Tumblr media
A Pegasus Airlines plane flying into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport skidded off the end of the wet runway and broke into three pieces after landing on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring 157 others, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.Speaking to reporters in the eastern province of Van, Koca said that one person had died in hospital after the accident but that none of the other wounded were in critical condition.Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said earlier that the plane was carrying 177 passengers and six crew from the western province of Izmir. He said the wounded were being treated at 18 hospitals in the area.“The plane could not hold on the runway due to poor weather conditions and skidded for around 50-60 metres,” Yerlikaya told reporters at the airport. The plane, a Boeing 737-86J, split into three pieces after what Yerlikaya said was a drop of around 30 to 40 metres at the end of the wet runway. Footage showed the plane landing and continuing at a high speed off the runway.Transport Minister Cahit Turhan said flights waiting to land in Sabiha Gokcen had been diverted to Istanbul Airport.Pegasus said in a statement that the plane had gone off the runway and that passengers were being evacuated. A spokeswoman for the company did not provide further details.Broadcaster NTV said that the plane had attempted to land in heavy tail-winds despite the previous two flights holding off due to the wind.Television footage showed the plane’s fuselage, as well as a section of it near the tail, had broken off. Passengers were being led out as the plane lay on a patch of grass next to the runway. Dozens of emergency response personnel took passengers out of the plane and carried them away on stretchers.Earlier footage showed part of the exterior of the plane had caught on fire, which state media said was extinguished by firefighters at the scene.Turkish Airlines said it had cancelled all its flight in and out of Sabiha Gokcen for the day. Three people have died and 179 were injured when a plane skidded off the runway at an Istanbul airport, caught fire and split into three after landing in rough weather.
Live images broadcast on Turkish television showed several people climbing through a large crack in the severed aircraft and escaping onto one of the wings at the rear.
The Boeing 737 operated by Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines had flown into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport from the Aegean port city of Izmir on Wednesday, NTV television reported.
The plane was apparently buffeted by strong winds and heavy rain lashing Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city.
Three Turks were killed and 179 injured, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca told reporters.
“Some passengers evacuated the plane by themselves but others are stuck inside and our rescuers are working to free them,” Transport Minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan said on CNN-Turk television.
The plane was carrying 177 passengers and six crew members, state news agency Anadolu said, revising the previous total given by Turkish authorities. Turkish media reports said there were 12 children on board.
Istanbul governor Ali Yerlikaya said the plane “slid some 60 metres (200 feet)” after skidding off the runway, and then “fell about 30-40 metres” down a bank.
The accident, which he attributed to bad weather, “could have had more serious consequences”, he said.
NTV showed images of the badly damaged plane and flames inside, which were later put out by firefighters.
After darkness fell, television footage showed dozens of rescue workers in high-visibility jackets surrounding the plane with flashlights.
Some sprayed water jets onto the severed body of the aircraft, while others could be seen climbing up onto the plane to comb through the cabin.
– ‘Strong landing’ –
According to NTV, Turhan said the plane broke after a “strong landing” at Sabiha Gokcen, one of two main international airports in Istanbul.
The front of the plane including the cockpit was sliced off from the bulk of the fuselage, and another huge fissure separated the rear of the aircraft including the tail.
Sabiha Gokcen, which lies on the Asian side of Turkey’s commercial hub, was closed and flights were being redirected to Istanbul’s main airport.
There had been very strong winds and rain in the area before the incident and poor weather conditions in Istanbul, particularly in winter, often lead to the cancellation of flights.
The Istanbul public prosecutor has launched an investigation into the incident.
The plane had landed at the airport at 1518 GMT, the private DHA news agency reported.
In January 2018, a Pegasus Boeing 737-800 slid down an embankment at Trabzon airport on the Black Sea, and landed just metres from the water with its wheels stuck in thick mud.
After four days, the plane was eventually lifted back onto the runway with engineers using cranes. All 162 passengers and six crew were safely evacuated.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sought to make Istanbul the world’s top aviation hub and in 2018 opened a new mega-airport in the city of 15 million people.
Pegasus, which has been flying for 20 years, has a fleet of 83 aircraft, including 47 Boeings and 36 Airbus planes, according to its website.

Three Dead After Boeing 737-800 Splits Open on Landing in Turkey
(Bloomberg) — At least three people were killed when a Turkish jetliner broke apart after landing in wet weather in Istanbul.
In addition, 179 people were injured when the Boeing Co. 737-800 operated by Pegasus Airlines veered off the runway at Sabiha Gokcen airport, Turkey Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, according to the Associated Press. Video footage showed passengers fleeing through gaps in the fuselage. The rear of the jet caught fire, while the front detached and came to rest upside down.
Turkish Transportation Minister Cahit Turhan said in televised comments that there were 183 people on board including six crew members. One person remains unaccounted for, the AP reported.
The single-aisle jet had flown from Izmir on Turkey’s Aegean coast, authorities said. It appeared to have plowed down a slope from the runway and stopped short of a busy road, one of the main highways going into the city, based on photos of the aircraft. The plane was traveling at 117 kilometers an hour (72 miles an hour) near the end of the runway, according to Flightradar24.
A Pegasus spokeswoman confirmed that the narrow-body was a Boeing plane, part of a fleet that includes Airbus SE A320 aircraft.
The 737-800 model, which has a good safety record, predates the 737 Max version that has been grounded worldwide since March after two fatal crashes.
“We continue to receive reports out of Istanbul, Turkey, regarding the accident involving Pegasus Airlines,” Boeing said in a statement. “Our top concern right now is for the safety and well-being of the passengers and crew onboard. We are in contact with our airline customer and have offered them our support. We stand ready to assist in any way possible.”
Sabiha Gokcen airport, located on the Asian side of Istanbul, was closed following the incident. All incoming flights diverted to a new hub on the city’s European side.
The accident wasn’t the first such incident for Pegasus. Last month, one of the airline’s 737-800s ran off the edge of a runway at the same airport after landing in bad weather, resulting in no injuries.
In January 2018, a Pegasus jet carrying 168 people slid off a runway at Turkey’s Trabzon Airport. There were no injuries reported, but one of the engines fell into the Black Sea as the Boeing aircraft slid down an embankment.
