Which Wood is it: Mahogany
Mahogany:
Mahogany wood is in high demand for its beautiful appearance, stability, and workability. Magically, mahogany wands are quick and easy casters. They favor bold and lively masters who tend to have big hearts. Mahogany wands readily adapt to any magical discipline, and have acquired as reputation a generalist wand.
But what exactly is mahogany? There are a great many woods with mahogany in their common name, but not all of these “mahoganies” have all (or any) of mahogany’s desirable characteristics. Cuban Mahogany, Honduran Mahogany, and Mexican Mahogany are universally accepted as “genuine” mahoganies: all three belong to the Swietenia genus. These species produce the best wood, have the greatest workability, and the most magically versatile wands. Of the three, Cuban and Honduran are considered the most desirable: the large trees produce knot and defect free wood. Unfortunately, it has become harder to obtain them. Both Magical and Muggle Cuba banned the export of Cuban mahogany in the 1940’s. Honduran (also known as Bigleaf or Brazilian) Mahogany is controlled under CITES. While magical groves still exist, CITES restrictions means it is harder to and more expensive to smuggle Honduran Mahogany past Muggle authorities. Mexican Mahogany trees tended to be smaller than their sister species, and tend to have more knots and defects, but wand quality pieces can still be found.
Next on the mahogany list is African Mahogany. This wood comes from various species in the Khaya genus. African Mahogany is visually very similar to Swietenia species, but the grain is more interlocked and it is slightly harder to work with. Magically, African Mahogany is “wilder”, a hair stronger, and not as smooth a caster as genuine mahogany. Purists, both among muggle woodworkers and wandmakers, do not consider African Mahogany to be in the same league as genuine mahogany, but African Mahogany is generally considered a mahogany and a good substitute for genuine mahogany. Outside of these two groups, woods termed “mahogany” are really not mahogany. Some woods, like Sapele, are distantly related to mahogany while others, like Mountain Mahogany, were named based on a passing visual similarity.
