“mum seriously? Felix? as in the only person i absolutely hate with a passion Felix?” your mum rolled her eyes at your outburst. it wasn’t a shock to her that you were mad, you and Felix had grown up together but for some reason the two of you never got along. your parents had grown up together and had obviously been planning this for some time.
“i’m sorry sweetheart but yes, it will be good for the two of you to finally get along, he is a really sweet boy you know” you huffed “we could get along without getting married? i mean, i’m only 20 years old. i have my whole life ahead of me to get married” you ran a hand through your hair.
“why do i not get a say in this? shouldn’t i be able to say yes or no to this?” you were frustrated, you hated Felix. and no marriage certificate was ever going to change that. “stop being silly y/n. Elspeth is so excited to have you as a daughter in law, she loves you” your mum tried to end it there but you were not giving up.
“dad please tell her she is being irrational, there is no way you have agreed to this as well” you looked over at your dad “i’m sorry honey but i have agreed and so has the Catton family. you have no idea how good this would be for us, you will be bringing two very strong bloodlines together” you wanted to scream.
marrying Felix was the worst possible thing to probably ever happen in your life. Felix was an asshole to you, rude, snobby and ignorant. he thought he was this incredible man but in reality he was just a bastard, and you would be marrying him? you wanted the ground to open up and swallow you.
“i’m sure the two of you will get along just fine, you’re being a little dramatic honey. you’re going to have a beautiful dress, a beautiful ceremony, it’ll be amazing. and Felix is a very a handsome boy and you are a gorgeous girl, your kids will be absolutely perfect” you choked on your saliva
“kids? mum are you joking? i’m begging you, please don’t force me to marry him, my life will be a misery” your mum shook her head. “enough. this is final. you will marry Felix, end of story” your dad said making you and your mum look at him. you did not ever think that you would be in an arranged marriage with Felix Catton.
“now, get ready darling, we are going to saltburn to celebrate” this was going to be hell.
-♡-
“Felix darling, will you come here for a moment please?” Felix heard his mother call out as he walked past the living room. he saw his mum and dad sat on the sofa next to each other with huge smiles on their faces. he walked into the living room and sat on the sofa opposite the two of them “should i be worried?” he said jokingly, running a hand through his disheveled hair.
“no of course not” his mum laughed. “we have some news for you which you may not like the sound of at first, but, i think the idea will grow on you” his dad said, excitement filling his voice.
“we have been speaking to y/n’s parents” Felix rolled his eyes at the mention of your name. “and we have all collectively decided that it’s time for the two of you to finally know that you will be getting married” Elspeth squealed in excitement.
his jaw dropped “isn’t that amazing? oh god it’s so nice for the secret to finally be out” his father seemed just as ecstatic as his mother.
“you are joking right?” his mothers smile faltered “no, it’s not, you two are getting married. oh i am so thrilled Felix, we have been planning this for ages and now that you both know i think it’s really set it in stone.” he shook his head at her.
“no, absolutely not. i’m sorry but there is no way in hell that i am marrying y/n” he shook his head and laughed. “this is bullshit, we fucking hate each other, why the fuck would you two even think that is a good idea?” he felt sick. “Felix, don’t use that type of language please” Elspeth said.
“mum, she’s a bitch. you really think i want to marry her?” James shook his head “she is a lovely girl. it’ll be good for us Felix. and it will be nice for you two to get along” Felix scoffed at his father. “you guys can plan this as much as you want, but i am not marrying that girl. i am 22 years old and i am old enough to make my own decisions, no is no”
“you will be, sorry Felix but it’s already started to be planned. the two of you will be getting married so you best start to try and get along. you guys will be moving into a lovely house after your honeymoon, you two will be fine” Elspeth said, her voice stern.
“now, since you know the news, go get ready. we are having a huge party to celebrate your engagement” he scoffed and walked away from his parents. this was going to be a long night.
-♡-
your mother had already picked out your engagement party dress and to be honest she did a good job of picking it. the dress wasn’t too over the top which you were grateful for. this whole idea of getting married to someone you hated was a lot of getting used too. you didn’t even have a ring yet which you knew would make it feel more real.
when you envisioned yourself your life you didn’t expect to get married for a few more years, and you would be getting married to someone you actually loved. you never thought your parents would force you to get married to anyone, let alone Felix. “are you excited for the party?” your mum said pulling you out of your thoughts.
you gave her a tight lipped smile and nodded “look, i know it’s not what you wanted but we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t think it would work out. you and Felix will love each other in no time. i think when you two spend time together you will start to really like him” she grabbed ahold of your hand.
you were honestly willing to try the marriage thing for the sake of your parents, Felix was nice to everyone but you and you wanted to find out why. “oh, we invited practically everyone we know so be prepared to show fake smiles” she added as you stopped outside of Saltburn. knowing that you had to be lovey dovey with Felix made you anxious, it’s not like it was going to be easy when the two of you despised each other.
“right, let’s get this over with” you said as you exited the car, your mum scoffed “don’t speak like that y/n, you will enjoy yourself” she said as she linked her arm with your fathers. you followed behind the two of them and looked around the front garden of Saltburn, it had been covered in all different types of gold decorations.
Duncan the butler was waiting for you all at the front of the house, even though it was a party his face was still nonchalant. “theyre all waiting for you in the back garden, guests have already began to arrive.” your mother and father thanked him and made their way inside “not even going to break a smile for me, this is a party after all” you joked “enjoy the party y/n” he said making you laugh and brush past him. there was no breaking Duncan.
you made your way to the back garden which was just like the front, covered in gold decorations with guests slowly filling every section dressed in their party attire. you spotted Elspeth, James and Felix with your parents and you knew you would have to go over there. you put on your best brave faces d made your way over there.
Felix looked miserable as he stood next to his mother his eyes fixated on the grass. he hated the thought of you, he hated the thought of the two of you getting married even more. “aww there is the beautiful bride to be” he heard his mother say which made him look up from the ground.
now, even though you and Felix hated each other, there was no way he’d lie and say you weren’t beautiful because you were. you were one of the most beautiful people he had ever met. but that didn’t change the fact that he thought you were the most annoying person he’d ever met.
“gosh you look gorgeous” Elspeth said as you finally stood next to your parents. she pulled you into a hug and kissed your cheek. “now that you are here we can talk to you both. we know that the two of you don’t get along but we are very happy that you are going along with the arrangement. we promise you both that it will be all worth it in the end” James spoke quietly but loud enough for you all to hear. they obviously didn’t want people knowing that it was an arranged marriage.
“we will see about that dad, this is the worst day of my life” Felix said shaking his head. hearing him say that hurt you a little bit and you didn’t know why. you didn’t show the hurt on your face and you were quick with a comeback “likewise, i’d rather drown in bleach then have to marry you but here we are”
“why don’t the two of you go talk to one another about it? it might be good for you two to have an actual conversation instead of arguing all the time. go to the library, there isn’t anybody in there” Elspeth said looking between the two of you. “oh and if you see any guests and they congratulate you, please act like the two of you love each other” she added as the two of you started, asking your way to the library.
the walk to the library was silent until one of the Henry’s and his wife stopped the two of you “there is the happy couple. we have been waiting for the two of you to get together since you were young. you look gorgeous together” Henry’s wife said. your sour expression was quickly forgotten and you tried your best to show you were happy by putting the fake smile on your face.
you felt Felix’s arm go around your waist. “thank you, it didn’t take too much convincing” you said as convincing as possible. “let me see your ring dear, it must be beautiful” your eyes widened, you did not think about that at all. “it’s at the jewellers, i accidentally got the wrong size so we need to get her a temporary ring until her real one comes back” Felix was quick with his answer.
“how did you propose Felix? was it romantic?” you both nodded “very, we were on a couples holiday. we went for dinner and then we went for a walk along the beach and i just got down on one knee when i felt like the time was right” how was he so quick with these answers?
“wow, that is truly romantic. anyways, we don’t want to keep you guys for any longer. congratulations you two” with that the two of them walked toward the garden. “how the fuck did you come up with that so quickly?” you said as you both also continued walking. “dunno, i just made it up” his voice was flat and his arm dropped from your waist.
the two of you reached the library and Felix closed the door behind him. you sat on the sofa and he sat next to you awkwardly “so, how are you feeling about this situation then?” you spoke trying to stop the awkwardness. “how do you think? i’m being forced to marry a girl who i despise” he scratched the back of his neck.
“well, i’m not ecstatic about it either but, we have to do it. we just need to try and be nice to one another and i think it could work out. it’s gonna be awkward but-” he cut you off quickly “do you really think i’m gonna try work this out? with you? you must be out of your mind” he started, you didn’t like where this was going at all.
“you are the most annoying person i’ve ever met, you do realise this marriage is just to make our parents look good? there is no way i will try work this out with you. i will never like you, i will never love you. you’re just going to be a person i’m being forced to live with” you looked at him “you are unlovable. no one will ever fall in love with you, you are that frustrating. your parents probably agreed to this marriage because they know no one else will fall in love with you” his tone was harsh. hearing him say that broke you.
you could feel your eyes filling with tears which you tried to conceal as best you could but it was no use. even though you hated him his words cut deep. “that’s a really fucked up thing to say” you shook your head and got up to walk away, slamming the library door as you walked to the nearest bathroom. you could feel your chin quiver as you sniffled, trying your best to keep your tears at bay.
Felix knew that was a low blow, and he regretted his choice of words as soon as they left his mouth. he was left in the huge library, the deafening silence making him feel even worse for how he spoke to you. the two of you always threw insults at each other but nothing like that, ever.
he could tell that you were trying to make the best out of a shitty situation and he had to ruin it by overstepping the mark. he knew that he was going to have to apologise to you because he did, that time, take it too far. he spotted Theo, another butler stood at the end of the hallway. “did you see where she went?” he asked him as he shoved one of his hands in his pocket.
“she walked into the bathroom down that way sir” Theo pointed in the direction you had gone, he nodded “thanks” he started making his way to the bathroom and once he was outside the door he could hear your quiet sobs. he didn’t know what to do, he didn’t think the person he was about to comfort would be you let alone for something he said.
he knocked on the door gently, he heard your sobs stop. “who is it?” you called out, trying your best to hide the waver in your voice. “can i come in?” he questioned. he was stood outside the door for a couple of minutes before he heard you unlock the door. he walked into the bathroom and saw you sat on the floor next to the door.
he cautiously sat down next to you, not knowing how you were going to react. “look, i’m sorry for what i said. that took it too far and i am truly sorry. i’m just stressed about the situation and i took it out on you and i shouldn’t have done that” you just nodded and looked down at your lap.
he sighed, he knew that both of you would have to figure out a plan. the two of you were getting married which seemed scary to both of you and if you went through with it with out a plan it would just crumble. he spoke “so” you looked up from your lap to look at him “we need a plan” you nodded again. “how do you wanna do this?”

Hey love! if you're still accepting requests, could I get an extremely wild, rough and feral nsfw Daemon x wife fem!reader please? (feel free to ignore and sorry if the request is weird, but I'm thirsty for this handsome fictional man who unfortunately doesn't exist)
Frost Bite
Daemon Targayen x Stark!Reader
Summary: You were travelling back to home soil in anticipation of your wolf's heat cycle. Besides the fact that you could not stand the sound of your prince husband's breathing and the fact you were certain he would perish in the cold, there was one more reason why you did not want him to join you: the fact the heat was affecting you too.
Word Count: 5k+
Warnings: Basically PWP, 5k+ SMUT T_T (non-con [daemon touches her while she's asleep], virgin!reader, she cries for various reasons, fingering, choking, biting, degradation kink, corruption kink, spitting, marking, edging, oral [fem receiving], breeding kink, cream pie), RIP feminism, opens with a wet dream, brief mentions of near death experience in a snow storm, dark!daemon (but imo its just canon daemon) fem!reader, wife!Reader, soft!daemon, typos, etc.

I caught him. I caught him doing the very thing I dreaded to catch him do. The one thing I accused him of doing every night, though in my heart of hearts I wished he did not... not that I would ever admit it to his face. Because why would I? Admitting it would mean- "You want me," Daemon heaved against the neck of the woman beneath him. He cranes his neck up as he thrust into her, smirking, eyes dark, "you want this to be you," he pants as he stares at me, "don't you?" I am in my place, frozen, watching and hearing the woman come undone underneath my husband who kisses her tenderly. "Daemon," I whimper helplessly, teary eyed, "Daemon please." "Fuck off."
I jolt awake, sweat sheening my neck and chest. I turn to my bed, empty, because though Daemon insisted we sleep together and I could not fight him in his decision, he did not return to me until nigh dawn.
I wipe my face as I recall my intensifying dreams.
It seems my travels up North would come quicker than anticipated.
And as much as I wanted to tell him I told you so, oh to all the gods, how badly he deserved it, there was no time for me to gloat when Daemon did the very thing I warned him not to, fall into the icy river.
It was instantaneous. The cracking of the ice, the splashing of water, the scream that escaped me. Maybe I should have left him in the cave we kept Caraxes, who he insisted on bringing. But then again he would have insisted on joining me to the cabin, the way he insisted on joining me here up North in the first place.
And now I had to deal with the consequences of his actions.
It was sheer miracle that I got him out of the river without falling into it myself, sheer stupidity of me to rid him of his coat and offer him mine when the blistering snow storm was not relenting, and quite clearly the sheer will of the gods that both of us made it to the cabin... barely.
The moment we walked in, I shut the door and scrambled towards the fireplace. As my fingers shivered, I thought of Havoc, and how at least I know she would find mine and Daemon's corpses if ever we do not make it. I had sent her away when the storm came out of nowhere because we had to find cover for Caraxes, and she would not have been any of help to us if she were here with us anyway.
My poor pup. She would be heartbroken if she saw me frozen. And Caraxes...
I curse the flint, I curse the cold, I curse the gods, and I curse Daemon for every time I failed to light a fire. I thanked the Stranger for finally allowing me the mercy of my eventual success.
Once the fire was burning steady, I get on my feet and run to Daemon, hauling him over to the fire roughly in haste where he helpelessly kneels in front of. He could do nothing but shiver as I scramble to get some dry clothes and sheets for the both of us.
I yank him closer to the fire and begin to undress him.
Seeing as he is nothing but docile to my actions and how his skin was turning grey, I began to grow frantic, "you cannot fucking die, you prick!"
I rip his top off and quickly clothe him, "I did not go through all the trouble of marrying you for nothing. I refuse to be forced into another marriage because your stupid ass froze to death."
Daemon's shudder comes out in a thick condensation.
"Fuck," I whimper, as I struggle to get him out of his boots and breeches.
I shrivel up at the feel of his frozen fingers then brush against my arm and I shake my head rapidly, realizing there was no choice. The only way I can warm him quickly enough is if I share my own.
I strip him naked, pulling off the shirt I struggled to put on him as well, then wrap him in a fur blanket in the meantime. I then take off my own clothes and hiss at the nipping cold.
The fact Daemon does not even look at my naked form strikes a chord in me.
I straighten him up and fix the blankets on his legs and thighs before I sit on his lap. I press my bare chest against his and whimper at his dangerously concerning coldness.
He shivers against me as his face rests helplessly on my shoulder. His breath that hits my skin is not even hot.
"Remember, you're too fucking stubborn to die," I say as I wrap my legs around his torso and graciously place his fingers beneath my bottom.
His lack of warmth literally brings tears to my eyes.
I reach out for the other blanket and wrap it over myself, consequently Daemon, before I wrap my arms around him and breathe hotly against his face.
I rub his back, "will you allow irony to take you? The hot blooded prince defeated by the cold?"
He releases a shiver and moves his head. He mutters something, but his quaking body does not allow me to make sense of it.
"Do not waste your energy," I chide.
And so for a long moment, we stay like this, wrapped in each other's arms, sharing each other's heat. I do my best to warm him. I even nuzzle against him, the way Havoc did me, just so I could warm his stupid face.
Daemon finally finds it in him to lean against my touch, and when he does, he mutters under his breath, "irony-" shudder, "-would be if the- N-Northern princ-ces-s-ss died in the cold."
My face contorts and yet I cannot help but chuckle at him, glad he can sputter his nonsense again, "then I should make Caraxes burn you for your stupidity."
I shiver when I feel his icy lips kiss my neck. Goosebumps form on my skin when I feel the hot breath that follows. My hands rake up to his nape, where I then dig my fingers as I pull away.
"N-n-nno!" he stutters, hands coming around my hips to brace me tightly, "I ss-swear I'm not warm yet-t-t."
I pull back again though to face him when I said, "I only wanted to tell you," I lean my forehead against his face, "I fucking told you so, you stupid idiot."
I rest my face on his shoulder and close my eyes, knowing I would not be off him any time soon.
I dream about him. I dream about kissing his shivers away. I dream about pulling the fur blanket that separated our legs away, and riding him until he was warm.
I dream about how good he feels, and how he burns inside me. I dream about calling his name, unlike how I did in my other dreams. I was no longer calling out in betrayal, I was calling out in pleasure.
Daemon.
Daemon.
"Daemon," I trail off in a groan, willing my heavy eyelids open. I feel pressure building up inside me before I understand what's happening.
I not know how, but I am laid on a bed, head on a pillow, form still naked. Daemon is sat up beside me, peering down at me and his hands.
I whine.
His fingers-
"Oh fucking hell," he groans as his other hand begins to knead at my breasts, "you feels so good wrapped around my fingers, I-"
I cut him off with my squeak, hands flying to his arm, thighs closing shut, squeezing this hand in between my thighs.
"Daemon," the dazed quality of my voice is gone.
He tilts his head, face twisting, a challenge.
When I struggle and wrangle against him, all it takes is his hand on my throat to make me go still. I barely manage a choke and my breath continues to leave me as his fingers quicken their pace inside me.
He only releases me after I shake and shudder when I come.
It is overwhelming and nothing at all like I have dreamed or imagined, unlike all the times I've touched myself in secret. It was intense but there was a shame tied to it.
My entire body is hot and tears prick my eyes at his relentless ministrations.
"You were too fucking ready for that," Daemon mutters dryly as he quickly pulls away and shifts in his spot, "how long have you imagined fucking me, hmm?"
Before I even have the brain to do something, he crawls down the bed, "was it when you caught me touching myself to you?" He sinks down, grabbing my legs, "or have you done it before and withheld me of your sweet cunt for no fucking reason?"
All at once, he brings his face between my legs and begins to lick all the slickness off my pulsing core.
"DAEMON!" I scream, pressing my thighs close as I push myself up on my elbows, trying to break free of him.
He ignores me and forces my legs open even as I kick them in protest, "you will not deny me something you so clearly want yourself."
He grunts and pushes my legs down before grabbing my hands that were shoving him away, "you fucking bitch," he grips me tightly, "you will not find it in yourself to fight me off once I make a whore out of you."
I growl at his words, feeling my stomach drop along with my tears because of it.
I was realizing just how strong he really was, and how in moments where our arguments got a bit physical, he has probably holding back. The revelation of this does not cease my attempts at freeing myself, but it is as pointless as I feared.
Daemon rises up from his spot, nearing me, up until he is breathing against my cheek and rubbing his hardened length against my wetness.
I turn away from him, unable to really do anything else and shudder as he speaks, "you said it yourself, you did not go through all this trouble marrying me for nothing."
I screw my eyes shut, feeling tears fall, "Daemon."
He shushes me, pulling my arms up above my head, "you should not worry. I refuse to die now that I know of your lust."
I whimper as he rolls his hips against me, "still, the idea of someone claiming you- fuck-" he groans gutturally, "had I died..." he trails of in another groan, "someone else would have gotten my prize and it would have been all be your fault."
Daemon squeezes my wrist in one hand then grabs my jaw, forcing me to turn to him. I keep my eyes shut though as he heaves hotly, "I should utterly ruin every part of you so you can never have anyone but me. Though make no mistake, I would never let that happen as I so fucking breathe."
"Hypocrite," I scoff.
He laughs and I tense at the feeling of his vibrations, "she speaks."
I dare to look at him as I pant, "you do not desire me. You're just a spoiled brat who merely wants to wet his cock, just like how you do every night."
"Oh," he groans, "is this jealousy I hear?" He squeezes my cheeks, "is my pretty whore jealous that she is not the only one?"
"Fuck you!" I manage out though muffled.
Daemon laughs at the feel of tears rushing down his fingers, "do not cry, foolish wife. I'll have you know I have not wet my cock ever since I called out your name when I fucked someone else before our wedding day."
He releases my face. I attempt to even out my breath.
"I hadn't even realized until she asked me who-"
"And you think you deserve an award for that?!" I quip through my heavy breathing.
He lets out a laugh that makes me whimper, "I think you ought to know that mine own want for you has made everyone else undesirable," he licks my cheek, making me pull my head away from him, "I have been so pent up in want and for what? Because you're too bull headed to allow me anything other than my lonely hand?"
I try to wrangle out of his grip again, and he presses his whole body on me in response, "it's quite adorable that you still have it in you act like you didn't just call my name out loud while you dreamt of fucking me."
He rubs his nose against my jaw, "you wanna know how I know?"
"Fuck off-"
"You were rutting against me like a hussy," he sighs, "by the gods, had I known you were so wanton at night, I would have never granted you the insult of sleeping alone."
I could feel myself burn hotter with each word that leaves his lips despite myself. I did not want him to catch me like this, but there was no use; I was already caught.
As Daemon rocks his hips on mine, he hisses, undoubtedly feeling how much wetter I had gotten was beneath him.
"Fuck," he trails off, "here's what going to happen," he whispers, rutting against me rougher.
I cannot for the life of me withhold my whimper.
He chuckles as he presses his face against mine, "I'm going to make you come with my tongue and then I'm going to fuck you until you cry."
"Daemon, please stop-"
"Your heartbeat against my cock and how fucking wet you are disagrees with your protest, little liar," he croons. He lifts his head, then leans his forehead against mine, "don't worry, my little virgin, you will not cry because it hurts, you will cry because you'll want it so bad that it hurts."
"Daemon-"
"You will not refuse me," he whispers, though it is anything but sweet, "not when there is not a sliver of doubt in my mind that you want this too."
He brings his hands to my neck again and I wait for his grip to tighten, but it does not, "now say it."
I look up at him as my breathing quickens.
"Yield," he commands, breathing heavily all of a sudden.
I look up at him feeling my belly swirl in ways I could not ever explain.
"Admit to both our ears that you burn for me just as I have been fucking burning for you."
I yelp when he puts pressure on my throat then releases it.
"Say it," he barks.
"I-"
"Say you want me," he says softer this time.
I am disarmed by his quick change in tone and a shiver leaves me as the cold finds its way to my belly as he pulls away. Daemon releases my hands then begins to crawl down. His eyes are fixed on my as he mutters once more, "say it."
I shudder as he presses my thighs against his cheeks then whispers, almost begging, "say it."
I turn away from him and close my eyes, awaiting his next actions, for it was not like I could stop him if I refuse.
"Say it," he urges louder, "you know you want to."
I clench my jaw, "just do what you want and be done with it."
He growls, and goosebumps form on my skin when I feel him bite at the inner most part of my thigh. I grip at the sheets at the feel of teeth and tongue. I bite my lips tightly to keep myself from making any noise.
"I should, shouldn't I?" Daemon mutters.
I yelp and look down at him when his finger strokes my core.
His eyes are dark as he airily chuckles at my reaction, "after all I have given you my name, my Targaryen queen. You are no longer your own, you are forever mine."
I watch him as he lifts his head up and kisses my sopping heat. I flinch when he nips at me, drawing my nub out with his teeth. He lifts his head as he releases my flesh. His chin is glistening with my slick as he says, "I want you."
My breath leaves me when he says this.
"And I know you want me too, but I have to-- I need you to say it." He repositions himself in my thighs, "you are after all married to maniac," he breathes against me, "now, say it."
He shakes my thighs, "SAY IT!"
"I want you," I snap, "Daemon, I-" a loud cry rips out of me before I can even continue.
The sound of him lapping his tongue on me, eating me out as if I was his final meal, was somehow louder than my cries. I cannot help but so violently react to him as he devours me. He forces me still in his grip and fights off the movement of my thighs with his face.
It seems as though my admittance has reduced me into nothing but needy sounds.
Without another thought, my hands reach down at him and dig into his silver hair. I arch my back and pull at him when his tongue flicks into me.
"Fucking slut," he mutters, squeezing my thighs as he pulls me apart.
I scream out his name as he digs his face deeper into me. I lift my head up when he pulls away to laugh, "look at you, rutting against me like the needy whore you are."
I don't have time to find offence in his words because I still, not even realizing I was in fact moving my hips against him. He laughs as he continues his work, leaving me no time to feel embarrassment and only hot pleasure.
He is fucking good at what he does. He's so fucking good that my mind wanders where it should not. How much practice has he gotten to be this good? It is precisely because of this that I finally break, "all for you, Daemon," I grab his cheeks, "all for you-- all mine."
I do not see how his eyes dart up to me for I then throw my head back and whine. I feel myself come close to my undoing, "fuck, Daemon, don't stop."
I shriek when I bites me.
Just as I am inching so close, all at once, he pulls away from me.
I pant and stiffen as I hear and feel him spit on me. Much like all other moments, I do not have time to react. When I turn to him, he grabs my legs and shoves me to my side.
I begin to panic when he rises to his knees.
"I'll be fucking damned if I don't make you come on my cock right now," he grunts, making my eyes drop down to the very thing, erect, hard, and angry.
"Get on your knees, bitch," he blurts, though he doesn't give me much of a chance to as he drags me up into the position he wants me by my hips.
I haven't even propped myself up on my arms yet when he unceremoniously begins to pound into me.
I am certain if anyone could hear us in the middle of this storm, they would think I was mad, or worse, being tortured.
"I'm going to breed that prurient wolf in you, just as I'm sure your wolf, Havoc, is being bred right now."
I growl at the idea and feel my belly tighten at his words.
Daemon groans before he chuckles, "that's it, isn't it?"
His relentless thrusts begin to grow sloppy. Suddenly, he yanks me by my hair and lifts me up. His other hand slaps to my throat to offer painful support as he pulls me up against him.
I choke on my spit when my form presses against him with difficulty. He sinks down on his knees, my core wrapped around his length as he shifts me in a snug position atop him.
His hands make their way to my breasts to roughly grope them. His teeth sink down on my shoulder.
I release a wild sound as my own hands come on top of his. I am left moaning at how his mouth sinks into my skin.
Daemon makes sure to suck hard before pulling away. For a moment he catches his breath before speaking, "you did not want me here because you are affected by your wolf's heat, aren't you."
The way I begin to slowly bounce on top of him is enough of an answer to him.
He laughs as his hands depart from my tender breasts, one going down to my sensitive nub, the other sealing my throat again, "you are a fucking selfish bitch for keeping your cunt from me."
My breathing becomes arduous when he tightens his grip around me.
"You would have preferred to touch yourself to the thought of me?" he questions as he rubs on my sensitive nub.
"Daemon," I gasp, pushing my head back as his lips latch on my neck again.
He ceases the moment of his fingers as he finishes grazing on my skin. "Yes, my pretty whore?" he mutters in between his kisses, "what do you want, hmm?"
My breathing strains when his hand tightens around my throat more. I catch my breath when he releases his grip to push my hair off to the side, "tell me what you want me to do to you."
I call out his name. He calls out mine.
I find myself grabbing his hands as I moan out, "I want you to fuck me."
Without another word, I am thrown down to the bed. The only reason I'm still on him is because of his hands that latch on my hips.
I am nothing against his strength. He handles me like a ragdoll, fucking me with absolutely no regard and nothing else in mind.
I make sounds that mean nothing. His name is polluted by my whimpers and cries that you cannot make head or tail of.
I would not last any longer with how he was handling me, even if I wanted to, even if I tried.
"That's it my easy bitch," he pants, "come around me like the needy whore you are."
"Daemon-"
"Your eager cunt will take my seed well when I fill you up," his one hand leaves my hip and rips my head back by my hair again, "don't you think, pretty wife?"
"Yes," I reply without thinking, "yes, yes, yes, yes-"
"And you will give me your pups," he mutters, "bare my dragons, like a dutiful wife will you not?"
My only response is my body breaking orgasm. I shiver beneath him, falling powerless as I scream his name and crumble, absolutely boneless.
Daemon lets out a string of curses as he milks out my reaction for all he's got.
He does not waver once bit and it maddeningly delicious.
My voice hikes up when I feel him release inside me not too late after.
"Fucking come slut," he barks as he snaps his hips in me, "take it all just like that."
I bury my screams in the cushions he presses on, unrelenting. When he finally does grow sloppy, I take a moment to catch my breath and relish the feel of him.
I whimper when he pulls away and slaps my ass.
"The absolute mess you've made of yourself," he coos, as he rubs the skin he slapped.
I can feel myself leaking, I can feel it all over my legs, on the sheets, and I could practically feel his pleased smile as he watches the lewd display. I could not bring myself to care at all though, not when my legs begin to fall.
I squeak when Daemon rearranges me on the bed. He is not at all as rough as he was with me a while ago, but his strength and my lack thereof does not really allow him to be gentle.
He falls onto the side of the bed next to me and gathers me into his chest. When I roll over to him, I groan at the feeling of my wet thighs pressing together.
"Do not make issue of that," Daemon says as he watches me squirm. He pulls me close to him, arm over my shoulders. His other hand hooks behind my knee, dragging me atop him. I whimper and push my hand on his chest when I feel core empty out on his thigh.
He does not allow me to pull away and I turn to him because of this. Daemon forces me close against him, "are you so haughty over my come that you cannot bare the thought of it-"
"But it's getting everywhere," I start off loudly but end with a whisper.
Daemon's nostrils flare as he shakes his head, "I should sure hope so."
I feel my cheeks burn and so I decide to hide my face in his chest.
His laughter intensifies, and I do not enjoy how my head bounces on his ribcage because of it.
"Oh meekness suits you well, my dear."
I weakly mumble, "fuck off."
His amusement continues as he rubs my arms, "you mean, 'I want you to fuck me, Daemon.' "
"I did not say it like that!" I quip, lifting my head as I turn to him, finally making him cease his stupid laughter. The sight of his stupid smug face still glimmering in slick renders me frozen.
Suddenly I am aware of how cold the room still was.
"Pray tell, how did you say it?" he hums, pushing hair behind my ear.
I furrow my brows and press my cheek on his chest again, admitting lowly, "I didn't say your name at the end."
"My," he draws shapeless figures on my skin, "I'm glad to know the moment is burned in your very being."
"Fuck off," I mutter under my breath, scratching my eye. It dawns onto me that my face was equally as wet as Daemon's. Heat rises up my face again when I realize I really did cry because of how good he felt.
"Don't fret," he sighs, "there is a reason why you should not worry yourself about how your pretty cunt is leaking blood and come. I shall fuc-"
I turn to him in concern and push myself up.
Daemon furrows his brows and shakes his head, "it is normal," he soothes, grabbing my cheek, "or did you just forget your maidenhood was still intact after imagining fucking me?"
I am suddenly aware how real everything was. My husband has finally gotten me to consummate our marriage and all his talk of me bearing his seed could may well come true. My chest begins to constrict as my mind floods with endless scenarios.
"Well, if you start frowning like that, I might actually feel bad," Daemon mutters, lifting himself up on his elbows, "what's wrong?"
I look at his concerned expression and find myself speaking before I realize, "did you mean it?"
"Mean what?" he clarifies quickly.
"That you want me," I quip just as fast.
He stares at me for a moment, as if he was taken aback or measuring the truthfulness in my voice. When a prolonged moment passes between us, he realizes I was serious.
"Fuck," he drops his head back, "it must be exhausting to be a woman with your overthinking."
"Well, pardon me for not-"
"You are pardoned," he blurts, making me whimper when he suddenly flips us over.
I am beneath him again. He does nothing but press his weight on me, but I struggle beneath him, not enjoying the idea of remaining in an uncomfortable position.
He misreads my intentions and hinders me from moving, as he wraps his arms around me, "I just told I want you, that I burn for you, that I want you to mother my children. Do you honestly think I am one to say that to anyone?"
I gulp as he shifts to nestle his face in the crook of my neck, "I..." he breathes against my skin. He does not continue as he opts to kiss my neck instead.
When I move to wrap my own arms around him, he speaks again, "I am at your mercy. You saved me from freezing to death when you could have easily decided to rid of me."
I press my cheek against him and begin to comb through the long hair on his back, "I was serious about my distaste to remarry."
"Well, you will not," he quickly retorts, "you will have me until the end."
I bring my legs around him as I release a sigh, "consider me overjoyed by the thought."
He chuckles as he shifts, "you do not sound-"
"I did not want to admit it," I cut him off, "but I think I..." I turn to him as he lifts his head, "I think I... care for you, Daemon... I-"
"Love you," he finishes, staring at me with an unreadable expression.
And for the first time since our nuptials, he kisses me. He kisses me not because he has to, not for the sake of showing everyone present, but because he wanted to, for the sake of showing me.
He is nothing but warmth, nothing but fire, nothing but him. Daemon is not sweet, but in this moment he put even honey to shame.
He begins to stir on top me, though he makes sure his lips do not leave mine. It is because of my moan that we are broken apart, the moan that leaves me when I feel him slip inside me.
"Daemon-"
"You know how I fuck," he sighs, rubbing his nose against mine, "but now we'll both know how I make love."

