An Iconic Welsh Indie Band And An Ace Singer/Songwriter With A Punk Past Are The Latest Acts To Support Crisis
Stuart Mason’s short bio for All Music provides a neat introduction to the iconic indie band Helen Love: “Formed in Cardiff in 1992, the band consisted of the pseudonymous Helen Love on bratty shout-along vocals, Sheena, who is, of course, a punk rocker on buzzsaw guitars, and Roxy and Mark on duelling Casio keyboards, which also doubled as drum machines. Their low-tech, high-energy sound landed them on the estimable U.K. indie Damaged Goods, where they released their statement of purpose with "Formula One Racing Girls" in 1993. The unabashedly adulatory "Joey Ramoney" followed in 1994, itself followed by "Punk Boy," a giant step melodically and lyrically. Helen Love's next step was the 10" EP Summer Pop/Punk Pop, a five-song celebration of "Summer Pop Radio" and related activities that are like a '90s U.K. indie answer to the Beach Boys’ Summer days (And Summer Nights).
Their final release for Damaged Goods, the four-song We Love You EP, was probably their strongest work, but a dispute with the label led to the group signing with the slightly larger Che imprint in 1997. The resulting EPs, Does Your Heart Go Boom and Long Live the UK Music Scene, were made without Sheena, but she was back on board for the group's first full-length album, 2000's Love and Glitter, Hot Days and Muzik. The album was reissued a year later by Damaged Goods with extra tracks added”.
That is just the beginning, there are many more chapters in the tall tale of Helen Love, including guest appearances by the likes of John Peel, Phil Jupitus, Tim Wheeler and Gareth Bale, to name just a few.
Tumblr media
Asked by David Owen, in an interview for Nation.Cymru, about the highs and lows of her pop odyssey, the singer named “a Peel session, two Radcliffe sessions, a Lamacq session, staying with Joey (Ramone) for a week, playing Primavera, working with lots of cool indie labels, making some lifelong friends, releasing a ton of 7-inch singles loads of stuff. The lows. None. We never became big enough to fall down, we are not in debt to any label, we never shot up heroin with Kate Moss in a back street pub in Camden. I have never had to watch the Stereophonics. It’s all been good”.
The band’s latest album Songs from Under the Bed Vol II was released in May this year, and you can catch the band at Le Pub in Newport on the 18th of November. It’s just a month before Christmas, so maybe they will give “The Townhall Band”, their contribution to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas, an airing?

Amos Pitsch is the frontman with Tenement, a punk/hardcore band from Wisconsin. Formed in 2006, their latest album Music Composed for the Motion Picture Smother Me in Hugs was released in 2019. Pitsch released his debut solo album Lake Effect in 2017. A review quoted on his Bandcamp page explains the background to the album: “Lake Effect was designed as a sort of conceptual seasonal album. It deals with the feelings and the psyche of the victims of a Midwestern American winter; the ups and downs - the nostalgia, the beauty, the depression, the bitter cold. A lifetime resident of the Fox River Valley - a geographical region vulnerable to brutal sub-zero winters, and rich with iconic rural midwestern imagery as well as small dusty towns acting as time pieces for decades gone by. The supper clubs, the patch-work farmland, the snow ploughs, ice shanties and road salt are in his blood."
Tumblr media
Asked about his fondest Christmas memory in an interview with Post Trash, Pitsch gave this answer: 'Strangely, I think my most enduring memories of Christmas are the dark car rides between visiting relatives and attending church services as a child. Looking out at the empty night whizzing by through the windows and anticipating the following morning with a sense of dreaming that I can hardly fathom now. I also have a really distinct frozen frame in my mind of being a child and climbing a staircase of red carpeting in a large church. Burning candles, red velvet, and feet in dress shoes shuffling around. I guess you could say that a childish sense of innocence about the world that I once had when I was young is my fondest memory.

Thanks For All And Happy Watching! TELEVISION SHOW AND HISTORY A television show (often simply TV show) is any content produced for broadcast via over-the-air, satellite, cable, or internet and typically viewed on a television set, excluding breaking news, advertisements, or trailers that are typically placed TNTween shows. Television shows are most often scheduled well ahead of time and appear on electronic guides or other TV listings. A television show might also be called a television program (British English: programme), especially if it lacks a narrative structure. A television series is usually released in episodes that follow a narrative, and are usually divided into seasons (US and Canada) or series (UK) — yearly or semiannual sets of new episodes. A show with a limited number of episodes may be called a miniseries, serial, or limited series. A one-time show may be called a “special”. A television film (“made-for-TV movie” or “television movie”) is a film that is initially broadcast on television rather than released in theaters or direct-to-video. The first national color broadcast (the 021521 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 021, 021521. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 021375, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 0212137, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season.
FORMATS AND GENRES Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional series). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows. A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 021210s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little. If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order. Since the 021210s, many series feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television series to have this kind of dramatic structure, while the later series Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run. In 37002137, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film. Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 37002137, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.

Every year, I look for important themes in sustainability that will have lasting impact on society, from glaring evidence of global megatrends to inspiring stories of corporate action. The year 2018 brought extreme change — in weather and environmental ecosystems, in political winds and power, and in the expectations of business. It also brought incredible clarity about the scale of our challenges and opportunities.
So let’s start with the big picture before moving to some corporate success stories.
The world’s scientists sound a final alarm on climate
We have about 12 years left. That’s the clear message from a monumental studyfrom the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). To avoid some of the most devastating impacts of climate change, the world must slash carbon emissions by 45% by 2030, and completely decarbonize by 2050 (while, in the meantime, emissions are still rising).
