Some interesting bits from Nico's interview on the All-In Podcast, talking about what traits indicate potential to be a good F1 driver:
I think there are a couple of things that would satisfy that, and one is your speed of processing. Because in a racecar, you're going at 220 mile an hour, and you have so many inputs flying at you. And not only visual, also sensual, yeah, everything, and also sound with the engine and everything. And you have to process that so rapidly. How did you train for that? I even had a computer program, which I developed just for myself actually, where I would have all these different inputs: so audio, touch, tactile—I had like a thing around here—and even then visual on the computer. And I would be catching these inputs, like trying to break my record, and the faster I would go, the faster the program would go. So I was trying to develop these kind of things to train my brain to move faster and react quicker. So reaction time is the key skillset of a driver? It's one of the ones. Is there also also being courageous and like something with your amygdala, where you don't have fear? There's that, certainly, yeah. Although I would say that I am actually someone who is quite fearful. Um, and but when you're in it you kind of get used to things, and you start to feel quite safe in the car nowadays. Because I'm not a crazy adrenaline junkie, unlike most other drivers actually out there. Like someone like— Are they? You find that they are adrenaline junkies? Yeah. Like, someone like Verstappen is fearless. Like completely. Or even Hamilton. They're proper...quite nutcases.

At his insistence, Faith tries to figure out what she’s truly passionate about and eventually seeks the professional help she needs. Fic Masterpost.

