etymology o1: agnus jactura

It goes without argument that my username is just a tad from the norm, especially for roleplaying a character that has no affiliation with anything Latin at all. However, being a fan of symbolism and biblical references, the username was one I just simply couldn't do without, and before long, you'll realize why.

Let's begin with just a miniature history lesson. As most of you know, Latin is the language that is most recognized with being the language of the Holy Roman Empire, and above all, the Catholic church. That being the case, it comes as no surprise that that agnus jactura is just an allusion to one huge biblical reference:

Agnus Dei; The Lamb of God

Agnus Dei is a line from the Gospel of John, wherein John the Baptist is reputed for saying "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." While this alone might have been suitable enough as a username, it might have come off as too Catholic, and I felt that Agnus Dei alone undermined the message I was trying to portray. So with a little help, I decided to opt "Dei" (of God) for "Jactura" (Sacrifice or Loss--however you wish to read it.)

Combined, that gives us Agnus Jactura--the Lamb of Sacrifice.

Now the question is why?

Well, as we see in several of Ib's endings, Garry sacrifices himself for the sake of saving his beloved Ib. That alone may be a suitable enough answer, but it disregards the biblical reference entirely. So here's my interpretation:

Garry is what one might call the 'lamb' archetype  Because of someone else's maliciousness and wrong-doings (sins), Garry is sacrificed to save another--much like in the bible, where a lamb was sacrificed for the spiritual cleansing and eternal salvation for those that it was sacrificed for. While in the Old Testament the sacrifice was forced and overall considerably negative, if you stick with the contemporary perspective you see in a religious world today, Garry's sacrifice for Ib was synonymous with Jesus's self-sacrifice for his followers, which also goes to insinuate that Garry is not truly dead even after Mary killed him if you wish to look that far into it.

tl;dr: "Behold the Lamb of God (Garry) who takes away the sin (Mary's maliciousness) of the world"

No, I'm not calling Garry Jesus. Again, I just like biblical references.

You find yourself just staring at his figure for the longest time. That expression of complete shock plastered all over your face. Last you saw him he was practically dead...or as the painting you saw of him, asleep. But...you couldn't believe what you were seeing right now. Could it....could it really be him? Eyes beading with bits of tears do you stagger forward, a hand out  as your fingertips gently brush against the side of his ragged coat. It's soft material feeling exactly how it did the night he wrapped you in it when you were having your nightmare. And then... apart of you truly knew that it was him.  You have no idea how...but it was him.

"G...."

You can hardly sputter out a word. Your eyes were filling to the brim with tears as you just threw yourself out at the taller male. Arms tightly wrapping around him, never wanting to let go.

"GARRY....!"