heyy, I was the one that asked if you're taking requests and I'm so happy you are!!
Could I request Luke x reader, where reader stats sending him some anonymous notes (just small things to avoid being obvious) and ends up getting kinda sad when Luke is considering almost every girl in the camp except her, and the ending can be whatever you like
Hope you're comfortable with this! 🥺
Also, if you're up to make tags with anon identification can I be 🫀anon? (It's so I can find the answers to my asks faster, but it's okay if you don't want to 😊
Hope you have a nice day 👋

“For what it's worth
I did love you
And I could have said it a thousand and one times
But I wanted nothing more than for you to hear
To understand and to represent all that it meant
And I would say it again
To make it a thousand and two I do still love you
And it sure still does sound sweet
For what it's worth
I understand you
Maybe as far as you want me to
Maybe even more, but I do
And the consequences of understanding you
I didn't know would be love
Love unabashed and irreplaceable
Love that can't be replicated
A flame that didn't need to be fanned
Because how can you understand the beauty of a rose
And leave it in the garden...”
Maybe knowing it has thorns?”
Eighteen-year-old (name) has her future all planned out - spending the time at Camp Half Blood and move out of the place; attend college near the city; spend the summer in Spain.
The second I close my eyes, the memories play, and I find myself back at the beginning.
He used to be the sweetest boy in camp, but now he's not. It was sweet how he would respond to girls smiling at him. He was kind, the type of man you would want in a relationship.
He's literally the personification of a fairytale man, the way he walks the way he talks.
He's flawless.

i. The first time I secretly gave you a note
I got some paper and wrote down my feelings for him. This is the first love letter I've ever written, and the first I've sent to Luke.
When I was finished, I went in without anyone noticing, folded the paper, inserted it through the slit, and pushed it inside.
You sigh with relief. It was dumb; seriously, a love letter? He's the most gorgeous and strongest swordsman in the camp, and the only way you can confess is through an anonymous love letter??
It was sparring time, and you really enjoyed it because you could admire Luke Castellan.
What you didn't expect to see was an Aphrodite girl batting her eyelashes so hard while staring at him. She's going to fly with that eyelash of hers, you thought to yourself.
But she has courage, and you admire her for it.
Lover girl: 0
Ms steal your man (#1) : 1
Luke Castellan was still awake that night, looking at the moon, as is his usual routine, which no one knows about.
Reading the notes he found inside his locker,
"Dear Luke, I've always admired you since the first time I saw you. - ♡"
It was short, but not meaningless, because it was the first time someone gave him something to remember.

ii. 14th February - I hate you
It would've been nice if your crush noticed you. You would be lying if you said you didn't hate valentine the most.
Inside her cabin, (Name) couldn't shake the sting of loneliness on Valentine's Day.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she imagined Luke enjoying the company with other cabin girls. "Why does he always choose them over me?" she questioned, her heart heavy with unspoken emotions.
Meanwhile, in the dimly lit hallways, Luke laughed with the others, blissfully unaware of (Name)'s pain.
"Luke, why not spend some time with (Name)?" Annabeth suggested, sensing her sadness. Luke brushed it off with a casual remark, "She's fine on her own."
Back in her cabin, (Name) clenched her fists, whispering to herself, "I'm always on my own." She tried to distract herself, but every attempt failed. The distant echoes of laughter outside only intensified her solitude.
As the night deepened, (Name) heard footsteps approaching her cabin. Hope flickered, but it dimmed as she realized it wasn't Luke. A gentle knock echoed, "You okay, (Name)?"
Tears streaming down her face, she replied, "I just wanted to spend Valentine's Day with someone who actually cares."
Tumblr media
iii. I should hate you
"You should've seen (Name)'s face," one girl giggled, recounting a previous encounter. "She's such a mess."
Deep in her heartache, (Name) wished Luke would notice her suffering. "Am I not enough?" she wondered, dealing with the harsh reality of his neglect.
The cabin's walls appeared to close in as the weight of unspoken words pressed down.
Luke's laughter echoed through the night, a stark contrast to (Name)'s silent sobs.
She craved his presence, his understanding, but he remained blissfully ignorant. "I thought I meant something to him," she murmured, wiping away tears.

iv. Thank you, Annabeth
The evening sun cast a warm glow over the tranquil lake as (Name) joined Annabeth, Percy, and Grover.
Laughter and chatter filled the air as they settled by the water's edge. Annabeth, with her piercing eyes, couldn't help but notice (Name) seemed distant.
"Hey, (Name), you've been quiet. Everything okay?" she asked, concern etched on her face. (Name) sighed, her gaze fixed on the water. "Yeah, just thinking about stuff, you know?"
Percy, ever the perceptive one, chimed in, "You can talk to us. We're like family."
Grover nodded in agreement, "Totally, (Name), we're here for you."
As they enjoyed the lakeside atmosphere, Annabeth couldn't ignore (Name)'s glances toward where Luke was chatting with another girl.
She approached (Name). "Look, (Name), it's been going on for a while now. You can't keep avoiding this. You should tell Luke how you feel instead of sulking every time he talks to someone else."
(Name) tensed, her expression guarded. "It's not that simple, Annabeth. Luke and I are practically strangers."
Annabeth crossed her arms, her voice gentle yet firm. "You're like an older sister to us, and we hate seeing you upset. If you don't tell him, you'll always wonder 'what if.' Trust me, it's better to know than to wonder."
The words lingered between them, and (Name) mulled them over as they decided to take a dip in the lake. The water was cool, and the moon reflected on its surface as they swam.
Percy splashed water at Grover, starting a playful water fight. (Name) couldn't help but smile at their antics, but her thoughts still lingered on Annabeth's advice.
As they swam back to the shore, Percy asked, "Come on, (Name), join the fun! Don't let your worries ruin the evening."
(Name) hesitated for a moment before giving in, and soon laughter echoed around the lake as they played and enjoyed each other's company.

v. Realization
Luke's curiosity got the better of him when he noticed (Name) sneaking into Hermes Cabin.
As he approached her, he had a furrowed brow and a puzzled expression on his face, and the pile of small love notes in her hands revealed the secret he had unknowingly discovered.
"(Name), what are you doing here? And what's with all these notes?" Luke said.
Her cheeks flushing with a mix of embarrassment and nervousness. "Luke, I... um, well, these notes are for you. I've been leaving them hoping you will read them"
Luke's eyes widened in realization, understanding crossing his features.
Luke said teasingly. "You're the one behind these notes? Why keep it a secret?"
Glancing everywhere but at him, you replied "you hangout with different girls everyday what makes you think I have the courage to confess?"
Luke's expression softened as he processed (Name)'s confession. The air between them thickened.
"You don't have to hide, (Name). Your notes brought joy to my days. Knowing it's you only makes them more special."

vi. The prophecy
“Luke—”
“Good-bye, Percy. There is a new Golden Age coming and you won’t be part of it.”
He slashed his sword in an arc and disappeared in a ripple of darkness.
The scorpion lunged.
I swatted it away with my hand and uncapped my sword. The thing jumped at me and I cut it in half in midair.
I was about to congratulate myself until I looked down at my hand. My palm had a huge red welt, oozing and smoking with yellow guck. The thing had gotten me after all.
My ears pounded. My vision went foggy. The water, I thought. It healed me before.
I stumbled to the creek and submerged my hand, but nothing seemed to happen. The poison was too strong. My vision was getting dark. I could barely stand up.
Sixty seconds, Luke had told me.
I had to get back to camp. If I collapsed out here, my body would be dinner for a monster. Nobody would ever know what had happened.
My legs felt like lead. My forehead was burning. I stumbled toward the camp, and the nymphs stirred from their trees.
“Help,” I croaked. “Please . . .”
Two of them took my arms, pulling me along. I remember making it to the clearing, a counselor shouting for help, a centaur blowing a conch horn.
Then everything went black.
Oh gods, "Annabeth-" (name) voice breaks the silence.
"I know (name) I know" She replied.
...
“You idiot,” Annabeth said, which is how I knew she was overjoyed to see me conscious. “You were green and turning gray when me and (name) found you. If it weren’t for Chiron’s healing . . .”
The room was quiet when Percy told them the story.
It was quiet for a long time.
“I can’t believe that Luke...” Annabeth’s voice faltered. Her expression turned angry and sad. “Yes. Yes, I can believe it. May the gods curse him.... He was never the same after his quest.”
“(name) can you believe what he just did?!” Annabeth said.
"I don't.. but seeing Percy like this oh my gods... I'm so sorry Perce"
Maybe I was dumb for not noticing you were plotting to betray us.
See you on the other side, Luke Castellan.