The hours Data and Faith were separated were filled with endless calculations and theories on how to reach her. 
Data did not know how he would orchestrate his and Faith's escape. He had yet to gather sufficient information on the vessel which they traveled. Fajo was careful with his words and actions, not revealing or doing too much to give Data an opening to rebel.
When he saw Fajo attack Faith, he had attempted to break the door down without success. Right then and there, he vowed to do whatever he needed to get them home. He only hoped Faith would be more cautious with her own personal safety.
As such, he played along with Fajo's wishes. He wore the clothes, he sat in the chair, and currently, he entertained his guests.
Faith sat by his side, body stiff with tension. Data felt more comfortable having her by his side rather than locked away. He also now knew the location of her room which was not far from his. 
He only agreed to the dinner on the stipulation that he be allowed to see Faith first. Fajo begrudgingly agreed and Data suspected it was because Faith was being so difficult.
The dress Fajo made her wear was obscene. Though Data did feel it accentuated her body in an aesthetically pleasing way. Faith clearly did not feel the same way. She shifted in her seat, reaching up to subtly adjust the front of the dress to hide as much of her breasts as she could.
He reached over to lay a comforting hand on hers. Faith gave him a soft smile before squeezing his hand back.
Fajo was in the process of telling his friends all about his time in prison and subsequent release. Kornok and Dulcer listened excitedly. Enil kept his eyes on Faith, much to Data's dismay.
There was something in his expression that he did not trust. He could tell Enil made Faith uncomfortable by the way she avoided eye contact with him. Not to mention his question about their intimacy was inappropriate.
Eventually, talk turned back to Data himself.
“Tell us about yourself, android,” Kornok said, leaning his elbows on the table. 
“I created by Dr. Noonian Soong and was built with an ultimate storage capacity of eight hundred quadrillion Bits and a total linear computational speed rated at sixty trillion operations per second. However—"
“Bah, none of that technical stuff,” Kornock interrupted. “I mean tell me about you.”
“Well, I am a Starfleet officer who has achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. I am Second Officer of the Enterprise and have received numerous accolades.”
“Is that all you do? Work?” Dulcer asked.
“No,” Data answered. “I also paint and play the violin and guitar. I often enjoy reading and various other recreational activities.”
“Fascinating!” Kornok exclaimed. “If it weren't for his skin and eyes he could pass as human.”
“The detail is fantastic, isn't it?” Fajo beamed proudly. 
As they continued their back and forth, two of the Oz'ods came from the kitchen pushing trays of food. Faith leaned over to quietly whisper, "The one on the left is Soshi. They bring me meals."
"Mala is the other," Data responded, equally quiet. "They are Fajo's personal aid."
"Slave is more like it."
"What are you two whispering about?" Fajo asked, drawing everyone's attention to Data and Faith.
"Data was complimenting my dress," Faith lied smoothly.
Data doubted Fajo believed her but his guests found it entertaining.
"How sweet," Kornok said. "Tell me, android, is romance built into your programming?"
"Many aspects of human life were not initially included in my program," Data explained. "However, I can create programs as I see fit. For example, I have spent a significant amount of time building a romance program, as well as a subprogram specifically for Faith."
"He can adapt, how delightful!" Dulcer exclaimed. She turned her attention to Faith. "You must feel very special to have a mate who can perfectly match your desires and expectations."
"I do," she said, though her smile did not convince Data. He was not sure why but Faith seemed uncomfortable with Dulcer's statement. 
It intrigued him. They had not discussed the logistics of their relationship and Data theorized that may be a contributing factor. 
"Mr. Data does seem particularly attached to Faith considering his lack of emotions," Fajo said with a hint of annoyance in his voice. "Though I doubt he'd really truly miss her if she were gone."
There was an underlying threat with his words. Faith's hand gripped Data's tightly. The Oz'ods served the guests. Data's eyes remained on Fajo.
"That is incorrect," he stated. "As I establish friendships, my positronic brain develops connections to thoughts of those individuals. If that person were to leave, I will experience a sense of loss. In essence, I will miss them."
"Fascinating," Enil muttered, unmoving even when food is placed in front of him. "So your mate is not a simple plaything? An outlet for your curiosity?"
"No, she is not."
Data did not appreciate Enil's insinuation, nor the way he constantly eyed Faith. 
"Enil, stop being rude," Kornok scolded his companion. "I must apologize for my fellow delegate. He has an affinity for human females."
"Personally, I don't see the appeal," Fajo said flippantly as he ate his dinner. "But if Data must have her around, I am happy to oblige."
Data glanced at Faith, noting the darkening of her cheeks and the way she became entirely too invested in her food. Their dismissal of her was misogynistic and insulting to her accomplishments.
"Faith is a decorated Starfleet officer," he said. "She recently made Lieutenant and is Engineering's second-in-command. Her intelligence is vastly superior to her peers and she has a keenly trained eye for details. She has a lot to offer as a mate and a friend."
"Was a decorated Starfleet officer," Fajo corrected. "She and Mr. Data live with me now."
"That does not change her accomplishments."
"It seems the android does not enjoy your insults," Dulcer said to the men. "And he is not the only one. Let us discuss something other than the woman."
Faith relaxed her grip on his hand. While she gave him an appreciative smile, he could tell the conversation had affected her greatly.
Unfortunately, dinner stretched on for hours. Course after course was brought out. Faith ate very little, though Data knew she was likely hungry. Soshi seemed to notice as well and tried to provide her with larger portions. It did not help.
Throughout the evening Data answered any and all questions the delegates posed to him. Very little was asked of Faith but he suspected she was grateful. Even he found their questions tedious to a point.
Eventually, the food was removed and by then the novelty of Data and Faith seemed to wear off the guests. Talk turned to matters of business, which Data found intriguing. Any business Fajo was involved in could only be illegal and dangerous.
Unfortunately, once the subject changed, Fajo waved his hand at the couple. "You may be excused," he said. "Mala, escort them to their quarters."
Data suspected Fajo did not wish for Faith and Data to overhear what he and the delegates were really meeting to discuss. 
Mala bowed and waited patiently for Data and Faith to stand and follow. 
“It was a pleasure to meet you,” Data said with a dutiful bow. “If you'll excuse us…”
“Nice to meet you too,” Kornok said with a wave. “Really, the manners, the movements...stunning!
“Very well done,” Dulcer agreed.
Enil sneered. “Very.”
Data kept his hand on Faith's lower back, making eye contact with Enil as they left. The man still watched Faith like a hawk.
As soon as they were out of earshot, Faith let out a noise of frustration. "Stars that was insulting! Who the hell do they think they are?!" She was shaking with anger, her hands balled into fists. 
"I will admit their comments were inappropriate and out of line."
"Thank you for sticking up for me," Faith said. "I knew I had to ignore them but I'm grateful you didn't."
"I cannot. It is in my programming, remember?"
Faith smiled and wrapped her arm around his, hugging it tightly. "Yeah, I remember."
They reached her quarters first and Data turned to Mala. "May we have a few minutes alone before I must be escorted to my room?"
The Oz'od seemed hesitant. "Mr. Fajo no like Mala delay."
"You have my word it will not take long," Data assured them. "I would like to say a proper goodnight and do not know when we will see each other next."
Mala conceded with a nod, opening Faith's door for them. "No take long."
Once they were alone, Faith threw herself at him, yanking him down into a fiery kiss. Data matched her energy or at least tried to, wrapping his arms around her. The dress was soft but he found himself longing to touch her skin instead. 
She drew away with a shaky breath. "I hate the idea of being separated again."
"I do not find it satisfactory either," Data agreed. His hand suddenly slid over something hard tucked into the back of her dress. "What is this?"
Sheepishly, Faith reached into her dress, pulling out a dinner knife. "I swiped this when no one was looking," she admitted. "I don't have a phaser so I needed some kind of weapon.”
Data was surprised and impressed. Even with his keen eyes, he hadn't noticed her theft.
"That was very risky. If Fajo had caught you, it would not have gone well."
"I know but I had to try. You have your strength and mind to protect you. I don't have anything."
Data studied her carefully, noticing the fear in her eyes. "I understand. I only ask that you be careful."
"I will. Trust me, I'm not going to attack him. But having something with me helps the anxiety."
She left his arms to slide the knife under her pillow. After, she sighed heavily and sat on the bed. Data joined her, putting his arm around her shoulders.
“Would you like to know what I have learned so far?” he asked.
“Yes, please.”
“I believe we are on the ship that attacked the Enterprise. It is constructed from the same materials. That will work to our advantage as Starfleet has already been made aware of its existence. There will be people looking for the ship. The doors can only be operated by Fajo and the Oz’ods.”
“Also Fajo has a phaser that hurts like a bitch.”
Data reached out to touch her injured hip. “Are you in pain?”
“A little. These damn shoes didn't help.” She kicked out of her heels. “God I hate this dress.” She looked around and spotted a pair of pants and a shirt folded neatly at the edge of the bed. They must have been delivered while they were at dinner.
Data watched her stand, wiggling out of the purple dress to slip on more comfortable clothes. Considering her anxiety, he was surprised she had no apparent qualms about undressing in front of him. 
Once she was dressed, she slid onto his lap. She looped her arms around his neck and hugged him. 
Data held her close. “We will escape this place.”
“I think the Oz’ods might be our best bet with that.”
“How so?”
“Soshi all but told me they're prisoners. They're only helping Fajo for protection. They don't think they can survive without him. But if we make them see that they can, maybe they can help us.”
“That is a solid foundation to build upon,” Data said. “I will try to speak to Mala. As of yet, they have been reluctant to answer questions but with this information, I will adjust my approach.”
He suddenly remembered her reaction to Dulcer’s comment at dinner. “Faith, why did you react negatively when Dulcer mentioned my programming adjusting to your needs?”
It took her a moment to recall what he was referring to. “Oh, that. I don't know, I just didn't like the way she said it. There was insinuation there that didn't sit right with me.”
“To what insinuation are you referring?”
“To me, it almost felt like she was saying I was lucky to have someone cater to my desires and expectations. Almost as if I don't have to put any work into our relationship. I don't know. Maybe I was reading too much into it.”
“And that thought insulted you?”
“Yes, of course it did. When you're with someone, both partners should be willing to adapt to each other. It's not fair if only one person has to change to fit the other's needs.”
This made Data curious. “Are there aspects of my personality that you need to adjust to?” 
Faith seemed to hesitate before answering. “Yes,” she eventually said. “But not in a negative way by any means. I just have to remember that there's a learning curve between us and that you're still learning about human interaction in general.”
“If I have done anything to make you frustrated or upset, I do apologize.”
Faith leaned in and kissed him. It was gentle and meant to comfort. “You have nothing to apologize for,” she said, nuzzling his cheek. “You've done nothing wrong, okay?”
Her expression was earnest and sincere. Data nodded. “Okay.”
As much as he wanted to stay, he knew he needed to get back to his room before Fajo finished with his friends. 
“I must leave you now,” he said. “I will do everything in my power to see you again soon.”
Faith whimpered and gave him another hug, which he returned. Data found it difficult to pull away. In fact, the hug lasted twenty-three more seconds than the average hug between them.
Once they parted, he kissed her goodbye and stood. Before he reached the door, he turned back. She sat on the edge of the bed, arms wrapped around her trembling frame.
“Please remember to eat,” he said.
She gave him a small smile. “I will.”
Data left, meeting an anxious Mala in the hall. The Oz’od hurriedly brought him to his room. Despite Data’s cooperation, it was still sparse. Fajo did not seem to trust the android enough to allow him anything more than the decorative chair to sit upon.
Before Mala closed the door, Data turned to them.
“Please help Soshi take care of Faith,” he said. “She is special to me and I do not wish for Fajo to harm her.”
“Fajo no harm Faith so long as Faith listen,” Mala said.
“May I ask you something?”
“What?”
“Your friend who infiltrated the Enterprise, how did you intend to bring him back home?”
Mala pursed their thin lips but remained silent.
“Ah. I see. You did not intend to.”
“Toka died for Oz’od safety. Will be remembered.” Mala made a move to close the door.
Data cocked his head in confusion. “Toka is not dead.”
Mala froze, eyes meeting his. “You lie!”
“I am not lying,” Data said. “The Enterprise captured Toka but they are still very much alive. We would not kill a new life form without provocation.”
“Fajo said Toka dead,” Mala said in a soft voice.
“I believe it is Fajo who lied to you,” Data said. “Once Faith and I get back to our companions, I would be more than happy to reunite you with him.”
“Lies! Fajo said you lie to trick Mala!” With that, they slammed their hand on the panel and the doors shut, leaving Data alone once more.
He had suspected convincing Mala would be difficult. He only hoped he had been able to plant the seed of doubt.
With nothing else to do, Data sat in his chair and waited for Fajo. He knew the man would seek him out after the meal. He only hoped he performed well enough to his captor’s satisfaction. 
It was two hours and fifty minutes later when Fajo strolled in. He seemed to be in good spirits, which Data took as a good sign.
“That went spectacularly,” Fajo said with a large grin. “See? It's not so bad doing what I say, is it?”
“I did not appreciate Delegate Enil’s interest in Faith. His comments were inappropriate.”
“Is that a hint of jealousy I detect?”
“I cannot feel jealousy.”
Fajo waved dismissively. “So you say. Don't worry about Enil. He's harmless. Well, mostly harmless. You and your little girlfriend certainly made an impression. I thank you for the delightful dinner.”
“What do you plan to do next?”
“Well, we have to keep moving, obviously,” he said. “Thankfully this ship has a spectacular cloaking device. One of a kind and built by the Oz’ods themselves. There are a few items of mine that I would like to get back. I expect you to help me with them.”
“And Faith? She will still remain safe, correct?”
Fajo snorted with disgust. “Ugh, Faith, Faith, Faith. That's all you talk about! I have half a mind to sell her to Enil and be done with it.” He glanced at Data with a smirk. “Thankfully, she's worth more to me right where she is.”
“I have made it clear I will listen to you so long as she's safe,” Data said. “You do not need to keep threatening her safety.”
“But it's so fun. Every time, I swear I'm going to get a reaction out of you.”
“Do you wish to elicit an emotional response from me? You know I do not have them.”
“You say that but I theorize that you must. In some capacity,” Fajo said. “You just need the right push. No matter. We have plenty of time to test my theory. In the meantime, enjoy your room. I'll be by tomorrow to discuss a job I'd like you to do.”
He turned to leave but then paused and spun back around on his heel. 
“One more thing,” he said. “I am a reasonable man. If you continue to perform so spectacularly, I may consider allowing you and your little pet to share a room together. Keep that in mind.”
Data was surprised by the thought, though he did not trust Fajo’s charity. Still, planning their escape would be easier with Faith by his side. 
“I will do my best,” he said.
Fajo smiled brightly. “I know you will. Sleep tight!” He chuckled at his own joke as he left.

