Hacking up a reporting pipeline using Python and Excel


When I arrived at Online Drinks, the reporting process was manual, prone to errors and was taking over a full day to consolidate. We were looking to scale up and continuing the way it was wouldn’t allow us to do that effectively. We needed a solution that would be provide a higher degree of automation.
Data Sources

Our reporting process involved extracting order files out of 7 different shops, getting multiple extracts from google analytics for each of these shop, extracting information related to our marketplaces activities on Amazon, Groupon and bol.com, getting spend metrics from more than 8 different advertising channels.
For some of the datasources, we had access to the API, other only a reporting interface that could export to CSV or excel. This was due to some of our operations being outsourced to different agencies at that moment, but we were looking to insource as much of these operations as possible.
Selecting Python & Excel
Given that our business was quickly evolving, we needed a solution that would cater to integrate a growing list of datasources under short notice, the reporting requirements also being evolving. We needed a solution that was flexible and that could still be automated.
Excel provided a flexible way to handle reports, but by itself didn’t quite offer the level of automation that we were seeking. VBA was a poor choice for handling the load and transformation of data into a database & the database connection within only allowed for single data fetch and would have to be worked around to create multistep data process.
We needed a complement to Excel to provide the level of automation we wanted, at the same time as we were looking to automate our report we were also setting up airflow to cater to some of our more advanced analytics use cases. Python had an ecosystem around data processing with libraries such as pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn and a way to interact with Excel through libraries such as openpyxl or xlsxwriter. Libaries such as xlwings, further pushed the interaction between Python and Excel. Given its different qualities python seemed to be a great fit for us.
Automating the process
We were querying order data from our web-shops during the week for multiple purpose and it made sense to consolidate their extracts into a SQLite on a local drive. This made it easier to query one single table rather than dealing with 7 different file extracts.

Decision to integrate directly with Google Analytics reporting API to source the data was quickly made. The workload of have to handle multiple extracts per shops, for 7 shops and the limitation of export size to 5000 rows, justified spending time on integrating the API. Google Analytics’ integration with Adwords allowed us to deprecate one extra data source from our reporting process. Other sources could be initially handled as file exports and processed by the reporting script or imported from the SQLite database.
The data was exposed onto a pandas data-frame before being pushed to an excel report. Using pandas as the data interface and processing layer allowed for flexibility and interoperability. Using pandas datasources could be progressively migrated from raw files, to an api call or a database query without requiring any changes in the downstream pipelines. We were also not losing in terms of functionalities compared to a database, SQL queries could still be performed on the data-frame using pandasql and other operations could be done using the standard pandas API, our data-volume didn’t require using a distributed system and could perfectly run on a local laptop.
The processing step involved merging of datasets with master data, consolidation and structuring of datasets, scoring of orders’ logistic cost and leveraging Google Analytics API. Since we were using the e-commerce tracking feature of Google analytics, we were further able attribute and tie back source channels and campaigns to actual purchase data from our webshop and past user behavior.
We were looking to generate reports by country and wanted to be able to re-use single template for all the shops. Pandas can directly export to excel, but I wanted to be able to use the structured reference functionality of excel tables since they make functions within workbooks easier to understand and manage and this type of export was not supported by pandas. This required writing a wrapper around openpyxl to handle table updates since operations on tables are not natively well supported by the libraries.
Further improvements
Further improvement can be done in phases to increase the degree of automation and increase re-use.These can be done in a phased approach as the possibility to automate certain part of the reporting process become available.

Integrating all the flows into database and API calls, will improve the degree of automation in the process, and remove a time consuming step of the process, ie: extracting the different reports from the backend of websites.

Migrating the different dataset obtained through API call will allow at a later stage to fully decouple the solution. This will allow for the source data being fetched to also serve powering web-dashboards, ad-hoc analysis query…

We have already moved certain data-pull operations to Airflow, but only once every data fetch operations will be automated through API pulls, will it be possible to fully automate the generation of the reports. At that point depending on the business maturity it will be possible to see from the decoupling if using Excel for generating these automated report still make sense or if we should be looking at investing more in the setup of different dashboards.

TA505 is a prolific cybercriminal group known for its attacks against multiple financial institutions and retail companies using malicious spam campaigns and different malware. We have been following TA505 closely and detected various related activities for the past two months. In the group’s latest campaign, they started using HTML attachments to deliver malicious .XLS files that lead to downloader and backdoor FlawedAmmyy, mostly to target users in South Korea.

