[ad_1] When I lived in Phoenix in the early 2000s, I was a one-issue voter — at least when it came to the politicians who routinely knocked on doors in our walkable historic district north of downtown.“Do you support light rail?” I asked about the proposed and badly needed transportation alternative. If the answer came back negative, the conversation was over.Light rail was built and thrived. Now in Seattle, I’m a multi-issue voter, especially when it comes to November’s City Council election. Seven of nine seats are open, including several for newcomers.Columnists don’t endorse candidates. That’s the prerogative of The Seattle Times editorial board. But we can ask questions, and I have plenty. For this space, I’ll focus on business and the economy. Are you an activist? Seattle’s politics have been dominated by activists on a timeline that coincides with the downward slope of good government. These are not people who believe in the late John Lewis’ “good trouble.” This hero of the civil rights movement paid in blood as an activist then worked constructively and effectively in his 33 years in Congress. Seattle City Council activists, especially Kshama Sawant, have sullied and trivialized the word at the same time. Most have little interest in effectively serving the needs of taxpaying, law-abiding citizens and are more in the theater of chanting crowds and waving signs. They proved themselves utterly incapable of dealing with the pandemic and crime-related damage inflicted on the city. The “homeless emergency” only became worse on their watch. The trouble is that the activists are well organized, and centrists aren’t. How will you change that? Seattle couldn’t even mount something as ambitious as the 1962 World’s Fair, nor would the City Council want to. That’s a sign of a deeper malaise.Have you ever run a business? Only Sara Nelson ticks off this box. Before her, someone who met a private payroll was Tim Burgess, who served from 2007 to 2017.This would be a broadening experience for several reasons, especially because attracting and retaining jobs and companies has been the primary goal of nearly every local politician I’ve ever covered in other cities.Seattle had the economic wind at its back for so long, politics didn’t seem to matter. Until they did. Then the council majority’s hostility to Amazon, the city’s largest private-sector employer, caused the company to seek a “full equal” HQ2. Some 240 localities offered hefty subsidies for a major taxpayer we got for free. We need a mayor and council with a constructive relationship with all Seattle businesses. Running or even working in the private sector shows what it’s like to deal with the government on the receiving end (or giving end, with taxes). Lost parking spaces can reduce customers, something an activist would never know. Business also exposes one to the costs of retail theft and the danger of violence by thieves being done all over the city. What’s your position on public safety? If you’re not supportive of Mayor Bruce Harrell’s emphasis on this issue, including getting tents off the street and clearing encampments, my door is closing.Readers tell me about being terrified to come downtown. Shop owners and employees talk of being attacked by thieves. The unsheltered are among the largest number of victims of these predators.A Pew Research Center poll in 2021 found that growing numbers of respondents nationally wanted more spending on police in their neighborhoods. At the same time, the beating death of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police officers shows the need for greater training and professionalizing of law enforcement. The huge sums of money spent on homelessness have been ineffective. What’s your plan to bring accountability to social service providers and bring help for those who need it, including those suffering from mental illness and addiction? What’s your Plan B if the King County Regional Homelessness Authority doesn’t get results? How about downtown? The
pandemic, protests and persistent crime deeply wounded the center city, the largest source of business taxes and, at least pre-pandemic, the largest employment hub of Seattle. It’s also home to some 90,000 people. Will you be willing to work with the Downtown Seattle Association to retain existing businesses and attract more? Will you vote to stop criminal activity so employees, customers and arts and sports enthusiasts feel safe? How about the First Avenue streetcar — we need it.And housing? “Affordable housing” is an imprecise term that might mean low-income housing, workforce housing or market-rate units. Seattle needs all three. Will you vote to speed the permitting process, especially on buildings that have been held up for years in some cases? And will you stop considering all landlords as “class enemies,” as Sawant might put it? In some cases, small landlords are being forced to sell their properties because of overregulation while still carrying the burden of mortgages. The result: Their buildings are sold and demolished for high-end houses, taking affordable rentals off the market. Are you from here? It shouldn’t matter. New blood with experience in other cities would be welcome. But so would natives and long-term residents. People who know we held two world’s fairs, have one of the most diversified economies in the nation, enjoy international connections including through a natural deep-water port, and the headquarters of important companies. We need a council that will build on these strengths. My door is open. Step on through. [ad_2] Source link

Mark Sutcliffe: Entrepreneur to run for mayor of Ottawa
Longtime Ottawa entrepreneur, broadcaster and author Mark Sutcliffe is running to become the next mayor of Ottawa. Sutcliffe officially registered Wednesday. “I am excited and grateful today as I officially register as a candidate to be the next mayor of Ottawa – the best city in Canada, and a place I’m proud to call my hometown,” Sutcliffe said in a news release announcing his candidacy. “Ottawa has always been considered a great place to live and work. But we are on the verge of some new and significant challenges. Our city is in an affordability crisis. Inflation is on the rise, and there is significant fear that a recession is just around the corner. We are facing a reliability crisis in our public transit system, and we need to improve our roads. On these issues and more, we need new leadership in Ottawa.” This comes amid a major change at Ottawa  city council, with Mayor Jim Watson and several current city councillors not seeking re-election. Sutcliffe has been a prominent figure in the Ottawa business community. He founded the Ottawa Business Journal in 1995, spent many years as a radio host on Newstalk 580 CFRA and 1310 News, hosted TV programa on CPAC and Rogers TV, wrote for the Ottawa Citizen, and served on the boards of numerous organizations in Ottawa. He currently hosts the Digging Deep podcast. In his platform online, Sutcliffe says, if elected, he would “adequately [fund] our police, fire, and paramedic services and being tough on the causes of crime … restore confidence in our public transit system, improve our roads…” and “[keep] taxes, recreation fees, and other costs as low as possible.” He tells CTV News that affordability is a key issue. “I keep hearing from people that they’re worried about their future,” Sutcliffe said. “I think affordability is huge. People are worried about the rising price of gas, and food, and so many other things and, as a city, we can’t pile onto that by raising taxes by a huge number and add to the affordability crisis, so we have to keep taxes as low as possible.” He also says he wants to take a new look at the LRT. “I think people are losing confidence in our public transit system. There’s just been one revelation after another at this inquiry that’s been happening,” he said. “I think the city needs fresh leadership, a fresh pair of eyes to look at this issue, to fix light rail, to get the trains running properly, and to fight for the funding to bring light rail to Kanata and Barrhaven.” Sutcliffe will be on the ballot alongside eight other candidates: Brandon Bay, Bob Chiarelli, Bernard Couchman, Graham MacDonald, Mike Maguire, Catherine McKenney, Ade Olumide, and Param Singh for the Oct. 24 election. Maguire also registered to run Wednesday. Chiarelli, a former mayor of Ottawa, said on Twitter that he welcomes any entrant into the mayor’s race and looks forward to “a positive campaign to the benefit of our citizens.” The job of Mayor is an important one that requires experience and commitment. I welcome any and all into the mayor’s race. The challenges ahead of us require a seasoned candidate who has done this before and knows how to meet the challenges head-on. 1/2 — Bob Chiarelli (@Bob_Chiarelli) June 29, 2022 https://ift.tt/9YSrFev https://ift.tt/ThRZLgc

