internship day 1:
get me out of here
#this was a horrible day#overchallenged by the sudden strangeness of the situation#entirely underchallenged by being given... no instructions and... nothing to do?#like if i hadn't actively started to go around and knock on doors the entire team would've just forgotten i exist#why the fuck am i here then? if you don't think up-and-coming journalists can do your work then don't employ any#like i am used to publish one text a day (sometimes one in two days or three in one day depending on size and timing)#and you tell me there is nothing i can do or help with#the utter strangeness of being sat in an office with a newspaper witht claus' portrait in there like a reminder of why i'm here#and then meeting the woman who contacted him about it#and she's treating you like a 6 yo. girl and gives you a stack of articles to read to “learn how to write”.#and hearing repeatedly “we talk to a lot of cool people here and we go to pretty awesome events - but you won't be doing that”#then why am i here#what is even more frustrating is that interns from other departments tell a completely different story#i'm dreading going back tomorrow and i cannot grasp how one of the biggest newspapers in the country can't integrate interns properly#i can only hope it gets better each day#munich

Mob! turtles au Turtles x fem! reader
Leo x reader
Summery: The turtles are 4 brothers who run the mob in New York and their territory is under threat since a serial killer (you) has taken up residence in the area. Bodies keep dropping and it’s being blamed on the turtles which is bad for business so they decide to do something about it.
Warnings: violence, mention of drugs and weapons, NSFW
((A/N I’m not a writer, I’m a dumbass with a dream to write some dark fiction so please save any nasty comments. Hope you enjoy))
__________________________
November in New York was always beautiful, the leaves become this vibrant burnt orange and scatter throughout the parks and roads, you can see your breath in the air and occasionally there’s fresh snow on the ground. Nothing quite tops that. You sit in your regular bar, Paddy’s, and take another swig of the beer sat in front of you. You’re sat close to the door so it gets a little chilly with the patrons walking in and out creating a cold breeze but you simply shrug your jacket on closer and ignore it.
The city is at a pivotal point with gang activity, the mob known as “the turtle boys” runs most of up town New York- selling guns and narcotics to lesser gangs. It’s a dangerous time you think to yourself as you shake off the four sets of eyes you can feel watching you from the corner. You finish your beer and stand to leave. Outside it’s dark and freezing, typical whether, you light up a cigarette, adjust your scarf and continue towards the ally that leads home leaving a swirling trail of smoke behind you; the end of the cigarette gleaming orange in the dim light.
You can hear the footsteps following you but you don’t quicken your pace. They’re free to do as they so please and have no idea who they’re messing with. Along with gang activity, New York has one other big problem at the moment: a serial killer. Their calling card? Strangulation. 7 bodies have washed up along the Hudson in the last 4 months all with the same abrasions around their necks from what the police suspect is barbed wire as well as stab wounds. You know it’s barbed wire, though. You’re the one who put them there.
The footsteps are gaining on you now and you stop in your tracks, take a deep inhale of your cigarette and turn to face them. You didn’t quite know what you were expecting to see but, the turtles boys wasn’t it. All adorned in beautiful, presumably expensive, suits they stare back at you with blank expressions but a slight look of worry in their eyes.
“Y/n L/n” the one in a blue suit calls to you. “you’re a hard girl to track down”
“laying low is my speciality. What can I do for you boys on this fine night?”
“cut the shit” the biggest one out of all of them cuts in. He’s wearing a black suit with a red handkerchief poking out of the pocket. Raphael you make a note to yourself. He’s going to be the hardest to take down. You smile sweetly.
“we can do this the easy way or the hard way” he finishes.
“do I look like an easy girl to you?” you turn on your heels and begin to run, if you can get them into the next ally way there’s a chance you can take at least one of the down before the others get to you, you think.
Out of breath and cursing never sticking to your resolution to do more cardio you make it to the next ally but the one you know as Michelangelo has gained on you and slams you into the brick wall on your right side.
“that’s no way to treat a lady” you say looking up at him, he grins, spits and decks you in the face. Everything goes black.
There’s a thumping in your head, you feel as though you have a concussion and your jaw aches like a motherfucker. Damn it you think to yourself, they’re more to handle than I thought. There’s some kind of sack over your head that has a sheer texture to it so you can sort of make out where you are. There are cupboards and you can hear the steady drip of water so a tap must be near by, you assume you’re in a kitchen. You try and move your hands but they’re bound behind your back, the same with your ankles. Motherfuckers. You reach into the back of your jeans, you knife is gone. They must have searched you, they’re more thorough than you gave them credit for. you shouldn’t have underestimated them, you’re the one who likes to be underestimated. Just a sweet little girl, wouldn’t hurt a fly; you’re a vegetarian for fucks sake, who would think of you as the ruthless killer that you are? you try and slide your arms under your butt to have them in front of you, maybe then you can get this bag off your head and see where you are. Suddenly, you hear movement
“She’s awake” one of them calls to the others. More footsteps and you know they’re all in the room with you. You feel the bag being removed from your head, some of your hair being pulled with it but you ignore the slight sting that it causes. You’re face to face with Leonardo who’s crouching in front of you
“Now” he begins “I think it’s time we get better acquainted, don’t you, y/n?”
“I thought mobsters were supposed to be sweet on women. They Cray twins, Al Capone, all real nice when it came to ladies. What gives?” you say to him.
“you’re no regular lady” he retorts. “We have sources that put you at the scene of 4 of the murders that have been going on recently and we just need to have a little chat about what you were doing there. We’d hate to have the wrong person”
you scoff. “Me? A killer?” you feign an innocent look. “Whatever are you talking about”
Leo stands up and you can really see his true height now. He’s an impressive man, about 6′4 and all muscle. That suit was really doing him some favours as well, you would water at the mouth but you had other priorities at this moment in time; staying alive being just one of them.
“what were you doing by the Hudson on September 6th when James Masters was killed” he asks
“Look, you’ve got the wrong girl. I wouldn’t kill anyone” you flash him your big doe eyes hoping that’ll score you some points with the big bad mobster. They wouldn’t really hurt a girl, would they? “I’m an art major at Columbia, I’ve got 2 brothers who need me” you try and summon tears but you just can’t do it so you settle for the odd sniffle instead “My mum calls me at 12 everyday and if I don’t pick up she’s gonna get worried”
A sharp smack flies across your face and you’re taken aback by the impact. You can feel liquid at the corner of your mouth and know that he hit you hard enough to draw blood
“Cut the act, what were you doing?” he repeated himself.
You take a moment to finally look around the room. There’s a table to your right with stacks of cash and guns on it as well as lots of tightly wrapped bags full of white power; cocaine you assume. The 4 turtles stand in front of you, Leo being closest, all with their arms folded doing their best to look intimidating. You laugh.
“I get the feeling begging isn’t going to work, huh?” you say
“Not today, sweetheart” the one who knocked you out, Michelangelo, replies.
“Well, would it please you to know that I was there to get rid of a body? That I’m the one who’s been ‘terrorising’ New York as the papers put it? or did I give that away too easily?”
“That’s not quite what we’re here about” the one in purple pipes up
“Oh no?”
“you see, James was an informant of ours and he had some…Information that could be very harmful to our organisation if it got out. And since he was tortured before he died, we want to know what he told you”
“let me see” you you paused for dramatic effect “I believe his last words were ‘no please stop, oh god no’. Does that have any significance to you?” you smile
Another slap. This one hurt worse and was making your already aching jaw hurt even more, you would definitely have a bruise if you made it out of this.
“looks like we’re gonna have to use the old school method” Leo states
“the old school method it is” Donatello agrees
He leaves the room for a moment and comes back in with a black bag which he opens on the counter. He takes out a white plastic sheet and some things that you can’t quite make out from the floor but they make a metallic twang on the counter when he puts them down. They’re going to torture me. Your heart sinks to your stomach. You aren’t a coward and you’re no stranger to pain, half of your victims put up a good fight and rough sex was prominent in your life, but you truly didn’t know any inside information about what the turtles operation held and there was no way they were going to believe you.
Donatello approached you, laying down the white sheet and shimmying it under your form so that it lay underneath you.
“look, guys…” you began “We don’t have to do it like this”
“A bit too late for that, don’t you think” Donatello replied as he pulled a scalpel from his pocket and pushes it down into your hand. You howl in pain and try and pull your arm away but his hand is already on your wrist keeping you in place.
“Just tell us what he told you” He states in an eerily calm voice
“He didn’t say an thing about you guys!” you bellow “I caught him tryna sneak date rape drugs into a girl’s drink and that’s why I killed him! It had nothing to do with you!”
They all look at each other and Donatello draws back.
“Even so” Leo began “He wasn’t the best at keeping secrets. I imagine he tried to make some kind of deal with you for his life”
“Yeah, that he would leave the city and never come back” They stare at you, unsure as to weather or not you’re lying. Mikey uses his arms to propel himself backwards to sit on the counter behind him; his legs swinging casually as he sits.
“So nothing about us?” he inquires.
Leo moves towards you, crouching down again so that he’s eye level with you; his suit hugging his muscles in all the right places. You decided to take a gamble.
“well…He did tell me one thing” you croon
“Go on” Leo almost whispers
Your hand was bleeding pretty badly at this point and a bead of bright scarlet blood dripped down between your fingers and on to the plastic sheet beneath you. If you wanted to live, you had to make them like you in some way. You lean in closer, almost nose to nose with the turtle’s leader.
“you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” you say in your most seductive voice. He smiles at you, not quite sure what to make of your comment.
“I’m not following, little girl”
“Oh come on. Haven’t you heard that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar? Give me what I want, and I’ll tell you whatever you need to know”
He stays crouched in front of you, still staring into your eyes trying to gage weather or not you’re serious. “Leave the room” he commands without even looking back at his brothers. They do as they’re told, Mikey sighing slightly as he hops down from the counter and Donatello picking up his black bag of torture gear on the way out.
“what do you have in mind?” his eyes are locked on yours and you’re so close you can feel his body heat from where you’re sitting. He truly was an amazing creature, all muscle and strength. It made you wet just thinking about what he could do to you. You place one of your still tied up hands on his knee and run it down his thigh until you’re close to his crotch and look back into his deep blue eyes
“Oh, you know. A little bit of hair pulling here, some biting there. Just fuck me raw basically” your forwardness gets you a raise of his eyebrows and his mouth forms into a bigger smile. He looks down and then back up at you and begins to untie the restraints around your ankles but leaves your hands bound. This is going to be good.
He runs his hands down your thighs and begins to undo the button of your jeans to slide them down your legs, you kick off your shoes to help him get them over your feet. His hands go straight for your underwear. This guy doesn’t fuck around you think to yourself. Underwear off, he trails kisses down your inner thigh until he reaches your sex and parts your lips
“you’re wet already? Naughty girl” he jokes and you can’t help but blush.
He moves closer and takes one long lick between your folds exciting a moan from the back of your throat. He’s good at it, too, swirling his tongue in devilish ways over your small bead and occasionally sucking at it too. He places one thick finger inside your wet entrance and begins to curl it in pace with his tongue. you’re barely hanging on at this point as your orgasm is coming fast. He looks up from between your legs while still using his hand to draw circular motions over your clit
“It’s ok, babygirl. You can cum for me”
With one final stroke of his tongue and his permission your orgasm rips through you bringing tears to your eyes but he isn’t done yet. Moving up your body he lifts your top and undoes your bra taking his time to suck and kiss at your nipples. It’s as though he can’t decide which one he likes best but you don’t mind his indecision. You can feel his teeth pull the soft tissue of your left breast into his mouth as he sucks creating a small purple bruise and you humm in pleasure. He kisses your lips hungrily, inserting his tongue into your mouth just enough to taste the cigarette he must have been smoking before you woke up and you love the taste. It’s so manly. You take your still tied up hands to cup his chin as he does so and then move them down to feel his torso, His reptilian skin so rough yet smooth at the same time and you can feel his muscles twitch beneath the surface in anticipation.
He trails kisses and bites down your tummy before grabbing your hips and flipping you over, your face hits the floor but you don’t mind; you were guaranteed to be man handled and he did not disappoint. With your exposed ass in the air you can hear him behind you undoing his flies and you want to badly to look back and see him but the not knowing almost makes it hotter-that is until you feel him at your entrance. He’s thick. Almost too thick for you, he’s gonna stretch you open for sure and you can’t wait. Just as you think this you hear him spit and his fingers are at your entrance again making sure your wet enough for him. In one long slow motion he inserts himself inside you, filling you completely to the point where you don’t know if you can take any more. He bottoms out and you sigh in pleasure. He pulls out a little and then thrusts back into you hard over and over again at a punishing pace. His hands are on your hips but he removes one to smack your ass as he’s fucking you.
“harder” you almost beg
“that’s it baby, take all of me” he moans to you
the feel of the cold tile floor beneath your face is a nice contrast to the burning heat in your core and you know you can’t hold on much longer. He reaches around your body to play with your clit while he’s still pushing in and out of you at an astonishing rate while he takes his other hand and pulls at your hair forcing you to look up.
“Leo, I’m going to-I’m gonna” you practically scream before your second orgasm sends shock waves through your body. A few more thrusts and you hear him moan as he reaches his own ecstasy and cums deep inside of you. You almost collapse but his hands go back to your hips, steadying you. He pulls out and you can feel his seed and your own wetness leaking out of you and running down your inner thigh.
“wow, I haven’t been fucked like that in a while” you laugh
“I’m not done yet, baby” he taunts
flipping you back over onto your back you can see that he’s already hard again. Gods bless those mutant genes that turned him into whatever creature was kneeling before you. You don’t think you can take him a third time but before you have the chance to interject he’s inside you again and pumping in and out at an overwhelming pace. He runs his hand up over your breast to your neck and squeezes the sides of your throat, cutting off the blood supply to your head and you can feel your whole face redden with the pressure. He looks deep into your eyes, lost in his own pleasure. You’re mind is tingling with lack of oxygen and the force of his cock inside you and you’re close again. You slip your hands between your thighs and begin to play with yourself as he fucks you mercilessly, hand still at your throat. Suddenly your hands are pushed out of the way
“beg me to let you cum” he commands
you do as you’re told
“Please” you pleaded with him “I need this, I need it so bad please just let me cum”
He grunts as he thrusts harder, allowing your hands back at your pussy and you both cum at the same time. Bodies twitching in the afterglow of what had just happened.
He rolls to the floor beside you and lies on his back, both panting with exhaustion. He cups your sex with his hand.
“so, what did James tell you” he says as he catches his breath.
shit. you hadn’t thought this far ahead.
Fin.

