Evaporation of Refrigerant:
Air chillers use a refrigeration cycle to remove heat from the liquid. The process begins with the evaporation of a refrigerant inside the evaporator coil. The refrigerant is a substance with a low boiling point, allowing it to absorb heat from the water or glycol mixture circulating through the coil.
Compressor:
The low-pressure vaporized refrigerant is then drawn into a compressor. The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant, turning it into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas.
Condensation:
The hot, pressurized gas then flows to the condenser coil, which is located in the chiller unit’s air-cooled section. In the condenser, the refrigerant releases heat to the surrounding air, causing it to condense into a high-pressure liquid.
Expansion Valve:
The high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, where it undergoes a sudden drop in pressure. This results in a portion of the liquid evaporating, causing the remaining liquid to become a low-pressure, low-temperature mixture.
Evaporator:
The low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant is then circulated through the evaporator coil, where it absorbs heat from the water or glycol mixture. This absorption of heat causes the refrigerant to evaporate again, restarting the cycle.
Air Cooled Condenser:
The heat absorbed by the refrigerant in the evaporator is expelled to the surrounding air in the air-cooled condenser. This is achieved through a fan that blows air over the condenser coil, dissipating the heat into the atmosphere.
Circulation System:
A pump circulates the water or glycol mixture from the process through the evaporator coil, where it is cooled by the refrigerant, and then returns it to the process to absorb more heat.
By repeating this cycle, air chillers efficiently remove heat from the process fluid, maintaining the desired temperature. The effectiveness of air chillers is dependent on factors such as ambient air temperature and the chiller’s design and capacity.
