I just got done my ceramics class. And I have such a nice time. I used almost all of my clay. Literally had like three little teeny tiny pieces the size of a quarter left. I gave them to Sandy because she had a reclaim bag right there and I just feel really nice right now. I am very excited to go home though because I'm so tired.
I didn't sleep well again last night but it's really just because I can't breathe. I wake up in the morning and I can't breathe out of my nose and I just feel so tired. I don't know what I can do to make myself breathe better at night. I'm either too hot or it's too dry. Ridiculous.
So because of that I let myself sleep an extra hour. And I did benefit from that greatly. Wednesdays are great because I can do that. And I just tried to not cry. James left a little bit before I got up for real. They had laid it with me for a little while but honestly I was just not in a good spot and I was just really frustrated.
But they left and I pulled myself together. I got dressed and I felt pretty good. My hair is very dirty and my head is itchy but it looked nice. And I just pulled myself together and I left and I went to work.
I was still thinking about the house a lot. And I I'm still thinking about it now. But I tried to put it out of my head and think about other stuff because focusing on and isn't going to help me much.
So I got to camp and I got to work on fixing some of the things on the schedule. Cuz that is just going to be a project I'm going to continuously tinker with for the next 3 months. I worked on starting to write down the lessons and ideas I have for the new programs that we're trying to develop. It was a good time.
But very quickly I became very bored. They're just wasn't enough for me to do today. But it was also way too cold outside to do anything. On my drive in it started to flurry which was so nice and it was so pretty. But I left my gloves at home and so being outside was too painful. Thankfully I have an extra sweatshirt in the car so I was able to layer later in the day when it got doing colder. But I did not want to be out in the world doing much. I wanted to stay in the office where it was at least warm.
I was very distracted this morning though I was just thinking about the house and I was working on lesson plans and I was playing on my phone and eventually I walked up to the art building and I did put some stuff away and I spray painted a pallet easel box I have that someone had poorly painted. So I would go up there twice to do a couple coats. And then I put away all the stuff that we got from the attic. But then my hands hurt really bad so I went back to the office.
I was so bored that I just was eating all day. Just trying to keep myself awake. I had my lunch early and I just tried to have a nice day because it was very difficult when I was so bored.
Eventually I would go up to arts and crafts and get some of my beating stuff and brought that down to work on just to have something to do.. periodically Heather would have something for me to change your ad on the schedule so I kept fussing with that and working on my lesson plans. And eventually we got an email from Harold about the house.
Apparently the current owner, seller, got a home inspection done in September. I guess in preparation for putting a house in the market. And there are issues. A lot of issues. It's hard though because there are two codes essentially there's orange and there is red. And the orange ones are kind of all over the place. Like some are stuff that is concerning to me and stuff that I'm just like oh well like that's fine. Like for instance some of the orange ones are about the length of the handrails. And then others are about the gutters touching electrical wires. And this has issues. It will need work if we get this one. Some of it bigger than others. But honestly I don't know if it dissuades me from this particular house. I'm going to kind of lean on our realtor on this one and kind of take his advice at this point because any home inspection we get is going to have these problems because we're looking at houses that are old. But even the house is that are old but flipped are not flipped well so they're also going to have issues. So it's really hard to know how much money it's going to take to fix any of these places. And like yesterday I watched a TikTok about someone who just bought a brand new house and it's leaking all over the place and it's just got water coming from every pipe essentially and they've had to replace the entire flooring and so many things have gone wrong. And honestly I think that's probably going to be the case in any place we end up. They're all going to have the potential for catastrophe. And you got to hope that it's not going to happen and be proactive and I think that's one of the things that's nice about the home inspection because now at least we know and we can start attacking those problems. I just need to believe in myself that I wouldn't take on something that I don't think I can handle either by fixing it myself or financially.
