World Cancer Day – The Introduction

Every year on 4th February we all celebrate World Cancer Day to raise awareness and fight this deadly threat to human life. In 2018, there were 18 million cancer cases around the world and it has been elevating since a long time. 9.5 million men and 8.5 million women have been diagnosed by cancer and out of which 9.6 million deaths were recorded in 2018.

In India also, more than 1400 people die due to cancer every year as recorded by the National Cancer Registry Programme of Indian Council of Medical Research. There was a huge 6% growth rate which was noticed between the periods of 2012 to 2014 in a survey among the top cancer-curing hospitals. 4, 78,180 deaths out of 29, 34,314 recorded cases came out which is 3% of the global cancer count. I always knew cancer was a thing. We all did. And up until last year I thought cancer wouldn't come near me or my family, sadly I was wrong. My grandfather got it and I believed he'd beat it. He's sadly passed away couple of weeks ago. To make things worse, Serbia has made a monstrous leap from the 40th to the first place on worldwide cancer mortality statistics in just three short years. As much as it was hard for me and my family it's hard for many other families in the world. I honestly wish we could do more to help those suffering, I want to help make the difference and instead of celebrating their life and remembering all the moments spent with them we can celebrate the new, better chapter of their lives. Today's #worldcancerday and we are lucky to be living in the world where information spreads as fast as it does and we are able to read about it and help organisations that are helping our family members. In honor of all of all cancer survivors, fighters and those who have lost their life to cancer— today, February 4th, is world cancer day; almost every person you meet has experienced cancer in some way whether a relative, friend, or they themselves have had it. Often we are so saturated through the media by hearing cancer this and cancer that, that we have become almost desensitised to the word. I encourage everyone to realise how serious of an issue this rotten disease is, and how many lives it affects. So tomorrow is world cancer day. I'm over 2 years in remission and it still feels so strange. To be able to say I'm better. It's still weird to wake up each day to find my Hickman line gone from my side. Having long hair is still strange and it feels so so strange to not have to worry about being around people incase I got an infection. Life after cancer doesn't just go back to normal. Two years down the line and I'm still struggling to come to terms with what was wrong with me. I'm not scared or ashamed of that. World cancer day is so important because it raises awareness for these types of things. Not only has this illness affected me but the people around me, my friends and family. It is also the reason I have some of the friends I couldn't live without today.