────────────
It is the middle of summer and the sun was blazing unforgivingly over you that not even your sunshade could help you escape from the heat.
You look at your friends over the rim of your sunglasses, as some of them currently play around in the water. The radio stations all reported well above average numbers for the coming weeks and so naturally your friends would want to go on vacation somewhere near the beach.
Originally you had nothing special planned for the summer, but since your best friend Sofía is dating Fernando González, who just happens to be the older brother of Pedri González, Barcelona's young star-midfielder, you somehow happened to get dragged along to Ibiza.
This wasn't a rare occasion, because ever since Sofía started dating Fernando, you ended up with this whole new lifestyle consisting of football matches, special events, galas and travel.
And with FC Barcelona winning LaLiga and the season ending, all the players want to make the most off their freetime.
"Fer wants to book the tickets, __, you're coming with, right?", Sofía asked you last week. It was super spontaneous and honestly you were a bit annoyed that you got asked so late, giving you no time to prepare or clear your schedule (not that you had much written on it anyways lol)
But you would also lie if the idea of going to Ibiza didn't excite you. You always wanted to go to the infamous "party" island, but it was a costy dream - one you couldn't afford. Well, until now.
So you agreed and found yourself only 5 days later at your dream destination. One of the perks of having a friend like Sofía is that with trips like these, you didn't have to pay a cent. As a close friend, the whole thing basically got financed for you. Only shopping expenses and maybe food you had to cover yourself - of course.
The single downside of it all was the fiancier of it all himself: Pedri.
Ironic, right?
But there was no way you couldn't feel that way towards him. He is simply infuriating. When the two of you were introduced to each other over dinner at their home, Pedri wasted no time trying to subtly smooth his way into your pants.
It was almost unnoticeable to be honest and you know no one paid attention, but you did. You noticed how his arm brushed your shoulder, how his hand grabbed your waist when he wanted to move past you and his hips grazed your ass. It seemed like his eyes were glued to your cleavage and somehow no one took notice.
In his defense though, you weren't a saint either. Where he pulled, you just let yourself get tugged along. When he moved past, you purposely arched your back; just to test the waters and pushed out your chest to maybe rile him up a bit; you don't know really.
There was something entertaining about an attractive guy like Pedri showing his interest for you so blatantly and pursuing you in such a secretive way.
Yet for all it's worth, you never went further than touching and looking, sneaking a kiss here and there. It's clear what type of guy Pedri is, if all the buzz around his rather promiscuous love life, filled with influencers and models, is any indication.
You heard what people said, what the articles reported. Pedri is young, rich and successful, he would be a fool to immediately pursue a serious relationship at that stage in his life. He liked to enjoy life, be wild in his early 20s and keep the monogamy for later.
And it's not like you could blame him, honestly. You're sure that if your roles were switched, you would enjoy his lifestyle too to an extent. You are you though.
And you wanted something serious, someone to treat you with respect and loyalty. Surely, Pedri saw you more as a way of passing time, just having his fun with you. But you had enough self-respect to not give in to his troublsome ways.
Also, you barely had the nerves to put up with all that.
That's what you liked to tell yourself at least.
With a sigh you turn your head to where Sofía suddenly sits up. You're about to close your eyes again, ready to fall under the sun's mercy, when you hear your best friend scoff next to you.
You bring your sunglasses up and follow her sight. "Can you fucking believe that?", she says agitated.
A loud giggle errupts and you watch as two girls talk animatedly with both Fernando and Pedri.
The brunette one subtly scratches over Fernando's arm, as she seems to listen intently to whatever he's saying. Fer doesn't really engage her, keeps his visible distance, though Sofía doesn't seem to care. Her eyes shoot daggers in their direction.
What bothers you though was the blonde one clinging like a koala onto Pedri. She seems so....you can't find the word but it irritates you. And he did absolutely nothing about it, actually rather enjoying it. Not that he shouldn't of course, but he could keep his distance as well. Also, you didn't want to have to deal with two horny people during your vacation (one you didn't pay for but you get the gist), and an angry best friend, if they were to stay.
It also doesn't help that Pedri looks the way he does. Absolutely gorgeous.
You never thought to be admitting to this but he almost looks like sex-on-legs in those red swim shorts of his. The sun burned his skin in the most beautiful way possible, accentuating his natural blush and his slim but toned body. It's been nothing but torture the entire day.
The two of you watch them for another minute, none of the brothers noticing any of your hard stares, when Sofía stands up determined. "If he wants to play, I'll play."
When she notices your indifferent state, she looks at you expectantly.
"What?", you ask.
"Come on, I can't do this alone."
Reluctant you get up as well and shake non-existent sand off your legs. "I don't know Sof...Fer doesn't really seem too into it."
She cocks an eyebrow and the expression on her face says enough for you to not press any further.
"Yeah, yeah alright.", you say. You don't know what plan she has in mind exactly but you follow her anyway. You get increasingly confused when she proceeds to take her bag and go to the changing rooms. She closes the door behind you and rummages in her bag and only when she pulls something out, you realize the absolute stupid plan she has.
No, you don't think even scriptwriters could come up with such silly ideas.
"I cannot believe you."
In her hands are, what you believe to be, the flimsiest bikini pieces you have ever seen.
"I always pack a pair or two for emergencies.", she says and gives you a pair. A red brazilian bikini, the ones with high-cut strings. "And as you can see, this is an emergency."
You hold the garments up. "I thought Fer doesn't like you wearing those, why did you pack them for emergencies?", you ask confused.
Fernando is a sweetheart. You really think there could have been no one more perfect for your best friend than him. He's not controlling, always puts her first and you genuinely believe that he always has her best interests in mind. Fer is not the type to forbid Sofía anything, especially not in regards of clothes. He let's her wear whatever she wants, no matter how short or ridiculous it looks. However, for some reason, he has often voiced his strong dislike towards those brazilian bikini bottoms that recently started trending.
It didn't bother Sofía at all, she didn't really wear them often anyways. But you guess she never got rid of them either.
"Precisely that's why. Also, they tan better.", she says as she takes out a white pair for herself. You don't think she really understood your question and you make a point to ask her later. For now though, you have another problem at hand.
"Ok ok, so you try to rile him up one way or the other. I get it. But why do I have to wear one as well?"
Sofía looks at you like it's so obvious and you're dumb for even asking, "Because there's two of those skanks? We can drive one off, but as long as the other stays, none of them will leave."
Your brows shoot up and you groan frustrated at what this means. "Oh come on, Pedri is not that bad.", Sofía reasons.
If only she knew, you thought. You want to protest but you think back to the blonde girl that threw herself onto Pedri and something bad bubbles up in your stomach.
With new determination you two change and make your way back to the beach. Sofía looks gorgeous in the bikini and for all it's flimsiness you think it suits you pretty good as well. Okay, who are you kidding. It looks fucking sexy on you, hugging you in all the right spots and making your ass look extra perky.
And you know you're not the only one who thinks so, as you feel the eyes of several men and women alike on both of you.
It gets even more apparent when two certain brothers look your way. Comically enough, the two girls shamelessly joined them on your sunbeds. By now your other friends joined as well and Sofía walks in front of you to where the others are; pointedly ignoring Fernando's presence.
You aren't as strong-willed though and can't help but sneak a look at Pedri. He already looks back at you, a smirk playing on his lips as his eyes scan your entire body.
You immediately turn your head back, feeling your cheeks heat up stupidly enough, despite the weather, and sit next to Miguel.
"Ohh, what's the occasion?", Samuel whistles when you two settle down.
Sofía shrugs and you feel uncomfortable with all eyes on you. It becomes worse when the conversations stop as well suddenly and Fer stands up. "Why did you change?"
"Felt like it. Also we can tan better now.", Sofía says indifferent.
He frowns, "But you looked pretty before." Bless his heart you think.
Sofía ignores him, and you think she's going a bit too far but it's not your relationship to intervene. "Samuel can you help put sunscreen on my back, I can't quite reach it."
The flabbergasted look on Fernando's face was both priceless and heartbreaking to see and you slowly begin feeling bad.
"What?"
"Sure."
Both answer at the same time and you grimace at the awkwardness. Fer goes and grabs the bottle out of her hands, the pretty brunette completely forgotten already. "What do you think you're doing?"
"I don't know what you mean."
He turns to the rest of you with an apologetic but upset expression, "Will you excuse us for a moment?"
He proceeds to take Sofía to a more quiet place on the beach. You see them argue in the distance but ultimately decide that for now it's not your business anymore.
Samuel and Loréna already went back into the water, Pedri is occupied with the two girls and only Miguel was with you.
The sun hasn't gotten any less warm and now that you wore this criminal bikini, you could at least put it to good use, right? So you take the sunscreen and hold it out to Miguel. "Can you?", you say pointing to your back.
It takes him a moment to understand what you mean, but when he does, he nods and reaches out but someone else happens to be faster than him. "Let me do it."
You look into Pedri's honey eyes.
Next to you, the blonde girl scoffs and regards you with an angry face. Miguel leaves as well and you want to say something to stop him, begging him not to leave you alone, but Pedri beats you to it. "Turn around and lay down." His voice is firm and it unwillingly sends shivers down your spine.
And for some reason you listen.
Your stomach retracts slightly when your belly touches the cold sunbed. But you forget everything the moment the cool sunscreen touches your skin and Pedri begins spreading it.
It's too sensual for your liking and he's gentler than you thought. Pedri goes all the way up to your neck, massaging the spot thoroughly and when he slowly goes down, his hands reach under your bikini top. Embarrassingly enough, pleasure fills your lower stomach.
Yet, you don't know what overcomes you, but attraction makes you do stupid things, so you simply reach behind your back and open the knot. "It'll be easier.", you explain with a small voice.
You get an answer in the form of his hands, when Pedri touches the exact spot and slowly glides his hands to your sides. His index fingers barely graze the sides of your boobs and goosebumps erupt all over your body.
If Pedri notices, he doesn't say anything.
Instead he just continues spreading the cream all the way to your lower back, his fingers once again invading places he shouldn't, much to your own excitement though.
It's quiet the entire time, you barely register Miguel talking with the two abandoned girls and going away with them. Light chatter and laughs, the splashing of water and the moist sound of Pedri spreading the sunscreen are the only audible things around you.
But you should know by now that it's only a matter of time before Pedri decides to ruin peaceful moments.
"Need me to put some on your ass as well?"
Shameless is the only word good enough to describe the football player. "In your dreams maybe.", you say and turn your head to watch him through your glasses.
His eyes are glued to your backside, "Oh if only you knew, princess."
You bind your bikini top back together and sit up, "You're stupid, González."
"For you, yeah."
You resist the urge to punch him and ignore the fact that it affects you more than what is condemned good. "Will you stop?"
"Why, do I make you nervous?"
You cross your arms over your chest, his eyes immediately zoning in on the movement. You (un)consciously press them together tighter, for no particular reason.
"No."
"Really?", he extends the 'e' sound and leans forward. Not expecting him to, you automatically fall back. He grabs the edge of the sunshade and pulls it down until it completely hides the two of you.
"What are you doing, they'll see us!"
Pedri chuckles and you can't help but peak at his pink lips, only inches away from yours now. "That's what you're worried about?"
"What else?" You think maybe the heat has gotten to your head, but really it's just Pedri's presence on top of you.
You see the way Pedri's mouth opens, ready to continue the banter but with his entire body pressed into yours, his natural scent mixed with the sea, his honey eyes boring into yours and exploring your entire face and his hands itching on your hips, you do the only thing possible in this situation.
You grab his neck and smash your lips against his.
He responds immediately, reciprocating the kiss. You hate how good it feels and despite how confusing it is with him, no moment has ever been clearer than right now.
A whine leaves your mouth when Pedri presses his hips into yours, the pleasure inmessurable. It's an indecent thing to do at a public beach (even though this is a private part of the beach Pedri specifically rented for the vacation) so he pulls back but right now you can't care at all.
All rationality leaves your body when you grab his red shorts by the hem and pull him back. You cling your legs around his back thighs and butt.
"Woah there, sugar, slow down.", he laughs, while caringly pushing a loose strand of hair out of your face.
Honestly, you would be flustered in any other moment but this. You can't think straight, the need to have him currently overweighting any other feeling.
His left hand slides from your waist to your ass, massaging the flesh. His other hand is clasped around your jaw, keeping your lips firm against ist.
You lose yourselves in the moment, Pedri's left hand close to where you need it the most. It's embarrassing how easy his fingers manage to slip under your bikini. And when he touches your clitoris, you're on cloud nine.
Your hands wander down to his beautiful red shorts and waist no time to wrap around his dick.
He groans into the kiss, "Fuck."
You begin moving your hand up and down and that's when all the weight on top of you suddenly disappears. "Shit, I hate to be the one, but we-"
"Yeah, I know.", you immediately cut him off and organize yourself a bit. Your head spins a bit, everything going too fast for you. Your body and mind haven't completely sobered up yet, and it stings a bit to be turned down like this. It's also confusing. But he's right.
Pedri seems to read you well enough by now, when he says, "It's not because I don't want to."
You hold up your hand, not ready for any kind of rejection, "I'm not dumb, Pedri. This is the fucking beach." Yet you wonder if he would have gone further if it was the pretty blonde and not you.
He goes through his hair and laughs, "Not because of that. My brother is coming and I don't think now is the time to explain ourselves, is it?"
You immediately spin around and indeed, Fernando and Sofía are walking in your direction; hand-in-hand, you might add. Luckily they seem too focused on one another and their ice cream to notice you and Pedri.
When you turn back, Pedri winks at you. "I'll choose a more private place next time."
You scoff, "There will be no next time."
He rubs his chin thoughfully and looks at you in an actingly confused way, "The way you were going at it, I could have sworn you were down for another- Ow!"
You hit Pedri angrily, the redness on your face surely visible, "Don't ever mention that again."
"And what if I do?", he smirks cockily.
"Pedri!"
"__!", he imitates in a high voice and this time you can't help but laugh. You roll your eyes playfully and shove him away. It gets increasingly hard to not crush on him. Maybe you already do.
The sunshade moves then and Fer and Sofía hop next to you two.
"Nice to see that you two love birds made up, I was beginning to worry.", you comment and Sofía lovingly puts her head on Fer's shoulder.
You four chat around a bit more, when Fernando suddenly chuckles and points at you and Pedri. Confused, you both look at him.
"You two look more like a couple than we do. Did you notice that you're matching?"
You did, in fact, not notice. And neither it seems, did Pedri.
You make a gaggig noise then and shoot up, "Whatever, I am going to change."
Pedri follows close behind, "Want me to help?"
"Shut up!"

