Living Abroad!
Was talking to a childhood friend today, by going abroad he said “you have missed so much of yourself and your past by moving to Europe”
I asked myself is that really true? Do we miss our old selves, the roads we roamed, the cities we have called home? Or the reason you don't live there anymore is that you have found better cities to build new stories, create new memories, and new streets to roam and wonder?
This took me back a little. I don’t know how one explain or answer that?

When American Band Kids Go to Europe
Ok so this didn't happen to me but it was funny enough that I thought I should share. So a few years ago my band director took a group of band kids to a trip to Europe, and while they were in London July 4th rolled around. Long story short they had to get special permission from the Queen to play The Star Spangled Banner. So here you have a group of American band kids playing the US national anthem in the courtyard of the Queen's castle, no joke. Apparently as they played Londoners were going by saying "Happy treason day." I just- I don't know why that's so funny to me. I just- I love it.

American Experience of Italy
The International Studies Abroad program that I’ve joined here in Rome is somewhat relaxed, but at the same time I have learned so much about the world outside of the United States. Our program coordinators are locals that have lived in Rome their whole lives, and have been able to show us the ins and outs of the city. By doing so, the rest of my group, which consists of Americans from all around the country and I have had a crash course in what it is like to live and study abroad. It has been a perspective altering experience to say the least. The main objective of the program is to take in as much of Italy as possible within our short time here, as well to study under some extremely bright Italian minds at the American University of Rome.
My Professors include Carl Haber, a film writer, producer and director who has made most of his films outside of the United States, and Dr. Sabrina Marchetti, who specializes in migration studies. It has been a great experience not inly learning about their respective fields, but also about their unique knowledge of Rome and Italy itself. Professor Haber has been especially helpful in helping to understand Italian perspectives of Americans, as he of course is an American himself who has lived and worked in Italy for years. Dr. Marchetti, who works across multiple countries and cultures has also been able to give great insight into European perspectives as a whole, and especially the history of modern Italian culture and the way it has been changed over the years, with the influence of different ethnic groups, such as the Romani people, also known as Gypsies, Moroccans and other north Africans, as well as people from across the Adriatic sea, like Croatia, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The mix of an Italian perspective with the perspective of an American living in Italy is invaluable to my experience here in Italy. Both of my professors have unique understandings of Italy and Italians that have helped my classmates and I to understand and respect Italian culture.
Visiting the Coliseum and the ancient Roman Forum were my first sightseeing trips, and I found them absolutely fascinating. Having been obsessed with ancient Rome since childhood, it felt almost like a pilgrimage to visit such a magnificent structure, and even being able to go inside and walk on the same ground as the Emperors once did, ages ago. It is truly incredible to me the way that modern Rome seems to be essentially built on top of the ancient city. Ancient walls and buildings still stand right next to modern ones, and the infrastructure doesn’t seem to have changed very much at all, though that may be an illusion. Getting around the city has been a challenge, but Rome has a very good public transportation system, that I have been able to pick up on for the most part.
My next excursion was to the city of Florence, which was the central city in the Renaissance. Florence, in my opinion had even more to offer than Rome. Home to Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Medici and so many other larger than life figures I was absolutely astounded. The architecture alone in Florence was mind-blowing compared to what I have seen in the United States, and the art was too incredible to describe. Michelangelo’s David, and the Mural In the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower, depicting Dante’s Inferno and some of the levels of Heaven, was breathtaking as well as extremely telling of the culture during that time. Florence, as well as Rome also has a thriving nightlife, which was also very enjoyable, as well as surprisingly similar to that in the United States. The only thing that I can say I would change about the next time I come to Italy, is that I would want to see even more of this incredible place.
