tw death, tw lung cancer
(it's not *that* sad, but nonetheless, it's about actual human death, so tw nonetheless)
Around 2 years ago I worked at the local christmas market, and the owners of the shop I worked at were an old couple, who were really really nice. Overall, it was a very familiar atmosphere, none of that corporate bs, they also paid us considerably well, and we're just. In general really cool chill old people. It was a lot of fun working with them, and if I ever get the chance, I would like to work there again.
Unfortunately they both smoked a lot, especially the man, who was also Coughing™ a lot. Now, 1 year ago, I talked to the woman, and found out that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. But she also told me that the chemotherapy was apparently working, and how happy she was that she could spend another Christmas with him, etc, and that’s the last thing I had heard from them, until about 2 weeks ago. Basically, she posted some pictures of him with friends and family on her WhatsApp story, as well as a picture of his tombstone, showing that he died in July of this year.
I remember seeing it while I was in the bus, and almost starting to cry, but I managed to hold the tears back, thinking I’ll deal with this at home. However, shortly after that, I started having a migraine, and the rest of the day was just lying in bed and suffering, and the whole thing kind of… didn’t register in my head? Or I pushed it back bc I genuinely really liked this grandpa, to the point where I can definitely say he is a bit of a role model for me. When I worked at the Christmas market he was already in his late 60s, and he was the type of old person that had seen and experienced so much stuff, you could ask him about ANYTHING in the world and he would have some sort of story to tell. He was also just really really good at talking and telling stories, he had at one point been part of a union and in general had been active politically when he was younger, and he was so so so incredibly kind.
Now here’s where the……. “Funny” Part comes:
His surname was “Bonk”, which is rather rare in Germany, and also just. A funny name. During the time I was working there, I had a joke going on with my friends, where I would “bonk” them on the head as a greeting (not actually hitting them, just doing the motion), and them “bonking” me back. So when I found out that my boss’ name from my first ever job was “BONK” of all things, this was fucking hilarious. Also, when he would answer a call, he didn’t say something like “Ja, hallo?”, but he would just say “Bonk.”, and me and the others working there (mostly students) would have to hold back our laughing.
And yesterday I was video calling with my boyfriend, and I had completely forgotten about the whole thing, when my boyfriend at one point mimicked the “bonk” meme - at which point it all suddenly came crashing down, and I just started sobbing uncontrollably. At the same time, this whole situation was so incredibly absurd, bc of all things that could have possibly reminded me of this, it was a MEME to finally do the trick. My bf was super worried, bc, imagine it from his perspective:
You’re video calling your girlfriend who’s doing an exchange semester abroad, everything is normal, you’re joking, then you act like you’re hitting your own head and say “bonk bonk bonk” - and suddenly she starts wailing like a baby. Poor boy got scared that something bad had happened to me 😭😭
So bc of the absurdity of the situation I just started… cry-laughing? And I managed to explain what had happened, and why I was crying, and then we just sat there laughing (while I was still crying), and just. Ahhhhhhhhhh
I’m still sad about his passing, especially the thought that I will never again talk to him or listen to his silly stories really gets to me. But the whole situation kind of… lit up how I think about this? And I think it fits right into Herr Bonk’s humor, so I like to think that if he might still be watching or something like that, he finds it funny and probably has some sort of comeback about how I’m so silly for crying at this :,)
Anyways that was a lot of rambling sjhrfgjsdhgf if someone’s still reading this, please remember to support your local small businesses and artisan shops

"Breathe."
Sylus' quiet command unlocks my lungs, a rush of air flooding my nose as I inhale. I didn't even realize that I had stopped breathing, that my body had gone rigid under Vincent's uncomfortable stare.
Then I remember where we are, what that man has tried to take from me, who I'm standing beside.
I lift my chin, something bold and unfamiliar coiling inside me that I can't ignore. "Shall we go say hello?"
Sylus' gaze burns hot on the side of my face. I can practically feel his question, can sense that I've caught him off guard. He was probably expecting me to freeze up, to ask to return to the hotel where I'd be safe and out of the line of fire.
Except, the safest place to be is right by Sylus' side, isn't it?
Finally turning away from Vincent, I look up at Sylus. "Being afraid means he has power over me. I won't give him that."
He regards me for a moment before setting his sights back on Vincent. Then, without a word, our arms still securely linked, he leads the way. Every step we take fills me with both power and dread, this new need to hold my ground warring with my instincts to flee. It's only natural, given I've spent most of my life keeping my head down to avoid confrontations like this.
