“I can’t sleep,” Alfred murmurs and Francis snorts quietly; as if Alfred has to explain himself. He watches out of the corner of his eye as the Boy King bends over a pile of documents, picking them up and laying them down again in different piles, eyes flitting back and forth. His hand doesn’t rest on his knife around Francis anymore and Francis wonders how it would feel to make Alfred bleed. Fear has made way for indifference and it builds in Francis’ chest like the hymns they used to sing in his name, rising and turning sour in his throat.

As if Alfred can sense Francis’ aggravation he glances over, hand hovering over a document.

“What were you the God of?”

Francis’ wants to strangle him, wants to tear mountains down at their foundations and leave gaping wounds in the soft earth. A year has passed since he was last addressed and the relief is enough to make him see red because he is more than this.

They were more than this.

“What do you think?”

Perhaps the way his voice comes out scratchy and distorted covers up the underlying threat; perhaps Alfred is just plain stupid. He takes the bait.

“My mother used to say you were the God of love.”

Francis’ eyes narrow, and he smiles softly. “Your mother was wrong just as much as she is dead. Love is love, there needs be no God to covet it and share it equally among you humans, you do a brilliant job at messing that one up yourselves.” Alfred opens his mouth to protest and Francis’ continues, fingers twitching against his bonds. “You simplify everything. I am the God of desire and familiar wrath. I am the ache, I am a loving bruise, I am want. You see Alfred, Boy King, I love often and much but I do not enjoy it - and do not think for one second that means my wrath is less terrifying.”

There it is again, the fear. Francis drinks it in like a parched man in the desert because fear means acknowledgement and that was always his flaw - his desires are for himself as much as his people. He is the God of vanity, of hatred, of giving and taking.

Love is such a mundane word for what he is.

“I shouldn’t talk to you,” Alfred mutters and grabs the document he was hovering over earlier, turning away.

“You’ll pray to me when I get my hands around your neck, Boy King.”

“You are beautiful, for a human.” Francis licks his bloodied lips and revels in the nasty look Alfred sends him. The Boy King is beautiful, there’s no point in lying, and Francis is growing tired of playing games.

“I ordered you not to speak,” Alfred slowly says and Francis rolls his eyes.

“You can chain me to a wall and show your people that the Old Gods are as good as dead, but you really can’t shut me up. I can tell you that right now, boy.”

“I’ll have your tongue cut out.”

“And I will have my tongue remade.” Alfred frowns at him and Francis once again is struck by how he is the perfect example of human beauty. It is easy to see why he is a well loved King because he looks like he should be one. Broad shoulders, clear blue eyes and a way of holding himself that Francis recognises from Kings of old. He probably blesses babies and fights alongside his men, Francis thinks and he is suddenly so weary of the world.

“You don’t seem very godlike.” The tone is hostile but there’s curiosity there as well. Francis tilts his head and blinks, gathering what little remains of his shredded power. He fixes it onto Alfred, the strange boy who renounced him and nailed him to a cross for the sake of his people.

Alfred stands up with one hand on his sword. “Stop.” The air charges with heavy static and Francis groans when the chains start to burn him, squeezing out every last drop of his power to make the castle shake in its foundation before the magic does what its designed to.

“I said stop!”

Shoulders sagging and breath heaving; Francis smirks at Alfred. “Never forget what I am, Boy King. Never forget what you chained to this wall, cast out and renounced.”

Alfred pales and there is satisfaction in that. Time will come for him, as it does for all.

yes i agree + love us/france it truly doesn't get enough attention esp for those of us who prefer bottom france. like i enjoy bottom america in some ships and but alfie and fran are so hubby and wifey to me. they're so like. idealistic 1950s couple. also the milfy cougar + himbo boytoy potential is off the charts... gghgngmhnfhgh

i honestly think it's such a healthy relationship and they are so sweet together!! always sappy and annoying and indulging in PDA. sure they might bicker a lil but it's nothing like the fights between arthur and fran or arthur and alfred for that matter. sorry old man but i can see arthur finding them irritating AF by how in loooove they are. it's definitely a fluffy comfort ship <3
