TV Guide Dan Vol.55, April 2025 Issue ft. Fuyuno Mio Interview (translation below)
Publication: April 14, 2025
"In "No.1 Sentai Gozyuger," Tono Hoeru, played by Fuyuno-kun, is an outcast part timer with no friends or family. Please tell us what you find appealing about the role."
Fuyuno: Even at his part time jobs, Hoeru is unfriendly, has a bad attitude, and gives off the impression of being somewhat difficult to approach…However, he shows his gentle side to Aoi-kun, the son of the owner of cafe "Half Century" (Tega Sword Village), and little by little, his fellow Gozyugers have been teasing him, so while it may not look like it, I think he actually has a cute side to him.
"Do you personally see any similarities with him?"
Fuyuno: I'm often told that the first impression people get from me is that I'm scary, and that I give off a "don't talk to me" kind of aura. However, I've also been told that there's a gap between that and when I actually try to speak up, so that might be something we have in common.
"What is it like on the film set?"
Fuyuno: Tokusatsu productions present an unrealistic world, so I have to use the power of my imagination to the fullest when performing. Thanks to that, I've been able to expand my emotional range, and it's allowed me to experience various things that only tokusatsu can offer. Filming for the first episode was especially memorable. There's a scene where I performed while my body was suspended by a wire. Still, being suspended in the air messed with my senses…So, to be honest, I was extremely scared, but I concentrated on the take and did my best! And then, the scene with Karuma-san in episode 8 was also memorable. I've always been a big fan of Karuma-san, as I also watched his Youtube channel, so it overlaps in regards to Hoeru's feelings for Kuon. The scene where he says to Kuon, "Nii-chan is always Number One," was exactly how I felt, so it was very easy for me to perform it.
"As the leader, is there anything you keep in mind when working on set?"
Fuyuno: I don't particularly think of myself as a leader. However, during the period between our first meeting and the start of filming, I tried to be proactive and talk to the other four playing Gozyugers. Thanks to that, we've become good friends, and I'm able to be myself on set. Everyone's able to clearly separate their work and private lives, so there's no need for me to be particularly enthusiastic about "doing something in a certain way."
"Are you the type of person to initiate a conversation?"
Fuyuno: I'm shy, so it's usually difficult for me to start the conversation. However, since we'll be working together for the next year, I want us to become like best friends, so I'm doing my best to talk to them.
"By the way, what are you called on Gozyuger's set?"
Fuyuno: It's "Miorin." Normally I'm addressed as "Mio," but when I told them that my nickname during middle school was Miorin, they started calling me that.
"You said that you're shy, but even in your private time, are you the type who prefers to be alone?"
Fuyuno: The thing is, I'm a really active person (laughs). Recently there's been a baseball craze within me, and I want to get better at it. I often go to a batting cage, but…it's difficult. I can't hit the ball at all.
"There's no doubt that you're active. For the batting cage, do you go together with your friends?"
Fuyuno: Yes. I have good friends from my hometown who live in Tokyo, so I'll often go with them. I was on the soccer team during my time in high school, and many of the club members moved to Tokyo. When I was in middle and high school, I always told everyone around me that I "wanted to go to Tokyo," so I tend to wonder, did I have an influence on them~?…probably not (laughs).
"After you moved from Yamaguchi to Tokyo, you said you were scouted and started working as an actor, but was that something you were originally interested in?"
Fuyuno: I didn't move to Tokyo to become an actor, I simply wanted to go to Tokyo. At the time, I admired it because I thought it was a cutting edge place, and when my mother was working in Tokyo, I'd often travel there. Rather than wanting to do something, I just always thought about how I absolutely had to go to Tokyo after graduating high school.
"So when you were scouted, did you make your decision without much hesitation?"
Fuyuno: That's right. At first, I didn't have that much interest in doing acting work…however, just when I had entered high school, I started watching various dramas and movies and realized that "there was such an interesting world out there!" Now, I'm really happy that I was able to move to Tokyo and start my entertainment activities.
"Now that you've actually started working as an actor, what do you find most rewarding?"
Fuyuno: It's the sense of accomplishment when a work is completed. Filming is full of challenges, and we're doing our performances through trial and error. Even when I first saw the finished footage for Gozyuger, there were various directions given that I didn't understand at the time of filming, but Hoeru after his transformation into GozyuWolf, as well as the entrance of the Robo was really cool…When I saw that, I felt it was the most rewarding thing.
"Even when you watch dramas and movies in your private time, seeing things from a different perspective instead of just following the story…have you noticed any changes like that?"
Fuyuno: I have. Acting is diverse, and I don't think there's a "right way of doing it," so I'll often look at various actors and think, "I'll try to incorporate this part of their performance into my own." Still, I am who I am. I don't just want to imitate others, I want to value my own individuality as well.
"What do you consider your "individuality" to be?"
Fuyuno: I consider myself to be a rather unusual person. Even at the work site, people often tell me that they like the mood I create, as well as my desire to speak.
"You're rather calm for your age. Also, at the cast roundtable discussion for this production, it was said that you have a nice voice."
Fuyuno: Before Gozyuger, I had never received any praise for my voice, so it was a new discovery for me. I want to value my good qualities, including that.
"By the way…in reference to your role as the lone wolf Hoeru, what "alone XX" have you done?"
Fuyuno: Things like going to the movies and karaoke alone, or…?
"To begin with, are you reluctant to do things alone?"
Fuyuno: Not at all! What I'd like to do most right now is travel alone. I travel alot, but it's always with friends or family.
"Where would you go when traveling alone?"
Fuyuno: Southeast Asia would be a good choice. I've been to Europe and America, but I haven't been to Southeast Asia. I'd like to experience that unique atmosphere.
"Fuyuno-kun, you have a level 2 "World Heritage Site Certification." What World Heritage sites do you recommend?"
Fuyuno: If I were to recommend some…the places I want to see are Italy's Venice and France's Mont Saint Michel! Venice is so beautiful, that it's called the "City of Water," and I love Italian food, so I'd like to try some authentic pasta and pizza. Also, when I previously went to France, I tried to buy tickets for Mont Saint Michel the day before, but to my surprise, they had sold out…! That's why I really want to go.
"On that note, please tell us what Fuyuno-kun's future goals are."
Fuyuno: I want to become an actor who can convey realism. I want to perform in a way that shows not only the good parts of humanity, but also the bad parts. For that reason, I'd like to challenge myself to various roles, and to come out of my shell.
"Are there any actors that you admire?"
Fuyuno: It's Yokohama Ryusei-san. He's an actor that I really love, and I've been closely following all of the films he's appeared in over the past few years. And of course, this also includes the currently airing Taiga drama "Berabo~Tsuta Ju Eika Osamu Yume Hanashi." Besides his acting, his stance is beautiful, and his speech is very polite, elegant, and cool. We've never met, but I'd like to perform with him someday. Currently I'm still inexperienced, so I hope to have the opportunity to work with him after I've grown in various areas.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew    Someone had blundered.    Theirs not to make reply,    Theirs not to reason why,    Theirs but to do and die.    Into the valley of Death    Rode the six hundred.
- Alfred Lord Tennyson, The Charge of the Light Brigade (1854)
The Crimean War does not figure large in modern history books. Most people would be hard-pressed to name its dates (1853–1856) or its combatants (the Ottoman Empire, England, and France vs. Russia). Although largely eclipsed by more momentous events, this conflict left an interesting linguistic legacy.
Already called the sick man of Europe as early as 1621, the powerful Ottoman Empire was in disarray by the mid-19th century. It had lost Hungary and Greece, and was beset by internal troubles. In 1853 Tsar Nicholas I of Russia said, “We have on our hands a sick man - a very sick man,” and he hinted that it was time for the British to partition the empire. Within months, a dispute arose between Russia and France concerning control over the holy places in Palestine, and it soon escalated into a major dispute with the empire. Russia sent troops to occupy the Turkish states of Moldavia and Wallachia, whereupon Constantinople declared war on Russia. England and France soon joined the Ottomans.
Tumblr media
The most memorable battle of the war was at Balaclava, on October 25, 1854, and it gave rise to two British legends, one highlighting honour, the other incompetence. According to one eyewitness account, a large Russian force had advanced on the Allies at the entrance of Balaclava (a Black Sea port now part of Ukraine). Heavy artillery fire prepared the way for Russian cavalry, and the Ottomans retreated rapidly, fleeing for the port.
This left 550 men of the 93rd Highlanders to stand between the Russian army and Balaclava. The Scots were face-down in a line two men deep on the far slope of the hillside. To the Russians, the hill appeared unoccupied as they advanced. Suddenly the Scots in their red coats sprang up. They had been told there was no possibility of retreat and so they held their ground. As the cavalry halted, the thin red line loosed a volley of deadly musket fire. The Russians wavered, and after two more Scottish volleys, they withdrew. The Highlanders’ victory was commemorated in their regimental magazine, later called the Thin Red Line.
