I Went On A Manga Binge
So you don't have to
For those of you who have wisely avoided the shreds of it I've left around the blog thus-far, I had some weird notion to go re-experience Yu-Gi-Oh uuuuuh a week ago? We'll go with that. Time is meaningless.
I'd been able to read a good portion of the early manga at the end of highschool, and somewhere in my stacks and stacks of paper is fanart from this dark time, so you know I cared. I also still own a Dark Magician action figure somehow, so. I'd also watched a large portion of the anime with my brother because it had been laced with some kind of crack and we couldn't look away? I remember when we both were just like shit, wait, don't change the channel, I can't stop looking at it. And the next thing we knew we were waiting for new episodes and I was doing research on the Japanese original because I was that kid.
Anyway, unnecessary backstory out of the way, here are some... let's call them Observations and Consequences of having read somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 chapters (and growing) of a manga primarily hinged on card games from a spectrum of sources ranging from boringly lawful to sketchy as fuck.
Surprise actual character that develops in typical shounen fashion being Jounouchi. My limited experiences with the 4Kids dub and only early manga had not painted him in a particularly good light. I don't know if episodes were being aired out of order or if I had just missed the ones that established that he was making shit up as he was going along, but Wow I liked him a lot more going through the manga than I ever did watching the (dubbed, heavily edited and censored and thrown into a slurry machine) anime. I'd managed to come out with the impression that he was just as reasonably experienced with the game as Yugi back in the day. Wild.
I'm now reading every single comic-style post on Tumblr backwards.
Striking inverse to first point, wow, I don't like Seto Kaiba. Though he gets points for his general philosophy of the future, and the line I read in my sketchy online combo of scans and scanlations in which he said, "If God is in your way, you run him down," was Metal As Fuck. I somewhat shame-facedly admit to enjoying him a lot more as an Abridged Series character. (I watched Abridged as it came out back in the day! The experience of watching the anime with my brother had been so fresh that I got all the in jokes about the way things were edited and dubbed, it was great. Series remains influential part of my life to this day, which is hella weird.)
I almost understand how Duel Monsters works now. I don't want this.
That said, wow a lot of the decisions made in the anime made everything a lot more ridiculous than the admittedly already ridiculous original. I got the distinct feeling in the manga that the Duelist Kingdom stuff we were seeing was designed to be used and exploited in ways that don't make sense in an actual cardgame just played on a table like a normal person and this was part of testing everyone to think higher, differently. Maybe this is obvious to everyone already, I don't know. I had always liked that it was very, 'Not so fast, I'm going to blow up the moon to change the tides,' but I'm not really sure the anime gave enough explanation that this was an extra layer added to things for that event? You can see people actively getting used to it in the books, and people who aren't considering the real or 3D nature of it getting owned, but my memory of anime version is everyone just like, 'oh, shucks, fuck me, I forgot to consider the phase of the moon before i played this card, can't believe I forgot.' No one calls Yugi on any of this stuff because it's valid play in that situation. Plus Yami Yugi had mad trickster energy in the beginning and it suited him to think of ways to do things inside these little simulation boxes the way it suited him to set perverts on fire. I imagine the real card game trying to emulate this element as something that would be to its detriment, but I neither know nor particular care haha
Ryou Bakura.
Really, though. I think he became kind of casualty of 'wow, we have a lot of characters who really aren't able to do anything in this story anymore,' despite the fact that his whole inner life could have been as interesting as Yugi's. I always like thinking about the possibilities of stories in which main character falls into magical world and is given magical item and told they're the hero and then they find out they've been the bad guy the whole time. The first several volumes of manga were about the quiet weirdo kid that no one talked to who was always blacking out and turning into a fucked up version of himsef because he was so attached to his ancient Egyptian jewelry, so like, Bakura could have much the same shit going on. I want to know what's happening with him so much. He clearly doesn't love being possessed, but he's also so drawn to the ring. Despite it having stabbed him at least twice and him knowing it's a danger to him and his friends, he keeps being pulled back into it. You see so much more of him being like, 'Oooh, a creepy thing, I love that! :D' in the manga than ever in the anime, which I'm all about. Also more blood. I'm very about that as well. Though my memory of the anime also made it look very much like normal regular daily Bakura was just a weird facade in places before he ever would have been. I think that was it trying to compensate for what people didn't see from the Toei anime, but okay whatever, that I love everything about this guy is not news, I don't need to talk about Bakura excessively here, I'm pretty sure that's gonna show up on my blog by itself
On a related note though, damn, more of these people need to talk to each other. Can we have some existential crisis support clubs or something. Can we get like some apologies or something? "I respect you as a duelist." "Cool, but you literally built a tower designed to specifically assassinate me and my friends? You were supposed to get Better after I retaliated by putting you in a coma, but you kinda didn't." "Why would the coma have made it better" "I just told you it didn't" ---- "Sorry I went along with the plan of your evil parasite stabbing you, misled you, and then also jumped in and took up some real estate in your head too." "I understand, I also have an evil thing inside me that does things while I'm blacked out." "...no, I was conscious for all of that." "Oh." "..." "..." "..." "Do you like Ouija Boards?" "sure okay" ETC. Like damn we are reading shounen manga because no one is talking extensively about their feelings here and I'm tapping my foot angrily.
Holy shit there are so many mythologies happening at once. The ancient family guarding the Egyptian Pharaoh has a surname that's a Mesopotamian goddess. None of the god cards make any Egyptian sense except Ra, and just like. Baaarrrrely. Somewhere either Evil Ring Bakura or Mar/lik makes a reference to cremation and spirits being taken to heaven with smoke which several things, but definitely not Ancient Egyptian. Marik/Malik meanwhile is clearly trying to head Arabic, along with Rishid, but then, hey, our sister is just Isis. Goddess McGoddess. Sometimes they're the same goddess! Her name could be Isis Isis or Ishtar Ishtar. Meanwhile, all the obviously 'occult because Christians think it is freaky' stuff. ~ancient egyptian pentagrams~~~This isn't a complaint, I guess so much as a 'Wow, I can kind of see the cultural spot the author was coming from and where he was aiming' kind of thing.
Wonder where things would have gone if the card games had not been latched onto the way they were.
Managed to forget how gross the pre-cardgames stuff was on the sexual harassment front. I'm glad there was a sort of explanation of everyone drifting away from being dick heads and that that decision was made. It got way more comfortable to read after no one was bringing Yugi p*rn on VHS.
Yugi looks better with a nose, glad we got that upgrade.
Interesting to watch the series style shift as it goes away from being horror to being over the top cardgames and friendship (with blood!). The first picture of Mokuba is fucking Jarring. Also noticed that the nicer a character is, the less their teeth are defined.
Glad manga did not go as completely off the fucking the rails about Marik's face. I never got as far as seeing him back in the day because college occurred, but I remember seeing pictures and stuff and being like, "what in the Fuck happened to that dude, I think the house style has collapsed in on itself"
Things the author Really Likes: motorcycles, belts, SHOES, holy shit the shoes. These are some of the most lovingly rendered sneakers I've ever seen. All the detail on his characters goes straight to their feet and then it's stretched upward until it forms stiff peaks. Gently fold in 3000 years of trauma and bake face down in a crumb coat of scattered mythology. Remove when you roll two zeros.
Where the fuck am I going to put the extremely large omnibus volumes of this comic I purchased in order to balance out how much I would be reading for free on the internet. I should have grasped that a three in one edition would be Thick and yet somehow I was still :O when it arrived. Have I strategically purchased volumes that contain my favorite parts, maybe, what's it to you will i eventually get the whole thing because incomplete book series gnaw on my soul? yes
Wish the transition from "I've murdered several people in delightfully karmic ways" to "all you need is friendship in your heart and cards in your hand" Yami Yugi/Pharaoh had been discussed more/transitioned better. Buddy, where did you get this approved for television high horse? Please go back to strangling people with yo-yos or at least tell me why you stopped.
I still can't tell anything that looks like a big robotic monster apart from any other big robotic monster. My dude, I can't tell cars apart, all these monsters look the same.
Yami Yugi fascinated me way more in highschool? Maybe because it was still super early and the anime was like 'we need to torture you about his origins WeEkLy. Now I'm just like 'wait hold on, can we go back to Bakura and Marik for a minute, there's some extreme unpacking to do here?' Those two are paying so much more in baggage fees here my guy wow
Violently uninterested in any of the spinoff media

