But even his “fairytale” universe is not black and white — if basically every game post-KH1, the UX/prequel era, and Riku’s entire character arc are anything to go by lol… That’s just the worldview Sora is clinging to, which is rapidly working out for him less and less.

The idea behind Sora being sent to “reality” is probably that reality and fantasy are not that different… They’re mirrors. They reflect each other. The same concepts exist, they just manifest in different ways. (And one person’s reality is another person’s unreality, so who’s to say what’s “real,” blah, blah…)

Point is, Sora absolutely can learn this lesson in his own universe. We’ve watched other characters (Aqua, Ventus, Mickey, Riku, etc.) do it. He’s seen plenty of proof that there is nuance in his own universe. It has practically been said to his face… He’s just stubborn and under a lot of pressure and (understandably) scared. It’s complicated.

#it’s interesting bc it’s fitting for sora as a 14 yr old hopping from fairytale world to fairytale world to initially have that #black&white moral view of the world. and in kh1 it works out in his favor. he benefits from embracing the light and battling the darkness #and it’s not easy but a simpler story. it seems obvious what’s right and what’s wrong #in CoM things start to get a little more complicated. namine does awful things for sympathetic reasons.#the more sora follows his heart — or at least what feels right instead of questioning what’s going on and why he feels like #something is right — the more it gets him into trouble. the more he loses himself #then in kh2 things get more complicated. sora has to deal with the repercussions of stabbing himself and then forgetting castle oblivion #and his black&white morals don’t jive as well w the story this time around bc the nobodies are sympathetic #and diz/ansem the wise — someone ‘good’ — is completely wrong about them #are they doing good things? no but they are people with sympathetic reasons that sora never stops to consider #it’s less heroes vs monsters and more hurt people vs hurt people #ddd is cruel about drilling this into sora’s head and he still only half accepts it #with each game the world becomes messier and messier. and sora’s refusal to engage w that reality becomes more immature #and a hindrance where it once benefitted