Tumblr media
Another engagement that same day had a quite different outcome. Owing to an alleged error in orders, a light cavalry brigade of 670 commanded by James Thomas Brudenell, seventh Earl of Cardigan, was ordered to charge a Russian position protected by 15,000 infantry, 4,000 cavalry, and 10 cannons. To reach them, the Light Brigade had to ride down a ravine between two hills, each guarded by another 10 guns. The brigade descended, only to find that the cavalry’s Heavy Brigade had not followed in support, and worse yet, the British were cut off in the rear.
The cost was immense, with two-thirds of the British killed or wounded. Although Cardigan had long been considered an incompetent officer, the event was immortalized by poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who in “The Charge of the Light Brigade” emphasised the troops’ gallantry: “Theirs not to make reply, / Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die: / Into the valley of Death / Rode the six hundred.”
Tumblr media
The names of two items of clothing came from that battle and remain in use. Ill equipped for the harsh winter climate, the troops adopted all sorts of clothing to keep warm. One was the ‘balaclava’, a knitted wool cap that covers the head and neck, leaving an opening only for the face. For a time the name also referred to a full beard such as worn by Crimean troops, but that usage did not survive.
The other item is the ‘cardigan‘, a collarless sweater that buttons down the front. It was favored and popularized by the same Earl of Cardigan responsible for the ill-fated Light Brigade charge. Soldiers wore it under their tunics for additional warmth, and Queen Victoria allegedly praised it.
Another Crimean officer whose name became attached to a clothing style was Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, first Baron of Raglan (1788–1855). He had served under Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, and lost an arm at Waterloo. He also distinguished himself during the Crimean War, before he died of cholera. Because of his handicap, Raglan favoured a capelike overcoat with sleeves extending to the neck (rather than the shoulder), and it came to be called ‘raglan’. The coat itself is no longer in fashion, but the sleeve style, called ‘raglan sleeve’ is still used for coats, sweaters, and dresses.

Tips for Choosing the Best Pellet Grill
Tumblr media
In the last year alone, curiosity about pellet grills has increased at an astounding pace, with the number of internet searches almost doubling. Although they have been in existence for more than thirty decades, it is only recently they've earned the name of the Hottest Product at BBQ.
As individuals find out about pellet grills, they immediately understand that we have a range of brands that offer an assortment of versions. And just how can you understand which pellet grill is ideal for you? With more choices than ever, searching for a pellet grill could be perplexing. In a marketplace full of grills which maintain similar capacities, it can be tough to discern what distinguishes one from the other. But if you understand which variables to think about and what attributes to look for, then picking the ideal pellet grill for you is a great deal simpler.
What is the Finest Pellet Grill?
It isn't important if you're speaking about pellet grills, pop music, or pizza, or everybody always wants to know that's the best. While this may look to be a pretty straight forward question, there's not any simple one-word response. Is the ideal pellet grill the very popular one produced by the best selling brand? Could it be the most expensive one using the most innovative features and luxury whistles and bells? Could it be the one which gives the ideal mix of cost and functionality? Truly, the answer is dependent upon you, your way, and your requirements.
Other guides might provide a listing of the greatest pellet grills, complete with hyperlinks (links which are frequently compensated ). But your very best resource is not a listing, but the understanding which can allow you to understand what you are looking in and make sure you receive a pellet grill you're going to be pleased with.

Cost: The Difference Between Cheap and Affordable Pellet Grills
Everybody has their budget, but do not confuse cheap for cheap. Just like other forms of grills, there are lots of cheap pellet grills which look attractive at first glance, particularly if you want to save a little cash. But though an inexpensive pellet grill may help save a little money upfront, it is likely to cost you more in the long term. Components will rust, parts will meltdown, and you'll probably end up replacing any or all that reasonably priced grill over five decades. Finally, you are better off investing in a bit more cash upfront and find an excellent grill which will keep years ahead of time.
An excellent pellet grill is constructed to last and provides years of dependable performance. Bargain toaster grills not just lack the capacities of greater grills, they are more inclined to break down. Regardless of your budget, search for a pellet grill that is built well and provides consistent performance. Thankfully, if the cost is a significant concern, you will find caliber pellet grills for below $500, in addition to high-end pellet grills for under $1,000.
Quality Construction
Tumblr media
Deciding on the Finest Pellet Grill
The very best method to guarantee your pellet grill lasts for a long time to come would be to buy one that is built well and includes quality construction. If you are at the shop, lift the lid and sense its weight--can it be brittle or produced from heavier gauge steel? Pellet grills are not like counter smokers, they do not have to be heavy, but they should not feel fragile either. When you shut the lid, then see how it places on the grill--are there any openings or can it be flush, offering a fantastic seal? It needs to be sturdy, and the joints and seams must fit together snugly, no spaces or openings to allow heat to escape.
Even though it's difficult to lift the lid if shopping on the internet, do your own research, anyone promoting pellet grills needs to have the ability to tell you all that you will need to learn about a specific grill and how it contrasts with other versions.
The vast majority of pellet grills available on the market are made from stained steel. On the other hand, the standard of steel along with the paint may change. An excellent high-temp powder coating paint can resist high warmth without blistering or flaking. Even if the grill body has been painted nicely, you need to appear inside. The fire kettle and diffuser plate possess the capability to rust and are just two of the most frequent elements that require replacement.
While pellet grills created from commercial-grade 304 stainless steel would be the most desired, they come in a greater.
High-quality substances and decent structure permit the grill to keep heat better, which makes it more effective and supplying improved pellet consumption, even in chilly weather. What's more, it's unlikely that a new that provides a finely made barbecue spent much time designing it to optimize airflow or technology a controller board that could hold a tight temperature.
Temperature Range
Based on the kind of cooking that you wish to do, the temperature range could be significant. Every pellet grill is great at Immediate cooking, and many have no trouble hitting any temperatures from 180°F into 425°F, that will be sufficient for smoking, roasting, baking, and grilling. But, it is insufficient for searing, which necessitates a fever of 500-550°F.
A lot of these pellet grills also offer you a direct grilling choice which permits you to cook over an open fire along with cooking over indirect heat.
The same as your kitchen countertop, a pellet grill has to keep a constant temperature so as to generate food. To find tender brisket, the temperature should remain as near as you can 250°F to your whole 12-plus hours its ingestion. A pellet grill's capability to perform this is mainly dependent on its controller board, which is basically the brains of this pellet grill. There are various sorts of controls, and their accuracy and consistency fluctuate. Most can maintain a constant temperature in perfect conditions. However, not all of the controls can preserve a tight temperature from sunlight, wind, and rain.
They feed pellets in stationary cycles which depend on which setting you select. With only three configurations to pick from, however, you have less control over cooking temperatures compared to more sophisticated controls. These controls are usually found on reduced priced pellet grills.
Multi-position Controller -- A step up from 3-position controls, multi-position controls feature a knob using fever configurations which move from 180°F into 420°F at 25° increments and might have an LCD screen. Along with more configurations, these controls offer more temperature controller. But they run on stationary cycles and may simply keep about +/-20°F in perfect conditions--from cold, windy weather they are not as precise and trustworthy.
But such as multi-position controls, they utilize stationary bicycles for providing pellets and therefore are limited in precision to +/-15--20°F.
PID Controllers -- Even the most complex kind of pellet grill control, PID controls use sophisticated algorithms to achieve and maintain the desired temperature in a few levels. But, unlike controls which use fixed cycles, a PID controller consistently measures the grill's temperature subsequently corrects its cycle, including pellets when needed to maintain the proper cooking temperature during the cook. Since they are more complex, PID controls can adapt programmable meat probes which have the capacity to lower the grill's temperature if food is finished automatically. Cooking and size Area
Pellet grills can be found in a selection of sizes for an assortment of needs--everything from mobile models for tailgating to additional large industrial components and built-in toaster grills for outdoor kitchens. When contemplating barbecue dimensions, examine the cooking area in addition to physical measurements to select one which meets your space and way of life.
As with other grills, pellet grills listing cooking area 2 ways: main cooking space, which relates to the most important cooking grate, and complete cooking area, that's the principal cooking grate and any secondary racks. But because pellet grills are mainly indirect stoves, there is in fact not any gap between cooking on the primary rack or the top rack&em; the temperatures are the same. Therefore, a more compact pellet grill using a key grid of 450 square inches and an upper rack of 125 square inches might be a better choice compared to a bigger grill with just a 500 square inch grid.
Larger is not necessarily better, particularly if you're simply paying for space that you never use. The very best pellet grill is the one which fits your requirements. To get an average size household, a pellet grill using the main cooking area of 450-500 square inches must be adequate. Singles and couples may go bigger, while bigger families and people who prefer to entertain should think about bigger pellet grills.
Capabilities and Characteristics
As more pellet grills go into the current market, they are made to distinguish themselves from the competition. One method of doing this is through advanced technology and innovative skills. When comparing pellet grills, examine the entire package, such as its capacities, in addition to which attributes are available and if they are standard or are discretionary.
Popular Pellet Grill Characteristics
You simply plug one end into the controller board and insert another to the meat.