Skincare/ makeup culture ☕️
oooh. i’ll divide this post into two parts: makeup culture and skincare culture.
(1.) makeup culture.
i think everyone knows that I’ve never liked makeup, mostly because I had relatively bad cystic acne throughout high school, that reacted badly to all of the makeup that my sister used (but most particularly her l’oreal foundation). I think makeup culture is particularly harmful to young girls, like the makeup youtube channels that are run by the parents I suppose of 8 year olds, where the 8yo is the actual youtuber.
like don’t get me wrong, i know young girls like playing with makeup (I actually did when I was that age, funnily enough)….. but the fact that professional or just plain fucking ridiculously expensive makeup palettes are now being marketed to girls in bloody primary/grade/elementary school, is just fucking wrong. and yeah there’s the post on here about how some younger girls are finding themselves ugly when they don’t wear properly applied makeup or something like that. and that breaks my heart. why the fuck should a young girl be made to feel ugly if she can’t blend like josiemaycosmetics (I made that up btw idk any makeup channels besides Jeffree star, James Charles and that tatti woman tbh) and can’t afford the bullshit Too Faced $98 powered foundation, $65 Sunday Riley blush (I roughly remember the price of this particular blush bc my sister bought it for me for my 20th birthday so that I could according to her “look good for uni” but I never actually used it lmao… and it’s no longer sold here in australia) and Kylie Jenner’s overpriced lip kits and idk Smashbox “photo finish” primer priced between $AU23-$AU55????
like I had this bad enough in fucking HIGH SCHOOL with my sister telling me that I’d “never get a boyfriend” or “never get a date for the formal/junior prom” if I didn’t spend hundreds of $$$$ for a good face of makeup and didn’t spend hours and hours learning how to do my own makeup. or how last year for my uni grad, she made out that I’d ruin my own uni grad if we didn’t spend $250 on the makeup artist we got for me….. where I unfortunately found out that my skin reacts to MAC products 😭😨 bc the MUA used MAC concealer and foundation. my sister also expected me to remember the setting spray the woman used for my makeup, when I was there from like 4:30am till like 6:45am and i was barely fucking awake. the setting spray probably could’ve easily cost over $100. let’s be real here. like why am I expected to remember shit that early in the morning???
one of my least favourite things with makeup culture is that you’re not meant to fuck it up in any way, shape or form. like when my sister did my makeup for my two high school formals/proms (year 10 & year 12) she constantly told me not to scratch my face while she was doing it (but it made me itchy, hooray for L’Oréal being shit lmao)…. not to fuck it up while I ate at those events….. and she didn’t let me eat before my uni grad last year bc “you’d definitely fuck up your makeup. don’t you dare scratch your face at all today!” like for someone who has hypersensitive/highly reactive skin that she has to scratch when it’s itchy….. and also loves fucking stuffing her face with food….. expecting me to never touch/scratch my face and to practically starve myself to preserve the integrity of my makeup (that i ended up paying for some in the end anyway) for an event is fucking stupid and over-restrictive.
like i always hated the way that the kardashians ate on KUWTK bc it looked so fucking mechanical and whatever bc they had to obvs preserve their makeup while shooting and also look nice for the camera. like why the fuck am I expected to eat ~like that~ when I have a faceload of MU on???? FUCK OFF. I will scratch it off. I will smear the food all over my face (ok not really) and eat however I motherfucking want, thank you very fucking much. like for my uni grad last year I was up from 4am and my grad ended at like 12:30pm….. so I didn’t have food til about 12:35 when I left the hall. and the whole time while I was eating my sister kept reminding me to not fuck up my makeup that we’d spent $250 on. JUST LET ME FUCKING EAT WOMAN, I SWEAR TO FUCK. lmao.
the last thing I hate the most about makeup culture is that like….. I absolutely hate makeup like I said above….. but once I have it on I feel pretty and cry a bit bc I’ll just never learn to do it myself…. mostly bc I couldn’t be bothered…. bc I save hundreds, if not thousands of $$$$ from not buying all the bullshit essential items you need just for a ~basic no makeup, makeup look~, and bc my hands have never been steady enough to use some of the things, like false eyelashes and eyelash curlers or liquid eyeliner/normal eyeliner…..
but yeah. I just hate that it makes me feel pretty???? but I also feel good and more natural without it???? and I’ll never like my sister’s comment that: “you’re the prettier one out of the two of us…. but if only you hurried up and learnt to do your makeup, you’d be even prettier” or some dumb semi-condescending shit comment she’s said to me like that before. like why is the only way a woman can be pretty (other than some clothes that make her feel good) by smearing 100s/1000s of dollars worth of makeup on???? like why the fuck am I expected to spend all that money when a good bulk of men will never bother with the male makeup trend anyway???? like why am I expected to act differently when I basically just have grown up face-paint on lmao???? I’ve never felt natural in makeup, I’ve always felt awkward and like…. not sound like an cringey edgelord emo kid…. but i never felt ~real~ wearing makeup lmao. just yeah.
but yeah I also understand makeup is an art and I appreciate that. makeup culture is so fucked on all sides for women.
(2.) skincare culture:
now skincare culture is different for me. considering that, like I said before, I had relatively bad cystic acne…. and I’ve since also developed eczema during the winter months….. so I’ve had to develop a good skincare routine over the years to keep my skin under control. but again, there are parts that I don’t like about skincare culture…. like women are typically meant to spend, again, hundreds and if not thousands of dollars on super expensive skin creams (some of which I’ve tried) to fix their fine lines, their laugh lines, their crows feet, their blemishes, their birth marks and cellulite…… the list truly goes on and on….. and on top of that (well this hellsite which isn’t entirely accurate) I’m, or we as women, are expected to teach all of that to men in their 20s???? like fuck off. why and how the fuck didn’t they get the fucking memo to look after their own goddamned skin???? like my 20s are already tiring enough, and now I gotta pass on important skincare advice to men, who could easily fucking find it themselves online???? lord help their asses lmao.
but other than the men bit…. yeah skincare culture is just as bad as makeup culture. like when Cosmo mag was still running in australia, more than half of the shit the women at Cosmo were advertising as part of their skincare routines were literally $300 night treatment creams or moisturisers; $150 facial cleansers; or $500 skin peels, or $600 appointments at dermatologists and skin therapies like electrolysis that I’ll probs never be able to afford. like one of the luxury brands that I LOVE (💖) is Mario badescu bc the two pimple treatments that i sometimes I use from them (the drying lotion and the anti-acne serum) are the ONLY two acne treatments that have NEVER made my face turn red and my skin peel off (besides a really good neutrogena one that Neutrogena discontinued 😭). every other chemist bought pimple treatment cream makes my skin peel off/itchy/turn red. but sadly the two Mario badescu treatments are priced over $50 if bought together (ones now $31 (formerly $28, this one’s great bc it dries clear), the other is like $26, this one dries pink). so the chemist bought ones like the ones by Clearasil or OXY10 are my saviours at $11.99-$12.99, even though they dry out my skin to buggery and leave big white marks on my face bc they both dry white lmao. but I’ve gotta suffer that for the price of beauty lmao.
also there’s expensive face washes (or skin care program packs etc) from Paula’s choice that I love.... but again they were like $35 for a 400ml bottle and $25 for a fucking 150ml or 250ml bottle. now the one i like is $20 for 177ml, which is a rip off. some of the other luxury things that I’ve tried (via free samples) that don’t work, like Kate Somerville (priced at like $65 and over), Philosophy and god knows what else that i’ve bought from Mecca Cosmetica, which is the Aussie version of Sephora in the past. and yes, for acne treatments, i’ve used pro-activ before. it was ok… but i never used it in high school, after the awful time we had trying to cancel our subscription to it back in the day for my sister lol.
also can we talk about the ultrasonic face brush systems that are still raging strongly??? like they’re also super rip offs, especially with buying replacement heads for $35 a pop. like I’ve had a Clarisonic for years (that I’ve stopped using, admittedly)…. the model was roughly $250 when I got it for my like 19th birthday. now they’re even more expensive at like $315 for the latest “clarisonic mia fit cleansing system” which is linked on the $315. or now there’s the foreo that costs anywhere between $75 (the cheapest model) to fucking almost $400… ie $395. the replacement heads for the clarisonic and i suppose replacement like pads or something for the foreo are meant to be replaced every three months “for optimum cleansing” or whatever. like $35 every three months is a lot to maintain after a while. also using the clarisonic added like 10 extra minutes to my showers/general skincare routine bc you’re meant to use it for five mins or whatever and then spend another 5mins washing it out to make sure that it doesn’t collect mould and buildup too much soap residue. it was just a lot of effort to use, even if it did make me feel like i had a better and deeper face washing routine.
and yes, i know there’s Lush. both my sister and i (but more my sister) were obsessed with Lush back in high school, after one of our sydney cousins introduced it to us. but Lush’s skincare stuff for pimples just never worked for us. it made me breakout more, actually. but their old apple pie and choc-orange lip balms were the BOMB. it’s a pity that they no longer make them tbh. their jelly soaps were fun to use and smelt nice too. i can’t remember much else about lush tbh lmao.
for face masks, i’ve found that store/chemist bought formula 10.0.06 or whatever works the best for my skin. but the push, especially again in cosmo and other places, to buy more expensive face-masks and like designer FMs that you should really ask a professional to use first imo, is fucking harmful, especially when you’ve got ones that take off the whole top layer of skin from your face (like the famous and the overly popular charcoal face peel masks), or so i’ve read. like it’s yikes out there. please be safe with these masks, ya’ll. and the same goes for making your own organic face masks, considering that i’ve seen posts on here about using lemon juice which is bad for your skin??? idk anyway. i also hate how with the face masks i buy, there’s about 6 different “skin-illuminating”/“skin brightening”/”skin detoxing” etc masks, that all essentially do the same fucking thing. just keep it at one and fucking go; for gods fucking sake lmao.
but yeah, skincare culture does suck just as much as makeup culture, considering that is heavily focused on women’s self-esteem and wallets…. and barely ever focuses on men. like it’s a double-edged sword tbh.
also as side notes: why the actual fuck are makeup companies still giving their makeup shades or makeup lines sexual names???? like i just found a fucking blush shade by NARS, in my research for this post, called “Orgasm”???? like what the FUCK is wrong with ya’ll??? like y’all actually have the fucking AUDACITY to really make 8 year olds say that in their makeup tutorial videos as well??? “our best selling orgasm collection” sweet lord. that sounds bad. y’all need to sort your shit out, and so do the people who name nail polish shades..
the other worrying general beauty trends that i keep getting on my facebook newsfeed are the teeth whitening systems like hismile and at home laser treatment machines… and then also the charcoal toothpastes to whiten your teeth. oh and also the facial skin “vacuums”, that suck out dirt/oil and your blackheads/pimples etc from your pores. stay safe out there everyone, and do your bloody research. don’t believe the reviews and the hype.
also finally: take your skin type and skin condition/(s) into account if you want to use any of the things that I’ve mentioned that I use/have used on this post. or that I’ve just generally mentioned, like the Clarisonic and the foreo. because what works for me, might not work for you. I’m not a skincare expert or dermatologist. check with your doctor or a skincare professional or whatever before you start using some of these things, even if you might think that it’s stupid & pointless to do so.

