Song Fest is back!

For round one, we had some lovely fics based on songs from One Direction’s extensive track list.

For round two, we’re going past One Direction and beyond—the sky is the limit!

It is estimated that there are over 200 million songs in the world, so the possibilities for fics are endless!

Rules

What are the restrictions on which songs can be picked?

The song must have lyrics. Instrumentals are pretty, but we want fics based on the words of a song!

A recording of the song must exist somewhere online. Now what do we mean by “a recording”? Basically just a link that will allow someone to listen to the song. This could be Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, TikTok, anything, as long as it links back to an audio of the song.

The song does not have to be officially released or professionally recorded. There are plenty of awesome songs out there that never made it to air, but they’re still inspirational! These are allowed as long as there is a recording of it!

The song does not have to be full length. There are a lot of indie artists on TikTok who have teased a quick thirty seconds of a song. If that thirty seconds inspired you, you can use it as the basis for a fic.

One Direction’s and the boys’ solo songs are also allowed.

What will prompts look like?

When prompt submissions open, you can submit songs along with a specific prompt, or you can just submit a song by itself. For example, prompts may look like this:

Based off of the song Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran - Louis is older and has grown apart from his four best friends from childhood into his early twenties. He finds himself reminiscing on the good times, and he decides he wants to track them down and see if he can organize a reunion.

A Larry fic based off of the song Paper Rings by Taylor Swift where Harry is the song’s narrator.

A fic based off the song Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes.

You can be as creative as you would like when coming up with prompts and writing fics. You can follow the song very closely or just use part of it for inspiration. As long as the relationship to the song can be identified, you can come up with whatever you’d like!

You can write any pairing or even no pairing as long as the fic contains at least one of the five boys—Harry, Louis, Liam, Niall, and/or Zayn. Girl Direction, smut, omegaverse, polyamory, and trans characters are all allowed if you wish!

This fest is for people 18+ only. The fics will not be moderated, and any content is allowed to be written as long as it is appropriately tagged on AO3.

There is no minimum or maximum word count requirement. You can write multiple fics, but please make sure you can handle the extra load. Co-writing fics is also allowed.

Your fic title does not need to include the song title or lyrics that inspired you, but it can if you want it to!

Having your fic betaed is preferred but not required.

Please only submit completed fics. If you need to drop out or you would like an extension, please send a message to let me know. I understand that things can happen.

Listened to the musical Psister Psycho today, a thing I’d known for ages existed as a weird bit of that 00s Britcom history that is my period of interest, but it had never been filmed or anything, and it didn’t occur to me until this weekend to check if, for example, a full audio recording might be available on SoundCloud.

I’d read the description before – that it was written by the comedian Danielle Ward that this musician she worked with named Martin White, it starred the sort of various people whose careers tended to overlap with Danielle Ward (Anna & Katy, Margaret Cabourn-Smith), it was a musical about a robotic killer lesbian nun performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007. So I had an idea in my head of what sort of thing it probably was. Probably very silly and with not a lot of actual structure, just an excuse to have an hilariously over-the-top character do wacky things and sing wacky songs. I had a feeling that something like that might be hard to follow in an audio-only recording, be mostly about the chaos created in the room. But I listened to it anyway.

The biggest thing that surprised me, when I actually listened to the audio, was that it had a plot. I mean, not an incredibly intricate plot. But it was a plot, with enough structure and clear-cut separate characters to be fairly easy to follow on audio alone. It stands up even without being able to see the wackiness, because I found myself genuinely invested in the journey they took us on through dialogue and lyrics. I came out of it thinking… they shouldn’t really advertise the “killer robotic lesbian nun” thing, because we don’t actually find out all those things until the plot has moved along a bit, and that’s kind of a spoiler. I was surprised to learn that this musical had enough of a plot to have aspects that I’d consider a spoiler.

I was prompted to look this up by the release of Daddy Issues, Danielle Ward’s sitcom that just came out, and I said about that one that I didn’t love everything about it, but thought it was good overall, and my favourite parts of it were the parts that felt most specifically like Danielle Ward’s style. One of the clearest examples of that, I thought, was having one of those “comedically violent sitcom characters”, but instead of just comedically carrying two many knives or whatever, she’s in prison for trying to have her fiancé murdered. That feels like a very Danielle Ward thing to do, to really commit to the violence.