Contained meat probes and if they are programmable-- maybe not every grill which could accommodate a beef probe includes the probe. Some require you to purchase it individually. Additionally, not all of the meat probes along with the management boards that they link to are created equal. Some are only for tracking temperatures.
Direct grilling choice -- As more people search for a single grill to deal with all their smoking and grilling, more pellet grill makers are providing an immediate grilling choice. On a few, you need to get rid of part of the diffuser plate to allow the fires through. Others, such as the Fast Eddy's PG500 possess a permanent dedicated place for direct grilling.
Included secondary cooking racks-- In case you are searching to maximize cooking distance, you are going to want to learn whether a pellet grill may adapt a secondary stand. You will also need to learn if that rack is comprised of an optional add-on.
WiFi capacity -- It should not be surprising that as our lives become more connected, are our grills. Since they have a digital controller board, pellet grills are a natural match for WiFi. Using a connected pellet grill, then it's possible to remotely control and monitor your meat and cooking temperatures from a telephone, tablet computer, or pc...regardless of where you're. It is the greatest set-it and forget-it attribute. There are couple of pellet grills using WiFi capability. However, a lot more are on the road. Each Memphis Grills version, in addition to the Traeger Timberline, have cloud-based WiFi that is simple to join, dependable, and provide a plethora of attributes on the free downloadable program.
It Is a Personal Option
It may be stated often enough: the ideal pellet grill is the one which's ideal for you. Finally, you are the one paying for this, and you are the person who will be cooking it on, so be sure whatever pellet grill you select is the one you're going to be pleased with. Just because you are buddy has no qualms paying high dollar for your most innovative grill on the marketplace does not mean that you should feel bad about spending as much on a grill which really does the things you would like it to do. The best advice: do your homework, be educated, and understand what you are buying. If you're able to do so, you are not likely to encounter buyer's remorse.

The Holy Grail of Racing: One Car for All Tracks
Tumblr media
One car for all tracks means that a single car races competitively on everything from superspeedways to road courses. The goal is producing the best racing possible while keeping costs down. But is it even possible to have one car for all tracks?
A Little History
When we say 'one car', we really mean that the most expensive parts of the car don't change. Remember back to the early-to-mid 2000s, where teams were literally designing a different car for each track. They modified the chassis by adding wooden reinforcements in bumpers and doors for short tracks. Engineers tweaked bodies and spent hours in wind tunnels and developing computational fluid dynamics simulations to optimize body shape for each track. They clear-coated over decals on superspeedway cars so the cars could be as aerodynamically sleek as possible. It cost a lot of money, but they didn't really have a choice. Because everyone else was doing it, you couldn't win if you didn't do it, too. The CoT was NASCAR's first attempt at one car for all tracks. They fixed the body shape and moving all the aerodynamic adjustability to bolt-on pieces that could easily be changed: A wing and a splitter. A spoiler quickly replaced the wing, and NASCAR later changed the body to better reflect manufacturer styling. But they still haven't found the holy grail. Or have they? Can they?
Experimental Variables
NASCAR has always used horsepower as a limiting variable. In addition to limiting speed, horsepower limits also cap the rpms the engine can reach. Keeping engine speed below about 10,000 rpm lets engine builders use mundane, lower-cost materials instead of more-expensive alloys. Restrictor plates (later tapered spacers) were used to limit speed even more at superspeedways. In 2019, NASCAR turned to a second variable: downforce. 2019: Fixed Aero/High Downforce Everywhere In 2019, NASCAR instituted a high-downforce aero package with a big spoiler and splitter, and a sleek underbody. - Spoiler: 8” x 61” - Splitter: 2” overhang, 10.5” wings at splitter ends - Radiator pan: 37” in front tapered to 31” with vertical fences - Aero ducts: Used at majority of oval tracks larger than 1 mile While the XFINITY series had long used a tapered spacer to tailor engine power output, the tapered spacer now came to the Cup Series. The Cup Series uses two sizes of tapered spacers: - 750 HP: 1.17” tapered spacer (for short tracks and road courses) - 550 HP: 0.922” tapered spacer (for oval tracks larger than 1 mile) That gave us fixed aero and three engine configurations: Taper550, Taper750 and Superspeedway. But the 550Taper package could be run with or without aeroducts, The teams actually had four configurations to worry about. Taper550Taper750SuperSpeedwayHigh downforce with aeroductsXXHigh downforce without aeroductsXX While it's still one car, the number of configurations matters. The moneyed teams will do research and development for each configuration. The optimal setup for a Taper550 with aeroducts is different than for a Taper750 without aeroducts. But four is still less than one for each track. 2020 Rules Package The 2019 rules package worked well at the 1.5 mile and larger tracks, but not so well at the shorter tracks. Martinsville and Richmond, in particular, had lackluster races in 2019. Drivers and fans grumbled. NASCAR needed more more variability. So in 2020, they introduced a second, lower-downforce aero package. This package featured smaller spoilers (2.75") and splitters (1/4" overhang), intended to emphasize handling and driver input. They christened this aero package ST/RC (Short Track/Road Course). It was used at tracks 1 mile and smaller, and at road courses. The original aero package -- the high-downforce package -- is called “NA18D” for reasons I haven't been able to figure out yet. If brake ducts are used instead of aeroducts, they call the package NA18D*. Again, it seems like a small change, but each variation opens the door to spending more R&D money. Hold on -- I'm not going to count configurations yet because it gets even more complicated in 2021. 2021 Rules Package In 2021, NASCAR opted to use the low-downforce package at tracks 1.3 miles and smaller (i.e. Darlington and Nashville). Although that doesn't increase the number of configurations, they also added a dirt track, which necessitated a Taper750* engine package. So here's this year's configurations: Taper550Taper750Taper750*SuperSpeedwayNA18DAtlanta, Charlotte, Fontana, Homestead, Kansas, Las Vegas, Michigan, Pocono, TexasNA18D*COTA, Daytona RC, Road America, Indy RCST/RCBristol, Charlotte RC, COTA, Darlington, Road America, Indy RC, Loudon, M'ville, Nashville, Phoenix, Richmond, Sonoma, Watkins GlenST/RC*Bristol (Dirt)SuperspeedwayDaytona, TalladegaAt COTA, Daytona RC, Road America, and Indy RC, teams have the option of running NA18D* OR ST/RC. Teams can run either NA18D* or ST/RC at COTA, Road America, and the road course at Indy. But you and I know that the big teams investigated both possibilities to determine which one would work better. So even though we talk about one car for all tracks, we're really talking about five packages. That's R&D for five different combinations. Of course, all of this will go out the window with the arrival of the NextGen car next year; however, NASCAR will have the same issues of having to tuning that car for all the different tracks the series visits.
Has It Worked? Do We Have One Car for All Tracks?
It's actually hard to say because racing has so many variables. Nowhere is that better illustrated than last weekend's races at Pocono. Doubleheaders are rare opportunities to compare because so many of the variables are, if not constant, at least comparable. The weather was similar, the track surface didn't undergo any massive changes, and teams didn't have a couple months to go back and think about how to better set up their car. They used the exact same package and, in most cases, the exact same car. The race lengths differed by only ten laps. And look how different the races were. The Race Flow Let's start by looking at the Caution-O-Grams for Pocono 1 and Pocono 2. A Caution-O-Gram is my way of graphically showing the race flow.
Tumblr media
Race 1 - Debris and accidents interrupted the race throughout stage 1 and stage 2. - We had eight cautions for a total of 25 laps.- Six of those laps were stage-end cautions - Cautions made up 22.5% of the race, - We had 105 laps of green-flag racing. - There were 8 green-flag runs- Only three were 19 laps or longer. (19, 24, 27 laps) - Three more were 9 laps long - The remaining three were 2, 2 and 3 laps. Race 2 - We had one early accident and then nothing unplanned until a debris caution early in stage three. - We had four cautions, two of which were stage cautions, for a total of 15 laps. - Cautions made up 15.6% of the race- Stage-end cautions were four laps long in race 2, but only three laps long in race 1 - We were left with 125 laps of green-flag racing. - There were 5 green-flag runs- Three were 25 laps or longer (25, 44, 51 laps) - The other two were 2 and 3 laps. The Players We can use the Lead-O-GramTM to compare which drivers led laps during the weekend races.
Tumblr media
Sections with stars indicate green-flag pit stop cycles. Slash fills are leads taken during yellow flags. I used consistent colors for both graphs, so you can see that Larson, Logano, Chastain and Ku Busch, all of whom led laps in race 1, did not lead laps during race 2. Byron and Bowman were the only two drivers who had strong leads in both races. Variable Alert!: The Invert The invert was one of the big differences in variables between the two race, and you can see the effect on the Lead-O-Gram. Buescher and McDowell led laps early because of their starting positions, but weren't factors at the end. Blown tires and fuel strategy impacted who won these races much more than inverting the first 20 finishers from race 1 to set the starting grid for race 2. You can see that the cream rises to the top by comparing the starting and finishing positions of each driver for race 1 vs. race 2.