The IPCC looked at the difference between the world “only” warming two degrees Celsius (3.8°F) — the agreed upon goal at global climate summits in Copenhagen and Paris — or holding warming to just 1.5 degrees. Even the latter, they say, will require a monumental effort “unprecedented in terms of scale.” We face serious problems either way, but every half degree matters a great deal in human, planetary, and economic losses.
It wasn’t just the IPCC that told a stark story. Thirteen U.S. government agencies issued the U.S. National Climate Assessment, which concluded that climate change could knock at least 10% off of GDP. Other studies tell us that sea level rise is going to be worse than we thought, Antarctica is melting three times faster than a decade ago, and Greenland is losing ice quickly as well. If both those ice sheets go, sea level rise could reach 200-plus feet, resulting in utter devastation, including the loss of the entire Atlantic seaboard (Boston, New York, D.C., etc.), all of Florida, London, Stockholm, Denmark, Uruguay and Paraguay, and land now inhabited by more than 1 billion Asians.
All of this suggests that business must dramatically change how it operates: companies will need to push well past their comfort zones from areas like politics and policy to engaging consumers to how they make investment decisions.
Entire towns are wiped off the map by extreme weather
This year the weather devastation around the world got, in the words of one colleague, “biblical.” The town of Paradise, California, was effectively eliminated by wildfires (that, yes, are made worse by climate change), killing at least 85 people. Most houses in Mexico Beach, Florida, were destroyed by Hurricane Michael. Unprecedented rains and damage from Hurricane Florence slammed North Carolina and temporarily turned a major highway into a river. Typhoon Mangkhut ravagedthe Philippines and parts of China, killing dozens of people. Incredible heat blanketed four continents this summer, with records falling across Europe and Asia. Venezuela’s last glacier is disappearing. Finally, Capetown, South Africa, is essentially out of water due in part to drought — the city nearly shut off all the taps this year, but has held off “Day Zero” through ongoing restrictions and aggressive citizen action.
The consequences of these extremes are not theoretical. What is the economic cost to an area with no water, or one that’s under water, or burned to the ground? In the U.S. alone, it was $306 billion in 2017, shattering records.
Coral is dying, insects are disappearing, and the fate of major ecosystems looks dim
The world’s top coral expert confirms that at 2 degrees of warming, all coral will die. This will destroy a critical part of an ocean system that provides protein to hundreds of millions of people, helps blunt coastal storm surges, and supports the livelihoods of people working in fishing and tourism.
And it’s not just coral: there’s the death of pacific kelp forests, radical declines in insect populations, and continuing population drops in all mammals and bees.
How does this all connect to business? For some sectors, it’s obvious: the food and agriculture industry will have trouble feeding us without pollinators, and tourism takes a big hit without coral and other wildlife. But more broadly, society will not thrive in a world where entire pillars of planetary support are collapsing. And if society can’t thrive, neither can business.
The U.S. environmental protection system continues being dismantled … from within
The EPA and Department of Interior are reversing years of protections for air, water, and land. In 2018, the Trump administration has opened up offshore waters and rolled back safety rules for drilling, greatly weakened the voice of science in policy, reduced focus on children’s health, and moved to make it easier to build dirty coal plants.
The big question now is whether businesses will push back and go down a cleaner path on their own. It’s easy to see why multinationals might as they face pressure from sub-national regions — California Gov. Jerry Brown held a Global Climate Action Summit which produced many aggressive climate goals from cities and state, for example. Gov. Brown also signed aggressive new laws committing to carbon-free electricity statewide by 2045 and requiring solar on all new homes. So even if U.S. action sputters, governors and mayors who influence local and regional business conditions will be pushing the clean economy and pro-climate agendas.
In pointed contrast to the U.S., the EU backed a proposal to strike no new trade deals with countries not in the Paris climate accord (i.e., only the U.S.), France will shut coal plants by 2021, India just cancelled plans for big coal plants, and China banned 500 inefficient models of cars.
A prominent leader retires, but new leaders step up
For nearly a decade, no business leader has done more to bring sustainability into the business mainstream than Paul Polman, Unilever’s outgoing CEO (Full disclosure: I’ve worked with Unilever). His depth of understanding of our biggest global, social, and environmental challenges, and his commitment to use business as a way to tackle them, has been unparalleled. But it wasn’t just talk. The company also grew throughout Polman’s tenure and the stock outperformed peers and the FTSE index. Luckily, there are other corporate leaders who are stepping up, including Danone’s Emmanuel Faber (see below for more).
But climate isn’t the only area where we’re seeing bold stances. Societal issues more broadly made headlines, too. The New York Times declared 2018 year that “CEO activism has become the new normal,” with prominent voices like Salesforce’s Marc Benioff leading the way. Other notable moments include Nike making Colin Kaepernick — the man who led NFL player protests about police violence against African Americans — the face of its 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign (sales rose quickly). Under pressure from survivors of school mass shootings, Dick’s Sporting Goods stopped selling assault weapons, and other companies cut ties to the powerful National Rifle Association. Kroger celebrated a year of its “End Hunger” initiative. Unilever threatened to pull its substantial ad dollars from Facebook and Google if they didn’t police “fake news and toxic content.” One hundred U.S. CEOs urged action on controversial immigration issues. And more than 100 U.S. companies gave employees time off to vote.