It feels like 2018 was the culmination of years-long emotional and political whiplash. Reflecting on what has brought us to this place: 2016 filled us with a sense of political urgency that barely survived the next year. In 2017, local elections and campaign promises wreaked havoc on our hope as our sense of urgency diminished. And this past year, progress seems to be at a standstill if not rolled back in some areas.
So what happened to our 2016 sense of urgency? After the election of President Donald Trump, many people were shaken free from their ignorance to see what “marginalized” communities have known for years: White supremacy and patriarchy are alive and real. People started to mobilize by organizing marches and community meetings, and declaring schools, buses and cities to be “welcoming.” But the national arena seemed to continue to decline and people began to lose hope.
As the federal government grew more dismal, hope resurfaced in other ways.
The 2017 local elections offered an opportunity to make change in our own backyards.
Yet as we end 2018, our hope seems ill-placed. Seattle/King County is at a standstill when it comes to addressing some of our most serious social issues, such as housing affordability, homelessness and police accountability. It’s been three years since former Mayor Ed Murray declared the homelessness crisis to be a state of emergency. Last year in King County, over 29,000 individuals had to seek homeless-related services. Twenty-seven percent of King County’s homeless population is Black; 14 percent of the people who died while living outside in King County are Black. Yet Black residents make up only 6 percent of the county’s overall population. On most Seattle nights, an estimated 12,112 individuals are without adequate housing. This is an increase of more than 25 percent since 2012.
In the past two years, 531 official homeless encampment removals, also known as “sweeps”, happened across Seattle. A majority of these sweeps were performed after Mayor Durkan came into office at the end of 2017. The city conducted 340 sweeps in the first nine months of 2018, compared with 191 in all of 2017. If the trend continues to the end of the year, this will more than double the sweeps of 2017, with an increase of over 137 percent. In 2017 the city spent over $10 million on homeless sweeps alone. Over $1.5 million of that money was used to fund 10 full-time police officers. Nine of those police officers identify as white and one as Asian. These are the police officers responsible for “sweeping” Seattle’s homeless encampments, where 28 percent of people being removed are Black. The new year will show us what the 2018 numbers look like, but all signs indicate things are a lot worse.
Tumblr media
Even more, the Seattle political landscape is marred by an indecisive city council, bully corporations and a corporate Mayor Jenny Durkan. If the employee hours tax (EHT) debacle is an omen, then 2019 is looking dark. The EHT would have raised an average of $47.5 million per year — not even close to enough to begin to effectively address the homelessness and housing affordability crisis. An analysis by the consulting firm McKinsey and Company, written in partnership with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, found that King County needs an additional 14,000  units, at a cost of an additional $200 million, to meet the affordable housing needs in the region.

Our reporters have sat in courtrooms in the northeast this week handling a variety of cases – from the gambling addict who turned to crime to pay off his sprawling debts, to a trio of sexual deviants who, with two Shetland Islands, do some disgusting Things did ponies.
Gambling addict jailed for £ 223,000 worth of fraud
On Monday, a gambling addict who committed a “spectacular breach of trust” by embezzling more than £ 220,000 from one of Scotland’s largest law firms, was jailed.
Paralegal trainee Callum Scott admitted that he cheated £ 223,000 off his employer, Aberdein Considine, to pay off a series of payday loans that were used to quench his crippling addiction.
Callum Scott
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard Scott, 23, “stole from Peter to pay Paul” during the four month scam.
Man started fire to scare ex-girlfriend
However, jail wasn’t the final outcome for Jordan Stewart.
Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard Stewart start a fire in front of his ex-girlfriend’s house to scare her, “then laugh sadistically,” but he’s now given the opportunity to prove he’s a better person.
Tumblr media
Jordan Stewart.
Stewart waged a six-month terror campaign against the woman, including setting garbage bags on fire in front of her home and taking a crowbar to a closet in her property.
The 24-year-old also picked up a Stanley knife and slapped a door with it repeatedly when he made derogatory remarks at her home in mid-2020.
Supermarket clerk attacked in the aisles
A woman who assaulted a supermarket worker in the aisles in Aberdeen was found holding a knife when police showed up.
The crimes took place in Lidl’s Hutcheon Street. Portlethen woman Natalie Jenkins was caught in a separate incident with cocaine in her car – and another knife – in her car over the weekend, the Aberdeen Sheriff Court was told today.

Jenkins admitted carrying a knife to Lidl’s Hutcheon Street store earlier this month and attacking an employee there.
Man mugged for two cans of beer and a ten
On TuesdayA man returning from a supermarket visit was viciously ambushed – a crime his attacker could not remember.

Rammy Prison Cell extends the sentence
An inmate at HMP Grampian was held behind bars for an additional 12 months on Tuesday after a killing spree in a cell in which he threatened to pour boiling water over prison officials.
Dale Davidson also tore apart the shower in his cell before sanding part of the door to make a makeshift gun, Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard.

