There has always been a little extra light in his eyes when she’s around; like the sun itself was shining right into his eyes, but rather than blind it only illuminates. She doesn’t smile as much as she should ( a consequence of the world she’s grown up in ) but when she does, he swears his entire world could stop.

It reminds him there are still some things in the world worth doing this shitty job for, and if she can still smile despite everything she’s been through, he can manage it once in a while. 

“Thanks, Mandy.” An arm extends out to pull her into a shameless hug, kiss settling to her forehead before both arms close in around her in an embrace. “I’m glad you’re here, kid. You’ve got no idea.”

he’s come to associate junior mints and chinese food with her.

it feels a bit like clockwork, especially on the rougher cases. stone has no real place among them and he drifts, caught between asking how he can help or wondering if he’d be better suited merely leaving.

rollins calls him and the storm seems to part.

now it is a ritual and this time he comes prepared, observant of the fact she seems to favor spiced beef or chicken and ends up buying both before coming to the station. wordlessly he places it on the desk and sinks into the chair beside her, setting aside the chopsticks and focused instead on the task of opening up several boxes.

It happens so quickly; one minute Sonny is in the living room with their youngest and the next he’s calling out Amanda’s name and rushing to join her in the bathroom. Jesse’s bathtime is interrupted by her father absolutely beaming --- excitement radiating from him as he bounces her sister in his arms. “ --- ‘Manda, she said it! I swear, I heard her, she said it --- didn’t you, G? Can you show her? Can you say ‘daddy’ again? Say ‘daddy.’ Da-ddy.” Sure enough, the baby repeats the sounds and Sonny? Lord, but he seems to be over the moon.

"I can’t believe it. I mean, she’s had ‘mommy’ down forever but, wow.” At the sound, Grazi switches her tune and begins a chorus of babbled ‘mommy’s --- though it doesn’t seem to snuff out Sonny’s fatherly pride.
