American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) in Algonquin Provincial Park. These are the largest Frogs in North America, although the one pictured here isn't a fully grown adult (the spots indicate that it's transformed from a Tadpole fairly recently). Although most of a Bullfrog's diet is made up of aquatic invertebrates, they can and will consume basically any animal they can capture and swallow. They're even known to find smaller frog species by their breeding calls and prey upon them. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #bullfrog #lithobates #lithobatescatesbeianus #frog #frogsofinstagram #frogstagram #frogphotography #amphibiansofontario #amphibiansofinstagram #herps #herpetology #amphibianphotography #ontarionature #ontariofrogs #frogsofontario #ecology #naturalhistory #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpark #ontarioprovincialparks (at Algonquin Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEGyPqwg80n/?igshid=1rgfbx6afzsgc

Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) on the Lynn Valley Trail, a few weeks ago. These are the most common woodland Salamanders of the Great Lakes region. Despite their tiny, weak-looking limbs they occasionally climb into trees and shrubs to forage, which usually happens during rainy nights. Their diet is made up of many small invertebrates, usually those found within leaf litter or under logs. They are surprisingly fast when exposed, as I found out while trying to take good pictures of them. Unlike most amphibians which require a body of water in which to reproduce, the Red-backed Salamander lays eggs in an underground chamber or within a rotting log or stump. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #easternredbackedsalamander #redbackedsalamander #plethodon #plethodoncinereus #amphibiansofontario #salamander #salamandersofinstagram #ontariowildlifephotography #lynnvalleytrail #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #norfolkcountyontario #simcoeontario #cwfphotoclub #canadiananimals #salamanderphotography #herpsofig (at Lynn Valley Walking Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHFbxDSghL9/?igshid=1kwgm1zrndt8q

Eastern American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) in Algonquin Provincial Park. There are only two species of Toads in Ontario, and the other species (Fowler's Toad) is limited to a few breeding sites along Northern Lake Erie. American Toads can live up to 10 years or more, but rarely make ot past 2 years in the wild because of their many predators. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #amphibians #amphibiansofinstagram #americantoad #anaxyrusamericanus #anaxyrus #toadsofinstagram #toad #herpsofinstagram #bufonidae #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpark #amphibiansofontario (at Algonquin Provincial Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CD8y1nAALur/?igshid=1aumi8dn10u5k
