What is the Hall Effect?
The Hall Effect was discovered in 1879 by Edwin Herbert Hall, a doctoral candidate at Johns Hopkins University. The effect produces a voltage differential across an electrical conductor, which an Analog Hall Effect Sensor reads. This potential gradient is formed as the result of the electric current that runs crosswise to the conductor in the presence of a magnetic field that is perpendicular to the current.

Three small charge carriers make up a current’s movement: electrons, holes, and ions. If these carry mostly positive charges, they are deflected to the top of the conductor. This results in the top of the strip having a higher positive charge than the bottom. However, if most of the carriers are negatively charged, then they will give the top of the conductor a more negative charge, reversing the conductor’s polarity.
At first, the positive charges move upwards, towards the top of the conductor, creating an electric potential between the bottom and top of the conductor. Given enough time, the downward potential will eventually create a downward electric pull on the charge carriers. This downward force will naturally equal the upward magnetic pull on the charge carriers, which causes the conductor to reach a state of equilibrium. The voltage across the top and bottom of the conductor will be constant. At this point, the current flow across the conductor will be constant as well. This is what the Analog Hall Effect Sensor detects.
The discovery of the Hall Effect has had a profound impact on a variety of industries today. It has enabled the creation of an Analog Hall Effect Sensor, a transducer that changes its output voltage as a result of fluctuations in a magnetic field. These sensors are often employed for tasks such as current sensing, proximity switching, speed detection, and positioning.