Chapter 7

Meek:
“Yo, Ant go get the door it should be one of them little nigga’s for the drop” Wayne said blowing smoke out his mouth.
Popping the rubber band on the stack of money I pushed it into the money counter. The amount of money we’ve made since teaming up with Carter in the last month was what we usually made in 6 months.
Puffing on my blunt I continued to count the money just as Ant walked in carrying three duffle bags. Biggs walked in behind him with another two duffle bags in his hand.
I motioned for them to drop the bag in the corner.
“Yo Meek, I heard you locked down fine ass Chanel Wright” Biggs said sitting in the chair across from me.
Dropping the stack of money on the table I looked up at him. “What?”
“I ain’t heard of a nigga locking that down, so I gotta know how is it?” Biggs asked.
“Oh shit” Wayne said chocking on the smoke.
Sitting up in my chair I leaned closer to him. “You trying to ask me how my girl pussy is?” I asked my jaw clenching.
“Hell yeah, I’m trying to know what that pussy like.I mean it’s Chanel Wright, every hood nigga wanna piece of that” Biggs said laughing.
Wayne and Dre shook their head as Biggs continued to dig himself into a deeper whole.
Before he even saw it coming I grabbed a bottle off the table and smashed it into his head. “Don’t you ever in your fucking life talk about my shawty. Do you hear me? Her name don’t even need to be coming off your lips. I’m not the one Biggs and you know that” I barked at him. He laid on the floor holding the back of his head, there was a small gash he was leaking from.
“Meek, damn I’m sorry” Biggs said holding the back of his head.
“Yo Biggs, you really put your foot in your mouth” Dre said
“Yeah nigga, you know this nigga crazy ass fuck” Wayne said.
“Get the fuck outta here man, and next time I see you make sure you act right” I barked out.
Ant helped Biggs up and helped him out of the trap house. I was still fuming and pacing back and forth in the room.
“Yo Meek calm down, my nigga. You should’ve known this shit would happen. You wifed a hood nigga’s dream. You got a trophy on your arm you know the streets gone talk” Wayne said.
But I wasn’t trying to hear none of that. I felt disrespected and it wasn’t sitting right with me.
My phone vibrated in my pocket pulling me from my trance. Looking down at the screen I saw it was Carter.
“Wassup G?” I answered.
“I need y'all to meet me at the warehouse, we need to have a meeting” he said.
“All of us?“
"Yeah, I need talk to y'all tonight” he said.
“We in the middle of getting this week’s drops. We could be there in about an hour” I said.
“Ight, wrap it up and come to the meeting when you done” he said.
“Ight G” I said hanging up.
“Yo we gotta wrap this up, we gotta go to the warehouse after this” I said.
“Everything good?” Dre asked
I shrugged “ he just said he wanna have a meeting with us”
“Ahh shit, that don’t sound good” Dre said.
“I mean everything on our end is good. Payments come in fast and on time and he doubling our drops so we moving shit fast” I said.
“Well I guess we’ll find out in a few” Wayne said.
Nodding my head I sat back down and continued counting the money.
_______
An hour later we were walking into the warehouse. Greeting the guards, we made our way into the office. Carter, and his right hand man Dee sat at the table.
“Finally y'all made it” Dee said.
“You always so damn dramatic” Wayne said and Dee cracked a smile. Giving them a dap I sat across from Carter with Dre and Wayne on either side of me.
“So what’s going on?” I asked.
“Y'all been moving weight like crazy. I gotta say I’m impressed” Carter said. Dee nodded his head in approval.
“Appreciate it G” I said.
“So with that being said I wanna move y'all up in positions” he said.
“What you mean?” I asked
“Listen I’m turning 52 in a couple months, Dee is almost 53. We can’t be running the dope game for much longer. We wanna get you prepared to take over for us when we retire” Carter said.
“Wait what?"
"You giving us your business?” Wayne asked
“Yeah, we’ve only known each other for a little while. Thats a big move to make” Dre said.
“I know, but I also know everything there is to know about the three of you. We’ve always made money, but adding you guys to our payroll has doubled almost tripled our monthly income. Not only that you guys move smart, the legit business you’re using to clean your money makes it almost impossible to tie anything to you. Plus 10 years in the game and neither of you have so much as a parking ticket shit is impressive. I see Me and Dee in each and every one of you, if I can trust anyone to take over my operation it’s the three of you. It’ll take some time to get you guys fully in position but it’s yours if you guys want it” he said.
“Hell yeah we want it” Wayne said.
Dee smirked and shook his head. Carter smiled but his eyes were fixed on me waiting for my answer.
“So, I’m guessing this is another thing I have to keep from her right?” I asked.
“For now, this information doesn’t leave this room. It’s a quiet transition until everything is in order” he said.
Sighing I nodded my head. Running the Cartel would make me rich beyond my dreams. It was what we were hustling for our entire lives. Carter was putting us in a position to take over Miami.
“What’s the word Meek?” Dre asked.
All eyes were on me, it was still my call at the end of the day. And I knew what my answer was it was a win-win. “Yeah we taking it” I said.
Carter smiled and leaned back in his chair. "Well, let’s talk business now” he said.

Chanel:
“So what's the plan for your birthday?” Aria asked.
“I’m honestly not even in the mood to do anything big” I said leaning on the couch.
“Seriously your turning 25 we have to do something” Stephanie said.
“A small get together is honestly all I wanna do. I don’t wanna do the club or nothing plus we have our Christmas trip planned so I don’t need to go on a trip.
“Fine we gone plan you a fire ass party” Cassidy said.
“You guys have like two days, to plan everything” I said
“Girl we got this don’t even worry about it” Aria said.
“Enough about me can we talk about Cassidy and Cash real quick” I said.
“What about me and Cash?” she asked.
“What happened when he dropped you home? Cause you guys were very cozy the other night” Stephanie said.
Cassidy smiled and shook her head. “Nothing he just dropped me home and that’s it. He’s cool” she said.
“So what about Chris?” Steph asked.
Cassidy sighed, and played with the string of her sweatpants.
“Cass what’s going on?” I asked.
“I don’t know how to say this to you guys so you understand where I’m coming from” she said.
“Hey we’re here for you; whatever it is” Stephanie said.
“I’m not in love with Chris. I haven’t been in love with him for the past two years” she said.
“Wait what?” I asked. I could see the pain on my sister’s face and I pulled her into my chest. “Cassidy if you don’t love him why are you staying with him? If you’re not happy?” I asked.
“Because, he doesn’t deserve this he treats me so well and I can’t bring myself to leave him. He’s so sweet. But I just don’t feel the same about him anymore” Cassidy said leaning on my shoulder.
“Cassidy but your suffering, because you’re with someone you don’t love anymore. You don’t deserve that you’re only 23 you deserve to be happy. You’re not a bad person and if you don’t love him don’t force yourself to stay with him” Aria said.
“I just don’t know. I keep thinking that I’ll snap out of this faze"
"It’s not a faze if you’ve been feeling like this for the past two years” Steph said.
“Maybe, you’re right. I just can’t do that to him right now, I’m not ready I’ve been with him for the past 4 years. That’s like my entire adult life I don’t know what to do without him” she said.
“Cass, you do what you’re already doing without him. You live your fucking life. Don’t feel like you can’t be you without him” I said.
“Exactly, plus it looked like you and Cash were getting along and he’s fine af. So there’s always that” Stephanie said.
Cassidy smiled at the mention of Cash’s name. “Cash is honestly the sweetest, we’ve been texting none stop since he dropped me home that night. He makes me feel something I’ve never felt before and that shit is fucking scary” she said.
“I say see how it goes with Cash and leave Chris. Even if nothing happens with Cash, you don’t need to be forcing a relationship you’re not invested in. Shit it’s Miami there’s men everywhere you don’t need to be stuck with one you don’t love” Stephanie said.
“Leave Chris before you start anything with Cash” Aria said.
“Honestly she’s going to leave him anyway so it honestly doesn’t matter” Stephanie replied.
“All right can we change the subject please” Cassidy said getting up from her spot on the couch and walking into the kitchen.
“Fine, but don’t think we’re letting this go” Stephanie said.
“Oh trust me, I know” Cassidy said.
Before I could say anything my phone rung. It was Meek’s custom ringtone.
“Hey baby” I answered.
“Wassup Mama, you busy right now?” he asked
“Not really just hanging out with the girls” I said.
“I need you to meet me somewhere” he said.
“Umm, ok when and where?"
"Now and I’ll send you the address” he said
“Alright, i’ll see you soon"
"Ight, love you ma"
"Love you too” I said hanging up.
“You leaving?” Cassidy asked.
“Yeah, Meek want’s me to meet him” I said standing up.
“Alright, we need to do some party planning anyway. So that’s good that your leaving” Steph said.
“Please don’t over do it, no more than 15 people cause I'm most likely just going to have it at my penthouse" I said.
"Ummm, maybe" Stephanie said.
Cassidy and Aria both glared at her. And I shrugged my shoulders.
"Anyway I have to go, but please keep it small" I said hugging each of them before I walked out of Aria's house.
___________________
Thirty minutes later I pulled into the driveway of a multi-million dollar home. I raised my eyebrows in confusion, if I didn't see Meek's Ferrari next to me I would've sworn I was at the wrong address.
Parking my car I grabbed my purse from the passenger's seat and got out of the car. Looking around the house I couldn't ignore how beautiful it was. It wasn't overbearing for such a big house, it was simple but modern but it didn't feel cold or like no one lived here. It was the exact style house I saw myself raising a family in.
Walking up the stairs, I rang the doorbell when I reached the black wooden door. A few second's later a small middle aged women came to the door. “Hi, you must be Chanel. I’m Isabella” she said flashing a warm smile.
Returning her smile I nodded in agreement “Hi Isabella, my boyfriend told me to meet him here” I said.
“Yes, yes come in. Ahmeek is in the living room it’s just straight ahead” she said.
“Thank you” I said watching her disappear to the other side of the house. Walking down the hallway I walked into the living room. Meek was standing in front of the glass doors looking out onto the backyard.
“Baby, what’s going on?” I asked walking over to him.
“What do you think?” He asked
“About what?” I asked.
“The house"
Looking around I noticed how beautifully decorated the interior of the house was.
“It’s beautiful.. Who’s house is it? ” I asked.
“Our’s” Meek replied.
“Wait what?” I asked.
Meek smiled, pulling two set’s of keys from his pocket. He dropped one into my hand. “Happy birthday beautiful” he said.
Staring down at the keys in my hand I could barely form word's I was stunned. “This is our’s?”
“Yes, unless you don’t like it. But I’m pretty sure I got your taste down packed” Meek smiled confidently.
I was at a loss for word’s I didn’t know what to say. I could feel the tears, forming and I tried my best to blink them away but I couldn’t. And as one fell down my cheek Meek brushed it away. Cupping his finger under my chin to force me to look up at him. "Baby, talk to me” he said.
“I-I love it, I love you so much. I don’t know what I did to deserve you but I swear I thank god for you every single day” I mumbled in between sobs.
Grabbing the back of my neck Meek pulled me into his chest. I clung to him as I cried. I wasn’t sad I was happy. Ahmeek was the kind of man you only read about in books. But to experience such a man; to be with him made my heart swell. I couldn’t imagine living a day without him and I hoped to god I never had too.
“You’ve changed me ma, I never thought that I’d be in love or be buying a crib with someone else. But I want it all with you ma, I'mma give you my last name and I'm putting 7 little one's in you. And they're going to look just like you. You are my heart" he said.
Looking up at him through wet lashes. “I am not pushing out 7 kids Ahmeek. And I swear you making me soft" I said laughing.
Meek smiled and pressed a gentle kiss to my lips.
I looked around the house one more time “Does the house come furnished? ” I asked.
“Nah I hired someone to take care of that"
“Wait how long have you had this house?“
"Little over a month, if you don’t like it they can redo it if you want” Meek said
“No, it’s perfect, thank you baby” I said kissing him.
“We move in whenever you’re ready” Meek said.
“We can start moving tomorrow, but right now I think you should show me to our new bedroom” I said.
Licking his lip’s Meek scooped me into his arms and flung me over his shoulder. I squealed as he carried me up the stairs and into our bedroom.