But honestly getting that home inspection just made me more stressed because now I don't know what the right answer is. There's so many things I like about this house but I still think I want to see the couple more. I am more secure in what my overall budget is though and what I'm comfortable with taking out lone wise. I don't want to be stupid about it but it is not a buyer's market and I am also being realistic about that. It's really hard to know what the right call is in the end
I just focused on my beating though and tried to finish out the day. Chris would come up from his house to have a meeting with Alexi and me him and Heather talked a little bit. I told him he's going to be leaving a program and he was like haha and I'm like apparently you were supposed to do it beforehand so I'm going to make you do it this year and I think it will be good for everybody. I hope that I can actually make that happen. And I chatted with Heather after he went into his meeting and we talked about enthusiasm and getting people on board with stuff and the things that we hope to do and it was really nice.
Me and Heather were also laughing because earlier in the day I had found someone had posted two of our badges / awards on eBay for like 40 and $50 a piece. that is hilarious. Which one of our people are doing that because that is so funny. What I think happened is something we donated had a patch on it and it ended up in somebody's hands that thought it was worth something and was vintage and put it online. But these things are modern and it was really funny to see.
But it was time for me to go. And annoyingly I wasn't really hungry anymore but I knew that I should eat something where I was not going to make it through my class. I said goodbye to everyone and decided to drive out to cockeysville to go get Taco Bell. But you didn't really make my stomach feel amazing. I accidentally got two different potato products. But it was okay. I ate my car and watched a video and then I went to my class.
And it was a really nice class. We only have one more after this and I'm really glad I took this class but I still don't think I really like throwing on a wheel and if I did a ceramics again I would just want to be a handworking class. They do have other types of classes at the millville and so I'm going to look into those because I think I would still enjoy taking something. Periodically but weekly I think might be a little bit much for me right now. I'm just a little stretched thin.
I started the class by finishing waxing the bottoms of all of my fire pieces to get ready to be dipped. I chose a couple colors I haven't done before and when I have. I am really excited to see how they come out and I really hope they come out well. And then I trimmed the pieces I made last week. I decided I really liked the rough texture so I left a lot of that natural roughness to them and I think that they will come out very interestingly in the end. And then it was time to start working on my Christmas ornaments!
I really like to doing the Christmas ornaments with cookie cutters. I thought I would enjoy the temporary tattoo underglazes more but it just didn't do anything for me. Like I made a couple that I think will be nice gifts but I really enjoyed making the cookie ones and then I wanted to paint them like actual cookies. My favorite ones I made look like the Little Debbie's Christmas tree cakes. And I'm really hoping they come out nice because I just think that they were a really good idea and I am very excited about them.
I still had some clay left so I rolled that out and I cut a whole bunch more cookies and I did drop a wooden tray on the ground of some of them and squished them so I had to start those again. But it was fine. I talked to Lindsey about finishing them next week since I'm going to have stuff to glaze but that's not going to take very long and I want to have something to work on so I have a few pieces that I'm going to let continue to dry in the next week I'll under glaze them and then she said even though the class is over we can come back and do clear dip places on all of our pieces if we need to. Very very nice of her.
I didn't have much clean up because I never turned the wheel on and so I was able to pick up pretty quickly and now I'm on my way home. It's very cold outside and I kept my clay covered sweatshirt on under my jacket. But I'll be home soon and I'm going to wash my hair and try to sleep better tonight. Fingers crossed. Tomorrow me and Sarah are hoping to go up to the art building to do some crafts but we'll see what happens. It's so cold up there I can't really see us being very comfortable doing that but we will see. I just hope it's a good day. And I hope that we get to see some houses tomorrow. Maybe it'll give me a little bit more clarity.
I hope that you all sleep well tonight. Be safe out there. Until next time. Wash your hands.

─🏀─ Slam Dunk : sakuragi hanamichi celebrating haruko's birthday
⸝⸝ summary : title says all, a little fanfic about sakuragi giving haruko a homemade (and delicious) birthday present !
⸝⸝ note : t'was my own birthday a week ago ! turned one year older and now my bones are crumbling to dust as we speak /j also, first-ever time writing for him, so i might edit this as time goes on !
