Dogs felt so fucking prime on our run today! Running on Friday def made Slash more level headed this run, he was much more focused. One problem that I’m dealing with with him is that he absolutely HATES having to turn around (this is a common problem amongst sled dogs, when you have an out and back trail they understand they are going home and the run is ending when you turn around which is why the best trails are loops). Always something to work on!

“C’mon boy! C’mon boy!” You coo at your dog as he brought a stick big enough to fit in his mouth.
“Who’s a good boy?” You cooed, “Oh who’s the best boy? Oh yes you are! It’s you!” You say as you crouch down to him.
“Thank you for the stick. We’ve got to find more if we want to keep warm tonight. No one thinks that there’ll be a storm but I do.” You say as if the dog can hear you.
“See those clouds up there by the mountains?” You ask and point as your dog distractedly played with the snow-digging it’s face in it, “Well Akita,” their attention snaps up at you as soon as you mention their name, “You see those clouds by the mountain? Yep, those. That means there’ll be a blizzard by tonight. If not, tomorrow. A man told me how to navigate the weather around the area a few days before I found you- you know?”
“We’ve gotta’ get these sticks back to the sled if we want to-“ as you’re talking, you pause to hear Akita lowly growl as if they found something.
“Hey...what is it, boy?”
The dog continues to growl for a few more seconds before it shakes its head while looking down. He looks back up at you with urgency before barking and running off.
“Hey wait!” you call but he’s already running off enough for you to catch up. He stops some meters off and waits for you until you catch up.
“Hey honestly, you never do this so this better be good. What did you find?” You ask as you get to the dog and he’s already pointing with it’s nose to a bush.
Around that area, you could already see a pile of snow surrounding the area. Some snow covered trees were no longer covered with snow since it was now on the floor and you assumed that maybe something had fallen.
To your absolute surprise, you immediately catch onto what Akita had been trying to tell you all along.
A man had fallen from the sky.
You assume that he had fallen from a nearby train or a plane but a train was more likely. One soldier had told you (before setting up a few days ago) that settling not so close and not so far from the tracks was advisable at this point in the war and he seemed to be right.
“Dear heavens,” you say under your breath, “we have to help him Akita. C’mon now, quick!”
A dark blue coat had decorated his upper body-along with some buttons and a belt around his waist. Dark boots rested on his feet and you could see that his books had a small layer of ice on them. The snow around him was fresh and most of all, his wound on his left arm was fresh; just by a couple of minutes. You were thankful to have found him thanks to Akita and you fought some tears. How could people be living like this?
“No, there’s no time to think on that,” you mutter as you take out a bandage from your coat and begin to tie the fabric tightly around the man’s shoulder. His lips looked stone cold and his coal black eyelashes seemed to almost frost. He’s going to die of Hyperthermia if you don’t get him out as soon as possible.
It takes all the strength in you to carry him without damaging his arm.
“C’mon soldier,” you say heaving. “Let’s go,”
You don’t know how long your trip is but before you reached your sled, you’re dragging the man as best you can until you reach the sled that happens to be around 300 meters away from you. 300 meters, that’s all, you think. I can do this.
As you’re nearing the sled, Akita is just behind you-pushing the man by the back of his boots with Akita’s nose/head.
“We’re almost there!” you shout at Akita who notices and runs to the pack of 6 Siberian Huskies alerting them of your presence and that they need to leave, now.
You already feel some soreness from within you. It’s cold, you’re out of breath, you’re thirsty, and you want to go home but none of those things are going to help you or the man settled in between your arms.
Your mother would have thrown a fit if she saw you like this; a man’s side is against your body and his face is nuzzled inside your jacket close to your breast. It’s body heat, you think. If you can keep his face away from the cruel European wind, then maybe you have a few more minutes.
Your loyal dog is right there too. While you’re settling the man’s head in your chest, Akita quickly sits on his legs and starts to lick his cold hands. You smile at little creature, “Smart dog,” you say as your heart warms with pride.