Tumblr media
Red dots indicate drivers who DNFed one of the two races. If you look in the yellow shaded box, you can see that, out of the drivers finishing in the top 20 on Saturday, only 3 finished outside the top 20 on Sunday -- and one of those was due to a DNF. If you do the same thing for the top 10, you'll see that only three drivers who finished in the top ten on Saturday failed to finish in the top ten on Sunday.
Does This Rules Package Work at Pocono?
Given these two very different races, how do you tell if the rules package works at Pocono? Without Kyle Larson blowing a tire on the last lap in race 1, would people have rated this race as highly as they did? The problem is that there are so many variables affecting a race -- everything from how aggressively a driver pushes his tires to a radio issues that complicate driver-crew chief communications -- that you can't necessarily tell that a particular rules package works or doesn't work on the basis of a small number of races. Let's look at the number of lead changes over the years at Pocono.
Tumblr media
The numbers have gone up and down over the years. But you don't see a big change in this -- or any other metric -- between 2018 and 2019. NASCAR's problem is that the big thing you can tell with a new package is when it doesn't work. It was really clear in 2019 that the high-downforce package was not working at short tracks, and NASCAR changed the package when they saw the problem. Unfortunately, these aren't things you can necessarily predict ahead of time. Engineering, unlike physics, is the art of making compromises. You can't have everything you want, so NASCAR has to strike a balance. They don't always get it on the first try.
Conclusion/Caveat
Remember all of this when the NextGen takes the track next year. Give it the first half of the season before deciding the new package is the best thing in the world or the worst. And remember that it might take some tweaks before they get the NextGen exactly where they want it.

If you're certainly one of these simple folks, it's wise to organize your laser epilation treatments in some moment as it can lessen your vulnerability to additional men and women.
Nausea generally happens in, or even close the location which has been medicated to epilation. External treatment options, like lotions or lotions, usually facilitate the inflammation. The negative effect might or might well not be especially bothersome, but depending upon the spot which has been handled with laser epilation.
The prospect of creating a short-term side effect is quite a bit higher than just developing a long-lasting 1 soon after laser depilation. A short-term complication may persist anywhere from a day to a number of weeks until it moves off absolutely. The momentary unwanted effects which may be seasoned laser hair removals include things like soreness, tenderness, tenderness, swelling, redness, and hyperpigmentation.
A short-term darkening of your skin from this treated spot is popularly known as hyper-pigmentation. Broadly speaking, this momentary complication of laser depilation will evaporate by itself. Many times, the location influenced by hyper-pigmentation may be coated with cosmetics.
As well as these unwanted effects, there's, in addition, the chance of long-term longterm skincare damage. In the event you have made your choice to own laser epilation, you have to be ready to simply accept those pitfalls. Permanent unwanted effects include skin discoloration, scarring, also burns off.
THE PRICE
Typically the costliest regions to deal with laser epilation is your comprehensive neck and face back, and thighs. The typical price of 1 therapy for the whole neck and face or spine hair removal ranges from $600 and $900. Forget Stamped Concrete Walkway: 10 Reasons Why You No Longer Need It
If you do not have the serious temperature we do or you don't have winters, you won't have to go as deep With all the gravel. Make use of your discretion, request an excavation contractor or employ the service of 1 to prepare the gravel for yourself.
We have Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Licensed installers on personnel, and we’ll enable you select the best material and style to make the patio, walkway or driveway of one's desires.
With use of 1M+ shopper reviews and The professionals’ do the job historical past, you’ll have all the data you should generate a employ the service of.
I'm curiuse about recycled asphalt. How can it delay. What do you are doing to keep up it? Thanks for virtually any data you can provide me.
Tumblr media
Any enter about making use of Perma Flex when resurfacing asphalt above asphalt. Does it really hold cracks from the first asphalt area rendering it way up into the new floor?
Shrinkage can not be managed by reinforcement. The higher the h2o ratio the more shrinkage will happen. Also the upper the h2o ratio the decreased the psi power, air pockets form in the capillaries on the concrete allowing for much easier moisture migration which promotes efflorescence and higher fee of deterioration from freeze thaw. Some have advised the next psi or cement ratio and that is great to some extent. The greater cement, the greater hydration equals a lot more shrinkage. The bottom line for a shopper is to make certain whoever spots your concrete keeps the drinking water ratio at the appropriate amount. The advantages of a 4000 psi combine will be diluted by far too much water added. Other variables not talked about Listed below are expansive soil, soil high in alkaline content and the consequences of ground freeze. All have an adverse impact on concrete. I sell concrete but in certain situations asphalt could make extra feeling. Asphalt is much more pliable and allows for movement better than concrete. It can be agreed that appropriate thickness, software and maintenance is essential for length.
From The outline you made available, although exterior may very well be several elements influencing it, the comment about inside the garage in about 90% of the cases place at very poor spot or poor website preparation. To put it simply, the land underneath was not thoroughly compacted and it is now settling under the burden of your garage, and fairly maybe, under the burden in the driveway's cement as well.
As we've stated ahead of, poured concrete is among the most inexpensive hardscape selection. Add attractive stamping and you receive a top end look at 50 percent the cost of pavers.
We use gravel as well. Holds up wonderful. Our only challenge is plowing the driveway indicates some spring raking of gravel back onto the driveway. I'd experience otherwise if we did not reside in a rural space.
Want to see more details on the variations in costs for your personal landscaping or paver project? Look at our contractor comparison worksheet to discover In the event your potential contractor offers all the things you need:
Test the sealer on a little corner of the patio to ensure it will eventually give the ultimate look you would like. Ensure the sealer is utilized in slim coats (having a roller or sprayer, based upon Recommendations) to allow the concrete to develop and permit dampness to escape. The seal should really past for one–three a long time.
I ordered a household having a driveway that is certainly 550 toes extensive. It was carried out in asphalt very pourly and was a constent maintenance nightmare. After i decided to substitute the driveway, I regarded both of those asphalt and concrete. I spoke with many people and the final feeling about nearby asphalt organizations was they were being crooked and constantly made an effort to skimp over the depth in the driveway.
Obtaining the varieties in place with stakes to carry them and environment them to quality using a self-leveling laser is how I do it.
youtube
With regards to concrete and cracking, It's not a make a difference of if but when the surface area will give way due weather variations and settling. Within a moderate, Mediterranean local climate, you don't have to fret a great deal about stamped concrete cracking due to growth and contraction that includes harsh temperature fluctuations, but the area is incredibly likely to crack as years move.

How to choose the right tube according to our installation
The choice of the flue outlet pipe of a wood-burning stove or fireplace is not a matter that should be taken lightly. Although not in all cases it is necessary to be demanding in terms of the quality of these, there are examples that should not be spared.
Tube assembly inside the housing
Ideally, each home would have a cannon-like pre-installation inside the house with a roof flue. In this installation you can use a Hardox 600 Plate, since it is isolated by the house and the chimney cannon, which will prevent us from generating condensation. The different simple tubes that we can find are:
Simple stainless steel tube.
This material is very durable and resistant to corrosion, its name "stainless" says it all. It is a little porous material, a fact that will influence the soot to cost more to adhere to the walls of the tube, which will impact on spacing more times of chimney sweeping. This type of Hardox 550 Wear Resistant Plate is ideal for the entire installation, although it can be complemented with galvanized steel tube to reduce costs. The price of stainless with respect to galvanizing is three times more.
Tumblr media
Simple galvanized steel tube.
This type of pipe is of lower quality than stainless, although well installed we can achieve a durable and economical installation. What we should never do with this type is to install it immediately after the stove or fireplace (this would be the first tube that comes out of the stove). The material it is made of is steel with a high temperature bath of liquid galvanized. The manufacturing process of this one is very simple, which consists of submerging the steel in a bathtub We can then say that a coating has been added to the tube. Although this galvanized protects the tube from corrosion, if we place it just after the stove, the high temperatures that are generated at the exit of the stove (400 or 500 degrees Cº), will cause the galvanized bathIt is scaled or cracked, and will go through a process in which the tube will end up losing this protection. Once the Hardox 450 Wear Plate is in raw steel, it will begin to rust and chop (for example with the moisture of the water vapor coming from the firewood). In what case can we use the simple galvanized steel tube? The correct thing would be to put one or two meters of stainless steel first, and the following in galvanized steel. From the second meter the heat arrives more dissipated, and when it reaches the galvanized tube it does not suffer. Another drawback of the galvanized steel tube is that it is made of a more porous material, which means that soot costs less to accumulate in the walls of the duct. Here in this case we would need more maintenance.
Simple black vitrified steel tube
This conduit is also raw steel with a bath at high temperatures, but in this case the bath is glazed (vitrified) and the finish is a gloss black, which makes it ideal for installations where the tube must be seen (wood stoves and metal fireplaces seen). It can also be used as a substitute for the stainless steel tube, since the price is very affordable (it is between galvanized and stainless), and its durability and resistance has nothing to envy to the high-end.

Easy terminology for Window Glass
Tumblr media
    Easy Window Glass Terminology
You do need to know basic terminology about windows and how many kinds are available, all the while you need not be an expert.