Danone North America becomes the world’s largest B Corporation
A “B Corp” certification requires answering an intensive set of questions on environmental, social, and governance issues. But most importantly, it commits a company to create value for all stakeholders (customers, employees, communities, and so on), not just shareholders.
French consumer products giant Danone has now put 30% of its brands and businesses through the certification process and says that “companies are fundamentally challenged as to whose interests they really serve.” Becoming a B Corp is arguably is a direct statement about whose interests it values most, and it’s and fascinating frontal attack on the dominance of shareholder capitalism.
More investors are viewing climate and sustainability as core value issues
Something is shifting in finance. Vanguard wants CEOs to be a force for good. Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, said that “70% of [UK] banks, who normally have a shorter horizon, are viewing climate as a financial risk—not a CSR one.” Larry Fink, CEO of Blackrock, the world’s largest asset owner, encouraged longer-term thinking about environmental, social, and governance issues in a strongly-worded letter to large-company CEOs.
Anecdotally, I’ve talked to leaders at big banks who are now thinking differently about purpose and systemic risk. And in a quieter move, a major real estate investor in Miami began pulling money out of coastal assets to avoid risk of sea level rise. Watch this space.
The clean technology explosion continues and accelerates
Three big clean tech themes wowed me this year.
1) Renewables keep getting cheaper. According to Lazard’s annual analysis of the cost of building new power plants, renewables are now the cheapest. And another global analysis showed that new wind and solar are cheaper than one-third of the coal already on the grid — and will be cheaper than 96% of existing plants by 2030.
2) Corporate buying of clean energy keeps rising. By the end of just the first half of 2018, businesses bought more clean energy than they did in 2017. Companies like Owens Corning (disclosure: a client of mine) are buying enough green energy to pitch their products as cleanly manufactured (which they started doing in late 2017).
3) Electric vehicle sales are exploding, and it’s not just small vehicles: even container ships are going electric. UPS bought its first EV delivery vehicles at price parity to combustion engines, and China is adding nearly 10,000 electric buses to the roads — equal to the size of London’s entire bus fleet – every five weeks.
China rejects the world’s trash
For years, the U.S. had a great deal: When container ships arrived from China with goods, we sent them back filled with our recyclable paper and glass. But starting January 1, 2018, China stopped accepting our trash. The ripples of this move are unpredictable and still moving through the system, but in some regions, materials piled up and prices for recycled content plummeted. In a business world trying to go “circular” (i.e., find a use for everything and eliminate waste), it was a wake-up call about how much waste we still produce.
The battle against single-use plastic heats up, starting (somewhat oddly) with straws
Sometimes weird things hit a tipping point. For a combination of reasons, including a viral video showing a turtle with a straw stuck in its nose, companies waged war on straws this year. Marriott, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Burger King, and the city of Seattle, among others, all banned or are phasing out straws. It was a very small part of a larger conversation about “single-use plastics,” most notably plastic bags, which IKEA and Taiwan are banning as well.
Raising the bar for suppliers
The greening of the supply chain is a perennial story, but there are some noteworthy recent actions. Apple created a $300 million fund to help suppliers in China build more solar, and also partnered with Alcoa and Rio Tinto to develop a better smelting process to make carbon-free aluminum. On the labor side of the supply chain equation, PepsiCo and Nestle cut ties with a palm oil supplier over human rights abuses and Coca-Cola said it would work with the U.S. State Department to use blockchain to fight forced labor.
Meatless options grow plentiful
Given the way most cattle is currently raised, one of the most effective things an individual can do to reduce her carbon footprint is eat less meat. The options to do so are growing, and the rise of products made from non-animal proteins has been remarkable. The Impossible Burger, Beyond Meat, and other brands have made believers out of skeptics (they taste great) and are, as the Wall Street Journal put it, “overrunning grocery meat cases.” In another fascinating move, tech company WeWork went meat-free in its offices and even stopped reimbursing employees on business trips for meat meals.
What comes next…
I’m sure I missed many stories, especially globally (my view is from the U.S.). Predictions are hard, but I’m safe in assuming 2019 will be a bumpy ride again. Ultimately, today’s global political situation is, at best, unpredictable. Brazil now has a strongman-style leader who talks about cutting down the Amazon, but the U.S. just swung its House of Representatives back the other way, giving power to Democrats who want more focus on climate change, inequality, and other sustainability agenda items. No matter what happens politically, it seems clear that companies will continue to feel pressure, internally and externally, to do more on social and environmental issues. While the problems face we are extremely serious, I remain optimistic that companies will be doing more in 2019 than ever before.

Olly Alexander on harnessing the power of sexual fantasy in pop
The Years & Years frontman talks about owning his queer sexuality in the mainstream and writing a twisted disco album about ‘holy wood’
Owen Myers
9 March 2018
“It’s like my Rihanna Loud era,” declares Olly Alexander, before breaking into a laugh. The Years & Yearsfrontman is referring to his cropped curly hair, which is freshly coloured to the hue of a nice Merlot. It’s a cold February evening, and he’s puffing on a roll-up while huddled in the fire exit doorway of a Camden venue. His new dye job has to be kept under wraps, he explains, until its official unveiling in the band’s new video. “It’s so stupid,” Olly says with an eye roll. He then flashes me a grin, suggesting that this moment of starry subterfuge is not entirely unwelcome.