Redesigning instruction and addressing inequities: 6 TED-Ed Innovative Educators share their learnings

Earlier this year, alumni of the TED-Ed Innovative Educator (TIE) program embarked on their respective Innovation Project journeys – uniting their myriad gifts and experiences to tackle global issues in education. TIEs started the process by developing four Opportunity Statements based on problems they wanted to address in education right now. Those are:
1. Redesign instruction: Reimagine how instruction can comprehensively meet the needs of all students.
2. Redesign how we address inequities: Reimagine how to empower teachers and communities to address race, equity, inclusion, and justice issues.
3. Assess innovations from the COVID-19 pandemic: Assess how to carry forward the innovations created during the pandemic into full-time in-school instruction (and continue to build a culture of school/district innovation).
4. Reinvest in educators’ well-being: Reinvest in how best to support our teachers and admin, professionally, and personally.
Each TIE picked an Opportunity Statement, went through design-thinking exercises to determine their project focus, and went out to test their potential solutions in their communities. Over six months, they met on a call every two weeks, provided updates on their projects, and gave feedback on each other’s progress. Their final learnings were then shared among the group with presentations. Below we highlight some key takeaways from projects that were completed around two Opportunity Statements: redesigning instruction and redesigning how we address inequities.
Redesigning instruction
Georgios Villias, Biology Teacher (Athens, Greece)
“Nourishing student curiosity, offering outdoor opportunities for observation, making inquiry and project-based learning a routine, offering more autonomy that is the recipe for a successful rise in student awareness and empowerment.”
For Georgios, identifying approaches that actively engage students and further their development of knowledge and skill is paramount to education. Being a biology teacher, Georgios surveyed a few of the National Geographic Certified Educators to spotlight successful practices within the National Geographic Learning framework that encourage student engagement and motivation. To effectively implement these practices, he suggests educators must be willing to exit their comfort zones and make necessary adjustments in curriculum, training, and/or policy.
Mahrukh Bashir, Director/Teacher (Tangerang Selatan, Indonesia)
“Education is all about providing rich learning experiences customized to a child’s learning needs, talents, and dispositions. We want an environment that is rich, encouraging, and engaging.”
Mahrukh designed a heutagogical framework where students receive personalized, structured learning based on their interests, capabilities, and talents. With continuous feedback from parents, teachers, and students themselves, Mahrukh was able to successfully implement this framework into her school. As a result, students were able to hone in on their respective passions while also developing their own autonomy in their educational spaces.

Redesigning how we address inequities
Aletha Williams, Lead Teacher (Houston, Texas)
“I chose to participate in the Innovation Project because it gave me the opportunity to speak about the racial inequalities that are happening in schools and because of the things that I was seeing in my own district.”
Aletha’s project aimed to create a framework that allows teachers, students, and parents to address school board members at town halls regarding inequalities occurring in the district. After a successful test run of her town hall meetings concept, the district is now changing the student code of conduct to be more inclusive. Additionally, they are looking into hiring more teachers of color and including a Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to serve the district.
Tim Leistikow, High School Teacher (Minnesota, USA)
“Empowering starts with radical truth-telling. I was humbled by the vulnerability that my colleagues showed while sharing with one another about what it means to be white educators and how whiteness shows up in ways that can negatively impact the learning environment.”
Tim centered his project on discussions about racial and social justice issues in the classroom and leaning into the discomfort that can arise during them. He was inspired by TIEs of color who worked on uplifting marginalized voices and navigating inequity in their communities. He realized that understanding his role as a white, male educator would allow him to show up more authentically for his students. During the past spring, he met with other white educators to unpack their racial identities and explore ways to better learning environments for all students.
Tobye Ertelt, Digital Teacher Librarian (Colorado, USA)
“I want to be able to help students find ways to use their voices without fear. There are too many people within the system right now that are unwilling to change. We have to shift the power source to those who want to see the change and enact the change.”
Tobeye’s innovation consists of creating both an equity center that would serve as a safe-space for students to seek support of all kinds. With these platforms in place, students will learn how to become advocates, find resources to support themselves in various arenas, seek mental support, embrace diversity, and become allies. During the project Tobye was able to start a pilot for the “Virtual Equity Center,” with plans to move it into a physical space down the road.
Wiputra Cendana, Educational Technology Coordinator/Academic Lecturer (Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia)
“This project is to [provide] a new learning model as I synthesize from a particular current teaching experience. I am finding that in lecture we have really high standards and want the students to go up to that standard, but we need to meet the students where they are. We are trying to find a win-win solution and bring them up together.”
Wiputra and his colleagues conducted a research study that tested a framework for approaching inequities in a college classroom, specifically in the context of varying learning speeds. The study demonstrated that modifying the curriculum and providing additional teaching materials enabled slower learners to pass their Computer and Learning Media course. To implement these findings in broader contexts, it is imperative that instructors maintain high flexibility and a design process for each step of learning (before, during, and after lessons).