Finding Harmony - Ch 6 Resolution
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7
Resolution in western tonal music theory is the move of a note or chord from dissonance (an unstable sound) to a consonance (a more final or stable sounding one).
“I’m sorry, could you say that again?” Luka pressed his phone tighter to his ear.
“Um...Jagged’s sending a limo to take us to the awards gala? And apparently there’s going to be a red carpet and everything.”
“Marinette, how well do you know Jagged Stone? I know you’ve done work for him but this is—“
“Excessive?”
“I mean, kind of? Not that I don’t think you deserve limos and red carpets but—“ Luka put his hand over his face. “Man, I just can’t figure Jagged out.”
“He’s impulsive,” Marinette said sympathetically. “He makes a lot more sense if you pretend he’s permanently twelve.” Luka chuckled. “I don’t know why he’s taken such a shine to me—“
“Well, that part’s easy,” he snorted. “Because you’re amazing, and Maman says that if there’s one thing that never fails Jagged, it’s his ability to recognize other people’s talent and profit from it.”
“I could believe that, actually,” Marinette replied thoughtfully. “He hired Penny, after all. Luka, are you sure you’re okay with coming? It’s not too late to back out if you think you’ll be uncomfortable. There’s not really any avoiding him, he probably will at least come over and talk to us.”
“No, I...I kind of want to meet him myself?” Luka paced the deck slowly, thinking over his words. “I feel like maybe I’d understand better if I could really talk to him, even if it’s just for a few minutes.”
“Okay,” Marinette said sympathetically. “I think I understand. If you’re sure.”
“I’m absolutely sure I want to go to a fancy music party with you,” Luka smiled. “The Jagged stuff, I’m less certain of, but it’ll be fine. He’s treated you well and he and Maman settled things between them. I’ll be okay unless something really crazy goes down.”
“This is Paris, Luka, something really crazy is practically guaranteed.”
“True,” Luka chuckled. “I’ll risk it.”
“Okay. Then I’ll tell Penny to have the car come pick you up first, and then come here. I’m...I’m really looking forward to it.”
“Me too,” he smiled, leaning on the rail. “It feels like I haven’t seen you in a while.” He hesitated. “Are you taking care of yourself? That sentimonster last night was really close to your house.”
“It was, but it didn’t stay here long before Ladybug and Chat Noir lured it away. It did wake us all up, though, so I’m a little short on sleep.”
“I won’t keep you then. You get some rest, and I’ll see you this weekend. Unless you’re coming to rehearsal on Wednesday?”
Marinette sighed. “I wish I could, but I have, er...a massage appointment that afternoon.”
“Really?” Luka lifted his eyebrows at the lie. “Sounds relaxing.”
“Mm, not really, actually. It’s, um, a new thing I’m trying, a Chinese thing, actually, there’s chanting and meditation, but it doesn’t exactly come easy to me.”
“I’ll bet,” Luka chuckled. “But it’ll do you good to learn to slow your mind down a little bit when you want to.”
“Maybe,” Marinette sighed. “Anyway, I still have to finish my dress before this weekend, so I probably won’t have much free time.”
Luka frowned. “You’re making a whole new dress? I guess I kind of figured you were just going to modify the one you made for Juleka.”
Marinette laughed in a way that told him he’d just said something stupid, and Luka couldn’t help smiling at her mirth. “I could never carry that dress the way Juleka did,” she giggled. “But don’t worry, I’ll be dressed and ready when you get here.”
“Just don’t overwork yourself, Marinette.”
His heart skipped at the affection in her voice when she said, “I won’t, Luka. I’ll see you Friday.”
“Goodnight, Marinette,” Luka said warmly.
“Goodnight, Luka.”
Luka didn’t immediately move from the rail, gazing at the lights of the city over the water. The week was going to crawl by, he knew it.
***
“You look pretty good, considering what you had to work with,” Juleka said, straightening his suit coat.
“Thanks,” he chuckled. “I think Marinette gets the credit, though.”
“Hmm. It’s a nice look.” A small smile quirked her lips. “I hope you have fun tonight. Make some good memories.” She tilted her head slightly. “What’s bugging you?”
“It’s stupid,” he grumbled.
“Obviously. What?”
“Her parents. I don’t exactly stack up against Adrien the perfect, wholesome, millionaire, model-in-a-mansion Agreste on the ‘boys approved to date my daughter’ scale.” He sighed. “Which is dumb on so many levels, starting with the fact that we’re not actually dating.”
Juleka grunted. “They’re cool. Once they see how you look at her, they won’t care about anything else.”
Luka flushed. “Am I that obvious?”
“Sometimes. Just try not to drool when she comes down the stairs.” Juleka smirked. “If you don’t pass out on sight, you’ll be fine.”
“You’ve seen the dress?”
“Yep. I’ve even seen her in the dress. You’re doomed.” Luka groaned and dropped his forehead on his sister’s shoulder. “Ugh, get off, you’re heavy.” She shoved him, and then put her arms around him when he didn’t budge. “You’re about to go rub elbows with some of the biggest names in music and you’re mooning over a girl. Just go and have fun.”
“I love you,” Luka muttered. “You know that, right? Thanks for being cool. Especially about me making such an idiot of myself over your friend.”
“It is pretty lame,” Juleka agreed. “But Marinette’s pretty awesome, so I forgive you. Just…” she sighed, but didn’t finish.
“Luka!” Anarka roared from upstairs. “Your ride is here!”
Luka lifted his head and kissed Juleka’s temple. “I gotta go. I’ll try not to wake you up when I get home.”
He went up the stairs and smiled at the look of pride his mother gave him. “Watch yourself tonight,” she told him. “There’ll be a lot of sharks there and anyone with half an ear will know how talented you are. Don’t get bullied into anything, and for chaos’ sake, don’t sign anything.” Luka chuckled and kissed her cheek.
“I won’t, Maman. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.”
Anarka brushed his hair back affectionately, and to his mild surprise, leaned forward and kissed his forehead. “I’m proud of you. Go show that girl what she’s missing.” She winked.
Luka just smiled at her and took himself over the gangplank, trying not to gawk too obviously at the waiting limo.
***
Marinette and her parents were actually outside the bakery when the limo pulled up, taking pictures, it appeared. She had her back to him as the car pulled up, and he saw ruffles cascading from her waist to the floor. Then she turned around and his breath caught. The ruffles were only in the back of the dress, like a train. The front was a strapless knee-length sheath, embellished with snakes and flowers along the lines of her body. There was nothing inappropriate about it, she was covered from her chest to her knees and it wasn’t obscenely tight, but her bare shoulders and arms were enough to get his heart racing.
And she looked so happy to see him.
Luka didn’t wait for the chauffeur, he stepped out of the car as soon as it had stopped and reached for Marinette’s hands. “Wow,” was all he said, and she giggled. She stepped back from him and did a careful turn on the toes of her kitten heel shoes. “What do you think? Rock ‘n roll enough for Jagged Stone?”
He thought he needed to remember how to breathe. His eyes were pinned to the snake at her hip, twining through her signature flowers. “Just...stunning.”
Marinette giggled. “Thanks Luka. I’m glad you like the dress, I think it turned out well.”
“I don’t mean the dress, Marinette, I mean you. The whole package. You’re not just a pretty girl in a pretty dress, you’re…” he shook his head in frustration. “I really need my guitar. Just, all that work and creativity and everything you are, and the dress is just the icing on the cake.”
There was a squeak beyond Marinette and Luka jumped slightly, having forgotten about her parents. Crap...But when he turned, Tom and Sabine were clinging to one another and staring at Luka and Marinette with starry eyes. They made a little flapping motion with their hands - don’t mind us - and Luka turned back to Marinette. “I do have a question for you though,” he leaned in, eyes twinkling. “Where have you been keeping all that?”
“All what?” Marinette asked, tilting her head curiously. Luka stepped forward and took her hand, raising her arm so her bicep flexed, just as she’d done to him weeks ago. Marinette blushed.
“That,” he grinned. “I can’t believe you gave me a hard time when you’ve been packing these under those cute little cardigans. What, do you deadlift flour sacks for fun?”
Not to mention yo-yoing all over Paris, that had to be a hell of an upper body workout.
Marinette made a face at him. “Not for fun,” she protested. “Helping with the deliveries is one of my chores.” She blushed and ran her fingers along her shoulder and down her arm in a move that he knew was self-conscious but was giving him some very different feelings. “Is it weird?”
“It’s hot,” he snorted, and then coughed, turning red. “I mean—well, no, that’s exactly what I meant, I’ll be honest.” She was lean, not bulky, but he could clearly see the well-defined muscles in her arms and shoulders, and the sight of her back made him weak in the knees for a moment before she threw a black lace shawl around her shoulders.
“Really, Marinette, you look amazing,” he said, softening his expression. “I was just teasing you, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. You’re gorgeous and the dress is amazing. The ruffles are really you and the details look great. And to think,” he took her hand, “Your looks are the least remarkable thing about you.” He winked as Marinette jerked her hand back, her blush extending all the way down to her shoulders as she shoved him playfully.
“All right, kids,” Sabine called cheerfully, and Luka jumped, flushing. Still, both Sabine and Tom were still beaming at them both, so he relaxed a little. “Come let me get some pictures of you two in front of the limo and then you can go enjoy yourselves.”
“The car is insane, we could fit the whole band and Ivan’s drums in there with room to spare,” Luka commented as they arranged themselves in front of it.
Marinette giggled as she cuddled up under his arm. “That’s Jagged for you, never do anything reasonable when you can go totally overboard.” They shared a smile before turning their faces to the camera.
***
“You know,” Luka remarked, looking out of the tinted window as they pulled up beside the red carpet. “I really thought I’d be older the first time I got to do this.” He looked back at Marinette with a grin, and she giggled.
“It’s good practice,” Marinette told him, leaning around him to look. “Wow, that’s a lot of people,” she breathed.
“Don’t get cold feet on me now,” Luka said, threading his fingers through hers.
“They’ll probably figure out quickly that we aren’t very important,” she muttered to herself, and then flushed. “I mean, not that you aren’t important—“
“I know what you meant,” he cut her off gently. As cute and occasionally enlightening as her mini-meltdowns could be, now wasn’t a good time. “Take a deep breath and smile, gorgeous, we’re up.” A member of the hotel staff opened the door. Luka took a deep breath himself and slid out of the car, smiling as he turned to offer Marinette his hand. She took it and set her feet carefully on the carpet before standing up. Her eyes flicked around nervously and settled on his, and though he could see a bit of nervous tremble around her lips, her smile was genuine. She took the arm he offered and they began walking the carpet. Marinette stumbled once but Luka steadied her. After the initial barrage of flashbulbs, the reporters mostly ignored them. They were almost to the hotel door when they were stopped by a young lady with a press badge.
“Excuse me! Excuse me, I’m Leslie Mason with Style Queen. Can I ask who you’re wearing tonight?”
Luka was surprised and Marinette was paralyzed, but his stage experience stood him in good stead as he flashed a smile and brought Marinette forward with a gentle tug.
“Maybe you’ve heard of Jagged Stone’s favorite up-and-coming designer, Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Well, this is the lady herself and we’re wearing her original designs tonight.”
“Stunning work, Mlle Dupain-Cheng,” the reporter said admiringly. “And you design for Jagged Stone? Forgive me for saying so but you’re very young, aren’t you? I’d be interested in doing an interview with you sometime for our junior division.”
“I’d love that,” Marinette said, slipping out one of her business cards. “Here’s my website and information.”
Leslie took the card, sticking it under a paper clip on her notebook and making a note next to it. She looked back up at Luka.
“And you are?”
“Luka Couffaine, lead guitarist for Kitty Section. We’re here because of Marinette, though, I’m just the guy lucky enough to be her date.” He winked at Marinette.
“Don’t let him fool you,” Marinette said, squeezing his arm. “He’s a very talented musician and you’re going to hear his name in the future.” She elbowed him and he pulled one of the cards she’d given him out of a pocket.
“Here’s the band’s Instagram and email, feel free to check us out,” he said.
“I will,” Leslie said, brightening. “Thanks for taking the time to speak to me, I know it’s a madhouse out here tonight. Have a great night!”
“Wow,” Marinette breathed as they turned away, “She was kind of young, she’s probably not one of their main writers, that’s why she was talking to us, but an interview, even a small one, for Style Teen would be huge.”
“You were right about the business cards,” Luka murmured back as they reached the doors. “You never cease to impress me.” He smiled at her as they went through the doors to the hotel, following the crowd to the elevator.
“I just thought there’s probably a lot of people from the music industry here tonight and I wanted you to be able to make connections if you want to.”
“Thanks, Marinette, really.” Luka curled his fingers around her shoulder to guide her in front of him into the elevator, careful not to step on her dress as he followed. “But honestly, I’m here to have a good time with you.”
“I know,” she smiled at him. “But just in case. I hope we’re not going to be the only people in our age group though...I suppose Chloe will probably be here somewhere, but she probably won’t want to hang out with us anyway.”
The doormen were just opening the doors for them when there was an uproar behind them. Both of them looked back to see Adrien Agreste stepping out of a limo and waving to the crowd of reports.
“Adrien!” Marinette said in surprise. “Oh, I should have guessed he would come, he’s a fan of Jagged and his dad designs for Clara Nightingale, and I know she’s going to be here tonight.” They watched as Adrien turned and offered his hand to help Kagami out of the car. Luka glanced at Marinette but rather than looking concerned, her face lit with a smile. “Kagami! That’ll be good, then, at least we won’t be the only kids here.”
“We’d better go on inside, they’re probably going to be a few minutes,” Luka observed as Adrien posed and smiled and waved and fielded questions from the crowd.
“Right, I’m sorry!” Marinette turned and smiled apologetically at the patiently waiting doormen.
They followed the crowd of fancy clothes to the elevators and up to the ballroom. “At least the dinner will be good,” Marinette commented. “Alya’s mom is the head chef here and she’s amazing.”
Luka’s mouth dropped open slightly as he looked around the room. “Wow, there are some crazy famous people here,” he said quietly, and felt Marinette squeeze his arm.
“You’re not going to go all music fanboy on me are you?” she teased.
“I might,” Luka replied honestly. “Some of these people are legends. If they talk to me I can’t guarantee I won’t start to foam at the mouth. Look, that’s the lead guitarist for Steel Skullz over there in the red suit, you wouldn’t believe how that guy can shred.”
Marinette giggled and leaned into him. “I’m so glad you came with me.”
Surprised, Luka glanced down at her and put his arm around her. “Thanks for bringing me.” He glanced around. “Was there anything you want to do?”
“I should find Jagged eventually and congratulate him,” Marinette said thoughtfully, “But I can do that any time, I’m sure we’ll hear him when he’s nearby. Let’s see, there’s the cocktail hour and then the dinner, and then the Mayor’s going to make a speech,” she rolled her eyes, “And then it’ll be the afterparty, that’ll probably be when things really get out there. It’s guaranteed to get wild with Jagged, after all. So I guess now we just kind of mingle and try some hors d'oeuvres and see who we bump into? Maybe see how many we recognize, although I think you’ll have me beat in this crowd.” She darted her eyes up at him with a shy smile.
“That sounds great,” Luka smiled back at her. “I like your hair this way, by the way,” he reached up to touch the shiny blue-black curls hanging at the back of her head. “I didn’t get a chance to say so before.” Every time she turned her head the tips of her curls traced the line from her neck to her shoulder and he was finding it incredibly distracting.
They drifted through the crowd, and it took effort to keep his mouth shut and not just gape at all the musical celebrities around them. There were others, too, Luka recognized some actors in the crowd. They were stopped a few times for compliments on their clothes, usually coupled with delicate questions designed to figure out who they were, and more importantly, who they knew. Marinette handed out a few more business cards.
A few of the celebrities were actually in their age bracket. They were both checked out and then chatted up by the members of a boy band that Luka vaguely recognized, though he wasn’t a fan of their sound. Luka gently deflected his admirer and watched with slightly exasperated amusement as Marinette failed to recognize the flirting that was aimed at her, too busy talking up Luka and the band to recognize she was being hit on. The boys eventually gave up and drifted off with Kitty Section cards in their pockets, and Luka teased her mercilessly after they were gone.
She was still red-faced and spluttering when she was tapped on the shoulder by the one person least likely to improve her composure. “Adrien,” she exclaimed when she turned.
“Hi, Marinette, I should have guessed you would be here,” he said to Marinette with a smile as she exchanged cheek kisses with Kagami. “Hi, Luka,” he held his hand out. “Good to see you.”
“Adrien,” Luka took Adrien’s offered hand and pulled him in to bump shoulders. “Nice to see you.” He nodded to Kagami. “Nice to see you again too, Kagami. You look very nice.” She did, though she also looked stiff and formal in her silk kimono.
Kagami nodded back. “Luka.”
“Wow, Marinette, did you make that dress?” Adrien asked, giving Marinette a once over. “You look amazing.”
“She did,” Luka said proudly, lifting Marinette’s hand over her head so that she spun under his arm, the ruffled train flaring to show off the embroidered snake and flowers. “Isn’t she stunning? Beauty, brains, and style in one tiny, tiny package.”
“Laying it on a little thick, Luka,” she giggled, digging an elbow in his ribs. “And I am not that tiny!”
“I mean every word.” He shot her a soft grin and she went from pink to crimson. “And you are pretty tiny.” He winced as she punched his arm. “Powerful though.”
“Well, I’m really glad you’re both here,” Adrien grinned, rubbing his neck. “Now Kagami and I have someone to hang out with.”
“Is your mother here, Kagami?” Marinette asked.
“No, she’s not interested in these types of things,” Kagami replied, blushing slightly as she glanced at Adrien. “But when she agreed to let me go since it was with Adrien.”
“Nathalie is here somewhere,” Adrien gestured vaguely. “But I think she’s just staying long enough to greet some clients and then she’s going to take off. Clara Nightingale’s supposed to be here and my father’s been designing for her forever, and there’s a few others she wants to see. I don’t think she’s even staying for the dinner, just the cocktail hour.”
“Are you a fan of Jagged Stone, Kagami?” Marinette asked.
“Honestly, I’m not very familiar with his music,” Kagami admitted. “I came because Adrien invited me,” she continued, slipping her hand through Adrien’s elbow. “But I’m glad you’re here, Marinette. It’s good to see a friend.” The almost shy way she said the word friend was kind of adorable.
“Well, we’ve got an expert with us tonight,” Marinette said cheerfully, looking up at Luka in a way that brought color to his cheeks. “So if you have any questions about music, he’s the one to ask.”
“I don’t know, Marinette, I think you’re one up on me when it comes to Jagged,” Luka said, nudging her. “I think he might be a bigger fan of you than you are of him.”
“I don’t think so,” she said, bumping him with her hip. “I bet you’d blow me away if it came to talking about his music and his career.”
“Well, between the two of you we should be pretty well covered,” Adrien laughed. Then he sighed. “Nathalie’s signaling me, I have to go be the face of the brand for a moment. Kagami, do you want to stay here with Marinette? It’ll probably be way more interesting than coming with me.”
“I’d rather come with you Adrien,” Kagami smiled up at him, and he shrugged with a self-deprecating grin.
“Suit yourself. We’ll catch you again later Marinette, Luka.”
“Bye Adrien!” Marinette waved as the other couple moved away. Luka looked down at her curiously. She caught him looking and blinked. “What?”
“Nothing,” he said quickly, flashing a smile. “I guess I thought you’d be depressed that they had to go.”
“They’ll be back,” Marinette shrugged. “And I’ve got you. Shall we go check out the hors—oh, brace yourself, here comes Jagged.”
“Marinette!” Jagged bellowed from halfway across the ballroom. The crowd parted for him as he made a beeline towards them. “Penny, she’s here!”
“Hi Jagged,” Marinette waved and winced slightly as the rock star crushed her into a hug. “Congratulations on your award.”
“Aw, thanks, my favorite fashion designer. The dress you made Penny is killer.” He let her go just enough to spin her around to face his agent.
“Penny!” Marinette accepted the older woman’s embrace. “You look fantastic.”
“Of course she does!” boomed Jagged as he put his arms around them both. “Penny always looks radiant, but I knew when the mayor told us about this little party that nobody could make her look as rock ‘n roll as you, Marinette! And now we have two rock ‘n roll goddesses amongst us! Love the snakes.”
“Thanks Jagged,” Marinette squirmed herself out from under Jagged’s arm and retreated to Luka’s side. “You remember my friend Luka? Luka Couffaine.”
Jagged turned and Luka felt breathless just from the sheer force of the man’s personality. “Hope you’re taking good care of my girl tonight in this crowd. Let me guess, Marinette made this too? Killer!”
“She did,” Luka smiled at her as he took the hand Jagged offered. “Marinette’s done a lot of work for my band as well. No better designer out there.”
“Luka,” Marinette huffed.
“Wait, I remember you,” Jagged said, still holding onto Luka’s hand. “You’re Nanarchy’s son.” Jagged’s eyes fixed on him again, searching his face in a way that made Luka tense up. “How old are you, kid?”
“I’m seventeen,” Luka answered a little stiffly. He could practically see the rock star doing the math in his head, just as Luka had when he’d seen the date on the sleeve of his mother’s old album.
“Huh,” was all Jagged said before releasing his hand. “So you play, Luka?”
“Guitar just like my mom,” Luka replied, sticking his hands in his pockets. “I play lead in a band with some friends of mine and my sister, Juleka, plays bass.”
“He’s amazing, Jagged,” Marinette put in. “You should hear him. I mean, I know you heard him on the boat with the band for a bit, but you didn’t stay very long that day.”
“That so, eh?” Jagged gave her a sly look. “Does he play better than Aaaaadrieeeen?”
Marinette went white and then red. “Adrien’s great on the piano but Luka’s the best guitarist I’ve ever heard,” she said staunchly, and it was Luka’s turn to blush. “You kind of put me on the spot that day and I wasn’t thinking very clearly. Of course, I’m not really a musician myself so maybe my judgement isn’t the best. You’ll just have to jam with Luka yourself if you want to see how good he is. If he’s willing to play with you, that is.” She shot Luka a wink.
“If Nanarchy taught him, he’s gotta be good,” Jagged said, looking Luka over again with an expression Luka couldn’t quite read. Then Jagged frowned, looking over their heads. “Penny, sleaze alert.”
“Jagged!” cried a familiar voice that put Luka’s teeth on edge. He felt Marinette’s hand slip into his. She drew him back with her a bit so that Jagged was between them and Bob Roth when he approached. Luka locked his fingers through hers and pulled her a little behind him, and he felt her free hand on his back.
“I’m just catching up with my favorite young fan.” Jagged swept his arm toward Marinette, and Luka’s fingers tightened around hers. Bob followed his gaze and sniffed.
“Oh, it’s you, petite. Jagged hasn’t dropped you yet?”
“Marinette did Penny’s dress for tonight,” Jagged said, waving his drink towards Penny. “Be nice, Bob, Marinette’s a great talent. She’s gonna go places.”
Bob snorted, and Luka gritted his teeth. “We’ll see,” Boh muttered, “But your boyfriend here is dead weight, petite. He’s not going anywhere in the music business after what he and the bug did to me.”
“You’re hardly in any position to make threats, Mr. Roth,” Marinette said coldly, gripping Luka’s arm. “Everyone knows now what you tried to do.”
“Everyone knows, and no one cares,” scoffed Bob. “I told you the whole music industry is eating out of my hand. And you, kid,” he addressed Luka, “You’re going to be begging XY to do your music, because you’ll never get anyone else to give you a second listen.”
“I wouldn’t sell my toenail clippings to XY after what you pulled,” Luka bit out.
Jagged burst out laughing and Luka jolted as the rock star flung an arm around his shoulders. “Bob, you don’t know what you’re talking about. If you’re this against him he must be good. Come on, Luka, this sounds like a story I need to hear. See you around, Bob.” And with that, Jagged Stone turned his back on Bob Roth and marched off with a bewildered Luka under his arm, Marinette trotting to catch up with them.
Luka planted his feet for a moment, refusing to go any further until Marinette’s hand was back in his. “Are you all right, Luka?” she asked worriedly.
“I’ve been better,” he admitted, glancing at her and trying to give her a reassuring smile. “That guy pisses me off, but I don’t plan on letting him or some stupid butterfly ruin our night.” She gave him a glowing smile, and he squeezed her hand.
“That guy’s a leech,” Jagged snorted. “And he calls me a has-been. Don’t buy into his threats, he’s a bully but he’s a dinosaur and he’s on his way out.” He grinned and dropped his voice, moving between Luka and Marinette to drop his arms around their necks and pull their heads close. “I’m not allowed to say anything yet, but Penny here has plans.” He giggled, and made kissy faces at Penny, whose dark cheeks shaded pink.
Marinette giggled too. “I’m glad to hear it, Jagged.”
“Now’s not really the place to be talking about those kinds of things,” Penny admonished. “And you have a lot of people left to meet, Jagged.” She nudged Jagged with her elbow. “And we don’t want to keep Marinette from her date.”
Luka had to bite his tongue to keep from laughing as Jagged looked at him with dawning comprehension and a sudden expression of glee. “Yes!” he crowed. “Yes, you take my Marinette and go show her a good time, she’s way too rock ‘n roll for that model kid anyhow. Holy balls, this is awesome, this is perfect, does Nanarchy know? Yes, take her, go dance. Penny! Penny, go tell ‘em to play some sappy shit for a while, okay? We’ll rock out later after the kids go home. Mood music, that’s what we need right now.”
Luka looked away and coughed, trying to cover his laughter at the look on Marinette’s face. Penny winked at them as she led Jagged away, and Marinette put her hands over her face. “I swear, he’s more embarrassing than my parents.”
“Come on,” Luka offered his arm, still chuckling. “I’d hate to disappoint him, although…” He winced at the overly formal music that began playing. “I don’t exactly know how to waltz.”
“That’s too bad, Marinette’s a great dancer,” Adrien smiled at her.
She flushed. “Oh, no I’m not, you just made it easy to follow.”
Adrien looked eagerly at the dance floor, and turned to Kagami. “Would you like to dance, Kagami?”
Kagami looked down at the tight lines of her kimono and out at the dance floor dubiously. “I don’t think I can.”
“That’s such a shame,” murmured Marinette at Luka’s elbow. “I wonder if I could…” she trailed off, studying Kagami’s kimono, and Luka chuckled.
“You’ve got your designing face on.” He nudged Marinette.
“Sorry,” she giggled. “I’ll stop.”
“I’d never ask you too,” Luka assured her. “But I’m not sure even you can turn Kagami’s outfit into something fit for ballroom dances. Why don’t you and Adrien go dance?”
All three of them turned and looked at him. Luka shrugged. “Kagami can’t, and I don’t know how. You two go ahead, and Kagami and I can hang out here.”
“Do you want to, Marinette?” Adrien asked, eyes eager. “I hardly ever get to dance.”
“Ah...um, sure, okay? If Kagami doesn’t mind.” Marinette looked nervously between Kagami and Luka.
Kagami mustered a smile that was mostly genuine. “Go ahead.”
“Great!” Adrien grabbed Marinette’s hand.
As they passed Luka, Marinette paused to grab his arm, tugging him down so she could whisper, “She’s really super nice but she’s terrible at small talk. She’s not trying to shut you down, I promise, just keep talking. I promise she’s more interested than she sounds.”
Then she was gone, walking to the dance floor on Adrien’s arm.
“So, Kagami, what kind of music do you like?” Luka asked.
“You probably haven’t heard any of it,” Kagami replied flatly, and Luka smiled to himself.