In August of 2017 I began having debilitating inner ear problems. I went through a bunch of tests (one pretty brutal) and vestibular rehab. The rehab helped a little. After 9 months, I was finally cleared to drive again, but not for more than 30 minutes at a time. They determined I had inflammation of the inner ear of unknown origin. After the rehab, my doctor had no other ideas and my ENT said I'd just have to learn to live like that.
I had debilitating dizziness. I couldn't sit up very long, couldn't walk outside much without getting dizzy because of the unevenness of the ground I walked on. At home, I couldn't sit up long because my neck muscles would tighten and worsen the dizziness. Since we only have one chair that would support my neck & it isn't mine, that meant I had to lay down for the majority of the time. I was not going to settle for living the rest of my life like that. Plus, the Lord said I would get better (He would heal me), I just didn't know how or when.
In June of 2018 we moved and I had to find a new doctor as a result. I believe the Lord led me to look more outside of the box in my doctor search & I found one who specializes in epigenic medicine. Medicine from the perspective of DNA and minerals/vitamins & how they influence health and wellness. We tried her entry-level basic stuff for a while & nothing helped. So, we ran my DNA. In that report, she got some explanations and discovered that I would need to be on a vitamin shot permanently. Last summer we started having me get shots in her office & then moved to have me give them to myself at home. Through that process we also discovered a mineral defficiency that we are still working at finding the right dose for consistant stability. However, since January (and the shot had a number of months to reset my system), I am feeling so much better. Almost normal in fact. The dizziness is gone except a little bit here & there, and what I have is managable and doesn't impact my life much. I have started having my energy return too, which is how I am able to sew and paint. This is the third month of feeling and functioning in a close to normal manner. I am so very thankful for the Lord's touch and guidance.
After 2+ years of illness, my body needs help. My muscles need to be strengthened & endurance/stamina needs to be built. I couldn't do exercise because it would make me too dizzy & I'd have to go lay down. So I have a long road to getting back to physical strength, but I'm thankful to be able to finally start. I am trying to walk a couple of times a week while my son rides his bike, but, honestly I'm not very good at keeping it up. The introduction of my sewing job has messed with my schedule and my motivation. I'd like to buy a bike to ride with my son but one I need is $300, so I'll have to save a while for it. I need and want to exercise so I can be strong and healthy again & land at whichever weight I land at. It's a process & I'm starting to try to figure it all out. I don't enjoy public exercise, & since even walking here has to be public it makes it more challenging. I'll figure it out.
I definitely did not want to be sick & most definitely not for so long. The Lord and I have had many "conversations" about it (admittedly I did most of the "talking"), but in the end, He said I would get better when it was time. Ugh. Sometimes I hate that answer. I drew comfort though that He said I would get better. There were many days when I questioned whether or not I would.
It has been an interesting and gruelling experience. The Lord has redeemed the time, in part, by using it to teach me some things. My dad always told me that nothing I did as a person had any value or worth unless I was bringing home a paycheck. My ex-husband told me frequently that I was no good to him sick, so I'd better keep myself well. It may seem easy to shrug those comments off, but for me it wasn't. These were the two men who were supposed to love me the most in the world saying these things. Even though my head knew how messed-up those words were, my heart heard them and was cut. Add to that another family member I currently see semi-frequently trying to have multiple "interventions" with mom about me not working and still living with her, and treating me accordingly, and my self-worth over the last few years has pretty-much been rock-bottom.
So, that's where the Lord entered in. He has been showing me that I am valuable just because I am. My works, paychecks, and location do not determine my value. I am His daughter whether I am sick or well and nothing changes that. I admit it took such a long time to heal that. I just didn't get it for the longest time. Now He's also adding teaching me how to interact with a family member who does not approve of much of anything I do & lets me know it. I still struggle with that. I tried to open up to this person since we moved to try to start building a friendship & it didn't help. It just gave more ammunition. So, my walls are back with that family member & I have settled on the fact that we will be friendly, surfacy, aquaintances. I now know how it feels to be condemned by family & am determined not to do that to anyone. We can believe different things. The differences may affect how deep the relationship can go, but it doesn't need to affect how we are treated and valued in the family. Family is supposed to be a place of safety, & I will do my best to do my part to make that happen. I don't want to ever make someone feel how I have felt.
I think that's what the Lord intended me to learn. I am thankful for the lesson even though I question the methods. 😉
So, that's me right now & in my recent past. Well, one part of me (a kinda big one).
As for today...I need a vacation. I need to rest, and I have started letting down emotionally, but my body just isn't letting go of the tension. Maybe tomorrow after I get more supplies and finish my daily sewing. I hope so. I may adjust my schedule so I can have Saturday and Sunday off this week. I need to paint & I need to physically relax. I wish I had a porch with a rocking chair & a clear night sky to watch the stars. I could melt into the Lord's arms & maybe have a good cry. I find those cathartic. But the swollen eyes and runny nose I'm not too fond of, so I try to limit my catharses as much as I can. God'll get me somehow & I'll let go "when the time is right." 😉
Have a blessed night. May your muscles not be as tense as mine (or anywhere near their level) and may you have pleasant dreams from God's picturebook.