Tumblr media
poor thing doesn't know what to give haruko at first. he'll try to ask his friends for ideas but to be honest they weren't much help (god forbid hanamichi gifts her cheap jewelry or plain clothing or a dollhouse-). so after the usual distribution of headbutts for such bad suggestions, mito had the brilliant idea to make hanamichi gift her a home-cooked bento.
and of course, hanamichi took that idea as his own and dragged the others into the nearest market for fresh ingredients. they pooled all the money they could find in their pockets and threatened bargained the store owners into letting them buy it for cheap and walked out with a bag full of vegetables and meat.
at home, the five friends got to work, teaching hanamichi how to make the perfect bento - they instructed hanamichi how to boil an egg without burning the stove; they taught hanamichi how to fry sausages without turning his fingers into soot; they helped hanamichi cook the rice without busting the electric cooker.
"the genius doesn't need anyone teaching him how to cook !" - hanamichi, as his pan starts smoking and flames start appearing.
when the practice-bento was finished, everyone crowded around it for the taste test. admittedly, the potatoes were undercooked and the meat still a bit hard to chew, but for hanamichi's first time cooking a full meal, it was a damn good first try.
look, you can't look at me in the eye and tell me hanamichi doesn't live on cupped ramen and packed food from the local convenience store -
tomorrow arrives - haruko’s birthday.
hanamichi is up before the sun even rose, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he watches over the boiling eggs and the rice bubbling on the cooker.
twice he forgot his friends' instructions and panicked (was it two teaspoons of soy sauce or three?), but he still managed to get it cooked and arranged in a neat little bento box.
steaming, shiny rice goes in one corner, sausages and meatballs go into another; boiled potatoes and eggs cluster together in a little square of warmth and homemade sweet-and-sour sauce sits delicately in its own little place.
so he goes off to school, haruko’s bento box wrapped in a thick, red-gingham patterned cloth.
everything that day seems to pass by in a whirlwind - one moment he and the sakuragi squad was laughing and joking on the train, the next the bell was already ringing for the school lunch.
he was out of his seat before anybody else could exit, and found haruko walking out of her own classroom, laughing with matsui and fijii and then smiling as she spots him.
"hi, hanamichi !" she says, and hanamichi's heart melts into a gooey puddle on the floor. "is that your lunch?" she asks, nodding to the bento box he was holding.
"u-uh, no," he says gruffly, and he bows to her with the bento box outstretched in his hands. "it's for you, happy birthday haruko." even when bowing she can see the intense red blush spreading across his cheeks.
haruko beams, and she takes the bento, admiring the warmth it emitted. hanamichi straightens up. "did you cook this yourself?" she asks, a smile playing around her lips. hanamichi nods.
she beams even wider, her smile as bright as the sun, warm enough to melt even the coldest of hearts. "thank you," she says, and she stands on her tiptoes and gives hanamichi a soft peck on the cheek.
streamers and confetti and the loud, celebratory noise of a party popper erupts from the end of the corridor ; matsui and fijii’s jaws dropped.
hanamichi is shocked. he touches the spot where haruko’s lips met his cheek and opens his mouth to say something, but before he could, the sakuragi squad jumps up from behind him, laughing and patting him on the back.
"congratulations, hanamichi !" "so our all-nighter didn't go to waste !" "hey hey, haruko, didn't you know he almost burned the kitchen last night-"
"SHUT UP !" hanamichi manages to shout, and he gives his four friends a strong headbutt. haruko laughs ; she always did love their weird little antics.
"d-do you like it?" hanamichi asks, his demeanor so different from how he was acting just a second earlier. haruko shrugs. "not sure, want to eat lunch with me and know how it tastes?"
sakuragi squad jumps straight up, shouting at hanamichi to go with her amidst laughter. matsui and fijii gasps out loud and giggles.
"alright, then," he says, blushing intensely as she slips her arm around his. he looks back at his friends as the two of them walk, and sends a dashing grin and a thumbs up.

Orch: people are based around a technology (or tech based job) and a flower/plant. Or just a plant, because I can't think of that many techs or tech themed jobs. For vibes, maybe Solarpunk lofi 80s? Like, yah, there's VHS tapes and skate boards and classic 80s cartoons, but there's also plants everywhere, instead of branded cereal box commercials and all that junk food, it's commercials for different farmers markets, claims of having the brightest and tastiest fruit, thick and overgrown woods with walking paths made by generations of people walking to the same areas to hang out.
Grape Vine + radio host
? + photographer - Orch mother adopts Alex
How much did Alex figure out about their powers before Karl showed up? What are their powers? Does their blood burn to the touch? Are they fire proof? What do the other Orch residents think?