Sylus said once that even in a Halloween costume, I wouldn't be able to affect Onychinus' reputation. He said that my smile is my greatest weapon. Being soft doesn't mean I'm weak, I know that, but still, I want to represent Onychinus well. After everything Sylus has done for me, whether the intention was grand or not, I want to try.
We make it halfway across the painting hall before Vincent seems to change his mind. He dips his head and turns, disappearing down the hall that leads back to the museum's entrance.
A weight lifts from my shoulders as I blink in surprise. "That's not how I was expecting this to go."
Sylus lifts his free hand to his ear. "Luke, Kieran, look into the chairman of Eternity Jewels. Don't let him out of your sight."
I can't hear the twins response, but I can imagine their enthusiastic 'Yes, Sir!'.
"So, what now?" I ask.
"Now," Sylus says, steering me towards the hallway that leads to the World of Fossils. "We wait."
Tumblr media
On the outskirts of Dyamond City, too far to be bathed in the glow of the nightlife, sits a shabby motel lost to the shadows. A single streetlamp flickers on and off next to the driveway, a wooden sign with chipped paint deeming this lot as the Road Stop Motel. Every room in this motel is vacant... with the exception of one.
Frantic, Vincent shoves his sorry collection of personal belongings into a brown backpack, cursing up a storm with every breath. He was a fool to think he had gotten away. A moron for thinking Sylus would only be satisfied with the destruction of his company.
Not even a week after January's gemstone auction, Eternity Jewels closed its doors. All of Vincent's staff fled, all his wealth eradicated in the explosive demolition of the company's headquarters. The few million dollars he had left went into the transportation and treatment of his ill wife, to forging a new identity. He tried to restart his business here, but failed and went bankrupt.
He should have known Miss. Natalia's invitation wasn't out of pity, but a trap. He should have known Onychinus was still hunting him. Should have-
Black and red mist fills the room. It seizes Vincent, hoists him off his feet and pins him against the moldy wall with his arms and legs spread out. He thrashes, but his efforts only serve to tighten the misty binds.
"Sylus, you bastard!" He swears at the figure standing in front of the window. "Unhand me!"
Illuminated by the faint glow of the moon, Sylus' eyes glow demon red. His voice, low and lethal, sucks all the heat out of Vincent's body.
"Is that how you should be talking to me right now?" Sylus takes a step closer, then another, until he's standing in the middle of the small room. "This place suits you better than your mansion ever did."
He sinks into the most well-kept chair and crosses one knee over the other, arms resting on the cushioned armrests. He takes in his prey, his disheveled hair and the fresh scratches on his knuckles, his formal outfit that's just a tad too big.
Sylus smirks. "Who did you attack and take those clothes from?"
"Fuck you!" Vincent snaps, the look in his eyes crazed. "I wouldn't be in this position if you had just stayed out of my business!"
"I would have stayed out of your business if you hadn't began engaging in such trade in my territory, Mr. Vincent."
The formality is a vicious stab to Vincent's gut, a reminder of the power he's lost. Still, on this verbal battlefield, he fights for the upper hand. "If that’s the game you want to play, then you ought to be paying me, Sylus. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have that little bitch at your beck and call.”
Sylus’ eyes narrow, his mist focusing in on the man’s shoulder.
Vincent screams as his left shoulder pops out of his socket with a sickening sound. “FUCK!”
“Careful.” Sylus growls, his lazy demeanor taking on a predatory edge. “I don’t take kindly to those who speak ill of my employees.”
Grinding his teeth, Vincent's glare burns with hatred. "If you're here to kill me, then stop messing around. Since when does Onychinus play with their food?"
Sylus chuckles. "Kill you? Maybe I should. It appears that even though you've fled the N109 Zone, you're still making yourself a nuisance."
"You're going out?" Hand on the knob of the hotel room's front door, Sylus looks over his shoulder. His assistant is looking up at him with worried eyes, the gown she has yet to change out of still covering her body. "There's a loose end I need to tie up. It shouldn't take long." He says, prepared to open the door. Evie steps closer and catches the hem of his blazer's sleeve. "I know I'm probably in no position to make requests like this, but... If this 'loose end' has anything to do with Vincent... Don't kill him. Taking his life won't erase what he's done." Sylus narrows his eyes a little. "You do realize that letting him go means there's a chance he'll come back later?" She swallows, the muscles in her slender neck moving with the movement. "I know, but sentencing someone to death because they've wronged me is selfish. I don't want to live that kind of life."