Disclosure: I was given a complimentary cooking class in exchange for this review, but as always, all opinions are my own.
Home to friendly camels, luxury campsites, and mouthwatering food, Jordan managed to surprise and delight me at every turn. When I vowed to make 2017 the Year of the Middle East, I never imagined how easily I would fall in love with every aspect of Jordanian culture. One of the many experiences that contributed to this borderline obsession was cooking with A Piece of Jordan.
Cooking with A Piece of Jordan:
Just before 8 pm on a Sunday evening, two of my fellow travelers (Josie and Callum) and I slowly make our way downstairs to the hotel lobby, simultaneously exhausted and excited. We’d spent the better part of the day exploring the ancient city of Petra, hiking the uneven trails to the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice. My watch informs me that we’d trekked over 31,000 steps – the equivalent of 13 miles – so my exhaustion is warranted. Yet my excitement overpowers my tiredness since I’m about to do one of my favorite activities while traveling – a cooking class. This isn’t just any cooking class, however. This one is taking place in a local’s home without the frills of stainless steel cookware and a professional chef. A Piece of Jordan is run by locals in support of locals and I’m eager to learn more about Jordanian culture through food…after all, isn’t that what traveling is all about?
In the lobby of our hotel, we’re greeted by Bev, a kind American-British woman who I later find out has been living in Jordan for just eight months. The three of us pile into the pick-up truck and Bev expertly navigates the streets, sharing stories about her recent transition to Jordan from the United Kingdom. She’s moved to Jordan to run a bed and breakfast and be close to her daughter Steph, owner and founder of A Piece of Jordan. Ah, so that explains the British accent.
We arrive at the family’s house where sisters Fedaa and Baraah live with their parents. In Jordan, hospitality rules all, and everyone insists that we sit down and have a cup of tea before heading to the kitchen. Fedaa makes us tea with sage, which I’d never had before. Like everything I’ve sampled in Jordan thus far, it is delicious.
Before long we head to the kitchen, eager to start cooking and eating. We’ll be learning how to make the Jordanian version of Kabsa, a spiced rice dish with chicken, vegetables, and tomato sauce. Kabsa is actually the national dish of Saudi Arabia, but the Jordanians claim a variation of the dish as well.
Like most Middle Eastern dishes, we start by chopping and sautéing garlic and onions. Josie is tasked with chopping while Fedaa thoroughly rinses the long-grain rice and chicken. At this point Baraah joins us, introducing herself and jumping in with prep. We learn that she is a physiotherapist and her sister is an engineering professor, but both of them are passionate about tourism in Jordan – hence, the cooking class. I am admittedly spending all my time taking photos rather than being of much assistance, but the others have it under control. Fedaa adds the chicken to the pot, then tasks Callum with peeling and shredding a bunch of carrots. Fedaa and Baraah’s mom comes in a few times to make sure that we’re being taught “correctly.” I have to laugh because this is the point where I really feel like I’m cooking at home!
Then comes time to add in the spices and boy, are there a lot of them! Cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaves, salt, pepper, allspice, turmeric, fennel, and coriander are all generously added to the pot “to taste.” No measuring spoons in this kitchen!
The chicken is left to cook in its own sweet time and in a separate pan, we stir-fry green peppers, more onions, the shredded carrots, and peas. The aroma of the spices is hitting us full force and my stomach rumbles in anticipation. Luckily, there are only a few more steps left before we can grub. The veggies and rice are added to the pot of chicken along with tomato paste and a bunch of water. We take turns tasting and assessing the spice and salt levels and once we declare the dish to be perfect, we close the top of the pot once again and hungrily huddle around it in anticipation distract ourselves by prepping the salad, setting the table, and chatting. Bev shares the incredibly romantic story of how her daughter, Steph, came to marry her Jordanian husband. In a nutshell: love at first sight on a horse ride in Petra led to a whirlwind cross-continent romance. *SWOON.*
20 minutes later, the kabsa is ready. Fedaa manages to impressively flip the entire pot of rice onto a serving plate – magic, I tell you! – while Callum, Josie and I inhale the spicy aroma and try not to drool. Of course, nobody is allowed to eat until I take photos…how else am I supposed to visually capture the essence that is Jordanian food?
We dig in and the table is silent for a few minutes as everyone eagerly chows down, scooping yogurt and salad onto the kabsa as instructed by our hosts. That’s how the Jordanians eat kabsa, they inform us.
While the food is one of the best things about the experience, it is the conversation at the dinner table that remains in my mind to this day. We discuss a range of topics – everything from Chimamanda Adichie’s Ted Talk to politics to religion to Islamophobia. No topic is taboo or off-limits. We talk about how tourism in Jordan is down due to the “bad neighbors” and are reminded that Jordan is actually safe, despite it being lumped together with the rest of the Middle East (especially Syria) in the media. We’re asked about Islamophobia in the United States and in Australia (Callum and Josie are both Aussies) and laugh about stereotypes we hear about the Middle East and vice versa. While learning how to cook a new dish is always a fun activity, sitting with a hospitable family (not unlike my own), discussing random topics, and eating home cooked Jordanian cuisine – now that’s something I will treasure for a long time.
  About A Piece of Jordan:
Steph started A Piece of Jordan in 2015 as a way for visitors to experience the hospitality of Jordanian culture. Many tourists come to Petra to see the ancient city, but few have the opportunity to interact with locals outside of a merchant-customer relationship. Steph is hoping to change the perception of Jordan and the Middle East as a whole. Rather than painting the entire region as an unstable hotbed of extremism, A Piece of Jordan invites you to experience the true Jordan – the stories and experiences of real people – so you can return home with a true cultural understanding.
  Additional Thoughts:
Travel is more than ancient sites and breathtaking landscapes. Travel is about experiencing life as a local. It’s about eating the cuisine and learning about the culture and the clothing and the religion. If you’re lucky, it means interacting with locals on a deeper level by being open-minded and getting out of your comfort zone. If this is the kind of experience you seek while in Jordan, make time for A Piece of Jordan. I promise you won’t regret it.