Instead of a single mother figure, what if they're adopted by a group of people? Like a bunch of construction workers and engineers? Or a group of teenagers that hang out in the woods? Or something like that? I personally like the idea of the construction workers because since Orch is a blend of technology and plants, they'd double as florists.
Alex: hey, I'm hungry. When's lunch?
Worker: Ah, in a bit. Should be hitting a good stopping point in about an hour.
Alex: okay.
Alex, ten minutes later: I found a snack.
Worker, turning around: You didn't steal that from anyone's lunch did... you?
Alex, chewing on hot coals with glowing red eyes: No, I got it from the fire pit.
Just, picturing this construction company of guys of varying ages all adopting this weird... girl? Person? That came out of some really weird fog that overtook one of their construction sites and made terrifying noises. They would also be the ones to eventually realize that something is changing as Azure moves in slowly and starts messing with stuff.
What if their eyes are really vibrant under electrical lights but super dull under sunlight? Like Prowa but only for their eyes? And when she's using fire powers they always glow bright red?
Just Alex traveling across dimensions and regularly visiting her hord of uncles.
Also, what were they wearing when they first arrived? It would feel weird to have them not wearing any clothes. I think a weird mismatch of all three clothes and styles would be fun. I can't really research to get a good image but my idea is: dress slacks (Cue), a commoners cotton? Shirt (Saponite), a leather overcoat stained in a multitude of colors (Karl). Then the accessories! Maybe like, a single glove (Cue), one shoe is a sneaker (Karl) and the other is an armored boot (Saponite), chunky goggles with one red lense and one blue lens, maybe a hat with a feather, could be like a newsies cap or a baseball cap, or even a leather satchel (could have nothing in it, could have something in that).
Imagine seeing someone wearing that outfit walk out of this weird blue fog and start making eltrich noises at you. Then you and all your buddies adopt them. Crazy.
Also, have we decided on a hair color for Alex? Or a general appearance? I think we said they could swap between the different powers but like, do they have horns at first? Do they grow in? Do they have wings at first? Do the wings grow in? Are the horns or wings summoned? I thought we had a good grasp on Alex and now I'm realizing we really don't? Or at least we haven't talked about them in a long time.
Yah, sorry if this is a lot of things to throw at you at once but this was all written as a sort of stream of consciousness and trying to divide it up made it all confusing.
Long stuff here
1. How sold are you on the 80s aesthetic for Orch? I remember Orch’s Vibes is like on the verge of an Industrial Revolution, a bit more old timey and like a Western but in a forest if I remember correctly? Steampunk in the way it’s Victorian/old timey but full of advanced machinery. Small town feels.
Actually, we could easily keep both. I like that idea. Makes sense for Orch to be Rural anyhow. I really like the thicket you make.
2. If they become characters can we name the grape radio host Venny? Ideas for the photographer: a bonsai tree?
3. [1/2] Depends, how old do we think Alex is? I’d like for her to be on the younger side, maybe 6-8 ish? I think it’s more weird things happen around her at first.
Things to consider:
• Her Karl adjacent powers would probably relate a lot more to the Azure Lens than the Between.
• She probably has her others powers depending on what form she’s in.
• What are the residents of Orch like biologically? Her forms would depend on this. I don’t think she should stand out too much. (Maybe she can shift—at will or on accident—but keeps to the woods when she does and becomes or feeds into a local cryptid/ghost-like story.)
3. [2/2] I think everyone definitely knows she’s weird. Just like that odd little girl who comes around my store or hangs out near my garage or is in the library.
The people who are close to her understand she’s magical in some way (especially since Orch is a more solid dimension) but have no idea what to do about it and since they’ve come to love her they just to that and treat her like the sweet little kid she is—weird cryptic stuff aside.
Actually, the 80s era aesthetic gives me an idea. Are you aware of the kids on bikes troupe? It’s A sort of ET/Stranger things/Goonies/most 80s neighborhood sci fi troupe where a bunch of kids/teens go out and discover [adventure].