“I might surprise you. I prefer rock, but I listen to a lot of different kinds of music. So. Anime, J-Pop, or Japanese traditional?” He raised his eyebrows slightly. “I’m starting there because you seem very tuned in to your traditions, but if you’re really into say, Chilean folk music, you can tell me, I won’t judge. I like all kinds of music.”
Kagami cracked a small smile. “You’re correct, most of what I’ve heard is traditional Japanese music, but I’m not passionate about it. I’ve listened to Adrien perform some classical piano as well. I enjoyed some of it. I guess music just doesn’t move me the way it does you.”
“You might enjoy it more if you learned more of the traditions behind it.” Kagami tilted her head at him and Luka smiled. “Nobody experiences music the same way. Some people have an intuitive understanding or an emotional connection. Some people have to learn the language of music before they can really understand it. Just like haiku, right? A layperson may appreciate the beauty of a single haiku or find themselves moved by it. But there’s an entire tradition behind haiku poetry and the symbolism it uses, and it’s hard to fully appreciate it as an art form without delving into the tradition behind it.”
"I see. You make a solid argument,” Kagami replied. “Perhaps the next time Adrien performs I can ask him for some background on the pieces.” She looked at him. “I would not have expected you to cite haiku as an example.”
“Music and poetry are closely tied,” Luka shrugged. “I’m honestly not very good at poetry, I feel like the music itself is simpler without words and I’ve always collaborated with someone else when a song needed vocals, but it’s still worth learning about. Some of it is really beautiful.”
“It’s admirable for you to pursue a line of study that’s difficult for you.”
“Thanks,” Luka chuckled.
Kagami hesitated. “I’m going to ask something that may be upsetting.”
“I don’t get upset easily, but I’ll tell you if you cross a line,” Luka promised.
Kagami smiled slightly. “Thank you. Why did you send Marinette to dance with Adrien? You must know she likes him and I can see that you like her. Why would you give your opponent an advantage?”
Luka chuckled. “He’s not my opponent.”
Kagami’s eyebrows rose slightly. “You don’t consider him competition?”
“I don’t consider love a competition,” Luka corrected. “I want Marinette to be happy. If she would be happier with Adrien, what good would it do to keep them apart? It wouldn’t change how they feel.” He looked at her. “Are you upset that Adrien wanted to dance with her?”
Kagami considered that, lips pressed together. “I don’t like it,” she said at last. “But if I have to lose him to someone, it wouldn’t be so bad if it were Marinette. At least then, we could all stay friends.” She glanced at Luka and then away. “I don’t have many friends.”
“It’s quality that counts, so you’re on the right track with those two,” Luka smiled at her. “So how did you and Marinette become friends?”
Kagami gave a true smile for perhaps the first time that evening. By the time she finished telling him about friendship day, a story that had him chuckling for the sheer Marinetteness of it all, Adrien and Marinette were back, both all smiles.
“Thanks for waiting, Kagami,” Adrien said, as he returned to her side. Kagami slipped her hand through his arm a little possessively but her smile was honest.
“I was fine. Luka is good company. He’s an interesting person.”
Marinette beamed at him and Luka returned a smile of his own, lifting his arm slightly in invitation. Marinette leaned against him and he put his arm around her shoulders.
“Did you have fun?”
She nodded, cheeks pink. “Will you be okay if I leave you for a little bit longer?”
Luka blinked. “Sure, but where are you going?”
She winked at him with a devilish smile that made him weak. “It’s a surprise.”
“I’ll be here,” he said, a little breathless. Marinette slipped away from him, took Kagami by the arm and whispered in her ear. Kagami looked at her curiously but didn’t object when Marinette pulled her away.
“We’re going to restroom, we’ll be back in a minute!” Marinette said cheerfully.
“That’s interesting,” Luka observed, watching the girls make their slow way out of the ballroom. “What’s she up to now?”
“With Marinette, who knows?” Adrien said fondly. “Maybe we should get some drinks and find a table while we’re waiting.”
“You two do look really great,” Adrien said as they moved off in search of a server. “Marinette’s work is always amazing but she really outdid herself tonight.”
“You should’ve seen me when I picked her up,” Luka told Adrien with a chuckle. “I’m sure it was hilarious given I couldn’t blink for a full minute. I felt like such a cliche.”
“You’re really gone on her, aren’t you?”
“Who wouldn’t be? She’s amazing. You’d have to be an idiot to turn down a girl like that. Honestly I can’t believe she’s still single.”
Adrien chuckled. “She’s had a little bit of bad luck there. The last guy who was crushing on her could barely talk to her and ended up falling for her best friend. And the one before that was akumatized over it and I think after that he was too embarrassed to talk to her.” He snagged two glasses of water from a passing server with practiced ease and handed them to Luka.
Meanwhile the guy she’s in love with is either willfully blind or the nicest idiot I’ve ever met. Poor Marinette.
“Well, she seems like she’s really into you too. I’m glad for you both,” Adrien continued. “Marinette’s a good friend and I’m glad you make her happy.” Adrien patted Luka’s arm.
Luka looked at him incredulously. “We’re not together. I’m not the person she wants to be with.”
Adrien looked back at him, blinking cluelessly. “You don’t think so?”
“I know it’s not so,” Luka said firmly, as Adrien made another grab for water. Triumphant, they moved towards the tables set up around the outside of the ballroom.
“But—didn’t she ask you here? And she made your clothes.”
“That’s just Marinette being Marinette. She’s sweet and thoughtful and—” Luka sighed, placed the glasses on a table, and faced Adrien fully. “Look, I just don’t want Marinette to be hurt because you, or anyone else, got the wrong idea. I like Marinette, but she’s not my girlfriend and I don’t have any claim on her. Nobody who asks her to dance or asks her out is stepping on my toes. As much as I wish it were otherwise, it’s Marinette's decision who she wants to be with and she hasn’t picked me. I want her to be happy and if there’s someone else she’d rather be with, she should be with them.”
“I don’t understand,” Adrien shook his head. “If you love her, shouldn’t you fight for her?” He looked away, setting his own drinks down and reaching for a chair. “The girl I love has been turning me down for months,” he said morosely as he sat down. “She says she’s in love with someone else, but I don’t think I could just accept that and stop pursuing her. I can’t just let her go.”
Luka stared at him for a moment. Oh, shit, Marinette, I’m so sorry. “The words we use for this are so messed up,” he muttered, rubbing his eyes with one hand as he sat down. “Fight for her, pursue her, that’s such an aggressive way to put it.” Luka sighed. “I'm not letting her go, I’m letting her choose. All those grand romantic gestures people get so worked up about, nobody talks about it much but they put a lot of pressure on girls, and that’s just not my style.” He tapped the rhythm of the song playing on the table as he thought through his words. “The thing is, I want Marinette to trust me and to know I’ll be there for her through anything. She’s been going through a really rough time lately, and if I did things your way, I couldn’t have helped her. She never would have let her guard down with me if I was pushing her to be in a relationship all the time.” He gave a one-shouldered shrug and sat back in his chair.
“I’m okay with the way things are,” he said after a moment. “She knows how I feel and I know she’s not ready. Maybe she never will be, maybe she’ll always be in love with someone else, or maybe I’ll meet someone else and move on. Maybe ten years from now she’ll design my fiancée's dress and I’ll play a song I wrote for her wedding. We’re still kids, man, anything could happen. No need to rush.”
“If that’s the way you feel, why did you tell her your feelings at all?” Adrien wanted to know.
Luka shrugged. “Marinette’s an incredible person but she doesn’t realize how amazing she really is. She should know that she’s loved and admired.” He made a face. “And to tell you the truth, I’m terrible at expressing myself without my guitar, and I don’t want any misunderstandings to get between us. I find it’s best if I just say what I mean right out, even if it’s a little uncomfortable.”
“So what are you going to do?” Adrien sighed, clearly only half listening.
“Love her until I stop.” Luka shrugged. “What other choice is there?”
Adrien looked at him, coming back from his dream world. “You think you’ll stop?”
“Someday, when I put some effort into it. Love is like anything else, you have to feed it for it to grow. You can starve it out if you try hard enough. But right now? I’d rather just love her, even if it hurts.” Luka shook his head slightly. “And if you’re really dead set on loving some other girl, you better be careful with Kagami. You’re going to break her heart to bits at the rate you’re going.” If he had to play Kagami’s heart, it would be strong and soft, but thin, lacking harmonies, with notes that flowed ever onward even as they trembled. Forceful, but lonely, brittle, too easily shattered. That would be sad.
Adrien winced. “Yeah,” he muttered.
“Ignoring someone’s feelings and hoping they go away isn’t letting them down easy, Adrien. More like death by a thousand cuts.”
Adrien’s wince became a full-on cringe. “I get it. I’ll think about it, I just…” He sighed. “I don’t even like rejecting fan girls who think they’re in love with a face they’ve only seen in the magazines. It’s worse when it’s someone I actually care about.”
“If you care about her, be honest with her,” Luka urged, a little irritated at Adrien’s misplaced kindness. “It’ll hurt, but not as much as it will if you drag it out and make her figure it out on her own.”
“Yeah,” Adrien muttered, dropping his head into his arms on the table.
Luka clapped a hand on his shoulder. “It’s rough, being rich and good looking and still a decent person. Good luck, Agreste.”
“You too, Couffaine.” Adrien lifted his head and smiled and the two boys bumped fists.
“Oi, Luka!” Jagged was back, pulling Luka up from the table. “‘Scuse us for a second, mate.” He pulled Luka a short distance away and then put his arm around Luka’s shoulders, putting their heads close together.
“Kid, what are you doing?” Jagged hissed. “Why was Marinette dancing with Sir Pasty? And where is she now?”
“He asked her,” Luka shrugged, pulling away slightly. “They’re friends.”
Jagged gave him a look. “Then he must be her only friend, because her room was plastered in pictures of him.”
“What’s your point?” Luka asked, sighing. Think like he’s twelve, he reminded himself.
“My point is a girl like that does not come around very often and you need to lock that shit down,” Jagged told him. “She’d be wasted on someone like him, she’s too rock ‘n roll for that.”
“That’s her choice to make,” Luka replied, sticking his hands in his pockets and trying not to show his growing annoyance. “Why do you care?”
Jagged gave him a look. “Listen, kid—Luka—I don’t know what your ma’s been telling you—I know I made some mistakes back then and I coulda been there for you more but—”
“She didn’t tell me anything and I didn’t ask,” Luka cut him off. “Look, whatever happened between you and my mom back then, that’s between you two. And whatever’s happening between Marinette and me, which, just to be clear, is a whole lot of nothing right now, that’s between me and her.” He paused, surveying the rock star, who was staring right back at him with the same measuring expression. “As for you and me,” Luka said quietly, “I’ve gone most of my life without a father figure and I did fine. I’ve got crazy respect for everything you’ve accomplished but I don’t need you. There’s nothing you can give me that I can’t get on my own with enough work. Take a good look at me, Jagged. I’m not changing who I am for you or anyone else, so think about how you want the next conversation to go. You can just shrug your shoulders and go on with your life, I won’t really care. If that’s not what you want, then fine, we can talk, but not here and not tonight. Don’t think you can barrel into my life and push me around. I don’t care about your money and I don’t want your name, and I damn well won’t be used as leverage on Marinette or my mother. I’m not rearranging my life every time you decide to pop back into town. If you can live with that, then you know where to find me. But tonight I’m not here for you, I’m here for Marinette.” He exhaled just a little shakily, looking his once-idol in the eye.
Jagged shook his head slowly. “You might have my eyes kid, but you’re just like your mother,” Jagged muttered. “So damn stubborn. All right, I get the message. But trust me, Luka, you don’t want to let a girl like Marinette get away.” He patted Luka’s shoulder and moved off.
Luka took a deep breath, let it out slowly, and then went back to the table with Adrien. He just shook his head at Adrien’s questions and drained his glass of water.
“We’re back!”
The boys stood up and turned around and both of them stared. Kagami was wearing Marinette’s dress, while Marinette was wrapped in the folds of Kahami’s kimono. “Tada!” Marientte said cheerfully, spreading her arms. “Now Kagami and Adrien can dance!”
The dress didn’t fit Kagami as perfectly as it did Marinette, but the girls were close enough in size and build that it worked. Marinette was adorable in Kagami’s kimono, but she didn’t carry the garment with Kagami’s ease and elegance. With some amusement Luka noticed Marinette still wore her own shoes. He was a little relieved, he didn’t think Marinette would be able to stay upright on Kagami’s wooden sandals.
Kagami was blushing, fidgeting with Marinette’s shawl where it draped around her shoulders, and couldn’t quite meet anyone’s eye. Adrien stood up. “Wow, Marinette, that’s really cool of you.” He grinned broadly and swept a bow for Kagami. Luka kind of wanted to kick him. “May I have this dance?”
“Thank you,” Kagami whispered to Marinette as she put her hand in Adrien’s and let him lead her away.
“You just made her night,” Luka said admiringly, rising to stand next to Marinette. “You’re really something else, Marinette.”
Marinette smiled, and then frowned, looking down at herself. “I’m sorry, Luka,” she said. “I’m afraid I need to sit things out while I’m in this. There really isn’t a lot of room to move and I’m terrified I’m going to fall and rip something. I’ve never worn a kimono before and Kagami said this is a family heirloom!”
“We could go out on the balcony for a bit,” Luka suggested. He rolled his tense shoulders. “Frankly I could use some air, and there would be fewer people to watch out for.”
“That sounds perfect,” Marinette said fervently. “Only please hold on to me in case I trip.”
Luka took her hand and drew it through his arm. “No problem. I won’t let you fall.”
She squeezed his arm and beamed up at him. “Thanks, Luka. And thanks for being so understanding about this. I’m sorry for taking you away from the party, it’s just, Kagami looked so sad and her mother is so strict, I just wanted her to be able to have fun for a little bit. We’ll switch back after a couple dances and then we can go back to the party. I don’t want to ruin your night.”
“Honestly Marinette, I don’t care if we’re dancing or people-watching or whatever. I just like spending time with you. Nothing could ruin this night. I’m looking sharp in this custom designed suit, and I have a beautiful, generous girl on my arm. Best night ever.” He grinned at her.
She smiled back, but her heart wasn’t in it. “Marinette, what’s wrong?” Luka asked as he opened the door to the balcony for her. It wasn’t as crowded as inside, but there were still a fair number of people milling about. They managed to find a corner partially shielded from the wind and other people thanks to a large planter.
“Nothing, I just...you shouldn’t think so highly of me, Luka. I’m not that great. I was kind of awful to Kagami the first few times we met. She seemed so perfect and so cold and she made me feel so pathetic and immature. I was jealous and I didn’t realize how lonely she was or how badly she just wanted a friend. I feel terrible for the way I treated her.” She leaned against the balcony railing and put her chin in her hand.
“Marinette,” Luka sighed admiringly, shaking his head with a soft smile. He shrugged off his jacket and put it over her shoulders, and leaned his elbows on the railing beside her. “You have no idea how amazing you are.”
She turned to look at him with wide eyes, and blushed when he met her gaze. “You being jealous? That’s natural,” he told her. “Normal, even. Acting badly because of it, well, that’s human. But recognizing that you were wrong and not only deciding to do better, but deciding to be her friend because you could see that she was lonely? That’s what makes you amazing.”
“Isn’t that just...being a decent person?”
“Decent people are rarer than you think, trust me. Even most decent people would just do the bare minimum. Trading outfits and giving her the dress you designed so she can dance with the guy you’re in love with? That’s way more than the minimum.”
Marinette gasped. “How did you know—argh, of course you know, ugh…” She slumped against the balcony rail. “Freaking everybody knew except Adrien,” she muttered.
“You care so much, Marinette. It’s…” He shook his head and sighed. He leaned over and kissed her temple. “It’s one of the things I really love about you.”
Her face erupted in a fierce blush as she gasped and slapped her hands over her face.
Chuckling, Luka looked away to give her time to recover. After a moment he felt her arms circle his and her cheek pressed to his shoulder, and he smiled. They were quiet for a few minutes and suddenly Luka realized Marinette was trembling.
“Are you cold, Marinette?”
“No,” she said quickly, and she took a deep breath. “It’s just that...well...I actually think...I’m not in love with him anymore,” she finished in a rush.
Luka couldn’t have spoken in that moment if his life depended on it. He had just enough sense left to keep his mouth from hanging open, but that was it. Marinette glanced at him, cheeks red, and then away, as she went on. “Something happened a while ago...and...I didn’t exactly tell him my feelings but...I think I still got, I don’t know, closure? He’s in love with someone else. It’s taken me a while to get there, but I’m starting to be okay with that. After all, if there’s someone else he loves, he should be with her, right? I want him to be happy, even if it hurts. That’s...kind of when I started trying to focus back on myself, trying to remember there was more to me than just...him.”
Still speechless, Luka put his arm around her and she leaned into him, cuddling close against his side, gripping his shirt. “We were getting closer, for a while,” she continued quietly. “But then...I don’t know. We just seemed to fall apart. Like we got out of sync somehow. Like two ships passing in the night, except for us it was broad daylight and when we got close enough to shout, I couldn’t say anything and he just yelled ‘You’re such a good friend, Marinette.’” Luka had to laugh at that, but there was a slightly hysterical edge to it and he stifled it quickly. Marinette took a deep breath, and he could feel the tension in her shoulders under his arm. “I feel like...whatever opportunity was there, I missed it. And I—I don’t want to miss another one.” She took another deep breath and let it out shakily. “I don’t want to miss you.”
Luka was no stranger to adrenaline. The rush of performing, the surge that came at the sight of a little black and red box, even the thumping heart and rush of heat the moment before lips touch lips, he knew them all, but he had never felt like this. He felt hot and cold at the same time, his stomach clenching up, and a blind, irrational desire to flee that he only resisted because his entire body felt paralyzed.
His mind treated him to a high speed replay of all those strangely charged moments over the last month that didn’t quite make sense before because she loved Adrien, dissonant notes that suddenly resolved now into a perfect consonant chord because—she didn’t. She didn’t love Adrien anymore. Luka had sensed it, even as his head refused to believe it. But something in him had believed it, he realized, because if he hadn’t he would never have let things go so far. He remembered the time she kissed him on her balcony the day she finished painting his guitar. He had a vivid flashback to the frustration he’d felt the day of the photo shoot when he’d kissed her even though he knew better, when he’d wondered how it could feel so right when he knew she loved somebody else.
Except...she didn’t love someone else.
“Luka?” Marinette looked up at him in alarm. He blinked and wondered how long he’d been standing there silent and rigid.
“I’m okay,” he lied. “I just...I wasn’t expecting that. I don’t—I mean I do—“ He gave up on trying to handle this at all calmly. “Okay I think I need a minute to process this.”
“Sorry,” she giggled nervously, playing with a tendril of her hair like that wasn’t distracting at all. “This really wasn’t in my plan for tonight, but it just...seemed like the best opening I was going to get. I mean...I’ve been trying for weeks to talk to you about all this but I keep second guessing. You’re my friend, more than my friend, and I don’t want to hurt you, Luka. I’m...I’m afraid, that I’m not clear enough in my own head to know what I want, and I’m scared of—of leading you on and then finding out that I can’t—“ she huffed a sigh of frustration. “But that kind of overthinking is what always got me messed up with Adrien and—I can’t say it in music like you can, but you’ve always been so brave about speaking your feelings, and I thought, maybe this is one time I could be that brave too, and then maybe I wouldn’t have to figure it all out on my own…” She bit her lip, looking up at him anxiously.
Part of him knew he should be cautious, whispering words like rebound and second choice and...yeah, the hell with all that.
“You don’t have to have all the answers right away,” he told her, wrapping his hands around her shoulders. “I understand why you’re worried and I’m glad you’re thinking about these things but—“ Luka moved one hand to cradle her face, brushing his thumb along her cheek. “I trust you to stay honest with me, and if it doesn’t work out—well, I can handle pain. Regrets are a lot harder to live with.”
Her lips parted and she took a shaky breath. “I...really like you, Luka. I love the way I feel when I’m with you. Will you...be my boyfriend?”
The grin that spread over his face wasn’t remotely cool or reserved. “Hell yeah.”
Marinette was blushing prettily and couldn’t quite meet his eyes. “Okay. Good. So...What now?”
“Well,” Luka glanced around at the people milling on the balcony. “I don’t think now’s really the time, but you should know I’m planning to kiss the hell out of you in the very near future.”
A satisfying shiver went through her, and his grin widened at the flush that went all the way down her neck. Then she gave him that devastating little smirk of hers and whispered back, “Well, you’d better do a good job.”
Dead. Gone. Here lies Luka Couffaine, absolutely slain by irresistible pink lips, the most creative mind he has ever known, and a pair of gorgeous blue eyes. He died hopelessly in love and fantastically happy.
And he couldn’t touch her because they were surrounded by people and she was wrapped in a borrowed family heirloom kimono. Damn it.
Luka lifted her hand and kissed the inside of her wrist, keeping his eyes on hers. He smiled against her skin at the catch in her breath and the slight widening of her eyes.
“So,” Luka said, slipping his arm around her waist and tugging her back against his side. “I’m kind of useless at all that ballroom stuff, but I’d still like to dance with you later. I don’t know the steps but I have excellent rhythm.”
“As long as you don’t mind my two left feet,” Marinette snuggled close and he thought if he smiled any wider his face might crack in two.
“I love your feet,” he told her. “Almost as much as I love your hands. Which is about half as much as I love your eyes.”
“Stop,” she giggled.
“Never,” he sighed happily. “You’re just going to have to put up with hearing exactly how awesome I think you are.”
“And here I thought I was gonna be dating a cool older man,” Marinette huffed.
“I am cool, and older,” he chuckled, squeezing her lightly. “I also don’t ever want you to be confused for even one second about what I feel for you.” Her face flooded with color, and he could feel her start to fidget. “Listen, I’m not trying to pressure you,” he told her softly. “I promise I heard what you were telling me, that you’re not completely sure about us yet but you want to try. I don’t ever want you to say anything to me that isn’t completely true in your heart. I’m just telling you the things that I know are true in mine. I know you feel insecure sometimes. I know you worry that you’re not good enough. I just don’t ever want you to be worried about that with me, okay?”
Marinette didn’t answer, but he felt her relax into him, and they stood quietly together for a moment. “I love your hands too,” she murmured. “Especially this one.” She picked up his left hand and turned it over, running her fingertips over the roughened pads of his. “I know you make music with both, but…”
“I think I know what you mean,” he said, taking her right hand gently and running his thumb lightly over the callus on the side her middle finger, where her sketching pencil rested. “It’s just a little more real when you can feel it.”
“Luka! Marinette!” They turned to find Kagami and Adrien coming toward them, still arm in arm. “They’re announcing dinner soon,” Adrien explained. “We figured you’d better swap back before then.”
“Oh, she looks so happy,” Marinette whispered, squeezing Luka’s arm, and it was true. Kagami was glowing, practically floating on air as they approached, and Luka couldn’t help smiling at the sight, though at the same time he kind of wanted to smack Adrien. He took his suit coat back from Marinette and let her go to catch hands with Kagami, and the two girls went giggling back towards the restroom as Adrien came to lean on the rail next to Luka, looking content but not nearly as radiantly happy as his date. Luka felt a pang for Kagami’s sake, but he couldn’t think of anything to say to Adrien that he hadn’t already said.
Speaking of which...
“Hey Adrien,” Luka said softly, watching the girls slip through the door back into the ballroom. “You know all that stuff I said earlier about Marinette and me?”
“Yeah?”
Luka grinned broadly, turning back to face the Paris skyline. “I take it all back.”
***
Luka couldn’t have described a single thing they had for dinner that night. He didn’t hear a word of the mayor’s speech. He couldn’t have said when Jagged interrupted it or why Fang was suddenly on stage. He was barely aware when Adrien and Kagami said their goodbyes, having been forbidden to stay for the afterparty. He was so out of it that he was able to keep his cool and speak normally when Jagged kept dragging them over to meet various colleagues, many of whom were almost as famous as Jagged.
It just all felt like a dream until he was on the dance floor with Marinette, until he could feel her hands behind his neck, her soft hair against his cheek, the sway of her hips under his hands as they moved in slow circles. He spared a moment to be thankful that someone with less pretension or a better sense of their audience had gotten hold of the sound system. Marinette lifted her head from his shoulder and there was a devilish tilt to her smile when she reminded him he’d promised to kiss her when they were alone. Which they weren’t, at the moment, surrounded by a fair number of other dancing couples.
He shot her a smirk of his own. “Keep looking at me like that and we might not make it that long.”
“We could leave now.”
“Yeah?”
“I don’t think we want to be here when Jagged turns this into a real party,” Marinette giggled, “And my parents were pretty generous with my curfew tonight but…”
“Right.” He forgot normal parents had things like curfew. “After this dance then?”
“Okay.”
He pulled her closer and she laid her head on back on his shoulder with a sigh. Tomorrow there would be time to think about taking things slow and “are you sure” and all those smart things they both knew they’d have to deal with, but tonight...
Luka kissed her in the elevator the moment the doors closed, catching her face in his hands and pressing his lips to hers harder than he’d meant to at first. He recovered quickly, kissing her softly but fervently, once, twice, and a third time, pulling away only at the chime announcing the doors’ imminent opening.
Marinette kissed him in the car, shyly at first, but he was more than willing to be patient and encouraging, and her confidence grew accordingly. She left him breathless by the time the car pulled up in front of the bakery.
They kissed and kissed and kissed in the hallway outside of her door, until her phone rang and then abruptly cut off, and her mother called through the door for her to wrap it up and come inside, amusement plain in her voice.
He didn’t take his eyes off her as she backed through the door of her home, her hair ruffled and her cheeks pink, flashing him a smile with thoroughly kissed lips and eyes dancing with laughter at his own disheveled state and lovestruck expression.
When she was gone he straightened his jacket, tucked in his shirt, and smoothed his hair but he wore her smeared lipstick home with pride, grinning like an idiot every time he caught his reflection in the car window.

