Unveiling Gary: The Master Smith of "He Who Fights with Monsters"
Gary, known formally as Gareth Xandier, is a character that stands out in the captivating world of "He Who Fights with Monsters." His unique blend of skills, abilities, and powers make him a character worth exploring. In this post, we delve into the essence of what makes Gary a formidable ally and a master of his craft.
The Essence of Gary's Power
Gary's attributes are a testament to his strength and skill. As a Leonid, he possesses the innate power of the Fire essence, complemented by the Hammer, Iron, and Forge essences¹. These essences bond to the four main stats of Recovery, Spirit, Power, and Speed, each enhancing Gary's capabilities in their unique way².
💪 Strength and Meta-Weight
The Power attribute includes strength and meta-weight, allowing Gary to exhibit formidable strength and stability. The higher the power attribute, the more strength Gary displays, and the less he is affected by the forces exerted by others of the same or lower ranks².
🦵Flexibility and Dexterous Movement
The Speed attribute encompasses flexibility and dexterity, along with sheer speed. At the cusp of Iron and early Bronze rank, this attribute allows Gary to perform feats akin to an Olympic gymnast while sprinting, making him an agile and swift movement coach².
🧠 Mental Fortitude and Essence Control
The **Spirit attribute** reflects Gary's ability to handle various stimuli and the strength of his essence abilities. A higher Spirit attribute means enhanced senses and mental aspects, crucial for a smith of Gary's caliber².
🏃‍♂️Stamina and Recovery
Lastly, the **Recovery attribute** is indicative of how quickly Gary can replenish his mana, stamina, and health, playing a role in the duration of afflictions he can withstand².
Crafting and Smithing: Gary's Signature Skills
Gary's reputation as a smith is well-earned. He crafted the formidable sword **Dread Salvation** for Jason, and when he reforged it into **Hegemon's Will**, he achieved even greater heights with the assistance of Virid Martine¹. His skills in crafting are not just about creating weapons but also imbuing them with powerful essences that enhance their capabilities.
A Harsh Taskmaster with a Heart
While Gary's personality is easygoing outside of training, he transforms into a harsh taskmaster during sessions. His dedication to excellence is evident in his rigorous training methods, ensuring that those he coaches, like Jason, reach their full potential.
Conclusion
Gary's multifaceted abilities make him a character of depth and intrigue in "He Who Fights with Monsters." His stats, powers, and skills are a blend of raw strength, agility, mental acuity, and unmatched craftsmanship. As we continue to explore the rich tapestry of characters in this series, Gary stands as a testament to the complex and engaging world crafted by the author.

Unveiling the Power of LESS: 3-Day training with Bas Vodde and former teammates in Bangkok
Tumblr media Tumblr media
End of May 2024, I flew in from Saigon to Bangkok for a 3-day intensive training on the LESS Agile Framework, led by none other than Bas Vodde, the creator of LESS himself! The journey offered a chance to rediscover the legendary Thailand traffic jams – a (slightly hair-raising) tuktuk ride providing a nostalgic reminder. More importantly, it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with my former teammates, as we'd planned to attend the training together for a while already.
Tumblr media
The hustle and bustle of Bangkok recently served as the backdrop for a smooth learning experience!
For those unfamiliar, LESS (Large Scale Scrum) is a powerful scaling framework designed to empower multiple teams working on a single product to deliver value iteratively and collaboratively. Here's where LESS shines: it tackles complex projects by advocating for a broader product definition. Unlike traditional, single-team Scrum, LESS encourages defining the product in a more holistic way. This considers not just the immediate features, but also the overall vision, user needs, and potential future iterations. This broader definition empowers teams to see the bigger picture and prioritize work accordingly.
But a broader product definition requires a special kind of team. LESS thrives with its focus on highly collaborative, cross-functional teams. Bas Vodde emphasized that these teams need to be 100% dedicated to the Scrum process for the duration of the sprint. More importantly, team members need to embrace a learning mindset and be willing to step outside their original roles. Delivering a complex product in LESS requires everyone to contribute beyond their siloed expertise. Team members might need to learn new skills, participate in activities outside their comfort zone, and ultimately, become well-rounded contributors to the entire product development process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having the privilege of learning directly from Bas Vodde, the architect of LESS, provided invaluable insights into these core principles. The training equipped me with the tools and knowledge to confidently navigate complex projects with a broader product definition and foster a collaborative environment where cross-functional teams can thrive. This Bangkok adventure, filled with learning and reconnection, was a truly rewarding experience.