Smirk dropping to a frown, Sylus flicks his fingers. Vincent lets out a bloodcurdling scream as his other arm dislodges from its socket, the mist suspending him in the air vanishing. His body falls to the floor, and without the use of his arms, he goes face first into the wooden floor.
Rising to his feet, Sylus casually adjusts the cuffs of his sleeves. "I'm feeling generous this evening, so consider this a warning." Stepping towards Vincent's body, he presses a foot down on his left shoulder and waits for the screaming to stop before continuing. "Cross my path again, and your life is forfeit."
Vincent winces as Sylus' shoe comes off his shoulder. He glares at the white-haired man's figure as he makes for the door, struggles to stay conscious through the pain. His shoulders throb, he doesn't have the strength to get up. Though his vision begins to blur, there is one thing he can see clearly.
Whether Sylus realizes it or not, that woman is his weakness.

The SUV pulls to a smooth stop in front of the apartment building. Gathering my purse and book, I smile at Tim through the rearview mirror. "Thanks for the safe ride home, Tim."
The older man smiles kindly back at me, the photograph of his granddaughters slightly swinging back and forth off the mirror. "No need to thank me every time, Miss. Evie. It's what I do."
"I appreciate all the same. I'll see you again tonight."
Stepping out of the car, I wave a farewell and make my way inside. The SUV's engine is a gentle hum as it steers back onto the street, disappearing from view the second the steel door closes behind me. It's early in the morning, a little after 5:30, and the overnight security guard has dozed off at his desk. He's slouched in his chair, legs propped up and crossed on his desk, arms folded over his chest, head tilted down.
Poor Elijah must have run out of coffee at some point during the night.
Keeping my steps light as to not disturb him, I head to the elevator and swipe my card. The nice thing about the new building is that, on top of the security guards and surveillance cameras, every elevator and stairwell requires a keycard to get through. Even once I've entered the elevator, I have to input a code for my floor in order to get there.
I pull out my phone as the elevator rises, texting Luke and Kieran to let them know I made it back safe and sound. It's become a routine since I started working for Onychinus, and ever since the encounter with Vincent last week at Dyamond City, they've been a little extra protective.
Recalling that night at the museum, it isn't fear I feel, but something warm. I truly wasn't expecting Sylus to actually follow through on my request to let Vincent live, but he did. For Vincent's sake, I hope he keeps his head down and doesn't land on Sylus' radar again. He has a sick wife to take care of, after all. He meant me serious harm, yes, but still, I hope his wife is doing better.
The elevator lets me off on the nineteenth floor, and I make my way through the twists and turns of the hallway until reaching the unit my brothers and I share. I'm careful to stay quiet as I punch in the digital code, then place my thumb on the scanner and wait for it to flash green. The lock clicks as it slides out of place, the handle turning effortlessly under my hand.
That's when the world, my chaotically peaceful, happy little world, comes to a halt.
Disaster awaits me on the other side, the new home my brothers and I put together in absolute shambles. The coffee table has been flipped over, the glass top shattered and scattered across the floor. The TV that we gather around every evening before I leave for work is cracked, the ornaments decorating the sides of the TV's stand knocked onto the floor. The chairs at the kitchen table are overturned, the faucet is still running water... but the scariest sight of all is the bullet holes in one of the couches. No blood to be found, but the lack of crimson stains does nothing to stop my own blood from running cold in my veins.
There was a gun in our home. There was an attack in our home.
And my brothers are missing.
"Drew?! Mateo?!" I cry, letting my purse and book fall as I dash around the apartment, checking every single bedroom and bathroom. "Simon?! Troy?!"
None of the other rooms look like they've been touched. The only thing out of the ordinary is Troy's bedroom door, which looks like it was thrown open with so much force, the knob left a dent in the drywall.
By the time I return to the main room, I'm in full blown panic. My heart is racing, air is struggling to stay in my lungs, my nerves are shot...
I need help.
My body moves on autopilot, legs carrying me at a full blown sprint back the way I came. I don't bother with the elevator, charging right into the stairwell and racing down all nineteen flights of stairs until I'm on the ground floor.
"Elijah!" I scream, racing towards his desk. I grab his shoulder and give him a shake. "Elijah, wake-"
His head rolls to the side, revealing a fatal gash across his throat.
