tbh if a 5 remake comes out (which like you said is rlly likely with the ending of sw being what it was) i honestly cannot see it being any less racist than it was before. because either you keep core game mechanics that were racist, or you cut it out entirely, but that's removing the story of the original which was "hey these rich white eugenicist fucks colonized an entire sacred african village to use its sacred flowers for their own racist agenda and then used the virus they developed from it to kill all of them" like if you take THAT aspect out that's ALSO leaving out a core bit of the commentary from the og game which COULD have been an interesting storytelling point under a team that was more equipped to handle that kind of commentary. like there's just no way a 5 remake goes well, there's no way to remake the game we got without somehow being racist. that's just how i see it anyway
yeah. capcom has really cornered themselves (which is wild because they cornered themselves in the fucking racism corner of all things lmfao)
and while i definitely believe capcom needs to buck up and acknowledge AND fix the racism in 5, it's just so strange to me that they'd be trying to remake it at all, because there is no fucking way they can make it without racism.
and the thing is. the ideas of colonialism, white supremacy, eugenics, and anti blackness that the game introduces to us in 5 are actually integral to the plot of the entire franchise, because the desecration of black people in the global south, africa/specifically and especially, is where these belief systems lead. so seeing how white american eugenecists ravage africa is ABSOLUTELY necessary to the franchise, but it needs to be done in a way where these black people, who are VICTIMS, are treated like people, not bodies or targets or enemies, and given that we are unable to actually save any of the infected... that is impossible (and we haven't seen a mechanic like this implemented in any of the recent games, so it's clear this mechanic is off the table.) the only 2 black characters capcom treats like characters and not bodies are sheva and josh, and josh is barely in the game, and sheva is a playable character... but they went out of their way to make her light skinned, and to give her bone straight hair. and even if we do get this ideal re5 remake where they eradicate the racism ingrained in the games code... we still have to contend with the fact that it is STILL a white savior story. and they're not gonna change chris or his story, because this is chris and weskers Final Fight (it should be jills as well but alas. misogyny.) there is no winning. there is no inoffesnive 5r because capcom is completely unwilling to go all in to engage with these incredibly sensitive topics (topics they introduced in game 1)