Dina’s sudden reappearance in your life was turning into one of the best things you had going on. When you were done with work, instead of loitering about Joel’s home and hoping to run into Ellie, you’d knock on Dina’s front door and spend your afternoons gossiping and trading stories.
She never asked so explicitly about Ellie again, but you could tell that occasionally she wanted to.
“Guess whose birthday it is this weekend?” asked Dina one day in late April. The Wyoming sun was hung high in the sky, and the weather was steadily becoming warmer. The temperature was stuck at a breezy 60, and a part of you wondered just how hot it would get over the summer.
Terranova rarely ever got over 70 degrees. Would it be hotter than that? Would you even be here to see it?
“Yours?” you guessed casually, pushing away the ever-present question of how long you’d really be in Jackson.
Dina snorted. “No. Not quite. You just missed mine, actually. I’m a December baby.”
“Jesse?”
“No.”
“Joel?”
“Nope.” Her mouth popped on the p.
Your heart thudded. “Uh—Ellie?”
Her face split into a wide grin. “Yes! It’s her 20th. Isn’t that crazy? She’s ancient.”
“Wow!” you said, coaxing faux enthusiasm into your voice.
You and her had kept seeing each other at night, long after Joel had turned in. It always proceeded like clockwork—she’d come knock at your door, you’d fall into her bed, and then you’d leave.
You’d thankfully avoided any of the embarrassing stuff that you’d done the second night—no more unnecessary sensual face touching and whispers of her being a good person. You wanted to, though. There was so much that you ached to tell her, so many words that threatened to spill from your lips that you just barely managed to keep at bay.
The worst part was the way that nothing had really changed between you two beyond what transpired every few evenings in her room. Each morning, you’d wake up knowing that you were in for another day of pretending like she didn’t know what it sounded like when you whined and begged and told her where to touch you. Like you didn’t know how her mouth tasted.
“I want to get her a present,” Dina was saying. “I do something for her every year, but I want this birthday to be a little different—given that she’s made it two decades and all, you know.”
“That’s really thoughtful of you.”
Dina’s eyes sparkled. “I know! Do you want to help? If you do, I’ll tell her it’s from you, too.”
“Actually,” you said, wheels in your head turning, “That would be amazing. I have no idea what I’d get her otherwise.”
“Great.” Dina leaned back, nabbing her backpack from the ground and fishing through it until she produced a map. She unfolded it and began gesturing over the marks. “I found an abandoned bookstore in this area outside of the wall.” She tapped on a dot that she’d made, situated a fair ways away from the wall and on the opposite side of the town as the dam.
“So we’re going shopping?”
Dina laughed. “Yeah. 5 finger discount, too. The only problem is that we might need to kill some baddies to qualify, but once we clear our way, it’s home free.”
“Right,” you said, fear creeping into your bones at the thought of having to fight off the infected. You’d only been on a few patrols since you’d been shot, and each had been totally unnoteworthy. You’d yet to actually shoot your gun at anything. “You—you do know that I’m not actually that good of a patrol partner, right?”
“Don’t worry about it,” said Dina, waving her hand dismissively. “I can take care of us. Plus, we haven’t seen infected in this area for a while. This is a pretty remote area—tough to reach unless you know what you’re looking for.”
“So, when are we going?”
A glimmer appeared in her eye. “Now?”
~
“Where are you going?”
Ellie stood, her arms crossed as she leaned against the opposite wall. You were grabbing your patrol things, slinging your backpack over your shoulders and pulling on the gray sweatshirt she’d given you.
“Out with Dina,” you said, slightly breathless from moving so quickly. You hadn’t been expecting Ellie to be home—normally she was keeping herself busy picking up extra patrol shifts and helping Joel. It had been an unwelcome surprise to run into her, sour faced and serious while you were trying to get ready.
“Out where?”
You shrugged, trying your best to look nonchalant. “Dina said she wanted to show me something.”
She was silent as you finished lacing up your shoes, but you could see her watching you from the corner of your eyes.
“I’ll be back in time for tonight, if that’s what you’re worried about,” you offered snidely, hardly realizing what you’d said until it had left your lips. It had been a low blow. It had been nasty. You weren’t sure why you’d said it.
“That’s not—” She rubbed the bridge of her nose with her fingers. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know.” You stood up, feeling deflated. “Sorry. I don’t know why I said that.”
Ellie sent you a tight smile. “It’s fine.”
You walked back to Dina’s feeling heavy. That was how most of your interactions with Ellie seemed to go nowadays—awkward, stiff, and remarkably unfriendly. You weren’t sure what changed. And she was still fucking you, which didn’t make much sense.
Sometimes it felt like she was distancing herself on purpose. But that had to be wrong, because why would she do that? You obviously liked her. She wasn’t the one at risk of being hurt.
You and Dina took off by foot as the sun began to set, well-armed with both weapons and navigational equipment. Well—Dina was, at least. All you had was the small gun Ellie had given you. Dina was doing all of the heavy lifting.
The forest was quiet, interrupted only occasionally by songbirds and the sound of wind rustling through the leaves. Spring had hit Jackson suddenly, the underbrush exploding in volume and flowers blooming everywhere.
As you two walked through the woods, chattering mindlessly and generally enjoying each other’s company, you made a mental reminder to return to the forest to pick up a makeshift bouquet of flowers. Ellie didn’t seem like the type to swoon over things like that, but even the most unromantic people could recognize the gesture of flowers. You were sure she’d at least put them in a vase.
Eventually the path Dina was leading you on opened up to a heavily overgrown street, a small decrepit strip mall hidden away in the shrubbery.
“Here!” said Dina cheerily. She jogged forward, scrubbing the moss off of the door to show a book icon on the filthy glass.
“And you said that there’s no infected here?” you asked, your fingers wrapped nervously around your gun.
“Of course I did,” said Dina. “Do you think I’d take you somewhere that was infested?”
The glass shattered as a body came crashing through the door, thrashing and clicking in a mass of bloody limbs as it took Dina to the ground.
Your finger squeezed the trigger before you could think, sending a spray of gore into the air as Dina forced the thing off of her and stood, panting.
There wasn’t even a chance to breathe. A piercing shriek cut through the air before three more followed the first, not paying any mind to the jagged edges of the broken door that grabbed at their mutilated skin.
“Fuck!” Dina’s knife went swinging through the air, slicing and jabbing at the creatures in front of you. They fell in quick succession, but there was more rustling and screaming from inside. Far too much rustling. “Run!”
She didn’t have to tell you twice. Despite the fact that you’d never been a track star in school, you bolted quicker than you’d even known possible. Your backpack banged against your back as you sprinted down the road, ducking into the brush and making a break for it with Dina right on your tail.
The walk there had taken close to 30 minutes. Your sprint cut that in over half. You and Dina ran in stride, with her lagging behind to send off a few shots to ground the runners that were quick enough to keep up. The clearing you appeared in all the way back in the winter flashed by you in a second, and within another few moments, you were both resting against the wall, chests heaving as you both picked off the stragglers that had come out of the forest to investigate.
By the time the last gunshot rang out and the final infected slumped to the ground, you were shaking uncontrollably, your gun vibrating in your hand.
“Shit, I’m so sorry,” said Dina, equally breathless though significantly more composed as you two walked through the entrance, getting concerned looks from the people who were manning the gate. “I’ve never seen so many in that store before. I don’t understand. It was clear the last time I went.”
Before you could respond, someone stepped into your eye line.
“What the fuck did you do,” seethed Ellie. Her eyes were wild, her lip curled in a manner so derisive you began to wonder if you’d ever actually seen her angry before this.
“Chill, Ellie,” said Dina. “Y/N and I were just going to try and pick something up for your birthday. There were…a few more than what I was expecting. But it’s fine. We handled them. She did great.”
Ellie looked at you then, and you could feel her taking you in. Her eyes rested with accusation at the way that your hands were trembling. “You’re so fucking stupid, Dina. You knew that she’s never done this before. What the fuck is wrong with you, taking her out like that?”
“It was clear the last time I was there!” Dina spoke with her hands, waving them through the air in emphasis.“There wasn’t supposed to be any. I don’t know what to tell you. I didn’t purposefully try to get us killed.”
Ellie sent her another scathing look before turning her attention to you. “And don’t even get me started with you.”
You blinked. “What?”
“What the fuck were you thinking?!” she snapped.
Dina sent you a wink and disappeared down the street in the direction of her house.
“I was thinking of your birthday, actually,” you said delicately. “We were going to get you something from the bookstore.”
“That is not an excuse to go get yourself killed!”
You held up your hands in mock surrender, which looked really stupid considering how hard you were still trembling. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t the original plan. Can we not do this right now? I’m still trying to, uh, process what happened.”
As if to punctuate your point, the next step you took nearly sent you to the ground, your knees wobbling.
Ellie’s hands were at your sides in an instant, solid and steadying against you as you regained your balance.
“Sorry,” you said again, lower this time.
“How many?” Ellie asked. Her voice was softer now, almost resigned. She hadn’t let go yet.
“I don’t know,” you admitted. “After the first three or four, I lost count. They just kept—” You winced at the memory of the wet sound that they made hitting the ground. “They just kept coming.”
“You did them a favor,” said Ellie, stepping back and to your side as you began to walk forward. Her hand stayed posed on your forearm. “It gets easier.”
“I don’t know if I want it to get easier,” you confessed.
“Well, how about you start by never doing something that fucking stupid again.” Her words lacked any venom. “Don’t you ever go out without me again, okay? Do you have any idea what could’ve happened to you?”
You gave your trembling hands a look. “I can take a guess.”
Ellie walked you back to Joel’s house, helping you out of your jacket and unsubtly checking your skin for bites. Or at least that’s what she said she was doing. She couldn’t seem to stop touching you.
You headed back up to your room to get changed as Ellie shut the front door and was off to finish her work with Tommy. As you leisurely made your way down the hallway, you noticed that something was off—the hallway closet was slightly ajar.
The memories of your first night there came floating back to you, images of Ellie shutting the door before you could see inside emerging to the forefront.
It wouldn’t hurt to look, would it? It was probably nothing.
Your hand wrapped tentatively around the handle, pulling the door open so slowly that the old, rusty hinge fell silent.
It wasn’t what you were expecting. It wasn’t what you were expecting at all.
It wasn’t really a closet—there were a few shelves, but no hangers. In their place, there were stacks of textbooks with old, dated covers of the stars, planets, and physics. The back wall was plastered with drawings of constellations and calculations in Ellie’s messy scrawl, reminiscent of the leftover scrap paper from when you sat your physics exams and did your problem sets.
The memory of Ellie staring at your textbook re-emerged to hit you with full force. No wonder she was interested in it. THIS is what she was going to say that she wanted to study when you’d asked her.
A slow smile crept onto your face as you thought about her upcoming birthday.
You knew what you were getting her now.
~
Preparing for Ellie’s surprise party was a full day’s worth of work. You and Dina had convinced Maria to give Ellie enough things to do that she’d stay out of the house for the majority of the afternoon. You felt kind of guilty that Ellie was being put to work on her birthday of all days, but Dina just shook her head.
“It’s Ellie,” she said. “She lives to act all macho and patrol and shit. This is probably an extra present to her.”
You two had located some flour, sugar, eggs, and butter and were hard at work baking a cake. It was tough going without a real recipe, but you’d grown up with a mother who loved baking, so you tried to do it from memory.
The result was a rather lopsided looking monstrosity that you and Dina had attempted to salvage through the liberal application of the thin icing you’d managed to whip up using milk and powdered sugar. It didn’t work, and you two didn’t wait long enough for the cake to cool before frosting it, so it melted in puddles and made the cake soggy.
“Fantastic work,” said Dina, wiping her hands on her front as you two surveyed the final product. “Really incredible, Y/N. You should really consider a career change.”
“Shut up,” you said, snorting. “Ellie’s gonna hate this.”
“She’s going to think it’s hilarious,” Dina corrected. “I’m sure it can’t taste too bad, right?”
You shivered. “Don’t say that.”
The decorations and gathering of presents were thankfully an easier challenge, and before you knew it Joel’s living room was fixed up to look obnoxious as possible, with a tacky “HAPP BIRTHDAE ELLIE” strung up in blood red reflective plastic (you two couldn’t find any Ys) above the fireplace. “Happy 5th Birthday!” balloons filled the ceiling, their gaudy purple color clashing horrifically with the red of the lettering.
“This is just awful, Dina,” you said. “Ellie’s never going to speak to us again.”
“You need to chill,” Dina responded. “She might act grumpy all of the time, but I know her, and I know she’ll secretly like this.”
7 rolled around quickly, and with it came the guests.
First was the unsurprising Jesse, grinning and carrying a satchel that had a makeshift card attached to the top labeled “Ellie”.
Next came Astrid, Bonnie, and Greg—all of the patrolmen that were roughly around your age. You hadn’t spent all that much time with them, but they’d always been fun.
Last came a girl you’d never seen before.
“Hi!” she said, extending a hand and looking at you through a fringe of choppy black hair.
“Hi!” you said, taking her hand and shaking it once. “I’m Y/N.”
“I know,” she said, her eyes crinkling. “I’m Cat.”
“I can’t believe you two haven’t met before,” said Dina, swooping in to stand beside you. There was something written on her face—something that looked kind of like worry.
“I can’t either!” you said good-naturedly. “How do you know Ellie?”
Dina cringed.
Cat just smiled wider. “Oh. Ellie and I go way back.”
“Cat, why don’t you go help me in the kitchen? I need to finish plating some stuff,” said Dina.
“Sure!” Cat sent you one more winning smile, following Dina with a bounce in her step.
Something felt deeply off about that interaction, but you couldn’t quite put a finger on what it was. You’d never seen Dina so eager to get you away from someone. Maybe it’d just been a coincidence?
You didn’t get a chance to dwell on it further, because Ellie was opening the door.
“Surprise!” Everyone in the living room yelled upon seeing her.
Ellie blanched, her eyes landing on you for a moment before she cast her gaze to the rest of the room. “What’s this?”
“Your birthday party,” said Dina, appearing from the kitchen with a plate of crackers and other appetizers, Cat in tow. “You didn’t think we were just going to let you turn 20 without embarrassing you just a little bit?”
“Those are the most hideous balloons I’ve ever seen,” said Ellie, crossing her arms.
“Thanks,” you said, beaming. “I picked them out myself.”
Much to your surprise, her lips lifted until she was smiling back. “You’re such a loser.”
“Okay!” said Dina, clearing her throat and stepping in between you two. “You two can flirt later. I’ve been slaving away in the kitchen for an entire day. Let’s eat.”
You shut your mouth, blushing uncontrollably as your eyes lifted. Ellie’s cheeks looked uncharacteristically pink and her eyes were fixed on your shoes.
Dinner went by quickly, with everyone trading odd stories about patrolling and their life before Jackson. You learned that Dina had actually been born in New Mexico and that Astrid was from Oregon. You heard all about how Jesse and Greg came across an old mall a few miles out of Jackson that was so full of infected that they could hear them scratching at the doors and clicking even before they were within eyesight of the building. You told some stories about your life in Terranova, about studying and your family.
“What the fuck is this?” asked Ellie once Dina had reappeared, carrying your sorry excuse of a birthday cake. Time had not treated it well. The first layer was almost entirely slid off, and the cake looked damp from the melted icing.
“It’s your birthday cake,” you said. “We, uh, tried. I don’t have a cake recipe memorized, and it was harder than I expected.”
The candles Dina attempted to stick into the cake kept falling out, the structural integrity so weakened from the melted frosting that chunks were coming off.
“Let’s just pretend that there’s 20 candles,” said Dina finally once the top layer of the cake finally split in half.
“Right,” said Ellie, snorting.
Dina led a very enthusiastic rendition of the Happy Birthday song that ended in cheers and hollers as Ellie dramatically lowered her head to the cake and pretended to blow the “candles” out.
No one touched the cake, but you couldn’t blame them.
Next came presents. Jesse went first, giving Ellie a satchel that held a bunch of cleaning equipment for her patrol rifles. Dina had found a t-shirt that said “Enemy of the State” in goofy comic sans lettering, and Ellie was unsuccessful in holding back her giggles at seeing it.
“Dina, this is so stupid,” she said, but there was no venom in her tone, just amusement.
It was your turn next, so you leaned across the table to place the small box in front of her.
“Please tell me you didn’t almost die getting this one,” said Ellie, giving you a suspicious look.
“Not at all,” you said. “I accidentally brought it from Terranova.”
Her nimble fingers untied the flimsy ribbon you’d haphazardly wrapped around the tiny brown box, lifting the lid off and peering inside.
“It’s a…rock?” Ellie frowned, pulling it out and holding it in her hand.
“You got her a rock for her birthday?” Cat asked you from her position to your right, her eyebrows raised.
“It’s not just a rock,” you said. “It’s a moon rock. Like, from the moon.”
Ellie froze, her eyes saucers as she stared at the rock balanced in her palm. “What?”
“I told you I studied astrophysics,” you said casually. “One of my professors let me borrow it because my research supervisor wanted to take a look at it, so it was in my bag. And I never had the chance to give it to him, obviously. So it’s yours now.”
“Holy fuck.” She turned in over, her fingers running across the surface. “This is…wow. Oh my god.”
“That’s so cool, dude,” Jesse said. “Like, insane. I didn’t even know that those were a thing.”
“There’s only a couple in the world,” you added. “And even fewer that are still reachable. The rest are…well, out here somewhere. Terranova only has a few from our own expeditions and the professors who managed to grab what they had when they moved.”
“This one’s from me,” said Cat, leaning forward and placing an envelope in front of Ellie. “It’s not as cool as a moon rock, but I thought you’d like it.”
Her fingers slid under the tongue of the envelope, ripping it open and pulling a piece of paper out.
“Good for one more free tattoo,” Ellie read out.
Cat sat back, looking awfully pleased with herself.
“Cat was the one who gave Ellie the one on her arm,” Dina explained to you.
A memory pricked at your consciousness, dating back to your first patrol with Ellie.
An ex had given her the tattoo on her arm.
The girl who had given her tattoo was Cat.
Cat was her ex.
That makes so much sense you realized with horror as you remembered how Cat had told you so confidently that she and Ellie went way back. Of course they did. They used to date.
“Where’d you go?” asked Dina, bumping your shoulder.
“Sorry,” you said, rubbing the bridge of your nose. “Just, uh, tired.”
When you looked up, Ellie’s eyes were on you, her lips slightly quirked.
You looked away, instead focusing on the placemats that Dina had set out. Cat was so different from you—so peppy, so confident, so loud. No wonder Ellie didn’t want anything more than what you had now. Whatever Ellie had seen in Cat had nothing to do with you.
The night ended with you all sitting on the couches in the living room with Dina mixing drinks so strong that you were wondering if she was trying to kill you.
“Jesus Christ, Dina,” you said as you watched her pour. “What is that? 90 percent vodka?”
“I prefer to call it efficient,” Dina corrected.
It burned going down your throat and you fought back a cough as you placed your glass back on the coffee table. Ellie was right next to you, her thigh barely brushing against yours as you moved.
Cat was on the other side of the room, seated next to Jesse and Astrid. You were internally very proud that Ellie had chosen to sit next to you instead. Her arm rested on the back of the couch behind you, and even though it couldn’t have meant all that much, you couldn’t help but wonder if it at least meant something.
You were just halfway through your cup by the time you started to feel really and properly sloshed. Your voice sounded tinny in your ears, and from the way that Ellie was laughing at anything anyone said, you had a sneaking suspicion that she was somewhere around where you were.
It wasn’t long before everyone had excused themselves and wished Ellie a final happy birthday—it was getting late and quite a few had early shifts the next day.
Dina was the last to go, saying goodbye and sending you another look as she pointedly stared at the arm rested behind you.
For a few minutes, you and Ellie just sat in silence, hearing the fire crackle and the sound of her softly breathing.
Then she spoke.
“How did you know that I’d like the moon rock?”
“Oh.” You blushed. “Don’t be mad. You left the closet door open the other day—you know, the one with all your space textbooks and everything. It was an educated guess.”
“So nosy,” she tutted.
“But you do like the rock?”
She smiled. “Yes. Thank you.”
You reached forward and polished off the rest of the drink that Dina had made you, feeling the liquid fire slide down your throat and settle in your stomach.
When you turned back, you could see Ellie staring at you, her auburn hair glowing in the firelight, her pupils blown wide, and her eyes slightly unfocused. She’d had more than one of the drinks that Dina had made, and it was really showing.
“You’re so pretty.”
You froze. Out of all the things you expected her to say, that was nowhere on the list. The words had left Ellie’s lips like a compulsion, raw and honest.
She hadn’t stopped looking at you, but her eyes were wider, her cheeks red. She hadn’t meant to say it, you realized. Now she was embarrassed and flustered, and it was all because of you.
It was the boldness of being tipsy that made you move towards her, pulling your legs up until you were seated on your knees in front of her.
Ellie didn’t move apart from wetting her lips, her eyes darting from your eyes to your mouth.
When you kissed her, she melted into you. The arm that had been draped over the couch behind you dropped to your back, your own hands sliding into her hair and tightening at the back of her neck.
She gasped as she felt your nails scrape against her, and you took the opportunity to lick into her open mouth, tasting the vodka on her tongue as it slid against yours.
To your surprise, her hands didn’t creep up your shirt or dip below the waist of your pants. They stayed static, one glommed onto your back while the other clutched your jaw as she let you kiss her, over and over again.
You couldn’t quite put your finger on it, but there was something about it that felt different than your usual nighttime meetups. It felt more—vulnerable, almost, that Ellie was kissing you just to kiss you, not with some other agenda.
The grandfather clock chimed, indicating that it was almost midnight. You pulled away from her for a second, panting as you caught your breath. A string of saliva suspended between your lips, snapping as you waved a hand through it and flushed.
“Sorry,” you whispered.
She just smiled.
“Is Joel going to be back soon?”
As if to punctuate your point, the front door banged open, the man in question pulling his jacket off and turning to see you both. You’d thankfully managed to get off her lap before he saw.
“Oh!” he said, his eyebrows nearly touching his hairline. “I wasn’t expecting you two to still be awake.”
“Uh, yeah,” said Ellie, scratching the back of her neck. “We’ve just been…talking.”
“Good party?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m glad. Tommy and Maria wish you a happy birthday, by the way. Though I’m sure you knew that.”
“Yeah. Thanks.”
“Well,” said Joel, giving a sigh that only old men could recreate, “I’m off to bed. You two don’t stay up too late, huh? You’ve still got work tomorrow.”
“Goodnight,” you two chorused.
Once Joel had disappeared into his room, you turned to look at her.
“That was close.”
“Yeah.” Ellie laughed nervously, picking at her cuticles. “Um—do you want to move somewhere else?”
Something deep in your chest ached. Sure, you’d be okay with spending another hour or so feeling her hands on you as she made you finish, but a part of you had really liked just touching her for the sake of touching her—kissing her just because you could.
“Sure,” you said. “Just give me a chance to change.”
When you knocked after switching into more comfortable clothes, the door swung open to reveal a significantly more nervous looking Ellie than you’d seen in a while.
“Hi,” you said shyly.
“Hi.”
You stepped into her, pressing a tentative kiss to the corner of her mouth. When she didn’t react, you pulled back.
“Is everything okay?”
“Do you want to stay over?” Ellie blurted out, her eyes wide and afraid.
You balked. “Uh, what?”
“You don’t have to,” she said, her eyes dropping to the ground. “I’m sorry. I know we’re not like that. I just thought that—maybe, I dunno, just this once—”
“Yes,” you interrupted. “Please. I’d really like that.”
“Right. Good. Okay.” She took a deep breath, then laced her fingers through yours to lead you to her bed.
When your mouth found hers again, it was just like on the couch—no intentionally rough or overtly sexual touches, just gentle brushes against your skin and the weight of fingers tangled in your hair as she pulled you further into her.
For the first time since you confessed, you didn’t sleep together. When you two finally tired out, you flopping down on the pillow first, Ellie’s head came to rest on the expanse of skin between your shoulder and your neck, your arms coming around her.
It was strange. For someone so deadly and tough, Ellie suddenly looked so small and fragile curled against you, the rise and fall of her chest synchronized with your breathing.
“I’m sorry Cat was invited,” Ellie said, her voice muffled from where her face was pressed into your neck.
“What do you mean?”
“I should have told you what her name was. That must’ve been a nasty surprise.”
Her foresight and understanding made your heart ache, deeply. How was it that she could say all these things but not want anything more with you?
“It was alright,” you said. There was no conviction in your tone. “I wouldn’t have expected you to tell me.”
Ellie was silent for a few beats. You knew she was thinking, though; you could feel the flutter of her lashes against you as she blinked.
“How long do you think it’ll take for you to forget me?”
You paused. “What? What do you mean?”
Ellie shifted against you, one of her arms draped over your chest. “I mean, when you go back.”
“Ellie,” you chided, bringing your hand up so you could run your fingers through her hair. “Don’t be ridiculous. As if I’d ever just leave you behind. If I go back there, I’m finding some way to bring you with me. So, no. That’s not even a valid question. I’m never forgetting you.”
In truth, you hadn’t even begun to consider what you’d do if—when—you were found. You’d been so focused on trying to fit into your new life here that your past had largely just faded into the back, shrinking in the horizon. What you did know, at least, was that even in some dystopian future without Ellie, she’d never be off of your mind.
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
“I’m not,” you replied, tapping her shoulder. “I mean it. You’re stuck with me.”
Her diaphragm vibrated as she let out a short laugh. “Oh, the horrors.”
She fell silent as you kept threading your fingers through her hair, letting your nails scrape against her scalp. The hand that wasn’t draped over your chest had crept up, her thumb rubbing back and forth as she traced the outline of your jaw.
“I’m sorry,” she said suddenly. “I can be such a sad drunk sometimes. It’s pathetic.”
“It’s okay,” you soothed, your other hand lightly dancing up and down her back. “I think it’s sweet.”
She snorted. “You would.”
Then, after a few more seconds of silence: “You really weren’t jealous?”
“I never said that.”
“So she did make you jealous?”
You flicked her shoulder. “Fuck off. Of course she did. Happy?”
“Thrilled.”
A few moments later, she spoke up again.
“Can you promise me something?” Her voice was deceptively casual.
“Anything.” You’d give her anything she wanted.
“Promise me that you’ll take the first opportunity to go home,” she said softly. “Promise you won’t do anything stupid.”
“I’ll take the first opportunity to go home as long as I get to have you around, too.”
You couldn’t see it, but you knew she was rolling her eyes. “Not good enough.”
“You want me to leave that badly?” You weren’t sure if you should be hurt.
“Of course not,” she responded. “I just...I don’t expect you to wait around here for me. I don’t want you to. I want you to be safe.”
“I feel safe with you.”
“Will you just—fucking—say you’ll go?” Her voice sounded raw, tired.
“Fine,” you said. “I promise.”
Your words were empty. You couldn’t promise her that. She had to know that. But would it matter? If you never had to make that choice?
In retrospect, you weren’t sure when you drifted off. All you remembered was the warmth of Ellie gathered up in your arms, her measured breath blowing across your exposed neck as you felt the slow, marching rhythm of her heart.
~
When you awoke to the early morning sunbeams streaming in through the window and warming your face, Ellie was passed out cold on top of you. A few unruly strands of her auburn hair had ruffled upwards overnight, sticking to your cheek and threatening the seams of your lips.
You’d never been happier.
As you thought, running your hand gently up and down the length of her spine, Ellie’s breath hitched.
You froze, thinking you must have woken her.
Then she made a quiet snort. She took another deep breath in, whistling as it went. Her next exhale was louder and caught in her nose.
You did your best not to laugh enough to wake her.
Ellie snored, even though she wasn’t that loud. The part of you that was still intimidated by her was shrinking by the minute. If only you had known in the beginning that after a long day of bullying you she went back to her room to honk shoo the night away, you never would’ve let it bother you.
She jolted awake, blinking rapidly as she pulled away and looked up at you.
“What the fuck are you laughing about?” she said groggily. “It’s—” She twisted in your arms, squinting at her desk. “It’s 6 in the fucking morning. Shut up.” With that, she flopped back down on top of you, laying one arm over your torso so she could shove it the space under the pillow beside your head.
“You shut up,” you heard yourself say.
Ellie smacked your shoulder, not even bothering to lift her head.
“You snore,” you said, quieter this time.
“I don’t.”
“You literally do. I was there when it happened.”
She was silent for a few moments. “Really?”
You pressed your lips to her forehead instead as you trembled from the laugh you were doing your best to rein in.
“Oh, god,” groaned Ellie. “That’s so embarrassing.”
“I thought it was cute.”
“You think everything I do is cute.”
“And what about it?”
You settled back in, wrapping your arms around Ellie as you tried to drift back off.
“Do you hear that?”
Her voice was whispered.
“Hear what?”
“That sound.”
You let go of her and sat up, your eyes unfocused as you tried your best to tune into whatever Ellie was talking about. Out of the corner of your vision you could see her staring at you with big, nervous eyes.
It took you a moment to notice it. No one could blame you, really. It was hardly a rarity to hear the sound of a plane when you grew up in Terranova.
“That’s a plane, Ellie,” you said, reaching out to cup her face. “It’s fine.”
“A plane?” She frowned, still blinking bleariness out of her eyes. “I’ve never heard one before. Joel told me that they stopped being used after the government officially fell.”
“That’s not true,” you corrected. “There’s some in—”
A puzzle piece clicked into place, and with it came a sense of underlying dread. But you shouldn’t be dreading it. It’s what you were hoping for after all, weren’t you? What you’d been praying for since you’d arrived?
“Let’s go outside and look,” you said, nudging her side. “I’m sure it’s nothing.” You were hoping it was nothing.
Ellie followed you, pulling a throw blanket from her bed and draping it around her shoulders like a cape. She looked so cute like that. You wanted to bite her. Not, like, in a weird blood kink way. Just in a…you didn’t know how to describe it. Better leave it there.
A lump formed in your throat.
Maybe you were wrong. Maybe this had nothing to do with you.
The air was tepid and pleasant against your bare skin as you two quietly opened the front door and crept onto the porch. The town was quiet. No one was awake at this hour, not unless they were down by the stables or doing night watch.
There was a sliver of pink and orange hanging over the tops of the mountains, no doubt remnants of what had been a spectacular sunrise. There were still snowy caps on the highest peaks. You hadn’t known that mountains could stay so cold for so long until you’d come to Jackson.
The lump in your throat grew larger.
“Shit,” said Ellie, leaping down from the porch and onto the road. “Do you see this?”
The plane was no longer in sight, but the swirling papers that hadn’t been on the road the night before were left as evidence.
“They must’ve dropped them,” said Ellie excitedly, snatching one from the ground and bounding back up the steps so she was next to you. “What do you think this says?”
You smiled sadly. “Why don’t you read it?”
She unfolded the envelope, ripping open the top and dumping the contents out in her hand.
“Oh.”
It was a picture of you. It’d been taken months prior at your family’s Christmas party. You’d worn glittery silver eyeliner and curled your hair. The upper half of your body was in view, clad in a rich red fabric that landed right below your collarbones. A string of creamy white pearls were clasped around your neck, matching the teardrop pearls that hung delicately from your ears.
HAVE YOU SEEN HER?
There was no other text, but you did notice a divet at the top right corner in the shape of a small oval.
Terranovan security. Of course.
Wordlessly, you pressed your thumb into the mold, holding it there for a second as the parchment recorded your print.
Then a paragraph formed at the bottom, ink slowly leaking into the paper.
COME TO THE COORDINATES LISTED BELOW AT EXACTLY NOON, MAY 15TH. A LIFT WILL BE WAITING TO ESCORT YOU.
You’d been found.

༻✧✧✧༺
“No no no, there is no way I’m wearing that.”
Opposite of you, your best friend, Laney, stood with two Richmond jerseys in her hands. One said ‘Tartt’ across the back, the other, ‘McAdoo,’ but you already knew which one she wanted to wear. She had a raging crush on Isaac, so that left only one option for you.
And there was no way you were wearing Jamie Tartt’s fucking jersey.
You would never hear the end of it. As part of the team’s physio team, you had a good rapport with most of the players. You complimented them when they had a good match and joked around while working with them through their physical therapy treatments.
You had a decent working relationship with everyone on the team.
Everyone except for Jamie Tartt.
There was no question that since his return to Richmond, he had become a changed man, but his past words had left a lingering resentment. You didn’t think you were in the wrong to simply avoid interacting with the man. He hadn’t often been seen in the treatment room, and when he had, you typically passed off his treatment to another member of the team, along with some flimsy excuse for why you couldn’t do it.
But recently, as he trained more with Coach Kent outside of the dog track, he’d needed additional treatment. And as the new lead of the physio team, you were in charge of his treatment plan.
In recent months, especially since working more closely with him, he’d started to notice the difference in behavior from you, leading to all sorts of jests and confrontations. Now, it seemed like he just got a kick out of teasing and inevitably pissing you off. You couldn’t help but fire some scathing shots back. What started out as a simple plan of avoidance had clearly backfired.
Now everytime he needed assistance with muscle cramps or pain medication, you got a conversation full of sarcasm and questions. It almost felt like sometimes he came in just to rile you up.
Just last week, Jamie came in to check on his ankle after a bad landing at training. You examined his leg and he made comments the entire time you had your hands on him.
“You know, I get waxed. Weekly. Everywhere.”
You had stumbled ever so slightly as you’d gone to grab an ice pack. You cringed inwardly, knowing this would only add more fuel to Jamie’s fire. You were tired of him getting the best of you, making you flustered. You wanted to fight back.
Turning back to him with the ice pack, you stared at him directly.
“Show me,” you challenged.
Jamie’s face held an incredulous expression.
“You mentioned it— you clearly want to,” you reasoned, shrugging your shoulders, “So show me.”
You hoped your confidence in calling his bluff worked in your favor, and his face showed that he was clearly surprised by this turn of events. You couldn’t tell what he would do next. He rolled his eyes with that smug smirk on his face before he raised his eyebrows and lifted his shirt up.
Sure enough, his chest was bare, showing off his sculpted muscles.
Jamie leisurely lounged across the treatment table, chest exposed, and you would be lying if you said your mouth didn’t water a little bit at the sight. Even after being around athletes on a daily basis, there was something about Jamie that just— hit different. His cockiness was surely annoying, but it was also incredibly arousing, as much as you hated to admit it. You felt a squeeze in your chest but you bit your tongue to keep yourself in line. There was no way that thought would ever bear fruit.
You shoved the ice pack into his lap, making sure some of it landed on the bare skin of his stomach, watching as he flinched a little bit at the abrupt action and cold temperature of the pack.
“Ice your ankle for twenty minutes, then stay off it the rest of the day,” you informed him, acting like the last few moments hadn’t happened. “You’ll be good to train tomorrow.”
Jamie scoffed at your indifference. He grasped the ice pack fully and let his shirt slide back down.
“Sure, love, I’ll do that.”
He knew you hated it when he called you by a pet name. That only made him use them more. You glanced back at him, staring into his eyes for a moment before you grabbed your bag.
The tension in the room was palpable before you’d headed out to check on the rest of the players at training. You hadn’t said anything else as you’d left.
So, yeah. There was no way Jamie Tartt would ever let you hear the end of it if you showed up in his jersey number.
“Oh, come on!” Laney pleaded. “I don’t want to wear a jersey alone.”
“Plenty of people do!”
“Yeah, but plenty of people don’t get to go behind the scenes and actually speak to the players,” she gushed. “I don’t want to meet them and look stupid all alone.”
“So instead, you want me to look stupid with you,” you gave her a flat look.
She smiled mischievously. “What? I thought it would be funny. You complain about him all the time.”
If only she fully comprehended the validity behind your complaints.
You knew there was no way you were ever going to win this fight, so you slipped on the jersey and braced for impact. You were happy to have Laney come along to a game, especially since you didn’t always attend matches and her being a big Richmond fan gave you an excuse to watch. You wanted today to be good, not just for you, but for her too. It was exciting to be able to take your best friend on a little ‘backstage’ tour during gameday.
You hoped today would be good, and that you wouldn’t have any run-ins with the man who made your blood boil.
Alas, not even twenty minutes later, as you walked into the back of the Nelson Road stadium through the employee entrance, you promptly ran into none other than Jamie Tartt.
“Well well well, I didn’t realize someone was such a big fan,” the familiar Mancunian accent taunted behind you.
You tried not to visibly cringe as you turned around to face Jamie. He was not yet in his kit, still wearing his street clothes: a monochrome denim set. It was frankly unfair how well the jeans fit him, but you refused to let your gaze linger for more than a few seconds.
“Oh my, it's the infamous Jamie Tartt,” Laney greeted him playfully. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Your jaw clenched at her words as she reached out to shake his hand. He eagerly accepted.
“Have you?” he asked with a mischievous look in your direction that made you roll your eyes.
Laney nodded emphatically. “She talks about you all the time.”
You nudged her shoulder to get her to stop talking but she just looked at you innocently. She knew exactly what she was doing, and it seemed like Jamie did too.
“Oh, does she?” Jamie questioned.
He was eating this up. His face was smug and you were sure this would haunt you for weeks to come.
“Laney, why don’t you go get some snacks? Shouldn’t be a line since we are here a bit early. I’ve got to talk to Jamie before the match,” you said. “I’ll meet you at our seats?”
You smiled sweetly at her, but underneath the nice layer, you knew your eyes held an anger that had her quickly waving goodbye and scurrying off. You were more than happy to have her accompany you to a match, but this entire interaction was reminding you of why you hadn’t invited her sooner.
For a moment, you just stared at him. It was hard to look him directly in the eye sometimes. Despite the headstrong front you kept up, you weren’t used to dealing with such interactions. You weren't stupid, you knew that this dance you two engaged in fell close to flirting (at least that’s what Laney said), and when you looked directly at him, you remembered just how fucking hot he was.
It wasn't just his physical attributes. Sure, he was in excellent physical shape, and his hair looked particularly perfect ever since he started going a bit blond, and his lips were always in a little pout, just begging to be kissed. But it was also a little more than that. Seeing him step up to lead as they began Total Football, working as a team player while also getting in extra workouts to be the best he could be. You weren't blind. You could see his internal changes on the outside, somehow. He didn't seem as cold. He didn't seem as distant and prickish. Jamie’s change in demeanor changed how everyone saw him including himself.
And he seemed to look even hotter than he used to.
Was it possible for someone to just keep getting more and more attractive?
It was part of the reason he drove you up the wall. How did he so perfectly remain just a little bit of a prick while also being a better person? And why did he have to look so pretty while doing it?
More and more people were making their way through the hallway as the dog track got ready for the match, and Jamie still stood in the middle, with an innocent, questioning look directed towards you.
You huffed before you grabbed his arm and shoved him into the treatment room. Even if he was acting oblivious to spectators, you didn’t want to put on a show when you once again ripped him a new one.
His face was still prickish as you turned to look at him. He was clearly enjoying this much more than you were.
“So you talk about me when I ain’t around, love?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.
“No, I don’t,” you said firmly. “And don’t call me ‘love.’”
He pursed his lips, “Seems like you do… love.”
He smiled cheekily at you and it took everything in you not to roll your eyes at him. Instead, you crossed your arms and put on what you hoped was your most serious face.
“I talk about everybody,” you defended, but he clearly wasn’t listening.
“Hmmm, and what do you say about me?” Jamie scratched his chin to mock being in deep concentration.
“Mostly, I tell people you’re a pain in my ass.”
The statement seemed to shock Jamie out of his act and he narrowed his eyes at you. You knew it wasn’t the best idea to have a sparring match with a footballer right before a game. They were pent up with nerves and adrenaline as they prepared.
After a moment of no response, you expected the conversation to be over and began to move toward the door, when he finally spoke up.
“Bend over, I’ll show you a pain in the ass.”
Now you’re the one who’s speechless. You let out a breathless laugh of shock, before rolling your eyes. You continued on your way to the door, moving to leave him in the room alone. Just as you go past him, he playfully smacks your ass. Before you have a chance to even choose your reaction, you let out what can only be described as a whimper mixed with a moan.
You whirl around to look at him, and you both seem to be shocked by the noise. You can tell your face is burning with embarrassment as you stare at each other in a momentary state of shock.
He recovers first, letting out a breath of a laugh. A smirk dances across his face.
“Liked that, did you?” he taunted.
You clearly didn’t recover as quickly, your reply coming out weaker than you’d like. “Shut up, Tartt.”
He stepped a little closer to you, and you stepped back instinctively, before you ran into the table set up next to the door.
“I liked hearin’ it,” he said, his voice coming out like a rough whisper.
It all happened so fast. One moment you were barely processing how close the two of you were. Making direct eye contact, breathing the same air. In the next moment, you had spun around, shoving your own pants down around your knees as you heard him unzipping his jeans. He gripped your waist as he spanked you again, and you didn’t even try to suppress the moan that left your lips.
He slid his dick in easily, and you were surprised at how wet you’d become from simply arguing with the man. He held you against his chest as he thrust into you, pressing a messy kiss to your neck, sucking slightly. Part of you was worried about him leaving a mark, but the thought was pushed to the back of your mind as he continued his journey along your neck. He raised your knee higher to rest against the table for a better position, and you groaned in unison as he thrust deeper inside you. You let your head fall back against his shoulder, leaning against him.
“You wanted this real bad, huh, angel?” he asked.
You nearly wept at the pet name. You made a noise of protest, but your voice came out near breathless from the intensity of it all. You felt like your knees would buckle from the sensation, so you gripped the table in an attempt to not fall.
“Fuck you— you wanted it more,” you defended, but just as you spoke, he hit deep inside you and left the end of your sentence turning to mush as you moaned.
The table wasn’t enough to grab onto, so you reached back and started to grip the strands of his hair. He groaned directly into your ear, and you felt your knees nearly give out entirely.
“Damn, you look so pretty with my name on your back and my dick inside you,” he mumbled as he ran his hand up to grip at your throat. The action wasn’t gentle, but the pressure was perfect.
You’d almost forgotten you were wearing his name across the back of your jersey. Of course he would think it was hot.
It surprised you when you realized you found it kind of hot too.
“Don’t get used to it,” you warned, “This isn’t happening again.”
Your harsh words felt like they had no meaning as you bucked against him. His own hips rose up to meet your own. Truth be told, you were getting your shit rocked and were already wondering when you could fuck him again. You felt your brain short circuiting. Your breaths were shallow as he moved his hand up to your mouth.
You bit his hand out of frustration, making him hiss and thrust his hips faster. He shoved his fingers into your mouth and you sucked instinctively, causing him to whine.
“Jamie,” you gasped around his fingers, “I-I’m close.”
“Me too, love,” he panted in reply. You didn’t have it in you to correct him over the pet name, overcome with the sensations coursing through your body.
He removed his fingers from your mouth and snaked his hand down your body to find your clit, adding extra pressure. He knows just the right way to move his fingers that has you falling apart in mere moments.
When you come, he turns your head to plant a wet, sloppy kiss on your lips as you both find your release. You find yourself kissing him back intensely, chasing his lips once he finally pulls away.
Your knees are weak at this point, fully leaning against him for support once he finally slips out of you and pulls his jeans back up. Before he has a chance to say anything between breaths, you reach for a towel off the shelves above you and clean yourself off.
You’re still out of breath as you finally look over at him. His face is shiny with sweat and you fear you look the same. You’ll have to stop by the restroom before you meet back up with Laney.
Laney.
The thought of your friend has you glancing at the clock on the wall, cursing yourself. Everything starts to come into clear view, and you wonder how you let things go this far. You just fucked Jamie Tartt. How the hell did that just happen?
You press your lips in a firm line. You try to keep your hands from visibly shaking.
“This is never happening again,” you tell him again, as you reach for the door handle to exit.
As you open the door, Jamie scoffs.
“Sure, love,” he says, sauntering through the door that you opened, “I’ll see you after the match.”
He leaves you with a wink before heading off to get ready for the match. If you thought he would be unbearable about the jersey, you had just made the entire situation so much worse.
You weren’t sure how long you stood in the treatment room before you finally left as well.