Leading Agile Transformation through Emotional Intelligence:
In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, achieving agility is a top priority for organizations aiming to stay competitive. While technical skills and processes are crucial, emotional intelligence (EQ) has emerged as a powerful catalyst for accelerating agile product delivery and leading agile transformation. In this article, we will explore how investing in emotional intelligence can drive business agility, provide examples of its impact on agile product delivery, and demonstrate its transformative potential for leading agile transformations. Additionally, we will discuss the consequences of lacking emotional intelligence and identify who can benefit from developing this essential skill in the context of agile practices. To embark on your journey, here are some recommended resources for developing emotional intelligence within an agile business context:
"Emotional Intelligence for Agile Teams" by Crystal Kadakia
"Agile Emotional Intelligence: The Key to Unlocking Your Team's Potential" by Jaime Levy
"The Agile Leader: Leveraging the Power of Emotional Intelligence" by Zapata, Bergman, and Dezcalzi.
"Emotional Intelligence for the Project Manager: The People Skills You Need to Achieve Outstanding Results" by Anthony Mersino
"Agile Leadership Toolkit: Learning to Thrive with Self-Management and Emotional Intelligence" by Peter Koning
"The Agile Developer's Handbook: Get More Value from Agile Software Development Projects with Emotional Intelligence" by Shimi Zhang
Why should you invest in Emotional Intelligence?
Collaborative and High-Performing Teams:
Emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of building collaborative and high-performing teams. By investing in emotional intelligence, individuals can foster trust, promote open communication, and effectively manage conflicts within agile teams. Emotionally intelligent team members understand the importance of empathy and active listening, which enables them to create a supportive environment conducive to innovation, continuous learning, and rapid product delivery.
Example: An agile development team with high emotional intelligence understands the diverse perspectives and emotions of its members. They proactively address conflicts, encourage open dialogue, and leverage emotional awareness to adapt and respond quickly to changes in project requirements. As a result, they achieve higher productivity, better decision-making, and ultimately, faster time-to-market.
Adaptive Leadership:
Developing emotional intelligence empowers agile leaders to navigate complex and uncertain business landscapes with agility. Emotionally intelligent leaders understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions and motivations of their team members. This understanding enables them to make informed decisions, inspire and motivate their teams, and create a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
Example: An agile leader with strong emotional intelligence promotes psychological safety within the team, encouraging individuals to experiment, take calculated risks, and learn from failures. They demonstrate empathy, actively seek input from team members, and adjust their leadership style to suit different personalities and situations. This leadership approach fosters a culture of trust, innovation, and adaptability, leading to successful agile transformations.
Customer-Centricity and Product Excellence:
Emotional intelligence plays a vital role in delivering customer-centric products of high quality. By cultivating emotional intelligence, agile teams develop a deep understanding of customer needs, pain points, and aspirations. This empathy-driven approach enables them to create intuitive user experiences, iterate quickly based on customer feedback, and continuously deliver value to customers.
Example: An agile product team with strong emotional intelligence proactively engages with customers, seeking feedback and involving them in the development process. They possess the empathy to understand customer emotions and motivations, allowing them to prioritize features that resonate with customers on an emotional level. As a result, they develop products that exceed customer expectations, generate customer loyalty, and drive business growth.
Disadvantages of Lacking Emotional Intelligence:
Poor Communication and Team Dysfunction:
A lack of emotional intelligence within agile teams can result in communication breakdowns, misunderstandings, and diminished trust. The inability to understand and regulate emotions may result in unresolved conflicts, damaged trust, decreased collaboration and impaired team performance.
Ineffective Conflict Resolution:
Individuals lacking emotional intelligence are being challenged when to navigating conflicts constructively in agile setting. They may react impulsively, escalate conflicts, or avoid addressing issues altogether, which can lead to team dysfunction.
Difficulty with Stress Management:
Without emotional intelligence, stress management becomes challenging. Individuals may experience heightened anxiety, struggle to cope with pressure, and have difficulty maintaining a work-life balance.
Limited Leadership Effectiveness:
Leaders who lack emotional intelligence may struggle to inspire and motivate their teams. Their inability to understand and connect with their team members' emotions can lead to decreased engagement, reduced productivity, and higher turnover rates.