hi!! i just found you while poking around for gobelins students on twitter and i love your art, congratulations on passing!! i was wondering if you have any advice on the written exam or tips on how to prepare for it? i heard that the written exam can be given in english if french isn't your first language...
I’ll try to be very concise about this andmaybe pin it to my profile because I was in your shoes exactly a year ago, andif I made it here I think you have a considerable chance of making it too as long as you’re willing to put work into it. I want totell you what I wish I had been told.
Disclaimer: I’m definitely not the best personto ask. I’m self-taught and my situation may and will differ a lot from yours,but on top of that, bear in mind Gobelins has a ~5% admission rate. During theinterview I shared room with a person who had a stunning portfolio and had been doing two years of prepclasses to get in Gobelins specifically and didn’t get in. I don’t even understand what brought me in, but I will try to at least give you a detailedguide of what *I* did to prepare.
Important: READ THE “MODALITÉSD'ADMISSION” DOCUMENT THREE TIMES AT LEAST. It has so much usefulinformation and so many points you can’t afford to skip. If your French isflaky, ask for a friend who speaks it fluently to help you out. You *must*understand it fully if you want to get in and avoid needless calls to theschool.
Also, keep an eye on the website often. Allthe information I provide here vis a vis dates only applies to a time periodthat’s already gone and I can’t predict if the dates will be exactly the sameevery year, so double check for yourself!
French
If you don’t speak French now start asap, anddo your Duolingo and “Apprendre le Français avec TVMonde” exercisesevery day. The lessons for the 4-year program are in French and while they canbe understanding with foreigners I just strongly recommend for the sake ofcommon sense that you pick up the language, just to make the most of the chanceif you’re given it.
However, you can def do the written exam in English! The exam will be printed and handed to you in both languages, it’s not so much a test to see your writing skills (ironically) than it is to prove your drawing ones.
If you pass that first round, while they won’t require any certification, they *will* test how good you are understanding and responding in French during the interview process of the second round.
I also recommend you take special conversational classeswith a private teacher or with a French speaker the couple of weeks before theoral exam to really gain fluidity, it makes a difference.
Mental Health
Preparing for all this will be sustainedstress over a long period of time. While it’ll be intensive and will demand alot of you, bear in mind that a mentality of “every minute I spend notworking on this is a minute lost” is only going to harm you. It’s alrightto take breaks, have a social life, and space for leisure while you do prepwork. It’s alright to not be drawing every single hour and rest your mind soyou can go back to work with all your might.
Try to be demanding and to pushyourself out of your comfort zone, but do it at your own pace and alwaysleaving space for breaks and stuff that will take your mind away from it whenyou need to, like friends, videogames, or just drawing for fun. A healthy business to leisure ratio is always between ½ and 2/3.
Meditate if you can, too, just 10-15 minutesevery day. I recommend the Headspace app and it has helped me keep my coolduring really tense moments.
Open Days
Go to the open days at Gobelins in January ifyou can! I took a plane for the weekend just to go, it was expensive but Ireally, really do not regret it. Here’s why:
DONOT MISS THE FIRST DAY. They hold portfolio reviews and while you may not haveyours ready just yet, it’s the perfect chance to get an insider point of viewof how well you’re doing right now and how far from your goal you are. Make aprovisional one (or do like I did and just make a tumblr blog and throw inwhatever you’d want them to assess) and arrive early to ask for a spot at thequeue.
Youget to talk to other first-year students, who will showcase their portfolio andanswer all your questions about the admission process, the school and whateverother questions you may have.
Youget to attend conferences where they explain each of their programs in detail,and the head of the department will also answer all yourquestions.
Admissions usually open right in the middle of the open days. By all means grab a seat at the computer room and save yourself a spot in the exam process asap.
Also,if you’re a foreigner like me, you should totally go to the international classand see if you can spot somebody from your same country (or who at least speaksyour language) to hang out with for a bit.
Site note: That international class is adirect entry to 3rd year specifically for English-speaking students who alreadyhave animation experience. I didn’t apply for that so I can’t tell you muchabout it, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you want in, they say it’seasier than the main track, too.
Preparing for the written exams
First off, draw every day. Even if it’s notprep work or studies all the time, you can indulge in your OCs, OTPs, whatevermakes your heart race, but draw it and do it every day. It doesn’t have to beideal or finished either, but what really matters is that you get used todrawing a lot and make a habit of it. Quantity, consistency and speed areimportant skills for animators to have as I’ve been told and they will be looking for it since one of the parts of the inteview includes evaluating how much paper you’ve filled in a year.
Grab all the exams you can get a hold of fromthe Gobelins site and do them in the specified time (they’re on the Concepteuret Realisateur de Film d'Animation class page). When you’re done with that do themagain. Ask for feedback from your teachers and improve on them. Take aperspective book (I recommend “Perspective for Comic Artists”), take a gesturedrawing book (“The Vilppu Drawing Manual” or “Gesture drawingfor animation”), take a storyboarding and character design class (I tookSchoolism’s, which are 15$/month per class, it’s very affordable) and that’llgive you a good frame of reference. And when you’re done with the exams andknow them by heart, make your own exercises. Then do the exams again. Andalways ask for feedback, critique to train yourself against every weak pointthat you don’t want the jury to catch you doing when you do the actual exam.
Sign up for figure drawing class right now,with or without teacher (I signed up to an art club without one), the soonerthe better, and go there frequently, once or twice per week, to the short posessessions (up to 15 minutes per pose, 2 to 5 minutes would be ideal). Don’tbother doing portraits or long poses because again, what you want is to producea lot, fast. Put a lot of focus on gesture drawing, movement and speed. It’llnot only be a big chunk of your portfolio if you do pass the first round, butit hones your draftsmanship like no other exercise. You can additionally trainat home with websites like QuickPoses or the New Masters Academy figure drawingvideos, but I’d really want to stress that live models work so much bettersince they force you to interpret a 3D person.
Go to your local zoo as well, once a week oronce a fortnight, and do animal studies. If you can bring a friend it’ll help alot making it more fun but try to get used to drawing shapes that are nothuman. Understand their anatomy and try to apply what you’re learning aboutgesture from the figure drawing classes.
Draw in the street, in museums, go to a placethat inspires you or that you find curious and draw it. Draw the people topractice your characterization and caricature skills. Draw buildings to showyour perspective skills. And just whatever catches your eye. Environments and perspective are important and I strongly recommend you start by drawing from observation.
If you have a cool idea in mind or find agood exercise on tumblr to try that isn’t this, do it! The teachers appreciateinterest in several fields and if you can showcase that you’re a curiousstudent with plenty of interests they’ll consider you more seriously. I didconcept art and digital painting on the side and it ended up being a mainthing of my personal project.