4. LOVE the idea of a demi beyond-god being raised by a confused but well-meaning village (most of whom think she’s just a bit strange, explainable from the fact she appears to be a homeless orphan just wandering around on her own. The construction workers taking care of her when they can (unable to actually do anything at first since they don’t actually KNOW anything about her and taking her against her will would be kidnapping. eventually group adopting her.
5. AHHHH EVEN BETTER. Troupe of raising the antichrist into a good person just by being good people ks my favorite!!!! She’s not an antichrist figure obviously but she is an extremely powerful and easily destructive demi beyondgod. Just doing Weird slightly evil looking things.
6. She’s probably really smart when it comes to contraptions. She’ll catch on fast and point out ideas in the construction/engineer’s people’s work as she hangs out with them. In that way kids are just randomly brilliantly.
7. YEAH LIKE FROM PROWA AND KARL COMBINED! Glowing from Saph, pale colors from Cue, and vibrance/shiny from Karl, and the blue colors/electric flavor of her powers from the Azure.
8. I love this hodgepodge child!! And I forgot about her languages being strange at first.
9. I don’t think we’ve come up with anything specific. I’ve been imagining her as having semi-curly black hair that glows bright turquoise in certain light? Cue and Saphonite both have black hair (oo maybe Saph has ember like patterns down it?)
Maybe she has strands of hair that will kind of change color subtly like Karl’s.

When going down the locks, as they empty, water trapped in the cracked lock walls pours out. We needed to be careful we didn’t get wet.
Tumblr media
Some of the locks leaked a lot!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After saying goodbye to Emanuel we went on to the next lock and waited for the lunch break to end. Only 2 more locks before Betton. So only 7 today. After lunch, the other side of the locks, we saw this.
Tumblr media
He’ll struggle to get under the bridges like that! Why would you need sails on a canal barge anyway? There’s no room to tack.🤔
At Betton there were a couple of spaces, so we picked one, turned round into the wind and moored up.
We were adjacent to a large car park. There were a lot of electric boxes. Hopefully the electric will work. The electric is for the camper vans too. Unfortunately the sockets were all domestic and none for marine. The skipper spent the next 3/4 hour changing his reverse polarity cable into a cable with a domestic plug. It worked!
We heard ‘Bonjour! C’est Patrick de Tinténiac!’ Well, bugger me if it wasn’t Patrick who had now bought his Beneteau Flyer in Quiberon and was on his way to St.Malo. We helped him moor up.
Tumblr media
Well, he ain’t going any further than this without making alterations to his radar arch. Later his son arrived with disc cutter in hand. I think we’ll leave them to it.
Tumblr media
As it had now been a week since we’d had a shower (we have washed, really!) we were desperate for the sanitaires. We saw a block over the other side of the carpark which we assumed was the place to go (we were here 5 years ago but couldn’t remember), but it was a laverie. There was a young lad in there skinning up, but no sign of facilities. There was a massive brand new ‘Marie’ (town hall) just over the road. There they directed us to the facilities by the children’s play area. They were functional but a bit industrial. It didn’t matter, a good strong hot shower!! Yes please!!
On the way to the block we saw this sign. Betton, twinned with Moretonhamstead! Bizarre!!
Tumblr media
Thereafter, food and wine onboard. We’re taking the bus to Rennes tomorrow for the market. We like markets.

Good evening TUMBLR - March 9th - 2024
''Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971."
Ch. XII.7 - Morocco - 1989 - 1991
His Majesty Hassan II visit to New Agadir Airport construction site.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The construction of the new Agadir airport had begun almost a year ago, when it was decided that King Hassan II would visit it to ''lay the first stone''. Meanwhile, it must be said that His Majesty Hassan II was not ''simply the King of Morocco'', but he claimed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him). KIng Hassan II was therefore invested with the office of ''Amir el Mouminin'' (The Leader of the Believers). Morocco's people have been always very critical toward their political class, but they had always maintained high respect for the Sovereign. In essence they considered him above everything and everyone, and sometimes himself a ''victim'' of palace intrigues.
I remember one of our local suppliers, during a lunch to which we were invited, burst into open criticism of the statements of his young children (university students) who contested the excessive power of the King - we were sipping the famous green tea when blurted out: ''I don't understand what you young people want, when I was a child I was dying of hunger, now the food overflows from the walls of the Souk el Had''! (the Sunday market). And that's thanks to our King's dedication and ability!!