Dale Davidson, inset, committed the crimes at HMP Grampian in Peterhead.
When brave staff arrived at Peterhead Prison to calm the situation down, they were greeted by the angry inmate who waved the shower door like a battering ram and threatened to stab anyone who set foot in his cell.
Separation triggered abusive phone calls
On Tuesday, Louise Fraser also appeared before the Aberdeen Sheriff Court, who “bombarded” her former lover with insulting messages and phone calls for several months.
The court was told that Fraser’s angry reaction to the relationship breakdown in July 2019 sparked numerous phone calls to her ex-girlfriend.

She also repeatedly sent text messages, online messages, and emails over a six-month period – which resulted in the woman banning the 27-year-old from her social media channels.
It culminated in Fraser leaving threatening voicemails, behaving aggressively, and refusing to leave the woman’s home address.
Son fights for diving compensation
The widow and nine-year-old son of a tragic diver returned to court to sue the boat company hired for the fateful voyage.
Lex Warner, 50, died after leaving MV Jean Elaine while diving off the Sutherland coast in 2012.

The dispute was sparked by a disagreement about the correct furnishing of a resident’s room.
During a staff meeting two days later, the maintenance technician highlighted the problem and later followed Costello into a lounge area to discuss the problem, standing up, berating the Nigerian citizen and uttering the racist term.
“She was a pretty hard worker, I’ll give her that”
The manager of a pub in Aberdeen praised the persistence of a female robber who had spent more than 30 minutes breaking her way into the building to snatch bottles of alcohol.
Jill Wiggins used items she found in the back of the Three Lums Pub – including a beer keg and a frying pan – to try to break a window.

The 42-year-old was caught by CCTV in the morning alcohol raid, but had long since disappeared by the time the officers arrived at the scene.
However, Wiggins – who also goes by the surname Smith or Knox – was caught quickly after calling 999 herself to ask for help just hours later.
Biker driving alcohol had a passenger on his back
A teenager who rode his motorcycle more than double the legal limit with a passenger on his back was banned from the street and warned a “may not be enough” fine.
Caleb Stewart had been drinking at a house party and only had a makeshift driver’s license when he sped his bike through Aberchirder with a passenger on his back.

Nursing student cried after a car accident while she was over the limit
A young nursing student was fined and banned after crashing into four different cars while driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Megan Clark, 18, of Boddam, was more than double the alcohol limit when she plowed into vehicles in Roseangle, Dundee, in April.
Dents and scratches were caused on a Peugeot 208, Citreon C1, Kia Picanto and Volkswagen Golf.
Drunk Clark was confronted with witnesses who were concerned about her driving and initially denied causing the damage.
Then she burst into tears and said she was going to visit her boyfriend.
Drinks driver turned the car on the city street
A woman who rolled her car more than five times the alcohol limit has been banned from the streets for more than two years.
Rosemary Bennett was behind the wheel of Aberdeen’s Argyle Place early in the morning when she collided with a parked car and threw hers on the roof.
Aberdeen Sherriff Court heard the 29-year-old being found by a delivery driver who discovered the wreck and called the police and an ambulance.
Bennett was then escorted to the Kittybrewster Detention Center, where she read 117 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath. The limit is only 22 micrograms.
Teacher detained for sexual activity with students
On Friday, a school teacher was sentenced to 15 months in prison after engaging in sexual acts with two students.

A distant jury found the majority of the 36-year-olds guilty of being in a position of trust as a teacher and of having directed sexual activities other than sexual intercourse with or against a student in 2009.
He kissed and had sexual activities with the girl while he was employed as a teacher at a school in Shetland.
Benefits Cheat had £ 100,000 in their bank account
A scammer who received nearly £ 35,000 in benefits while banked over £ 100,000 was told she was lucky not to be in jail.
Lorraine Mearns demanded thousands of pounds in taxpayers’ money by lying to officials about how much money she had in the bank over six years.

Between January 2012 and April 2018, Mearns knowingly misrepresented her income to the Department of Labor and Pensions in order to claim £ 13,368 in employment and benefit allowances that she was not entitled to.
She requested an additional £ 19,960 in housing and council tax breaks between November 2012 and March 2018 by doing the same to Aberdeen City Council.
Even her own lawyer said her claim that the fraud was accidental was “ridiculous”.
Sexual deviants had sex with Shetland ponies
A sexual deviator was jailed after having sex with a Shetland pony while his buddy evaded jail for being a teenager at the time.
Jordan Turnbull (28) and Joshua Lee-Paterson (20) each admitted to having an “unnatural connection” to different horses on the Cothal Farm in Fintray.