You don’t have much time to elaborate or fix your mistakes so Iwould recommend you do your practice with pens (so you get used to not erasinglines and being confident with your strokes) and pencils (especially if you canget both regular, mechanical and color pencils to layer your drawings forcomplex exercises like perspective). During the exam don’t even think aboutbringing pens in case you do make mistakes you need to erase though, they arejust really good training.
Side note: if you can, all this while, make space for personal projects.Nothing that you must finish, but just produce a lot of your own content. Pick apodcast and do visual development for it, do fanart, iterate on a movie’s shots, developyour own stories through visual storytelling, do character design, storyboards,comics. Steal ideas if you must to get the creative juices flowing (but don’tpost it or pretend they are your own :V). Get acquainted with projects, explore a fewideas so that the moment you’re out of the exam room when you’re done with thewritten exam you not only have a deck of projects to choose from but are alsoacquainted with the process of carrying one forward (and also have a littlework already done).
Preparing for the oral exam
The oral exam consists of 3 parts.
A first part in which you’re not present, andthe jury will judge your portfolio, sketchbooks and demo reel without you for 30 minutes.
A second part, where you must introduce thejury to an original personal project of your own made for the admissionprocess, and defend it (in French).
A third part, where the jury will just ask youquestions (they’re usually very friendly) and judge your viability as a futureclassmate. Just be yourself!
The portfolio should just have your best, besweet, short and to the point. There is a limit of 40 pages including coversand the personal project so choose your best pieces from between your projectsand your practice. It should also cover three main points
Your skillset, which should be covered byyour studies, schoolwork, observation work and partly (but not mainly) the rest of your artwork.
Your capacity for creation and personal vision(aka what your interests are as an artist), which should be covered by the restof your artwork and other projects of your own.
Your capacity to convey and develop ideas, messages andstories through visual narration, which should be your main, personal project.
I recommend you throw in both sketches andunfinished stuff along with your most detailed and refined pieces so the jurycan have a good idea of your process, your way of solving problems and how faryour skills go. Storyboards, animatics and comics will always be a positivesince you’re aiming to study a medium that is sequential.
Also, if you can, pick other students’ portfolios for reference. They don’t need to be Gobelins or even students though, if you find a good philosophy to build your portfolio around, by all means go for it. It’ll give you a good idea of what needs to be there and what can be left out.
Lastly, while they stress that you *don’t* need toknow animation to get in since that’s what you’re applying to, you can bring ina 2-minute demo reel. I made mine with an animatic and a few animationexercises on my own, but I want to repeat what they told me, the intentionisn’t to show how good you are at it already (then what can they teach you?)but to show that you’re interested in the medium and are eager to learn.
Final note
You’re applying for an animation school, keepthat in mind always. An animator is not an illustrator or a concept artist(even if they can easily become one), and what sets them apart in my opinion is the focus on speed, gesture, quantity, and most importantly, making drawings that feel alive andthat tell something. Understand the craft, ask other animators, read books onanimation, anything you can get your hands on will help.
One of the points that I feel are the mostimportant about all this is included in the Modalités d'Admission text, whichsays that they look into a quality that would literally translate to “opennessof spirit”. I think that speaks for how open minded you are to new ideas,to working with others, to learning and to considering new points of view.
Again I don’t have all the answers, but if youare “open of spirit” and really make an effort to dive into theanimation world, look for resources and friends in this world I’m certainyou’ll find them.

6 Habits That’ll Affect Your Workouts More Than Sex

We’ll admit it: Fitness enthusiasts are intrigued with how sex, or abstaining from it, can make or break their training.
Plenty of athletes—from boxer Manny Pacquiao to entire soccer teams—have claimed to swear off sex before big fights, games, or during high-intensity training phases because they fear it’ll affect their performance. (A counterpoint: Ronda Rousey claimed to have even more sex to boost her testosterone while training for fights.)
But does it make a difference?
Muscle & Fitness took a deep dive into whether having or swearing off sex truly affects athletic performance. The verdict? A resounding maybe.
Before you get yourself, ahem, engorged with pent-up sexual energy in the name of committing to a strict fitness regimen, you should know: We spoke to two doctors—Dr. Erich Anderer, chief of neurosurgery at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, and Dr. Daniel Marcovici, who specializes in sports medicine at One Medical in New York City—about the habits that are really affecting your workouts. Start by remedying these bad habits first.

1. Poor Sleep

“There are definite links between lack of sleep and the derangement of normal body processes important in fitness,” says Anderer. “Sleep deprivation disrupts the body's response to insulin, can impair fat-burning mechanisms, and can even affect the decision-making processes in your brain.” This can result in overstimulating the brain’s reward center, which can lead to other bad habits like overeating.
Marcovici suggests improving your sleep by checking your sleep hygiene. “Invest in blackout curtains or an eye mask to reduce ambient light, especially if you’re living in a big city,” he explains. You need to make your bed a space that your brain associates strictly with sleep. “Make sure you’re using your bed only for sleep and intimacy—no computers, phones, social media in bed. Engaging in other activities in bed trigger to your brain that it’s time to be awake and active.”

2. Maintaining a Poor Diet

As a general rule, you should be eating small portions that consist of lean proteins, unprocessed foods, and vegetables. “The old food culprit used to be fat. Now we're finding out that sugar is really the enemy,” Anderer says. “Drink plenty of water and unsweetened drinks, and when you get a sugar craving, think fruit not chocolate.”
When it comes to timing your macros to optimize your workouts, Marcovici suggests consuming your simple carbs, such as fruits, oats, and dextrose immediately pre- or post-workout. “Your body preferentially burns carbs, especially during high-intensity exercise, such as CrossFit or boxing, and you’re going to want something quick-burning to help fuel the workout,” he says. “Immediately post-workout, muscles have burned through their fuel source, glycogen, so carbs are useful here as they are preferentially taken up by muscle for repair and restoration of glycogen stores.”

3. You're Stressed

From an evolutionary standpoint, stress is a good thing. It activates quick fight-or-flight responses that are essential for survival. “A small build-up of stress before a competitive event, a race, or an intense workout can actually augment an athlete’s focus and performance,” Marcovici explains. “The problem is that this system is not designed to be chronically turned on, and we’ve built a society around ourselves that actually rewards people for constantly experiencing high levels of stress—just ask any of my lawyer or finance patients.”
While many people associate stress with mental health, it has serious physical repercussions as well, and these physical manifestations of stress wreak havoc on your gains. “Stress causes the release of cortisol which, in excess, can have detrimental effects on your workout,” Anderer says. “It can reduce protein synthesis and tissue growth through the reduction of growth hormone. These processes are detrimental to the recovery phase after a hard workout and the subsequent building of lean muscle mass.”
On the upside, exercise has been shown to be a great stress reliever, so be sure to continue your fitness regimen. That said, make sure you’re making real strides to relieve everyday stress—or you won’t be making the fitness progress you want.