Elijah wasn't sleeping on the job... he was murdered.
A sob gets caught in my throat as I take a step back, keep going until my back hits the wall on the other side of the lobby. My knees shake, threaten to give out and drop me right there. My mind, running on its last gear, goes blank.
I don't even remember leaving the apartment building. Don't remember sprinting all the way to the base. I only come back into myself when I'm throwing open the doors to Sylus' personal wing, disturbing the silence that signifies that everyone is asleep.
"Sylus!" I scream through my heaving lungs. "Luke! Kier-"
My legs give out as a cough punches me in the chest, followed by an entire storm of them. My entire body is shaking, ears are ringing, vision blurring as water builds and falls from my eyes. I can just barely make out Mephisto's caws from somewhere in the room, have no energy to fight the arms that lift me from the floor and drop me onto something softer.
"Breathe." It's Sylus' voice, I think. The blurry figure crouching in front of me is certainly big enough to be him.
I try to suck in a breath, but another sob just destroys the effort. "Brothers. M-My brothers-"
The ringing in my ears intensifies as my head suddenly goes light. My vision worsens, going from blurry to a world of white. My body feels lighter, much to light to have control over. I can feel myself being laid down, can pick up fragments of someone barking orders.
Then I'm gone to the world.
Tumblr media
I awaken to an unbearable throbbing in my temples. Groaning, I turn my head with every intention of burying my face in my pillow, but quickly realize there isn't a pillow beneath my head. Whatever I'm laying on doesn't feel like my bed, either... or any bed at all.
Pain shocks my head as I open my eyes, the lighting, although dim, aggravates my head further. I recognize the ceiling, the light fixtures, the mechanical crow perched on the armrest above my head.
Everything comes back to me, and I shoot up on the couch. My head screams as I look around, eyes fixating on the sight of Sylus sitting in the arm chair nearby.
"You passed out from a panic attack." He explains calmly, red eyes checking me over as if searching for an injury. "Luke and Kieran are investigating your apartment right now."
"How long was I out?" I ask, standing up.
"About fifteen minutes." He moves his laptop off his lap. "What happened?"
"I don't know. I got home and found the place like that." A wave of nausea hits me, but not the kind that makes me want to throw up. It's the mental kind of nausea, the one that sets your head on a tailspin. "I tried to get help from the security guard but he was... Someone killed him, Sylus, and now my brothers are missing-"
His phone rings, cutting me off. Sylus checks the caller ID and is quick to answer.
"Speak." He's quiet as he listens, but the pull of his brows makes a knot form in my stomach. "Hold him. I'm on my way."
"Was that the twins? Did they find my brothers?" I bombard him with questions the second he gets off the phone, unable to control myself.
Sylus takes a breath before looking at me. "They found someone who's more than likely involved. I'm going to go have a little chat with him and find out."
"I'm coming with-"
Red and black mist coils around my midsection, lifting me off my feet and setting me down on the couch. "You're staying here."
I look up at him, eyes wide with disbelief. It only lasts a moment before they narrow into a stubborn glare. "No. Way."
"Sweetie, have you ever watched an interrogation before? Regardless of how your books make it sound, it's not pretty." His tone is cold. He's not negotiating.
Defiant, I stand up again. "I watched you mist men to death that night at the auction. I went with you to get those women out. How will this be any different?"
Sylus walks right up to me, only stopping when the tips of his shoes touch mine. He leans in close, much so that I have to tilt my head far back to look at him. "The man Luke and Kieran captured? They found him hiding in your apartment, Evie."
My breath gets caught in my throat, and I swear I can feel the blood drain from my face. "But... that can't... I searched all the rooms and-"
"Did you check the closets?" When I fail to answer, because no, I didn't, he continues. “Did it occur to you that someone could have been lying in wait for an opportunity to ambush you? Were you paying attention to your surroundings on the way here? Did you look out for anyone who could have been following you?"
Every question he throws slices through me like a freshly sharpened knife. My mouth goes dry, 'no' sitting on my tongue but unable to come out. He sounds harsh, but his point is valid. There are a hundred ways I could have died or been captured this morning, all because I dissolved into a blind panic.
I shouldn't have searched the apartment on my own. I should have grabbed my phone from my purse and called Sylus instead of racing here. I should have told my brothers the truth the second I got back like I swore to myself I would, but didn't because I choked every time I tried.
I should have... I should have...
My eyes start to sting. "Is this my fault?"