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Tuesday 3rd July 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Not a drop of wind is blowing this morning and it’s warm, 26c it’s been similar weather in parts of Scotland for quite a few days now, so you would think that people who share their lives with Dogs, would understand that it gets very hot inside a car with the windows closed when the damn sun is shining on it! It’s not just a Scottish thing to do.. When I lived in Arizona people would return to find that the window of their cars had been knocked out by the local police and the dog/dogs inside taken to the pound, because of the excessive heat, I guess there are idiots all over the world…
POLICE IN NORTH EAST FIFE RESCUE 'BOILING' DOG FROM CAR…. A dog owner is to be charged after police smashed a car window to rescue a dog which was inside in record-breaking heat. After the incident in North East Fife, officers said the animal was "boiling". The dog was given water and taken to a vet for checks. The vet was later reported to have "no further concerns" about the animal. Officers have again called for people not to leave animals in vehicles during hot weather.
HOAX COASTGUARD DISTRESS CALL RELEASED BY POLICE…. A recording of hoax distress call which sparked a major rescue operation has been released by police. The mayday radio message was received on 18 June reporting that a boat with people on board was in trouble in the Moray Firth Three lifeboats, a coastguard helicopter and fishing vessels joined the operation but nothing was found. Police said the call was believed to have been made from the Banff and Macduff area. The caller appears to say: "Mayday, mayday, mayday. Silver Tide, Silver Tide. Three P.O.B. Abandon ship. Abandon. Off Tarlair." Insp Megan Heathershaw said she hoped that by taking the unusual step of releasing the audio, police would be able to trace the person responsible. She said: "Any distress call made to the emergency services will be taken seriously and these calls have led to the intensive use of time and resources by the coastguard and other emergency services. "We have taken the relatively unusual step of releasing a copy of this call to the public and appeal for help in identifying the person responsible. "I would ask for anyone who recognises the voice on the transmission to please contact us as soon as possible. "Likewise I would also appeal to this person directly to get in touch with us. "We would ask that anyone with information gets in touch with police on 101 using reference number PS-20180619-1402. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
LOGANAIR POSTS LOSSES OF NEARLY £9M…. Scottish operator Loganair has reported a pre-tax loss of £8.93m for the year to March 2018. The airline, based at Glasgow Airport, has blamed the end of its franchise agreement with Flybe. This resulted in the airlines competing directly on six routes, including five in the Highlands and Islands. Without the non-recurring items associated with the airline's former partner, Loganair would have recorded an underlying pre-tax profit of £2.95m. After the break-up with Flybe, Loganair spent £2.98m re-establishing its own brand and back-office functions. Delays in code-sharing agreements with new business partners cost a further £2.09m. But the biggest loss has been attributed to a price war with Flybe, estimated by Loganair to have cost it £6.8m. Chairman David Harrison said: "This year's results bring to an end 17 consecutive years in profit for Loganair, and the fact that we forecast last year that we would be loss-making in 2017/18 makes it no less painful. "The extent of the loss is a direct result of competition on six of our eight largest routes, and from the outset we maintained that the markets on these routes were simply not big enough to sustain the level of seat capacity being introduced. "This indeed proved to the case." Managing director Jonathan Hinkles said the airline's customers had remained loyal to it. Loganair did manage to increase turnover, by 7% to £110.7m. Passenger numbers were also up by 6.2%, to a record high for the airline of 812,541. Managing director Jonathan Hinkles said: "We have carried out a full rebrand, repainted our aircraft in tartan livery, introduced new crew and ground staff uniform, brought in a comprehensive system of service improvements for our customers and launched a significant sales and marketing programme - a tremendous effort by the whole Loganair team.
TEENAGERS HURT IN EDINBURGH MASS STREET BRAWL….Two teenage boys have been hurt in a mass street brawl near a police station in Edinburgh. A large group of youths were reported to be involved in the fight on High Street in Portobello at about 17:00 on Monday. One 15-year-old and a 17-year-old were left with facial injuries. Police are looking for witnesses to help them establish exactly how many people were involved and to try to trace them. Det Sgt Mark Lumsden, from the Violence Reduction Unit, said: "At this time, we do not know how many people have been part of this altercation, or what the reason for it was. "As such, we are keen to hear from members of the public who were in the High Street area on Monday afternoon and witnessed what happened. "In addition, anyone who can help us identify any suspects for this incident should also contact police immediately."
SCOTTISH BORDERS CEMETERIES LEFT IN 'TATTY STATE'…. A council is to be asked to reverse a decision to change its grass-cutting regime amid claims it has left cemeteries in a "tatty state". The Scottish Borders local authority recently switched from a 10-day to a 20-day cycle. Opposition councillor Jim Brown said the situation was "disrespectful to those no longer with us". The council has said the change was based on a successful trial, but added there had been "some challenges". Mr Brown is expected to raise the issue at a full council meeting and ask the authority to go back to a 10-day cycle, writes local democracy reporter Joseph Anderson. He said he had raised the issue last month due to the "disgraceful state" of Castlewood Cemetery in Jedburgh. "The problem isn't just confined to the Cheviot area: across the Borders from Peebles to Chirnside there is anger from the public specifically at the long grass and the unsightly state of our cemeteries," he said. "There were even a group of callants in the Peebles Beltane parade last Saturday, dressed as skeletons, who were mocking the mess that has been made of our cemeteries. "But there is a serious side to this. "The public are complaining, with justification, that they pay the council for a burial plot and that payment should be used, in part, to maintain cemeteries to an acceptable standard." He said the cemeteries were a "disgrace to the council". The issue was raised at last week's meeting of the Teviotdale area partnership, where council officers came face-to-face with residents and community councillors. The council's neighbourhood manager, Jason Headley, explained the rationale behind the decision. He said it had been agreed that "significant savings" could be made - some of them from grass-cutting and maintenance.
"Clearly, though, if you don't cut the grass as often, then between those cuts the grass will be longer.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is by William Rankin who took this picture while doing the blue door walk at Edzell, Angus.

A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Tuesday 3rd July 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…

