“A Pearl Harbor Anniversary” 80 Years Ago, Today – (Monday) December 7th, 1942: In the Pacific, 204 miles southwest of Iwo Jima, which at this time is still deep in Japanese territory, the US Navy can still strike the Japanese. The submarine USS Kingfish (SS-234, Gato-Class, Photo 1), closes in on the Japanese cargo ship “Hino Maru No. 3.” (No Photo) The torpedoes cause the ship to erupt in flames hundreds of feet high. Kingfish’s crewmen take turns watching the inferno through the periscope, no doubt relishing their victory one year to the day that the Japanese had shattered the Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Hino Maru No. 3 goes to the sea floor, taking 19 men with her. 26 others survive, and are rescued. ** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: 1, history.navy.mil #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #usskingfish #gatoclass #americansubmarine #usnavy #unitedstatesnavy #pacificfleet #pearlharboranniversary #december7th #decemberseventh #silentservice #subpac #torpedoattack #tinfish #imperialjapanesenavy (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl39EfWA5Yr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The original-style, American submarine: tastes better with olive oil and vinegar instead of mayonnaise. #submarine #americansubmarine #submarinesandich @dons_restaurant (at Lebanon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSerMDhoKHj/?utm_medium=tumblr

“On Eternal Patrol - USS Triton (SS-210)” Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Monday) March 15th, 1943 – In the Pacific, the American submarine USS Triton (SS-210, Tambor-Class) is on her 6th War Patrol in the northern Solomon Islands archipelago. In service since 1940, she’s a great boat with a good crew. Since the war started, she’s served from Alaska to the coasts of China and Japan through to the South Pacific. Thus far, she’s accounted for no less than 16 Japanese ships sunk, totaling some 64,600 tons, and damaged another four. On March 13th, she’s alerted that threw Japanese destroyers are in her area. On the 15th, they find Triton, attack with depth charges… and sink her. Oil slicks, cork, and debris with American markings float to the surface. The attack is heard by the nearby American submarine USS Trigger (SS-237, Gato-Class). Triton was lost with All Hands. Her entire crew – 74 Officers and Men – remain entombed in her hull on the floor of the Pacific. The Boat, and her men, remain On Eternal Patrol. Today, we offer our deepest reverence to the US Navy Sailors and the USS Triton who we lost eighty years ago, today. You Are Not Forgotten. 🇺🇸🇺🇸**Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2**🇺🇸🇺🇸 Photo: PubDom #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #usstriton #triton #pacificfleet #pacificwar #pacifictheater #taborclass #americansubmarine #ussubmarine #usnavy #silentservice #eternalpatrol #oneternalpatrol #theyshallnotdietwice #neverforgotten #honorthefallen (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0jcaVgu6G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“On Eternal Patrol - USS Grampus (SS-207)” Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Friday) March 5th, 1943 – In the Pacific, the American submarine USS Grampus (SS-207, Tambor-Class) is on patrol somewhere in vicinity of the New Georgia Islands group on the western side of the Solomon Islands archipelago. Inexplicably, she vanishes without a trace. The most plausible explanation is an attack from the Japanese Navy. A pair of Japanetwrbakese destroyers, the “Minegumo”and the “Murasame” reported an attack near Kolombangara island, which resulted with an oil slick. This could have been the end of Grampus, but both ships were sunk by US Navy cruisers the following day (we’ll cover that tomorrow), leading to a loss of the ships’ logs and records. We’ll never know for sure, as Grampus’ wreck has never been found. Grampus was lost with All Hands. Her entire crew – 71 Officers and Men – remain entombed in her hull on the floor of the Pacific. The Boat, and her men, remain On Eternal Patrol. Today, we offer our deepest reverence to the US Navy Sailors and the USS Grampus who we lost eighty years ago, today. “On Eternal Patrol – The USS Amberjack” Eighty Years Ago, Today – (Tuesday) February 16th, 1943, off New Guinea, in the South Pacific: A half a world away from the carnage in the Atlantic, we suffer a grave loss in the Pacific, as well. The American submarine USS Amberjack (SS-219, Gato-Class) has been operating in hazardous, Japanese waters for several days, and has drawn the attention of Japanese ships, which she has evaded. Her good fortunes come to an end when an enemy plane, and then patrol boats, find and attack her at the mouth of Warangoi Bay between New Guinea and New Ireland. It is a horrifyingly violent depth-charge attack, as large portions of the sub float to the surface along with a large oil slick. She is lost with All Hands. USS Amberjack and her crew of 72 Officers and Men of the United States Navy remain on Eternal Patrol. 80 Years Ago, Today… Never Forgotten. 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photo: US Navy, via PubDom uboat.net #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #ussamberjack #amberjack #pacificfleet #pacificwar #pacifictheater #gatoclass #americansubmarine #ussubmarine #usnavy #silentservice #eternalpatrol #oneternalpatrol #theyshallnotdietwice #neverforgotten #honorthefallen (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CovKyfNPxG_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