  Picture windows
Picture windows are stationary windows that add views and value. They are flanked by units or narrow casements.
  Hopper windows
Tilt-in hopper windows are installed in crawlspaces and basements. The sash locks when unlatched and the top tips in toward the interior.
  Float Glass
The name Float glass is the process of forming molten glass. It floats molten glass on the molten tin, creating a possible thin glass panel. This is a simple sheet of glass before it is cut, treated, upgraded, and set into a frame. A starting material for your own window.
  Safety Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is an extra-strong, security-enhanced glass created by fusing at least two panes around an interior layer of PVB (polyvinyl butyral). This process utilizes a pressure fusion procedure and high heat to create a super-strong panel. If you require glass to remain put in the frame if it is broken, for safety or security reasons, this would be among your best choices.
  Obscured Glass
You cannot see through an Obscured glass, although it is clear. Obscured glass patterns might be frosted, etched, coated, or otherwise designed so you can’t look through or see further than vague outlines or shadows of what’s behind it. That is why this is the most popular type of glass for bathroom windows, shower doors, and entry door areas.
  Annealed Glass
Annealing is the controlled, meticulous, and slow process of cooling a panel of float glass. By reducing the stress caused to it by quick cooling, the objective of this process is to strengthen the glass, which is the next step for float glass, and further upgrades can be accomplished.
  Heat Strengthened Glass
Heat Strengthened Glass To create annealed glass panels twice as hard, it is reheated above 1200 degrees and then cooled. It’s not cooled quite as fast as tempered glass, so it’s not as powerful.
  Tinted Glass
Tinted glass is added. This can be done for many reasons, including design aesthetic, privacy, and reducing heat from sunlight. Tinted glass may be a form of protection against harmful UV rays.
You usually see tinted glass on vehicles, skylights and decorative panels, but you can also use it for outside windows to bump your privacy factor and reduce harmful UV rays on a particular side of the house.
  Tempered glass
The tempering process takes place only after the glass is finished and is cut into size. Tempered glass cannot be trimmed. The glass is heated to over 1200 degrees and then cooled. And to make heat-soaked tempered glass, the panes are baked at 550 degrees.
Having glass tempered makes it break in a particular manner that is safer than annealed glass. You are most likely to have tempered safety glass in your vehicle so that you can break the window out in case of a crisis.
  Insulated Glass
Insulated glass windows come in a unit that is optimized for energy efficiency.  There are two or three panes of glass, with argon gases in the spaces between the panes. An insulated glass unit also has a desiccant component, ensuring that condensation won’t form in between the panes in which you can not wash off.
Insulated glass windows are an excellent choice for exterior glass that’ll help you keep your heating and cooling costs down.
This coat is sealed with an additional coating, creating a mirror effect. You usually find mirrored glass being used in a decorative capacity, like on walls, furniture, and doors. Low-E Glass, Low emissivity glass is coated to reflect thermal radiation.
Why is this so beneficial for homes during the summer?
Heat is directed away from your property; in winter, your indoor temperature reflects back into the house without escaping through the windows. That translates to reduced heating and cooling expenses. Low-E glass may be a costly investment, but the savings, in the long run, can make it worthwhile.
  Wired Glass Cable
Wired glass isn’t always considered a security glass. However, it is a fire-resistant glass. That is why it’s most widely utilized in schools, hospitals, and other industrial buildings. The grid of wires built into the panes will hold the glass in the frame if it shatters under high heat, such as a building fire.

A person with a little knowledge of computers and technical background always come across to the dilemma regarding what kind of storage they should choose for their computer or laptop (i.e., SSD vs. HDD).
In the article below, we have explained the difference between the two that can help you make a decision.
What are they?
A solid-state drive (SSD) is a solid-state storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. It is also sometimes called solid-state disk, although SSDs do not have physical disks. A storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of a hard disk because of its much greater speed.
A hard disk drive (HDD), is an electromechanical data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. HDDs are a type of non-volatile storage, retaining stored data even when powered off.
Cost
SSD - Expensive as compared to HDD. The cost ranges to roughly $0.20 per GB (for 1TB Drive)
HDD - The cost of HDD is very cheap ranges to roughly $0.03 per GB (for 4TB model)
Power Consumption
SSD - Draws less power (2-3-watts average)
HDD - Draws more power (6-7 watts average)
Capacity
SSD - 1TB maximum for notebooks and 4TB maximum for desktops.
HDD - 500 GB to 2 TB for Notebooks and 10 TB maximum for desktops.
Speed/OS Boot Time
SSD - 10-30 seconds average bootup time
HDD - 30-40 seconds average bootup time
Noise
SSD - No sound
HDD - Very noisy. One can hear the sound of disk spinning
Vibration
SSD - No Vibration
HDD - Spinning of platters can sometime results in vibration
Heat Produce
SSD - Little heat is produced
HDD - More heat is produced as compared to SSD
File Copy/Write Speed
SSD - 200-550 MB/S
HDD - 50-120 MB/S
File Opening Speed
SSD - Up to 30% faster than HDD
HDD - Slower in comparison to SSD
Magnetism Affect
SSD - An SSD is safe from any effects of magnetism
HDD - Magnets can sometime erase data
So, if we compare the points SSD got the maximum point and is a clear winner. It depends on the need of a person to decide what is best for them.
An HDD can be a right choice if:
You need more storage space.
You need a less expensive device.
Or if the OS Boot time doesn’t bother you much.
An SSD can be a right choice for you if:
You like to pay for faster performance.
Don’t mind limited storage capacity. (though customer can go up to 4TB and 60 TB for enterprise version)
Curious about where to buy your SSD or HDD? Please feel free to contact us on 0732451801 or visit our store.

I generally agree with the premise that skills are far more important than stuff, and that knowledge weighs nothing. There are skills that benefit us, every single day and definitely in a disaster – on any scale. However, sometimes collecting knowledge can be a pricey and time-consuming prospect. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t learn, but we need to prioritize as with anything else. We also have to honestly assess our preparedness level, plan, and current lifestyle. Pat’s Preparedness Arc is perfect for this.
Exceptions & Assessments
There are exceptions to some of what I’ll suggest. If you’re a wilderness adventure enthusiast or work in extremes, you already know it. If you truly have lots of free time but zero money after lots of cutbacks, and you have materials/resources lying around and don’t have to buy anything, okay.
If somebody is just into history, a reenactor, a hobbyist, I’m also not talking about that. Mental health clause – you need an outlet. However, interests are just interests and don’t belong in the “but it’s useful/preparedness” category of our time and financial budgets. It belongs under our entertainment budgets.
Please remember those caveats as you read the list. I’m talking about somebody learning from scratch specifically as a survival/preparedness skill in lieu of practicing, buying, or learning something else.
I also hear the argument put forth that somebody’s going to learn a skill or trade because then they can barter it. That is absolutely true in some cases (medical, mechanics, midwives). In others …
We have to ask ourselves: How many people who are preparing or not preparing are actually going to be around and need that particular skill? How do we plan to find those souls who are unprepared to do it themselves, but are expected to have surpluses worth our time and labor to trade for us?
Below are a few things I regularly see pushed as a must-have skill. I’ll break down the pro’s and con’s, and cover alternatives.
Tumblr media
Image: How sustainable is our water plan – and our bodies – compared to our need to make soap or learn primitive fire making methods, or learning an already fairly common trade?
Alternatives After Assessment
Would it be better to develop the knowledge of how to find water by recognizing terrain and land cover patterns, a map of streams and springs in the area, and the physical strength to carry and drag water-level weight through woods, on crappy roadsides and ditches, and repeatedly lift buckets and containers out of a downed well or deep cut with cord, or over the side of a pickup?
Could we instead spend time locating buckets, storage totes, and barrels, the used and wrecked pieces of furniture and equipment on Craigslist and Freecycle to turn them into water catchment, and the afternoon or afternoons it takes to assemble them, to limit the amount of time we even have to go out hunting water?
Tumblr media
We have to ask ourselves how important primitive skills are instead of something like wrapping a sprain.
Water is always going to be a focus for me, but there are other skills, too.
Gather wood for the stove/grill and practice cooking and canning on it. Learn hauling and tying knots, and practice felling, branch removal, and topping on consecutively larger trees. Learn to change your own oil and bike chain. Figure out how to unclog a drain using supplies and tools you already have on hand. Walk on the ditch verges and wooded hills to strengthen ankles.
We have to ask ourselves how important primitive skills are instead of something like wrapping a sprain, turning off water and gas mains, producing and finding food, mending a fence, sharpening a blade, rescuing a drowning/choking infant or child, and backing a trailer.
Fire From Scratch
Tumblr media
If you happen to have a battery and steel wool, more power to you. It was never in my pack for fire tools.
Let’s start off with a super controversial one – yay!
First, I’m not talking about finding dry tinder in wet woods or making a feather stick. If somebody’s out in the woods regularly, the potential of injury in a downpour makes them worthwhile in the crisis stance. As a through packer (I think they call it ultralight now, but my bag was never light) and multi-day paddler, those are things that saved me time and energy for my hot meal.