I don’t believe in politics
I have politics. I think we need to tax the rich and use that money to help the poor. I think that includes the ultra-rich but also working rich like me. I think we need to regulate industries which when unregulated are shown to have detrimental societal effects. And I think we need to fund research into what kinds of things have detrimental societal effects so that we’re not just strong-armed by major players in those industries. I think that whatever regulations we come up with shouldn’t be so strong that people are no longer motivated and excited to build businesses, and I think that it’s good for industrial people to be monetarily compensated for their industriousness, but that at a certain point they have been compensated enough and that money would be better spent helping those less well off.
But here’s the truth. I have never really believed in politics. I have never felt like it matters to my day-to-day who the president is. I have never felt like either of the two large parties represent my interests. I have never felt like any political movements outside of the two large parties have any realistic chance of affecting large scale change. I have been told that local politics is the only real politics and yet I have never been to a city council meeting. I am supportive of protesters but I don’t expect their success.
When Trump was president I maintained that he for the most part was enacting normal Republican policies, and the most pervasive criticism of him, though it was not put this way, was that he doesn’t think before saying things. And I still believe this. Every accusation that Trump is a racist or sexist more or less breaks down into a) he said some racist or sexist stuff without thinking about it and b) he simultaneously supports some normal Republican policy which is argued to lead to regressive outcomes.
Even when Trump supporters attempted to impede the final confirmation of Biden’s election victory, it still didn’t seem real. Even as every news outlet, all of my friends, all of my social media was talking about it, whether or not to call it a riot, a protest, or a coup, what it said about the double standard of police, the double standard of progressives, or the double standard of conservatives – even then, it didn’t seem real. On the contrary, it felt like the series finale of Game of Thrones was on: it was an exciting, public, cultural moment, which was also fictional and conceptually distant from anything actually affecting me. Even a friend in DC told me it was remarkable how little disturbance there was to anything not near the actual Capitol building. In fact, “thousands” of protesters is not very many people. Even the upper bound of ten thousand is not very many people. The US is not literally on fire. And whether or not you call it a “coup” does not change the ineptitude of the operation through the lens of actual revolution, to the point where it begins to make more sense to view it as something closer to a sporting event / renaissance fair.
To be fair, I do think Trump’s inciting of this event was totally unprecedented, not at all a normal Republican tactic, and also as people have been saying, absolutely predictable given the last four years. Though maybe I differ from the Twitter armchair experts in that my armchair analysis is that this is more about class war and the partisan divide than the white power movement.
But now that Biden’s term has started it has reminded me again that I really still don’t believe in politics. That the president has changed, and the biggest shift in my life is that I no longer get to be the contrarian pointing out the president sucks but not for the reasons you think he does, and now have to revert back to just pointing out that the president sucks.
And you’re saying, hey, if you feel like the policies set by our government don’t affect you, maybe that’s because they don’t. And maybe they don’t because you have the privilege of being well educated, well off, having a strong safety net, being raised in a safe place, having your health, and facing more or less no oppression. And if you cared about other people who are experiencing this oppression, maybe then you would care about politics. Maybe then you would do something about it. There’s a goddamn pandemic. Trump dropped the ball. Who knows if a Democrat president would have done a better job and avoided 400,000 deaths. Maybe even a more normal Republican president would have done a better job. Three times as many Americans are out of a job than in the 2008 recession. They’re waiting for stimulus money to come in. Most Americans have less than $5000 saved up. This $2000 is going to feed people. It’s going to save lives. I mean not literally, because our welfare services are good enough that very few people literally starve in the US. But improving lots of people’s lives is also an objectively good thing to do, you don’t have to go all the way to literal life-saving. And stimulus money and COVID response are just a few examples of real life change that depends on politics. Lives are at stake.
Well okay. Sometimes I do think I’m better than other people on social media because I’m not getting as worked up about politics. Sometimes I do vaguely feel that smart people who understand what’s really going on and aren’t just getting swept up in trendy politics are less angry about the scandal of the week and What It Says About Society. That those who can get over initial tribalistic emotional responses to things end up having a more Pinker-esque optimistic view. That in the grand scheme of things, short term political movements mean a lot less than scientific achievements gradually raising the water line. That getting worried about them is a waste of energy insofar as it’s just worry, and even if you are the 1 in 50 people who actually translates that worry into action, even the action tends to be a fairly ineffective use of your time.
But I do also think it’s important for me to remember that policies affect the real world. And to the credit of people who get worked up about politics, I think a major strength you have over me is that you remember this all the time. You’re absolutely right that a lot of policies don’t impact me because I’m not very oppressed. Even almost all of my social circle (queer children of immigrants who are minorities) is not very oppressed. But I know oppression exists. Maybe it’s not enough to just vote in elections. Maybe we should be in the streets and on the phones. Maybe the US is sort of on fire and having a measured response isn’t all that valuable.
And at this point I would just like to say, congratulations on ALMOST understanding our place in the world as Americans. Because the truth is that the US is sort of on fire. In fact, the whole world is sort of on fire, and the US is one of the least on fire places to be. US residents estimate that the global median income is $20,000 a year. In fact, it’s $2100 a year. The US is the out-of-touch 1% of the world.
Here’s my thought process when I encounter US political angst on social media. First: this is a dumb thing to get upset about. Second: But I guess it’s good that you care about the wellbeing of others. Third: Except if you care about the wellbeing of others, then in the grand scheme of things, this is not the thing you should be getting upset about.
Sure, sometimes I forget that US politics matters. But then when I see people acting like the reason it matters is because they care about other people, I start to become more confused. I do think people care about other people, but I also think they are extremely prone to just reacting to whatever media is beamed into their eyes, and so unless they work really hard to curate those beams, they end up saying and writing things which hit this weird inconsistent type of caring that looks like virtue-signaling to outsiders, but which I try to understand as being just a non-rigorous, emotional, plea for connection -- a sort of “I’m hurting, do other people feel this way?”
And then at the same time, these people know in the back of their heads that there’s a lot of people in the world who have it really bad, whose lives could be improved if they donated small amounts of their wealth to effective causes. And I start to think, these people don’t think global poverty is real! I mean, they don’t think it doesn’t exist, it’s just not real to them the way US politics are. It doesn’t take them on an emotional journey. It’s not beamed directly into their eyeballs. And it’s not chic to care about. 400,000 deaths? So one year of global Malaria? $2000 stimulus? So one year of median global income? I’m not saying that greater pain invalidates lesser pain, I’m just asking you to have some perspective before you come telling me to have some perspective.
So what do we do? Well, there’s the Giving What We Can Pledge. I took this when I first got a job outside college and have since donated over 10% of my income every year to effective global charities. Peter Singer advocates for a sliding scale which makes sense to me -- 10% means a lot more to people with less than me. And that money can save literal lives (at a much higher rate than it can in the US). It’s not popular because it’s not easy. I mean it is functionally very easy to do, but it’s not easy to walk yourself to a place where you want to. I mean it’s your money, and you probably already help the less fortunate in other ways.
But it is political in a way that is very real. It’s political in the way that investing in education is political. Deworming children (for about 30 cents each) so they can attend school and to avoid organ damage has been shown to dramatically increase their life outcomes. Delivering Vitamin A supplements (for about 1 dollar each) substantially reduces child mortality. It is an apolitical good.
I wrote this because I was frustrated. The thing that improves the world is never the thing that people are talking about. If everyone took the GWWC pledge, we would have enough money to solve global poverty, eliminate all treatable diseases, fund research into the untreatable ones for approximately the next forever, educate anybody who needs educating, feed anybody who needs feeding, fund an unparalleled renaissance in the arts, permanently save every rainforest in the world, and have enough left over to launch five or six different manned missions to Mars. And that’s using just 1 year’s donations. Yet people, global one-percenters nonetheless, seem to continue getting angry about things that matter less.
I wrote this because in real life I would only ever be supportive of someone wanting to get involved politically. I am a firm believer that the war is not to be fought between people who both want to help but in different ways, but between those who want to do something and the apathetic. If you want to get on social media and harness political rage as a way to enact eventual policy change to help people, then in theory I’d like to support it.
I wrote this because I wanted to express the tiring thing about your politics to me. That it’s all lies. It’s all half-true stories being published and publicized. News which is sold because it’s what people are buying. It matters, it doesn’t matter. And none of it’s real, except it’s all real, it’s just not happening to you. But in the end there are still other people, and they are still our neighbors, and we do still want the best for them. So it is good to keep trying. Maybe even consider adopting radical politics like me. Take matters into your own hands and seize the power to do good by recognizing that we the one-percenters of the world already have it.