Sylus is quiet for a moment, ever the pillar of calm and steady despite the storm that's brewing. "Let's wait and see who's behind this before assigning blame." Slowly, he reaches for my cheek and catches an escaped tear with the back of his index finger. "But, no. This isn't your fault."
A lump forms in my throat, and I have no choice but to swallow it down. "Bring them back. Please."
It's not a fair ask, not if the worst has already befallen my brothers. He nods anyway and heads out, taking Mephisto with him.
Tumblr media
Luke and Kieran may be the biggest pair of menaces Sylus has ever met, but they're efficient. The main room of Evie's apartment is a wreck, and in the middle of the mess is a young, short and slim man with curly strawberry blond hair. He's tied to a chair, Luke and Kieran poking at him with the hilts of their daggers as if he's some strange alien creature.
The man looks up at Sylus approaches. He doesn't look fearful, but more like he's given up.
Sylus glares down at him. "I suggest you tell me everything you know. I'm sure I don't need to explain what will happen if you don't."
The man sighs. "My name's Landon. I used to work for the chairmen of Eternity Jewels as an errand runner. I assumed Mr. Vincent had died when the company was destroyed, but a few days ago, I got a call from him. He reached out to several of us who were under his employment and said he'd pay us enough to live the rest of our lives without worry if we snagged some hostages for him. I didn't realize it was Evie's family he was after until I saw her come in."
Landon hisses as a swarm of red and black mist circles his throat. He was warned about this, was told that death is better than being caught.
"So, you stayed behind to wait for her." Sylus' left hand clenches into a fist so tight, his knuckles turn white and his veins become prominent. "Why didn't you act?"
"Because I couldn't bring myself to do it." A sad look crosses Landon's face. "I've never met anyone with such genuine kindness before. If I had known what Mr. Vincent was planning at the auction, I never would have invited her."
"Where are her brothers now?"
"At the warehouse district. There's a warehouse the company used for a while, but it wasn't big enough so production eventually moved locations. Mr. Vincent still owns it, though."
"Where?"
Landon spits out the address. Having gotten what he came for, Sylus turns to the twins. One doesn't need to see their faces to know that beneath those crow-like masks, the twins are fuming.
"Do what you want with him, just don't do it in here." Sylus says, turning towards the door. "When you're done, return to the base."
"Yes, Sir!"
"Wait!" Landon suddenly calls out. "Mr. Vincent's plan wasn't to capture Evie, but to use her to lure you in. He knows she would do anything for her brothers, even if it means betraying you."
Sylus hums. Vincent is smarter than he gave him credit for - he would have gone to the warehouse without question if Evie had asked him to. She truly is becoming a weak point of his, as much as he tries to resist it.
Like a crow to a shiny trinket, a dragon to gold, he just can't help but want to keep her and attack anyone who tries to steal her from his possession.
"It seems Vincent doesn't know her as well as he thinks he does." The smirk Sylus flashes over his shoulder is a sinister one. "Because she'd sooner sacrifice herself than turn her back on the people she cares about."
And that's exactly why he left her behind.
"One more thing." Sylus says, lingering in the doorway. "Vincent is broke."
The colour drains from Landon's face.

Fossil Friday: Ammonite
Ammonite is a preserved shell belonging to an Ammolite or other creature belonging to the subclass Ammonoidea. These fossils are the remains of an extinct marine cephalopod (mollusc) from the Jurassic period (about 200 million years ago) to the late Cretaceous period (about 66 million years ago). Ammonites died off at roughly the same time as flightless dinosaurs. Ammonites were a unique group of creatures, likely having eight separate arms, resembling a coleoid (squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish), while the shell and it's shape closer resembling a nautilus. An estimated 10-20 thousand species of ammonite have been discovered, so no two fossils will be the same. The largest ammonite specimen found was over 1.8 metres (approx. 5.9 feet) in length, while being an incomplete fossil. Ammonite can be found at any location where prehistoric oceans once were. Ammonite is often used as an index fossil, being used to date the approximate age of the rocks it is embedded in. Ammonite is considered to be one of the world's rarest gemstones when the shell appears iridescent.
It is crucial to be aware of laws and regulations governing fossil collection in your area. Many places require all fossils found to be sent to a palaeontologist, and have strict regulations on the selling of locally found specimens.
More information about ammonites can be found here.
Stay tuned for next week's Fossil Friday!