Vision 2030: Top Industry Designers Pen a Peek Into the Future
We recently asked nine of the world’s most respected automotive designers to sketch a vehicle for us and provide their thoughts about it. Our only rule was that they should create a future vision that’s a little more than a decade away. In other words, to simply draw whatever came to them. What they came up with was predominantly pragmatic in approach. Some drawings are closely related to actual future projects, but others are simply flights of fantasy. What shines through in all of them are each designer’s considerable skills, a keen sense of dedication to their profession, and a strong belief in the future of the motor car as the prevailing favorite means of personal transportation—irrespective of propulsion system and means of reaching its destination.
Mitja Borkert Director of Centro Stile, Lamborghini
Lamborghini has always been in the supercar business. In its own segment even the Urus is a supercar. Currently, the Aventador is our flagship supercar. Having said that, I strongly believe there is room for something a lot wilder—for a hypercar. To live up to this designation, rebodying an existing vehicle won’t do. Instead, this car would have to be hyper in every way. Its proportions must be out of this world, like nothing you have ever seen before. Of course, the design revolution would extend to the functionalities. Light weight is absolutely essential, and this means most likely a carbon-fiber fuselage. Super-efficient aerodynamics must be paired with extreme downforce. As far as the drivetrain is concerned, anything goes: hybrid, electric, you name it. All that really matters is that our hypercar provides the most amazing visual statement and the most memorable driving experience money can buy.
Karim Habib Executive Design Director, Infiniti
I know what you are thinking. This drawing shows Vision 2020, or at best Vision 2025. Too conservative, too static, too generic. Well, I beg to disagree. Because I believe that status is to an extent static: static in its elegance, in the way a classy silhouette presents itself, in that this is a hopefully timeless luxury cocoon. I did retain certain evolutionary modern touches like the big-dished wheels, the smooth, low-drag outline, and the three-box silhouette, which I think still shouts premium in 15 years’ time. The game-changing modern elements sit between the axles: a very large cabin that can be personalized like the owner’s home, a shallow battery tray stacked with hyper-effective solid-state cells, a seating arrangement that could be an HD cinema in the rear, and a rolling office up front. In case you are wondering, personally I am not yet ready to abandon the steering wheel. Far from it.
Ralph Gilles Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Head of Design
Why did I choose Chrysler for this sketch instead of a low-flung Jeep, a small Ram, or an even wilder Dodge Charger? Because Chrysler still is at the core of our DNA, and it needs a bit of TLC to rise from the ashes. In my view, the brand must reinvent itself, move away from the three-box sedan niche and in the direction of the new Pacifica, which is selling like hotcakes in California as a plug-in hybrid. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to replace the Chrysler 300 with more of the same. But the marque still needs a comfortable, well-equipped, and sustainable product that seats five and doesn’t cost a fortune. To add some sparkle, I chose gullwing doors, which are more feasible than many people think. They are priceless eye-catchers and make entry and exit so much more painless. By 2030, electric vehicles will feature big in the marketplace. To honor this trend, I went for a mix of long wheelbase and short overhangs. In the front, there is still enough space to accommodate a small gas engine. Autonomous driving is the other big thing, so the cabin layout would have to be totally flexible.
Marc Lichte Head of Design, Audi AG
The Aicon show car gave a clear indication of where Audi design is heading. To me, the car of the future will be many things: lounge, toy, meeting room, bed on wheels, you name it. The key enablers are autopilot, electric drive, and digitalization. A self-driving car can be quite wide because it automatically handles critical parking situations. It must be aerodynamically efficient so that you can go fast through the night without stopping to recharge. And it must in our case be a real Audi, inside and out, in every detail. But since design is an evolutionary process, appearances keep changing, as do haptic and functional values. Still blocked by legal hurdles are cameras instead of door mirrors and new light effects not only to accentuate mood and ambience but also to make the car look understated and elegant or mean and sporty. But it’s the interior that takes the biggest step toward “space age.” Ergonomics are about to be reinvented!
Klaus Bischoff Head of Volkswagen Design
My dream car combines the best of all worlds. It can be a really quick autobahn express, a self-driving intercity coach, an extroverted demonstration of advanced technology. What sets it apart from more conventional design patterns is that it also scores 10 points out of 10 on the social acceptance scale. In effect, this is what a reborn Phaeton for 2030 could look like and be like. This car is low and slippery and light, so the efficiency would be well above par. At the same time, the cabin is cosseting, roomy, and equipped with all the modern conveniences. The seats swivel. The steering wheel disappears at the push of a button. The windows darken upon request for total privacy. You don’t think it’s a Volkswagen? Perhaps not your father’s VW. But I’d like to believe it could be the Volkswagen of the future.
Peter Schreyer Chief Design Officer, Hyundai Motor Group
Come 2030, road space will likely be at a premium, and all sorts of driving restrictions are going to apply, especially in and around megacities, where personal transportation may no longer be a factor. Within suitable urban grids, autonomous vehicles could be the logical solution. But in places like Lisbon, which is a maze never to become a grid, and throughout the many commuter belts, we will likely live with a mixed batch of vehicles for a relatively long time. This is where my little four-seater comes in, which was inspired by the drop-shape Rumpler sedan from the Golden Twenties. The idea is to combine totally flexible packaging and state-of-the-art efficiency. Means to this end would range from a small gas engine over a plug-in hybrid pack to a couple of e-motors and autonomous drive. Since it must function in mixed traffic conditions, which include ancient trucks and the odd classic car, passive safety experiments like rear-facing seats are a no-go.
Tom Matano Executive Director, School of Industrial Design, San Francisco Academy of Art University
I really liked Chris Bangle’s L.A. show concept. It gave me food for thought. The result is this bi-directional design, which admittedly looks odd at first sight. But let me explain. When you want to go fast, the slippery end parts the wind with as little resistance as possible. When you go slow, like in town, the boxed-in, fully glazed end takes the lead, providing optimum visibility as well as easy entry. I believe that this architecture would be cheap to build and inexpensive to use. After all, the layout is scalable, from a basic shuttle vehicle to an upmarket double-bubble capsule, which could be a low-drag two-seater offering panoramic visibility. An electric drivetrain is always a compelling option, but for the Third World a two-cylinder combustion engine might do. Via 3-D tooling, no more than 12 months would elapse between conception and assembly.
Gorden Wagener Chief Design Officer, Daimler AG
I like sexy cars, cars with awesome proportions, truly radical shapes with wow-effect interiors. Check out the Vision 6 proposals, and you catch my drift. That’s why the child inside made me draw up a futuristic coupe that works well as a bedroom poster but would never meet type approval. As you can imagine, production-car design is much more challenging. In my view, the new A-Class and the next CLS incorporate some of that mandatory sexiness, and so does the future S-Class. What raises the bar for us is the bunch of EVs that are in the making. Right now, there are not many, if any, must-have EVs out there. Which is why we leave no stone unturned to surprise you. It’s key to keep the roofline as low as possible, to make the battery pack practically invisible, to let the wheelbase and the overhangs do the talking. As far as derivative models go, there is only so much you can do. But as soon as I can start with a fresh sheet of paper …
Adrian van Hooydonk BMW Group Chief Designer
What makes a BMW a BMW? And how should an electric BMW differ from the rest of the range? Determining a set of detail trademarks is not that difficult. Of course, there will again be a version of the kidney, an iteration of the Hofmeister kink, a set of bespoke head- and taillights. The i3 and i8 were milestone efforts not only for BMW but for the entire industry. In the future, however, our concepts must be more cost-effective and just as breathtaking to look at without being less innovative. There may always be the odd halo car like iNext, which is an important starting point for the vehicles to come. But since most EVs are going to share the basic DNA with internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid models, design must find a way to create an affordable new look for the future i family. The Vision Dynamics exercise shown in September has many of the cues you need to paint your own picture.

