I rewatched The Butterfly Effect a couple weeks ago (or, rather, watched it all the way through for the first time because it was always on cable when I was a teen but I only saw it in pieces), and (a) it’s pretty solid (I really dislike it in terms of the messages it sends but I found it compelling), (b) I’m not surprised that it was critically panned (Goofy Sitcom Actor/TV Prankster in ACEs: the Movie would have been a hard sell at any time, but the mid-2000s was maybe the worst possible time), and (c) I’m surprised it made so much money (it’s so relentlessly depressing and everyone seemed to hate it so much at the time).

#I think if it was a pre-2000s movie it wouldn’t have been subjected to so much real-time mockery #and people would have just been like ah a grim teen sci-fi movie #(I know the main character is a college student but w/e)#it would have a cult following of some size #and the rest of the world would be like well that sounds weird and bad #if it had come out later #being about upsetting subject matter would have been a possible plus #rather than an automatic minus #it might’ve gotten a lot of flack for the execution #maybe valid and maybe by the world’s dimmest practitioner of buzzfeed feminist literary criticism #but the conversation would have started differently #look at promising young woman lol
