You woke up overthinking. Like continuing a conversation with yourself from your dreams, the thoughts steamrolled you into consciousness. The band was in the studio for at least another week and you had to make sure the anticipation continued to build. You had a call scheduled at nine with the record label, Bobby and some other folks who you knew by name but not by face or voice.

It was going to be a long day.

It had already been a long year and the comeback after the last tour’s fallout had felt like your sole duty. They were still solid, still ready to rock-n-roll, you just had to make sure the press and the fans knew it. You grabbed your phone off your bedside table and got to work without actually getting vertical. You checked your email, the usual rotation of social media and then finally your text messages.

Sam had sent you a link to the podcast he had been talking about the last time you’d been over to his and Dean’s place for movies, which was probably two weeks too late to still be relevant, but you added it to your library anyway. Charlie had gone on a rant about a failed side quest on her latest D&D campaign and then started planning a fantasy getaway for after the tour that wasn’t even completely scheduled yet. You didn’t reply, because you needed more caffeine in your system to keep up with her.

Then there were some random complaints about Ash and Kevin from Dean. Amongst all that there was his usual checking in and an obnoxious picture showcasing the absurd size of Ash’s bong. You groaned because Dean’s eyes in the picture were glassy and amused, but also so, so distracting. His little stoned smile always did things to you.

At least he was having fun while he was laying down tracks.

You looked your fill and then went on to the next notification on your phone. Dean and his band, Phantom Traveler, might be your employers, but they were still your friends and fawning all over the man that a good chunk of the Western world did wasn’t going to get you anywhere.

Not in this lifetime.

Your alarm buzzed, breaking the quiet of your bedroom and the illusion of a lack of responsibility. You groaned and threw off your covers. Now or never, you told yourself, and got up to start your day.

“And with the losses from last time, we need something more than just your word that we are going to make up the difference,” Crowley tacked on at the end of his spiel.

Bobby, who apparently was stuck on the 405, looked like he was going to cuss him out at any moment and you couldn’t blame him. The Zoom call had gone about as well as you had anticipated and it wasn’t over. You had enough experience to keep your face neutral, however Bobby had neither the fucks to give or the interest in maintaining civility.

“How about three platinum albums over the past twelve years?!”

Every corporate stooge winced at Bobby’s indignation, except Crowley who seemed to be delighted about it somehow. 

“We understand that Mr. Singer—- we just want our ducks in a row. Now if we can get Dean on board with some more one-on-one interviews and positive exposure. We think we can hit our pre-sale targets to ensure a longer touring schedule,” Zachariah Adler smarmed on.

“And what would that prove?” Bobby asked, protective of his boys as always.

“That you have your dog on a leash,” Crowley butt in.

“More like workhorse the way you folks are talking about him,” Bobby muttered, though you still heard him over the sound of traffic.

You had to say something. “If— we get Dean to agree, and you get your extended tour. We want more flexibility on the next album. It’s the final one in the contract and if you want Phantom Traveler to remain the face of Crossroads it would be mutually beneficial to give them some room to work.”

“That’s not really your stipulation to make Ms. Y/L/N,” Dick Roman pointed out.

Your face burned with the reprimand, but you held your chin high.

“Like hell it ain't. Anything Y/N says, I say too,” Bobby barked.

Crowley looked bored at that point. And you really didn’t want to butt in or add to your embarrassment. But no one was saying anything.

“Does that work for everyone then?” You looked at these corporate stooges in the digital eye and fought for the band, for Dean. Despite having very little in the idea of the how of it all.

Zachariah spoke first, because of course he did. “If Mr. Winchester were to agree and we see an improvement in image by the end of the year— I think that could definitely be arranged.”

Bobby huffed, but remained silent. 

You watched Crowley’s eyes dance between the other record company execs and the intensity of his mischievousness grew. “I’d love to see how you handle that— get back to me when you have something solid and we’ll be in touch.”

“That works for us,” you replied firmly, not giving into his apparent doubts on your abilities. You were a nepo-hire, everyone there knew it. But it didn’t mean you weren’t very good at your job.

“Alright— I’ve got a recording session to get to. If that’s everything—” Bobby trailed off and watched as the trio from the label became even more affronted.

“I’d like a solid date for follow up,” Dick tossed out, in a clear final challenge, but everyone knew the meeting was over.