This blog post covers three main points involving TA505: their recent activity in specific regions, shifting tactics and payloads, and suspicious activity possibly associated with the group. We also touch on the latest TA505 developments, including an email stealer, their use of legitimate software and MSI Installer, and more.
Recent activity in Latin America and East Asia
As previously mentioned, TA505, first named by Proofpoint, is known for targeting financial enterprises. Since last December, TA505 has been very active and has been using legitimate or compromised RATs (remote access trojans) such as FlawedAmmyy, FlawedGrace, and Remote Manipulator System (RMS).
While monitoring their activities, we found that the group is still updating their tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs). In April, TA505 targeted Latin American countries Chile and Mexico, and even Italy using either FlawedAmmyy RAT or RMS RAT as payload. By the end of April, we learned that the group started to go after targets in East Asian countries such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan using FlawedAmmyy RAT as its payload.
TA505 has also recently used LOLbins and legitimate Windows OS processes to perform malicious activities and deliver a payload without being detected. As the entry point of an attack, it delivers a sophisticated email containing a malicious Excel or Word file. The group notably abuses Excel 4.0 macro — a particularly old macro likely used to evade typical macro detection.

This said macro executes a command to download the first stage payload using msiexec.exe, a Microsoft Installer tool that can download and run a Windows Installer file. The first stage payload is an MSI Installer that was created using an EXE to MSI converter.

The actual malicious payload is in the MSI Installer package. The payload can vary in each campaign, but it typically uses the FlawedAmmyy downloader, ServHelper, or RMS RAT launcher.
Payload as FlawedAmmyy downloader
The MSI Installer itself contains a FlawedAmmyy downloader, which is always signed.

The downloader will check if the infected machine is running in the Active Directory (AD) network. It then runs the “net group /domain” command and checks if “workgroup” is contained in the output result. (If it does not exist, it means that the PC is running in AD.) After performing the check, it downloads the RC4-encrypted FlawedAmmyy RAT, decrypts it, and executes it as the final payload.
We recently observed an instance where the FlawedAmmyy downloader was not digitally signed (FlawedAmmyy RAT payload is still signed, however). It could be a blip — perhaps a one-off — but it’s still notable.
Payload as ServHelper
ServHelper is classified as a backdoor, but it can also work as a downloader for FlawedGrace. If the MSI Installer package contains ServHelper as a payload, it will come with an NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System) installer.

NSIS is a legitimate tool that manages the installation for Windows, but some hacking groups also abuse it. TA505, for instance, abuses NSIS to install ServHelper. This NSIS installer has two files: (nsExec.dll and repotaj.dll) and [NSIS].nsi. The latter is a configuration file that handles files to install.

In this case, repotaj.dll, which is ServHelper, will be extracted to %TEMP% and execute with the “feast” parameter as its export function. Once ServHelper is executed, it runs a PowerShell script to get information from the infected machine.
Payload as RMS RAT
TA505 also uses RMS, a legitimate RAT, in their campaigns. If the MSI Installer package contains RMS RAT as its payload, it will include a self-extracting RAR.

This SFXRAR extracts three files to %TEMP% and executes one of the files, where exit.exe is a launcher for i.cmd; i.cmd renames kernel.dll to uninstall.exe, then executes it with parameters.

As indicated in the parameter above, kernel.dll/uninstall.exe is also SFXRAR, but password-protected. It will extract the following files (Figure 12) and execute exit.exe, where the said executable is also a launcher of i.cmd that registers winserv.exe (the actual RMS RAT) and executes it. The password used to extract from the RAR file will be passed by the parameter “-p”, which is set in i.cmd.

Updates on TA505’s tactics, techniques and procedures
Since the tail end of April through early June, we observed TA505 changing its tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) in a variety of ways. The following is a quick rundown of the group’s varying methods.
Using Amadey to distribute EmailStealer
On April 24, we detected an attack that used Amadey as its first stage payload. Amadey is a known downloader for another payload (FlawedAmmyy downloader) and EmailStealer, which steals email accounts or SMTP credentials from infected PCs.
In this particular attack, we discovered that the C&C server of EmailStealer had an open directory, allowing us to view the information that EmailStealer stole. We presume the information, primarily comprised of lists of email addresses, will be used in future attacks.
Using VBA macro
TA505 has been using Excel 4.0 macro for a while, but we recently observed the group using the usual VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) macro along with Excel 4.0 macro. However, they still hide the command and malicious URL in “UserForm” and not in VBA code.

