What is a narcissist?
What characterizes a narcissist? I've encountered this term frequently, not because my friends or colleagues have applied it to me, but rather due to my older sister's frequent use of it. She appears to believe that I fit this description. To diagnose someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), five out of the nine criteria from the DSM-IV-TR are necessary. Some of the traits associated with NPD include a heightened sense of self-importance, preoccupation with fantasies of power, wealth, success, and love, a constant need for admiration, a belief in one's uniqueness, a lack of empathy, arrogance, entitlement, a preference for associating only with important or special individuals, and a tendency to exploit others for personal gain.
It's crucial to distinguish between narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder. Narcissism refers to certain exhibited traits in a person, where they don't meet enough criteria to be categorized as having NPD.
Allow me to elaborate on the fact that most of us possess elements of personality disorders to some degree. For instance, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most commonly discussed ones. Each of us experiences varying levels of OCD tendencies. Similarly, anxiety and periods of depression are universal; the key lies in the extent to which these disorders disrupt our daily functioning.
This principle applies to both narcissism and NPD. Celebrating our achievements occasionally and taking pride in reaching goals are healthy behaviors. There's no issue with that. Therefore, if someone labels you as a narcissist or suggests you have OCD, don't be overly concerned. More often than not, they might be projecting their own emotions onto you. Give them space to express themselves, and eventually, the genuine truth will emerge.
Examples and Anecdotes: Imagine a coworker who consistently seeks praise for their achievements and often downplays the accomplishments of others. While this behavior might seem narcissistic, it doesn't necessarily meet the criteria for NPD. On the other hand, someone with NPD might manipulate their colleagues into doing their work for them, exploiting their desire to please for personal gain.
Treatment and Coping Strategies: For those dealing with narcissism or NPD, seeking professional help from therapists or counselors is a crucial step. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic approaches can be effective in addressing the underlying issues and promoting healthier behaviors. Developing empathy, self-awareness, and coping strategies are integral parts of the recovery process. For friends and family, setting boundaries and encouraging open communication can help manage interactions with individuals exhibiting narcissistic traits. Remember that change takes time and dedication, but it's possible with the right support and commitment.

How Do Successful People Think Differently?
I teach people stop selling your hours. I teach people learn how to learn better, right? Have you heard, you know, if I had 10 hours to cut down a tree, I'd spend one hour cutting down the tree and 10 hours sharpening my axe. Maybe the other way around. Right, 10 hours. I'd sharpen my axe for nine hours and I'd spend one hour cutting down the tree, right? And that's really what I feel life boils down to is that you have to really spend more time thinking, doing the heavy lifting, sharpening those tools.
How do I accelerate? How do I accelerate my learning? How do I accelerate the process where I can take information in and work with efficiency to maximize the things that I can be great at and not worry about all that other stuff. And when you do that, people don't even notice. People don't even notice that you have a learning disability, people don't even notice your shortcomings because they're like holy men. Look at this guy.
He's incredible at this thing. And really you might not be incredible at that thing, but you might have just worked a little harder than the last guy, who they think is incredible. You might have thought a little differently about things and when we look at people, you look at people like Elon Musk, he's got a learning disability allegedly. One of the smartest guys, richest man in the world right now as we record this. How is that possible?
The guy sleeps on the floor of the factory, he does not give a you know what? Look at Jeff Bezos. He had bricks set up in his office and a piece of wood and a spray painted sign behind him that said Amazon. And he worked ceaselessly, endlessly and getting to where he was. Look at Steve Jobs. The same thing Steve Jobs, you know, people will disagree with this wasn't the nicest of people from all counts, especially from Walter Isaacson's biography of him, but what they did do is they learned how to think differently and how to learn differently.

Is Minimalism For The Rich?
No, people look at me all the time and they're like, man, you're a millionaire. You got all this stuff, house, cars, all this stuff. They're like what about that you know, are you going to upgrade that thing? I'm like, no. There's nothing wrong with it. I'm like, I'm going to take it and I'm going to fix it. I've I replaced batteries and things that you shouldn't replace batteries. And I've got a soldering kit. I fix just because I believe that objects have a spirit to them, not in a woo-woo sense but I believe everything has a utility and I think there's they're like to your point, there's great value in being able to fix something and to reuse it.
The fact is that we're constantly accustomed to dopamine release now with social media with tick-tock with Instagram with all the stuff we're constantly getting dopamine hits. What's that do to our brain? It changes the way that our neurons are firing in our brain. So if you have a book that you haven't read and it's hanging around and every day you're looking at that book cover, you're doing yourself a disservice. Cover any books until you're ready to read them. I'll tell you this now with a white cover or a blank cover. Why?
Because your brain every day that's looking at that cover is becoming less and less interested in it. Why? Because novelty. Our brains adapted through evolution to seek novelty. And when we don't have that novelty, it's no longer interesting to us. So what do I do? Rather than upgrading my cell phone, my mobile phone, I upgrade my mobile phone case as much as possible. I've got five or six different colors of mobile phone cases.
Every time I flip them out and I don't give a about that kind of stuff. I'm not a teenager who's like, oh look at this fashionable case. But the fact is that every time I swap the case out, I look at this object that I'm looking at every day and I'm like oh man, it feels like a new thing. Yeah. And you can do that similarly with other things in your life. So sometimes you don't need to throw things away. so I would agree with you wholly there. Okay, that was fun. Mastery Is Achieved Through Deliberate Practice
You have to have repetition which means that you have to create mastery on whatever that you're doing. And so people that for example, I see comedians all the time. They're just like okay man, I'm going to go to an open mic once a week. But they never rehearse in between there, so they're getting like four minutes of rehearsal every week like, if you add that up that's you know, an hour rehearsal year. Seth Meyers went to Amsterdam and he had two hours or three hours a night for two years in a row. So what Malcolm Gladwell says, is when you get like five to..
I think it's five thousand hours, is that what he said. Five thousand of ten times in person repetition. Is that right? Ten thousand hours. Ten thousand hours, okay, yeah yeah ten thousand hours. I was like, how do you do that? I mean you got to start as as a hockey player when you're like five to get those 10000 hours. Yeah, I look back at my career and I've had about 4000 hours on radio, television and stage all combined in my 30 years of professional experience, right?
I'm not even at 10000. But think about somebody who's like, I want to start a podcast, I want to do a comedy, I've been on three podcasts. That's like two hours dude, you need five, six, seven thousand hours to be able to adapt in this live circumstance. So what I found is like, if you can get that incubation period, get an internship, get a mentorship, work for free for a couple years around the people that you love, it may not pay now but it pays off later in relationships.