Trip to Vienna
Activity title: Trip to Vienna
Duration: 3 days (November 30th-December 2nd)
Type of activity: Creativity, Activity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Learning outcomes
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Activity description
Aleksej and I recently traveled to Vienna and visited numerous places that are important for art, science, and history. During our visit, we explored many tourist attractions including the Belvedere Palace, the Museum of Technology and Science, the Natural History Museum, and the History of Art Museum.
The Belvedere Palace, a Baroque masterpiece was one of the things that impressed us the most. We admired the beautiful architecture and the spectacular gallery inside the palace. Artist that surprised us the most was Gustav Klimt, especially his painting The Kiss. His techinque and his paintings were really impressive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also visited the Museum of Technology and Science, which surprised us with its interactive exhibits and its innovation corner which was mostly centered around biotechnology. The museum has exhibition of machines throughout history and it made us realize how much humans have developed. There was a special exhibition dedicated to the ethics of nuclear energy, which made us think about this global problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Natural History Museum was another highlight of our trip, offering an insight in the natural world. Seeing exhibits of ancient fossils, gemstones, and reconstructed dinosaurs, we gained a deeper appreciation for the earth's history and biodiversity. The part which we enjoyed the most is the mineral section. The museum has a collection of gemstones from all over the world, which is really fascinating
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, our visit to the History of Art Museum was an opportunity to engage with the works of most famous artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Velázquez. The looks of the museum itself, with its brilliant architecture was an experience itself. This visit was a reminder of how art is the best expression of people's emotion throughout the history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through this trip, we were able to learn about different disciplines, from art to science. It was an amazing experience that not only widened our knowledge but also inspired us to think about our place in a world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflection
Our trip to Vienna was an eye-opening experience. Visiting museums of different disciplines made us think about global issues we wouldn't have thought of before. Some of them are ethics of nuclear energy, how can people percieve art and biodiversity of our planet. Overall, this was an experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Moonstone is the collective name for the iridescent varieties of a selected group of feldspars, namely adularia (orthoclase) and iridescent peristerite (albite-oligoclase) and, also, anorthoclase and antiperthite that may also show similar optical effects and may also be classified as moonstone in the trade. The term has also been used to describe colourless iridescent (labradorescent) andesine-labradorite feldspar known in the trade as "rainbow moonstone". The amount of above-mentioned complex mineral names and concepts prove that commercial names are indeed very practical when communicating gem products outside the academic and science worlds. The most common variety as a gemstone is adularia moonstone, typically colourless to white coloured, sometimes yellow or grey, that is most prized when exhibiting adularescence (or peristerescence), the so-called schiller effect. This optical effect is caused by a combination of light scattering from very tiny particles (the so-called tyndall effect) and iridescence caused by thin film interference in twinning planes. Historically known in Austria, it is found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Tanzania, India, Madagascar and USA (New Mexico). Many years ago I attended the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. It is the largest gem show in the world and is actually a series of shows sponsored by various organizations. It lasts the month of February every year. Dealers come from all over the world. It's quite a feast for the mineral, gemstone, and fossil lover. You'll see things there you won't likely see anyplace else. The piece of jewelry that won first place in that year's competition was a rainbow moonstone necklace in gold. The moonstones were all pear shaped and graduated in size. The photos of it were amazing. But when I saw the actual piece in the AGTA showcase, it seemed to float in its display. I've never seen anything so remarkable.

Brief Personality: Aven seems to be very naïve but kindhearted, he is nothing like the rumors spread about him and the horrors he committed during the war. In fact if you didn’t know his title you wouldn’t have known he was a general at all. It seems Aven overcompensates for his innocence being taken away by playing up a faux naïveté. However he does genuinely mean well all things considered.
Brief Backstory:
Aven was born to the founders of the top A.I manufacturing company in the world, basically born with a silver spoon in his mouth. When the incident happened, the inciting war completely ruined Salendine Industries and his parents reputation, most people blamed Salendine for the war due to them making “defective” A.I systems. However Salendine decided to make it up to the world by partnering with the then President. The President ordered them to make a solution for the problem they caused and for the next few years or so they tried everything.
Salendine did a multitude of different experiments in order to try and stop the A.I, they started out with only experimenting on A.I systems to see if there was a way to rewire them into being submissive, however this failed immensely, which made them move into human experimentation.
Salendine most notable experiment of course was on the Presidents child, Alexander Leverett, who ended up becoming the savior of the world, not because of Salendine of course, but still he did. However Alexander was not the only victim of Salendine. Among many of the victims, Aven was also experimented on.