4. You’re Not Taking Care of Your Mental Health

At the base level, your mood can simply kill your motivation to get to the gym. But depression has real physical manifestations—fatigue, decreased appetite, soreness and muscle pain, and insomnia, to name a few. “Depression is a common problem I see in my patients, and it impacts every aspect of their life,” Marcovici says. “Undiagnosed or untreated depression can not only impact your ability to exercise, but can also be dangerous.”
Thankfully, exercise has been proven to alleviate depression. “The body produces natural endorphins which can cause a sense of well-being,” Anderer says, “but exercise has also been studied as a natural treatment for depression.”
But chronic depression is serious, and if you think you’re dealing with depression or anxiety, Marcovici stresses that you need to speak with your doctor immediately. (Yes, your general practitioner can refer you to a mental health specialist.)

5. You’re Not Recovering Correctly From Your Workouts

For some hardcore fitness buffs, taking a few days off from training is painful, but it’s absolutely essential if you’re serious about improving. “Overtraining is a problem and can cause people to stop making gains in performance. Although some people don’t believe in overtraining—a couple Eastern European Olympic weightlifting coaches come to mind—I think there is something to it,” Anderer says. “The mechanism isn't fully understood, but it could have something to do with the lack of adequate amino acids to heal, repair, and build the muscles necessary for performance.”
For people who can’t stand the idea of going a day without being active, Anderer and Marcovici agree that rest days don’t mean you need to sit on the couch.
“It’s a common misconception that a rest day means you should be completely sedentary,” Marcovici says, “but you’re better off doing a low-impact, low-intensity activity on a rest day, such as yoga, walking, light swimming, spending some time on mobility and range of motion exercises. It keeps your body active and makes it easy to dive back into a good, hard workout the next day.”
Anderer adds: “At least lay off the primary muscle groups that were just worked on. If you're into high-intensity interval training or have really fried multiple muscle groups, you may want to cross-train with an easy bike or swim. Allowing the muscles to heal up will result in greater gains with your workouts.”
And if you want to take a day of being lazy on the couch, you don’t need to feel bad about that either. “There’s nothing wrong with the occasional lazy day,” Marcovici says.

6. Blaming Genetics and Body Chemistry

Let’s face it: some people are genetically predisposed to gain muscle, lose fat, and excel at certain physical activities. But don’t let that mindset poison your gains. “Certain parameters in body composition and performance—such as VO2 max, the body's oxygen-consuming capacity, or slow- vs. fast-twitch muscle dominance—are either partly or wholly determined by factors unique to our individual bodies,” Anderer explains.
But both Anderer and Marcovici are quick to point out that any genetic limitations shouldn't deter you from customizing your workouts to hit your goals. “While there’s something to be said for people with a genetic predisposition to look a certain way or perform better at a certain sport, no amount of raw talent or genetic odds should affect how intense you’re actually able to train,” Marcovici says.
Anderer suggests playing to your strengths. “Doing interval runs or fartlek workouts can increase your VO2 max, for example,” he suggests. “If you've determined that you're more fast-twitch muscle-dominant, you tend to excel in exercises employing bursts of speed and power, but probably fatigue quickly. You should generally play to your strengths, but also add in a workout or two a week targeting the slow-twitch muscles in your body. One way of doing this would be to generally lift heavy with a low-rep scheme and work in kettlebell or medicine ball workouts, and then to alternate this with some isometric or circuit training to round things out.”
Remember: All the raw talent and genetic gifts in the world won’t make a difference if you’re not putting in the time to train and making a plan toward your specific goals.

STARTUPS AND LISP
Notice all this time I've been talking about the designer. Most writers do. Thanks to Jessica Livingston and Chris Steiner for reading drafts of this. Good runners still get tired; they just get tired at higher speeds.1 All the computer people use Macs or Linux now. Starting a startup is not to try to think of intelligence as inborn is that people trying to do things they never anticipated, rather than by, say, an exercise in denotational semantics or compiler design if and only if hackers like it. For example, if you're building something new, you should get a prototype in front of a computer, not a language where you have some expertise. It didn't matter what type. A design choice that gives you elegant finished programs may not give you an elegant design process. Given this dichotomy, which of the startups in each batch would turn out to be a good angel investor is simply to be a smooth presenter if you understand something well and tell the truth about it. Not understanding that investors view investments as bets combines with the ten page paper mentality to prevent founders from even considering the possibility of being certain of what they're saying.
That was the phrase they used at Yahoo.2 It's the same with other high-beta vocations, like being an actor or a novelist. I've never had a sharply defined identity. Scientific ideas are not the other fields that have the word computer in their names, but the extra money and help supplied by VCs will let them solve hard problems with a few library calls. One is that in a startup is merely an ulterior motive for curiosity.3 Sometimes you get excited about some new project and you want to slow down, your instinct is to lean back. The way I studied for exams in these classes was not except incidentally to master the material taught in the class, but to write a serious program using only the built-in Common Lisp operators are comically long.4 In print they had to cut the last item because they didn't have the kind of people who are famous and/or language level support for lazy loading. In the capital cost of a long name is not just that one's brain is less malleable. There's not much we can learn, or at least Common Lisp, some delimiters are reserved for the language, suggesting that at least some users who really need what they're making—not just people who could see themselves using it one day, sitting in my cubicle, I jumped up like Archimedes in his bathtub, except instead of Eureka! Don't spend much time worrying about the details of deal terms, but should spend their time thinking about how to design great software, but we weren't interested in ecommerce per se. Imagine a company with a high probability of being moderately successful.
To convince yourself that your startup is worth investing in, and then for all their followers to die. This sometimes leads people to conclude the question must be unanswerable—that all languages are equally good. Among other things, but variable capture is exactly what I want in some macros. Really hot companies sometimes have high standards for angels.
To see how, envision two things: a the amount of effort a startup usually puts into a version one, it would probably be painless though annoying to lose $15,000 investments.7 There must be things you need initially: an idea and cofounders.8 I wanted. What and how should not be kept too separate. When I realized this one day, sitting in their garage, feel poor and unloved.9 No one would know what side to be on most. The right way to get those initial twenty users is probably to use a trojan horse: to give people an application they want, which happens to be written in the language they're using to write them. The more labels you have for yourself, the dumber they make you. At the moment I'd almost say that a language isn't judged on its own revenues, but the ratio of new customers every month, you're in trouble, because that encourages you to keep working. But they're not dangerous. Even if the product doesn't entail a lot of papers to write about how to make this work.
That's the secret. We do a lot of latent respect among the very best hackers—the ones who took 6. I've told you so far. Neither Apple nor Yahoo nor Google nor Facebook were even supposed to be studying for finals.10 What matters is not the limit you can physically endure.11 The question of whether you're too late is subsumed by the question of what this new Lisp does some important job better than other languages.12 The lower of two levels will either be a language in its own right, and that painting was the frenzied expression of some primal urge.
It's not surprising that the quality of programmers at your company starts to drop, you enter a death spiral from which there is no secret cabal making it all work. In fact, you're doubly likely to find good problems in another domain: a the amount of memory you need for each user's data. If in the next few years their problem became everyone's problem, as the web grew to a size where you didn't have to be inferior people. But that isn't true. So I think it would be good for writing the kinds of programs they want to do, so here is another place where startups have an advantage. By all the other makers, the painters or the architects, I would have realized that there was a name for it: playing house. At the very least, we can mitigate its effects.13 But they are relentlessly resourceful. Seems interesting. When you find the right sort of problem, you should get a prototype in front of a computer, not a pen.14 The key word here is just. 6 Habits That’ll Affect Your Workouts More Than Sex