“Recording is underway, but I’d say we’d be able to touch base by the middle of December,” you added, pretending to check the calendar.

“Stellar, you see to that,” Dick replied.

“Thank you, thank you all,” you added.

“Good talk.” Dick closed his window. You waited in the open meeting as Crowley and Zachariah said their goodbyes, watching Bobby as he looked at the ceiling of his car and ended the call for good.

“Alright then,” you muttered as you closed Zoom and tried to come to grips with what you had just promised. What you had asked for, completely unprompted.

You looked at your laptop and decided you needed to step away and clear your head. You grabbed your phone off your desk and your earbuds, heading to the corner of your office and your stationary bike. Because if anything screamed escaping to a mountain trail ride, it was this moment and the month ahead of you.

You set your usual course and tapped onto one of your workout playlists, letting the music wash over you as you pedaled toward the warm up hills. Dean wasn’t going to go along with this easily, everyone knew that. But he had come so far over the last year and you hoped that included an openness to what was best for the band, even if it meant swallowing some of his pride.

Despite what he said on the call, you knew you had to get Bobby on board. You just had to have something to sell him, a hook. Something he wouldn’t think of as a threat to Dean or the band as a whole. Something he wouldn’t want to poke too hard, just because he could.

Bobby was a naturally curious old codger, but one thing that was always guaranteed to make him wash his hands of a situation was anybody’s love life. He had no fucks to give about who was fucking who. Not all of Lee and Pam’s ongoing drama, not Sam’s summer-long tryst with the little brunette from the Yellow Eyes label, not even when Cas hooked up with the reporter for Rolling Stone mid-interview. 

Okay. That you could work with.

Somebody who could increase public opinion and be down to be Dean’s arm candy. And suddenly an evil idea crossed your mind, something so wrong and so right that you lost your footing and the bike safety locked on you as you said a very dejected ‘fuck’ out loud to your empty apartment.

You had your answer, now you just had to make it happen.

Sunday Salon / Sunday Post – A Week in the Life of Dollycas – Weekly Rewind – New Arrivals

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! September already. Why is this year flying by so fast? Remi had his 1st football game of the season last Saturday night. It is tackle, no more flags, this year. Sadly the 6th grade didn't have enough players to field their own team so they are now combined with the 7th graders. That means playing a little less and learning new positions. The team took a little time to find their rhythm and lost 0-6. Remi had some great plays including one that caused an interception. They didn't have a game this week due to the holiday weekend. You can see I have a new ride. Mr. Dollycas surprised me with a scooter. So I traded in the wheelchair for it for sporting events and other adventures. It's my favorite color - Purple! I am still getting used to operating it and just like when I was driving a car, reverse is not my strong suit.  Hopefully, I will get it all figured out soon. Two of the grands started school on Wednesday—Thomas in Second Grade and Charlotte in Kindergarten. The Varsity boys played Friday night against the team that kept them from playing for a championship last year. They went on to win the state championship. So it was time for some redemption. Kaden did not play, nor did he play the first game last week. He suffered a concussion a couple of weeks ago at practice and has been following the concussion protocol. He was finally cleared to practice last Monday and has some catching up to do. They also have a new head coach this year so all the boys are adjusting to new ways of doing things. The game was a nail-biter and there were some mistakes but the Cardinals took the lead and held it to win 20 - 16. This week is a huge game against another state champ. Kaden hopes to be ready to play. It is hard for him to stand on the sidelines and watch. He loves playing this game. It was also Youth Night at the Varsity football game where kids from Kindergarten - 8th Grade were recognized. Of course, I did my reading, blogging, and book tours all week but chasing the grandkids is so much fun. How was your week? I will say, the one thing that bookshelf tours (at least recently) allllllways disappoint me about is that basically no one has contemporary YA anymore, except maybe a handful of the very boring and over-hyped bestsellers from the 2010s, and then there’s me out here with my 150+.

Which I’ve decided to share since I made the effort of typing it up (per yesterday’s post), so if you’ve always had the burning question “which 21st century YA novels does Televinita, a 30-something, own exactly,” today is your lucky day.

• "I know Y/N it's breathtaking. Let's take a look around, and we'll go from there!"

• You looked at all 5 rooms, and the two large bathrooms. It was so stunning, you couldn't let it go.

• But, the house definitely needed work. It needed a new roof, pipes, plumbing, insulation, and it needed a heating and cooling system put in all together.