I often imagine in these kind of situations, because Miles doesn’t have many friends, he’s often either off to the side somewhere just jamming to the music on his own, or the little cousins are absolutely hounding him for some form of entertainment. There is no in between lol. But for this, lets refer to the formerly mentioned, and say this also takes place after the trilogy fiasco.
Like said previously, he doesn’t have many friends. The friends he does- or, did have, he can’t ever really see again. Maybe he’s got his cousins the talk to, and he of course has Ganke on speed dial, but other than that, Miles definitely feels more alone than ever at these parties.
A new face coming around would be met with a bit of apprehension. He doesn’t know how he should approach you. Should he introduce himself first? Wait til your parent(s) do? Should he offer you something from the food table? Start the conversation about the mix the DJ is playing? You definitely see the thoughts flashing across his face, and it’s only when you’re in front of him that his mind completely halts he lets a strained ‘hi’ come from his lips, a sheepish smile on his face and his heart racing because he probably looks like an idiot right now-
Turns out, you’re the kid of yet another family friend - can never have too many of those am i right? - who’s just as lost as he is, just as nervous and out of touch as he is. Maybe you don’t want to be here, maybe you aren’t sure why you had to come in the first place. But Miles’ first act of kindness to break the awkward silence is to awkwardly shuffle his feet, reach into his pocket to pull out his earbud case, and offer one up to you with a sheepish “do you like rap music?’
You both sit for a minute as you shuffle through his music playlists - he’s kind of nervous cuz he hopes you’re not judging his music taste, but when he sees you bobbing your head to the beat, it gives him some relief. After some time with this, one (or both) of your stomach rumbles and the food table is suddenly calling your name. Miles leads you to it so that he can tell you all that’s laid out. He himself eagerly grabs a small plateful of alcapurrias de Yuca (stuffed Yuca fritters) and tostones (double-fried plantains). He makes a point to point out some foods you may like - there’s a wide array of them, no thanks to his mom and aunties who always make sure the party table is always filled with foods from home.
Remember that scaffolding under the water tower for that building that was shown in the movies? Yeah, he takes you up there. Partially because the music is too loud to hear his own thoughts now, but also because he now sees you as someone cool and potential friend, and wants to get to know you better. Maybe it’s also the looming eyes of his mom that seemingly tell him to at least try and make friends with (especially someone they know, all things considered). And that’s where you guys chill out for the remainder of the party. You share socials, send each other titktoks or instagram reels, and make sure to exchange contact info to keep in touch. I think that throughout all of this, despite the anxiety that always comes with meeting someone new, Miles is forever grateful that he’s gained a new friend, and he definitely can’t wait to hang out with you more!

phone or video sex with mark please? where he’s been on tour and calls reader when he misses her
hi! thank you so much your request 💚 i hope you see this and tell me if you enjoyed it as much as i made it ♡ this was honestly a bit challenging to write — it's so difficult to keep myself from feeling so turned on by kinky mark 🥹
Tumblr media
genre: smut, a little bit of fluff
pairings: mark x female reader
word count: 1.7k
warnings: mentions of: porn, sex, masturbating, fingering, cum, kinky stuff, cussing, horny couple lol
a/n: lowercase intended, slightly proofread. also, i'm not adding "fluff" in the tags since this is 98% smut lol
⚠️ MINORS, PLEASE SCROLL AWAY! ⚠️
mark kept tossing and turning in his hotel bed, feeling quite relieved that he and jaehyun were sleeping on separate beds. otherwise, he would have definitely woken the latter up already from his restlessness.
it had already been 2 weeks since the group started their world tour, and they still have a few stops left for the month.
and that means it had already been 2 weeks since the last time you and mark had sex, which also means that he hasn't touched himself since then.
mark never thought he would become addicted to sex until the two of you started dating.
you were just so amazing in bed to the point he stopped relying on porn to jack off, and just imagines fucking the life out of you to do the trick.
he was just blankly staring at the ceiling before he raised his left arm to check the time on his watch. mark heaved a deep sigh after realizing that he only had a few hours left to sleep before they need to wake up for the rehearsals.
"she might be in the middle of work right now..." he mumbled to himself, staring at the ceiling again. this was definitely one of those nights he missed your touch the most.
ever since the two of you started dating, mark has come to love the kinkier side of sex. sure, he enjoyed the slow, more intimate kind, but he has come to enjoy the hard fucks more, bdsm, the quickies, and a lot more — all because of you.
mark dimmed the table lamp and grabbed his phone from the bedside, thinking he could just watch porn at this point instead of disturbing you at work.
he looked over at jaehyun, whose back was facing him before opening his phone's browser in incognito and typed in his favorite go-to porn site. mark heaved another sigh after scrolling through pages of videos, trying to find something to jack off to but failing. nothing really caught his eye enough to get a boner.
mark closed his browser and ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. thinking naughty things about you might help him get off, but it had been 2 weeks since he has seen and touched your body that he just felt the absolute need to actually see it again.
"i guess i can try..." he quietly said to himself again before opening your chat thread and quickly sending a 'hey sexy. i miss you sooo so bad :('.
mark closed his eyes, phone held tightly on his chest as he anxiously waited for your reply.
not even a minute later, a buzz on his phone signalled a new text. mark hastily opened the notification before smiling to himself, biting his lower lip in the process.
"hey pretty boy ;) i miss you, too :* but why are you still up?" you replied before sending a follow-up message, "isn't it, like, 2 a.m. over there?"
"yeah, can't sleep, baby :( i wish you were here :(" mark replied almost immediately, a follow-up message coming right after, "are you busy at work right now?"
a smirk fell on your lips after reading mark's follow-up message. you definitely knew what he wanted at that moment, as it wasn't the first time he has texted you like this when he was on tour (and when he was supposed to be sleeping).
mark's heart started beating faster in excitement after reading your reply, "i got you, baby ;* will call you in 10 minutes 👅"
he jumped out of his bed and dashed to the bathroom, quickly locking the door and making his way to the large bathtub. he got inside it and patiently waited for your call.
after sending your reply, you excused yourself from the ongoing seminar, informing your manager that you just had a really bad stomachache and will be heading to the infirmary for some medicine.
of course, that was all a lie.
as soon as you stepped out of the conference room, you ran as fast as you could to the elevator and went down to the parking lot. you got into the back seat of your car, quickly stripping off your clothes and your underwear.
the frequent car sex you had with mark was the reason why you have decided to invest in a really good dark tint for your car.
"hey, pretty boy," you greeted on the other line as soon as he picked up, voice already sounding so seductive for him. he bit his lower lip in a smirk and chuckled lowly, feeling the tingling sensation down his cock.
"hi, sexy." he said. "how are you?"
"not really feeling all too well... i want to see you,"
mark quickly requested for a video call with you, fixing his hair a little bit as he waited for you to accept it.
you quickly secured your phone on your car's phone holder before accepting his video call request.
"holy shit!" mark blurted in surprise as soon as you came into view. you were seated at the backseat, completely naked.
"you like what you see, baby?" you purred, cupping one of your breasts in one hand before playing with your nipple and dangling both of your legs on the sides of the seats infront, allowing mark to see the thing he's been craving for the past 2 weeks — your pussy.
mark could only gulp in response, feeling his boner growing by the second.
"let me see you, babe." you said, letting out a quiet moan as you used your free hand to lightly massage your clit.
"m-mark... baby..." you moaned in pleasure. "feels so... good..."
"fuck," mark grunted, positioning his phone in front of him and letting it lean on the bathroom tiles for support. he then shimmied out of his boxers in a hurry, with his hard cock springing out in full view.
you let out a gasp at the view of his big, hard cock. oh how you've missed it so much.
"fuck, baby. i want to suck your cock so bad right now," you moaned, still touching your now-wet pussy.
"oh yeah?" mark said, lips slightly parted as he started pumping his cock slowly, his eyes focused on your body. "i miss seeing you choke on my cock, baby."
"f-fuck," you moaned some more, turned on by the memory of deepthroating mark and how he would hold onto your hair to fuck your mouth until he cums.
"suck your nipple for me, angel." mark said. he let out a moan, increasing his pace as soon as you cupped your other breast higher and brought it to your mouth, licking and sucking on your nipple.
"fuck," he growls. "you're so hot."
you stopped playing with your nipple and used both of your hands to part the lips of your pussy, letting mark see its pink flesh. mark moaned again in pleasure, remembering how he'd hungrily eat it and how addicting its taste was for him.
"two... fingers..." mark said breathlessly as he pumped even faster, his eyes focused hazily on your pussy.
you adjusted yourself for mark to get a better view of you before placing two fingers on your clit, lightly massaging it, and the other two at the entrance.
"lift your shirt, baby. i want to see your nipples," you said, biting your bottom lip at the pleasure from your clit. hearing mark moan whenever you'd lick, suck and softly bite on his nipples was one of the things that turned you on, and for mark, it was one of things he never thought he would find so hot for a girl to do.
mark took off his shirt and threw it somewhere in the bathroom before spitting in his hand and pumping his hard cock again. you licked your lips at the sight of mark's fully naked body.
still massaging your clit, you licked your other hand's middle and ring finger and sucked on them seductively, moaning in the process.
"ahhh, fuck," mark groaned as his head lolled back in pleasure.
you let out a long moan as soon as you inserted your fingers into your pussy, slowly pumping it in and out, and massaging your clit at the same time.
"fuck, fuck," mark hissed, pumping faster, eyes rolling at the back of his head.
"hmm," you moaned, feeling so turned on by mark's reaction. you pumped your fingers in and out faster, now aggressively rubbing your clit.
"babe... your c-cock..." you said in between breaths, feeling your juice dripping. "want... it..."
"fuck, babe..." mark let out another groan, feeling another tingling sensation in his cock. "i-i'm g-gonna... cum..."
having been with mark for a while now, you have come to learn the things that drove him crazy in bed. and one of those things is when you would suck on your nipple as you fingered your pussy, which was exactly what you did at that moment.
"shit, i'm cumm—fuck!" mark grunted as he pumped even faster, his head lolled back again and eyes closed tigtly as he heard you moaning loudly on the call.
"m-mark... fuck, i'm cumming!" you said, your own eyes closed as you quickened your pace and pinched your nipple hard, the sensation driving you crazy.
"fuckfuckfuckfuc—shit!" mark hissed when he finally reached his high, his cum dripping all over his beaten cock. he heard you moaning quietly and chuckled tiredly.
"did you cum, babe?" he asked, panting. you could only hum in response, still catching your breath.
"i love you so much, baby," he said. "i love you, and i miss you so much."
you chuckled in response before giving him a tired smile, "i love you, too, mark. so, so much. and i miss you."
after catching up for a bit (while quickly putting on your clothes again and fixing yourself, mark did the same and cleaned the tub), the two of you ended the call with a promise from mark that he'll take you out on a fun date once he comes home from tour.
mark jumped up in suprise as soon as he opened the door to the bathroom, his face drained of color.
"i just hope there's no residue on the tub, bro." jaehyun said as he patted mark's shoulder with a knowing grin on his face before walking past him into the bathroom.
- end.

Hiya Dot! Sorry for the random ask but I am so in love with your writing that it single-handedly got me into this accursed fandom, and now I'm wondering where to start with other authors. Do you happen to have any fic or author recs??
Hi there, anon! I'm so glad you asked because I definitely have some author/fic recs that I'm more than happy to share with you/anyone else who comes across this post!
Before we begin though, shout out to all of the people I mention below! I hope none of you mind being tagged/linked but let me know if you do and I'll remove everything asap :)
1. Starting off strong, we have the amazing @jyoongim! She's been my mutual since I think like day one or two of me creating this account, and I honestly cannot think of anyone more kind or welcoming. Plus, their writing is amazing! Like genuinely so good, I cannot recommend her highly enough. 2. Also, if you're into smut, I am always utterly baffled at the quality of @hazelfoureyes' work. Like, as someone on the ace spectrum, I can say very firmly that sometimes, I don't want to read smut, but even so, I will always read a new post from Hazel when I see it because they're just so well written that I simply cannot wait lol. Plus, their sense of humor is just *chef's kiss*. Love them, truly. (Note: I used they/them here because I don't know Hazel's pronouns, but if anyone does and they aren't gn feel free to let me know and I'll edit this post asap) 3. Additionally, if you like headcannon style writing @a-hazbin-reader is incredible. I've spent actual hours on her page just reading through some of the absolute art she posts there, and it is always a treat. Plus her interactions with her readers are usually either hilarious or incredibly sweet/kind, so it's a good time all around.
As for story/specific fic recommendations, I do have a few of those too!
1. The Deer Dolly series by @ohproserpine (Genuinely incredible writing and a killer story line). 2. You & Me for the worst eternity to come by Notafraidtosimp on AO3 (Definitely not your typical x reader series, but I love everything about it and would never forgive myself if I didn't use this opportunity to share it with everyone). 3. The Partners in Death... and Life series by @safination (This might just be my favorite Alastor series I have ever read, the writing is incredible and I simply cannot recommend it highly enough). 4. Even Death Can Never Part Us by JuliaRobHURTS on AO3 (This is an amazing ongoing long-fic that makes me gasp audibly every time I see that there's been an update. The way the characters are written is utter perfection every time).
I definitely forgot some amazing fics/authors here in my haste to get this posted before class, so everyone should feel more than welcome to comment some other recs if they want to! <3

OnK Chapter 149
I know it doesn’t mean much coming from me because I’m always complaining about Aka’s writing, but…
Tumblr media
And I mean it when I say that I expect nothing 😭 This was literally my first ever OnK-related reblog and its tags are more relevant than ever lmao
Tumblr media
These, too:
#honestly I didn’t think too hard about any of this during my first read #because the romantic endgame seems so obvious that it kind of discourages guessing lmao #but re-reading these chapters has made me appreciate Aqua’s side of his bond with Akane a lot more
Back when I first got into OnK, I mentioned that Akane was the entire reason I kept reading the manga. I didn’t care about the romantic subplot, found Aqua/Kana extremely obvious and predictable, and Aqua plain boring.
It’s only during my second read that I paid close attention to Akane’s interactions with Aqua and I ended up playing myself into both, caring about Aqua and shipping him with Akane lol
This chapter has made me realize that despite everything, I'm not emotionally invested in whether they end up together or not. I’d prefer it, obviously, because Aqua truly is at his most interesting whenever he’s around Akane, and their dynamic has the best development in the manga (so far).
But it’s just like I said before: If they don’t end up together, that’s just Aka’s loss, not mine. I’m just here for Akane 😂
And as an Akane fan, I feel like the best thing for me to do right now is to just take a step back and watch things unfold, because Aka will do whatever he wants regardless of how any of us interpret his manga lol
So instead of posting the long post I originally wrote about this chapter when the leaks came out, I'll just share a a clown gif because in hindsight it was silly of me to expect Kana out of all people to have any sort of meaningful insight into Aqua 🤡
Tumblr media
And a couple of things that caught my eye because I can't help myself:
Kana didn't even see Aqua and Akane have any sort of meaningful moment, just those two standing in each other's vicinity was enough to make her throw herself a pity party. How many more times is she going to pity herself and give up? How has Aka not tired of writing her this way? Where did her development from the Scandal arc go? 🤡
So Chapter 147 featured Kamiki thinking Ai doesn't love him and Kana thinking Aqua likes her. It even had a helpful "Cut 139: Misunderstanding" panel and everything. Will this mean something? Who knows!
Kana used guilt-trip! It was super effective!
Tumblr media
Oh the irony! Poor Akane looks like she's been hard at work convincing herself that she's over Aqua. And you know what? I cheer for her and respect her energy 100%. I'd rather see her doing her mightiest to help him without any ulterior motives than to have her crying for him and hoping to get back with him every other chapter lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akane calling Kana out for her pity-party and for being cowardly was so cathartic that if I didn't already stan her, I'd have become a fan right now 😭 It also means that Aka is 100% aware of the way he writes Kana, so when will she finally be allowed to grow?
Kana's praise to Akane made me so sad though because yes, Akane is pretty and she's talented and she's kind. That's sweet of her to say. But that's not what made Akane someone special to Aqua: it was the way she understood him. The worst part is that Kana ends her praise by saying that Akane is a "goody-two-shoes" but... that's the opposite of how Akane views herself. She sees herself as someone who's not decent and not normal. So it's no wonder that while she gets flustered (it's her dear kana-chan praising her), she seems to get a bit sad/frustrated afterward. After all, for Akane it's probably the opposite. Men would prefer a decent, normal, bright girl like Kana - Aqua included.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish someone would tell Akane that she is too ignorant of her own charms and that she doesn't have to act like an adult all the time. Truly the pot calling the kettle black! Sadly, unlike Kana, Akane seems to have no one in her corner in this manga. Aqua was the only one there and the poor guy is barely even a character anymore lol
Overprotective mother or controlling ex-girlfriend? Take your pick!
Tumblr media
The English translation left something pretty important out in these panels. Akane doesn't just say "if you have a girlfriend", she says "if you have a precious/important girlfriend". This distinction is very important because it goes to show that... as expected, Akane doesn't think she was an important girlfriend to Aqua. It's like she didn't count and Kana would be the real deal. Oh, Akane...
Tumblr media
Which takes me to her very silly, very convoluted yet very predictable plan (in true Aka fashion).
Tumblr media
When Akane thinks “I know exactly what you hate”, I imagine she means that Aqua hates hurting and endangering those he cares for. So I'm guessing Akane thinks that if she plays matchmaker and quite literally throws Kana at him, someone he has a soft spot, then Aqua won't be able to go through with his revenge because that would mean breaking Kana's very fragile heart.
Tumblr media
In other words, it looks like Akane is going to try and use Aqua's guilt-complex against him and her weapon of choice is love. But not her love, obviously, because as far as she's concerned, her romantic love already failed to save him.
Tumblr media
Granted, using Kana's romantic feelings to her advantage is kind of... well, wrong. To quote Akane herself, [Kana] is neither her pet nor her property, but a person. But I'm guessing that Akane may be falling victim to the same loophole she got caught in in Chapters 96 - 98. She thinks she knows what's best, so she's putting her own beliefs aside for the time being.
Kind of like Aqua, actually.
Tumblr media
And, ironically, it's Aqua himself who first realized how easy Kana is to use.
Tumblr media
So! All in all, I'm here for Mastermind!Akane but I hope that Aka will actually make it worth our while. Will Kana realize that she's about to be used as a chess piece in this Proxy War? Who knows, characters in this manga seem to walk in circles, only being allowed to grow when it fits the plot 😂
Last week we wondered whether Aka would subvert expectations or go the predictable route, and down the predictable route he went. His way of making it less predictable is by including a twist in the form of Akane's ulterior motives, but will this be enough to allow this ol' used trope to lead us someplace new? I guess we'll have to keep reading to find out, but given the quality of the writing lately, I'm not expecting much lol