Why, hello love -
For this refreshing season with it’s crisp breeze has me thinking about the holidays and how fast they are approaching! The first day of my cleanse! Yay! I’m feeling good, I haven’t dined out today. Today I went over to a local park for a Vegan Potluck hosted by my dear friend KB, Holistic Vegan Life. We all bought a home cooked dish and had some fun in the sun with good company! Amazing time. My friend and I did take an Uber to the park. However, we did walk back to my house for a glass of wine and a hot toddy.
Oct. 1 Expenses :
Uber (ride + tip) : $13
Drinks at home : $0
Tip #1 : Create your own Girls Night In, skip the club or bar. Put on a heaping dose of trap music and become your own bartender! Your pockets with thank you later x

Today I set-up a hair appointment to have my hair braided.
1. I had the same style for far too long
2. I wanted to deep condition my hair
3. I need to have a more flexible hairstyle for gym
The woman I go to is awesome, my braids always look great and last for about a month with proper care. She is so affordable and professional, I’m always going back!
Oct. 2 Expenses :
Braids : $70
Braiding Hair : $13
Birthday Donuts : $7
Tip #2 : It’s ok to pamper yourself once in a while - get your split ends clipped or change up your hair color. As long as you are doing it in moderation and not over doing it. So, TREAT YO’ SELF but stick your budget! I did!
Total : $90