We’ll admit it: Fitness enthusiasts are intrigued with how sex, or abstaining from it, can make or break their training.
Plenty of athletes—from boxer Manny Pacquiao to entire soccer teams—have claimed to swear off sex before big fights, games, or during high-intensity training phases because they fear it’ll affect their performance. (A counterpoint: Ronda Rousey claimed to have even more sex to boost her testosterone while training for fights.)
But does it make a difference?
Muscle & Fitness took a deep dive into whether having or swearing off sex truly affects athletic performance. The verdict? A resounding maybe.
Before you get yourself, ahem, engorged with pent-up sexual energy in the name of committing to a strict fitness regimen, you should know: We spoke to two doctors—Dr. Erich Anderer, chief of neurosurgery at NYU Langone–Brooklyn, and Dr. Daniel Marcovici, who specializes in sports medicine at One Medical in New York City—about the habits that are really affecting your workouts. Start by remedying these bad habits first.

1. Poor Sleep

“There are definite links between lack of sleep and the derangement of normal body processes important in fitness,” says Anderer. “Sleep deprivation disrupts the body's response to insulin, can impair fat-burning mechanisms, and can even affect the decision-making processes in your brain.” This can result in overstimulating the brain’s reward center, which can lead to other bad habits like overeating.
Marcovici suggests improving your sleep by checking your sleep hygiene. “Invest in blackout curtains or an eye mask to reduce ambient light, especially if you’re living in a big city,” he explains. You need to make your bed a space that your brain associates strictly with sleep. “Make sure you’re using your bed only for sleep and intimacy—no computers, phones, social media in bed. Engaging in other activities in bed trigger to your brain that it’s time to be awake and active.”

2. Maintaining a Poor Diet

As a general rule, you should be eating small portions that consist of lean proteins, unprocessed foods, and vegetables. “The old food culprit used to be fat. Now we're finding out that sugar is really the enemy,” Anderer says. “Drink plenty of water and unsweetened drinks, and when you get a sugar craving, think fruit not chocolate.”
When it comes to timing your macros to optimize your workouts, Marcovici suggests consuming your simple carbs, such as fruits, oats, and dextrose immediately pre- or post-workout. “Your body preferentially burns carbs, especially during high-intensity exercise, such as CrossFit or boxing, and you’re going to want something quick-burning to help fuel the workout,” he says. “Immediately post-workout, muscles have burned through their fuel source, glycogen, so carbs are useful here as they are preferentially taken up by muscle for repair and restoration of glycogen stores.”

3. You're Stressed

From an evolutionary standpoint, stress is a good thing. It activates quick fight-or-flight responses that are essential for survival. “A small build-up of stress before a competitive event, a race, or an intense workout can actually augment an athlete’s focus and performance,” Marcovici explains. “The problem is that this system is not designed to be chronically turned on, and we’ve built a society around ourselves that actually rewards people for constantly experiencing high levels of stress—just ask any of my lawyer or finance patients.”
While many people associate stress with mental health, it has serious physical repercussions as well, and these physical manifestations of stress wreak havoc on your gains. “Stress causes the release of cortisol which, in excess, can have detrimental effects on your workout,” Anderer says. “It can reduce protein synthesis and tissue growth through the reduction of growth hormone. These processes are detrimental to the recovery phase after a hard workout and the subsequent building of lean muscle mass.”
On the upside, exercise has been shown to be a great stress reliever, so be sure to continue your fitness regimen. That said, make sure you’re making real strides to relieve everyday stress—or you won’t be making the fitness progress you want.

4. You’re Not Taking Care of Your Mental Health

At the base level, your mood can simply kill your motivation to get to the gym. But depression has real physical manifestations—fatigue, decreased appetite, soreness and muscle pain, and insomnia, to name a few. “Depression is a common problem I see in my patients, and it impacts every aspect of their life,” Marcovici says. “Undiagnosed or untreated depression can not only impact your ability to exercise, but can also be dangerous.”
Thankfully, exercise has been proven to alleviate depression. “The body produces natural endorphins which can cause a sense of well-being,” Anderer says, “but exercise has also been studied as a natural treatment for depression.”
But chronic depression is serious, and if you think you’re dealing with depression or anxiety, Marcovici stresses that you need to speak with your doctor immediately. (Yes, your general practitioner can refer you to a mental health specialist.)

5. You’re Not Recovering Correctly From Your Workouts

For some hardcore fitness buffs, taking a few days off from training is painful, but it’s absolutely essential if you’re serious about improving. “Overtraining is a problem and can cause people to stop making gains in performance. Although some people don’t believe in overtraining—a couple Eastern European Olympic weightlifting coaches come to mind—I think there is something to it,” Anderer says. “The mechanism isn't fully understood, but it could have something to do with the lack of adequate amino acids to heal, repair, and build the muscles necessary for performance.”
For people who can’t stand the idea of going a day without being active, Anderer and Marcovici agree that rest days don’t mean you need to sit on the couch.
“It’s a common misconception that a rest day means you should be completely sedentary,” Marcovici says, “but you’re better off doing a low-impact, low-intensity activity on a rest day, such as yoga, walking, light swimming, spending some time on mobility and range of motion exercises. It keeps your body active and makes it easy to dive back into a good, hard workout the next day.”
Anderer adds: “At least lay off the primary muscle groups that were just worked on. If you're into high-intensity interval training or have really fried multiple muscle groups, you may want to cross-train with an easy bike or swim. Allowing the muscles to heal up will result in greater gains with your workouts.”
And if you want to take a day of being lazy on the couch, you don’t need to feel bad about that either. “There’s nothing wrong with the occasional lazy day,” Marcovici says.

6. Blaming Genetics and Body Chemistry

Let’s face it: some people are genetically predisposed to gain muscle, lose fat, and excel at certain physical activities. But don’t let that mindset poison your gains. “Certain parameters in body composition and performance—such as VO2 max, the body's oxygen-consuming capacity, or slow- vs. fast-twitch muscle dominance—are either partly or wholly determined by factors unique to our individual bodies,” Anderer explains.
But both Anderer and Marcovici are quick to point out that any genetic limitations should deter you from customizing your workouts to hit your goals. “While there’s something to be said for people with a genetic predisposition to look a certain way or perform better at a certain sport, no amount of raw talent or genetic odds should affect how intense you’re actually able to train,” Marcovici says.
Anderer suggests playing to your strengths. “Doing interval runs or fartlek workouts can increase your VO2 max, for example,” he suggests. “If you've determined that you're more fast-twitch muscle-dominant, you tend to excel in exercises employing bursts of speed and power, but probably fatigue quickly. You should generally play to your strengths, but also add in a workout or two a week targeting the slow-twitch muscles in your body. One way of doing this would be to generally lift heavy with a low-rep scheme and work in kettlebell or medicine ball workouts, and then to alternate this with some isometric or circuit training to round things out.”
Remember: All the raw talent and genetic gifts in the world won’t make a difference if you’re not putting in the time to train and making a plan toward your specific goals.