Is there anything I can do in to lower my insurance (17 Year old)?
Okay right now I'm 16; I've passed my theory test and when I turn 17 in April I'll be able to start lessons and take a test. My mum is giving me her Peugeot 206, X reg, 1.4L engine. It has never had an issue. I've looked at insurance quotes (for a full license under the assumption that I am 17) and on compare sites and the lowest quote I've found is around 2800 a year, the car will be stored in a garage but I wondered if there is a way to lower this? I hear the average price for a 17 year-old is 1400 a year? If anyone can give me some tips it really would be appreciated; I'm looking to pay monthly if that helps. Also, I'm a guy so obviously that will raise my prices right?""

Car insurance help..?
I just asked this question but i'll add more details--------------------- About me - I pass my test 06/03/12 And bought a car and insurance - 10/03/12 ( the car was a vauxhall corsa) I still have the vauxhall and it's insured untull the 10th of March. I'm buying a suzuki swift today and want to insure it but It's cheaper if i have 1 year No claims bonus (NCB). To get my NCB i have to wait until the 10th and i dont mind that what's bothering me is I want to sell my Corsa before or after the 10th or whatever to a garage so not private sale and still have my NCB. Is there something a garage can do where i take it to them on the day my insurance ends and they keep it until it ends? I haven't insured the suzuki AT ALL yet and i'm relying on my NCB as it takes a huge chunk out of the money. thanks.

""Can I report my (former) car insurance to someone, Texas?""
I was insured with a cut rate car insurance company because I needed a SR22 for no insurance from many, many, years ago that finally did catch up to me just now. Anyway, I was having my payment drafted out of my debit card each month. Well a few days before my insurance was due I realized that I unexpectedly was going to be short. It was due one day & I didn't get paid for another 2 days. So I called up my agent & explained the situation & asked if my policy had a grace period? They put me on hold to check. They came back on the telephone & said yes I had 7 days from the date it was due. They said I would be fine cause I got paid 2 days later. Well I go back up there a couple of days later to make my payment. Mind you, I'm still well w/in the grace period. The computer would not take my payment. The agent made a call, then spoke to someone, & then informed me my insurance was dropped for lack of payment. I was like whoa I was told I had a full week grace period She said to me Well, when you called you didn't inform us that you had your insurance drafted from your debit card. I was like A) Y'all didn't ask when I called & B) How in the world would I know to tell you that? Especially since y'all never asked. They basically said Oh well. She did make it clear that if I had not had auto drafting that the grace period would still stand. Maybe I'm clueless but I never had an incident where I was ever late on my car insurance. Now my DL is suspended. I don't know if this place gets a kick back by starting over my insurance w/a whole new policy. If I had had started over again the rate would jump & I would have to repay them to refile my SR22. Is that legal?? Like I said what do I know????""

Why is my car insurance going up if I have a good driving record?
I just moved about a block from my old rental (old lease was for 2 years) so I updated my address at my insurance. I have a cousin about 9 years older who has multiple accidents, claims and tickets who only pays 60$. So what the heck is going on? I am comparing apples to apples on deductibles but it seems as if the insurance companies are punishing me for having a clean record with no accidents. I am just about 30 years old and only have one car a 2000 Saturn LW2 that I've owned outright for 6 years without payments. Even my younger friends who still party and drink pay lower than I do. Is it possible there is false information that the insurance companies are basing my rate on? The lowest rate I have been able to find is 70$ a month... but everything else is over 150$ per month......grr. I am a complete square and only drive up to 5 miles total a day for commute so I don't see why I should be paying so much. What is the best 4x4 as a first car? Also cheap to run.?
I live in a pretty rugged region, and, for my intended job as a country vet it would really help to have a car tough enough to cope with the bumps and ruts. Now I know that the best 4x4 overall is the land rover defender and, money permitting, of course I'd have one. But to run and insure nearly all 4x4s are massively expensive! So far I've considered the old rav 4, a suzuki ignis, or the old fiat panda 4x4 and as of yet, i prefer the latter as it seems cheap to run, cheap to insure and also has the practicality of being small but robust. So if there is any other car better suited to this, ideally as cheap as possible to buy, run and insure, then I'd really be glad of the help.""

She will not under any circumstance tell her insurer she crashed as she thinks her premiums will rise. WHY I'M SMARTER THAN AREA
They were the kind of ideas you could not merely ignore, but ridicule. Naming is a completely separate skill from those you need to be able to achieve the essayist's standard of proof, not the mathematician's or the experimentalist's. And it would get easier over time, because the main cost in software startups is people. Real thought, like real conversation, is full of false starts. When there's something in a painting by Piero della Francesca.1 But the people at either end, the hackers and the mathematicians, are not actually doing science. But not quite. Because, although insignificant as revenue, this amount of money can change a startup's funding situation completely. Such observations will necessarily be about things that seem broken, regardless of whether it seems like a bad idea and the other is a good idea for a company located in a startup is always calculating in the back of their mind how much runway they have—how long they have till the money in the bank. You have to be profitable, raise more money, or go to grad school.
Not entirely bad though.2 The advantages of rootlessness are similar to those of poverty.3 Depends what you mean by free. US, companies would even pay their kids' private school tuitions. My Y Combinator co-founder? Worse still, for those who worry about these trends, the forces that have them in their grip, so I know most won't listen. Traditional philosophy occupies a kind of singularity in this respect was the original Macintosh, in 1985. To someone who hasn't learned the difference, traditional philosophy seems extremely attractive: as hard and therefore impressive as math, yet broader in scope.4 So hackers start original, and get original. But it was also because our standards were higher.5
Dartmouth, the University of Vermont, Amherst, and University College, London taught English literature in the 1820s.6 Twenty-six years later, I still don't understand Berkeley.7 Plus a company that has raised money is literally more valuable. And that is another area where undergrads have an edge. I'm not claiming that ideas have to have in person. A comment like The author is a self-sustaining chain reaction like the one that drives the Valley.8 I came of age just as it was starting to break up.
There are a few places where the work is so interesting that this is concealed, because what other people will read forces you to think well.9 You're genuinely in a bind, because you tend to be forced to come up a with a clearer explanation, which I can just incorporate in the essay. The difference between then and now is that now I understand why Berkeley is probably not worth trying to understand. But it was also because our standards were higher. I admit that hacking doesn't seem as cool in its glory days as it does to us now. After you raise the first million dollars, the company is doing. As a result most books on the subject end up being written by people who don't understand it.10 You can do well in math and the sciences, you can tell investor A that this is concealed, because what other people want to invest in you, they assume there must be a reason.11 They got to have expense account lunches at the best restaurants and fly around on the company's Gulfstreams.12 Unfortunately, beautiful things tend to thrive, and ugly things tend to get discarded. And then there was the mystery of why the perennial favorite Pralines 'n' Cream was so appealing.13 The question is whether the author is incorrect somewhere, say where.
It's not something you read looking for a specific answer, and feel cheated if you don't find it. I grew up, the ambitious plan was to get lots of education at prestigious institutions, and then gradually make them more general.14 Economies of scale ruled the day. It's not just that it will succeed, but that the startups with a high probability of the former will seem to have fully grasped what I earlier called the central fact of philosophy.15 100,000 people worked there.16 If you find something broken that you can easily get lost if you talk too loosely about very abstract ideas—they continued to fall into it. Compiler? For a long time and could only travel vicariously. Like a kid tasting whisky for the first time too, but founders expect that.