Back to work today! Yay … hahaa! So, one thing about me is I bring my own coffee, lunch and snacks to work. So, during the week I don’t spend much unless a emergency comes about - which happened today. A family member needed some help with repairing their brakes and being the person I am I couldn’t say no. I would hope someone would lend me a helping hand when I need a little help. “We all need somebody to lean on. .” Come guys join on in, lol!
Oct. 3 Expenses :
Brake Repair: $100
Gas - $24
Tip #3 : Lending a help hand to others is always nice however, never over extend yourself. You want to make sure you are comfortable with your pockets before filling someone else’s. Be honest with yourself and others.
Total : $124
Night, chat with you guys tomorrow!

Oct. 4
Hump day – Yassss! Today was an average work day when it comes to spending – I didn’t spend any money - I bought my own coffee / lunch / snacks. Bringing your own food and drinks to work or when you are out and about, is a smart move. Not only are you saving money – you often will pack a healthier option. You aren’t in rush, picking up sugary coffee drink on your way in or a fast food meal for lunch. When all is said and done your pockets and body will thank you!
Tip #4 : Today I received a text message from my sister about a credit card offer she received. It was a secured credit card offer, meaning she would have to put an initial deposit on the card as collateral. Also, that initial deposit would be your credit limit. Honestly, after doing a bit of research, a secured credit card works in the benefit of the banking institution rather than the customer, to me it appears to be a pre-paid credit card. Isn’t that what a bank account is for? On the other hand unsecured credits cards are the ‘typical’ credit card that most of us have with no initial deposit / collateral which my sister decided to go with. Although, I do understand building your credit with credit, it just didn’t make sense? Give you my money so I can just turn around and use it. . Hmmm – we’ll pass! LOL! My advice regarding credit cards - they are nice to have but, be smart when racking up those charges! Ideally you want to be able to pay off your credit card monthly rather than making the monthly minimum payments and carrying a balance. Although, sometimes smaller than your purchases – those interest fees / annual fees (only applies to certain credit cards) rack up and it takes longer for you to pay off that balance. Also, it shows on your credit report and can affect your credit score when you carry a balance or when you are using a certain percentage of the credit limit. Using over 30% of your credit limits is considered “bad” on your credit report. So, be cautious and careful! Credit Karma, is a great way to monitor your credit and see how your debt is affecting your over score.

With so much work on my desk and deadlines that need to be met - I honestly had not a moment to leave the office. With that said, I spent ZERO dollars! Go me, go me, go me! LOL
Tip #5 : Tomorrow is payday! Yay! Before paying any bills or buying a PSL, I must pay myself. An automatic deduction goes from my paycheck straight to my savings, where is stays and never sees the light of day. Investing in yourself is the smartest investment you’ll ever make and that could be in more ways than one. Love yourself / Pay yourself.
No expenses for Oct. 5
Happy Thursday - almost the weekend, ohh sweet weekend x
-
Oct. 6
1. It’s Friday
2. It’s Payday
3. It’s a LONG weekend
I couldn’t be happier. I love time to myself - to get my creative juices going and reset from the work week. Working on my aura / feeling good / eating for my well-being.
Since today is payday, I started by paying myself and bills. Then, I also put a deposit on the photo booth for our wedding. No unexpected cost - although, my other half was trying to get me to go to the mall to exchange a item and grab din-din. NOPE - dinner at home with wine and Def Comedy Jam. Perfect night with the perfect guy x
Tip #6 : DIY’s can go a long way when it comes to the budget of your wedding. Venue and vendor fees are already so overprices so where you can cut your costs make sure you do. Personally, with my wedding the DIY’s I have put together have saved me a ton. Websites like Pinterest / YouTube / Etsy - sparks so many ideas which lead to beautiful creations!
Oct. 6 Expenses :
Savings: $150
Citi Bank: $400
Wedding Photo Booth: $260
Total : $810
Cheers to the freakin’ weekend!