Avoiding the use of msiexec.exe
As previously mentioned, TA505 abuses msiexec.exe to install its first stage payload, but we recently observed the group just directly downloading the first stage payload binary and executing it. Like the VBA macro code, the group just executes the downloaded file 234.exe by cmd.exe. This is possibly because endpoint security solutions easily detect msiexec.exe.
Using HTML as an attack entry point
TA505 has been using Excel file, Word document, or .WIZ files as its attack entry point. However, as mentioned earlier, the group has also started to attach an HTML link in emails to trick users into opening the Excel file.

Opening this HTML link will redirect the user to a malicious URL that hosts the malicious Excel file. The Excel file still has the same style of VBA macro, which was described in the previous section. This could mean that the group is trying to change the entry point’s file type to bypass macro detection.
In early June, for instance, we saw HTML in emails that used a friendly tone so recipients would download the Excel file. Some recent cases we observed even had the Excel file directly attached to the emails.

Suspicious activity involving TA505
While analyzing TA505’s activities, we encountered strange attacks that were very similar to TA505’s TTPs but with some differences. This section discusses a particular attack that, like the usual TA505 attack, distributes RMS RAT via Excel and SFXRAR. But it also contains Kronos, a known banking trojan; and SmokeLoader, which is another payload downloader. While the attack shows characteristics that are similar those of TA505’s attacks, we suspect that this could be a forged attack. As for the reason why we are dubious about this attack, another report has also since surfaced discussing that some threat actor was using similar tools to TA505’s.
In this attack, the basic TTPs and tools used seem similar, but we found five interesting points that set them apart:
Using .rar or .zip as attachment
The TA505 group usually attaches a malicious file without any compression. But this attack sent an email with a .rar or .zip attachment. However, this may not be a significant difference.
Using a similar image on Excel but with different macro and attribution
The following image on Excel appears similar to the one TA505 has been using.

But there are a few differences in this Excel file. For one thing, it has a different style of VBA macro. TA505 has been using Excel 4.0 macro and VBA macro without heavy obfuscation, but this particular Excel file was heavily obfuscated and had a different style.

Another factor is its different codepage. Malicious Excel files that TA505 distributed had information harvesting capabilities. For example, the codepage of Excel has always been “1251” Cyrillic (Windows), but the code page of this particular attack was “1252” Western European (Windows).

Lacking the use of fast flux infrastructure
TA505 uses fast flux, a DNS technique used to mask botnets by quickly shifting among compromised hosts, which allows cybercriminals to delay or evade detection. The domains the group has been using to distribute payloads were usually resolved across a lot of IPs.
But in this attack, the domains used to distribute the payload only had one IP. It should be noted, however, that TA505 may have used different infrastructure for this instance, or another attacker may have performed malicious activities under the guise of TA505.
Using Kronos and SmokeLoader (v2019)
TA505 previously used Amadey to distribute the FlawedAmmyy downloader before, so the use of Kronos and SmokeLoader can’t be considered strong evidence of false attribution.
Using a different infrastructure to distribute spam
The strongest evidence that this attack might not come from TA505 is that this attack operator used a different spam infrastructure. Our daily monitoring of TA505’s activities show that the group sends spam from specific IPs; this suspicious attack used different sender IPs. We couldn’t find any of the IPs used in previous attacks.
We can’t say for sure if this particular attack comes from TA505, another threat actor, an imitator, or perhaps just TA505 using another infrastructure. This reiterates the tricky business of attribution in cybersecurity, which calls for careful inspection. While it’s easy to attribute similar incidents to certain threat actors, groups, or even countries, attribution should ultimately be based on technically provable information. After all, attributions can be used to operationalize appropriate incident response and remediation.
Defending against TA505’s malicious activities
TA505 has been responsible for many large-scale attacks since at least 2014, using malicious email campaigns to distribute various banking trojans, ransomware, RATs, and backdoors. They had also targeted retail brands and even different financial companies across the world. TA505 has been focused on delivering downloaders, information stealers, and other malware — threats that can remain in affected systems if not prevented or remediated. With the group’s use of email as an entry point for malicious activities, the threat has become more serious for unwitting users and organizations. Here are some best practices:
Regularly update systems and applications.
Incorporate multilayered security mechanisms such as firewalls and intrusion detection and prevention systems.
For system administrators, secure the email gateway to prevent it from becoming an attack entry point and proactively monitor possible attack vectors.

Damocles MINI is Web-relay with 4 digital inputs and control 2 NO/NC relay outputs over the Web and M2M (SNMP, XML, Modbus/TCP). Dry contact event email or SNMP Trap alert.
Control two remote relays and four digital inputs (dry contacts) with a Web interface. Switch a relay or check the input states over an IP network.
The Damocles MINI is a SNMP / WEB relay that is typically used to remotely switch On/Off other devices or to measure energy consumption (using pulse counters at the inputs). When an input contact is closed, Damocles sends an email with customized text. Optionally, the email can be sent after a defined delay (for example, to send an alert if a freezer door stays open for more than 5 minutes).
A typical application is the sending of an email based on Dry contact inputs, remote restart or remote relay control. Relay outputs can be controlled over M2M protocols SNMP, XML over http or Modbus/TCP.

