Reposted from @apa1906network [ALPHA MUSIC LEGENDS] In 2019, Brother Donny Hathaway became the first Alpha man to earn the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, he was named the 49th greatest singer of all time by the Rolling Stone magazine (@RollingStone.) Brother Hathaway was born on October 1, 1945 in Chicago, IL. He studied music at Howard University, where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by way of the Beta Chapter. Upon graduating in 1967, he launched his music career by becoming a "house producer" for Curtis Mayfield at Curtom Records in Chicago. In 1969, Brother Hathaway recorded his first single, "I Thank You, Baby,” and later signed to a deal with Atco Records - a division of Atlantic Records. He went on to release his debut album "Everything Is Everything," which included the R&B hit "The Ghetto.” By 1972, he released two more albums, including Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, which sold over 1 million copies and earned him a Grammy Award for "Where Is The Love.” After releasing his final studio album, Brother Hathaway teamed up with Roberta Flack to release "The Closer I Get to You," which reached #2 on the Hot 100 chart. In 2003, Brother Hathaway was inducted into St. Louis' Walk of Fame, where his legacy will never be forgotten.
