Cookie Run: Kingdom - Why It Isn't in a Good State

Cookie Run: Kingdom is an action role-playing gacha game developed by Devsisters. It is the sixth game in the Cookie Run franchise and the most well-known Cookie Run game in the franchise.

The gameplay is simple; the player chooses five Cookies to put in your team and the player basically spams their skills. This is used in every game mode. The player can also build their Kingdom and collect resources to make their Cookies stronger and their Kingdom better.

The game unexpectedly became really popular in late 2021. It was everywhere and you cannot really escape it. I, myself even joined the game back in November when it was still popular. Although the game's popularity would slightly decline in mid 2022, the game was still good. This wasn't until March 2023 - where things started getting different.

As of late 2023, the game isn't the same as it was. The popularity of the game is declining and the game isn't in a good state. Why did this happen? Well, multiple things:

Super Epic Cookie Banner

The Super Epic rarity was introduced on May 3rd, 2022 with the release of Clotted Cream Cookie. Unlike the other higher graded Cookies, which are Ancient Cookies, Dragon Cookies and Legendary Cookies, Super Epic Cookies are below the mentioned rarities and are similar to Epic Cookies. As of right now, there are 7 Super Epic Cookies. Their appearances in the gacha are low. However, this may change as more Super Epic Cookies may come in future updates.

Previously, their banners were simple; the player must draw to get 8 items in order to meet the Super Epic Cookie. If they're lucky, they may have a chance of getting the Super Epic Cookie during the draw. This was used with Clotted Cream Cookie, Oyster Cookie and Sherbet Cookie until Stardust Cookie's release.

Starting with Stardust Cookie's release, their banners have been rebranded with a different method; much like the Epic Cookie and Ancient/Dragon/Legendary Cookie banner, the player must draw 10 times. However, the player will have to draw many times to reach the pity system, with the pity system being 5,000 - the player has to grind constantly because of this. This wasn't well-received by the player base as the rebranded banner is considered "overwhelming" to complete. The missions for both Stardust Cookie and Capsaicin Cookie's banner were like Moonlight Cookie's banner - completing another mission in order to unlock the next one. However, because Stardust Cookie's banner only ran for 20 days, we aren't given much time to complete it (and I haven't completed it too) . Thankfully, this was changed with Shining Glitter Cookie's and Crimson Coral Cookie's release. (and thanks to this change, I was able to reach the pity system during Shining Glitter Cookie's release and I have reached the pity system for Crimson Coral Cookie in just 16 days).

Many even thought Cookie Run: Kingdom is becoming pay-to-win - and they were right, which I will explain more. No reason was given for this change, but because the Super Epic Cookie banner was rebranded in the same month as the Cookie/Pet gacha from Cookie Run: OvenBreak, I assume this was because of Korean gambling laws. I may not be 100% correct, but this might be the reason for this change.

Packages

This has been an issue for a while, but has been noticeable recently.

For a game targeted to children, the packages, especially event packages, are REALLY overpriced, even for such minor things.

Where I'm from, which is Ireland, Sea Fairy Cookie and Black Pearl Cookie's Ultimate Crystal Jam Package costs €70. If the player can buy 3 per week, this adds up to 420.

Apparently, once you fully ascend a Legendary Cookie, the player gets a pop up where they can buy one copy of the ascended Legendary Cookie, 6,000 crystals and 30 legendary soul essence for over $100 DOLLARS. Yikes...

Yes. Devsisters need money, but the fact that the packages, especially the one above are overpriced is ridiculous and it is not going to give them much money. Not everyone is pay-to-win and not everyone can afford it. It's way too much and it just proves Devsisters are straight up greedy.

Lack of Decors/Paywalled Decors

Recently, Cookie Run: Kingdom has been slowly drifting away from its building aspect to focus on the battling side of the game. Even if there is a new decor, there is a 90% chance it's going to be paywalled or limited.

The lack of Cookie decors is noticeable recently, with the Cookies not receiving a decor of their own mostly being Super Epic/Epic Cookies. Meanwhile Pitaya Dragon Cookie has a decor. While Shining Glitter Cookie, Rockstar Cookie, Peppermint Cookie and Crimson Coral Cookie did receive a decor, the decor Shining Glitter Cookie and Rockstar Cookie is able to interact to is limited and paywalled while Peppermint Cookie's decor is also paywalled.