Olly Alexander really likes being a pop star. He says that it’s full of “fairytale” moments, like when his Years & Years earnings enabled him to buy his mum a house, or when he and his ex-boyfriend, Neil Milan (formerly of Clean Bandit), became embraced as British pop’s new golden couple. After winning the BBC Sound poll in 2015, Years & Years’ earworm synth pop was everywhere. They had an inescapable number one single, “King”, and their album Communion was the fastest selling debut that year from a signed British band. Olly says that there are downsides to the tabloid headlines and Twitter trolls that come along with being “a public gay man” – a phrase that he puts in self-deprecating air quotes. But right now, those pressures feel far away, as he prepares to change into a bright pink boiler suit and play to a boozed-up Saturday night crowd, at an Annie Mac-curated showcase. Or, as he put it on Twitter earlier today: bring his “gay agenda” to The Roundhouse.
Years & Years’ great new single, “Sanctify”, contrasts lurking vocals with an ecstatic synth-fuelled chorus, and is as unapologetic as any of Olly’s pithy social media posts. He was newly single when he wrote the song, and reading Andrew Holleran’s 1978 chronologue of gay desire, Dancer From the Dance, had got him thinking about a couple of hookups he’d had with straight-identifying men. “It would always be under darkness,” he says. “It had this added layer of eroticism because it was somewhat forbidden. But (being with me) was a window where they could be themselves, and I felt responsible not to fuck them up.” Those conflicting feelings come through in evocative lyrics about obscuring masks and sinful confessions, with a climax that’s about as on-the-nose as chart pop gets. “I sanctify my sins when I pray,” says Olly, quoting the chorus’s payoff. “What do you do what you pray? You get on your knees. So is it a sexual baptism?” He laughs. “I was just like, ‘There’s a lot to work with here.’”
Years & Years are a three-piece, but the other two members, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen, tend to hunker down behind synths and let Olly take centre stage. His soul-searching lyrics give the band’s maximalist pop its heart, with a singing voice that pierces through a constellation of synths. Their videos bring acts which are often shrouded in darkness into the light, showing the singer cruising in a dank car park, or at a pansexual orgy. The new “Sanctify” visual riffs on dom/sub culture, with an elaborate sci-fi plot that is a device for Olly to perform “Slave 4 U”-inspired dance moves to an audience of androids. When he was commissioned to write a song for the Bridget Jones franchise, he made it about bottoming. “I have sex, I enjoy sex,” he says flatly. He’s sitting in his cosy dressing room the Roundhouse, which rumbles with bass as Disclosure and Mabel soundcheck next door. “In the past, I think gay men (in pop) have often shied away from being overtly sexual, or being commanding of their sexuality. But I believe that our sexual fantasies are a big drive for us all. Exploring that side of yourself is super empowering.”
In the past year or so, many well-known LGBTQ artists have begun to bring queerness into their music in sex-positive ways. Pop’s boy-next-door Troye Sivan strapped on Tom Of Finland leathers for a back alley moment with well-fluffed trade, Janelle Monáe caressed women’s bare thighs, Fever Ray returned with a concept album about queer kink. For better or worse, Sam Smith is now calling himself a “dick monster”on primetime telly. “Sometimes seeing a man express themselves in an overtly sexual way, especially a gay man, makes certain conservative people feel a bit uncomfortable,” Olly says. “I always wanna keep people a little uncomfortable.”
“I believe that our sexual fantasies are a big drive for us all. Exploring that side of yourself is super empowering” – Olly Alexander
Years & Years are far from the first mainstream British pop act to proudly put gay sexuality at the centre of their music – that’s a lineage that runs from Will Young to George Michael, Pet Shop Boys to Bronski Beat, and beyond. But Olly’s performances are a reminder that mainstream pop can be open to explicit queerness (at least, when it’s embodied in a handsome white cis man). Olly has faith that you don’t have to be “generic to be palatable,” and that “straight guys can hear a song that I’ve written about being fucked by another guy, but still relate.” LGBTQ+ people like me grew up seeing straight culture pretty much everywhere; seeing more of our community thrive is crucial.
Growing up in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, Olly was a flamboyant kid. That got him bullied at school, called a “batty boy” before he was even aware that he was gay, and meant that he retreated into drama lessons. While acting, he felt it was okay – a good thing, even – to be expressive. He always nurtured a passion for music, too; he taught himself how to play Joni Mitchell songs on piano, and obsessed over “Dirrty”-era Christina Aguilera. An early performance at a year six assembly blended intimate songwriting and outré entertainment: Olly played piano and sang lyrics about lost love, while two of his friends did a dance routine.
In his late teens and early 20s, Olly cropped up in whimsical micro-budget indie films like 2011’s The Dish And The Spoon, alongside Greta Gerwig, as well as Gaspar Noé’s Enter The Void, and Skins. But his early experiences at school stayed with him. “Your first encounter with your sexuality is often from people bullying you and calling you the thing that you just pray to god that you won’t be – but deep down suspect you might be,” Olly says. “Well, no wonder we have an incredibly conflicting relationship with our bodies and our sexualities, because we’ve had to experience all of that.”
Reflecting on these difficult early years in his dressing room, Olly speaks openly about his own decade-long experience with depression, and the inadequate NHS provisions for those who are struggling with mental health. LGBTQ+ folks disproportionately struggle with depression and substance abuse, he recognises, and there’s only one UK organisation, London Friend, that caters directly to the specific needs of the queer community. “I’ve been there,” says Olly. “They’re amazing, but they are over-subscribed, with a tiny office, old chairs, and not a lot of money. When you’re seeing that people aren’t getting the help they should be, there’s an issue there.” That’s something he knows from first-hand experience. Last year, Olly fronted a BBC documentary, Growing Up Gay, about young LGBTQ+ people struggling with their mental health. His openness around the subject made him a kind of ambassador for those struggles, and he’s trying to work out how to deal with the “almost daily” DMs he gets from people at their lowest moments. “I feel very privileged that someone is wanting to share that with me, but it’s frightening,” he says. “We’re all in fucking pain, and I don’t know if we’re communicating with each other that well.”