Who Can Benefit from Developing Emotional Intelligence in an Agile Context?
Developing emotional intelligence is valuable for individuals across various roles, particularly in agile environments. Whether you are a team member, scrum master, product owner, or leader, investing in emotional intelligence can greatly enhance your agility and contribute to overall success.

Scrum Master's Secret Weapon: Enhance Leadership with Jira Assistance
Tumblr media
In Agile project management, the Scrum Master plays a pivotal role. They are the leaders who guide teams toward success, ensuring that Agile principles and practices are followed effectively. While the Scrum Master's responsibilities are diverse and demanding, one tool stands out as their secret weapon: Jira. This blog will explore how Jira can enhance a Scrum Master assistant capabilities and contribute to Agile project success.
The Scrum Master's Crucial Role
Before diving into the power of Jira, let's briefly revisit the role of a Scrum Master. Scrum Masters are not traditional project managers; they are servant leaders who facilitate and empower their teams. Their responsibilities include:
Facilitating Scrum Events: Scrum Masters organise and lead key events like Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Sprint Reviews, and Sprint Retrospectives. These events keep the team focused, aligned, and continuously improving.
Removing Obstacles: Scrum Masters identify and eliminate impediments that hinder the team's progress. This can range from resolving technical issues to addressing interpersonal conflicts.
Coaching and Mentoring: Scrum Masters coach team members and stakeholders on Agile principles and practices, helping them understand and embrace the Agile mindset.
Shielding the Team: They protect the team from external disruptions and excessive demands, allowing team members to focus on their work.
Continuous Improvement: Scrum Masters facilitate retrospectives to help the team reflect on their processes and find ways to improve continuously.
Jira as a Scrum Master's Ally
Now, let's explore how Jira can assist Scrum Masters in their leadership journey:
Efficient Backlog Management: Jira provides a centralised platform for managing the product backlog. Scrum Masters can use Jira to keep the backlog organised, ensure that it reflects the priorities of the Product Owner, and make it easily accessible to the team. This clarity enhances the Scrum Master's ability to facilitate Sprint Planning effectively.
Visibility into Progress: Jira's visual boards, such as Kanban or Scrum boards, offer real-time visibility into the progress of tasks during a sprint. Scrum Masters can use these boards during Daily Standups to help the team stay on track and identify any blockers or delays.
Dependency Tracking: Managing dependencies between tasks can be challenging but is crucial for successful Agile delivery. Jira allows Scrum Masters to map dependencies, enabling them to address potential roadblocks and ensure smooth progress proactively.
Custom Reporting: Jira offers robust reporting capabilities. Scrum Masters can use these reports to track key metrics like velocity, burn down, and sprint progress. These insights facilitate data-driven discussions during Sprint Reviews and Retrospectives, enabling the team to identify areas for improvement.
Automated Reminders: Jira can be configured to send automated reminders and notifications for upcoming events and deadlines. Scrum Masters can use this feature to ensure that the team is aware of and prepared for important Scrum events.
Issue Tracking and Escalation: When issues or impediments arise, Scrum Masters can use Jira to log and track them. Jira's customise workflows allow for creating issue escalation processes, ensuring that problems are addressed promptly.
Collaboration and Documentation: Jira integrates seamlessly with Confluence, Atlassian's collaboration platform. Scrum Masters can use Confluence to document meeting notes, action items, and project documentation. This integration streamlines knowledge-sharing and documentation efforts.
Best Practices for Scrum Masters Using Jira
To maximise the benefits of Jira as a Scrum Master's secret weapon, consider the following best practices:
Master Jira: Invest time in becoming proficient with Jira's features and functionalities. The more you know, the more effectively you can leverage it to support your team.
Customisation: Tailor Jira to fit your team's unique needs. Customise workflows, issue types, and boards to align with your Agile processes.
Training and Support: Provide training and support to your team members to ensure they can navigate and use Jira effectively. A well-informed team is more likely to collaborate efficiently within the tool.
Regular Reviews: Continuously review and adapt your Jira setup to reflect changes in your project's needs. Regularly solicit feedback from your team to identify opportunities for improvement.
Documentation: Use Confluence with Jira to maintain clear and up-to-date documentation. This ensures that critical information and decisions are readily accessible to all stakeholders.