I’m talking about Survivorman fire starting, primitive fire starting. If you happen to have a battery and steel wool, more power to you. It was never in my pack for fire tools.
Tumblr media
Second, if you’re a remote-creek kayaker, canoe trekker, or a hiker, get a few pill bottles to stuff with wet-weather or DIY-coated matches and a few cotton balls or some dryer lint, and start wearing one around your neck and carrying one in a pants pocket. Get a ferro rod and block or a windproof cigar lighter, and replace the chain with 550 cord to wear on your belt or pants button or the snap of your life vest or knife. Keep another set duct taped to the bottom of your water bottle or glasses case.
Tumblr media
No belt or knife? No glasses? Don’t worry about fire from scratch then. It takes a long time to master starting a fire with a bow and starting it with a lens requires a lens. If you don’t have a knife to make shavings and the bow and start the notch, there’s a stick and another stick, and you’d be far better served spending the time making a cocoon-style debris hut.
Matches/Lighters versus Primitive Skills
People do get lost in the woods, and eventually we absolutely will run out of matches and lighters on a homestead.
We’ll run out of them faster if we’re using smaller fires for short periods and thus starting them regularly. They can break, leak, get wet and grody, and strike-anywhere are harder and harder to find so you have to figure on the striker strips getting worn totally smooth, especially if we buy the big bulk boxes.
Learning to find tinder in wet woods is time-consuming enough (and worth it for some/many).
If you’re only bugging-out to a BOL, not in an INCH situation, or if you’re a boater, fisherman, hunter, hiker, or outdoors enthusiast, throw in a cigar lighter so wind is less of a factor – they fit in a Gerber case inside bags or small plastic bottles with matches and other fire-starting materials pretty well.
For a homestead/bug-in situation, we can say three meals and a snack a day, plus morning coffee. Starting five fires is pretty generous and buys time for us to learn how to bank a fire for coals and keep one going.
Say it takes us a couple broken/burn-out matches to get one started, so we need three matches per fire. Using 15 a day for a year gives us a total of 5.5K matches.
Tumblr media
Bricks of 100 small kitchen match boxes run $8-15 bucks each for 3.2K matches – two would cover our needs for $20-$30. My dollar store also carries match books cheaper (not my first choice).
Or we could buy one of those multi-pack bricks for $10-15, and hit Amazon for a 100-pack of disposable lighters for $20 and a set of three big boxes of 300 matches for $7-$10. That gives us 4K+ matches and 100 lighters for $37-45.
We can store them in our currently empty canning jars, or spend $5-6 at the dollar store to get candles or nail polish or lacquer to waterproof them and some baggies to keep them in. Strikers and blast matches, cigar lighters that work even in whipping Montana winds, run in the $4-$12 ranges.
Yes, it costs money. Yes, if you already have the knife, tromping into the woods to do it like Bear doesn’t.
Tromp into the woods learning to not make noise, recognize animal sign, and recognize landscape features that promise water instead.
There are multiple situations (and future practical, everyday skills) that benefit from that knowledge.
Soap – Making vs. Buying
Tumblr media
Let’s start with the basics of soap. There’s a couple of modern recipes, and a link to the history. About halfway down, that one breaks soap making into three stages of lye, fats, and combination – which is where we’d be at a total pioneer homestead or “My Side Of The Mountain forever” INCH lifestyle.
http://www.diynatural.com/how-to-make-soap-2/ – cups conversion
https://thenerdyfarmwife.com/how-to-make-soap-with-milk/ – one of many for milk, still need oil
http://spadet.com/soap-making-history-and-techniques/ – from scratch
I’m going to discount any soap making as viably sustainable if it’s using a fat or oil that’s not locally produced. That’s including people who buy the glycerin soap blocks. (For soap making – no comment on other uses.)
That’s the whole argument about sustainable, colonial and primitive skills – they’re for when there is no store and we run out of things.
If you need palm oil, you’re storing something and you might as well store the finished product. (There are exceptions, like the many balms and other uses for various oils.)
Some basic soap-making starter kits are available for as little as $10-15. Better will run as high as you like. I couldn’t find one that already included a scale (soap making is one of those things that requires weights according to some experts, although others have converted recipes to volume).
$10-15 for a kit isn’t much, absolutely. However, soap requires those rendered animal fats or oils. Those aren’t in the kits, and some of the ones I’ve seen in recipes are pretty pricey.
Tumblr media
Too, in a crisis, especially if we’re living off grass-fed livestock and wildlife and the diet food of garden produce, fats and oils are going to be precious to keep our bodies functioning.
There’s still tons of bar soaps available at the dollar store and <$1 at Walmart. Some are travel sized and singles in boxes. However, options are available in 2-packs and 3-packs of standard-sized bars. So for $10 I can get 18-27 bars of soap and still pay tax.
If I’m inclined, I can cut that down, get a bottle or two each of Dawn and pine cleaner for dishes and laundry, floors, and surfaces, and still get 14-18 bars of soap.
I once figured that between bathing and washing my hands and face, I run through a cake of soap a week, so I need more than $9-10 worth. I need more in the neighborhood of $20-$30, and about a shoebox of space. For laundry, surfaces and dishes for a year, and surface cleaning, depending on household, I need a couple of free liquor boxes and another $20-30 for liquid cleaners, even buying from the dollar store. (The dollar store is not the cheapest per ounce or most compact form, but they are incremental purchase and use sizes.)
Cost doesn’t apply for the folks who plan to have fatty pigs and cattle, and use their wood ash. For them, the comparison is strictly about time. For a lark, sure, jump one weekend. But weigh out what else could be learned, what other materials cost, and what family ties could be strengthened with a different activity.
Soap is compact. They are sensitive to dampness, so they need a Ziploc bag, lidded can, or plastic tub. There are environments where dry soaps melt, but most of North America could keep them in a shed. So will the ingredients for making soap, or finished homemade soaps.
Rendering suet for tallow
Tumblr media
Some will still think it’s worthwhile. To each their own, but please refer back to the general premise and Pat’s arc to be sure it’s the best use of your resources and time as you stand now.
On the flip side, totally learn how to make suet and tallow if fatty animals and materials are present. They have a ton of uses, provide a storable sustainable fat source, and they fill very real needs in a self-sustainable lifestyle.
Treating Hides
Hides and making useful items from hides is 50-50 with me. On one hand, I know a woman who makes a bundle from it, and if you have rabbits or hunt deer, you have hides. On the other hand, should the world collapse to colonial and pioneer day levels if not the Dark Ages, lots of humanity will die fast enough for me to find underroos, sheets, work boots, and socks should I need to go out past my X date – they aren’t exactly the things being grabbed in today’s riots.
Tumblr media
Photo from North American Bushcraft School
If it’s going to be a side business, sure, jump – after you do some market research. If it’s a niche market half-hobby, jump.
If it’s something on the to-do list because it seems like a great skill … maybe consider jumping on a maps website, finding farm fields and nearby specialty farms, making some non-nut cookies or muffins to carry, and sharing that you’re interested in breaking away from city life, would the nice farmer be willing to work out some kind of tag-along for labor deal so you can get a good idea of what’s involved.
Another option useful in disasters of all kinds is mapping power-line cuts to avoid traffic jams, snow and flood evacuation routes, and directions and A, B, C routes to and from kids’ schools and the school evac rally points.
Skills versus Stuff
Tumblr media
Nine times out of ten, I would argue that knowing is better than having. However, there are exceptions – usually because of the time and-or resources they require, and sometimes because of the space.
There are lots of things that we should know just to be well-round humans, let alone homesteaders or – if inclined – nomads. However, sometimes we waste our precious resources learning something that only benefits most people during a very specific type of disaster, or a total breakdown and reversal that lasts for 5-10+ years.
Sadly, a lot of people who push and learn those lack the skills and supplies to survive long enough for some primitive skills to become valuable again. Some of those skills come at the cost of things that can benefit us, right now.
There are all kinds of things to do without spending more money or spending time on something with highly specialized skills and low-likelihood needs.
I figure I’ll get hate mail for the concept and for the specific few I listed. I just want people to weigh their to-do and to-learn lists so that they can prioritize based on where they already stand and where they want to go.
If there’s true need and potential – and sometimes there is – or it’s just a hobby, there’s nothing wrong with any of the primitive skills. I think most of us, though, have something we would be better served learning, practicing or building than the three listed.

There are many pricey survival watches on the market. These watches are often equipped with a variety of bells and whistles that are designed to help the wearer make it through an emergency situation or help them navigate the backcountry. This latest model from Equipped Outdoors is very basic in design, but it’s also impressively durable and lightweight. The included compass is very accurate and can help those who know how to use a compass navigate through rural areas. The band of the watch is made out of paracord, which can be put to use by experienced survivalists. The watch also comes with an easy to use magnesium fire starter, so even beginners should have no trouble building a fire with some basic materials. Survival Watch Buyer’s Guide
For many, survival watches are one of the most impressive forms of wearable technology available. Because it offers many practical uses, in addition to specialized functions that can be relied on in extreme situations, the survival watch can provide the wear with a wealth of information that will aid in their survival. However, the key to choosing the right model will depend on how you will most likely use it and finding the best features that will meet those needs.
