There always seemed to be something magical about the name Berlinetta Lusso. It sounded like a name befitting the sleek, sexy Italian touring car that it was and every aspect of the Lusso was in perfect alignment with the whole of the car. The visual style of the car matched the performance dynamics which were a perfect fit with the extraordinary symphony of the legendary V12. The tactile pleasure to be had from the Nardi steering wheel and the glass gearshift knob with its finger notches accompanied by the scent of the leather interior made it clear that this Ferrari was conceived to please all of the senses. I would stop to admire a Berlinetta Lusso that was in the display window of Otto Zipper’s Ferrari showroom in Brentwood, California. It was burgundy with tan leather upholstery. I stood looking at it for what seemed like hours, going back again and again to admire its lines and study the nuances of its styling cues. Still not yet old enough to drive, I was convinced that I had discovered the perfect car, perhaps the perfect Ferrari, and I wanted a Lusso in a way that I could feel even if I couldn’t explain it in rational terms. As it turned out, I finally bought my Berlinetta Lusso. They weren’t easy to find and the one I chose was silver blue with what I would call French (Bugatti) blue leather upholstery and carpets. It was beautiful. In the year or so since I had first laid eyes on a Lusso, nothing I had seen since had convinced me that it was any less beautiful or exciting as when I first saw it. I had been inspired by the design and performance concept of this car and that was immutable.