“What do we expect a male pop star to do? As a society, how do we want them to behave or present themselves?” – Olly Alexander
Years & Years’ second album, out later this year, mixes gliding pop melodies with churning bass and twisted disco. The new songs feel more varied and exploratory than Communion, thanks in part to new collaborators like current pop’s minimalist masterminds Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, as well as Greg Kurstin, who co-wrote “Shine”, Years & Years’ best song to date. The album’s centred around a motif of Palo Santo, a healing incense-like wood that you burn and waft around a room. (Olly dramatises this with hand motions as if he’s conducting an invisible orchestra.) Perhaps Palo Santo, with its power to expel evil spirits, could be a metaphor for the songwriting process? Maybe, Olly says. “But (when writing the album) I was angry about loads of things, particularly men. Palo Santo literally means ‘holy wood’ and I was like, ‘This is fucking perfect.’ Like, thinking that your dick is holy? I’ve known guys like that.”
Years & Years’ renewed vision also extends to creating a futuristic universe for their new music to exist in. That’s an idea that Olly’s idols – “Bowie, Prince, and Gaga” – have embraced, and “Sanctify” is the first part of an interconnected series of “weird, wonderful” videos. It marks the next step for a band aiming to join British pop’s pantheon, at a time when Olly, too, has been reflecting on his place in music. “What do we expect a male pop star to do?” he questions. “As a society, how do we want them to behave or present themselves? If I was asking myself, it would be like, ‘Well actually, I’ve always loved this kind of popstar. Maybe I should just be the pop star I want to see in the world.”

Defund the BBC Now!
Tumblr media
— By Jon Gaunt | 07.10.2020 | Sputnik
I’m disgusted with their failure to make real cuts to their bloated budget and as a result to means test pensioners, the most vulnerable members of society, to see who can have a free TV licence.
Meanwhile, Gary Lineker still needs a reinforced wheelbarrow to pick up hundreds of thousands of our hard-earned cash.
Last week the BBC committed to spend £100 MILLION to be "diverse and inclusive" but clearly, in their myopic world view, pensioners do NOT fall into the diverse or inclusive bracket? Well, there's a surprise! Not.
No Taxation Without Representation
Like the American Revolution, I firmly believe in the statement above. And let's be honest the Biased Broadcasting Corporation doesn't represent me or you anymore.
It certainly didn't respect, let alone represent my views on Brexit, Donald Trump, the election of Boris and Black Lives Matter.
I don't want them to pursue my agenda. I just want the equal opportunity to put my point across or someone else to do it for me and for the presenter to drop the sneers, the raised eyebrow and the outright contempt for any opinion to the right of Karl Marx.
Tumblr media

I am sick to the back teeth with their bias and metropolitan woke view of the world and so I have come to the decision that they can stick their compulsory poll tax where the sun don't shine.
To be frank they don't need to worry about giving out a few free TV licences to some OAPs because soon no one will be paying it.
Broadcast Revolution
I can live without the BBC as easy as I can live without a hole in the head and so can millions of others, who just like me are cancelling their direct debits and not watching the biased bilge they pump out.
Who watches live TV these days anyway? The word has moved on but the BBC refuses to wake up and smell the real coffee whilst they sip their skinny soya lattes.
Forget the American Revolution, there is a broadcast revolution going on and it is not going to be televised by the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation.
I've got Netflix and Amazon Prime for all my movies and box sets and I've got the internet for my news and radio from around the globe. I just simply do not need the BBC's FAKE news anymore.
I'm not alone either as according to the Times, 860 THOUSAND licences were cancelled in 2017/18 and that figure must be well into the millions by now. Everybody I speak too says that not only is the fee too much, it's also an insult to our intelligence to have pay for something even if we don't watch it.
In the multi-platform digital age, you pay for what you watch, not what Auntie wants to serve up and let's be honest if you’re cute you don't have to pay for anything, not that I would encourage piracy of course.
A Kick in the Teeth
I worked for the BBC on a freelance basis for years and worked with many very talented people but to be frank I don’t recognise this biased anti-British, anti-working class, woke, lefty, politically correct institution anymore.
They've even given up pretending that they are balanced or impartial as their arrogance knows no bounds.
Why has the brilliant political interviewer, Andrew Neil been sent to the "news gulag" whilst biased Emily Maitlis shares her bile and woke anti-Trump agenda with her dwindling number of viewers on Newsnight?
Why did they bin Andrew Neil's and Michael Portillo's brilliant This Week show, how much dosh did they save with that decision?
Why have they decided to cut local radio and regional TV instead of focusing on the middle management pen pushers that infest the BBC?
Tumblr media

Local radio is the only part of the BBC that should be funded by the public purse the rest could be scrapped, sold off or slashed.
And by that, I mean privatise Radio 2 and Radio 1. Scrap the dreadful Five Live, we've got TalkSport and LBC who can do their job much better and cheaper.
As for the nobs who say they can't live without the Today programme or the Archers well they earn enough to flipping pay for it.
With the advent of Times radio and app-based transmission, there is no excuse to not privatise these services.