No idea what the ettiquette is for things like this but I adore your brain esp with Sherlock and Mycroft. pLEASE share any of your thoughts/hopes/expectations for s&c Mycroft (and his + Sherlock’s dynamic) 🙏
I swearrrr all of yous in the Sh&Co fandom are so sweet!! 🥹
As for my thoughts/hopes/expectations, It usually comes up randomly in my head but I would say...
Tumblr media
Thoughts:
Mycroft hasn't been mentioned (except by the writer's that there isn't a voice actor for him yet) and this fits in with the surprise John and the audience will get when he is introduced. I'm excited for that but tbh I don't have any other thoughts, when he does appear DW I'll tag you in my post of thoughts :))
My hopes/expectations is that:
Mycroft is not slim. LISTENNNN LISTENNNN OKAYY, often hes portrayed as slim due to medical/mental issues which I still love btw (the approach to his character with these are some of the most powerful fics I have ever read) I just want a Mycroft that is a big boy and I hope he is.
Mycroft doesn't worry about Sherlock that often due to seeing him online with John now, he also follows the podcast, twitter account and is definitely on their patreon. That's why we haven't heard of him so far because there's no need for him to contact Sherlock. He's going to make a comment about the podcast and the detective career when he's introduced though.
Lestrade and Mycroft actually keep in touch quite often- not just due to Sherlock but cause of Lestrade being the DI and Mycroft being the government would mean they would cross paths more often than not. Especially true in hostage negotiations and/or terrorists attacks!! Lestrade would have to be present as it's all hands on deck and Mycroft may just be needed for 'cleanup' afterwards. They both could be introduced at the same time or within episode of each other. If not, they will know each other soon!!
Mycroft and Sherlock will do their iconic back and forth deduction but with both Mariana and John present. 👀
Mycroft doesn't drink alcohol nor consumes anything that wasn't made then tested - can't risk being intoxicated or poisoned when he could be called up at any moment, there's no time for resting. He does throw caution to the wind when he eats at Sherlock's though, hoping for a scene where they are having dinner together.
John will have direct contact with Mycroft just like Lestrade after they meet, this allows Mycroft to be a reoccurring character (FINGERS CROSSED MY GUYS!).
Mycroft is going to have a one on one conversation with John off the record about the case of The Greek Interpreter and John will definitely record it and then later plans to delete/censor it but Sherlock says not to and just publish it raw because why not. It be funny lol.
Further head-canons (some are also hoped or expected) because now I'm lost in the sauce and can't stop:
Mycroft has never worried about himself too much outside of work reasons, he was too busy taking care of Sherlock + the estate and handling incompetent politicians and global political leaders to ever care.
Sherlock was and is a danger to everything alive or objects - including himself!! This especially when he was a child doing any sort of experiment because often touch and tasting is the first thing done, so Mycroft aged like 20 years when Sherlock was a child in his 'i must grab and put this foreign thing in my mouth' phase. One time he wanted to touch and taste the insides of his bee plushie - it was just cotton tho (and a heart attack for Mycroft).
He is the reason Sherlock has expensive tastes and was unable to lean him off it due to having the exact palette as well. He's the reason Sherlock is spoiled about his groceries but don't say that to Mycroft because he did his best...not really but he likes his branded sweets okay.
Mycroft (as he is a big boy) needed suits that were custom made for him and up to his impeccable standards so he got them commissioned and had the designer he found to also create sensory friendly clothing for Sherlock. 🥹
Mycroft likes John Watson and Mariana a lot, they both love his brother and that's the only thing he could ask for.
Mycroft is a tank!! He is more than capable of neutralising someone if needed - whether hand to hand or by weapon/s - but just like how he isn't a detective, he isn't his own bodyguard nor hitman because he's lazy and that's why you have employees.
Mycroft thought that Sherlock and John are more than friends but gets even more confused when Mariana is there? Then decides it's none of his business really, he needs to focus on easing tensions between the King and the Prime Minister.
Mycroft and Sherlock not only had deduce-offs but also regularly fought one on one hand to hand combat for fun. Mycroft was scared asf tho when Sherlock started to have intense interests in swords, no thank you.
Mycroft unlike his behaviour at work being that of an ice man whose looks could kill, is awkward and shy when it comes to Sherlock. There's not much to talk about when you're siblings whose work requires the utmost confidentiality, can easily deduce what the other did and with one's work famously being published and the other's influence clear in every political news!!
Now that's all I have, I'm sure my brain will come up with some more stuff later on and i'll be sure to tag you in them from now on!!

2.2 SPOILERS!! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK
this is a small lore discussion! mostly speculation and theories- i have not seen leaks about 2.3 plot yet, but i have seen a couple about boothill's character stories, so please keep that in mind!
trigger for mentions of suicide(aventurine) and mega corps(the ipc)
we have to talk about the ending cutscene with aventurine and boothill more! i'll start with my fav parts that no one really has brought up yet:
Aventurine intimidating Boothill after mentioning the guards are out- Boothill sounded so offput and hasty while reassuring him they were just knocked out, and we have to talk about aventurine himself just being intimidating more honestly his glare actually did kind of scare me.
Boothill pointing a gun at aventurine was. well. i'm sorry i did actually laugh at that. boothill i think you should research your targets a bit more honestly that guy is NOT afraid of guns. he fully walked into the nihility and pointed at least one gun at himself, and just got out of his own meticulously-planned suicide. threats of death won't work, sorry. also he has good reason to hate oswaldo schneider as well- threats didn't even have to be used, probably! he would kill him too, probably(revenge arc go go go!!)
the convo between aven and jade was. yeah. why he's betting his life again, i don't know (maybe sarcasm? or it was really just banter?) but it does seem like the two of them aren't super close at all, at least from what little i could gather. also if diamond hurts aventurine the entire fandom will kick his ass, emanator or no, so he better be prepared for that too lol. also, it was a pretty common theory aventurine would leave the ipc after exiting nihility, since acheron presumably broke his ties- i wonder why he went back? perhaps he had no plans as to where to go, or he has some ulterior motive?
how did he get out of nihility so unscathed? (for context, i haven't gotten aven's text messages yet, but i'm aware of some of their contents since they've been floating around w/out spoiler tags. the messages are mentioned a bit here if you wanna avoid spoilering!) i know argenti got him out, but 1) why was argenti there, or where did he even find him? and 2) that seems so random- both argenti and jade confirmed it, but plot-wise what's even the point of argenti pulling him out? also argenti said he was in a "woeful state" when he got out, and apparently the stonehearts are willing to give aven a break (which i'm assuming is major, since stonehearts are super important and have a lot of responsibility, plus he just destroyed a cornerstone) so him already being back on his feet when we see the phone call is a bit weird right away. he doesn't even sound sick, and ratio or any other doctor is nowhere in sight! (message spoilers start here) i'm aware the aventurine cornerstone was fully shattered/destroyed while protecting him from nihility- was he really in there for who-knows-how-long without any protection at all? he's apparently having nightmares and the ipc needed to call in a doctor of chaos to treat him, which is concerning considering his mental health and general will to live were extremely low even before walking into the nihility. like he genuinely has some of the worst will to live i've ever seen in a character or human being- walking through the nihility should have utterly destroyed him mentally and physically, but it didn't. 2.3 HAS to give us a whole lotta context, especially with nihility lore (my favorite aeon, i may be biased) and more about the ipc!
anyway, thank you for reading this poorly formatted, stream-of-consciousness word vomit about 2.2's aventurine lore. hope you liked it! drop ur thoughts in replies and reblogs plz they give me life(although i will be very busy next few weeks, so please don't be offended if you want a reply and don't get it, im so sorry!)
2.2 was peak- a bit slow, but the story was some of the best, if not the best stuff hoyo has given us in terms of writing quality. so great! i cried for sure, and that boss battle was just everything- especially the music. robin my lesbian queen if i didn't have to pull for firefly i would get your lightcone for sure...
see you all next time! thx for sticking around (:

Call Sign: FANBOY
pairing: Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia x Reader
summary: There are reasons why Mickey Garcia got the call sign he did. But maybe the most important one...is you.
warnings/tags: short and sweet fluff, possible canonical inaccuracies (?), a lil meta
author’s note: I really thought my first writing post would be about Bucky Barnes, Peter Parker, or Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw considering my URL but there is a severe lack of Fanboy content on this website. Also, I’m not sure if some of the stuff I wrote is canonically correct but it is what it is lol A special thank you to @bradshawsbaby for all your support and help. Thank you, thank you! Hope you all enjoy :)

There’s no denying that Mickey Garcia is a damn good WSO. Despite being one of the youngest in his Top Gun cohorts, he is one of the best the US Navy’s ever seen. Being one the best, however, does not make him immune to the teasing that comes with Naval camaraderie. That’s very evident in his call sign: FANBOY.
When anyone asks him about the origins of his call sign, he’ll recite an answer he’s handcrafted ever since the name was assigned to him. First, he’ll blame his age. As one of the youngest, Mickey automatically got the ‘little brother’ designation and the treatment that goes along with that.
He’ll bring up his first time around at Top Gun and the frequent pranks that his buddies would pull on him. He’ll talk about the one time his friends broke into his locker to orchestrate a surprise--fake--spider prank, criticizing their lack of originality. To be fair, his combination was his birthday, so it wasn’t the best security measure on his part. He’ll usually leave that detail out, but when he does let it slip, he’ll immediately make it clear that he’s learned his lesson.
He’ll recount how in opening his locker, his friends were greeted by a gallery of photos of his family, his friends, his love, and...still photos of Top Gun (1986). “Listen, that movie changed lives,” he’ll justify. “And it’s not like I’m the only one who wanted to join the Navy after watching it”. He’s right, but still. FANBOY strike 1.
Then, he’ll talk about how they also stumbled on his CD collection. Yes, he is the type of person who in a time when digital streaming has made CDs virtually obsolete, continually purchases, collects, and frequently uses CDs. “They’re cool to have and something I can pass down,” he shrugs. On top of that, though, the man kept the CDs in his locker. “For convenience,” he’ll stress. “Everyone loves a good playlist.” FANBOY strike 2.
He’ll mention how his friends explain what they did next. He was told that when people discover a collection, naturally, there’s a desire to go through it. And that’s what his buddies did. Led Zeppelin. Jimi Hendrix. Stevie Wonder. Selena. Bob Dylan. The Jackson 5. Nirvana. Bad Bunny. Jay-Z. BTS. Backstreet Boys. Carrie Underwood. N*SYNC. JLO. He especially got teased for the last few. FANBOY strike 3.
But most of all, he got teased for a certain CD. It was a blank CD, the cover flipped to its blank side. Written in Sharpie, the cover read, “To Star, from your biggest fan”. Surrounding the writing were the attempts of heart and star doodles, though they looked more like guitar picks and sparks. He tried his best. But it was clear what it was: a mixtape.
He’ll describe how his friends must have scrambled, forgetting about the prank they planned to execute. He’ll think about how they must have decided that the more appealing option was to dive deeper into their discovery. They probably slammed his locker shut, sprinting to the lounge to pop the CD into the CD player. Mickey imagines his friends huddled around the speaker, leaning closely and intently as they anticipated what they would hear.
The first few seconds were silent.
Then a rustling.
A deep breath in.
And out.
“Hi baby. I miss you so much. I know the distance has been as tough on you as it has been for me. But I want to thank you for always being there. For supporting me. And as we continue to follow our dreams separately, just know that I think of you constantly. That you and our future together are always on my mind. That I’m so proud of you for doing your thing and admire you so much for it. I’m your biggest fan, forever and always. Sky’s the limit with you and me, Star. I love you.”
And with that, Berlin’s Take My Breath Away starts to play. FANBOY strike... it probably isn’t quantifiable at this point.
My God, did that really take his friends’ breaths away. Mickey was told that they didn’t know whether to cringe, laugh, or sympathize. So...they stayed frozen.
A few bars into the song, he walked into the lounge, drawn by the familiar tune. He found them all gathered around the CD player, eyes wide and jaws dropped. Processing.
“What’s going on?” he gently asked, apprehension and suspicion radiating off of him.
Collectively, his friends’ eyes trail from their stare at the CD player to his confused face. Mickey will describe how he saw it happen in slow motion. He’ll paint the exact moment he figured out what his friends discovered and how they’d next respond. He says he had a millisecond to prepare himself.
Then, the room erupted. His friends jumped up, whooping, hollering, whistling, cackling, making smooching noises. They called him whipped. Love struck. But what can he say? He’s a fanboy.
Tumblr media
author’s note: Andddd that’s it. That’s my first writing post. Hope you like it! I have ideas for what would happen when Fanboy introduces Star!Reader to his Navy friends. I would love any comments and feedback, as well as any requests you might have!
Also a special thank you, again, to @bradshawsbaby for the idea of Fanboy making a mixtape for his love and his friends finding it. Such a cute, funny, and fitting idea. Thank you, thank you!

You were sad, drunk and sleepy.
Sonya told you to go home a while ago, but you were too tired to move for yourself. She noticed that, so she called the only person she knew would come in an instant. The problem was that it wasn’t one of your friends, or any of your siblings, hell, you would have preferred she had called your mum. But it wasn’t up to you.
“She is here for you, sweetie.”
In your half drunk half asleep state you couldn't tell what Sonya was saying. She saw you struggling to understand her words, so she just pointed to the front door of the bar. And there she was. Even in your current state, you could recognize her everywhere. How could you not? You spent hours looking at her, engraving every little detail of her face on your mind. You could tell by the look on her face that this wasn’t how she planned on spending her saturday. To be fair, it wasn’t entirely your fault. Sonya, your friend and bartender, was the one who called her. Although, deep down you thanked Sonya for calling her, even if it hurt you would always love seeing her stupid pretty face.
“Thanks for calling, Sonya. I’ll take it from here.” Said that raspy low voice of hers, one of the many things you loved about her.
“Take care of yourself, hun.” Sonya whispered to you and nodded to Florence.
“Okay, let’s go.”
Now that was embarrassing —being carried by your ex to her car so she could drive your drunk ass home. This was not how you expected to end your night, but you should have thought things through. You should have thought better than getting so drunk that you couldn’t move for yourself. How stupid of you.
You both were silent the whole car drive, you could read the room, she was mad. But she didn’t have the right to be mad at you, she broke up with you. She had no right to feel anything for you. She caused this whole thing. You just wanted her, you wanted everything from her, but you knew she was a Hollywood star in the making, she was making her own name, how could you blame her? You only wanted what was best for her, so you let her chase that fame. As a consequence, you two fell out with each other. You tried your best to not let her slip away from you, but she had her mind elsewhere.
Florence never wanted to break your heart, you were nice. One of the nicest people she’d ever met. You meant everything to her, but she didn’t want to hurt you anymore. She knew she had become distant, that she was too caught up with her career, and it did you no good. So she did what she thought was best for you and let you go. It was the hardest decision of her life, but she thought you were better off without her. She thought you would build your life back up again. And when Sonya called her, after a month of breaking up with you, she knew that she had made the wrong decision. Florence wasn’t mad at you, she was mad at herself, for letting you go, for not making things work out with you. She missed you and hated herself for what she had done —what she had done to you.
She was surprised when Sonya called her, she didn’t expect a call from the bartender at 1am but she knew it had to be important if she was calling her of all people. However, she was even more surprised when she told her you had gotten drunk. You weren’t the type of person to get drunk in a bar. She immediately knew that something was wrong with you. And when she got to the bar and looked at you, she knew you were there because of her. The sad look in your eyes made her hurt ache.
Once in your apartment, she put you to bed. You thought that was it, you were never going to see her on, except for when she would be on tv. You didn’t like that thought. You wanted her with you. You wanted her to take your pain away, even if she had caused it.
“I miss you.” You whispered. You hoped she would say she had missed you too.
“You’re drunk. You don’t know what you're talking about.” she couldn’t take you seriously, not in the state you were in. Even though she really wanted for it to be true.
“Haven’t you heard that a drunk mind speaks a sober heart? And that’s how my stupid sober heart feels. I miss you, Florence.” Florence’s heart missed a beat.
Hearing her name falling out of your mouth, caused a revolution inside of her. Truth was she never stopped loving you, but she thought you would be better with someone who wasn’t like her. Someone who could give you their full attention. Seeing you like this, broken hearted, made her hurt burn, since she was the reason you were like this. She caused this whole thing.
“Okay, how about we talk about this in the morning when you’re no longer drunk, huh?” she needed to leave, seeing you like that was killing her. She was afraid to make things even worse.
“Stay,” you said, so low that she barely heard you, but loud enough to stop her from walking away from you, again. She thought she imagined it, but then you said it again. “Please, stay. I miss you, just come back to me.”
“Y/n, i’m sure you’ll regret it in the morning.” She didn’t want to take advantage of the situation. It wouldn’t be fair to either of you.
“I need you. Can you at least hold me until I fall asleep?”
“I’m not sure–”
“Please, it's the least you can do.” Even when the only light in the room was coming from your window, she could see the pleading in your eyes. She could never say no to you.
She lied next to you, unsure of what to do next. Should she say something? Should she do something? She missed this, being this close to you. She missed your scent, even now when she could smell the alcohol on your lips. She missed your warmth, your touch. She wasn’t sure if you were already asleep, she couldn't see your face since you were on your side, but she had to try.
“I regret letting you go.” There she said it, she thought it would make her feel a little bit better, but it didn’t. The burning feeling still in her heart.
You turned to face her, letting her know you were listening, she took it as a sign to keep on talking.
“Things haven’t been the same since you left. I feel hollow, all of the time, as if something is missing. And it's you. I know that I hurt you, and I hate myself for that. I just thought I was doing what was best for you.”
“Did you really think that you leaving me would be good for me?”
“I now realize that, I just thought–.”
“No, I don’t think you actually know. You broke me into a million pieces. The one person that I love the most in this whole word, and you just pushed me away as if I was no one. Do you know how fucked up that is? We were supposed to talk to each other when things got complicated, not just push the other away.” Venom spitting from your mouth, And Florence couldn't blame you. You had every right to be mad.
“I know I fucked up, big time. But I want to make things better now. I can’t live without you, Y/n. I want you back, I need you back. I’m, I’m not giving up on you, on us. I will go through hell and back if I have to prove to you how much I regret this.” Tears were forming on your eyes, could you trust her again?
“You hurt me.”
“I know, baby. I know I did,” Tears rolling down your cheeks, Florence hated seeing you cry, especially because of her. “Just let me make it better, okay? Give me a chance to prove myself to you.”
You already knew the second she lied beside you that you would forgive her, no matter how bad she had hurt you. Florence had this power over you, yeah, she destroyed you in a million pieces, but she also could make you hold in just seconds. You needed her just as much as she needed you.
“Okay.” That was all Florence needed to bring you closer to her. She kissed your tears away, holding you tightly as if never letting you again.
“Now go to sleep, baby. You must be exhausted.” She smile at you.
“I’m scared that if I do, when I wake up you won't be here anymore.” You mutter, scared to admit that to her.
“I promised you this is not a dream, baby. I’m here now. It 's okay. You can rest now.”
You rested your head in the crook of her neck, it made you feel at ease. You have been longing for this feeling ever since the break up. A smile formed on your lips once your nose was filled by her intoxicating scent. You missed this, you missed her. But she was here now, ready to amend every wrong she had made.
Florence promised to herself that night she would never hurt you again. If things got complicated, she wasn’t going to throw in the towel. She would find a way to make things work. She was never going to give you up. She had peered through a window, all the love she unraveled and the life she gave away, and she didn’t like it, not even one bit. She was relieved when you gave her another chance, and she was going to make it worth it. Because you were her sunshine to her midnight rain, and she couldn’t live without you.