This musical sure does back up my view on that. Danielle Ward plays the titular killer robotic nun herself, and a running joke I found very funny was that they’d keep making it look like they were going to offer a deeper explanation or mitigation or even redemption of her violent tendencies – but no, every time they pull back and say she just really wants to kill everyone. Because she likes killing. And sort of because she’s a robot, but mainly she likes violence. I love how much of Danielle Ward’s comedy revolves around finding violence funny.

But anyway, I found the script very funny compared to the loose shambolic thing I’d been kind of expecting. There were really good jokes in there. Characters I could keep track of. Margaret Cabourn-Smith playing the naïve innocent role opposite Danielle Ward’s violent streak in a way that I found amusingly reminiscent of the personas they fell into in Do the Right Thing, though obviously with fewer robots in the latter. That was enormous fun to listen to.

I also listened to Gutted, a musical they did a few years later, also written by Danielle Ward with music by Martin White, and featuring a lot of the same cast, though this one had Isy Suttie as the main character. Isy Suttie got to be wildly, incredibly violent in this one, committing a whole bunch of murders while being egged on by that sketch group that Thom Tuck used to be in with Humphrey Kerr and Danielle Ward’s husband. This also starred Michael Legge as vicar with some incredibly funny lines, at least a couple of which sounded so much like Michael Legge’s humour that I think they must have let him write and/or ad lib some.

This one was slightly harder to follow on audio-only, I think because it was bigger than the earlier musical, with more characters and probably more going on set-wise, I definitely missed some stuff. But I got the idea, which is that Isy Suttie wants to kill people. I mean, obviously the real meaning of the play is still that Daneille Ward wants to kill people, and she got her friends to act it out. I managed to follow the plot just enough, throughout the musical, to get what was going on in the ending, and I found the ending very funny. Also, there were a bunch of genuinely good songs in there, which I say as someone who’s not usually into musicals.

Well that was a lot of fun, I’m so glad I happened upon those SoundCloud links. And I really wish Danielle Ward were still doing stand-up, or at least had filmed more than one special before she stopped. I might have to re-watch Seventeen now.

OH my god hi i'm actually super honored that you decided to ask me about this stuff ^_^ Now stop me if you've heard of these before/listen to them already but; here are some artists i like that you might like as well based on what i'm reading here, i tried to pick some more niche ones but who knows!...

DJ Technorch is an absolute classic. If you know Gabber you've most likely heard of Technorch, but let me put this one in the list just in case you havent. The Best Selection albums are probably the best place to start, then branch out to other stuff by them...

Algorithm Dude. ALGORITHM DUUUUDE. Woefully niche artist making "YTPcore" music, which is essentially loud as fuck speedcore with dated meme audio clips put in. This is as loud as it gets and I LOVE it. THIS ALBUM SAMPLES 101 TRACKS is extremely fun to start with, but pretty much all Algodude releases are as crazy as the other. (10/10 would get tinnitus again)

While we're still on the topic of Elysian Tunes, SIX TON DOG has XPLOSIVEZ and it is an incredible work of gabber. Sadly, this is also the only album under that alias but you can find some more tracks in THE TUNES albums. Dont fuck with Elysian Tunes heads there's like 10 of us but with your help there could be 11....

bye2 is a master of jungle/breaks. Her songs go in like 10 different directions at once and feel like a whole self-contained symphony. Uses a lot of samples of other stuff as well, but it all fits so well and feels original. Metamorphose is my favorite album of hers, but the soundcloud contains a whole lot more stuff, which includes tracks that lean more towards gabber, and play with distortion.

Nanoray is one of the more popular artists on this list i think? But he's gotta be a contender for my favorite artist of all time. His work evolves a lot over the years, and last year's breakcore is the next year's gabber - ZAPPER is a very well loved drum n bass album by him; but i also love the somewhat-hidden gem that is the gabber album TOYBOX. WOULD ALSO like to mention SPIRAL​ 「​1995​」, which leans HARD into hardcore techno. It's one of a kind. (also Spiral+ is a thing. bonus tracks!!)

Kaizo Slumber is so important. I've listened to him for a month but my life wouldn't be the same. The Kaizo Demos and Kaizo Manifesto are more "light-weight" DnB with elements of gabber, but later releases like How Are We Feeling Today (personal favorite) go full gabber+digital hardcore and it fucking ROCKS.

Have you listened to Gynx, when will you listen to Gynx...This is some serious speedcore. This is what maximum Fun sounds like to me.

February! This is a short playlist because I saw I it was almost at 2 hours and 28 minutes long and then got it to 2 hours and 28 minutes and then couldn't change it. Because how cool is that?!