Social Movements
So this is where I think I lose some of you who have been so gracious about my posts. I've been pretty safe up until this point (only three posts in, not that many), but this is where I feel there will be some conflict.
I started writing this six days ago at five in the morning. Since I started this blog, I knew this was a topic I wanted to talk about. Apparently, the built-up of excitement got me to wake up and not calm down until I wrote.
This is my second draft, by the way. The first one was, as I said, written at 5 in the morning, so there were spelling errors galore and grammatical whatthefucks everywhere. So let's try this again!
I'm happy to be in a time where we are seeing more people step up against inequality. It never quite made sense to me, even as a kid, to think I was better than someone else in society just because of how I was born. I'm happy to tell anyone that black lives do matter, so much so that I hope it's a cliché one day to say that because "well duh, everyone matters". And the same goes for gender equality. While there are differences, we are all human, and me owning another person as property or thinking I have to be domineering to women to have respect. I'll stay confident-neutral: respect and love to all, with the hope I get the same in return, while still loving who I am.
I suppose you can sense the shift is coming, huh?
Kind of.
There is no counter to what I said before. There is no condition to loving and respecting everyone I see (only that they treat me in a similar way; the golden rule). What I have a counter to is what we see more of: social movements.
Social movements do not have the impact they should. Right out of the gate, movements like BLM or Gay Rights or #MeToo do phenomenally. It seems like a train is moving that people are happy to jump onto, from politicians to celebrities to Joe down the street, it feels good to be part of something that is new-ish and gaining momentum. And the motives are so pure. Equal rights! Right to marry whoever! No pink tax! Only a monster would consciously notice that and actively work against it. Those people should be brought down. But onto the matter at hand...
There are two problems I see with these movements that cause it to lose all credibility: hate and greed. Both are subtle, but noticeable if you're looking.
Hate occurs when there's a lull in a movement. It's no longer about the purity of this right. It's about finding an enemy and giving them a taste of their own medicine. An eye for an eye! Sounds fair, right? What happens, however, is the hate that faced the prejudiced group is only redirected, never eliminated. The hate that a white police officer shows to a black man unjustly needs to be sent back to the police officer, people will say. He needs to get what he deserves!
No he doesn't. There could be many reasons why he's like that: poor parenting, wrong city culture, unconsciously following the leaders like many of us do! Like I said, the monsters are the ones who know right and wrong and choose wrong anyway. How many of these people truly are consciously committing evil when they could be acting unknowingly? You do NOT create a culture of love and respect by directing love the other way. You do it by forgiveness. By showing you're better than the ones who cause harm. Calling out Jimmy Fallon for using blackface in the late 90's will not bring justice to our system.
Greed is the other problem. Let me say this: I support black lives matter, but I do not support BLM. Does that make sense?
Over the past few months, companies like Nike, Netflix, Reddit, Audible, and hundreds of others are sending out support for their black employees. Some are even featuring black content on their homepages. Great. But what was the motive for doing that? Let's say you're a multi-billion dollar company and you see a movement for hamster rights (weird example, but bear with me). As a PR head of the company, you may think "What the fuck? This is stupid! The world was fine before!" However, every other major billion dollar empire is featuring books on hamsters and movies like G-Force on their front page. Well shit, as the head of PR, you better get on it, because the world will see that you did not support hamsters and will vilify you! Send out that email that you support all your hamster workers and put up an orange and white flag on your social media. Otherwise, you won't survive as a company.
That's just on a business level. How many of you posted the black screen on your Instagram? I did, and it felt good to be part of something that, by the time I posted, 12 million people already tagged. But people still took advantage of the post that was only supposed to say #blackouttuesday. Next to it, they put a post telling people "you should really increase your awareness like I did" or even, instead of a black screen, posting a picture of themselves modeling. Because they were so overwhelmed with love and support, they couldn't help but look at the camera in a sexy way! What a hard life.
You want true, honest activism? Look up Zianna Oliphant's speech to the Charlotte City Council. A nine year old girl in tears speaking about how it shouldn't be this way. Nine years old. My word was weeping as I watched that. Or maybe Tarana Burke coining the phrase "MeToo" back in 2006 empowering women through empathy. Trailblazer in her own right. But don't expect my ass to just sit here while I listen to all the bandwagoners jump onto some movement that's catching heat when in reality you don't know what you believe and you're really just acting like everyone else because you don't know how to think for yourself. And also (rant continued) it is not brave to sit behind your screen and harass those who do not believe the same things you do. You are not a hero. Step up to the plate and express the love that's real, not the faux affection you put up because you want to be noticed or liked. This is my passion: people thinking for themselves and defending what they know is important, not because anyone told them to believe it, but because they decided it for themselves. I will die by free thinking. Would you die for your values?
Selfishly, I have noticed another trend that will start to become more real. This is something I've known for the last 10 years. And it is: some day, someone like me (straight, white, man, middle-class family, tall, blonde hair, Christian parents) will be seen as the enemy. In every one of those areas I have been called ignorant. Soon, someone will just have to look at me (if some don't already) and get filled with nothing but hate. I don't want that. But I also don't want that for anyone else. That's why I express my concerns like this.
I would love to have a conversation on this topic. Whether you disagree or love it, let's have a civil conversation. I am open for the opportunity to be wrong on anything I have said, but just know I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I have said, and I won't be swayed easily.
The heart is crucial in times like this. Love, joy, compassion, peace, forgiveness, it's all needed. I want to see the world grow. I want love, not hate. Generosity, not greed. People, not profit.