SLIDING DOORS, “Seemingly inconsequential moments that nonetheless alter the trajectory of future events.”
05. in which esperanza meets his teammates
previously: chapter four
read it on wattpad!
BY THE TIME SATURDAY came around, Esperanza couldn't deny that she was more than a little excited. If the opportunity to go clubbing with half of the Chelsea squad had arisen before she met João, she probably wouldn't have batted an eyelid — but after watching the last couple of games and following every single player and person involved in the club on Instagram (which also included another one of her deep-dive research sessions into their Wikipedia pages), Esperanza felt oddly privileged to think that in a few hours she would be drinking and dancing with them like old friends.
Between the end of her classes and João's arrival back from Liverpool (where he'd gone to watch the team play from the stands), she busied herself with painting or schoolwork, in the hopes it might somehow speed up the clock ticking sluggishly on the wall. Esperanza was only slightly ashamed to admit that she'd cut her lecture short by ten minutes in order to make it back to her apartment in time for the game. She wanted to make a habit out of watching them, especially when João began playing again. Somehow (though she'd never had much of an affiliation to any football club before) Esperanza felt herself rooting for Chelsea surprisingly intensely. It was a strange feeling, but a good one. She could understand why so many people did it now. Football was kind of addictive.
In contrast to her excitement (and slight apprehension) for the upcoming night out, Doutzen, who had — after some persuading — accepted Esperanza's offer to tag along, was not quite so enthusiastic. She kept going on about betrayal and shame, which Esperanza found a little bit dramatic, but she supposed if she'd been the die-hard Spurs fan going clubbing with half of the Chelsea squad, she might have felt like a traitor to her club too. Still, Doutzen had promised, and there was no way she could back on it now. Esperanza wouldn't let her. She needed her moral support.
João hadn't bothered going back to his apartment when he arrived back from Liverpool. He went straight to Esperanza's. She was waiting for him inside, halfway through her newest painting (a commission from Mrs Davies of one of her many cats — this had become a regular occurrence since the woman found out Esperanza was a painter, and she would pay her a pretty decent sum for her efforts too). João was used to the chaos of Esperanza's apartment by now. Most of the time when he went round to see her, she would be mid-project, with her brushes and paints scattered everywhere, an old, baggy shirt framing her figure and nothing but a pencil, twisted into the curls, holding her hair into a bun on the back of her head. Her apartment almost always smelled like coffee and acrylic paint. It wasn't exactly something João had ever thought he would love as much as he did — but it just felt like Esperanza.
The story was much the same when he finally got back to the apartment complex. He knocked on her door but didn't wait for an answer before opening it (neither of them bothered anymore). Esperanza was inside, hunched over a canvas with a concentrated frown on her face and some classical piece playing softly through the speakers she always kept on the kitchen cabinet. She didn't hear him as he stepped into the room. João smiled. He'd been expecting it. She was lost to the world when she painted.
"Is that for Mrs Davies?" João's voice cut through the gentle lull or piano keys and strings. Esperanza looked up. Her frown cleared, revealing a smile like the sun when she caught sight of him.
"Yep." she nodded, struggling to her feet and dusting off her knees. They too were splattered with paint, "She's paying me sixty to do a big one of — what was his name again? — Oh, Mr Whiskers. That woman has so many cats I can't keep track."
João walked forward to stand beside her, kissing her sweetly, and looked down at the painting laid out on the floor. Just like everything Esperanza did, it was immaculate. He couldn't quite fathom just how talented she was: and just how fortunate he was to be the man in her life. In all honesty, João wasn't entirely sure what she saw in him, but at this point, he'd just take the win.
"Mrs Davies has a black cat?" he asked, scrunching up his nose in faint horror. In Esperanza's painting the cat was certainly a black one; with wide, stare-into-your-soul type of green eyes that somehow, from within the canvas, seemed to follow him when he shifted his gaze. João shuddered. He'd never been much of a cat person to begin with, but black cats were a step too far.
"Yeah, it freaks me out too." Esperanza giggled softly at the look on his face, "And I'm not usually a superstitious person, but this cat is scary. Don't tell Mrs Davies I said that."
João nodded distractedly. He'd lost his train of thought as soon as her heard her light, bubbling laugh. It was becoming one of his favourite sounds, he had recently discovered. He forfeited any capability of continuing the conversation, left with nothing but a stupid smile on his face and a blank mind. Only Esperanza ever seemed to be able to render him absolutely speechless, his mouth opening and closing like a goldfish. A lot of the time, she didn't even have to do anything. João was just enamoured with her. That was all it took.
Esperanza's fingers clicked in front of his face, breaking him out of his trance. He'd been staring, it seemed, because now she was gazing up at him with a questioning smile. He scratched the back of his neck sheepishly.
Most of the time when João visited Esperanza's, he was more than happy to just watch her paint. In fact, that had been a specific request of his the last few times he'd been round. On the cold, rainy days when it was simply too miserable to go anywhere, they'd sit on Esperanza's living room floor, listening to the patter or raindrops on the window as her paintbrush glided masterfully across the canvas. There was something so peaceful about it; so intimate. Neither of them felt the need to fill the silence in those moments. Just being in each others' presence — close enough to hold — was more than enough.
"Are you still up for tonight?" João asked as he watched Esperanza begin to pack away her paints, resisting the urge to chuckle when he spotted splatters of black and green on her shirt.
"Of course." Esperanza grinned, "I'm looking forward to it."
And she truly was. Her dress had been picked out hours ago (with Millie's help over face time obviously) and she'd already packed her handbag with all the clubbing essentials — lipstick, powder, tissues. She'd ignored Millie's suggestion of taking a condom with her just in case, arguing firmly that she had absolutely no intention of having sex with João tonight. It was far too early in their relationship for that, she had spluttered indignantly. Millie simply pulled a face.
"You're basically living with the guy." she had said with a snort, "Don't tell me you haven't at least thought about it."
Esperanza didn't even grace her with an answer. It was a stupid question anyway. Of course she'd thought about it. João was insanely attractive, and he had a habit of starting his home workouts while she was around. It was impossible not to think about that when he teased her so shamelessly, wandering around sans shirt for hours after he'd finished his reps. João knew exactly what he was doing. He had to. She figured she was probably fun to tease, taking into consideration her blushing problem.
"Did you ask Doutzen if she wanted to share a taxi with us to the club?" João went on after a few moments. Esperanza blinked away her thoughts with the faintest blush. She shook her head.
"Yes, she said thank you but she's fine just getting one by herself."
Well, that had been the gist of the conversation. In reality, Doutzen probably would have preferred not to be alone but, to quote her directly: "I don't fancy watching you two stick your tongues down each other's throats, thank you very much." Esperanza silently wondered why she thought they would be the kind of people to make out in the back of a taxi, while the driver sat barely even a few feet away, but she knew better than to argue. Besides, she was a little grateful for the privacy. As much as she loved Doutzen, there was no way the Dutch woman would have been able to keep quiet for the duration of the taxi journey — which would have led to a lot of embarrassment for Esperanza, considering how much she talked to her about João. She'd rather not have to deal with that if it came to it.
"I don't think she likes me very much." João spoke up again when they were sat on Esperanza's sofa, buried beneath a pile of blankets. She lifted her head up from his chest to regard him with a frown.
"Who? Doutzen?" she clarified. He nodded, "She doesn't not like you."
"Wow." João huffed out a laugh, "Thanks for the reassurance." His head fell back against the sofa, and he turned it to the side to pout half-jokingly at her, as if the insinuation that Doutzen wasn't his biggest fan had genuinely hurt his feelings. Esperanza rolled her eyes, but she couldn't help but giggle softly at his expression.
"Don't take it personally." she jabbed her finger at his shoulder, "Doutzen doesn't really like anyone."
"That makes me feel so much better." João quipped again. This time, in retaliation, Esperanza poked him a little harder, hard enough that he gasped and wriggled away to shoot her a playful glare.
"Why are you so worried about her liking you anyway?" she asked. João sat up at the hint of seriousness in her tone, "Are you trying to gain approval or something?"
Esperanza worded it like a kind of joke, laughing — albeit unconvincingly — at the end. His slight frown deepened. He wondered if she thought the idea of him wanting her friends to like him was stupid; as if he wasn't already at the stage in his feelings that he feared the possibility of their disapproval might ruin things. João didn't want to be the guy that her friends hated. He didn't want to act as a wedge or come between their friendship. To him, it just showed that he cared — truly cared. But he wasn't sure Esperanza could see that yet.
"You know I'm serious about this, right?" João spoke up again after a moment, "About you. Us."
Esperanza blinked. She could feel her heart begin to pound in the pulse at her throat. His eyes, which somehow she managed to hold, bore into hers.
"You are?" she practically whispered. João nodded immediately.
"Yeah." he murmured, "Are you?"
"Of course." Esperanza let out an incredulous chuckle, as if the thought of her being anything but absolutely enamoured with him was absurd.
"Well," João smiled to himself, feeling his chest grow warm and his mind a little hazy, "I'm glad we're on the same page. And for the record, yes, I'd prefer it if your friends didn't hate me. That's normally kind of a dealbreaker isn't it?"
Esperanza couldn't help but laugh. Her cheeks burned crimson, courtesy of his confession, but for once she simply ignored it.
"Doutzen doesn't hate you." she insisted, "She just takes a while to warm up to new people. Besides, Millie likes you! And trust me, she's not easy to please."
It was true: Millie seemed to be rooting for Esperanza and João to work out even more than Esperanza herself was. Considering how protective Millie had grown of her in recent years, especially after the break up with her high school boyfriend and that disaster one night stand, Esperanza had to admit she was a little surprised at how quickly she had taken to João. Not that she was complaining.
"But Millie lives in Argentina." João sighed, "Doutzen lives, like, two miles away. It's not like I have anywhere to hide if she decides she hates me. And the way you talk about her sometimes, she sounds kind of scary."
Esperanza shook her head, "You're so dramatic." she giggled. João's stricken expression relaxed as she reached up to thread her fingers through his hair. He let out a faint groan, "Just give her time to warm up to you." she smiled, before leaning down to whisper in his ear, "But don't worry, if she doesn't, I'll protect you."
João's eyes fluttered open and flitted over to look at her. He hadn't even noticed them shut, nor had he realised how close Esperanza had drawn to his face. His gaze automatically flickered down to her lips.
"My saviour." he mumbled under his breath, chuckling softly, "What would I do without you, amor?"
Esperanza didn't answer. At least not verbally. She chose to thread her fingers tighter through the curls at the nape of his neck, and pull him down into a kiss instead.
Like most afternoons, they spent the next few hours curled up on the sofa bingeing the last episodes of Outer Banks (spoiler alert: João definitely cried, even though he would have denied it vehemently); sharing the odd spontaneous kiss, which sometimes progressed into something more, and sometimes remained as just a sweet peck. Esperanza would later remember thinking that she could have stayed there for the rest of her life and been perfectly content. If only the clock hand didn't creep around, and the light fade from the sky. Eventually, they both knew they had to move, unless they wanted to risk being late.
João reluctantly went back to his own apartment to change, as per Esperanza's insistence. He may not have cared whether he turned up to the club in sweatpants or a perfectly tailored suit, but she wasn't about to let him purposely underdress because he was too lazy to get up off the couch.
"Just go get ready." Esperanza sighed in exasperation as she pushed him by the chest out of her apartment and into the hallway.
"Alright, alright, I'm going!" he yelped.
"I might still be in the shower when you get back, so just let yourself in." she told him, reaching for the door to close it once he had gone. The corner of João's lips turned up into a smirk.
"Yeah?"
Esperanza's eyes widened, "I meant into my apartment! Maldito idiota."she giggled faintly, shaking her head as her cheeks flamed with that oh-so-familiar crimson blush. João grinned widely at her, leaning forward to press a quick kiss to her cheek.
"I'll see you in a bit." he winked. Esperanza rolled her eyes, pressing her hands flat against his chest and pushing him out into the hallway. His voice, shouting one final goodbye floated through her apartment door as it swung shut. She had to lean her forehead against the cool wood once he was out of sight, just to try and banish the heat from her cheeks.
With João gone, she began the process of getting ready. Her dress wasn't new (she hadn't had the time to go out and get one in between her classes and unfinished essays) but since buying it around six months ago she hadn't yet worn it. Now seemed as good a time as any. Esperanza laid the dress out on her bed, along with a pair of heels and her handbag, before heading to the en suite bathroom. She'd checked the clock beforehand, and she had more than enough time to enjoy a nice, long shower before time began to press. With her Taylor Swift playlist on shuffle, Esperanza made it through about a dozen songs before switching the water off. She wrapped herself up in a fluffy towel, and, making sure to listen out for any sign of João returning, made her way back to her bedroom. She couldn't hear the gentle hum of the TV, nor his voice calling her, so she assumed he was still in his own apartment.
Esperanza had to admit — she'd picked out her dress not only with João in mind, but his friends too. The reason being, it was blue. She wanted to make the best impression possible, and though the colour of her dress probably mattered very little, she figured showing her support for Chelsea, even in a small way such as that, would give her a bit of a head start. Besides, João had been trying to get her to wear his team shirt for days. Wearing his team colours was close enough, right?
As Esperanza was drying her hair she heard the front door of her apartment open and close, signalling João's return. His voice floated through to her bedroom, asking a question she couldn't quite discern. "I'm getting changed!" she called back, hoping he would get the message.
João did, in fact, get the message. He hadn't been gone for that long, so he assumed the wait for Esperanza to get ready would be a while. He took a seat on the edge of her sofa, fidgeting nervously with the cuffs of his white shirt. Though it felt like he'd known Esperanza for years, their relationship (if he could call it that) was still relatively new, meaning that, to his frustration, he still got a little nervous before going out. Especially if their plans for the night involved her dressing up. There was no doubt about it now, in João's mind, Esperanza was the single most beautiful woman he had ever met. He sometimes felt a bit inferior stood next to her. Tonight was no exception.
She didn't emerge from her bedroom in the next five minutes, nor the next ten, so João let his mind drift away aimlessly as he sunk deeper into the couch. Before long his aimless thoughts returned to Esperanza, as they tended to do more often than not. Memories of previous dates or evenings spent curled up on that very same sofa watching Outer Banks flooded his mind. He thought back to their first date, smiling fondly. It felt so long ago now. João could still taste the faint flavour of her cherry lip gloss on his tongue.
"What are you smiling about?" a gentle voice cut through his daydream, and his head snapped to the side just in time to see Esperanza walk through the door. João opened his mouth to reply; though, it snapped shut again just as quickly.
"Uh... nothing." He stammered. The young woman narrowed her eyes suspiciously, partly because she didn't believe him, and partly because he was gawking at her like he'd never seen a member of the female species up until that very moment. She ran her hands self-consciously over the front of her dress.
"What's wrong?" she frowned, "Do I need to change?"
Esperanza thought maybe wearing blue was a step too far. What if it came off as looking desperate? Her cheeks burned under João's increasingly intense stare, as for a few moments, he appeared too dumbstruck to formulate an answer. She never could quite interpret whether that was a good thing or not.
"Nono! Don't change!" he spluttered out finally. Esperanza's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, so he quickly stood up from the couch and moved over to her in three strides, stopping with barely a few inches between their bodies. Her eyes widened at the sudden lack of distance, "You look beautiful, amor."
Esperanza felt every ounce of doubt in her body dissipate into the open air. A shy smile replaced the frown that had spread across her face. She may have been able to hold João's gaze without feeling too awkward by this point, but she was thus far yet to find a way to suppress her blush whenever he said something like that. It was such a simple compliment; understated, though it was something she had never heard from a significant other until meeting João. Somehow, he seemed to know exactly the words to make her melt.
"You think so?" Esperanza giggled, playing with the hem of her dress.
"Of course." He grinned, "You're breath taking. You know that, right?"
Again, it was as if she had given him a list of ways to make her flush crimson and squirm in a flattered, shy sort of embarrassment, and he was using it against her.
"Shut up." Esperanza rolled her eyes. They were stood almost chest to chest now, so she reached her hands out to press against his torso and push him away gently.
"You are." João persisted, "Even if you don't think it, I'm telling you that now."
And he sounded so sincere, so genuine, she found herself beginning to believe him. It wasn't as if she especially struggled with her body image — no more than any other person did — but Esperanza knew she didn't exactly have the 'model' type figure which she was certain João was used to. She couldn't squeeze into size 4 jeans and she didn't have a completely flat stomach, yet she'd never really had much of a problem with that. Maybe it was because she felt so strongly about João, she wanted him to accept her for who she was, no matter her body type. She wanted him to find the things that other people may have criticised her for attractive. Maybe that was too much to ask. Esperanza didn't really know.
But so far, he seemed to be ticking all the boxes.
"Do you like the colour?" she decided to change the subject quickly before her cheeks became too red to cool down. João looked down at the minidress (trying not to focus too much on the way it seemed to fit her body like a second skin) and smirked.
"I'm turning you into a Chelsea fan." He teased.
"I would say I'm a fan of whoever you play for." Esperanza laughed, "But I do have a bit of a soft spot for Chelsea now. Got to represent my team, right?" she shrugged. Perhaps her main intention was to give herself the best chance of winning João's teammates over, but there was a lot of truth to her words as well. She felt a certain connection to the club now. And she didn't just think it was down to João.
"I knew I'd get you into football somehow." He said with a triumphant smirk. Esperanza scoffed, ready to protest, but he was speaking again before she had the chance to open her mouth, "You should come to a game sometime. I could get you a ticket."
His eyes widened hopefully. It made her smile to see, and even if she'd wanted to, she didn't think she could have turned him down.
"I might have to take you up on that offer."
João didn't stop grinning for at least the next half an hour.
They were piling into the backseat of their Uber before long, João giving the club's address to the driver. Esperanza texted Doutzen to let her know they were on their way, and received a reply in seconds, confirmed the Dutch woman had also just set off. With any luck, they'd probably arrive at about the same time. That would have eased Esperanza's nerves, at least.
João, as he always did, seemed to sense her growing doubt. He knew her well enough by now to recognise that talking it out would probably just make her even more nervous. The thing that he'd noticed calmed Esperanza down was touch: an arm around her waist, his hand squeezing hers gently, anything that involved his skin on her own seemed to muffle the doubts and fears flying around her head. João could almost feel her overthinking now. So he took her hand into his and laced their fingers together, like the intricate stitches of a tapestry. Esperanza's head turned up to find him smiling softly at her. She smiled back.
"Thank you." João nodded to the Uber driver as they climbed out at the doors of the club, handing him a twenty pound note through the window. Esperanza shot him a disapproving look.
"I said I'd pay."
João scoffed, "Absolutely not." He wasn't about to let his girl fork out for an Uber they were sharing when he had more than enough money in the bank to pay for the both of them.
Esperanza knew not to argue. João was generally quite passive most of the time (otherwise known as, he was a little afraid of her stubborn streak and he'd go out of his way to make sure that whatever he did, she agreed to first), but this was something she knew he wouldn't budge on. Young men with too much money liked splashing out on behalf of others, that was what Esperanza thought. She couldn't exactly complain, though — it wasn't as if her ever-decreasing monthly allowance, barely minimum wage part-time job and student debt could afford the kind of prices business owners in central London got away with. Plus, João did insist.
"Hey, is that Doutzen?" the voice of the aforementioned cut through Esperanza's thoughts, and she whirled around in the direction of where his finger, now outstretched, was pointing. João had never actually met Doutzen before: he'd only heard stories about her, and been shown some blurry photographs. But even if the pictures he had seen could barely be made out, it wasn't difficult to match the stand-out characteristic of Esperanza's best friend, to that of the woman running towards them now. Curly red hair.
As it turned out, João's logic was sound. The Argentinian woman waved excitedly at her friend as she shuffled awkwardly towards them in her six inch heels. Doutzen wasn't a fan of bright colours, so she had opted for a forest green minidress with a cowl neck and a small slit climbing up her thigh. Her hair was left in all its wild glory, curled down to her shoulders. Esperanza had always been a little envious of Doutzen's hair. It always seemed to fall perfectly, even when she hadn't even done anything to it, whereas she needed to spend an age styling hers just so it didn't look like a mop on top of her head. All in all, it was clear the Dutch woman had dressed to impress. Ironic considering how much she'd complained when Esperanza first convinced her to tag along.
"Anzi! You look hot!" was the first thing Doutzen said as she approached them. Giggling, Esperanza let the Dutch woman pull her into a tight hug. When she pulled away, Doutzen turned to look at João with a smirk.
"Loverboy thinks so too."
His eyes widened. He didn't need a hint to realise that Doutzen was talking about him, though he hadn't expected her to be quite that bold, even if Esperanza had warned him about her lack of a filter (and even if she was right). João turned to look at the Argentinian woman, his eyes still wide, and found her expression mirroring his.
"Doutzen!" Esperanza hissed, "Sorry. I told you, she can't keep her mouth shut." She apologised, her gaze flickering between her friend, where it hardened into a glare, and João.
"Alright, maybe that was a bit too soon." Doutzen laughed. As Esperanza's scowl softened just a little, he figured that must be the Dutch woman's way of an apology – or the closest she ever got to one.
"I'm Doutzen." She spoke, offering her hand for him to shake. João took it hesitantly. "I've heard a lot about you from this one. She never shuts up about you."
Faintly, João heard Esperanza let out a groan from behind him. He couldn't help the smirk that spread across his face, though he resisted the urge to turn around.
"I could say the same about you." He returned after a moment.
"All good things, I'm sure." Doutzen shot back with mock self-assurance, causing him to laugh loudly.
"Of course."
João took a step back and, without turning to look at her, looped his arm around Esperanza's shoulder. He knew for a fact she was blushing, even if he couldn't see her face.
"You talk about me a lot, huh?" he said in Spanish, glancing down with a smirk to find her ducking away from his gaze, sure enough, with pink cheeks.
"Cállate." Esperanza muttered back; but as much as she tried to prevent the small smile from creeping onto her face, it simply wasn't possible with João pulling her closer into his side.
"Aw, cute, you guys have your own secret language." Doutzen spoke up suddenly with a sickly sweet smile, sarcasm practically dripping from her voice. João frowned and Esperanza pulled a face.
"It's Spanish —"
"Are we gonna go meet the rest of your teammates then? Or do you want me to leave you two alone for a while?" the Dutch woman rattled on, completely unfazed. She was marching towards the front door of the club before João or Esperanza even had time to think of a reply, seemingly revelling in the fact that she could bypass the queue and the bouncers thanks to the Chelsea squad's VIP status. Esperanza rolled her eyes, exasperated, before pulling João along by his hand after her runaway friend.
"I told you she was a handful." the young woman spoke. She tilted her head upwards with an apologetic smile, hoping it might compensate for Doutzen's earlier antics.
"I like her." João replied. She raised an eyebrow, "She's a, uh. — She's a character."
"She sure is." Esperanza snorted. Even if Doutzen could be brazen at times, and never really stopped to think about what she said before it was too late, she loved her for it. Besides — it was that part of Doutzen's nature that kept her going through Jordan's lectures. She's sure she would have fallen asleep without her little quips and comments.
Once inside the club, the Dutch woman finally slowed down to wait for them; only because she hadn't a clue where João's teammates were, but the motive didn't matter so much at the time. With his arm now wrapped securely around Esperanza's waist, as if he feared he might lose her in the crowd, João led the two women towards where Reece had told him everyone was meeting.
They were in a booth towards the back of the club, away from prying eyes. He waved when he caught sight of his friends, and began to walk faster. Esperanza's stomach fluttered with nerves. The light was too dim to make out everyone's faces yet, but she didn't really need to. She knew exactly who she was about to meet — she'd seen them on TV enough times by now to know almost every single one of them without introductions:
"Hey mate, how are you?" a young man with tight curly hair and eyes that creased when he smiled was the first to greet João, pulling him into a side hug and patting him on the back. He'd let go of Esperanza's waist by now, leaving her feeling a little vulnerable. But as soon as the man released him, João's arm wound around her shoulder, pulling her close to his side.
The friendly man was Reece James. Esperanza had always thought he looked a little intimidating on the TV, but when he turned to her with a kind smile that made his eyes crinkle at the corners, any kind of apprehension she may have felt evaporated.
"Hi." he beamed, "You must be Esperanza."
The young woman nodded, returning his enthusiasm as best she could.
"Reece, right?" she smiled hesitantly, hoping her newly acquired football knowledge wouldn't fail her.
Luckily, Reece's grin stayed ever-present. Esperanza mentally punched the air. That was one of João's teammates down without accidentally insulting them — only five more to go.
"We've heard a lot about you from this one." Reece spoke again, as she watched two new arrivals approach them from over his shoulder. She switched her gaze from their advancing figures to the young man's smirking face. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see João shaking his head in embarrassment.
"Oh, really?" Esperanza giggled, turning to nudge him playfully with a newfound burst of confidence, "What's he been saying about me?"
"She's so smart and pretty and perfect." one of the new arrivals interjected, in a high, pitched, dreamy tone. João groaned loudly, "I don't know how I got her to like me — she's wayyyy out of my league."
Esperanza watched in amusement as João punched his teammate's arm half-heartedly. Ben Chilwell merely cackled, as did the second of the two new faces, Mason Mount. They nudged each other like little children passing notes, snickering at the look on João's face. When Esperanza looked up at him, she couldn't help but laugh with them, seeing his crimson cheeks and ever-so-slight pout.
"Don't you start." he groaned, but there was evidence of a smile in his eyes. Esperanza could see it as clearly as she saw her own hand in front of her face.
Soon, Mason and Ben had finished with their childish giggles and were introducing themselves, matching smirks painted across their faces.
"What's your secret, Esperanza?" Mason asked suddenly. Esperanza blinked, caught off guard, but she didn't even have time to ask what he meant before Ben was cutting in.
"How'd you manage to get him so whipped?"
Another groan came from João. She couldn't help her cheeks turning a little pink this time, suddenly overwhelmed as they began cackling again. Turning her head up to look at João, he merely rolled his eyes, mouthing what looked like an apology. She waved him away. He'd experienced much the same with Doutzen, after all.
"Are these two bothering you?" An unfamiliar, gentle voice entered the conversation, tearing Esperanza's attention away from João. The voice belonged to a young woman with dark hair cut just below her chin, and wide, forest green eyes. She smiled softly, and Esperanza felt herself relax in an instant.
"Oh, no, it's ok —" she tried to dismiss, but the young woman had already rounded on Ben, shooting him a half-playful glare.
"I thought I told you not to scare the poor girl off." Her green eyes narrowed, and Ben shrunk away slightly. Behind him, Mason began to snicker, but he was quickly silenced when her glare switched to him.