KING'S VISIT PREPARATION Preparations for the King's visit to Agadir began a month in advance. Practically the city became a large whitewashing and varnishing site - hoards of painters, whether improvised or otherwise, set to work to refurbish the entire city. Not only the buildings that in theory should have witnessed the passage of the Royal motorcade, but the entire city was newly painted. The aim was to give absolutely no indication of the King's route, coming from Marrakesh, at that time the last Morocco Southern city reached by the railway. From there the King would continue the journey in an open Mercedes limousine to the Royal palace in Agadir.
On the construction site, preparations for the laying of the first stone by King Hassan II, entrusted to the Bouygues company, were frenetic. A large square had been set up, a layer of gravel had been laid, and a stage had been built from which the King would give a short speech. Behind the stage, a special car park equipped with electricity would have housed the mobile clinic that followed the Sovereign everywhere in his movements. At the last moment an entire truckload of carpets would have been spread between the stage and the chairs where the dignitaries would have sat: another paragraph of the protocol said in fact that Hassan II must never put his feet on the bare ground, but always on precious carpets . A week before the scheduled date of the Royal visit, checkpoints were installed at all entrances to the city of Agadir by the National Security Agency. All vehicles to and from Agadir were stopped and inspected, looking for any souspicious items. In reality, no one knew the exact date of the King's arrival, which was also a precaution against possible terrorist attacks. Let's not forget that in the early 1990s the war between Morocco and the Sahrawis who claimed independence from Morocco of the former Spanish Sahara was in full swing. The closer the possible date of the Royal visit got, the more stringent the restrictive measures of the Police and Gendarmerie became. Until the city was completely blocked: no one could enter or leave Agadir! To get to the site I was forced to use my Range Rover and go through the beach. It that day we understood that the King's arrival was imminent: the mobile clinic had arrived at site, and was positioned as planned behind the Royal Box. A long queue of cars with the dignitaries admitted to the ceremony were waiting to enter the airport area. After strenuous checks by the Gendarmerie, these people, all strictly dressed in the long cream-coloured cloak and red fez (as well as the traditional yellow Moroccan slippers) were made to sit in the chairs prepared in front of the stage where King Hassan II would speak. We participants in the project, however, would have waited standing for hours for the arrival of the Sovereign, positioned immediately after the small group admitted to greet the King, once he had come down from the limousine. Only the first 2 to a maximum of 3 dignitaries (therefore considered closest and in the King's good graces) are allowed to actually kiss Hassan II's hand. And at a certain moment, when dignitaries, spectators, us, the security forces had lost hope… here was: the King Hassan Al Thani Nasaraullah made his appearance!! Standing in the open black Mercedes. He was also dressed in the cream jallaba, the hood on his head, much smaller than I thought, his olive-skinned face (inherited from his mother) already elderly, but which exuded solemnity and very strong energy. The limo stopped about thirty meters away from the dignitaries lined up to wait. The smiling King waved a few times, while the military band played the Moroccan anthem. Having got out of the car, King Hassan II walked between two rows of young women in traditional costumes who threw red rose petals into the air as he passed, taking them from the wicker baskets they held in their hands. At the same time, dozens of women made the traditional ''zaghroutah'', that cry between singing and howling, vibrate in the air.
