What do you think is important when making an “ikemen”?

K-san: If you don’t think the characters are sexy yourself, then there’s only so far you can take them. ...For me, I research types of characters, realize what makes them cool, and think about what scenes would highlight their qualities. The fact is though, the more you love a character, or feel he’s sexy or cool, they become more polished.

When you rely solely on the research you did for a character, they lose their originality, so it’s important to really feel like the guy is sexy - that you could fall for him.

How do you take a bad boy, like Eisuke, and make him likable?

K-san: Well, if a nasty guy has a sweet side, he becomes more relatable. You make him have a sweet tooth, or make it so he loves animals but they can’t stand to be around him, for example. With Eisuke, he treats Baba, who is objectively the silliest one among them, with a great deal of respect just because he’s older. I thought that was such a clever choice.

Is there an ikemen trend that you’ve noticed? Or a trend in what women want?

K-san: ...As far as Voltage is concerned, a lot of our players have grown up a bit, so they’re starting to want more mature characters. ...Speaking more generally, though, I think that guys who don’t come on super strong or who aren’t super forward are more popular, at least in Japan. This is just my take on it, but girls want someone who won’t be constantly making advances on them; they want someone laid back, someone who has their own hobbies and interests.

I know we touched on this before, but what sort of character is the hardest for you to make?

K-san: The cold characters. It’s so hard for me. They always end up being, well, jerks. Iori and Momo are...not the nicest people ever. I feel like I don’t do well with those types of characters. (laughs).

Where do you get your inspiration for your stories and characters?

K-san: I’m the type to start with the story, and then build the character around that, not the other way around like other developers here. With Takashi, I wanted to make a genius who never knew love, and when he did find love, he’d become utterly helpless and spellbound. With Aki, I wanted to make a younger man who acted like someone much, much older.

I think the only time I ever started with a character and THEN made a story was with Kota. I knew I wanted to make a character like him, but it when it came to his story I was like “Hm, what do I do now...?” But that’s rare for me.

For MLFK, we had all the stories and themes already planned out, and then we built the characters around that. Ayato was always meant to be the “more than a friend, less than a boyfriend” guy. With Takamune, we knew going in we wanted a love triangle, so we made him based around that. The characters grew out of their stories.

M-san, who made Star-Crossed Myth and Butler Until Midnight, always does her characters first, stories second.

If you had to be the heroine in any one of our apps, which one would you choose?

K-san: I love younger men, so FILA. I don’t think I’d be cut out for the more fantastical settings... I’m more of a fan of the realistic settings. I would never want to be the heroine from Kissed by the Baddest Bidder. That girl’s got it tough. (laughs)

How do you make romantic lines?

K-san: I don’t know, actually... It just sort of comes to me while I’m creating the story. Of course, I make a note of good lines I find in books or manga or movies. ...When I’m coming up with a character’s lines, I think of the kind of personality I want to push and I let that guide me. For a haughty, confident man I make sure his lines are a little sexier. Things like that.

A lot of our overseas fans are aspiring writers. Do you have any advice you can give them?

K-san: I’m just a scenario director, so I don’t feel qualified to give advice, but... The best advice I can give, is to surround yourself with works that you love, like manga, or books, anything. When we hire someone new we always look at their writing ability, and it becomes immediately apparent if they’re well read or not. ...I think the more you read, the better a writer you become; there’s a direct correlation. Even people who have never made a story or plotted anything before, but have exposed themselves to a lot of media, will be able to become great storytellers in very little time. ...Consuming media is really the best thing an aspiring creator can do for themselves.
