The Boom, The Bip: The 30th Anniversary Of A Tribe Called Quest’s People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm

Writer’s Note: I distinctly remember purchasing the cassette for A Tribe Called Quest’s debut; this was the old days when new albums dropped on Tuesdays and us young Hip-Hop fanatics lined up at our local record store. I owned a low-budget radio system that was my refuge from the tension of growing up poor, marginalized,, and on the cusp of manhood, rushing home with the gold in hand.

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was unlike anything I ever heard. I was familiar with Q-Tip and the late Phife Dawg, having heard them on De La Soul’s epic “Buddy” Native Tongues remix. I had school the next day, but I stayed up attempting to learn the entire album in a night. I didn’t achieve that feat, but I’ll never forget playing the album for a friend the following afternoon and his boisterous “OH SH*T!” because of the horn loop on the album’s opener, “Push It Along,” which we learned way later in life was sampled from Grover Washington’s “Loran’s Dance.”

This album will always hold a special place in my development as a music lover and, frankly, as a Black man in America. Tip, Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi were just a few years older than me but were still in that space of discovering themselves. I too was searching answers, and ACTQ were companions in that journey, unbeknownst to them. By now, the surviving members of the group are well aware of their legacy and what they helped pioneer. The entire culture of Hip-Hop owes them a great deal of gratitude.

The late 1980s has long been considered the height of Hip-Hop’s Golden Age by some observers, and it isn’t difficult to assume why. Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick, and The Ultramagnetic MCs helped change the entire approach to rapping. De La Soul and their producer Prince Paul transformed how beats were made by digging deep into the archives of the acts of old and creating something otherworldly. And on the other side of the map, N.W.A. became talented, foul-mouthed superstars that took the industry by storm.

A Tribe Called Quest almost didn’t happen as we know it. The group’s frontman, Q-Tip, was a curious and studious Hip-Hop hopeful who landed on The Jungle Brothers’ 1988 debut album, Straight Out The Jungle. From there, Q-Tip immersed himself in all aspects of production and music, having already been blessed with one of the genre’s best vocal instruments even then. For all of the group’s talent, record labels didn’t know what to do with Tip and his three brethren, considering then that Hip-Hop was not the cultural powerhouse it is today.

Luckily for the listeners, and with Kool DJ Red Alert’s guidance, the eccentric Queens-Brooklyn quartet inked a deal with Jive Records and released their stellar debut album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. The album was a continuation of the warmth and lyrical depth exhibited by the aforementioned Plugs and the JBs, firmly anchored by the complex schemes of The Abstract and the straight-ahead grit of the Five Foot Assassin. And it is no doubt that the album was primarily a vehicle for Q-Tip to come into his own.

Overall, the album’s themes are typical of coming of age fare, but with considerable nods towards what it meant to be young and Black in New York City. It would also serve as a necessary jumpstart for Phife, who didn’t take music seriously as his longtime friend in Q-Tip, but saw the later value after coming into his own in subsequent releases. But it was People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm that gave way to the years of amazing music we’ve been blessed to experience.

It isn’t known if it was planned, but Q-Tip, real name Kamaal Fareed, turned 20 the day his album hit shelves and he turns 50 today. He may not have the world’s most extensive catalog of music, but it certainly is one of the most potent with three solo albums, dozens of guest appearances, and production credits for the likes of talented wordsmiths such as Roc Marci, Danny Brown, and more. Q-Tip was also named was named the artistic director for hip hop culture at the Kennedy Center in 2015.

Phife Dawg, who struggled with health issues later in life, passed in 2016 from complications arising from diabetes. But he too left behind a body of work that has garnered recognition and was cemented via Tribe’s final album, We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, released in 2016. Jarobi, who showed off his little known rapping ability on Tribe’s last set, found success as a chef and also formed a group with fellow Native Tongues member, Dres The Black Sheep known as evitaN. Muhammad has gone on to great heights as a DJ and producer, working alongside fellow producer, Adrian Younge in recent times.

For those of us who were alive when the album was released, and especially for those of us who purchased the record those three decades ago, it should be especially important for us to reconnect with the sound that helped shape our mental landscapes and our spiritual pursuits. Every era of Hip-Hop has its share of classic releases and the debates have raged on inside barbershop and backyards for years. Yet it should come to little surprise that even the harshest critic can find the resounding merit in comfortably placing People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm far ahead of other releases of the era.

9. A Tribe Called Quest - We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service

2016 marquera plusieurs départs importants au niveau de la musique, mais on a quand même pu revoir certains visages qui nous avaient manqué comme ceux de la bande d’A Tribe Called Quest sans malheureusement Phife Dawg qui est malheureusement décédé l’an dernier. We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service est un album qui fut lancé sans trop de promotion et qui malgré les craintes des fans (qui ont dû attendre 18 ans ce dernier album de la formation) a su montré le groupe sous ses meilleurs jours. Aidé par de nombreux complices sur ce long-jeu comme Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak ou encore le légendaire Andre 3000, ACTQ conserve sa production aux accents jazz tout en ayant un son moderne sur la totalité de la galette. Un coup de génie.

8. Kaytranada - 99.9%

Qui aurait pensé qu’un album d’un producteur se retrouverait dans mon top 10 de l’année? La plupart du temps ces albums sont des déceptions, mais ce n’est pas le cas de 99.9%. Kaytranada réussit avec son premier album à montrer toute la diversité de ces productions tout en invitant des artistes de grande renommée à venir les complémenter à presque tous les morceaux du disque. C’est l’album qui vous faut pour bien démarrer une soirée.

