i think the biggest thing that gets me about rag dolly is like

how marcella, since shes young and cant grasp big concepts like death yet, kinda. envisions death as going through a door to another room and never coming back out. shes like 7 so the abstract thinking makes sense, especially after the trauma of losing her mother and her pet dog and bird within a short time of eachother.

she specifically sees death as her loved ones going through her closet door, so shes very adamant on like. No One Going Near That Door. her dad briefly goes to open it in the first scene and she bursts into tears and has a meltdown. because if anyone else opens the door then they'll also die. bc shes baby so she just doesnt kno how to deal w those feelings aAgh djssksjs ;_;

and knowing that the playwrights wife was a well known psychologist and had a hand in writing the musical (at least with marcellas character + integration of jungian dream theory), it kinda makes sense that its sometimes is a bit too. real.