• You talked with Lawrence, and he was onboard with buying it, and fixing it up. Now, all you needed to know was pricing.

• "What are we looking at in price, Mrs. Red?" You asked.

• "Well, in my notes here, with the significant amount of damage already done to it, we are looking at about $30,000. But with the funds you have, that will be no problem to pay it off within just a year."

• You and Sims both looked at eachother for a moment, and looked back at her.

• In perfect unison, you both smiled and said "We'll take it."

• You both signed the lease, locked up and went home. You quickly called the boys for the news!

• Within a few months, you all had spent every weekend going there, fixing it to make it liveable so further renovation could continue.

• Everyone helped. The safehouse crew were excellent workers, and very excited for you both.

• The construction was nothing after a while. The gang really did a good job, and helped make the house look as beautiful as it once did.

• You created a victorian looking pond in the front yard. It was layed in concrete, and painted with blue paint.

• One day, after everyone went home, you stepped out front to admire the beautiful sunset at your new house for the first time.

• The sunset was deep Orange, and a bright blueish-purple. It reflected so nice off the white color of the house.

• Lawrence stepped out to find you. He came up behind you and wrapped his arms around you.

• "This is so perfect, Lawrence. We are so lucky. Nothing can get better than this!"

European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman - Theodora Goss

The sequel to Alchemist's Daughter keeps up the monster-mash theme, this time throwing a lot of Dracula into the mix and sending the girls on a European tour through Austria and Hungary.

When the Athena Club receives a distressing letter from Lucinda Van Helsing, they make plans to travel to Vienna to rescue her from an insane asylum and then transport her to Budapest in an effort to stop the Société des Alchemistes' monstrous experiments once and for all. Aided by Sherlock Holmes, his friend Irene Adler, Mary's former governess Mina Murray, and a strange woman named Carmilla Karnstein, the monstrous members of the Athena Club plunge headfirst into the world of vampirism and encounter several old foes as well as new.

In addition to the obvious references to Dracula, Goss also adds some characters from the novella Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, the Ayesha series by H. Rider Haggard, and some hints of The Great God Pan which will be the focus of the third and final book of the series.

They Didn’t F’ing Make It: The Breakup of Guns N’ Roses

Musical Direction… After Use Your Illusion, the band did try to get together to start work on a new album, but nothing ever came of it. The two driving musical forces in the band Axl Rose and Slash simply could not agree on anything. Rose wanted to take things into electronica music and industrial rock, while Slash was more interested in hard rock. At one point, Slash offered up a number of songs to the other members of the group, but Rose and Duff McKagan quickly rejected them.

Paul Tobias… Slash would leave the group in 1996, but problems had already begun to surface near the completion of the Use Your Illusion Tour in 1993. Axl had made the decision to replace Gilby Clark with his friend Paul Tobias without consulting anyone else. Tobias was not without musical talent because he had co-written four songs that ended up on Use Your Illusion originally written in the early days of the band. Yet, Rose’s decision to add a new member without asking any of the others did not sit well at all with the guitarist. He finally reached the conclusion by 1996 that he could no longer work with Axl in any capacity.

Egos… The creative leadership of the group had always been dominated by Axl and Slash, while the others merely existed in the group to a slightly lesser extent. Izzy Stradlin could have been another dominating figure, but that was just not in his personality. One can look at Axl Rose and Slash really existing as two alphas, which is inevitably going to lead to confrontation. If you want proof as to their stubbornness and inability to compromise, then simply look to work on other albums after the original lineup’s breakup. Axl used a number of guitarists in the making of Chinese Democracy. After Scott Weiland left Velvet Revolver, Slash pretty much refused to continue over his belief that they were bringing in an inadequate lead singer.

Financial Control ...Not only did the band fight over creative control of the group, but there was a lot of money to be made from the brand that represented Guns N’ Roses. At one point, their manager at the time talked to the other members of the group to sign their rights to the name over to Axl Rose. Everything changed after that, and the reason the other members did it was probably because they did not want to fight him anymore. Their drug problems also had a lot to do with it. Looking back, those same band members had left within a year or two of that decision. They no longer would be splitting anything equally, which is ironic because that is why Izzy Stradlin left. Duff and Slash essentially became employees of Rose. The singer would later deny that he forced the band to do so by threat of refusing to perform anymore. He correctly said that there is no way that such a move would have held up in court, but to have his manager do so emerged as a totally different scenario.