"Sorry about them." the woman turned to look at Esperanza, the sweet smile suddenly taking over her features once more. "They act like children sometimes."
Esperanza giggled, waving away her apology.
"I'm Cartia. Ben's girlfriend." She stepped forward, arms held out wide, before she was engulfing her into a tight hug. It made it hard not to smile. Esperanza hadn't come across many people in England who were as keen huggers as she was — she supposed it must have been a culture difference. But then again, Cartia didn't sound very English; Australian perhaps, Esperanza figured with her limited knowledge of foreign accents. Cold handshakes must have just been a thing the Brits engaged in.
"Come on, I'll take you to meet the rest of the WAGs!" Cartia exclaimed excitedly, reaching out to grasp Esperanza's hand and pulling her out of João's hold before he even had the chance to complain. She looked back at him for a second, holding off the urge to laugh at his forlorn expression. 'WAGs?', she mouthed, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. João merely shrugged. He was too far away now for her to see the faint flush in his cheeks.
Cartia stayed true to her promise of introductions. Esperanza was almost hidden behind her frame until she pushed her to the forefront of the group sat huddled together in a booth. Doutzen was already there, seemingly having made the rounds when she hadn't been paying attention; she spoke animatedly to a young woman with thick blonde hair, like they'd been friends for years. Esperanza rolled her eyes fondly. She wouldn't have expected anything else.
Within a few minutes, she too was huddled in the booth, with João on one side of her and Cartia on the other. It didn't take long for her apprehension to melt away. As soon as she was introduced to everyone, it became like a gathering between old friends. João had certainly been right about her liking his teammates; they were all lovely, treating her with as much warmth as they treated anyone else sat around the booth. She liked the girlfriends too, or the 'WAGs' as Cartia had explained to her they were often referred to as. Esperanza found she wasn't so opposed to that label at all, even if her and João weren't official. For once, she wasn't afraid of the thought of it.
Cartia, being the first WAG she'd been introduced to, was her point of reference when getting acquainted with the others. She was a lovely girl: bubbly and charismatic, but a dreamer as well — like she lived in another world. A perfect balance to Ben's brashness and realism, she thought. The second of the WAGs Esperanza met was Mia McClenaghan, Reece's girlfriend. She was just as outgoing, if not more so than Cartia. Reece explained she'd been dying to meet her since the boys first caught on to João's little crush (in his words). The third, Sophia, was quieter than the other two, but in a way that gave her a much needed sense of calmness and security. Esperanza didn't think she'd ever met a couple so well matched as Sophia Weber and Kai Havertz. With Kai's dry, sarcastic sense of humour and Sophia's sweet disposition, they were like chalk and cheese in the best way. Her eyes were drawn to their little interactions, showing how much they trusted each other. She wondered if her and João would look like that one day.
Their company also included some late arrivals. Firstly, Kepa Arrizabalaga and his fiancé Andrea Martínez. From the moment they entered the room, Esperanza could immediately tell they were in their own little bubble. They were still friendly and welcoming, but there was something different about being recently engaged, she thought, that likely made them feel like they were the only two people in the room sometimes. She thought it was cute, how obviously infatuated with each other they were. Secondly arrived Chelsea's newest signing, Mykhailo Mudryk. João had been right once again — his English was patchy — but despite that, the moment they were introduced she could sense his kindness and genuine happiness just to be there with them. Esperanza took a liking to him straight away.
Within an hour the group had split — João and his teammates to the bar to order drinks for all of them, and the WAGs to the dance floor. Esperanza wasn't really a party person, but Cartia, Mia and Doutzen seemed to compensate for her lack of energy with their own: and maybe they rubbed off on her just a little bit. Sophia wasn't massively into clubbing and dancing either, it seemed. She and Esperanza were content just watching the others laugh and jump about, swaying from side to side to whatever bass-heavy remix the DJ put on next. They somehow managed to hold a conversation over the noise, although sometimes it was difficult, and they had to move so close to each other their noses almost bumped. It turned out Sophia was just as lovely as Esperanza had predicted from their first encounter, if not more so. She quickly grew to become her favourite of the WAGs.
"How did you and João meet?" the German woman shouted over the pounding bass.
"It's kind of a funny story, actually." Esperanza giggled, "I almost knocked him over running for the elevator when I was late for class."
Sophia's eyes widened, her hand flying to her mouth to hold in her laughter.
"I know, it was so embarrassing! And I didn't even know who he was either. He told me he played for a lower league team. Then when I found out he played for Chelsea I avoided him for three days." Esperanza shook her head at the memory of how frankly stupid she had been. Sophia laughed.
"Well, it seems like you made quite the impression on him." she said with a grin, as Esperanza's cheeks heated up, "Kai tells me he pretty much never stops talking about you."
"I'm sure he's just joking..." she mumbled, but the small, shy smile, creeping its way onto her lips was unmistakable. Sophia wasn't ignorant to it. Nor was anyone, for that matter.
João couldn't help but watch her from across the room. It seemed as if she was enjoying herself, dancing and chatting with the other girls like old friends. His gaze softened. Whenever Esperanza was happy, he found it impossible not to mirror that in himself. Her joy was infectious. Even if he was stuck waiting at the bar while people jostled him drunkenly in an attempt to get their orders heard, far away from where she was, João still could feel his heart warm.
"You really like her, don't you?" a voice said rather suddenly — and loudly — in his ear. He spun around to face Reece, who was watching him with a strange, calculating expression, like he knew some kind of secret he couldn't let him in on just yet. João smiled.
"Yeah, I do." He spoke softly, "She's — she's just perfect. Everything about her is perfect." he trailed off with a far-away looking smile, "I can't believe how lucky I got, meeting her."
Reece chuckled, "Bro, you're down bad." he clapped a hand on João's shoulder, inadvertently breaking him out of his half-trance, induced by flashes of the memories he and Esperanza had slowly been building over the weeks they had known each other.
"I'm happy for you." Reece went on, "She's a keeper, I can tell. Don't let her go if you can help it, yeah?"
João's mouth opened and closed, suddenly feeling slightly more solemn. It hurt his heart just to think about anything going wrong with Esperanza. If he had to watch her walk out of his life, just as she had done... well, he wasn't sure he could handle it. He would never tell Esperanza, for fear of scaring her off, but she was already one of the most important people in his life. Only a few weeks in, and he could already scarcely imagine his life without her.
"I wasn't planning on it." João answered back firmly. The bartender handed over their drinks next, so nothing more was said on the matter. They shared the load, carrying  them over to the group, who all cheered loudly at the prospect of more alcohol. João handed over Esperanza's drink in exchange for a kiss. He delighted in the blush that spread across her cheeks as a consequence, and even more so in the sweet but brief press of her lips on his. It gave him a feeling he never wanted to give up. Not for the rest of his life.
The night grew more and more blurred together the longer they danced, drinks, freshly refilled, seeming to materialise out of thin air in their hands (they didn't really — Mason supplied them with plenty of refills, but they were too wrapped up in each other to notice). It was lucky everyone else around them seemed to be just as tipsy, otherwise, Esperanza was sure, someone would have recognised João and taken some pretty incriminating pictures. At some point, Mason and Ben dragged him away to the bar, and she was left with Sophia again. The German woman detached herself from her boyfriend (who, if the way he wrapped his arms around her and hid his face in her neck was anything to go by, seemed to be quite the clingy drunk) as soon as she noticed João's absence. Esperanza giggled at Kai's complaints, before she was being dragged out into the middle of the dance floor by Sophia, leaving him, still whining, behind.
"Anzi, there you are! I've been looking for you everywhere!" Doutzen yelled over the thumping bass, as she intercepted them in the middle of a throng of dancing bodies. Esperanza's eyebrow arched, taking in her appearance — her previously tamed curls now wild and rumpled, cheeks flushed, and lipstick smudged around the corners of her mouth, as well as a little on her chin. The Argentine looked to Sophia, both of their smiles morphing into smirks.
"Have you?" Esperanza drawled sarcastically. If it had been her facing accusations, she was sure she would have crawled into a hole and died of embarrassment. But of course, Doutzen van Aalsburg was not phased. She merely grinned.
"Maybe not." The Dutch woman snickered.
Typical, Esperanza thought.
They danced for a little while longer, when a song she vaguely recognised, which Doutzen claimed was her favourite, came on over the loudspeakers in a rush of bass so deep she could feel it pulsate beneath her feet. Gladly, they didn't remain stuck in the large group of clubbers for long, which, with the alcohol's influence, was beginning to resemble a mosh pit more than anything. Esperanza certainly didn't want to get beer chucked on her if she could help it. Doutzen had had more to drink than her, she figured, though that wasn't much of a surprise. The Dutch woman's movements were becoming more and more wild with each passing moment. Sophia had to catch her arms more than once before she hit someone in the face. But it was good to see her so relaxed for once. Esperanza had been beginning to fear that the stress of finals had sucked out her fun-loving, party-animal side completely.
"Are you going to tell me who he is or not?" when Doutzen and her flailing arms finally got close enough, she shouted over the music, waiting for her spaced-out expression to grow into another, very characteristic smirk.
She wasn't disappointed.
"Oh, I don't need to." Doutzen laughed, "You've met him already."
Esperanza groaned.
"Don't tell me —"
"You know, you were right, his English needs some work." The Dutch woman went on, "But it's ok. He can do much better things with that mouth."
"Doutzen!"
Esperanza's cheeks burned. Whether it was from embarrassment at her less than chaste words, or from annoyance — or even just simply from the alcohol — she didn't know. Her best friend seemed to delight in it, however. Sophia, who had drawn close enough to overhear their conversation, giggled loudly, holding her hand to her mouth to try and contain her laughter. Esperanza shot her a look which read, don't encourage her, but it wasn't long before she too was laughing. Of course Doutzen would manage to have a Chelsea player wrapped around her little finger by the end of the night. Bless poor Mykhailo's soul, Esperanza thought pityingly. He had no idea what he was getting himself into.
"Speaking of, I think lover boy's looking for you, Anzi." The Dutch woman remarked with a faint smirk. She spun around. Sure enough there was João, stumbling his way through the crowd, craning his neck as though searching for something —or someone. As soon as his glassy eyes zeroed in on her, his whole face seemed to light up. Esperanza's cheeks ached with the size of her smile, and burned crimson when Doutzen and Sophia both snickered. In an instant, João was pushing his way through the crowd in a bid to reach her, hardly even noticing the angry curses he received in response to elbowing someone out of his way. He only had one thought on his mind.
"Amor!" he cheered brightly when he finally reached her, swooping down to press a sloppy kiss to her cheek. Esperanza chose to ignore the looks Doutzen shot her way at the nickname — something which was also unfamiliar to her, but surprisingly welcome. "Where'd you go? Been looking for you everywhere." He grinned dazedly down at her, his words slurring ever so slightly. She fought back the urge to smile.
"I've been right here this whole time." she told him softly. João pouted, as though he wished he could have kept her glued to his side the whole night, rather than let him out of his sight, even for a second. She shook her head in bemusement.
"Mhm, good. You're not going anywhere else now." he shot back. His arms snaked around her, encircling her waist and pulling her into his chest, causing her eyes to widen at the sudden movement. Esperanza braced her hands on either of his shoulders. Her eyes narrowed. Up close, she could see through the hazy club lights and make out his features clearly: his blown pupils, pink cheeks, drooping eyelids...
"How much have you had to drink?" she giggled. João didn't answer her at first, leaning down to press a kiss to the column of her throat. Esperanza craned her neck around to see if Doutzen and Sophia were still there watching them. Luckily for her, they had both turned their attention elsewhere, presumably to give them a little privacy (or as a much was possible in a crowded club). At least there would be no embarrassing questions to answer after this was all over — or at least, not too many.
"Don't know... maybe two?" João murmured his response into her neck this time, where he left a trail of soft, gentle pecks onto her flushed skin. Esperanza felt her whole body heat up at his actions, but she couldn't bring herself to stop him.
"I think you've had a bit more than that, J." she breathed out. It got caught in her throat half way.
"Maybe." João pulled back to shoot her a lopsided grin. In the absence of his lips on her skin, she suddenly felt cold. It took a fair amount of questioning (and interrogating the perpetrators involved — Mason and Ben) to figure out how much João had had to drink. Apparently the players had been doing shots at the bar for half an hour; so his sudden clinginess made a lot of sense. Esperanza had to laugh when he tried to pull her closer, but only ended up tripping over his own feet and knocking some poor, unsuspecting person's drink out of their hands. So João was a clumsy drunk. She decided to make a mental note of that for future reference.
"Wanna dance?" he shouted over the music. At first Esperanza didn't hear him, so he moved closer so his mouth was next to her ear, and asked the same question again. She shivered at the feeling of his breath on her skin.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" she arched an eyebrow. João had already managed to almost knock over about ten people in the last few minutes, and they weren't even on the busiest part of the dance floor. Who knows what damage he could do while dancing. But João wouldn't take no for an answer. Esperanza yelped out in surprise as he took hold of her hand and dragged her onto the dance floor, turning over his shoulder to shoot her a grin. She huffed, though her annoyance lasted for all of a split second. João looked too happy for her to ruin it.
Neither of them knew how long they danced for — it could have been only a few minutes, but it also could have been hours. Time didn't seem to affect them anymore. Esperanza, against her better judgement, let him wrap her up in his arms, swaying them from side to side as she threw her hands up in the air. She didn't know the words to any of the songs, but she didn't mind. João's laughter in her ear was the only music she cared about. He dipped his head down to kiss her neck again, smiling into her skin. She could feel the upturn of his lips against her. Esperanza closed her eyes. For a moment, there was no one else in the room except them. They were completely wrapped up in each other. Everything else around them simply faded into the background.
The music slowed, and João captured her lips in a searing kiss. Suddenly, it didn't seem to matter that anyone could have been watching them; even taking pictures to share with the whole world afterwards, and burst their peaceful, perfect bubble. Esperanza gave in as he deepened the kiss, swallowing her whimper when his tongue slipped into her mouth. Her hands travelled slowly upwards, trailing over his chest where he'd undone a few more buttons, leaving his skin exposed. They darted to the gold chain hung around his neck, tugging on it to bring him even closer — impossibly close. João groaned against her mouth, his grip on her hips tightening. Esperanza looped her arms around his neck in response, her fingers beginning to play with the hair at the nape of his neck. She could feel him smiling now. His teeth caught against her bottom lip as he pulled away, biting down softly. Esperanza felt her stomach erupt with warmth. Something occurred to her then, prompted by the glint in his eye when he looked down at her, grinning. She'd never felt this way before — about anyone; and she knew it wasn't simply because this was her first taste of a proper relationship. There was just something special about João, something unexplainable, that drew her to him. Was this what falling in love was supposed to feel like?
"So beautiful." she heard João murmur faintly, "Meu anjo. Não posso acreditar que você é meu." I can't believe you're mine. Esperanza opened her mouth to ask what he'd said, but the words soon died in her throat. His lips found the flushed skin of her neck again. She sighed softly. He took that as an invite to kiss her again, rougher than before; hard enough to knock the breath out of her lungs. Esperanza felt like she was floating, but she had to fight to keep her head above the water. Everything around her was muffled — except him.
"J, there are people around." she came to her senses when João's hand began to wander dangerously low down the bare skin of her back. As much as his attention on her was nearly enough to make her cave completely, she'd rather not get caught in such a compromising positions by one of his fans. The consequences of simply being photographed with someone as high-profile as João Félix would most likely be dire for her, much less being spotted making out with him.
"I don't care." he groaned in response, pulling away only to press a sloppy kiss to her jaw. His eyes were darker than she'd ever seen them, boring into her own with a kind of intensity that made her skin prickle, "Let them watch."
Esperanza sighed, shaking her head. "João, you're drunk." she chuckled. Just like that, the darkness faded, replaced by a pout and what she thought was his best attempt at puppy-dog eyes. His head dropped to her shoulder as he whined, mumbling some sort of barely coherent denial. Esperanza threaded her fingers through his hair, and kissed his cheek tenderly.
"Come on. Let's get you home."
Though, that was easier said than done. They said their goodbyes without mishap — though Mason and Ben both made a point of wiggling their eyebrows suggestively and whistling as soon as they turned their backs to walk out of the club. Esperanza ordered them an Uber, as by now, João was much too out of it to even reach for his wallet. They stood by the side of the road, his arms wrapped around her protectively, caging her into his body. She allowed herself to sink back into his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of his cologne. It made her feel warm and safe in a way that she never had before, knowing that he was right there beside her.
When the Uber arrived, Esperanza climbed in first, João following closely behind her. His hand immediately found its home, rested on her thigh. She chose to ignore how dangerously high up his fingers wandered. A stern look and a gentle swat of his hand was all she needed to deter his antics for the moment — though, from the mischievous look in his eye, she had a feeling she'd be dealing with his wandering hands a few more times tonight.
Soon they were back at their apartment complex, clambering out of the car in a disorderly fashion. Esperanza practically had to drag João away to stop him from tipping the confused driver almost the entire contents of his wallet. Apologising sheepishly, she handed the driver a ten pound note in exchange, before taking hold of João's hand and guiding him into the complex. It was a wonder she even managed to get them both up to their floor safely, but somehow, within a few minutes, they were stood outside João's door.
"Keys?" she asked him in a whisper. Mrs Davies' apartment was only down the corridor, and she didn't particular want to face her wrath at the present moment — especially not while he was in such a state. The old woman would have a few choice words to say about it, she was sure.
"Pocket." João mumbled into her hair. But he made no move to retrieve them. Esperanza sighed. She was going to have to do it herself if she wanted any hope of getting back to her apartment tonight. Avoiding eye contact, she reached into the pocket of his pants, cursing internally as she realised his keys had, conveniently, buried themselves right at the very bottom. Esperanza could sense him watching her, but she refused to look up. This situation was embarrassing enough without him seeing how red her cheeks were.
She breathed a sigh of relief once the cool metal was safely in her hand, and turned away to unlock the door. Her hands, to her dismay, shook ever-so-slightly. It didn't help that the light in the corridor was so dim — she could hardly see what she was doing. After an agonizing few seconds, the sound of the door clicking open echoed through the hallway. Esperanza pushed it open triumphantly. Finally, she turned to look at João. He simply smiled.
It was strange not to hear Floki skitter across the floor to greet them as normal — but she figured he was probably already asleep. The apartment was plunged into almost complete darkness. She'd grown so familiar with it in the past couple of weeks, that she probably could have painted the interior from memory. However, in the dark, everything looked different. Shadows created shapes across the ground and in Esperanza's eyes, and every time she turned her head to find a new one, she just couldn't be sure if it was a trick of the light or if she was about to walk into something. João, in his drunken state, obviously wasn't any better at navigating than her. He hissed as he stubbed his toe on the frame of his bedroom door, almost falling flat on his face. He probably would have done, if Esperanza's arm hadn't been there to steady him.
"You ok?" she murmured into the darkness. João's lips parted soundlessly. He could just about make out her face, but none of the details. He wanted to see all of her; the deep brown of her eyes, the faint freckles dusted across her nose, the single dimple in her cheek when she smiled, and the soft curve of her cupid's bow. He had a vague idea of where the light switch was, so he leaned back and fell towards the wall, in the faint hope he would fall upon it. Esperanza gasped, darting forward to catch him. But then the lights came on. João straightened himself up, grinning widely.
"Hi." he beamed, stepping forwards slowly, crowding her into his arms. Esperanza let him walk her back until she felt her bare skin pressed against the wall. That familiar warmth pooled in her stomach. He was so close now, she could see every little detail of his beautiful face — perfections and imperfections alike. She loved all of it.
"Hi." she giggled in reply. João's face softened immediately. Then before she even knew what was happening, he swooped down and pressed his lips to hers; hot and heavy and bubbling with pent up frustration. Esperanza breathed an involuntary sigh of relief. Her fingers darted into his hair, tugging until she felt him moan into her mouth. His tongue darted across her bottom lip, probing for entrance. She gladly let him, parting her lips, kissing him back with everything she had in her.
João moved her away from the wall by her hips. His hands were everywhere all at once, leaving a trail that felt like fire on her skin. In any other situation, with anyone else but him, Esperanza would have slapped him away when they moved down to her ass — but as he squeezed gently, she merely smiled. This, whatever it would turn out to be, felt far too natural to stop. He'd never touched her like this before, but it felt like he knew every inch of her body; like he'd been exploring it his entire life. Esperanza pulled him closer, if such a thing was even possible. Slowly, he walked her backwards, until her legs met the end of his bed. She let him push her down onto the sheets and crawl over her body. His hands planted on either side of her head, and that stupid gold chain he always wore dangling in front of her face. She tugged on it, pulling him down to meet her in another kiss.
Once again, time seemed to slow, as if it didn't apply to them when they were connected like this. Esperanza ran her fingers through João's hair, listening to his soft whimpers as he nuzzled his face into her neck. His grip on her hips loosened, and his kisses became more languid; sleepy, even. He didn't have the energy to complain when she gently pushed him away, her hand on his chest forcing them both to sit up.
"You need to sleep, J." she said under her breath. João opened his mouth as if to protest, but his own body betrayed him, as he struggled to fight back a yawn. Esperanza giggled. She'd never seen him look so adorable; with his flushed cheeks, droopy eyes and half-pout. She just wanted to wrap him up in her arms and never let go.
Slowly, she helped him change out of his clubwear, into something more comfortable. She considered it a blessing that he was half asleep by now, otherwise he would have been smirking so widely she would have had to stop to cover her face in embarrassment. Esperanza tried her best not to look when she slipped his shirt off his shoulders, or when he sluggishly helped her push his pants down over his thighs, leaving him in nothing but his boxers. To her relief (or perhaps disappointment) she managed to get him into an oversized shirt before her eyes had the chance to wander too far. As soon as she'd finished folding his clothes, João fell back on the bed with a dull thud, burying his face into the pillows. Esperanza smiled. She didn't plan to stay once he'd fallen asleep — she still had to work in the morning, and besides, she didn't have a spare change of clothes in his apartment. For a moment, in the quiet, it seemed as though he'd fallen asleep already. Esperanza smiled a final time, before standing up and backing towards the door as quietly as possible. But a voice stopped her in her tracks.
"You promised you'd stay."
It was João. He mumbled the words into the pillow, but she heard them clearly. A sigh slipped past her lips. She thought vaguely of reminding him that she hadn't technically promised — 'I'll think about it', were her exact words, unless she was very much mistaken. But something about the way he was gazing hopefully up at her made her hesitate. Somehow, it felt wrong to leave him now, especially after the incredible night they'd shared. It felt, to her at least, that they'd opened up a new element of their relationship; a more intimate one. Esperanza suddenly realised, that fear of appearing so vulnerable to João was no longer there. That nagging thought in the back of her mind, the one that always prevented her from letting him in fully, had subsided. So instead of smiling apologetically and promising she'd make it up to him in, Esperanza walked to João's wardrobe, changing into the first of his t-shirts that she saw, and climbed into bed with him. Almost instantaneously, his arms wrapped around her waist, as he pulled her so close that she was all but lying on his chest. She listened to the steady beat of his heart. It felt like home. All of it. All of him.
"I think you're what I've been trying to find for the past two years." João said to her later, when the room was plunged into darkness, and the only sound to be heard was the combined rise and fall of their breathing. Esperanza looked up at him, her eyebrows furrowed, searching for any sign in his shadowy eyes that he was still drunk or confused in any way. None. He looked deadly serious.
"I just never realised it until now." João went on, "I tried to focus on football and training, but I always felt like something was missing." he turned his head to look her in the eye, "You were missing."
Esperanza felt like crying, but she swallowed down the lump in her throat quickly, "João..." she stammered.
"You don't have to say anything." he interrupted with a soft chuckle, "This isn't — I'm not going to ask you to be my girlfriend. Not right now. I'm not ready for that yet."
Esperanza watched curiously as he sucked in a deep, shuddering breath. Her heart lurched. She could sense, when he opened his mouth, that whatever he was about to tell her was important. She had always prided herself on being able to read people well, and in this moment, she was reminded of all the times she had sensed João was holding something back from her. Esperanza never had the courage to ask him about it. She figured he would tell her himself when the time was right — when he trusted her enough. Something in her gut told her, now was the right time to open up, just as she had done with him.
"I — I've never even considered the possibility of dating again for over two years." João spoke almost in a whisper. Esperanza hung on to his every word, "I'm always too scared. Scared that, if I let myself open up, I'll get my heart broken again. So I figured it was better to be closed off than risk getting hurt."
He breathed out shakily. Esperanza reached out to run her hand through his hair soothingly, watching as his eyes closed and his heart rate beneath her ear, which was still laid on his chest, slowed.
"My ex-girlfriend cheated on me." João spoke, "Three times, as far as I'm aware. Or it could be more, I really don't know." he sighed. Esperanza could do nothing but watch as his jaw clenched in anger, and he glanced down through misty eyes brimming with tears to shoot her a weak smile. Her heart broke for him then. She could only imagine the pain he must have experienced. Her lips peppered his jaw with soft kisses, as she prayed that whatever small actions of reassurance she could provide would at least help to make him feel a little better — to show that she was here for him.
"I loved her so much, I couldn't even bring myself to leave after the first time." he went on, "I kept telling myself it had to be me that was the problem — I had to be doing something wrong. So I stayed, and I tried to fix it. But she —she was the problem." he sighed, "Not me. It's taken me two years to realise that, you know?" he turned now to look at her fully in the eye, "For two fucking years, I've been too terrified of getting hurt again to let myself open up."
Esperanza's hand trailed down from his hair to his warm cheek, brushing away a stray tear.
"I'm not gonna hurt you, João." she whispered into his ear, holding him as he buried his face in her hair, "Not now, and not ever, ok?"
João looked up at her through misty eyes, "You promise?" he sniffled.
"I promise."
She kissed the crown of his head, pulling him into her chest, where he sighed contentedly. It was warm, laying side by side, but not just in the physical sense. Esperanza's heart felt warm too. She held on to that feeling as they both drifted into a dreamless slumber, clinging on to each other through bedsheets and clothes, as if they both knew, deep down, this moment, despite all promises, couldn't last.