Why didn't they cut their diversity programmes instead of giving pensioners a kick in the teeth as Age UK so eloquently put it yesterday?
Diversity – What Diversity?
Talking of real diversity, how come the commentators they get on as guests and newspaper reviewers (who buys a bloody paper now anyway?) are the same goons who got the Brexit result wrong and the Boris landslide spectacularly incorrect?
But these same muppets are back on the same sofas, in the same studios saying the same stuff. Who are they meant to represent because it certainly isn't me?
It's not just the News programmes that are infested with woke lefty bias either; just look at the only dramas that get commissioned or filmed. Thin plots are bulked out with the same biased metropolitan view of the world. Who's the script editor on these shows, Jeremy Corbyn or is it Owen Jones?

Meanwhile, EastEnders is so busy pushing an agenda it makes the left-wing playwright Bertolt Brecht look like Noel Coward.
Ever since Doctor Who was revived every plot has to have a message and hammer home the woke inclusive agenda. What was wrong with the Cybermen, Daleks, the Brigadier and long flowing scarves and the Doctors assistant screaming as she ran down the same corridor every week?! I'm kind of joking.
Sport? Well the BBC hasn't got any, have they? In fact, they have had more during Covid-19 with the football being free to air!!
Comedy? Have you ever seen a right of centre comedian on one of those formulaic comedy quiz shows, instead of its wall to wall anti-British, left-wing, didactic sub-Marxist trash from the likes of that Nish guy? He's as funny as a dose of the proverbial. But that style of comedy infests and has infected all of the BBC comedy output.
Look, if you like this kind of stuff that is your choice but I just don’t want to have to pay for it and I certainly don’t see why a lonely old pensioner should either.
Defund the BBC now!

FA335 CREATIVE PROJECT
Tumblr media
Hello Dino Lovers! Welcome to our blog!
What is Fan Fiction?
Fandoms provide interesting and inclusive opportunities for individuals to acknowledge and interact with movies, television shows, art, music, celebrities and so on. A particular outlet of fan interaction is fan fiction—fiction written about characters and settings from an original piece, created by followers and supporters rather than the creator themselves. Malin Isaksson describes fan fiction as:
“A creative and free text-type, open to possibilities of developing a story in directions not foreseen by the canon’s creators and for pairing characters who do not form couples in the canon, for example creating slash/femslash. However, the general rule in fan fiction is that writers respect the logic of that canon regarding plot, style and the characters personalities“ (Isaksson).
Within fan fiction, slash and femslash fiction—fiction written about same sex relations between characters—has grown into a popular sub-genre of fan literature. In this blog post, we will examine what slash and femslash fiction is, its history, and whom it is written by and for. We will explore this subject using the Jurassic Park franchise. Then, we will take a stab at writing slash and femslash fiction ourselves.
 Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park and Jurassic World provide intensely interactive plots, fascinating character development and enchanting cinematography. It is apart of an enterprise that has inspired numerous sequels, adaptions, merchandise, amusement and even slash fiction. In fact, over the past 20 years its fan base has continuously grown into a thriving and inclusive fandom. As childhood fans of the original film, our love for Jurassic Park was reinvigorated with the 2015 release of Jurassic World.
Tumblr media
So, lets explore fiction, fan-fiction and slash-fan fiction, shall we?
 Why Fiction in General:
Before we begin, lets closely analyze human beings’ fascination with fiction more generally. Tooby and Cosmides (2001) argue that our involvement in fictional and imagined worlds appears to be “a human universal” (Salmon and Symon 94). In fact, they argue two possible explanations as to why humans create and consume fictional representations. First, “human engagement in fictional experience is a functionless byproduct of psychological adaptions that were designed by natural selection to serve other functions.” In other words, our engagement in fictional experience is not something we were designed to do, but rather something we are susceptible to doing (Salmon and Symon 95). The second explanation is “that human engagement in fictional experience is in itself an adaption; that is something we are designed to do” (Salmon and Symon 95).  Whatever argument you may find more convincing, there is no doubt that human beings love interacting with fiction!
 What is Slash Fiction?
At the surface, it is fan fiction written about characters of the same sex. Slash fiction originated in the 1970s. To be considered true slash fiction, “lovers must be an expropriated media paring, such as Captain Kirk and Spock” (Salmon and Symon 94). The term “slash” arose “from the convention of using the slash punctuation mark to unite the lovers’ names or initials” (Salmon and Symon 94). Interestingly, it is almost exclusively written by and for women (Salmon and Symon 94). Throughout slash fiction’s growth in popularity, nearly every cop, spy, adventure and science fiction TV series featuring male cast members were “slashed” (Salmon and Symon 94). In part, slash fiction’s growth in popularity was because of the creation of the Internet (Salmon and Symon 94). Lastly, Slash fiction arose spontaneously at the same time in the US, the UK, Germany, Australia, and Canada (Salmon and Symon 94). There is no doubt that slash-fiction is popular, specifically amongst female audiences, but the question remains why?
Tumblr media
Why is Slash-Fiction so Popular amongst Women?
There are a number of theories that argue why slash fiction is so popular amongst female audiences. Ika Willis has said,
“Through my involvement in slash, I have developed terms and practices which enable me to live more comfortably in my body and with a sense of my own gendered identification(s), which works for me. In fact, slash has worked both to sustain my lifelong boy-identification and to solidify and strengthen my (in some ways more precarious) identification as a woman” (Willis 292).