A triumphal entry, no doubt about it, studied down to the smallest detail by the ceremonial staff. Among the applause of the onlookers, the TVs filming the ceremony, the King reviewed the dignitaries as expected, accompanied by the Chief of Staff, in full uniform, and the Chief of Ceremonies, who whispered in his ear the name and position of every dignitary when they were in front of the Sovereign. Than finally it was our turn: the Chief of Ceremonials said something to the King, as he graciously nodded, accompanying it with a smile. At this point, flanked by the Minister of Transport, they turned towards a sort of brick wall, covered with the flag of Morocco - at a nod from the Master of Ceremonies, two valets removed the green silk flag from the wall, revealing a plaque with a sentence written in Arabic (essentially it said ''Here on May 14, 1990 King Hassan II - Emir of the Believers - inaugurated the works for the construction of the new airport in the city of Agadir - may Allah bless us all). Than the King sat down on the stage, and the greeting addresses began, starting from the Governor of the Agadir Region, followed by the Minister of Transport. The King spoke as last: a short speech to say how happy he was to be where, and to have started a project that would surely - with God's help - bring prosperity to the region and to the entire Morocco. Thus ended the visit, and in the midst of a swarm of security agents, the King sat down in the back seat of the Mercedes. In front of the car, the famous motorcyclist policemen, who opened the Royal procession. They then told me that for all 25 kilometers from the airport to Agadir, a cheering crowd with Moroccan flags had greeted the passage of the King. But the Royal visit did not end there. The next day a celebration was scheduled in the city center, during which King Hassan II would give a speech to the citizens in El Amal square, the main Agadir square. Everything was then ready, the Kaimah (the large white tent) where the King would stop as the 3,000 dignitaries admitted to greet him passed by - all rigorously dressed in traditional costume, the crème Jallaba, yellow slippers and red fez.
The ceremony was short and simple: after the flag raising, the King gave a speech in which he extolled the role of the Agadir region as an engine and example for the country's development - the entrepreneurial skills of the region's people in the key sectors of fishing, agriculture and tourism, which brought prosperity to all country.
Finally the Royal visit ended, the King left and Agadir was able to return to the somewhat sleepy life it had before. Yes, because despite the numerous foreign tourists, the city ultimately lived a very peaceful life.

A Storm and a Flood, pt. 1
8 November, 2023
I was writing to our friend in Los Angeles last Thursday afternoon, responding to a message she had sent inquiring about the state of affairs in Tuscany and Italy, in general, given reports of bad weather and flooding. Some of you may recall that this past summer the Emilia Romagna region was hit with unseasonable late spring and summer rain that flooded vast areas of the flat, low lying areas and washed out roads and homes in the more mountainous areas. Francesca had to work around the problems this created for some train lines going southeast from Bologna to the Adriatic coast where she had to work.
In the last few weeks there has been a number of storms that have brought rain on the northern part of Tuscany where Prato sits nestled up against the Calvana hills (calva means bald in Italian, so it signifies that these hills have no trees on top) and close to the Apennine range that runs northwest to southeast across the country. Autumn rain is pretty usual, and as the olive picking season begins in mid to late October, the concern is always for getting the fruit picked before a big storm, or waiting after a storm to allow things to dry. This year we had a couple of short intense storms that brought rain on us, and it so happened that twice during these downpours the power went out for a bit. The first time it took the electric company several hours to restore the service. They had to drive out to the village to open up the old switch box to set things right.
Through my kids I was aware that a large storm was on the way this last weekend, but here in Prato there was little warning or announcement that anything unusual was expected. So we all went about our business as usual. We were lucky that our friend and contractor had sealed the skylight window above the stairs in the Paolo and Giovanna’s house so that the rain wouldn’t drip down inside anymore, and I had cleared the rain gutters on the upper corner where I could reach to make sure there would be as little overflow as possible. Our friend Monica, who I met in Los Angeles almost 35 years ago and now lives in the Val d’Elsa, came to Prato on Thursday morning to drop off her pet bunny rabbit at the kennel in Prato where she always does when she is going off on a trip. I picked her up at the train station and we ran out to the Villa Fiorita area near Figline on the other side of the Bisenzio from Villa Rucellai, dropped off Bambi the bunny, and then we had lunch in the big kitchen.