Marijuana Addiction Signs - Are You Addicted to Marijuana?
"It occurred to be lately while enjoying television that the U.S. Federal government is actually nothing greater than the political version of Jabba The Hutt from the Star Wars motion pictures. As you may recall, Jabba was a formless, slow-moving moving, overweight entity that ruled with an iron fist while feeding on resources gave him. He did not spend for anything, he simply took them, and he was not there to aid anybody but himself. Those he subjugated had no say in just how their sources as well as wide range were utilized and also had no chance in displacing Jabba from his position of power. Type of sounds like our political class presently being in DC.
Jabba came to mind today as I thought about some current incidents in which the Federal government has actually gotten so big that it is doubling back on itself as well as placing itself in some really odd scenarios and conflicts with the truth of the globe around us:
- According to a short article in the July 23, 2010 concern of The Week magazine, a Boston Federal judge has actually ruled parts of the Federal Protection of Marriage Act to be unconstitutional. This act forbids the Federal federal government from recognizing gay marital relationships as well as approving Federal advantages. The court ruled that the Federal legislation forces Massachusetts to discriminate against it very own citizens. Now for the weird part. the Obama administration is currently forced to appeal the ruling, despite the fact that his management and also the Democrats in charge of Congress oppose the Defense of Marital relationship Act and want it reversed. The Federal government has actually obtained so large that it is using up lawful sources for something that it does not want to exist to begin with.
- This weird circumstance resembles the existing illegal alien circumstance. A recent Associated press post reported that the most recent statistics relative to unlawful boundary crossers shows that the Federal government lately had the highest levels of prosecutions for illegal doral addiction treatment aliens as well as the highest deportation degrees of illegals because they began keeping an eye on such stats however at the same time this same Federal federal government was in court dealing with the new Arizona state regulation that was trying to stem the flow of illegal aliens into that state.

- Returning to gay marital relationships, according to a July 15, 2010 Associated Press short article, the country of Argentina just recently ended up being the very first Latin American country to legalize gay marital relationship. The post reported that Chile as well as numerous other South American countries are most likely to try and follow suit. Do we think that our Jabba, parading as the American political class, has any kind of chance of making that occur in this country when it discovers itself in court preventing gay legal rights?
- According to an article in the August concern of Factor publication, given that 1996 fourteen states as well as the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis usage for clinical functions as well as numerous various other states are taking into consideration doing the same. This remains in straight conflict with Federal law which has actually in some cases resulted in Federal raids of clinical cannabis suppliers which are prohibited under Federal law however legal under state law. This is additionally in conflict with Obama the campaigner who wanted to legalize the medicine when he ran for Head of state but now protects the disallowing of it at the Federal level. Once again, government has actually obtained so big that we have gone into the unusual area relating to medical marijuana where it is legal at the same time as being prohibited.
- Mentioning drug problems, a recent Associated Press article reported that the Federal Veterans Matters company would certainly permit its people to utilize clinical marijuana if those people resided in the fourteen states where clinical cannabis is lawful. Hence, one arm of the Federal federal government (Veterans Affairs) is completely fine with medical cannabis usage while various other arms of the Federal government (FBI, DEA, Federal sculpture) wants to wipe it out.
- If you assume the Federal federal government has a medicine problem currently, wait until the Oakland Common council votes on whether to allow commercial farming of marijuana to be developed in city restrictions, industrial ranches which would create cannabis for clinical usage in addition to for use in products ranging from baked products to body oil. Winning applicants that would certainly operate these ranches would have to pay yearly authorization charges and also eight percent of their sales to tax obligations as well as lug $2 million in responsibility insurance coverage. Comparable initiatives are being pushed in other cities throughout the state in addition to a November ballot concern to legalize non-medical use marijuana, according to the write-up. Currently think about the materials of a brief blurb in the July 23, 2010 issue of The Week magazine that reported on a Rand Research that ended from their analysis that the legalization of marijuana would minimize the street price by up to 90%. Thus, the initiatives in The golden state might help in reducing the street price of the drug which subsequently would dramatically minimize the power, riches and impact of the Mexican drug cartels which would certainly be an advantage. Nevertheless, despite this great set of outcomes (even more earnings for the city governments, less of a stigma of marijuana individuals, much less police sources spent on busting cannabis customers, the weakening of the Mexican drug cartels) do we believe that the Jabba the Hutt beast in DC is active enough to comprehend what the advantages are or will it continue down its path of problem at the Federal drug enforcement level?
- Take Into Consideration a Washington Message post from Might, 2007, entitled ""Federal Loans Fuel Promote Coal Power Plants."" The short article reviews a remaining Anxiety age Federal program that gives inexpensive lendings to build coal discharged, high pollution nuclear power plant making use of taxpayer money. According to the write-up, ""the [loan] support is a major pressure behind the thrill to coal plants, which spew co2 that researchers condemn for international warming."" Thus, while the Obama management is pressing a climate control costs in order to combat versus international warming, the exact same government is funding nuclear power plant that do simply the opposite. Makes no feeling.
- A current Associate Press post reported how the Feds had busted 94 people for ripping off the Medicare program. This was an excellent advancement but why was our Jabba so slow in getting these apprehensions done? Medicare fraudulence has been going on since the day Medicare began numerous decades ago, why did it take such a shateringly slow time to start detaining the cheats? One of those jailed had filed over 3,700 illegal cases under her name before she was jailed, just how sluggish can you obtain?
We could go on and on. The UNITED STATE government has gotten so big and so sluggish, similar to Jabba the Hutt, that its many folds up of skin hide waste, stupidness and the doubling back on itself, i.e. public law and also activities in conflict with itself or the desires of those running the government. We could go on and on regarding exactly how slow, inefficient, and also inefficient our Jabba is, concerning how our Jabba never resolves a trouble whether it is troubled boundaries, failing public institutions, intensifying health care costs, etc., exactly how our Jabba wastes unknown billions of bucks on earmarks, ineffective campaigns, and also fraud-infested programs, or just how our Jabba does not know just how to control the economy, causing sky high public debt levels and also a really creaky financial situation with low growth as well as high joblessness.
Jabba is really negative for all of us but he is hard to remove. With the earmark procedure, the gerrymandering of Congressional areas, do-nothing campaign money laws, and also various other methods, Jabba has many defenses against defeat in an election, defenses that also a Jedi light saber can not conveniently pierce. Long-term, it is vital we start to impose term limitations on political leaders so that they never again obtain as fat, slow-moving, inefficient, as well as inefficient as Jabba The Hutt. Short-term, this November is vital because it starts the procedure of voting out the Jabba incumbents and lastly entering some streamlined, efficient, and brave Jedi warriors who will make the difficult decisions to get the size of government controlled as well as make that scaled down government a lot more effective and less strange and also less conflicted."