There are a lot of what could be construed as romantic or pseudo-romantic songs on here but I think actually a lot of songs are about big feels in general so it's more of an accident. There are also a couple of songs on here ('Do You Want To Touch Me' and 'Tumbling Down') that I will only ever associate with Velvet Goldmine, which is honestly one of my favourite movies ever.

I could have sworn 'To Be Rich - Should Be A Crime' has shown up on monthly playlists before, but looking back at spreadsheets I guess not. I first heard it as the cover by Cola Boyy, which absolutely bops. I think about this song a lot.

“RAMONA”: SUBSTANCES AND SITUATIONSHIPS

I believe that everyone who really loves a genre, a band or music in general has one album or song that was formative for them. A piece of artistic work that, while maybe not the objective best, came into someone’s life at the perfect time and cemented a deep, personal impression.

For me, “Ramona” by Kill Bill: The Rapper, is that album.

The 2014 debut album came during the Soundcloud era, where independent rap artists were beginning to post their work to streaming services, with an especially high focus of “vaporwave” aesthetics. This aesthetic style consisted of lower fidelity equipment, intentionally messier audio mixing, heavy uses of electronic sounds and synthesizers, all while visually combining these elements with ‘90s pop culture media. The end product results in a oftentimes spacy, nostalgic atmosphere with slower beats per minute and typically sadder topics. This indie scene played in direct contrast to the more mainstream aggressive, trap records of the time (though through artists like XXXTENTACION and others indie “lo-fi” music would find mainstream success), and to me, Ramona is the best example of indie internet rap in that era.

“Ramona”, named and stylized after the main love interest in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, essentially offers reflection. Scattered across the album’s 16 tracks are discussions of the artist’s substance abuse problems, insecurities and failed relationships throughout his past.

There is an almost hypnotic aspect regarding how these tracks flow into each other and form a full, cohesive project. Sonically, the vocal distortions across some tracks, synth throbs and eclectic sampling of video game and cartoon sound effects work together to create a dreamlike atmosphere. This template serves as an instrumental backdrop that emphasizes the accuracy of Bill’s introspections and musings.

It also serves to emulate the dissociation Bill feels from his significant weed consumption, as seen in the following line off the track Abandoned 2:

“Man I’m withdrawn, grippin’ a big bong, a tall cup / I haven’t even made it, people sayin’ I’m washed up.”

As direct and literal as this specific example may be, it is representative of a larger motif around drug and alcohol consumption in the album. As Bill flaunts his routine drug and alcohol addictions, he also tends to reveal individual insecurities he faces. Combined across multiple verses, it’s clear that as a result of some sloppy relationships and mental health issues, the rapper has fallen into a cycle of using weed to avoid his complex, hurt emotions.

In turn, he feels ambitionless and slow to act while on the drug, while without it his pains become increasingly more difficult to bear. It’s for this reason that the opening track Backwoods is centered around the drug, its name even a reference to a brand of cigar typically used for blunts (don’t do drugs kids!).

Backwood’s melancholy outlook through its chorus of “I’ve never been as happy as right now / But shit, I’ve got to cope with the fact that it dies down” also therefore contributes to this drug theming, as his happiness naturally slowing due to an unexpected life event parallels the high and decline of taking a substance.

When not addressing his substance problems, Bill is often commenting on his shy, anxious and otherwise insecure nature, both through some vague metaphors and individual relationship accounts.

A particularly standout piece from Backwoods that covers his mental and personal conflicts is as follows: “Anxiety-ridden, I hide in the rhythm/ I’m Ficus, burning bush/ I turned to Christ then burned the book / It turned to ice; I learned to cook it; work at night, I turned and booked it”

I love this set of lines because I think it captures the whole range of success and struggle he faces within the project. The burning bush analogy works both as a double entendre, further hinting at his chronic weed smoking, while segueing into his conflicts with religion; whether a loss of faith or an inability to form spiritual connections, a turn to faith wasn’t for him. Despite his addiction and an anxiety that’s so crippling it only allows him expression through art, he still was able to find a way to grind and succeed professionally through his long hours or “work at night”.

In a lot of ways, that back-and-forth pull between a harsh critique of one’s flaws and a positive outlook for growth and accepting what has changed dominate the album as a whole.

The first few tracks see a mainly negative spiral. Hola, while mostly a freestyle-esque song with no clear topic, hints at former lacks of boundaries and hurt from relationship in imagery of sacrificing his time and giving up parts of his life for someone who didn’t do the same. Fuck deals with self-destructive tendencies, wanting to “smoke until it kills me slow”.

