So I realise I take my life in my hands by asking this... But in a hypothetical situation where I wanted to investigate the Fire Emblem series... Where should I begin?
OH HO!!!!
Okay, well to preface this I have to say I have only played (technically) six Fire Emblem games. Also, all the recommendations I can give are for console.
For beginners I think the best option is Awakening. Yes, it’s the standard answer, however Awakening brought in many mechanics into the game play that are very helpful to new comers to the franchise. The maps are fun and with the choice between classic mode and casual mode, it’s a fun middle ground for difficulty setting. The story in my mind is great and I really enjoy the characters.
(If you don’t want to try Awakening, another option is Fates. Now, Fates is a bit tricky because it has three different stories. If you want to try Fates out I recommend you play IN THIS ORDER: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations.)
(Also, if you’re wondering about Heroes, it’s best to have some background before trying the mobile game as it has MASSIVE SPOILERS with some of the units/ descriptions.)
But basically I think the best option is Awakening. Of course, I’m not as familiar with the older titles to Fire Emblem. My neighbour did play Radiant Dawn/ Path of Radiance when we were kids and I do remember those titles being a little harder. Also, those are Game Cube/ Wii games so…
**EDIT: ALSO!!! You need not know the other games in the franchise to enjoy them (apart from some rare games which are sequels to each other, as the before mentioned RD/PoR). Of course there is some lore thrown around, but it’s more fun Easter Egg stuff.