Saturday, felt so good! Although, I did dip into my wedding fund to purchase so decor for our big day - Yes, I have money set aside for everything. I felt good about the purchase because, we using my BOA debit card I got 5% back on my purchase.
Tip #7 : Coupons, deals or special offers are all your friends! Haha. A tip I got from my dear friend was to always search the web for coupons before you click that buy now button. For example search “ASOS coupon” in google or go on the shop’s direct website, when at Michael’s today I hit the double jackpot. I had a deal on my BOA debit card for cash back and Michael’s website also had a few coupons I was able to pull up on my phone to use in store. Every penny counts especially when you are planning / paying for a wedding!
Oct. 7 Expenses :
Michael’s: $60
Trader Joe’s: $56
Shaw’s: $62
Target: $17
Total : $195
Errands and on the search for a new furnace / doors / tile. Long but great day with my love. Especially, when he treats to lunch and it’s your fave!

Sunday - the lazy / best day of the week. Today was full of laundry, cooking and putting together creative content. All the things that make my Sundays complete! Although, I was home for most of this rainy Sunday, I did head to the store to grab some comfort food for my hunny.
Oct. 8 Expenses :
Shaw’s: $15
(Shaw’s is literally 2 mins away from my house so it shows up my bank statement quite often - LOL)
Amazon Bill: $60
Total : $75
Tip #8 - Be mindful when it comes to spending. Especially when you walk into one of your fave shops. Here are my tips / tricks!
1. Remember what’s in your frig, even if you need to take a snapshot before you head out the door. This helps prevent buying something you may have already. Smart, will be your nickname after you share this tip with your friends.
2. Check for sale prices or any coupons you can find in the shop’s weekly ad. There are usually special discounts or even offers to buy in bulk to save time and money in the future.
3. LIST - oh lists on top of lists. Always, be sure to make a list of the items you need and make sure to stick to those items. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Oct. 9
A nice day off calls for comfort food / cozy clothes / creative vibes. I started today with a stack of homemade pumpkin pancakes and a nice hot mug of almond pumpkin coffee with a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon! Yum. I feel bad - I didn’t leave the house today - at all. With halloween movie marathons and lots of creative thinking going on there was no need to leave, all I need was right here. Well, that was until 1pm when Anthony had to head off to work.
I did not spend a dime today - just the way I like it, hahaa.
Tip #9 - Money saving tip as well as a self care tip - Sending a little ‘me time’ with ones self is never a bad thing. Make yourself some breakfast, lunch and dinner, just like Mama use to. Bring out that book that you’ve been wanting to read or pull out your notepad and write down some goals you have and how you plan to accomplish them. I realized this with one bad experience I had with one of my fave places to eat recently - I was so disappointed because, honestly I could have done a better job. I promised myself I would try and be a bit more practical next time. Something in my gut was saying to pass on it, but I didn’t listen. Lesson learned, hahaa. Listen to your inner most it knows best. Be good to yourself and your pockets!

Oct. 10
Today was a fun filled day of training on a new computer system. Although, long and tedious - I learned a lot and caught up with some good people. Today like most days I bought in my own coffee, lunch and snacks. Then after training - I came home and relaxed. Needless to say - I did not spend any money. I had everything I needed from coffee to leftovers for din-din.
Tip #10 - In the line of work that I’m in, I know the importance of paying your bills on time because there could be life changing consequences. I’m not saying if you don’t pay your phone your bank account will be levied. But, if you don’t pay your phone bill it could result in late fees or even having your phone disconnected. You always want to pay your bills in a timely manner to avoid any of that awful backlash. Also, it matters when it comes to your credit! Creditors report late payments to all three credit bureaus for future creditors to see if you are a reliable payor or not. If not, it can make it harder for you to get more important lines of credit such as a mortgage or cosigning for your children’s student loans. There are so many bill alerting apps, which track your bills’ due date and the amounts that needs to be paid each month. Be smart with your money love, your future self will thank you.

Today has been a pretty cloudy day. Not really feeling my best, so today was a well needed day off. A bit of self-care and love. Lots of tea and shut eye. However, I’m off to a sweet little baby shower this weekend. So, Anthony and I went to Babies R Us in search of a gift. After about an hour of searching for the perfect treat we were ready to check out which leads me to . .
Tip #11
THE PRICE MATCH TOOL! Most retailers will price match items from other online and in-store retailers. Always, make sure to ask sales person if the shop offers this service especially if you know an item is sold in a variety of shops. Take your time - there is no need to rush so you can be sure to find the lowest price. For example - today we saved over $20 bucks by simply taking a few moments to search the web for the best deal. Saving any amount is always better than nada.

My day started bright and early! I have a guest coming over Friday night, so I needed to head to Target for some apps and treats! Oppose to me getting the regular takeout when I have my girl pals over. I’ve been trying my best to be better at cutting back costs by going with either homemade meals or picking up foods I can pop in the oven! Takeout can be so expensive especially with the delivery cost! Also, who can resist going to Target - not this girl that’s for sure! So, I went up and down the isles loading up on my goods with a smile. Finally, I ended up meeting up with my favorite cashier to do some damage. Then suddenly I realized, I needed to check out cartwheel app and to my surprise I found more than half my goods where discounted through this golden app! Score! Double score when I used my Target Red Debit Card, I saved nearly $10 when all was said and done! With a little patience and time I found deals that I would have not gone had I not visited my cartwheel app before checking out. I even came to the conclusion with little bit of change I saved I would buy us a nice bottle of wine!
Tip #12
If you noticed I mentioned I have the Target Red Debit Card. Which means I basically have a debit card for Target. When I first signed up, I was offered the debit card which would be linked directly to my BOA account. Or a Target credit card that would work like any other credit card through a third party bank. I decided a long time ago, if I didn’t have it I didn’t need it! With that said I went with debit card and never looked back since! I don’t have a monthly bill and don’t have to worry about flexible interest fees. It’s my money - my debit card which means I don’t owe anyone. Plus, I save 5% on all my purchases. My fiancé and I recently bought a new television with the Target Red Debit Card we saved over $50. I know I sound like a Target Ad hahaa! That’s why Target should sponsor me! Holla at ya girl! LOL

It just wouldn’t be October without Friday the 13th! I love all things Halloween, from the horror flicks to the sweet treats! The season is upon us with those Jason classics! Today is a beautiful crisp day in Boston. The sun is out and the air is cool. However, the only sun I’ll be able to see is when I take my walks around my workplace building. I work an extremely long day today and although I’d rather be apple picking with friends. I have a lot of work to complete before the weekend. So, its all good! Being at work the entire day also leaves no room for money to be spent. And from my previous post you know that I already have dinner squared away. Which means . .

With today being Friday the 13th and all Hollows Eve approaching, I’m sure many of you are thinking - “What will I be this year?” and “Where should I start looking?” My answer to that question is your closet and craft bucket! DIY Halloween this year, don’t go out and spend a ton of money on costume that’s probably cheaply made but cost $50 and UP! A few of my favorite DIY costumes are - a Cat, Disco Star and Beyoncé (of course)! Check out Pinterest and Instagram for more great ideas!

Lazy Saturdays call for Boston Bagel Company and long drives with my love. I did a little self care and caffeine therapy. However, I did spend a little on Wedding decor. AC Moore was having a great sale on all their items, even sale! I’ve been waiting for this sale for some time now, so I knew I wanted to seize this opportunity to make out some deals. Sooo - $70 later I was wondering what I bought! Hahaha - but it’s all good. I left satisfied with my purchase! Although, I went a little out of the scope of my cleanse - this sale didn’t want to miss out on, especially when I could saving a dollar on items I needed in bulk. Wedding costs can add up so whenever I can catch a sale, I’m all for it!
Tip #14
Even when you stray from your budget / spending plan. It’s ok - as long as you are conscious of what you are buying and where your money is going. If you need to spend due to an emergency or a sale that would save you a ton on an item(s) you need - thats ok. Conscious spending, can save you a lot in the long run because you won’t be spending just because you have it in your account. You’ll be buying with purpose.
Oct. 14 Expenses:
AC Moore: $70
Starbucks: $10 (Reload To App)
Target: $77 (More, Wedding decor LOL)

After a pumpkin pancakes type morning, I was ready for the day which called for a celebration of a little bundle of joy! It was great day filled with laughs and catching up with friends. I didn’t spend any money today with food being served at the baby shower and enjoying the company of those around me. I had no need to spend. It was without a doubt a great day!
Tip #15
One thing that I have not done in a while that I did this weekend was do my own nails. This simple act can save you so much! On average with nails and toes I spend about $50-$60. No act is too small! Save yourself the hassle and pamper yourself at home, like no other!

Monday, I love you too - just in a different way. Hahaa! Today started at Target I needed to pick up some stuff for my mother and fur baby, Willow. I could have done some serious damage but, I was steadfast on this cleanse and I honestly didn’t need anything else for the Wedding from Target at this time and there was no emergency. So, I was in and got right out. I didn’t even stop for Starbucks (Anthony would be proud)!
Tip #16
Cutting back on Starbucks has been a bit hard for me. I love their seasonal drinks but, I’ve learned to make my own Pumpkin Spice Latte / Coffee with the help of YouTube! I estimate that I’ve saved about $25 thus far this month! Honestly, I feel better drinking my homemade Starbucks drinks and they have way more vegan friendly. Making your own faves are so easy to make and save more than you think. Try it - I promise you won’t regret it!

Lonnngg day at work. All that had going on with today was loads of work and the gym. I can’t complain. It was a nice and productive day, I must say. Just the way I like em’. With that said, I send $0 today. No need to buy anything when you have all you need inside you lunch sack and on your phone!
Tip #17 Gym fees can add up and not to mention if you don’t make it to the gym most of the time it can be a waste of money. One alternative to going to the gym is looking up fitness videos on YouTube. My favorite is Fitness Blender’s HIT workout videos. It gets the job and usually under 30 minutes! The only reason I feel the need to have a gym membership is because, I have a Wedding coming up and I’ll be one of the main attractions! I want to look and feel my best so I’m up for the challenge!

Another day in the neighborhood. The weather was beautiful, truly a perfect fall day! Today was another long day at work. With my homemade lunch, coffee and kombucha, I didn’t have to step out of the office. Well, I did when I took my daily walks. Today I didn’t spend any money and staying on track with my cleanse!
Tip #18
I have a couple of friends who are obsessed with their credit scores and constantly asking me “Why is my credit score not going up?” It’s because they are constantly checking Credit Karma striving to reach the 700′s. However, it’s not about being apart of the “800 Club” it’s about the creating better money / spending habits. So, don’t take it so serious, your credit score matters. Saturdays feel so good to me! Especially when you have one that includes Wedding shopping and Halloween parties surrounded by a fire pit with sangria in hand! Amazing company and convos, it couldn’t have been better. Today I sent a bit on Wedding items - table numbers, something blue and a welcome sign. Then later at the Halloween party in support of one my high school friends I bought some of his creative goodness - probably sent way too much! LOL Breaking my cleanse a bit - but, I consider it comes out of my $100 bi-weekly allowance and it helps a creative do what they know what to do - be creative and thrive!

Pretty day - good vibes - self reflection Tuesday. Today was a pretty good day - long but good! I went for my daily walks and caught up with a good friend. I can’t believe I made it this far! I’m less than a week away from completing this financial cleanse. This was just what I needed and helped me be a bit more money smart. Realizing I didn’t always need to spend when I went out and that home cooked meals will always be better than whatever is on the menu for takeout. Today I did have to get my braids done over for upcoming events and the gym had turned my head into a hot sweaty mess. Hahaa. So, I made my way over to my friend’s house to get this hair did. Once done my mother asked if she could have a break from cooking and could we just get some . . . do I dare to say it?! TAKEOUT. Although, this goes against my financial cleanse. I just can’t say no to my mother. I love her too much. So, I did some damage :(

Today instead of traveling to my home office in Taunton, I went to Chelsea to participate in user acceptance training for a new system that my employer will be implementing in early December. I love traveling to this location due to the fact that I can travel via the MBTA, which is my local transit system. I get to enjoy my ride to work with a book or podcast! So, along I went. I did have to pay for the train and bus. I loaded my Charlie Card aka Metro Card. I also treated myself to a cup of Starbucks. Aww - I have made it to the final weekend of my financial cleanse! I can’t believe I’ve made it this far! Like seriously - I’m so impressed with myself and all the progress I’ve made. The cleanse will be done on Tuesday, then I will be sharing all the data I’ve collected and most importantly HOW MUCH I SAVED and HAVE I REACHED MY GOAL? Be sure to be here to check it out.
So, today my love and I had the day off. So, we made our way to the mall because I was in desperate need of a facial cleanser and eye cream. We get to the mall and after picking out what I needed at The Body Shop, I make my way to the checkout… I left my wallet at home! Maybe it was a sign that I should NOT be shopping, LOL! I mean I am on a cleanse! That’s when my superhero stepped and saved the day! Thanks to my love, I have clean skin! We also went to Spooky World with his brother, sister and a friend. Today was a great Fall day - started with a bit of rain and me losing power. However, as the the day went along the sun came out and I received good news that one of my co-workers was moving on to bigger plans. Which makes me so happy that someone is following the path they want to lead! Due to the power going out this morning, I didn’t have my morning coffee brewed at home. So, Starbucks again was calling my name (FYI : I will have my PSL hack up on my Instagram tomorrow) so I was excited for my AM treat. Yes! Final day of my cleanse! I can’t believe I made it! Most of all I can’t believe I’m done with my first month long blog! It wasn’t easy but all worth it. I’ve learned that you have to make your money work for you, not against you. You decide where your money goes. Good money habits, create opportunity for you do things that are value. Not the next Gucci bag or a BMW. Rather create memories with loved ones with travel and exploring new cultures by trying new foods or traditions through art exhibits.
I’m happy to say I saved just under $1,100! My goal was $700 that means I’m in the surplus of $400! What a achievement, I couldn’t be more happy and proud. Today I intentionally did not spend any money. Just in the effort to end my cleanse with a bang. So, for the last day of my cleanse . .