7. Kanye West - The Life of Pablo

Malgré une sortie catastrophique et ses mises à jour boîteuses, The Life of Pablo est l’album que j’ai le plus écouté cette année. Kanye West a su livrer un disque qui regroupe à peu toutes les phases de sa carrière tout en livrant deux ou trois morceaux qui pourraient figurer au top de son catalogue déjà très étoffé. FML, Real Friends et Wolves montrent un Kanye vulnérable qui nous rappellent les premiers disques du rappeur de Chicago. Famous, Highlights et Facts dépeignent l’artiste de manière à exposer toute sa mégalomanie. C’est donc un album qui représente très bien Kanye West et toute sa bipolarité, un long album ayant des sommets et parfois des creux, tant dans la sonorité que dans la qualité, mais qui reste toute de même un grand album de la part d’un grand artiste de notre génération.

6. The Avalanches - Wildflower

Un autre retour inespéré de l’année 2016. Le duo australien a sorti l’an dernier son deuxième album en carrière et son premier disque en 16 ans! Wildflower, bien qu’il respecte le processus de création du groupe basé grandement sur le sampling, est quand même bien différent au niveau sonore. Wildflower est un album d’été idéal qui semble déjà être timeless, si bien que je l’amènerais sur une île déserte si je n’avais qu’un choix à faire.

5. Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial

Après une dizaine d’albums sur Bandcamp, Will Toledo fait finalement son entrée sur un label majeur, Matador Records. Teens of Denial est l’un des meilleurs albums d’Indie-Rock de l’année et même de la décennie. Toledo réussit à nous faire revisiter notre jeunesse à notre plus grand bonheur sur des pièces tellement denses qu’on peut penser qu’une même pièce en contient cinq ou six. Un album d’une heure et dix minutes parsemés de morceaux grinçants et de quelques longues ballades dépassant parfois les dix minutes voici ce que propose le très jeune Will Toledo à son entrée officielle sur le circuit indie.

4. David Bowie - Blackstar

Blackstar est le dernier cadeau que nous a laissé David Bowie deux jours avant son décès. Les sept morceaux qui composent l’album sont sans taches. On revoit un Bowie qui expérimente sur des chansons comme Sue (Or In A Season of Crime) et Girl Loves Me. Bowie réalise également l’un de ses souhaits les plus chers c’est-à-dire de travailler avec un jazz band sur l’un de ces albums et c’est plus que réussi, la vision de Bowie a parfaitement a été accomplie par les musiciens. Avec cet album, Bowie livre ses adieux à la planète et on peut considérer qu’I Can’t Give Everything Away est littéralement son chant du cygne. Where the fuck did Monday go?

3. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool

Half of my life... C’est ce que l’on peut entendre sur la chanson Daydreaming d’A Moon Shaped Pool, le dernier opus du groupe légendaire Radiohead. Thom Yorke a effectivement passé presque la moitié de sa vie dans la formation britannique (Pablo Honey est sorti en 1993 et le groupe a signé sur Parlophone en 1991) et avec son ex-compagne Rachel Owen (leur union de 23 ans s’est terminée en 2015). Ces deux chapitres de sa vie étant intimement liés puisque son rôle important dans Radiohead l’éloigne de son ex-femme (qui est tragiquement décédée en 2016) et de ses enfant, Thom se livre dans plusieurs chansons d’A Moon Shaped Pool. C’est l’album le plus personnel et le plus calme du groupe, ce qui est loin d’être un problème. À son neuvième LP, Radiohead livre un de ses meilleurs albums en carrière tout en se réinventant sur un disque au complet grâce à des arrangements nettement influencés par la carrière de Jonny Greenwood.

2. James Blake - The Colour in Anything

James Blake nous a raconté sa peine d’amour en 1h20 et j’ai été conquis. Il n’y a aucun des dix-sept morceaux à jeter à la poubelle. Ils racontent tous une partie de l’histoire de la vie de Blake et se sans tomber dans la redondance ou la facilité. James Blake raffine sur The Colour In Anything ce qui était déjà d’un haut niveau sur ces deux albums précédents, son R&B mélancolique qui baigne dans l’électro est d’autant plus efficace sur cet album lorsqu’il est conducteur de textes aussi biens écrits. Un album d’exception et l’album clé de la jeune carrière de James Blake.

1. Frank Ocean - Blonde

Difficile de trouver un album plus personnel que Blonde cette année ou même dans l’histoire de la musique au grand complet. Avec Blonde, Frank Ocean nous livre la bande sonore de sa vie. Mais à mon grand bonheur, les paroles et la musique de Blonde sont facilement attachantes. On peut tout de suite se reconnaître dans Blonde et ressentir les même sentiments que Frank Ocean. Frank a donc non seulement fait la bande sonore de sa vie, mais il a aussi écrit la mienne pour une bonne partie de 2016. Les arrangements du disque sont minimalistes, mais somptueusement travaillés. N’oublions pas que l’album qui était prévu pour juillet 2015 a été repoussé à de nombreuses reprises avant de finalement sortir en août 2016. Blonde a possiblement l’une des meilleures fins d’albums de tous le temps en enchaînant White Ferrari, Seigfried, Godspeed et Futura Free. Une fin qui a fait couler quelques larmes sur mes joues au cours de l’année. Le meilleur disque de l’année et de la décennie. Merci de nous avoir fait attendre Frank.