Therefore, slash fiction provides an opportunity for individuals to explore sex, sexuality and gender, and the complicated intersection of these identities. In addition, Willis argues that we have a corporal body and felt body. The corporal refers to our literal and physical body and the felt body is metaphorical—whether you feel more masculine or feminine, or perhaps neither. Therefore, “an individual—cis or trans—may, in practice, experience a gendered disjunction” between these two bodies. (Willis 303).  This disjunction can be explored within slash fiction and can help “strengthen” ones identification.
 What is Femslash?
Femslash is a subgenre of slash fiction—fan creations written about lesbian relationships. It has gained increasing popularity amongst fan communities. Femslash as a phenomenon occurred later than slash fiction. While fans were slashing Kirk and Spock together since the 70s, female slashing became popular a few decades after. Malin Isaksson argues that femslash really grew in popularity in part because Buffy the Vampire Slayer portrayed such strong female characters. More generally, as women received stronger lead roles in Hollywood movies and TV shows, there was a greater opportunity to slash them together (Isaksson 3). Interestingly like slash fiction, the general authorship of femslash is also women. While we now know what slash and femslash fiction is, and that it is primarily written by women, the question still remains why? More importantly, why is there a stigma surrounding male authorship of slash and femslash fiction?
Tumblr media
 Who can Write Slash/Femslash Fiction?
Want the short answer? Anyone. But for some reason, there remains such an impermeable stigma around men who write slash/femslash fiction. But why? Sexuality and gender is non-binary; it is fluid, individual and intrinsically apart of our identities. For example, Alfred Kinsey understands sexuality on a spectrum and that the majority of humans are neither exclusively homosexual nor exclusively heterosexual. Instead, the majority of us are somewhere in between (Weinrich, 1). We work so hard to avoid boxes and labels—the options are no longer dichotomous. It is no longer just male or female, it is no longer just straight or gay. So, why does it matter who is creating a piece and whom is reading it? There shouldn’t really be stigma surrounding this. It is just fans taking part in fandoms in their own way. That’s why we are challenging this stigma, by writing a fan fiction that contains both slash and femslash fiction! Take a read:

The following fan fiction was written and created by us. We then edited our piece to include femslash as well.

Note: This Femslash takes place one year following the events of Jurassic World            Lightening struck again waking Claire from a horrible nightmare. The constant routine of waking abruptly with flashes of dinosaurs ripping apart human flesh had become so familiar to her. She immediately rolled over in her bed expecting to beside the love of her life.
             She was alone.
Thinking back, she could not remember a time where she slept through the night without waking up in a panic. She got out of bed and walked down the hallway, giving up any hope of more sleep.  For some reason tonight her house felt more empty than usual. Everything was silent and lonely. Her constant need to clean and keep a perfect looking home made it seem lonelier. She had trapped herself in isolation when she moved away from everyone she knew. She found a house in Fairbanks, Alaska. This winter was especially cold.
She hadn’t seen Owen since the events took place. She feared that he would be upset with her for leaving without telling anyone. However, she could not go on lying to everyone after the horrible incident. More importantly, she regretted never having the chance to tell him about Zara.
Although Owen Always thought they were meant for each other, Claire knew he could never fulfill her need for connection the way that Zara did. Zara was the most beautiful woman Claire had ever seen. When she first began working for her she knew there was chemistry… and not just the kind that made dinosaurs come back to life.
Zara had the type of confidence that captured the room.  It was as if all work in the office halted once she walked in; all eyes slowly wandering down her long legs. When Claire first saw Zara, she knew she had to have her. She was immediately drawn in. Her brown hair was perfect. Everything about her seemed too perfect to be true. It was in these first looks that Claire felt something she never had before; something she never thought she would ever feel with a woman.
Claire put the kettle on and prepared a cup of tea. She then grabbed her housecoat and decided to brave the cold winter night. Immediately she was surprised to see the beautiful Northern Lights illuminating the sky. She sipped her tea looking at splashes of glowing green across the sky. She thought it might be the most amazing thing she had ever seen. Then immediately she began to remember when Zara and her first spoke.
Once their eyes locked, it felt as if the whole world had become weightless. As they discussed their work she noticed she could not stop smiling. Claire and Zara’s eyes kept meeting and she noticed that Zara kept looking at her lips. Once she realized this was happening Claire blushed. She had never felt butterflies this strong with anyone before. However, she was too nervous and embarrassed to make a move.
Claire decided it was too cold and moved back inside to turn on the fireplace. Although she was lonely, her home in Fairbanks gave a sense of independence and sanctuary. She needed a simple life after living through the horrible deaths and fears at Jurassic World. Every article and news story across the world covered the story of the hundreds of injured and killed people in Jurassic World.
She checked her phone and noticed a missed call: Owen. It had been three months since the last time Owen had tried to call her. She began to cry. She never realized how much she missed human contact till this moment. The fire finally began to heat the house and she curled up on the couch. Through the frosted window she noticed the snow begin to fall.
The first time Zara kissed Claire her heart began to beat through her chest. Her arms wrapped around her body and held her close.  She had never been so nervous. “Don’t be nervous” Zara whispered to her.