6. Blaming Genetics and Body Chemistry

Let’s face it: some people are genetically predisposed to gain muscle, lose fat, and excel at certain physical activities. But don’t let that mindset poison your gains. “Certain parameters in body composition and performance—such as VO2 max, the body's oxygen-consuming capacity, or slow- vs. fast-twitch muscle dominance—are either partly or wholly determined by factors unique to our individual bodies,” Anderer explains.
But both Anderer and Marcovici are quick to point out that any genetic limitations should deter you from customizing your workouts to hit your goals. “While there’s something to be said for people with a genetic predisposition to look a certain way or perform better at a certain sport, no amount of raw talent or genetic odds should affect how intense you’re actually able to train,” Marcovici says.
Anderer suggests playing to your strengths. “Doing interval runs or fartlek workouts can increase your VO2 max, for example,” he suggests. “If you've determined that you're more fast-twitch muscle-dominant, you tend to excel in exercises employing bursts of speed and power, but probably fatigue quickly. You should generally play to your strengths, but also add in a workout or two a week targeting the slow-twitch muscles in your body. One way of doing this would be to generally lift heavy with a low-rep scheme and work in kettlebell or medicine ball workouts, and then to alternate this with some isometric or circuit training to round things out.”
Remember: All the raw talent and genetic gifts in the world won’t make a difference if you’re not putting in the time to train and making a plan toward your specific goals.

6 Habits That’ll Affect Your Workouts More Than Sex

We’ll admit it: Fitness enthusiasts are intrigued with how sex, or abstaining from it, can make or break their training.
Plenty of athletes—from boxer Manny Pacquiao to entire soccer teams—have claimed to swear off sex before big fights, games, or during high-intensity training phases because they fear it’ll affect their performance. (A counterpoint: Ronda Rousey claimed to have even more sex to boost her testosterone while training for fights.)
But does it make a difference?
Muscle & Fitness took a deep dive into whether having or swearing off sex truly affects athletic performance. The verdict? A resounding maybe.
Before you get yourself, ahem, engorged with pent-up sexual energy in the name of committing to a strict fitness regimen, you should know: We spoke to two doctors—Dr. Erich Anderer, chief of neurosurgery at NYU Langone–Brooklyn, and Dr. Daniel Marcovici, who specializes in sports medicine at One Medical in New York City—about the habits that are really affecting your workouts. Start by remedying these bad habits first.

1. Poor Sleep

“There are definite links between lack of sleep and the derangement of normal body processes important in fitness,” says Anderer. “Sleep deprivation disrupts the body's response to insulin, can impair fat-burning mechanisms, and can even affect the decision-making processes in your brain.” This can result in overstimulating the brain’s reward center, which can lead to other bad habits like overeating.
Marcovici suggests improving your sleep by checking your sleep hygiene. “Invest in blackout curtains or an eye mask to reduce ambient light, especially if you’re living in a big city,” he explains. You need to make your bed a space that your brain associates strictly with sleep. “Make sure you’re using your bed only for sleep and intimacy—no computers, phones, social media in bed. Engaging in other activities in bed trigger to your brain that it’s time to be awake and active.”

2. Maintaining a Poor Diet

As a general rule, you should be eating small portions that consist of lean proteins, unprocessed foods, and vegetables. “The old food culprit used to be fat. Now we're finding out that sugar is really the enemy,” Anderer says. “Drink plenty of water and unsweetened drinks, and when you get a sugar craving, think fruit not chocolate.”
When it comes to timing your macros to optimize your workouts, Marcovici suggests consuming your simple carbs, such as fruits, oats, and dextrose immediately pre- or post-workout. “Your body preferentially burns carbs, especially during high-intensity exercise, such as CrossFit or boxing, and you’re going to want something quick-burning to help fuel the workout,” he says. “Immediately post-workout, muscles have burned through their fuel source, glycogen, so carbs are useful here as they are preferentially taken up by muscle for repair and restoration of glycogen stores.”

3. You're Stressed

From an evolutionary standpoint, stress is a good thing. It activates quick fight-or-flight responses that are essential for survival. “A small build-up of stress before a competitive event, a race, or an intense workout can actually augment an athlete’s focus and performance,” Marcovici explains. “The problem is that this system is not designed to be chronically turned on, and we’ve built a society around ourselves that actually rewards people for constantly experiencing high levels of stress—just ask any of my lawyer or finance patients.”
While many people associate stress with mental health, it has serious physical repercussions as well, and these physical manifestations of stress wreak havoc on your gains. “Stress causes the release of cortisol which, in excess, can have detrimental effects on your workout,” Anderer says. “It can reduce protein synthesis and tissue growth through the reduction of growth hormone. These processes are detrimental to the recovery phase after a hard workout and the subsequent building of lean muscle mass.”
On the upside, exercise has been shown to be a great stress reliever, so be sure to continue your fitness regimen. That said, make sure you’re making real strides to relieve everyday stress—or you won’t be making the fitness progress you want.

4. You’re Not Taking Care of Your Mental Health

At the base level, your mood can simply kill your motivation to get to the gym. But depression has real physical manifestations—fatigue, decreased appetite, soreness and muscle pain, and insomnia, to name a few. “Depression is a common problem I see in my patients, and it impacts every aspect of their life,” Marcovici says. “Undiagnosed or untreated depression can not only impact your ability to exercise, but can also be dangerous.”
Thankfully, exercise has been proven to alleviate depression. “The body produces natural endorphins which can cause a sense of well-being,” Anderer says, “but exercise has also been studied as a natural treatment for depression.”
But chronic depression is serious, and if you think you’re dealing with depression or anxiety, Marcovici stresses that you need to speak with your doctor immediately. (Yes, your general practitioner can refer you to a mental health specialist.)

5. You’re Not Recovering Correctly From Your Workouts

For some hardcore fitness buffs, taking a few days off from training is painful, but it’s absolutely essential if you’re serious about improving. “Overtraining is a problem and can cause people to stop making gains in performance. Although some people don’t believe in overtraining—a couple Eastern European Olympic weightlifting coaches come to mind—I think there is something to it,” Anderer says. “The mechanism isn't fully understood, but it could have something to do with the lack of adequate amino acids to heal, repair, and build the muscles necessary for performance.”
For people who can’t stand the idea of going a day without being active, Anderer and Marcovici agree that rest days don’t mean you need to sit on the couch.
“It’s a common misconception that a rest day means you should be completely sedentary,” Marcovici says, “but you’re better off doing a low-impact, low-intensity activity on a rest day, such as yoga, walking, light swimming, spending some time on mobility and range of motion exercises. It keeps your body active and makes it easy to dive back into a good, hard workout the next day.”
Anderer adds: “At least lay off the primary muscle groups that were just worked on. If you're into high-intensity interval training or have really fried multiple muscle groups, you may want to cross-train with an easy bike or swim. Allowing the muscles to heal up will result in greater gains with your workouts.”