Izzy Left...Duff McKagan would say in 2011 in is autobiography that the driving force behind the band originally was the songwriting of Izzy Stradlin. His departure affected the band completely as one of the most talented musicians in the group had decided that he would no longer put up with Axl Rose. He also acted as a peacemaker whenever things got a bit out of control between Slash and Rose. The thing that had made Appetite For Destruction so good was the classic rock infused songwriting by Stradlin. You can see the difference between Appetite For Destruction and Use Your Illusion as Stradlin‘s musical influence was all over the former and very rare in the latter. Take a look at the song “14 Years,” which is one of the few songs that he wrote completely Use Your Illusion. If you listen to that track, then the entire rest of the album, you will see a huge difference between the sound. Stradlin had also been very good at creating songs that followed more traditional song structure, but as Axl took control of the recording sessions you can see where the bloated criticism came about. Many fans and rock writers alike have noted that when Izzy left the band, the heart and soul of Guns N’ Roses disappeared. They ceased to be GNR, but now became merely Axl Rose and Company.

Michael Jackson… One conspiracy theory that has never been confirmed by any of the band members had to do with the origin of Slash and Axl not getting along. Slash had collaborated with Michael Jackson multiple times including playing guitar on the song “Black and White” and appearing with him in concert. One concert appearance as the theory goes supposedly wrangled Axl Rose so much that he never for gave Slash. The reason being was that in Rose’s eyes Michael Jackson had been without a doubt guilty of child abuse and sexual abuse, which he had suffered growing up as a child. Their rift began when the guitarist agreed to perform at a benefit show for Jackson. The singer got even more angry when he found out that payment for Slash’s appearance was a big screen TV and nothing else.

Perla Hudson… Another unconfirmed break up conspiracy theory has been the presence of Perla Hudson, Slash’s ex-wife. Some have said that she had a large amount of control over her husband, and willingly drove a wedge between him and Axl. They had met in 1992 when Perla was a 17 year old groupie, who had charmed her way backstage during a show. Some have said that she was not the greatest fan of their music either. Behind the scenes they had started to call the couple Sid and Nancy, but this was never meant as a compliment. She was known to have had a negative effect on the guitarist as an enabler for his abuse of drugs and alcohol. During the day, Perla ran an escort service for extra money. They would marry in 2001, but a few years ago the two did eventually divorce. Soon after this split, Axl and Slash reconciled to form the current reunion tour.

Doug Goldstein… The band has had multiple managers over the years, who were either fired or quit. One manager that probably sped up the breakup of the original lineup was Doug Goldstein. The former manager made it clear to the group that he was more interested in being loyal to Axl Rose rather than what was best for the group. He saw the group as more of a Rose production. Goldstein was the one that went to the other band members to persuade them to sign over legal rights to the name Guns N’ Roses. Axl has denied that he ever took any part in this, but then again the singer could have stopped it at any time. Goldstein became someone to do Axl’s bidding when it came to doing certain unsavory things about the future of the group.

Drugs… Alan Nevin, the first manager for Guns N’ Roses once said what made the job so difficult was that most of the band had been addicted to smack. Drugs played a big role in the band's rise, but as Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones can attest to, you cannot simply continue on that path. They were forced to fire original drummer Steven Adler because he could not function at his job anymore. The last live show before his termination was at Farm Aid in Indiana, where he did a faceplant on his drum riser. This had embarrassed Axl Rose because he was from Indiana, and had hoped to put on a great show. The other members of the group excluding Izzy Stradlin always promised to get clean, but that never seemed to happen. This became a two edged sword as the rest of the members simply tolerated Rose’s control because they wanted to keep the Guns N’ Roses train moving. By this I mean, they needed money to maintain their very expensive drug habits. The drug lifestyle had been so tempting to Izzy Stradlin that he had to travel separately from the band in his last year in order to stay sober. Duff McKagan did not officially decide to quit drugs and alcohol until his pancreas exploded due to his two bottle a day drinking habit. For his part, Axl Rose never used drugs and always supported anyone in the band that tried to move away from them. Yet, that sympathy still did not stop him from taking over the group knowing full well that the drugs were affecting the other’s ability to actively participate in the band. You had four heroin junkies and a lead singer addicted to power. Things will probably not end well, if you rise to become the number one band in the world.