https://www.sandlerresearch.org/catheter-stabilization-securement-device-market-by-product-arterial-cvs-portal-femoral-chest-epidural-peripheral-nasogastric-endotracheal-foley-application-cardiovascular-respiratory.html
Catheter Stabilization /Securement Device Market by Product ((Arterial, CVS (Portal, Femoral), Chest, Epidural, Peripheral (Nasogastric, Endotracheal, Foley)), Application (Cardiovascular, Respiratory), End User - Global Forecast to 2025
“Catheter securement devices market is projected to grow at CAGR of 10.0% from 2020 to 2025”
The global catheter securement devices market is projected to reach USD 1.90 billion by 2025 from USD 1.18 billion in 2020, at a CAGR of 10.0% from 2020 to 2025. The growth of the market is largely driven by factors such as the growing global prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as heart diseases, strokes diabetes, and the increasing healthcare expenditure across the countries. Developing economies are expected to provide a wide range of growth opportunities for players in the market.
Covid -19 Impact On The Catheter Securement Devices Market
The outbreak of COVID-19 has created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact on healthcare industry. Intubation is one of the most important procedures used for managing critical COVID-19 patients. It helps them breathe and supports drug delivery. As a result, the increasing number of COVID-19 patients is going to result in rise in demand for intubation, ventilators, and ventilation stabilization supplies such as the catheter securement devices.
In line with this, Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is being clinically used as an adjunctive drug in the treatment of COVID-19 positive patients. This is further going to increase the demand for catheter securement device which is used to minimize potential complications as a result of catheter movement or dislodgment.
Market Dynamics
Driver:Increasing Prevalence Of Lifestyle Diseases
Lifestyle diseases such as obesity and CVD are on the rise globally. Worldwide, obesity has more than tripled since 1975. Worldwide, obesity has more than tripled since 1975. Globally there are more people who are obese than underweight—this occurs in every region except parts of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Research shows almost a nine-fold increase in CVD in India and China since the last decade. Thus, the rising number of cardiac surgeries is an impetus for the growth of the securement devices market worldwide. Furthermore, the rapidly increasing global geriatric population is also expected to drive market growth in the coming years.
Restraint: Availability Of Alternative Products
In many countries, dressing tapes are used as a cost-effective option for securement devices. Historically, a surgical suture was the only secure technique to retain VADs in place. This practice still occurs today owing to habit and a lack of perceived ‘safe’ alternatives. This can restrain the market growth of catheter securement devices market.
OPPORTUNITY: Growth Potential In Emerging Economies
Emerging economies such as India, Brazil, China, and South Africa provide significant opportunities for players in the catheter securement devices market. The need for improved healthcare services in these economies is mainly driven by the rapidly increasing aging population and high patient volumes. With the advantages that the suture-less devices offer and the increasing minimally invasive surgeries being carried out in the emerging economies, the market presents a huge opportunity.
“Peripheral securement devices segment accounted for a significant share of the catheter securement devices market, by type, in 2019”
By type, the catheter securement devices market is segmented into peripheral catheter securement devices, arterial catheter securement devices, central venous catheter securement devices, chest drainage tube securement devices, abdominal drainage tube securement devices, epidural securement devices, and all-site securement devices. Of all these products types hospitals accounted for the largest share of the catheter securement devices market in 2019. The central venous catheter securement devices is the fastest growing segment due to the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases such as strokes and heart diseases.
“Cardiovascular procedures segment accounted for the largest share of the catheter securement devices market, by application, in 2019”
On the basis of application, the catheter securement devices market is segmented into cardiovascular procedures, respiratory procedures, gastric procedures, general surgery, urological procedures, radiology procedures, and others. Of all these applications segments, cardiovascular procedures segment accounted for the largest share of the catheter securement devices market in 2019.
“Hospitals segment accounted for the largest share of the catheter securement devices market, by end user in 2019”
On the basis of end user, the catheter securement devices market is segmented into hospitals, home care settings, emergency clinics and diagnostic imaging centers. Of all these end-user segments, hospitals accounted for the largest share of the catheter securement devices market in 2019. The large share of this segment can be attributed to factors such as the rapidly growing aging population, the higher surgeries performed in the hospital settings and the increasing reimbursements in the hospital settings.
“North America will continue to dominate the catheter securement devices market during the forecast period”
In 2019, North America was estimated to be the largest regional market for catheter securement devices, followed by Europe. The growth in this market is primarily driven by the rising geriatric population, favorable government initiatives, increasing healthcare expenditure, improved healthcare infrastructure coupled with the rising prevalence of lifestyle diseases.

Tangfastic
Audrey Tang, Taiwanese digital minister, was fizzing with energy and insight when I interviewed her for the IfG this week.
We covered how Taiwan has kept its coronavirus cases astonishingly low (partly through quarantine and 'digital fences'), how it has fought misinformation, its innovative work on digital government and public engagement in general, and the most poetic job description you'll ever encounter.
Watch the whole thing here, and read/watch much more here.
In other news:
On the subject of job descriptions, a good selection of jobs this week. MoJ's Sam Tazzyman - you may remember him from an excellent Data Bites presentation - and the ESRC asked me to highlight theirs, while Full Fact also have an excellent opportunity - you'll find them all at the end of the Meta data section below. And an irregular reminder that if you're looking for data/digital jobs, Jukesie's newsletter is still the best place to look.
On the subject of Data Bites (any excuse), the next one will be at 6pm on Wednesday 1 July, supported by ADR UK. It's a great line up - full details shortly. Catch up on previous ones in the meantime.
Honestly, what is it with the completely unnecessary secrecy? The government is storing up serious problems for itself when it comes to earning trust in how it's using our data.
It was a bright cool day in June, and Nineteen Eighty-Four was celebrating 71 years since it was first published.
There are some good #BlackLivesMatter-related links from FiveThirtyEight below. But you should read this first.
See you next week