Crystal Jams

Crystal Jams are Magic Candies but for Ancient/Dragon/Legendary Cookies. They were introduced on August 9th, 2023 during the "A Mermaid's Tale" update. The conflict of Crystal Jams for Ancient/Dragon/Legendary Cookies is a good idea on paper. However, the way it is executed is very poor.

If the player is a free-to-play player, they can only go up to 7 battles per week in just one Cookie trial. If the player uses all of them up, the player cannot do anymore or do more battles in another trial. Therefore, it is very hard to focus on both Crystal Jams. Meanwhile, pay-to-win players can easily buy these overpriced packages and easily level up the Crystal Jam in just days.

If your Crystal Jam is level 15+, the player is able to access a feature that can make your Cookie stronger. This is called "Ascension Buffs". However, looking by the name, it requires ascension to make your Cookie stronger, and Ancient/Dragon/Legendary Cookies, being the highest graded Cookies, are very hard to obtain.

Lack of Rewards/Coupon Codes

Very little rewards and coupon codes have been given since March 2023. Before, we were given LOTS of rewards. In the "Triple Cone Cup", "Legend of Red Dragon" and "Summer Soda Rock Festival" updates, no coupon codes were given at all and most of the recent updates give out small rewards now. However, we were given a coupon code after months, being CRKINDONESIA. Be sure to redeem it before December 31 if you haven't.

Iridescent Shells and Snapdragon Cookie's Hatching the Dragon Egg

The Iridescent Shells is an event where you can collect three Gem Mermaids - Aquamarine Cookie, Gold Citrine Cookie and Mystic Opal Cookie. The conflict of this gacha, like Crystal Jams, is decent, but the way it is executed is really bad.

This gacha is described as the "worst" gacha in Cookie Run: Kingdom for various reasons:

The player can only go up to 30 tries if they're a free-to-play player. If the player wants more than 30 tries, the player has to pay for it.

The player has to randomly choose a shell. If the player chooses the wrong shell instead of the shell that has a Gem Mermaid, that's it. There is no second chance.

Even worse, the Gem Mermaids are limited. If the player does not have all of the mermaids in time, they go "bye bye" and you will never get them again. It's hideous.

Hatching the Dragon Egg

This was introduced during the second-half of the Legend of Red Dragon update. In this event, the player hatches the egg to obtain Snapdragon Cookie - a Special-graded Cookie for some reason. This isn't as bad as the Iridescent Shells gacha. The player can also super hatch the egg using the Searing Snapdragon Jellies. However, there is an issue:

There is no way to obtain the Snapdragon Jellies. The only option is, of course, pay. That's it. There are no weekly events that contain these jellies, Magic Laboratory does not have it and the shops do not have it. It's just having to pay the jellies for over $20.

What's the point of this item if you're not going to make it available to everyone? When is it going to be in other shops besides paying? I'm pretty sure the only time this was available to everyone was some events, but it was only available for the update.

Repetitive Updates

The last three updates have been the same thing; Special Episode, Hall of Encounter and Higher-graded Cookie > Special Episode, Hall of Encounter and Higher-graded Cookie and Special Episode, Hall of Encounter and Higher-graded Cookie. This was fine during "Legend of Red Dragon", but when this format was used in "Summer Soda Rock Festival" and "A Mermaid's Tale", it started to get repetitive. This might be the new format of the game's updates when a new Ancient/OvenBreak Legendary isn't released, and if so, it's going to make the game's updates less fun and more boring instead.

Lack of Optimization

This is a major issue since the games release. The game's optimization has been bad since the launch. However, due to Devsisters refusing to fix their game, it has gotten much worse with every new update. The game crashes constantly and it is really slow and the game is becoming unplayable for some (myself included in my 4 1/2 year old iPad), therefore, they would probably miss future updates. Many players have tried to do EVERYTHING - clearing up storage, lowering down graphics and fps, everything, but the game still runs terribly. Many have requested this in the Cookie Run: Kingdom Discord server, most reviews mentioned the lag, and yet the devs seem to be ignorant.

TL;DR: Cookie Run: Kingdom is becoming a more pay-to-win game and it is really slow. The devs are really ignorant to the mentioned issues. They are going to keep milking it, which will make the game's popularity drop even more.

The game NEEDS a major improvement from its current state if it wants to be good again; fix your really slow game, make actual fun updates than what we have gotten recently, focus more on decors, change the ascension buffs from crystal jams to promotion buffs, redesign the Super Epic Cookie banner by reducing the pity system to 3,500-3,000 and increase the rate for the featured Cookie and potentially reduce some of the costings of your packages, especially the 5A Legendary Cookie packages.