Before I dive into the must-have features to look for while you’re on your search for the right survival watch, let’s first learn more about the benefits it has to offer and what makes it a much better choice than a standard watch.
Benefits of Using a Survival Watch
Many survivalists believe that this style of watch is significantly better than a standard watch for a variety of reasons.
A survival watch is a better choice since it offers more functionality compared to a regular model. A basic watch will tell you what time it is and maybe offers more aesthetic appeal, however the survival watch can get you through an emergency situation.
These watches are perfect for anyone who wants to be prepared, those who love adventure, hunters, and people who spend plenty of time outdoors. These watches prove to be a better option over traditional watches since many basic watches are delicate and can easily become damaged.
Survival watches are more durable and rugged and have been specifically designed to survive harsh conditions. These watches are perfect for the survivalist, hiker, hunter, and explorer.
These watches are made out of high-quality materials. Many models are made out of aluminum, mineral glass, and stainless steel, all of which can protect the electronics, gear mechanisms and other important components inside the watch from external elements such as water, or even fire. Additionally, the face of these watches are often made out of durable material such as sapphire glass which is resistant to scratches. The bands of these watches are usually made out of superior materials as well and will not break as easily as a regular watch band.
A basic watch is not able to show you the direction you’re headed in, and can’t measure altitude, or measure air pressure. A survival watch can. These watches are often equipped with weather indicators, altimeters, barometers, and compasses.
The purpose of wearing one of these watches is to  be able to read important information quickly, as well as to know the time. While a basic watch will come equipped with built-in LEDs, the lights are usually not as bright as what you’ll find on a survival watch. These models have a higher contrast lighting that consists of powerful LEDs strategically placed in the back panel.
Additionally, the numbers, dials, and other figures on the watch face are usually made out of luminescent materials such as tritium, which provide an everlasting glow even in low-light conditions. This is a useful feature to have since it is a very low profile design that will not make you stand out in the dark.
Other Important Features
This type of watch is one that you’ll wear every single day. Unlike other types of survival gear, it will go wherever you go. Because of this, you need one that’s reliable and durable.
Time Telling Basics
One of the first features that you should look for is how the watch tells time. You’ll have your choice between analog or digital, in addition to standard 12-hour or military. You may even find some that offer a combination of the two.
Aside from displaying the time, these watches will have features that will come into play in a type of post-disaster situation. Models that come with a sunset and sunrise indicator will be invaluable since you may not be able to tell how much time has passed during a natural disaster. It will also help you keep track of the hours that go by in a crisis, how much time you have left to travel during daylight, how long to boil water, when you can check your traps, and more. When a disaster strikes time can be everything.
Durability
These watches are incredibly durable and designed to handle a variety of weather conditions. Additionally, some may have extra features that will work for special situations including high-impact activities, parachuting, and diving.
Watch Face and Casing
The face of the watch is often made out of a type of shatter resistant and scratch resistant material such as mineral crystal or sapphire. Stainless steel is also commonly used for the casing and bevel because of its natural rust resistance and overall durability.
Bands
The bands of these watches will also be available in a wide variety of styles such as steel, leather, rubber, and nylon. Often, the type of watch band material you choose will be a matter of personal preference.
Navigation
The different types of navigation features you’ll find will range in capability and accuracy. For a basic navigational system, you may just need a watch that comes equipped with compass points on a rotating ring. The simple setup will give you an idea of the general direction you’re heading in. Some models will also come with a button compass that’s been integrated into the watch band. Other models are techier and will have a digital compass display.
Some models are able to record elevation data. The altimeter will usually be displayed in real time. Keeping track of your elevation can come in handy in conjunction with topographical maps, since together, it can make it much easier for you to know if you’re headed on the right trail.
GPS
A watch that features digital GPS can provide more precise navigation allowing you to easily pinpoint where you are and where you’re headed. This will come in handy if you need to record or share your location coordinates, such as for locating a bug out camp, or for search-and-rescue purposes. For daily use, many survivalists recommend watches that have GPS since this feature is sufficient for those who spend a lot of time in remote areas.
Health Monitoring
If you want to keep a close eye on your health, then you need a model that comes equipped with a heart rate monitor. This feature will be perfect for fitness training; however, it does have survival use. Unless your bug-out bag has a stethoscope in it, having a watch with a heart rate monitor on it is the next best thing and it can be used when a member of your party becomes severely injured or sick. Keeping track of a person’s heart rate for conditions such as shock, loss of blood, or disease, can be lifesaving.
Types of Survival Watches
These watches will fall into one of two categories:
Technical
Paracord
Paracord models act as a mini survival kit located on your wrist. These watches have very similar features. Aside from telling time, they often also include a compass, whistle, and fire starter. The bands of the watches are made out of paracord.
Technical models work as miniature survival computers. These watches will include important features such as sunrise and sunset timers, altimeters, thermometers, barometers, GPS, and a compass.
In some cases, a survivalist will wear a paracord bracelet, and use a technical tactical watch instead. This allows the wearer to enjoy the best of both worlds, especially if they have a bug out bag that includes many of the same features that are included in a standard passcode watch such as a fire starter, whistle, or compass. The type of watch you choose should be dependent on what features you are looking for, and which ones you feel you would rely on the most in an emergency situation.
Luminescent Digits or Hands
Being able to read your watch in the dark will be essential, especially if you want to be able to view the face of the watch without having to use one of your hands to click on the backlight button. Because of this, I recommend choosing a model that comes with luminescent hands or digits, since this will make reading the time much simpler.
Pressure and Water-Resistant
ATMs are pressures of units that represent the level of pressure a watch is able to handle. A model with a 3 ATM rating is able to endure pressure that’s equivalent to the type of pressure that exists under approximately 100 feet of water. Keep in mind that an ATM rating is not the same as measure of depth. I recommend purchasing a model that has an ATM rating of at least 3.
Analog or Digital
Many survivalists recommend going with an analog watch over a digital. While digital watches often offer more sophisticated functions and are extremely accurate, many survivalists and hikers claim that analog watches are more reliable. Ultimately, the type of watch you choose will be a matter of personal preference, however if you’re looking for a more feature-packed model then you’ll want to go with digital. For some, the simple visual sight of the hands moving around the face can help them have a better grasp on time. It can also help when it comes to better understanding the pace that needs to be kept when doing a specific task in order to meet certain goals.
Warranty
Leading models will often come with a one to five-year warranty. A warranty for this type of important investment is a must, since these watches are designed with superior durability and should last significantly longer than a standard watch. Lower priced models may only come with a warranty that covers against defects and provides six to twelve months of coverage. Higher priced models will offer the best and most coverage, so buyer’s can feel more confident in this type of important purchase, knowing the manufacturers stand behind their products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Soldiers Wear their Watches Backward?
One of the main reasons a soldier will wear their watch backward is because the crystal face of the watch can reflect light. To prevent this a soldier will wear their watch inverted.
Is it okay to Wear a Watch on Your Right Hand?
It is, if you’re left-handed. The general rule concerning which wrist to wear your watch on depends on which hand is your dominant hand. Always wear your watch on your non-dominant hand. This will make it easier to read your watch.
Is it Bad to Sleep with Your Watch on?
Sleep studies have shown that it’s bad to sleep wearing a watch since people tend to constantly check the time when they’re in bed, especially if they’re having a hard time falling asleep. Looking at the time frequently can make the wearer feel anxious and pressured to fall asleep as soon as possible. One study showed that people who slept with their watch on got less REM sleep compared to people who didn’t sleep wearing their watch.
Is it Okay to Wind a Watch Backward?
No. The mechanisms in a watch are not designed to be wound backward. While doing so will not cause immediate damage to your watch, over time, it will place unnecessary wear and stress on the gears, which can significantly cut down the lifespan of your watch.
Is it Bad to let a Mechanical Watch Stop?
No. It’s perfectly safe to allow your watch to wind down, this simply means that the mainspring is fully unwound. Of course, allowing your watch to wind down means it will not accurately show the time the next time you wind it back up, so you’ll need to reset it.
Final Thoughts
The best survival watch will be one that you know how to use, one that comes loaded with the types of features you can rely on in an emergency situation, and a model that’s waterproof, durable, and designed to last. This buyer’s guide, in addition to the models that made it onto my top 6 list, will help you choose the perfect watch that can protect you and help guide you in the event of a natural disaster or other type of emergency situation. Equipped Outdoors Survival Watch
Our Rating: (4/5)
The watch is covered by a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty, which is pretty surprising, considering the low cost of this model.