Aven wasn’t particularly special like Alexander was, however he was used to see if there was a way for humans to defeat A.I on their own. They focused on whether or not they could make a human super soldier. They did experiments to see if Aven could learn how to predict the future and they succeeded... somewhat… they didn’t really care about the horrible side effects Aven would have due to his newly found abilities.
Aven was made a General in the army at a very young age and he was great at it, he was able to command armies of humans using his power and was able to siege a lot of A.I bases. Aven does not enjoy or really remember much of his time during the war, a side effect of his power and his trauma is his incredibly poor memory.
Aven knows however due to how people look at him that he did horrible things under the control of Salendine. After the war he hid away from the public, ending up in a mental health facility with Alexander, where he is currently.

to be strictly fair, the Wood Between The Worlds does come up in The Last Battle. it's the Pevensies' plan for getting back to Narnia after the collective vision of Narnia's captive king begging for their help.
they know it's not a good plan, because they won't have any way to know which pool is the way to Narnia, and something about the Wood fucks with memory and motivation. there's hardly any time spent on page about it, because we don't get any of the English characters' point of view on anything in England in that book except when they're telling us about it after the fact. at which point it's an irrelevance, because it's not what they do, because they all die in a train crash before any of them make the attempt. Jill and Eustace just route through being-colonized Narnia before regrouping with the others in More Intense Narnia.
(because English people colonizing other places is the divinely ordained natural order of things, and there weren't any people there when the first English people got there anyway. definitely not any real human people there when more English people came back to reclaim the land, and never mind everyone already living there who helped and/or fought and/or avoided the English newcomers. but brown people with a different religion as the colonizers? literal end of the literal world)
but it's not just a plot device Lewis thought up while writing the sixth-but-earliest of seven books. it's just blink-and-you-miss-it in book seven.
.
also like, people make jewelry with like bugs fossilized in amber all the time. or a lock of hair kept in a locket. or there's the entire history of tools and adornments made of bone and sinew. or anything strung on a leather cord. or, hey, wooden jewelry exists; is there such a thing in Narnia as a living tree that is not also, or a piece of wood that never was, a living person? (certainly there isn't in RL according to anyone sufficiently animistic. special highlight to the ancient Greeks, though they're hardly alone in understanding natural features to be spirits and gods, they're just already frequently referenced in the literary traditions Lewis was drawing on for Narnian dryads.)
jewelry made of corpses is not weird, is my point. people just get weird about it. the gemstones being corpses too changes nothing about that.
narnia has actually way too many completely devastating concepts in it that are not explored At All

Field Museum
Unearth the Wonders of the Field Museum in Chicago
Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan within Chicago’s renowned Museum Campus, the Field Museum is a world-class natural history museum that has captured the imagination of millions. From towering dinosaur skeletons to rare gemstones and ancient Egyptian artifacts, the Field Museum offers an immersive journey through billions of years of Earth’s history. Whether you’re a science enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a family with kids, the Field Museum is a must-see cultural gem in the Windy City.
A Legacy of Discovery
Founded in 1893, the Field Museum was originally established as the Columbian Museum of Chicago, created to house the biological and anthropological collections from the World’s Columbian Exposition. It was renamed in honor of Marshall Field, a department store magnate and philanthropist whose generous donation made the museum possible.
Today, the Field Museum is one of the largest and most respected natural history museums in the world, boasting a collection of over 40 million artifacts and specimens, only a fraction of which are on display at any given time.
Must-See Exhibits at the Field Museum
The Field Museum is massive — you could easily spend an entire day exploring its sprawling exhibits. Here are some of the top attractions you won’t want to miss:
1. SUE the T. rex
No visit to the Field Museum is complete without meeting SUE, the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered. At over 40 feet long and 13 feet tall at the hip, SUE is an awe-inspiring sight and one of the museum’s biggest stars. She now resides in a specially designed hall with interactive displays about her life, diet, and the science behind her discovery.
2. Evolving Planet
Travel back in time through 4.6 billion years of evolution, from the origins of life on Earth to the rise of dinosaurs and beyond. This permanent exhibit features dramatic fossil displays, engaging graphics, and lifelike models that help explain the forces that shaped our planet and the diversity of life we see today.