Summer Days pt.6
Characters: Levy McGarden x Lisanna Strauss (Levanna)- Characters from Fairy Tail by Hiro Mashima
Rating: General? Teen? I don’t know, where do you stand on fluff?
Summary: Modern AU vignettes where Lisanna and Levy spend a summer together for @filiadcorblog
on AO3
*Down on the Boardwalk- Being “tourists” for the day
Levy checked Lisanna’s handiwork. “I think the baseball cap would be better than the fedora.”
“Well okay, but the fedora really screams ‘tourist’ to me,” Lisanna said as she switched the hats.
“How do I look?” Levy asked before turning to check herself in the mirror.
“You look like the perfect example of every stereotype of a seaside tourist I’ve ever seen,” Lisanna assured her.
They were dressed in tank tops with Hawaiian print shirts over top, khaki Bermuda shorts, white ankle socks, and sandals. They topped off their look with silvered sunglasses and hats. Their visit to the Blue Pegasus Thrift Shop had yielded most of their outfits, the challenge had been to spend less than five dollars and Lisanna had enough change left over to buy the hideous orange handbag that now hung across her body.
“Let me grab my camera and then we can go,” Levy said as Lisanna continued to fidget with the purse strap.
They arrived early at the boardwalk taking ridiculous amounts of pictures as if they had never heard of the ocean or, presumably, seen storefronts before in their entire existence. Levy had reserved wristbands that allowed them unlimited access to the all the rides along the boardwalk, so they made sure to grab them right away.
They were first in line for the rollercoaster which Lisanna had begged to ride, and since she enjoyed it so much they rode it three more times. Levy insisted that Lisanna try the twirling dragon ride claiming that was infamous as the ride that will make you vomit. They took a moment to enjoy the ferris wheel and let their stomachs settle, while getting a magnificent view of the ocean. They decided to try their luck on a few of the carnival games in the arcade. Lisanna won the steeplechase game while Levy won skeeball. They racked up what seemed to be quite a few tickets, but when they turned them in found that they could get a couple of yo-yos or a tiny, stuffed cat on a keychain. They chose the blue cat. Levy told Lisanna that she should keep it as a memento of their trip to the beach. They took one last turn on the roller coaster before taking a ride on the swirling chain swings. Lisanna declared that she needed to stop turning in circles and get some lunch.
They shared an order of fish and chips with a side of fried calamari at the Mermaid Heel, a restaurant that gave women in difficult circumstances marketable skills and protection until they were able to make it on their own. Lisanna had wanted to get cookies at Makarov’s Marvelous Macaroon, but Levy begged off saying she really didn’t want to go in on her one day off this week. She promised her a better place for a sweet treat further along the promenade.
“Time for some shopping!” Levy declared when lunch was over.
She lead Lisanna into a nearby antique store and they window shopped the beautiful objects it contained, making guesses on the age of certain pieces, and questioning if something was original, restored, or faked. Lisanna insisted on having her picture taken with the dancing mascot for the Red Lizard that was out on the sidewalk to drum up attention for his store. Levy made sure to dive into the Orochi’s Fin, a surf gear shop, to check out several pieces of equipment. She asked Lisanna to model a couple of different windbreakers and some quick drying tops while she took photos. Lisanna demanded that Levy model a wetsuit next to a longboard in front of the window for her to take a picture muttering words like ‘juxtaposition of objects’ and ‘mimetic images’ as she framed the scene. A couple of doors down was the Dwarf Gear Shop and both women cooed over the tiny wetsuits and surfboards made for children. Then they had a competition to come up with the cutest beach outfit for a toddler from the items in the store. Lisanna loved the outfit that Levy put together and bought it for her niece declaring, “Evergreen will be the best dressed kid at the pool.”
“I’m craving something sweet,” Lisanna said as they walked the uneven boards. “I think I’m going to need some sugar soon,” she said not too subtly.
“Can you wait a few more minutes?” Levy asked. “We’re nearly there.”
“Where?”
“Lamia Scale Sweets,” Levy replied. “It has the best chocolate and peanut butter fudge on the boardwalk.”
“Do they have saltwater taffy?” Lisanna said as she recalled something. “I always get Elfman taffy when we go to the beach, and I’ve been missing him a little.”
“Oh they have tons of taffy flavors, many that can’t be found anywhere else,” Levy assured her. “They also have specialty candies from around the world as well as retro candies from back in the day.” She began to chuckle darkly. “They even have a corner with what they label revenge sweets. Atomic level cinnamon bears, lollipops with scorpions inside, chocolate covered ants, and truffles covered in roasted grasshoppers.”
“Oooh, sounds perfect,” Lisanna said, a mischievous smile on her face. “That will teach him to be a responsible adult and stay home to ‘work’ instead of coming to play with me.”
“Well if you need help with that, today’s your lucky day,” Levy said. “My little sister works there and there’s no one better at looking entirely sweet and innocent while internally being full of guile and deceit.”
“There’s a story behind that last statement,” Lisanna said, looking at Levy questioningly.
“I’m still not over it,” Levy said with a huff, “Let’s just say that Wendy has been the family’s reigning April Fool’s prankster for the last four years and it doesn’t look like she’s losing her crown anytime soon.”
Lisanna laughed. “I think she and Mira would get along like a house on fire,” she thought for a moment then said, “but the house would not survive.”
Levy began to snicker. “I can see the headline now ‘Fiore in Flames Thanks to Dastardly Duo’ as the world smolders around them.”
Both women were still giggling together when they walked into the candy shop.
“Levy!” the cry came clearly across the store.
Levy waved at the teenager behind the counter. She was dressed in the uniform of the store: A white shirt with frills down the front, large red bow at the neck, a black skirt that was just at knee length, and the no-skid black shoes that seemed to be standard issue in any food service establishment.
“How’s your day been going?” Levy asked.
The girl shrugged then said, “It was busy earlier, but it’s kind of slacked off now.”
“Does that mean you’d be able to help us out with choosing some particular goodies for Lisanna to send home?”
“Yeah, sure,” she said as she brightened up and came out from behind the counter. “Did you grab a basket at the front?”
“No, we didn’t,” Lisanna replied, “I’ll go get one.” She hurried to the stack of baskets.
“So?” Wendy asked. “How’s your date going?”
“It’s not a date Wendy,” Levy said quickly, “It’s just two people hanging out at the boardwalk.”
“Who paid for the ride bracelets?” Wendy demanded.
“I did.”
“And the arcade games?”
“I guess that was mostly me,” Levy admitted.
“Uh-huh,” she said with a leer. “Who paid for lunch?”
“We split the check,” Levy replied reluctantly, “but only because we shared the food.”
They watched as Lisanna stopped at a display of rainbow lollipops. Trying to decide between the various sizes available before choosing several of each.
“And just how often did you accidentally reach for the same french fry?” There was a wolfish grin on her face.
Levy blushed. “Maybe more than could be considered statistically probable,” she admitted.
“Ha!” Wendy crowed triumphantly as Lisanna rejoined them. “So, what kind of sweets are you in the market for?”
“Well I always get my brother taffy when we come to the beach, but he had to stay home and work, so I want a present that says something like ‘Thinking of you, you big lovable jar head, but don’t think I’ve forgiven you just yet for your betrayal.’ Do you have anything like that?”
Wendy chortled, “Oh I’ve got you covered. Just follow me.”
She lead them over to a corner to a barrel filled with taffy, the sign above it asked, “Do You DARE?”
Wendy began, “You are no doubt familiar with a certain book about a young man who is dramatically told that he’s a wizard.” She looked at Lisanna, “His name rhymes with Larry Gott-Her.” Wendy easily slipped into the oft repeated spiel. “There is a certain confection in the books that has an unknown taste until eaten.”
“You mean Bert-” Lisanna began, but Wendy held up a hand to stop her.
“We do NOT say that name in this shop as we are not affiliated with the author, nor the confectioners that have been licenced to sell the less magical version to the common consumer, thank you.” She gestured to the candy behind her. “This barrel contains a mix of look alike taffies, but I assure you they do not taste alike. So now, intrepid explorer, a challenge lies before you. Glory and cavities await, but...DO YOU DARE?” She stopped her presentation with a flourish in the barrel’s direction while Levy and Lisanna gave polite golf claps.
Lisanna looked at the candies, “Is there any way to know what's what?”
“Not really,” Wendy answered. “We can give you a list of the flavors we use, but that's about the best we can do. There's new batches made every hour and the flavors and colors are randomly selected so the reds you get today that turns out to be grape or lime flavor, are not going to match the reds tomorrow that might be grass or chili pepper.“
“That sounds ingeniously devious,” Lisanna said.
Wendy smiled, “Thank you. I got a big bonus for coming up with the idea.”
“I told you she's not to be trusted where pranking is involved,” Levy said.
“On the contrary, she's just the woman for the job,” Lisanna argued. “I told her the situation and she had the exact solution I needed. How much do you think I should get?“
“Probably two or three of each color, they try to make sure there's two different flavors per color, if not more,” Wendy informed her.
Levy helped her sift through the candy while Lisanna recounted their day. “Oooh, show her the pictures while I look around at what else they have here,” she said as she eyed the consumer warning on the Habanero Hot Cinnamon Bears.
Wendy waved them out of the store twenty minutes later grumbling under her breath, “Not a date? Whatever.”
They made it to the far end of the boardwalk just as the sun reached the horizon and decided to head back to the car. Levy suggested that the sky ride would get them back quicker and let them sit for a bit. Lisanna looked through her bag from Lamia Scale for something unique for them both to try. Levy had sampled most of the candies, sometimes unwittingly, but finally Lisanna found one.
“It’s a new candy meant to seem retro,” Lisanna said as she opened the package.
“What’s it called?”
Lisanna blushed before saying, “Love Potion No.9.”
“Oh?” Levy laughed. “I’ve never tried that one before.”
“Well here’s your chance,” Lisanna said holding the box toward her. “But,” she waggled her eyebrows, “Do you dare?”

How to Make the Most of Your Time Off
I’m only three weeks into the new semester, and I already need a break. College is a lot like the Cobra Kai gang: no mercy.
I had the absolute pleasure to have about three solid weeks off between end of fall semester and the beginning of winter semester, and it seems like it flew by. I had all these grand plans of deep-cleaning the condo, reading the stack of books collecting dust on my shelf, workint out, and taking Scarlett for walks every day (if you haven’t met Scarlett yet, she’s my birthday-and-Christmas-combined surprise from Stephen: a fluffy, adorable, snuggly mini Australian Shepherd with blue eyes and a heart of gold. Seriously, go look at my Instagram. She’s amazing).
You know what I’m talking about. The best of intentions can turn into the longest Netflix binges, and before you know it, your house is a mess, break is over, and you’ve gotten nothing done. Alright, I admit, this is exactly how my break went for the first half or so, until I finally woke up and got my crap together. Now that we’re in a new semester, I have two days off per week (and thus zero excuses), so I’ll be able to power my way through task after task. Don’t be like me. Start out strong, keep on, and finish strong. How? Well, I’m so glad you asked.
How to make the most of time off:
1. Know what you want to do
Way, wayyyyy ahead of time, start putting together a list of all the things that need to get done on your time off. I like to use OneNote to keep a running list on my phone of anything that comes to mind, since I more than likely won’t be able to remember it later. Keep track of what chores need to be completed, what projects you want to get done, any movies you want to watch in your spare time … anything.
2. Go in with a solid plan
Once you have an idea of what your day(s) is/are going to look like when you’re off, put together a schedule for getting things done. I’m currently obsessed with Plan, an app that lets you create to-do lists and actually schedule them so you get reminders of when to start tasks and when they end. It’s amazing.
Schedule out each of your to-do items for the day ahead of time. This can either be all at once before your time off starts or each day as it goes. I personally prefer sitting down in the evening, looking at my remaining to-dos, and scheduling the next day so I better have a grasp on what’s going on, how much time I have, and what I’m realistically likely to get done.
3. Leave time for breaks
Breaks are incredibly important when used properly. Some people find working for an hour or so then taking a short break works for them, while others (like me) find they do their best when they crank out a few hours then take a longer break. Whatever your style, make sure to leave room for one or two hours of down time per day. Use that time to catch up on the latest Blindspot episode (our current obsession), knit a few rows, or do any other relaxing activity that helps you recharge.
That being said, don’t overdo it with the breaks. Please. This completely defeats the purpose of breaks. They’re supposed to give you a quick reprieve in order to regroup and attack.
4. Figure out how you work best
A few months ago, I was given a suggestion that completely changed my life (and no, I’m not even exaggerating): listen to audiobooks while you get work done.
I know what you’re thinking. Wait, what? Why would that do anything? I was skeptical at first, too, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. I could clean for hours and hours without it even bothering me. Try it. Trust me.
But hey, maybe you work best with some serious metal blasting in the background. Maybe you need to go run and work off a bunch of energy before settling down to get stuff done. Or chewing bubble gum helps you focus. Whatever your deal is, find it and use it.
5. Stay on track
This is the tough part, especially when you’re in “I have time off and can do whatever I want” mode. You can make up the prettiest, most detailed plan but end up getting next to nothing done. If you mess up and totally play hooky on the last half of your to do list one day, don’t freak out and take the rest of the week off. Get back on the horse and keep charging forward! The same goes for those of us who only have a day or two off. If you miss getting your next task started, just plow on ahead! Give yourself permission to move things around, be flexible, and roll with the punches, just don’t give up!
6. Treat yo self
If you’re anything like me, staying focused and actually accomplishing things for an extended period of time is no easy task. Celebrate when you’ve gotten everything done! Whether that comes in the form of watching an extra episode of New Girl after a particularly successful day or splurging for the tattoo you’ve been coveting after completing a major home project, celebrate! Rewarding yourself makes getting things done more fun. You have something to look forward to!
What’s your best success tip for getting the most out of your time off? Let me know in the comments below!
