles. because he certainly does not consider himself lesser than franziska in any sense. and yet she whips him incredibly often as they interact. he snarks about it, but he ultimately lets it happen. because he understands how important that illusion of power is to her—he doesn’t view them as competitors the same way she does. he agrees to the competition because he knows it will make her happy. he’s protecting her by letting her feel like she has power over him, because he understands just how little power she truly does have and how the family name weighs on her. and this can also tie back to him giving her the whip back at the end of aa2. the illusion has been shattered, and this leaves her feeling utterly powerless. but the whip isn’t just a symbol of how she lacked power, but also of how hard she fought anyways. it’s like he tells her, to “think deeply...about what [she] should be striking down with that whip.” she’s not a scared little girl trying to impress her father and her colleagues anymore. she’s lost, but miles is telling her that she has the strength to find the answers she needed. that she had always been strong, she was just handed shitty circumstances, but now she’s an adult and she can take back her narrative. she’s franziska von karma. and she’s not going to walk in his shadow forever. and he doesn’t want her to either!!!!
