Margaret Beck Pritchard, the Forum's July 11th lecturer is the author of a highly regarded book, DEGREES OF LATITUDE, MAPPING COLONIAL AMERICA. The book contains several never before published historical maps and describes how important maps were in the settlement of America, substantiating boundary claims and facilitating trade. David Scott Parker will describe how the newly formed United States desperately needed direction and identity in the early 19th century and through the the work of landscape designer, Andrew Jackson Downing, and his friend and collaborator, the architect Alexander Jackson Davis, they ignited America’s interest in the Gothic style. It was Downing who promoted the idea that only “fitting, tasteful and significant dwellings” could establish the societal culture and order necessary to unify and improve the young nation. Typically, Gothic had been reserved for edifices of wealth and worship, but Downing and Davis made it available to fashionable, well-to–do members of the community.

The American Decorative Arts Forum is a support group of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The Forum is dedicated to the study, understanding, enjoyment and preservation of American fine and decorative arts.
Educational Credits - Each lecture counts as one hour of educational credit for the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), the American Society of Interior Decorators (ASID) and the International Society of Appraisers (ASA).
David Scott Parker earned his bachelor’s degree, with a concentration in architecture and architectural history, from the University of Virginia, and a master’s degree in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. David Scott Parker Architects, since its founding in 1989, has specialized in residential design and historic preservation. His award-winning firm is respected for its innovative combination of traditional forms, vernacular styles and individual expression to create, or preserve, beautiful spaces which function well in the modern world. Mr. Parker’s firm is currently involved in restoring the Mark Twain House (1873) in Hartford, CT.