Offer Authentic Brands To Connect With Your Customers
I was taught by my teacher that everything has a spirit, the very taoist principle. Like a rock has a spirit, right? It's hard, it's cold, it's unmovable, a stone you know, boulder. Steel has a spirit, right? It's hard, it's impenetrable. Products and brands and businesses and people also have a spirit. There's a feeling to them and if you don't shy away from what your nature is, if you don't shy away from what the nature of the product is what you're calling brand, then you come into a place where you're your true self. And if you can own that, if you can own that authenticity which is what we're talking about that truth, then you control the narrative in a way that nobody else can. Because there's a lot of out there and your product your service isn't going to be perfect for everybody.
When people lose, is when they go oh, I've got this thing and people are like yeah, it's not really that thing. You're like oh okay, well, then it's this other thing and it's this other thing and they're like, you talking about it's none of those things, this is you're lying to me, right? And they bail but when you see somebody who's authentic like, I love personal development and the thing that I love most is when I see somebody who's authentic. It's just so refreshing you know. Sometimes you meet somebody, maybe they're an and they're like you know, they're a little rough around the edges. They curse.
They do a few things that you might not personally do, but they're real. Yeah and it's like oh, thank God. Let's go sit down and have a drink. Let's have a coffee. Let me get to know you because I know that maybe you're not likable, maybe you're not affable but that man you're real. Yeah, you've come into who you are and there is power in that and similarly with products and brands. There's an intuitive realization of what the spirit of that thing is. What the spirit of that business is and if you can learn how to find that, the world's your oyster.

Do You Have A Plan B?
You know what what I would tell anyone and what I do. I speak a lot to students and and what I tell them on the front end is you know regardless of how well you do, how good you are. How successful you are. It's a million percent. There's going to be losses along the way. So I think going into fighting, going into any sort of life or business, just that awareness of all right, I'm going to do the work, I'm going to train, going to prepare, I'm going to develop the confidence, but I do know that I could lose.
I I don't I don't believe I don't practice the philosophy of not pretending that there is a possible bad outcome like I know there's there could be a bad outcome. I could die like I could literally die, so I'm very honest with that. Um...similarly in business, I don't I don't burn the ships. I do have a plan B. I just never look at it. I put in the closet. I haven't thought about it for years. Same thing with a fight like I'm very aware of the fact that hey, I could lose. I know I could lose but, I'm not. It's in my back pocket. It's not even in my consciousness but as part of the preparation, I do reckon with that fact.

Thinking Out Of The Box Or Crushing The Box?
This is a series on how to hack and grow rich, make money online and how to overcome life and business/career issues.
▶ Video Transcript: I was 15 years old thinking I want to find wealth, fortune all the great things that America offers. Books were my friends. I read books by Napoleon Hill, books by Og Mandino, all the great old-time writers of that time. I read Tony Robbins and Wayne Dyer and all the personal development guys. This other guy named Stuart Wilde. I read his books and I thought, man, you know what? I'm I'm gonna leave home and I left home. I left and I was sleeping at that time in abandoned buildings or buildings that were under construction. Los Angeles was in a huge building boom at that time.
So I realized that I could get into these buildings late at night when the brokers weren't in there, wake up in the morning before they got there and I'd be out and I'd be living in luxury houses, maybe there wasn't electricity or water in those days in some of the places because they weren't built yet but it was a safe place to lay my head and subsequent to that I realized that there was a big electronic music scene. I had found a mentor, a guy who had agreed to take me under his wing and he was very familiar with the electronic music scene, the rave scene, the dance scene. So I got involved in that. I started throwing some clubs to make a little bit of extra money. I was still sleeping wherever I could lay my head and I remember that I would sleep behind the speakers, most people don't know this. In front of speakers, very loud, very hard to sleep. Behind speakers, super quiet and very warm. So I would sleep behind the speakers. I would wake up the club, would still be going on and I started looking around thinking how is the money being made in these places to realize only that it was by the drug dealers.
