Thank you to @adoption.books for allowing us to share your post. “I first heard of this beautiful phrase while listening to Adoptees On (which you should really check out on Podcast). I don’t remember who Hayley was chatting with the first time, but I have heard it many times since and it’s a phrase I use often when speaking about the family that are connected to each adoptee. “Triad” is a common word used in adoption to describe the connection between birth parent, adoptee and adoptive parent. “Constellation” takes it a step further and encompasses the biological siblings, extended biological family members, adoptive grandparents, and even children or grandchildren of the adoptee. Both of these words are useful and each member can choose what works for them, referring to the adoptee in the relationship. Of course, many people are referring to more than just 3 people when they say triad, but constellation throws the net out to include anyone impacted by the adoption and their relationship with an adoptee. The constellation continues to grow as each member grows their families individually and together. In this season, I am so incredibly thankful for the constellation of beautiful souls connected to our children - both biological and not. Have you heard of this phrase before? Re-Blogging the Blogger, Part III

So, to finish the triad of adoption bloggers, I would love to introduce you to Lori Holden.  She is a parent through adoption to two children, a boy, and a girl. Lori is an advocate for open adoption, where the birthparents stay involved through raising the child and the child is aware of their adopted-ness throughout their lives.  Lori’s blog is titled “Lavender Luz: yin yanging my way” and the post I chose to share with you is titled “On DNA.”  Lori explains that some of her readers have requested that she give her opinion on nature vs. nurture in adoption.  She explains her backstory and her interest in her own past to cover most the nature part.  Lori also shares that part of her history was lost when her grandmother, who converted to Catholicism decades earlier, had kept her Jewish background a secret. Lori states that she not only likes pouring over the family photo albums because they are part of her genetic line but also because these are the people who raised her parents and their parents and so on.  Lori feels that both nature and nurture play a role in someone’s roots.  She believes that biology and biography are important and that instead of thinking “either/or”, we should think more “and.”

Lori’s stance on nature vs. nurture is that one part is just as important as the other.  According to my recent research on this, researchers are finding this to be true and possibly leaning more toward nurture.  That is not to say an adoptee will not question their roots and long to learn about their heritage, but it will not determine the person they become.  Researchers have been finding that environment can influence behavior and genetic design.  Interactions between parenting and nonfamilial influences play a larger role than previously assumed.  I do believe Lori is being a bit bias in this post because she is an advocate for open adoption, she has had positive experiences within her children’s triads and they have been successful at making it work.  However, this is not the case for everyone.  The purpose for this blog post is for Lori to answer her readers’ and give her opinion, as an advocate and published author, her opinion is respected and held in high regard by her readers.  I do believe that the readership could have been swayed depending on their previous knowledge or experience on nature vs. nurture because Lori gives a strong and fair argument.  Sociologically speaking, I would give this post a 9/10 on the trustworthy scale, because of Lori’s bias on the subject and her personal desire for nature and nurture to each be just as important as the other.  I would suggest this post and her other posts to people looking for information from an adoptive parent’s perspective.  Though this post has some bias in it, it still gives a good argument.  Some of her other posts talk about situations that have risen raising her children, her son asking why his mother gave him away was an exceptionally great set of posts that can help other adoptive parents when faced with these kinds of moments.