JACOBIN MAGAZINE
Gayle McLaughlin is one of the leading political revolutionaries in the United States today. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and one of the founders of the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA), an independent political organization based in Richmond, California that unites left activists across party lines. She served as a Richmond city council member from 2005-7, mayor from 2007–2015, and again as a city council member from 2015–17.
During this time, the RPA has distinguished itself as one of the most important political organizations in the country. Through electoral activity and community organizing it has challenged the power of Chevron, the oil company that dominated Richmond for decades, and implemented a wide array of local reforms including rent control and a $15 minimum wage. McLaughlin is currently working to expand the RPA model to towns and cities across California and connect corporate-free organizations through a new statewide formation called the California Progressive Alliance (CPA).
Here, we’ve reprinted McLaughlin’s interview with DSA’s Socialist Forum. They discuss her recent campaign for lieutenant governor, the RPA and the CPA, democratic socialism and the role of elected officials in the movement, and the meaning of political revolution today.
Socialist Forum:
You just ran for lieutenant governor in California. Why did you run, and how did the campaign go?
GAYLE MCLAUGHLIN:
I ran for the statewide office of lieutenant governor because I have served nearly thirteen years in elected office in Richmond: eight years as mayor and over four and a half years as a city council member. Overall we did some major work in Richmond by beating back this big oil giant in our city, Chevron. Over the course of about a decade, we beat Chevron’s money to the point where we have five city council seats filled by corporate-free council members. That’s out of seven total, so it’s a supermajority.
That’s because we have an alliance called the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA). I am a co-founder of the RPA, which we started back in 2003 to build a local movement and run corporate-free candidates. Because we had success in the electoral realm and building our local movement, we were able to do some major things like reducing crime by addressing the roots of violence and giving people opportunity — the homicide rate is down 75 percent.
We also won over $100 million in additional city taxes from Chevron, and we were able to limit their pollution. We’ve raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour and passed the first rent control law in California in thirty years, and we’ve implemented many green policies and supported our immigrants as a sanctuary city.
All of these things came about because we had our local movement and our corporate-free representatives in office. People started asking us, all over the state and even in other parts of the country, how we did it. So I began giving presentations around the state about the RPA model and that led to running a statewide campaign. When you run a statewide campaign, you have a larger stage, and we wanted large numbers of people to hear our message about building local political power.
The campaign for lieutenant governor really had two wings. One was to encourage local progressive alliance building, like the RPA, and about a dozen new progressive alliances have formed all over California and more are coming. And the second wing of the campaign was to try to actually get elected.
That was a harder challenge because California’s a big state, but we galvanized so many people. We didn’t get into the top two in California’s open primary, and the top two winners spent millions of dollars in getting elected and essentially buying those spots. But we reached hundreds of thousands of supporters, and got over a quarter-million votes.
I gave presentations to hundreds of groups and we had thirty-nine California Our Revolution (OR) endorsements as well as the national OR. We had a number of chapter-level DSA endorsements as well as the national DSA endorsement, Green Party endorsements, the Peace and Freedom Party, Movement for a People’s Party, and so on. We had a hundred groups supporting us, more than any other statewide candidate in terms of getting this level of progressive group endorsements.
It would have been great to have won the lieutenant governor’s seat because we could have rallied around it to continue the organizing, but the organizing continues regardless.  I now have more statewide name recognition and am touring, still, around the state to bring people together, to bring groups together and to network. We’re calling ourselves the California Progressive Alliance (CPA) and we’re planning a statewide founding convention in February 2019.
Socialist Forum:
You mentioned something called the “RPA model.” What exactly is that? What is the RPA, where did it come from and how does it operate?
GAYLE MCLAUGHLIN:
We got tired of seeing our city spiral downward. Prior to the founding of the RPA in 2003 the whole city council was in the hands of Chevron. Council members were bought off by the company, or they were intimidated by Chevron, and the corporate model was in place for how decisions were made. It was always, “Well, just wait, things will trickle down to help the people struggling the most in Richmond.” We’re a low-income community, a working-class community, and a lot of things were just left to deteriorate. So we decided to be the leaders we were waiting for.
We were activists in Richmond, and many of us had a long-term history of activism and other struggles, antiwar and such. We decided to come together regardless of party preference. Some of us were Green Party members, some were progressive Democrats, and some had no party preference. We came together to build local political power and we did this by running candidates without any corporate money and also by just working with the city’s issue-based organizations.
We started holding forums, held a people’s convention in the city, and joined with the unions, SEIU in particular. We fought against the police union, which was extremely corrupt, as well as the corrupt fire union which had bought off elections in the past. As activists, we just decided we had had enough and we were going to take control, put the power in our own hands by having some of us step up as candidates and having community leaders join together and stand for a new way of doing politics in Richmond.