The Doppelganger. An alter-ego, said to be a paranormal manifestation of someone, with no biological relation. When seen by friends or relatives, the doppelganger brings misfortune. But if one were to encounter their own doppelganger, then the presence of death is looming in secrecy. The post-winter weather still brought an icy chill, especially on a windy day like this one. It was the heavy breezes that made Garry curse the fact that he didn't have any gloves to shield his hands. Of course, he could have just gone inside, but he preferred to watch through the windows from the outside patio of the coffee shop. Plus, despite how unsanitary it was, he couldn't resist the half-smoked cigarettes he pilfered from the ashtrays that sat on the tables. Unfathomable was the desire, yet wastefulness of humans. Garry dismissed his mental discussion regarding the flaws of humans, and instead showed his thanks with an exhale of smoke. One man's trash is another man's lung cancer. The newspaper sitting on the table became an improvised shield to cover his face as he saw the semi-obscured figure of someone walk into the cafe through the tinted windows. Garry narrowed his vision, peeking over the top of the paper, and once it was determined that it wasn't who he was expecting, the lavender-haired man took this moment to steal another drag from his cigarette. He grimaced at the taste, as it wasn't the bitter taste he was used to--being pre-smoked probably didn't help either--but his nicotine craving allowed him to overcome the disgust. Impatiently, he stole another glance over the newspaper, as he faintly heard the door bell ring around the corner of the cafe. Garry slowly drifted the newspaper to his lap, smoke seeping through his nostrils as his cobalt eyes studied the guest. It was him. Stormy grey eyes observed with a patience that began to waver. The mirror image of himself stepped toward the counter, greeting the cashier with a smile, proceeding with his order--macarons, of course, maybe even a cup of coffee or tea? When the man beyond the window finally paid for his sweets, he took a seat with his back facing the doppelganger. A smirk spread across Garry's face as he smoked the remainder of his cigarette to the edge of the filter and flicked it to the ground unceremoniously. The false manifestation smoothed out his jacket before entering through the side door to the cafe. Silently, he made his way to the other, ignoring the almost horrified look of the lady behind the counter. His twin--for lack of a better word--remained blissfully unaware as he chomped down on his macarons, his pack of cigarettes off tot he side. Garry became aware that as he drew close, the lighting produced a soft shadow, and he could see his look-a-like seemingly tense up. Before he could turn around, the doppelganger reached over his twin's shoulder, swiping the cigarettes from the table, swiftly withdrawing one and slipping it between his lips. His copy spun around in frustration, but didn't get a chance to protest. Garry used the startled expression and silence to light up a fresh cigarette. He even had time to steal another from the pack and slip it behind his ear for later. The cigarette literally had its life sucked away in one greedy inhale, one that put a smile to Garry's face as he relished the bitter flavor. It was sickly-sweet, unlike the cheap, tastelessness of the ones he had been living off of for a while. "I'm so glad you still buy the same cigarettes." The pack of cigarettes was thrown back to their spot on the table, and Garry's eyes never left his double's. Crossing his arms, he vehemently awaited for a reaction.

【 Assassin!AU; Ring Hierarchy And Notable Member Information 】

The Assassin Ring is divided into three spheres: First Sphere, Second Sphere, and Third Sphere.

First Sphere 

The first sphere consists of the Ring's bloodline. While they can be assigned other duties, such as being an assassin or an intel specialist, they will always be considered members of the First Sphere. First Sphere obligations, such as upholding associations with other rings and accepting charge over other departments of the ring, hold priority over any other duties they may have.

Notable Members:

Guertena: Guertena is the leader of the Assassin Ring by familial right. He overlooks the Ring as a whole, secures relations with other Rings, and ensures the continuity of the Ring. He also gives the final say on whether a person is knighted into being an assassin in his ring.  

Mary: Mary is the daughter of Guertena. She is in charge of accepting cases, sending out the Intel Corp to gather information on said cases, and assigns assassins depending on the difficulty and requirements of the case.

Second Sphere

The second sphere consists solely of Assassin Specialists. The assassins, after receiving the intel on their assigned case, gather further information if needed (sometimes having to create relationships with their targets) and then proceed with planning and commencing the assassination process. Often, assassins are paired as means to prevent mishap.

Notable Members: 

Abel (Garry): Abel is the, alongside his twin brother, highest ranked assassin in the Second Sphere. Given their success and skill, the two are only given the most difficult and the most high-risk targets. Abel's specialization lies with sniping, handgun use, and--when the situation calls for it--forming relationships with his targets.  

Cain (FakeGarry): Cain shares the same position as his twin brother in the Sphere. He specializes in close-range combat (ex. hand-to-hand, knife/dagger use) as well as poisoning techniques and other meticulous methods of assassination.

Third Sphere

The Third Sphere consists of the Intel Corp, Weapons Specialists, Security, and other occupations of which are essential to the Ring's function. Intel Corp gathers information on assigned cases through an array of ways while Weapon Specialists attend to the assassins' weapons repair and supply. Security does as their title implies--they keep the Ring Headquarters secure and assure that the Ring remains incognito from society's eyes. There are other jobs that are upheld in his sphere, but are generally held by a few people and are incredibly specific.

Notable Memebers: 

Ladies of Color: These women make up the majority of the Intel Corp and are the best at gathering the information needed for cases.