Chinatown is the track where all that negativity really starts to stall for the first time. Instead of mourning his current vices, wishing to spiral further, Bill spends the entirety of the song reflecting over a summer relationship, one that left him with such profound emotion he remembers how life seemed to center around this woman, as seen in the following lines:

“A trillion little stars dust the blanket above us/ How small are we while the cosmos breathes, but for a second my scale changed.”

For as crass and blunt as rap can be, this line stands out as one of his more delicate passages as far as word choice, mirroring how pretty and perfect he viewed this woman. What exactly happened between the two is never expounded upon, though given a line “and I just want my fucking summer back”, it is clearly implied to have ended negatively.

The next song, Dream Eater, really cements Chinatown as a momentary daydream or reflection Bill wakes out of. Dream Eater, for as happy and peaceful as its instrumental and sampling is, ultimately deals with complacency versus being content. The features by Rekcahdam and Rav empathize this, with lines about finding happiness of being able to socialize and stay close with friends despite work, family and relationship issues.

This ebb and flow between optimistic apathy and self-destructiveness continues through tracks like Black Coffee, which focuses on a failing relationship he struggles to communicate in, an examination of his childhood in Then There’s Me and a more delinquent approach of partying and sexual escapades in Pork.

Sitting among these tracks is one of the most powerful and distinct songs on the entire album, Good Luck Chuck. Rather than rapping introspections through a mix of metaphor and video game references, Good Luck Chuck sees Kill Bill directly crafting a narrative. Here, a woman on hard times and with deeper medical school ambitions slowly becomes a stripper, falling in love with and eventually being betrayed via murder by one of her clients. As strange of a comparison as it might seem, it heavily reminds me of Sonya’s story in “Crime and Punishment”. Here, an innocent woman is forced into a occupation that involves dealing with creepy or shameful people and lust, though the woman in Good Luck Chuck is in a more voluntary position. We see an examination into the mental state of the man each woman is directly romantically involved with, both of which have aims to murder. However, in Good Luck Chuck the man murders her out of a parasocial attachment; as a regular attendee of the strip club, he’s sickened that other people get to see her instead of him and allows that resentment to build in him to the point of murder. While by no means the most replay-able, easy listen music, I think Good Luck Chuck stands as one of the most powerful tracks on the album.

The closing tracks show an inability to grapple with change and loss from Bill, drunkenly stumbling into a girl who’s rejected him in About Last Night… and lamenting how much time has passed since a failed crush in Summertime (The Overflow).

As that final track ends, a sample plays from the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, specifically the sound effect when the player restores their lives. While he may still be grappling with those failed relationships and how to navigate healing outside of them, ending the album on that sound effect implies that there’s a chance at new life, that while things have ended he will continue to go anew and form new experiences despite the history of heartbreaks and mental health hurt he shares prior.

This album is by no means perfect. Some of its word choice and rhetoric in its relationship flashes can feel borderline objectifying (especially when rough, biological terms like ‘female’ are chosen instead of woman, etc.) and the chorus on Chinatown is arguably grading on the ears. However, for a debut project, “Ramona” is so thoroughly cohesive and introspective in its message that it has and continues to elicit a strong, emotional response from me every time I play it. While rough, the album will always deserve its flowers to me.

We are all capable of succeeding to some degree and there’s room for everyone at the top but overcoming self doubt/imposter syndrome and focusing on creating authentic art without any outside influences/compromises is the ultimate goal for any artist. You know them but you don’t and the cognitive dissonance that comes with those complex feelings. What are your plans for the coming months? Yes there is. Cassandra: It all started by me. I had already a solo project but I was looking for something different. I had so much music inside me that just wanted to come out and make some noise. I wanted to express certain sounds, atmospheres, and dimensions that I hadn't been able to before. And that's where the "loud" part comes from - that desire to make some noise and let it all out. And with the help of the amazing guys in the band, I was able to bring that "noise" to life. And that's how ENNIELOUD came to be. Where do you find inspiration? We got artists from all different backgrounds, coming together and vibing off each other's styles and inspirations. I mean, we've got electro beats represented by BeeOff mixing with my world full of blues and soul. Lauryn Hill, Aretha Franklin are my muses as well as Goldfrapp, but I am crazy for Moby and the UK trip hop scene. Cassandra: Music is my life, ever since I was born, it has been always a part of me. My toys were my dad’s instruments. I feel music like something so familiar. Now, I feel it like an anatomic part of me. I cannot exclude her from what I am.