3. Inside Ancient Egypt
Descend into the depths of ancient tombs and explore the mysteries of the afterlife in one of the most comprehensive Egyptian exhibits in the United States. The exhibit features a three-story replica of a tomb, real mummies, sarcophagi, artifacts, and a wealth of insight into ancient Egyptian life, death, and religion.
4. Grainger Hall of Gems
This glittering gallery showcases some of the world’s most beautiful gems and minerals, including diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Along with aesthetic beauty, the exhibit educates visitors about geology, crystallography, and the formation of precious stones.
5. Ancient Americas
Explore 13,000 years of Indigenous cultures across North, Central, and South America. The exhibit features ancient tools, pottery, textiles, and ceremonial objects that tell the story of innovation, adaptation, and survival long before European contact.
6. Máximo the Titanosaur
In Stanley Field Hall, you’ll be greeted by Máximo, a life-sized cast of the largest dinosaur ever discovered — a titanosaur from Argentina that stretches 122 feet from head to tail. Unlike SUE, Máximo is a gentle giant, and you can walk directly underneath him to get a sense of his truly massive scale.
Educational and Interactive Features
The Field Museum is known not just for its incredible collection, but for how it brings science to life. It’s packed with interactive stations, hands-on learning labs, and digital displays that help visitors of all ages connect with natural history.
The Cyrus Tang Hall of China offers a multimedia look into China’s 5,000 years of history. The DNA Discovery Center lets you observe real scientists extracting DNA. And at the Nature Walk, you can see lifelike dioramas of mammals and birds in their natural habitats.
For families, the Crown Family PlayLab provides a fun, hands-on space where kids can touch real fossils, play musical instruments from around the world, and dress up in cultural costumes.
Field Museum Events and Programs
The museum frequently hosts special exhibitions, seasonal events, and scientific lectures. Past exhibitions have covered topics ranging from the ancient city of Pompeii to Antarctic expeditions and climate change.
Other popular events include:
Field After Dark: Adult-only evenings with cocktails, science talks, and behind-the-scenes access
Dozin’ with the Dinos: A family-friendly sleepover in the museum

Explorer Café: A larger dining area with hot food options and a great spot for groups
Museum Store: A well-stocked shop featuring books, puzzles, fossils, science kits, and unique gifts

GOLD JEWELLERY If your prized gold Trollbeads treasures have gotten a little dull, you’re only a quick clean away from gold that sparkles and shines like new! Gold is a wonderful, eye-catching material, but as one of the softer metals used in jewellery making it needs to be treated with care. With these simple methods and some household products, you can restore your 18k gold beads and 14k gold bracelets to their full lustre. GLASS JEWELLERY Trollbeads glass jewellery styles are handmade from exquisite Italian Murano glass. This vibrant and gorgeous material is surprisingly durable and easy to clean. It’s important to know what stones you have in your collection to know how to clean them safely and effectively. PEARL JEWELLERY Pearls have been used as a stunning natural gem in jewellery for generations. Their soft, lustrous glow is one-of-a-kind, but due to their fragile and porous nature it is important to care for them correctly. Knowing the right cleaners and methods to use is integral to keeping your pearl jewellery in tip top shape. If you take care of your Trollbeads pearls correctly, they will last for years to come! AMBER JEWELLERY Amber is a rare and treasured gemstone, made of fossilized pine tree resin from millions of years ago. Despite its ancient age, amber can be soft and prone to damage if cleaned incorrectly. Our methods below will help you to remove dirt and restore your amber to its full, dazzling potential! COPPER JEWELLERY Copper is a beautiful salmon-hued metal with a signature gleam. Because of sulfides in the air, it can tarnish over time – if left for many years, to the iconic green hue of landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty! Fortunately, copper beads can be cleaned easily with products you have around the house. DIAMOND JEWELLERY If you’re lucky enough to own one of our stunning diamond treasures, you might need some tips on how to keep it sparkling for all time. Diamonds are one of the oldest and hardest gemstones in the world, but they still need a little help to keep looking their best.

@ gothic litblr / anyone else who is as insane as I am do we think Dorian Gray would have liked fossils
We know he collected gemstones and he loves things that are pretty and rare and refined and probably could relate himself to a beautiful mineralised ammonite in a world of ‘plain’ old rock. He might have been fascinated by the eclectic alien forms life on earth once took and revel in the ways they uniquely thrived
Or do we think the unfathomable age of these things and the fact that they’re unavoidably long dead now would be an issue and he’d find them creepy with his being all about living life to the fullest at present and sulkily refusing to acknowledge death at every turn