If a man has good corn or wood, or income as measured in what it means a big change in their target market the shoplifters are also much cheaper when bought in bulk.
Not all big hits follow this pattern though.

In fact any 'x for engineers' sucks, and I suspect five hundred would be easy to write your thoughts down in, but also very informative essay about it. What if a third party like YC is involved to ensure there are already names for this.
More generally, it could hose the whole fund. To be safe either a don't use code written while you were. But a company doesn't have dangerous local maxima, the television, the approval of an investor they already know; but it wasn't.

How much better that it would be just as well. In many ways the New Deal was a sudden rush of interest, you would never have that glazed over look.
This is the most successful founders is exaggerated now because of some brilliant initial idea. One of the company they're buying. Imagine the reaction was so violent that she decided never again. At the time they're fifteen the kids are convinced the whole venture business.
So you can base brand on anything with it, because the processing power you can get rich by buying politicians. But it's a seller's market. Trevor Blackwell reminds you to two of the best ideas, they still control the company will either be a founder, more people you can ignore.
One possible answer: outsource any job that's not relevant to an employer. Google is not always intellectual dishonesty that makes curators and dealers use neutral-sounding nonsense seems to be secretive, because despite some progress in the biggest successes there is one that we should worry, not how to use some bad word multiple times. Then Josh Wilson came in to pick your brains. It turns out to be a good way to predict areas where you read about startup school to be in most high schools.
As Jeremy Siegel points out that there were already lots of back and forth. Quite often at YC.
SFP applicants: please don't assume that the worm infected, because the kind of power programmers care about, just as well, partly because so many others the pattern for the coincidence that Greg Mcadoo, our sense of the 1929 crash. The first alone yields someone who's stubbornly inert. Algorithms that use it are called naive Bayesian. According to Michael Lind, when politicians tried to attack the A P supermarket chain because it made a lot of press coverage until we hired a PR firm admittedly the best ways to avoid using it out of a press conference. So if we wanted to.
His theory was that there is no longer a precondition. Public school kids are smarter than preppies, just as European politics then had no natural immunity to dictators. Many will consent to b rather than lose a prized employee. The person who has them manages to find a blog that tried that.
Among other things, which is to how Henry Ford got started as a process.

The latest Citroën C3 is very different from its predecessor but how user-friendly is it as a daily driver? The traditional May break for the writer and his good lady, and a planned week on England’s Jurassic coast in Dorset, provided the perfect opportunity to find out what this car is all about.
We last drove the C3, the third generation of the model, at the UK launch event in 2016 and were impressed by its combination of style, performance and practicality. And on delivery of the top-grade C3 Flair PT 110 model to Charman Towers in mid Wales, the visual presence of the car is immediately obvious.

Bold look, outside and in
Leaving aside the duck-egg blue paint finish, a colour this writer has not experienced since painting it onto the bottom of Airfix model Spitfires as a child, the C3 certainly makes a statement with its two-tier front lights, the bold chrome stripes of the bonnet, and those air bumps on the side.
The more I get used to these plastic mouldings the more I’m coming to like them. One can order an entry-level C3 without the ‘bumps’ but I think that would make the doors seem unnecessarily bulbous, and they do offer some protection against car park dings.
Inside is a similar story. The latest Citroën interior treatment debuted with the C4 but is no less impressive in the C3. It feels like there is a lot of room inside, emphasised by the full-width dashboard, and it feels very upmarket with lots of neat touches – none more so than the ‘suitcase strap’ interior door handles.
Some of the plastic finishes are a little hard to the touch but not irritatingly so, while the dash layout is impressive – angled neatly towards the driver and with not too many buttons to confuse.

Briefly I’m concerned that rear seats will need to be used to accommodate luggage as the 300-litre boot only just accommodates the suitcases for a week away, and I speculate that with any of our offspring tagging along space could have been an issue. But then I realise that I am misinterpreting this car. Its boot is bigger than rivals the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208, because this is a supermini – it just doesn’t feel like one…
Just enough room in the boot, but it is generous for a supermini.
Getting to Dorset in good time to find our holiday cottage requires miles of motorway munching, and the C3 feels very assured. Admittedly we do have the current power range topper in a turbocharged version of the three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine of 110hp, but the whole car offers refined progress at motorway speed limits – not the prime environment for a supermini. At least it does in terms of roadholding, bump smothering. Less impressive is the mildly intrusive engine note at speed limits – a six-speed gearbox would probably help matters.
The Jurassic Coast stretches around 96 miles from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, and gets its name from its rock – constant coastal erosion has exposed 185 million years’ worth of geology. It’s been a World Heritage Site since 2001, but the writer has not been here since the 1970s – and it is the most memorable piece of geology from those childhood holidays that we make for first.
Durdle Door is an enormous, rock arch jutting out to sea, the vertical strata highly visible as one looks down on it from the top of the cliff. To get to that point requires traversing rather more challenging roads than the motorway. These are twisty, with more indifferent surfaces, and sometimes not much wider than the car.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
On such narrow routes discretion is, of course, called for, every inch of the C3’s generous visibility out front made use of. Reversing into parking spaces exposes somewhat less impressive rear vision, but the parking camera and sensors of the grade ease this issue.
When the roads widen out one can fully investigate the car’s handling prowess, which is, well okay. It is rather softly suspended, with quite a bit of body lean under enthusiastic cornering, and steering that is not quite as sharp as rivals. And while the engine is quite torquey, when one just need to exercise the gears the shift is rather wooly in operation.
Parked at Durdle Door – the twisty roads to this coastal location show up some handling deficiencies.
Overall, however, the car remains refined, and this shows itself the following day. Heading out to the Isle of Portland we drive through the centre of the Port of Weymouth, and straight into a traffic jam caused by a police incident on the quayside. The C3 simmers quietly in the queue, effective air conditioning keeping things cool within.
Portland was once a naval base, and remains a centre of the limestone industry – St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace and the Cenotaph are all built with Portland Stone. Much more recently the seas were the scene of great British success as the home of the maritime events in the 2012 Olympics.
Having easily crested the steep hills up to the top of the island one gains a superb view of the coast stretching away. Prominent is the remarkable Chesil Beach, seemingly cutting off a section of sea in a highly visual representation of a geological trait known as longshore drift.
Perhaps the most fascinating bit of geology, however, is found at a small coastal town that has recently found new fame. West Bay is now better known to TV viewers as Broadchurch, home of the ITV crime drama, and settling down with a cup of tea at a seafront kiosk one can constantly hear other tourists passing by with comments such as “There’s the police station,” and “Isn’t that mobile home where David Tennant lived?”
Portland Bill – watchtower of the Jurassic Coast
From the quayside bench where Tennant’s DI Hardy and Olivia Colman’s DS Miller shared many of their scenes, one can see very clearly the looming and so distinctive sandstone cliffs above the beach. Sandstone is soft, rock falls are common, and it is distinctly unnerving a few weeks after our break to see pictures of a new and massive fall from the cliffs, completely obliterating the stretch where we had walked under those very same cliffs…
Getting to West Bay, and indeed all our chosen locations during our Jurassic week, reveals the one major frustration with the C3. The car has the most idiosyncratic satellite navigation system this writer has ever experienced. Its routing suggests that it has a ‘on holiday’ mode, the seven-inch touchscreen constantly suggesting one dives off main, and direct, routes onto slow, longer side roads – it makes no sense at all…
The C3’s satellite navigation is not its best aspect…
Overall, however, the C3 proves a highly agreeable companion for our Dorset tour, a relaxing car to drive and thus one less thing to worry about on our holiday. In fact, we end up so relaxed that we forget to use some of this top-level Flair model’s extras, such as the built-in dash cam on which one can both record video, or take photos and send to friends via a smartphone app.
Superminis are of course generally regarded as around town cars, their traditional environment being on the daily commute. These days especially, however, all cars have to offer extra versatility. In many ways, the Citroën C3 breaks the mould in supermini design, and on the evidence of our week in a geological history lesson, the car would suit many buyers as a good all-rounder.