It was a gray day, and it was drizzling in the morning, but it was not particularly cold. As we finished our coffee after lunch Monica suggested we go for a walk, but we found that the rain was getting stronger, and while it wasn’t enough to keep us from a quick turn among the olive trees, the wet weather from the previous week had made the ground a bit muddy, so we didn’t go. I took Monica back to the train station and she caught her ride back to Firenze Rifredi where she would change for a train for Empoli and home to Castelfiorentino. It was already a sign of things to come (although not totally clear because trains around here can often run late due to work along the rails) that at 2:30, Monica caught the train that had been expected at 2:00. The train she expected to catch at 2:45 was going to be 50 minutes late. My wife was expected to arrive at 9:00 that evening coming from Lugano by way of Milan, so I sent her a message to let her know that many of the trains were delayed and to be ready for a long journey. As I drove back to Canneto, I went to the market to get milk and bread for the weekend, and the rain began to fall more steadily. Since the clocks had fallen back only recently, I was still getting to how dark it got seemingly so early in the day. The day before was the feast of All Saints, and I had been outside at the cemetery of Canneto with my wife’s cousin and my brother in law. By 5:30 things were pretty dark outside and the street lights had been on for 20 minutes or so. Only after the sun went down did we begin to feel a faint bit of cold, and it was more due to the wetness of everything than the air temperature. So I was very happy to be inside the house as the rain began to fall more steadily. My wife sent me a text to let me know that she would really love to have a salad fresh from the garden when she arrived, but I told her that it was raining and I was reluctant to go out. In fact, at that moment it was suddenly really coming down, a downpour similar to what we had had a week before, and looking out the window it appeared like a fog. Then the power went out.
It is important to note that the frantoio (the olive oil mill) was hard at work making olive oil. As different people’s loads of olive paste enter the large separator centrifuge, the machine is paused and when it begins to spin again, you can feel the vibration through the building and the lights in the big kitchen will make a reflexive dimming as an electric load goes toward the work. When the frantoio is working there is a constant hum from the machinery that you can feel and hear, and when the power goes off, there is sudden silence. The white noise drops out and all the other sound comes up.
After I lit a few candles, I noticed in the twilight outside that the rain had slowed and almost stopped. The downpour was slowing, but the accumulated water was flowing across the piazzale like a river flowing. The urge came decisively that it was the only moment to go to the garden to get some salad for my wife. The lull in the storm was only going to last so long.

July 27: This morning after checking on the cows, we needed to sort some sheep. We had to wean some lambs from the ewes, which is done by sending a line of sheep through a sorting chute and moving a metal gate to send the ewes in one direction and the lambs in another. Sometimes they will jump, or two will try to go through at once, so you have to be ready to move your body to pin them against the gate so they don't go the wrong direction. If you mess up, it's nearly impossible to catch the one you missed without starting over again, so it's important to stay focused and make as few mistakes as possible. Once the ewes were separated, we checked their teeth to see if any needed to be marked for market. Then Brian and I went to pick some mushrooms in one of the fields. After lunch, Brian, Tom, Phil and I used the quad bike to put up an electric fence to keep sheep out of the field where Brian's daughter is getting married next weekend. And to end the day, I got to sit in on a meeting they had with someone from the National Trust to discuss a project that involves a report on the status of the wildlife on the Longmynd. It was a productive discussion and interesting to see the ways they need to work together to keep the hills in good condition. For those of you who have been following on instagram, I'm also happy to say that I have finished separating and organizing the tangled mess of blue rope. See the before and after — satisfaction score 9/10. Loses one point due to some kinks that wouldn't come out, but it's still so much better!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
July 28: A few weeks ago, I saw a box of amazing old documents relating to the Longmynd Commoners Association, and the administrator in me desperately wanted to organize it. I didn't say anything at the time, but waited until the box emerged again and asked them if they had any interest in the documents being digitized. They thought it was a good idea, so I was legitimately THRILLED to spend today creating a google drive and scanning every single document and map. There was a lot to get through and this is one of my last days on this farm, so it definitely ranks in the most productive scanning days of my career, haha. I think I probably scanned and labeled a good 750+ pages in one afternoon.
Tumblr media
July 29: Today was my last day on the farm. Tom and I went to Ben and Richard's farm to sheer one last group of sheep, and it was a nice quiet morning with just the four of us. I say it was quiet...my job (wrapping wool) was quiet — the shearers always have a tough job and would probably not describe it that way! When we were done there, we went back to the farm for lunch with the rest of the family and I gave them some small gifts from Minnesota. I managed to hold it together while we finished lunch, but I was really sad to leave — had a pretty tough drive back home 💔 Cathy and Adrian took me out for pizza and a movie to take my mind off things which was a good call...we saw Indiana Jones, which was a bizarre movie 😆 but it was good to get out of the house. New farm next week...
