The ghost town vanishing in a forest. Reclaimed by nature and animals. Villages such as Dzhantukha, Akarmara, Pyataya Shakhta, Polyana and Kharchilava are located in Abkhazia’s coal basin.

Dzhantukha is the most populous of the ‘ghost towns’ — it has about fifty inhabitants. There are around 38 living in Akarmara, with similar numbers in the other villages.

The khrushchyovkas with a family or two living inside are marked out by laundry drying on their balconies. Every family also does its own subsidiary farming — they breed cattle, keep bees, and grow vegetables. Otherwise it’s hard to make ends meet.

Two young girls, aged seven, peek out from a window in one ruined house. They immediately hide upon noticing the camera in my hands.

‘Our mum forbade us to be photographed’, one of them says.

‘Why?’

‘She forbade it and that’s all’.

The girl whispers something to her friend and they abruptly run out of the ruined building and disappear.

To be completely honest with you,

I had never been as competent to run a list of places to visit in the future.

Though there are plenty that have imprinted themselves in my mind I anticipate visiting in near future.

Set up majorly for fun, unconsciously of what would become of it, the idea of visiting Canada was amplified to an actual goal.

Only hearing what I intentionally chose to hear about it I never did any thorough work or research on it, thus I suppose should add to the excitement when I finally get there. I have a certain picture of it and anticipate comparing it to what Canada has actually in stock for me.

Same goes for not much randomly as intuitively picked bunch of places like, Tschernobyl (probably because of its abandoned state), Georgia, Belgium, Baikal in winter, Korea, Lyon, rural villages of Italy (which ones exactly does not actually matter)

And then there’s this abandoned village Akarmara below Russia in a country of my mothers birth which sadly isn’t considered a country here in the west.