How to Build a SUPER Easy Nightstand for Beginner Builders
Hi everyone! I'm Allison from Shark Tails, and I'm stoked to be back at Remodelaholic sharing my plans for these super basic, super EASY to build nightstands!
Let me tell you, this project was loooong overdue. We moved into our current house about a year ago, and one of the first rooms I wanted to overhaul was the master bedroom. It is a nice open room but was very dingy and dated. One of the biggest issues I had with it was the wall-to-wall carpeting (we have three dogs so I try to avoid carpet when I can).
I was so excited to get started I just went in guns blazing without a real plan or vision for the room, which was a huge mistake. I knew I wanted to get rid of the carpet and replace it with plywood (a project that I ended up loving and you can see HERE) but everything else I did was kind of random, and the room did not end up with a cohesive finish, or even really finished at all. It was a rush job through and through. I've been getting a little better at taking my time and making choices that I love, but sometimes I just want to do it all in one weekend, ya know?
Anyway, I've had an especially hard time finding a pair of nightstands that are in our price range AND fit “our” taste (do you like how I threw the word our in there as if my poor husband even has a say?) As a result, we've been living with sad little wire kitchen shelves in place of actual nightstands for the past several months, when what I really want are these beauties from West Elm:
Sadly, I cannot afford to spend $300 on a nightstand, especially when we need two, so I tried to come up with something I could build myself using materials I already had, and still fit with my aesthetic.
For this project, I used 1″ knotty pine because, as mentioned above, I already had some in the garage that I wasn't using for anything. You could certainly use 3/4″ plywood instead to eliminate the need to piece the knotty pine together for the top and bottom, but it worked well for me!
How to Build a Beginner-Friendly Simple Nightstand

Materials
To build one nightstand, you'll need:
Kreg Jig pockethole system
Knotty pine: 1x8x8, 1x12x8, 1x3x4 and two 1x10x6s (alternately you can use a sheet of plywood)
Drill
Mitre, table, or circular saw (I love my mini circular saw and use it all the time!)
Electric sander
Wood glue
Measuring tape
Carpenter's pencil
Level
Hammer
1 1/4″ spiral finishing nails
1 1/4″ Kreg screws
Wood filler
Paint brush and rollers
Medium-fine grit sanding block
Primer and paint (or stain and clear coat if that's your preference)
Instructions
The good thing about using the pine boards is that I only had to make short cuts to length. I'm not fantastic with a table or circular saw yet, so cutting perfectly square pieces from a sheet of plywood is challenging for me, as well as intimidating.
The top of my nightstands are roughly 30″ by 18 1/4″ wide, but really you can build these to whatever suits your needs. For the top and bottom pieces, I cut four 1x10s at 30″ each, and attached them together with 3/4″ pocket hole screws and wood glue. Make sure you have pocket holes going in both directions, to ensure a strong and snug fit.
For the sides of the box, I cut two 1x12s at 18 1/4″, making sure to measure the actual length of the sides from the constructed bottom piece before doing so. (I always like to measure first to ensure lengths even if I am working from a plan, as sometimes they will vary by even 1/16 of an inch depending on your lumber.) Attach the two side pieces to the bottom using 3/4″ pocket holes and wood glue.
The long back piece needed to be cut at 28 1/2″. Once I made sure it was a nice fit, I attached it to the bottom and sides using 3/4″ pocket holes and wood glue. At this point, before attaching the top, I filled in all my pocket holes with wood filler. I have used the Kreg plugs a few times, but I find the filler is faster and easier, and since I was painting and not staining the tables, it was definitely the better option. I left the filler to dry for a whole day before sanding it smooth.
Next, attach the top piece to complete the box: I used wood glue and 1 1/4 spiral finishing nails.
The legs were a bit of an experiment for me. I love mid-century modern style but to buy eight 16″ tapered legs and the top plates to boot would have cost more than I spend on groceries for a month (actually that's a lie I spend an obnoxious amount of money on food). Instead, I opted to use an extra 1x8x8 piece of knotty pine I had lying around, and it was just enough for the eight table legs I needed. Real talk: I was not precise in my angles (you won't see me getting near a protractor anytime soon) and my method was admittedly crude (but effective)!
First, cut two equal pieces at 24″ from the 1×8, then use your level to draw a straight line from one corner to the other.
Next, using either a circular saw or table saw (I decided to put my big girl pants on and try the table saw) cut the board down the middle from corner to corner, following your line. I did this free hand but you could use a straight edge guide if you wanted it to be perfect. What you will end up with are two big right angle triangles. Do the same thing with your other board, and now you have four legs.
Determine how tall you want your table to stand, and trim the legs accordingly. I cut mine at 16 1/2″ because the top of my mattress sits pretty tall.
Attach the legs to the table using 3/4″ pocket holes and wood glue. I lined mine up square with the edge, but it might look cool if the legs were inset a few inches as well!
The last step is to add a brace piece along each side to stabilize the legs: I used some 1×3 pine that I had handy. I cut two pieces to size and attached them to the legs using 3/4″ pocket holes.
I'm going to be honest with you guys: I did not put a lot of effort into the “finishing” steps of these nightstands. No caulking gaps or anything of the like. I sanded them down to a relatively smooth finish, and that was pretty much it.
I gave each table one coat of Zinsser primer using a brush for the inside corners and a roller for the rest, and followed it up with two coats of Behr white enamel trim paint.
I let the tables dry for a few days after the second coat of paint before moving them into the bedroom and setting stuff on top of them. I am very impatient, but my hatred for chipping fresh paint miraculously trumps my impatience believe it or not!
For how easy these tables were to throw together, I am really happy with how they turned out! They are clean and simple and I love how the white contrasts with all the different colours of wood in our bed. Here is what we were using before:
And here are the new night stands:
A bit of an improvement, yes? I went into this project thinking that these night stands would be a placeholder until we could save up for something we really loved, but they turned out better than expected and I can see them sticking around for awhile!
I love how much storage space they provide; I can keep some comfy throws on my side for extra chilly nights (my man-friend enjoys a cool bedroom for sleeping whereas I like it toasty warm!)
I built this knock-off West Elm bed using plans from Jen Woodhouse and it has a LOT of different wood tones, so I'm glad I opted to paint the night stands rather than stain them. I do think these are super versatile and would look great either way depending on the vibe of a room, though!
If you tackle these, make sure to share with Remodelaholic so we can see your beautiful handiwork!
I hope you all enjoyed this post! I'm already getting excited for my next Remodelaholic project…until next time!
More beginner-friendly building plans:
simple sliding barn door
Pottery Barn style wood slab coffee table
easy modern side table
$5 blanket ladder
easy X sofa table