As soon as you’re settled-which is in under a minute- you waste no time and the sled is running.
He needs water. God, how could I forget? You think to yourself as you pull out your bottle. Luckily the water was still warm.
“You need some water,” you speak out, “Sorry it’s cold out here but we’ll get you to somewhere warm, okay?” you say as you pour the water on a small cup; the sled still moving fast. “We have to raise your internal temperature,” you explain, “Wouldn’t like you getting hyperthermia if you know what I mean,” you say as you press the cup to his bright pink lips. You wonder if they’re just naturally like this or if it’s just the cold.
Placing the cup to his lips, he doesn’t swallow the water and it spills. You sigh and opt for forcing it down his throat; knowing it’s going to hurt him you sigh.
“This is going to hurt. Maybe afterwards but I’m sorry.” you say apologetically before opening his lips and forcing the liquid down his throat. He throws a fit of coughs and you’re thankful that at least he’s reacting. You rub his back in hopes of it helping.
“Darn it,” you mutter under your breath, “Your hands,” you say before looking over to Akita who is still treating his hands.
“That’s enough Akita,” you nod before taking off your own gloves. “We’re almost there and you need as much coverage as possible,”
You reach out for his hands- they’re cold as ice but Akita’s licking did make a noticeable change in his temperature. His hands were pale, yet they were somewhat muscular. He’s not a common soldier, you thought. Maybe he was an advisor or a military commander. You wrapped your bare hands in his and rubbed his palms and fingers before you put your mittens in his. They thankfully fit in his hands; a little tight, but well fitted.
Focusing your attention on the sled, you grabbed your handles and drove faster. “C’mon!” you say through the harsh wind-some hair hitting your face, “We have to make it!”
Your arrival caused quite the scene for every soldier present. Many of them thought there was a foreign attack but your voice immediately dismissed that thought.
“No don’t! It’s Prim! I have a man down and I need him taken to the infirmary immediately!” You say as a soldier helps you down.
“William, make sure they take him to the infirmary and call Mary Jane. Tell her it’s urgent and to prepare the Anesthesia,” you say as all the soldiers look at your sudden dominant state.
“Good boy, Akita.” you say as a pair of strong soldiers grab the unconscious man.
“Be careful with him!” you warned, “I don’t want him to lose an arm! And neither would you” you say the last part feeling like old commander Smith. I sound just like him, you think in a tone that you can’t tell if it’s a good thing or a bad thing.
“Come on boys!” you say as you’re running ahead of them and enter the room to see William talking to Mary Jane.
“Put him on the bed,” you instruct as you’re already taking off your coat and start prepping. You thank them and quickly dismiss them.
Mary Jane gives you a look, her wrinkles on her forehead visible, “What did you do now Rose?” she asks.
“Nothing!” you say defensively, “Akita and I found him out in the snow and a bush saved his fall. I just hope we can save him. I’ll tell you the details later but do you have the Anesthesia ready?” you ask her before she nods.
“Yes. Now what are you going to do?” she asks.
You rub your hands together, some nervousness crawling inside of you.
“I’m going to save his life, MJ. I’ve seen Doctor Hans do this and I’m sure I can too.” you say as you put on your gloves after thoroughly washing your hands.
“God be with you, child.” she says as her glasses glisten under the light.
You nod and exhale, “God be with all of us, MJ. Especially with him.” you say as you pause.
“Now,” you extend your hand, “Scalpel please,”
A/N: OH MY GOSH I WAS TOTALLY LISTENING TO SOME GREYS ANATOMY SONGS AND WATCHING SOME EPISODES WHILE WRITING THIS SO SORRY IF THE LAST PART SOUNDS TOO MUCH LIKE IT BUT I FELT LIKE IT WAS NECESSARY TO ADD THIS LITTLE ‘DRAMATIC’ MOVE, YOU KNOW?