Pros
Tough paracord watch band
Compass
Includes magnesium fire starter
Lifetime manufacturer warranty
Cons
Battery does not last long
Watch face is difficult to read in low light conditions
Conclusion
Despite its low price, this model comes with a lifetime manufacturer warranty, which is impressive. The lightweight design and basic features make this model comfortable to wear and easy to use. Unfortunately, seeing the watch face clearly can be very difficult in low light conditions. Additionally, there have been many reports that the included battery does not last very long and may need to be replaced after just a month or two of use. Overall, for the price, this model is a great buy for anyone in need of a lightweight, handy watch to use on their next backcountry adventure, or daily use. However, I recommend upgrading the included battery as soon as possible.

Each of the six models that made it onto my last all earned a higher user rating for their durable design, reliability, and their many important features that a survivalist or hiker can rely on in an emergency situation. Remember, when you’re shopping for a survival watch, you always want to go with a model that comes with features that you know you will use and can rely on, whether you’re hiking through the backcountry, dealing with a natural disaster, or you simply need to bug out.

A 2000hp steel-body 1967 Mustang Fastback Built for Grudge Racing
Southern eighth-mile grudge-match staging lanes are often filled with LX Mustangs, G-bodies, second–generation Novas, and fourth–generation Camaros. They’re inexpensive and feature tons of room for performance upgrades. Buried in those lanes, you may discover this gem: an original 1967 Mustang Fastback. It’s a steel-bodied car with immaculate paint and stellar craftsmanship designed to turn heads and blow the tires off the competition—and it doesn’t have a LS under the hood.
Powered by a 600ci big-block Ford, it made 1,800 hp at 7,900 rpm to the 275 tires, on what the owner calls the mild tune. It only took nine months to complete and has a best eighth-mile pass of 4.70 e.t. at 150 mph. Owned by Chris Cantrell of Anderson, South Carolina, it’s currently maintained by Stallion Autosports in Greenville, South Carolina.
The car was completed in January 2018 after only nine months under the knife. While it’s street-legal, the car has mostly seen eighth-mile tracks, with a best e.t. of 4.70 at 150 mph.
To build a street-driven 1,800hp Mustang, you don’t need just money, you need a team. It’s important to have friends who share your dream and passion. For the large group of friends that make up All Business Racing, they had enough of the formula to make it happen.
It all began—as any good project does—with the group of friends bench-racing. Member Jeremy Pearson purchased a mint 1969 Camaro, and the guys talked about building an equally nice Ford. But the “body–shop jail,” as it was coined by the crew, usually slows down a project so much that it kills the fun. Fellow member and fabricator Craig Owens had the bright idea to buy a finished car and rebuild it. They decided to buy Jeremy’s brother’s beautiful pro-touring Fastback Mustang. The car featured a custom-built 408ci stroker, a five-speed, nine-inch rear axle, and a complete Total Control Product suspension package. But more importantly, it had finished paint.
The group of friends that make up All Business Racing set out to build a high-quality, grudge-match Ford for facilities like Atlanta and Charlotte dragstrips. The car debuted at the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, running in the Radial vs. the World Class.
“Within 24 hours, we had the car stripped down to nothing more than a roof and two quarter–panels,” said Jonathan Bridwell, friend and owner of Stallion Autosport. “Everyone thought we lost our minds when we told them we were cutting it up.”
Craig and Jeremy, of JP Automotive, built the double framerail chassis and SFI 25.5–certified rollcage. Allen Pittman of AP Race Cars in Greenville, South Carolina, did the custom carbon–fiber floorboards, and Got-U–Covered built the headliner and dashpad.
The Mustang is fast, but not yet consistent. The nitrous formula allows the team to dial it in as track conditions change. “When to bring the nitrous in, and how much- that’s the learning curve,” said owner Chris.
In order to keep this freshly–painted car in good condition, the team covered everything with 3M Welding and Spark Deflection Paper. “We built the entire chrome–moly chassis between the factory rockers and never put a scratch on the car,” said Jonathan. “It was a lot faster than we could have sent the body out for bodywork and paint.”
Chris owns a few different race cars, including a four-speed, straight–axle gasser, but this one was intended to be different. We were able to achieve it without manipulating the body,” he said. All the glass is factory, the bumpers original, and even the stainless–steel trim remains. “We emphasized on keeping the body as correct as possible.”
From the front, there are only a couple giveaways to the car’s true potential: Weld Racing spindle-mount wheels, header collectors extruding from the fenders, and the drag radials hidden between factory quarter-panels.
The jewel of the build is the monster big-block Ford built by C&R Machine Shop with a C&C Motorsports Boss 429/427 aluminum, six-bolt-main block that’s been punched out to 600 ci. It features Oliver Racing Parts rods and Diamond Racing pistons. Topping off the short–block are Kaase Boss 9 heads that were ported by C&R Machine Shop. A custom-built COMP solid–roller camshaft and T&D rocker arms round out the valvetrain.
The engine alone makes more than 1,100 hp, but that doubles when you add the nitrous. The system consists of two custom-built nitrous fogger systems. Hogan’s Racing Manifolds in Mooresville, North Carolina, built a custom aluminum intake, and the team assisted in developing the two foggers with Dave Basher of Nitrous Outlet. Dave then flow–tested the intake to calibrate a true 550 shot from each system. The magical 1,800hp dyno run featured two shots of nitrous pulled back to around a 300 shot each.
The Mustang rides on Weld Racing V-series two-piece billet wheels measuring 17×4 inches up front, and the 15×12 inch rears are wrapped in Mickey Thompson 275/60/15. While the carbon-fiber wheeltubs and narrowed framerails will allow for a pair of 315-wide tires, the team only plans to run the smaller 275 tires.
A MagnaFuel 750 fuel pump supplies fuel to Holley injectors and an Accufab 105mm throttle–body. Despite the over-the-top nitrous system, there’s no separate nitrous controller—everything is run on a single Holley Dominator ECU. The big-block is backed by a TH400 two-speed custom–built by TCS Products. It features a transbrake and a B&M Pro Bandit shifter.
Chris’s days of driving his four-speed gasser have spoiled him. What’s it like to drive the Mustang? “To be honest, it’s awfully boring to drive,” he said, with a laugh. “It’s such a smooth–driving and fun car, but once you get used to racing a low-5-second, four-speed, straight-axle gasser, you have to go really fast in an automatic car to get exciting.”
It’s occasionally street-driven, but with 15.5:1 compression you won’t see it at the local 7-Eleven gas station. The engine runs on VP Racing Fuel C16 or the Renegade Nitrous Pro 120+; both are leaded race fuels that feature 120 octane ratings and are designed for nitrous applications.
You may have already guessed the team’s biggest problem with the combination of big power and small tires on eighth-mile tracks: traction, or lack thereof. Blowing the tires off the car is common, but “if we can get the car to 200 feet, it’ll go straight every time,” said Chris. “We can show up at any track and can get consistent within a few hits, but getting it to go down every surface consistently—that’s the real challenge.” The huge amounts of nitrous allows the team plenty of room to dial in the car on any given run.
As the crew dials in the car for consistency, they’re still scheming about the future, making plans to attend HOT ROD Drag Week, competing in the Unlimited Class. The plan is to drop the compression and cubes to 10:1 and 500 ci and compensate with turbos. They’re also considering the construction of two separate injector systems: one for pump gas and the other methanol. Craig, the lead fabricator who had the idea for the build, lost his life in a severe drag-racing accident in 2016 and never saw the Mustang race. “Craig was extremely talented, and we miss him very much. Anytime we have the car out, we are always racing in his honor,” said Jonathan. We hope, they are able to attend Drag Week, honoring their friend on every pass.
Nitrous Outlet helped the team bench-flow the 1100hp worth of nitrous through the custom-built Hogan’s Racing Manifolds. It’s a custom-designed dual-fogger system worth two 550hp shots of nitrous.
The Kaase Boss Nine cylinder heads are topped with Kaase valve covers. The headers are custom-built by JP Headers with 2 1/4-inch primaries and high-temp coating.
The front suspension consists of a Strange Engineering Aluminum Strut package. Strong and lightweight, the system was designed specifically for drag racing, with the spindle cast into the bottom of the strut. The kit includes Strange Engineering hubs, springs, 11.25-inch rotors, four-piston calipers, and lower control arms.

The kit includes Strange Engineering hubs, springs, 11.25-inch rotors, four-piston calipers, and lower control arms.
Although it was built as a grudge-match car, it’s legit with a NHRA 6.50–certified rollcage.
A 7.5-inch Holley Digital Dash sits behind a RJ Racecars Max Lightweight steering wheel. A Halon fire suppression system keeps the driver safe in the event of a fire.
A Holley Dominator runs everything on the car, even traction control.
The car’s two 15-pound nitrous bottles are refilled after every pass, as it consumes roughly 10 pounds of nitrous on a single eighth-mile pass. The 600ci Ford has never been on an engine dyno outside of the car, but it’s estimated to make about 2,070 hp.
This build started with a completely restored, show-quality Mustang that was then built into this monstrous drag racer. “We cut that car up,” said Chris. “From rocker to rocker, bumper to bumper. It was [a] tedious and nerve-racking process.”