Their Success… One final factor that must be considered was that the release of Appetite For Destruction became the best selling debut album of all time. They had been a band that competed with a multitude of other groups trying to make it out of Los Angeles. They went from a relatively unknown group making modest sales on the charts to the biggest band in the world in a year. With this, there existed monumental expectations for anything that they would produce after that. This probably plagued the perfectionist Axl Rose the most. In his mind, he agonized over the legacy of the group and what they produced making all his dictatorial decisions fine in his own mind. Take a look at Izzy Stradlin because he left the group so abruptly. He could do this partially because the royalties from that album would take care of him for the rest of his life. Stradlin still made music, but those royalties did not compare with Appetite For Destruction. They had been known as a very hard working band in their early days in Los Angeles in the clubs, but a bit of that went away with the seemingly instant money and fame.

•the first time he sees you, his mouth would literally drop. He wouldn’t even try to hide how smitten he was with you from the very beginning

•he would approach you instantly, a budding smile on his face and little hearts practically floating in the air around his head

•”I never believed in love at first sight until right now.” He blurted out. You didn’t really know what to say—well, you couldn’t say anything but yes; he didn’t leave your side the whole night and threatened to beg for just one date.

•the two of you went to get pizza and shared a milkshake for your first date and then you walked around a park watching the sky turn dark. You never laughed more in your life and you both couldn’t shut up. He pouted when he left you at your door step, even though it was well after 1 am, and you kissed him even though you told yourself you wouldn’t kiss a rock star after a first date. When he left he casually told you he would see you tomorrow and you haven’t went a day without him since.

•the boys knew instantly this was different. Steven loved girls and groupies, but he NEVER shut up about you. He would just smile randomly throughout his day and the mere sight of him daydreaming of you with a smile on his face would make Axl groan

• “WOW, I’m gonna buy that shirt for Y/N!” “Steven, why would she need some tourist shirt from the crab shack in Georgia?”

“You’re right, I should get her the hat.”

“Steven, she’s never even been here!”

“That’s okay, I know she would love it here! I’m gonna tell her all about it. I want her to have something.”

•when he’s on tour, he calls you incessantly. The very first thing that morning when he wakes, before shows, after shows, when he can’t sleep, before they travel etc. He’ll send postcards from places with goofy sweet notes and keeps a little notepad of important events you’ve got going on in your life so he doesn’t forget and asks you about it.

•upon moving in together, the next most important step was obviously adopting a dog. It was the hardest decision either of you ever went through, but finally, you decided on a darling cocker spaniel. Steven carries a picture of the three of you wherever he goes and loves to show anyone he can “his little family”

•when he gets more and more caught up in drugs, he almost can’t cope with the shame he feels. It’s hard for the both of you because when you bring up the difficult topic, he cries and apologizes incessantly because he knows he’s failing you and himself and his band, and he hates that

•thankfully, you help him through it and convince him to join rehab. He credits you to helping him get sober and always refers to you in interviews as “my angel”

It was a typical night out for Guns N’ Roses. Slash and Duff were two sheets to the wind, Axl was probably going to get into a fight soon, and Izzy was sitting back and watching it all unfold before him. Steven took another look around the bar; he loved this life. He was a rock star. Every night he went out on stage and got people screaming and going crazy, he had the best band mates in the world, he was young and free...what more could he ever ask for?

Suddenly, he knew.

His eyes landed on you. He’d never seen you before, and he’d never seen anyone quite like you. There was something different that radiated off of you, like a big neon sign pointing down on you. All of the girls around you were beautiful, and yet, you made them look cheap. The way you held your head, the way your hair framed your face, the way your eyes took in the scene before you, gleaming and so full of life, he nearly buckled at the knees. His heart almost hurt. And he would do more than ask to have a night with you, no, he was already willing to beg.

A life he had never given much thought to before filled his head. A dream sequence unfolded of the two of you waking up and cooking eggs and bacon and drinking orange juice, all from a complete dinnerware set. Painting rooms and picking furniture for a house the two of you bought together to call your own. Walks in the park, picnics on the beach, summer BBQs, winter festivities together. Snuggling late at night next to one another having long conversations that quickly turned to tickle wars, watching movies underneath a fort in the living room—all of it hit him at once.

Suddenly, Steven couldn’t think of anything he wanted more than to be in love and to be loved back, and in one split second he made up his mind that he was going to have that with you.