Detecting similar file directories, however, is not an easy task if done by hand. Luckily, SpaceObServer will help you find the similarities. Scan network drives without the need to install additional software on the server. Scan all shares of a complete server at the touch of a button or schedule scans. SpaceObServer can access the NTFS Change Journals of local drives and updates information about local NTFS drives continuously. - The Enterprise Edition offers even more disk space management features: Determine disk space occupied by Exchange mailboxes (right down to folder level). Linux and Unix file systems can usually be scanned via NFS (Network File System) or Samba - the Enterprise Edition allows you to scan them directly via SSH (Secure Shell). - Analyze Disk Space The size of each folder is displayed directly in the file system tree: easily discover which folders occupy most of your hard disk space. Visualize disk space usage and track down unwanted files with several visualization options. A space usage history shows development over time and provides an approximate estimate of disk space usage development for the future. View, print and export 3D bar, pie, line charts and tree maps. In a file preview you can see detailed information about selected files. Scanned directories can be merged in "Containers", allowing analyses across drives, e.g. to search for duplicate files. Statistics can be grouped by users or file extensions. Compare folders and file structures to find similar or identical trees. - Remote access with Add-ons (sold separately) The SpaceObServer Remote Client offers access to all scan results from different workstations in your network. Use the SpaceObServer Web Access to access scan results in your standard web browser. - Search for Files The highly customizable file search allows filtering your files by size, last change, last access and creation date, extension, filename and path pattern, file attributes, owner, NTFS permissions or full path length. Filter options are applied directly to the directory tree and all other views. Duplicate files can be identified by the MD5 checksum of their content or a combination of name, size and last change date, for even easier deduplication operations. - Clean up Disk Space Checked directories and files can be easily moved, zipped or deleted. You can choose to keep file permissions and create stub files for moved files. State of the art deduplication-feature: SpaceObServer can replace duplicate files with NTFS - Export Results Print reports showing the directory structure or save them as Excel, XML, PDF, HTML, CSV or text-file and export them to the clipboard. Directly send reports via e-mail. Charts can be exported in the common graphic formats JPG, GIF and PNG. - The SpaceObServer Enterprise Edition offers automated Reporting via OLE Automation The OLE Automation interface allows scheduling your exports from within your own scripts or applications. All programming languages that offer an OLE Automation interface are supported (e.g. C#, VBScript, VB.NET, Delphi, Windows PowerShell, VBA in Microsoft Office). Programming examples are included. - Complete NTFS support SpaceObServer supports Unicode file and folder names. File-based NTFS compression. Alternate Data Streams (ADS) and hardlinks are shown. SpaceObServer finds and processes file paths exceeding 255 characters. SpaceObServer analyzes NTFS permissions and can filter for files with specific access permissions. - Customized View Visibility and order of the columns can be configured for the details view and each export type separately. You can easily customize the output format, e.g. number of decimals, size unit (Byte, KB, MB, GB, TB or automatic display of an appropriate size unit) etc. - SpaceObServer supports: Unicode file and directory names. The Explorer context menu within the SpaceObServer interface. Windows File Paths longer than 255 characters. What's new: •Bugfix: Under certain conditions errors occurred in update scans, in case the scan option "Calculate Permissions (ACLs) and store in database" ("Scan > Configure Scans > Scan Options") was activated. This issue would have been shown in the "State" field of the corresponding scan. Parts of the data structure might have been stored incorrect in the database. This issue has been fixed. •Bugfix: It was possible that the scan setting "Use different credentials for scan" ("Scan > Configure Scans > Expert Settings") as well as the monthly update option ("Scan > Configure Scans > Update Options") was not persisted correctly to the database and therefore ignored in scans. These issues have been fixed. •Bugfix: The option "Limit to this Extension" on the ribbon tab "Extensions" is now also available in case a file type group is selected in the Extensions list. •Bugfix: The option "Colorize bars" on the ribbon tab "Distributions" will now be memorized and restored after an application restart. •Bugfix: The small size indicator bars shown in the background of each folder in the directory tree now visualize the correct percentage values for root folders grouped in a container. •Bugfix: The functionality to install the MS SQL Server Express Edition ("Tools > Options > System > Database") occasionally not worked correctly.