The Scrum Master's Secret to Success
In today's fast-paced business environment, Agile project management is necessary for organisations seeking to deliver value rapidly and respond to change effectively. Within the Agile framework, the Scrum Master plays a pivotal role as a servant-leader, guiding teams toward success. With its powerful features for backlog management, progress tracking, dependency management, and reporting, Jira can serve as the Scrum Master's secret weapon.
By mastering Jira and leveraging its capabilities, Scrum Masters can enhance their leadership skills, streamline Agile processes, and drive project success. Jira becomes a tool and an extension of the Scrum Master's expertise, enabling them to excel in their role and lead their teams to Agile excellence.
At Quirk Consulting, we understand the importance of Agile leadership and the role of tools like Jira in enhancing the Scrum Master's effectiveness. Building, designing, refining and training the Agile delivery framework of the Bank!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the end of December 2023, I am rewarded and listed among the few Agilists whom delivered more than a dozen of the immersive 1 day Agile foundational training within a year.
Actually it has been 3 years that the Agile center of excellence has been building, experimenting, improving, updating and eventually released the official Techcombank Agile way of working: the Techcomway. One thing which particularly helps while delivering the trainings or implementing the new way of working with new teams, is the deep and strong connection between the Agile Manifesto and the Techcombank’s core values :
Customer Centricity
Innovation and creativeness
Collaboration for common objectives
Self-development
Work efficiency
Leveraging on core the values of the bank is a really strong message to each Techcomer in my opinion. This is re-enforcing the importance of the transformation teams by continuously reminding the need to embrace the bank's beliefs.
I need to precise that the adoption of Agile frameworks (during execution) has been officially embedded as a part of the Project life cycle of the bank since early 2021 already, under the initiative of our previous Head of Transformation Timothy Kyle; which was a significant step! It has drastically evolved since then.
Today, the result is a solid way of working based on Scrum framework, using at scale components (Chapters, Scrum of Scrums, Joint events, Community of Practices…) which helps to drive the delivery and reach the expected business outcomes. The journey wasn’t easy at all to be honest, however it is now being recognized and endorsed by each foundational part of the bank as an absolutely enabler when it comes to implementation. Also meaning we have yet tackled Agile for discovery phase of a new business case, this should probably be the next big thing to tackle…
As a part of the Strategy & Transformation division, the dedicated Agile workforce have collaborated closely with Retail Detail Bank (+Digital Office & Marketing initiative), DNA (Data), IT (including Cloud Migration initiative), Business Banking... Each of them have embraced the Agile way of working, under Project Management Office and Agile Center of Excellence strong guidance. Since early 2022 our agile playbook is mandatory framework measured by clear KPI when it comes to delivering a large initiative (successfully!!). Here are the major topics it is dealing with:
Agile Mindset
Agile Manifesto
Techcombank core value & Agile
People & Structure
Roadmap & Releases
Scrum & Kanban Framework
Backlog Structure & Workflow
Toolings & Practices
Performance measurement
By the end of 2023, a Kanban based version has also been developed for specific initiatives, equipping Business As Usual teams with proper agile mindset and tools. We already leveraging on this and propagate the usage of it as we have we started the Agile Journey with several business department with no technology component involved: the technology part are just enablers to reach the outcome expected.
Longtime due, but for now we are focusing on building a deeper and more targeted training: a 3 days course, including, 1 full day Agile fundamental, 1 full day of simulation activities for Scrum and / or for Kanban; 1 day of “hands on” sessions with the internal tools and practices - absolutely needed for the current & future scrum masters. The main intent is to equip carefully selected candidates with new skills (which are not in their initial set of skills and experience).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although it is collective effort, I am in charge of the design of the Scrum simulation, designing the serious games, the scenarios, the way to facilitate and enable the learning. For this exercise I need to collaborate with the pillars of our team :
Jatinder Datt (Director, Agile Transformation)
Andre Nguyen (Director, Agile Transformation)
Quang Ba (Agile Coach)
Nguyen Duc Hieu (Agile Coach)
Duong (Agile Academy)
It is obviously supervised by the head of Agile and I mostly need to absorb my colleagues feedback as much as I need to get their help: they will be running the 3 days sessions by their own, hence we definitely need to engineer this together!! A beautiful example of teamwork for a common objective! Can't wait to run it!
Note that this 3 days course is not an isolated training to equip seasonal scrum masters: these 3 days are just 1 component of the upskills program for existing teams member willing and qualified to become future scrum master, but let’s talk about this in another article!
Stay tuned, thanks for reading.
